I recognized Mädchen the moment she enters the room, beautiful long longs walking towards me at the Chateau Marmont. Shelly Johnson: Twin Peaks, Aunt Wendy: The Witches of The East End its her, and she’s sitting with me, I cant believe it! Her physique is flawless, wearing a long lace dress with a slit on the side, braided sandals, honey bronze skin, shining green eyes with a bohemian touch. Mädchen, welcome! Let’s get started with, I have always been curious.....what does your name mean? (smiling) you’re right, it’s curious, it comes from my german origins and it means“cute little girl” a sort of old fashion name… Can you tell me about you and where you are from? Im from Reno, Nevada, I’m american, coming from second generation of canadian’s and I have beautiful memories of my childhood: both my parents were working in the casinos, my father was a musician, my mother a dancer, they were both really handsome, I grew up in an artistic environment. I was often traveling with my dad on his tours around the US, it was a great chance for me to see the world… from there, the desire of leaving my everyday life and escaping from my country life grewstronger and stronger; it was nice, my life was safe but I wanted more.

What kind of girl were you? A dreamer? Yeah, sort of‌ I like company but also staying by myself. My friends were usually adults, not people of my age, like the friends of my mother. I had a lot in common with them. I knew I didn’t want to stay in Reno for all my life. My dream was to become a ballerina in NYC, I started my journey in the local theaters: the first play I was in was with my friends, it was about some kids in a reformatory, pretty sad but intense.


What’s happen then? My parents gave me permission to move to LA when I was 16, and that is when I started my career in fashion with Elite Models, and I was only 5’6. I have always been professional and eager to work! I have really done everything: from dancing in music videos, extra work, to modeling for commercials… LA was really cool, it had a very strong community of artists, everyone made you feel at home. What about the meeting with David Lynch (who changed your life)? That was a really intense period of my life: during that time I was recording two pilots of other shows that became really popular: the pilot for Baywatch with David Hasselhoff and Star Trek… I was called for a role on Twin Peaks the same time. Did you already know the director? Yes,I saw his movie “Dune”, its visual aesthetic caught my eye, it was a bizarre and experimental movie. The meeting with him and Johanna (Ray, casting director) was really pleasant, they were so nice and down to earth. I guess I impressed him, the role of Shelly Johnson was written right after he saw my audition. Let’s talk about her Shelly’s character was for me sort of a reconnection with my old life in Reno and I was totally taken by the mastery of the story, the whole cast was amazing. I became really close with Dana (Ashbrook), Lara (Flynn Boyle) and Eric (Da Re), while Peggy Lipton and Piper Laurie were the veteran, they were always ready to give advice or help… And after that, the big boom came and we were suddenly famous! We went all over the world to promote the show, were we doing interviews, magazine covers and even a spread in Vogue and Rolling Stones… it was fun but I’ ll admit this was the least interesting part of my job, acting is definitely the first, I’m proud to call myself a working actress. We are all a bit sad of the sudden cancelation of the show “The Witches Of The East End”, but we’re super excited for the coming back of “Twin Peaks” (that will be shot in april) and we look forward to seeing Shelly, Dale and all the cast 25 years after, like the “prophecy” of Laura in the Black Lodge… The fans are waiting, and a big movement has crossed from Europe to the US, protesting “The Witches Of The East End” to come back. Goth, Witchcraft and Mystery are inspirations for our upcoming photo shoot at The Voila Gallery here in Hollywood… Any future projects? My first occupation has always been being a mom, for a long time now. I have two kids in their twenties now… when they were born, me and my husband traveled to several different places (Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Massachusetts), to avoid the environment of the show business in LA, but now I’m back! I have many ideas; I wrote a movie with also some autobiographical note (a mother and a daughter) and I know I would be a great producer!

Most of us won’t probably recognize his face… he isn’t an actor, a personality of the small screen, but looking at his visual work, everyone will surely be familiar with it. The picture of David Lynch holding Isabella gently, a touch in black and white, shot by Helmut Newton, is in the history of the noirish photography, and he “created it”. Gary Berkowitz has been one of the most famous american make up artists from the golden age of fashion of the 80’s and the 90’s, with tons of covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and countless Hollywood moviestars. Today Gary is an handsome distinguished guy, with a nice little dog, living in a grand spanish building in West Hollywood.

I met him in his apartment, outside a marble fountain with a cherub between palms and yacarandas, inside a nice collection of paintings and sketches from the 1920 – 1930, dark wooden forniture and interesting piece of antiques here and there. Tell me a little about “Gary” I grew up in Detroit I went to University Of Michigan, where I studied environmental design then realized I wasn’t a school person. I wanted to be at the Discos and partying with my friends. I loved the glamour and lights. After leaving UOM I went to Woodberry University to study Fashion Design. Well that didn’t work out either clearly. Why Makeup, at what age did you find yourself becoming interested? Growing up I would read all of my moms Vogues, I was fascinated by them. I eventually started to do makeup on my girlfriends, then later on is when I decided to go to cosmetology school. I was selling clothes at that time and a dear friend of mine, photography student, was calling me to help him managing the shootings for the school. There I noticed make up and the idea came in my mind. At the time I didn’t even know you could have a career as a professional Makeup artist. I soon started testing with students at the Art center to build my book. What was your inspiration? I loved Diana Ross and the Supreme’s… these great black beauties were shining in their showgirls makeup and I was constantly dreaming about it listening to their music


Where did you go from there? I went to Milan to build a book in Europe. I knew Italians would give me a chance, Paris, no way, they were like a closed book. I met Beatrice, owner of Beatrice International Models and she became my agent; it was a really nice time even if the money was not too much: I was running around Milan, always under grey skies, but I had fun in the studios all over the city! Manuela Pavesi, at that time the editor of Italian vogue, hired me for my first important job. I built a strong book over there and came back to America and started shooting non stop. Matthew Rolston, an old friend become a really successful photographer in Hollywood, reconnected with me, and we have worked together for years. Harper’s Bazaar was shooting celebrities and upcoming Hollywood stars, I went through all of them: Demi Moore, Susan Sarandon, Andie McDowell, Kim Novak, Faye Dunaway, Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman… so many stories to tell… But I truly loved working with Diana Ross, Madonna, and Isabella Rossellini. Can we talk about this famous picture of her with David Lynch? Helmut Newton called me to shoot this portrait in their house on the hills; when I arrived the house was totally empty except for a big blue couch (it was the same of “Blue Velvet”) and I started putting all my make up stuff here and there on the ground. When Helmut arrived he got mad at this but the picture was great… a dark lipstick made the job! David Lynch instead really loved me cause he remembered me and he called me again for a private photoshoot he organized; it was great, even without a real knowledge about fashion, he shot beautiful portrait of a girl, he is truly an artist.

How did it feel to have Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss ask for you personally when they came to LA? Rewarding! Kate is a doll, Naomi was always amazing and she always supported me also in the difficult times of my career. What are you working on now? I was getting a little bored after so much time and I developed more interests… I have always been fond of art, especially from the first half of 1900, so I started to buy, sell and trade pieces of painters of that period. I also studied interior design after a while and I had great fun decorating and designing places of friends who were needing my service. And I’m still doing both! And lastly I am getting into voice over acting… still behind the camera, in a sort of different way, but who knows, maybe I’ll step in front one time! Thank you so much for taking your time to talk to me Gary. You are truly an amazing and inspirational person. You were able to work during a time all of us younger generation wish we could have worked in.

The gala was the official launch of Startuch.com; a global internet platform where celebrities as well as other known public figures, can auction their vast resources of pre-owed items to raise money for any charity of their choice. The event took place at Riviera 31 located at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills, where celebrities and VIP guests enjoyed a night of drinks and appetizers, sponsored by Dos Lunas tequila. Evgenia Lorcy, co-founder of Startuch along with celebrity co host SARGE, a comedian and motivational speaker, created an elegant event. The Startuch gala included celebrity guests such as former NFL star Terrell Owens, actress Vivica A Fox, Socialite Lady Victoria Hervey and actor Neil Napier. The beautifully decorated Riviera 31 catered to celebrities and VIP guests. The event featured an auction of celebrity clothing, donated by Vivica A Fox and many others. These items were showcased at the event for guests to see. Startuch.com mission is to raise funds for charity organizations chosen and supported by individual celebrities, 24/7 and add value to their pre-owened items as a means of raising as much money as possible for the given charity. Celebrities donate everything from clothing to art.

A RURAL GOTHIC Andrea Kowch interview by Jacopo Manfren

The first time I saw Andrea Kowch paintings I was immediately impressed by the power of her style and concepts: a mix of tales from the Wizard of Oz to Alfred Hitchcock, to a rural gothic in a photographic realism that really make you dream away. We meet on Skype: myself in West Hollywood, California, Andrea in the country outside of Detroit, Michigan, where she lives in her house / atelier. She looks really beautiful and reminding me of Neve Campbell in her famous role of young witch in “The Craft”… ice blue eyes and smokey make up, dark hair parted in the middle. We start chatting and she tells me she has been fond of art since she was a kid. It’s true, I was trying the Masters of Painting at the young age of 12. I was fascinated by their use of the luminosity, colors and shapes. I now have a Degree in Art. We can find in your paintings a lot of inspirations, let’s talk about that. I grew up in a rural and totally feminine environment, I have aunts and grannies I spent a lot of my childhood. These two elements are the strongest influences in my art. I have always loved a rural atmosphere for the sense of mystery hidden under the surface. The Masters of the past, especially Flemish and from Renaissance, are a basic element for me, from the use of colors, the technique and the ability of telling visual tale. On the other side there is the all americana style of Edward Hopper and Grant Wood. How would you define your style? I could say I belong to the “Magic / narrative realism”… I don’t look for the hyperrealism, even if my education gave a lot of space to do so. Also learning illustration during my college years created a big part of my style, especially the ability of telling stories.

Speaking of technique, what kind of relationships do you try to create with your models during these sessions? They look like the same girls in every painting. Yes, true, my models are a group of close friends, I have developed a strong mental connection with them over time. Their personalities (so different from girl to girl) are starting to come out in the paintings… it’s so interesting to see how they contribute to the success of the paintings. Do you shoot pictures, then you illustrate from the photo after? Exactly, I wish models have the time to pose for that length of time but it’s impossible, I also like to create the settings and the elements of the session. The purpose of my work is to catch the moment and at the same time to blend the past, present and future in a timeless stillness.

What about the landscape? Here is when the memories of my childhood and my idealization of Nature comes in to play. How would you explain the strong use of Nature, the landscapes, the objects and also the animals? Through all these elements I want to try to describe human emotions; animals themselves could be the humans: if men hide their emotions, animals totally let them free. But it’s not a rule: I love the observer to create his personal fantasy in my work. Future projects? I’m really busy in an upcoming solo exhibition, a great opportunity. Talking about a farther future, what can I say, maybe just being able to go on painting like I am now. What would you suggest to a young artist? The classic way! Studying a lot and be being productive, learn from your mistakes and never give up!!

THE COMPANY OF THE WOLVES Neil Jordan - 1980 A fable, starting in the most classic of styles: a big house on the moores, a little girl is dreaming; dozens of dolls surround her, examining her heavily made up face like one of them… pink on her cheeks, red on her lips, blue on her eyes. But the story fades to black, red: a woman is running into the woods, chased by a coven of wolves… And thus begins Neil Jordan’s “The Company Of The Wolves”. Faithful to his style, the movie is a mixture of visions, dreams and tales: about a red-riding-hood kid, a witch uninvited to the banquet, a fast moving beautiful hunter, a lonely widower and many many others… but it’s so easy losing the string in this maze, and we’ll soon find ourselves looking at the thousand pieces of a broken glass. And at the end we’ll only want to hear another tale.

HOTEL FEAR Francesco Barilli - 1977 Italy, Roman countryside, Second World War. Young and beautiful Rose lives with her mother running a hotel on the side of a lake; times are difficult, money and food are scarse and the clients are a deadbeat motley group from different social classes. The tragedy occurs during a stormy night: her mother falls down the stairs, leaving Rose alone against everyone. Only her missing father, a soldier lost in the war, can save her from the impending danger‌ will he arrive in time? In a merry-go-round of the 40’s, with whimsical mermaids painted on the walls, blind men walking in the dark, hidden passages, boobies and some bad acting, the virginal Rose shines over all in this movie that assembles thriller, noir, soft core and surrealism. And the hand of this director (also an acclaimed painter, as we can see from his visual aesthetic) creates beautiful tableux vivants, colored and blurry, without ever loosing the tension that will explode in an apocalyptic ending.
