This month, I very proudly present a cover page featuring a local celebrity. This time we have an acclaimed classical singer, a Vizagite to the core, Dr. Pantula Rama gracing our front cover page. The values and ideals of Dr Rama actually go pretty much in sync with our March issue; she represents the dynamic yet traditional aspect of Vizag. She is very eco conscious and committed to saving the environment; an agenda that Yo Vizag has brought up again and again. This time too we dwell on the crisis on hand, urging one and all to unite and save power. ‘Switch it off ’ is all we ask for. This time, let Vizag too be counted among the many more cities that promote a total blackout (except essential devices like the street traffic signals) and emergency services. When it comes to protecting our traditions from dying out and going extinct, no one does it better than the tribal’s. Their use of science in so many daily tasks was brilliantly showcased at a recent exhibition, the Tribal Science Congress. While we revere traditional practices and sciences; this month Vizagites will also get a taste of the latest technology in entertainment with the opening of Varun Beach Inox, a state-of-the-art theatre housing six big screens and plush seats. With promises of online bookings, telephonic bookings, door delivery of tickets, and a string of latest blockbusters and old favourites lined up, the movie buffs of Vizag and connoisseurs of good movies are in for a treat. This month we also have the IPL excitement on.Here is to hoping the Deccan Chargers repeat the magic of last year and also wishing all the readers Happy Ugadi - a successful and prosperous year ahead...

ìThe message in my favourite star Chiranjeevi’s film ‘Stalin’ can be used for ‘Earth Hour’. Everyone just explain the importance of this ‘Earth Hour’ to two members and ask them to do the sameî. That’s Abhishek Bachchan tweeting on Twitter, as he lends his voice and support as the Indian brand ambassador for Earth Hour 2010.

Uma -

Last year, it was Aamir Khan, this year it is the younger Bachchan, the message is the same, a call asking people to switch off lights for an hour to conserve energy, to save earth. “As responsible citizens of this planet, it is extremely crucial for us to address the colossal problem of climate change by ensuring responsible action and adopting a sustainable way of life... It is time that we take a collective pledge to ‘switch on’ our minds and take one simple step to switch off the lights March 27 from 8.30 to 9:30 p.m.,” Bachchan told reporters. WWF India’s chief executive officer Ravi Singh added that Earth Hour 2009 was “the largest climate action in history” and this year the campaign will be joined by 92 countries and 878 cities. But what is climate change? Climate Change is a phenomenon which takes place when green house gases (the most common amongst which is CO2) that are released into the atmosphere, form a layer preventing the heat from the earth’s surface to be reflected back to the space. This phenomenon popularly known as the ‘greenhouse effect’ causes the earth’s What began as a campaign in Sydney, Australia in 2007 has grown to become one of the world’s biggest climate change initiatives. Earth Hour is now a global enterprise, supported and broadcast by WWF (World Wide Fund). In Sydney, in 2007, 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. Last year, the national capital, New Delhi too joined other leading cities across the world like Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore in switching off the lights for an hour to mark the Earth

temperature to rise, giving way to many potentially catastrophic changes in weather patterns, oceanic currents, rainfall patterns etc. And the main culprits that release these greenhouse gases are the power sector, industrial sector, transport sector and household sector; with almost 50% greenhouse gas contribution coming from the power sector alone.

Hour. Lights were also switched off in the premises of historical monuments including Humayun's tomb, Qutub Minar, Purana Qilla, Lal Quilla. Giants like Air India and RBI in Mumbai shut down lights for an hour. IIT Delhi, Mumbai, Roorkee and IIM - Ahmadabad participated too. 100 top public and private sector organisations spread across India participated. Reserve Bank of India, Infosys, Wipro, ICICI, Google, Indian Hotels, HSBC, Standard Chartered India, HP, ITC Welcomgroup, HUDCO, TAJ group of hotels and PVR, to name a few.

But the Sydney initiative in 2007 was not unique; it was based on an idea successfully adopted in Thailand in 2005. Even San Francisco had its own version of an Earth Hour, the ‘Lights Out’ program, usually held in October, before the Sydney enterprise in 2007. But the scale, at which the event was promoted and endorsed in Sydney, mainly by the WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald, brought worldwide attention. Since the aims were the same and the idea similar, rather than compete, in 2008 San Francisco too joined the other participating cities in March, bringing up the total to 35 cities. In 2008, we at Yo! Vizag inspired by the determination of young Neeti Rathi, only 11 back then, geared up to promote the cause. The Yo Vizag team in association with Kenexa, Big FM and the students of Ashwini School conducted a rally on the beach front to popularise the

Yo vizag! March 2010

event. The response and interest generated was inspiring. The following year too, in 2009, a similar rally was held. This year, the plans are bigger, WWF and LUGT (Lets Unite for a Greener Tomorrow, a green initiative started by a group of enthusiastic engineers)in association with CII ,Yi, Big FM & Yovizag have joined hands to spread further awareness on this all important issue. Tree planting sprees, rallies and most importantly, LIGHTS OUT from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Scheduled for the last Saturday of March, this year Earth Hour falls on March 27. Plan to make it big, convince all around to join in. Invite all for a candlelit dinner or party in the light of ethnic lanterns. Forgo the weekly serial on the soap box and get the neighbourhood to have a big antakshari contest instead! Think of fun activities in the dark or by candlelight and make this one hour memorable.

11

Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. It is the hour in which the world unites in a stand against global warming. This event is for everyone who is willing to make a small contribution for the planet we live on. Everyone can make a difference. This event is to highlight the incessant dependence on power, and remind all to switch off all unnecessary appliances. Conserve power to conserve planet earth. Become more efficient in your use of energy: That is, to use less energy to provide the same level of energy services, for example, by using energy efficient appliances. Adopt an energy saving attitude. The idea behind Earth Hour is to instil behavioural change in the energy consuming attitude of people by asking them to use their power efficiently and switch off the non essential lights and other energy consuming devices when not in use. The 2010 Earth Hour has been scheduled for Mar 27 between 8:30pm and 9:30 pm. Act now. It’s just a flick of the switch! She can mesmerise any august gathering with her melodious bhava-laden voice as she deftly handles complex swaras and ragas with ease. And surprisingly, just as comfortable and confident she is onstage; she is equally at home on a Yamaha bike (though the Bullet is her favourite she confesses!). A noted vocalist, remarkable violin and viola player, acclaimed accompanying artist, gold medallist from AU, top Akashavani artiste, an authoress... this versatile lady has performed at various prestigious events right from the age of eight. Hailed as a noted exponent of carnatic music, this is Dr. Pantula Rama, a Doctorate in Music, which was awarded for her research work and thesis on, ‘A study of the shaping of an ideal musician through Saadhana’. Born in a family with a strong affinity to classical music, Rama was initially coached by her father, Sri Pantula Gopala Rao (Violinist, former engineer in All India Radio) and later by the musical guru Sri Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao. Also into music is her mother Smt. Pantula Padmavathi, a noted Veena artist. Her father’s transferable job didn’t hinder her musical lessons - the committed girl travelled alone every vacation back to Vizag to continue training under her guru. She had to make a choice when she scored a medical seat after her twelfth class - medicine or music; needless to say, persuing music was her inevitable decision. Her commitment to music was not easy. Travelling every vacation back to Vizag and forgoing her chance at a medical career were some of the tough choices she had to make. But Rama has no regrets. Never idle or complacent, she explored other avenues as well; in addition to being highly qualified in carnatic vocal and instrumental, she has also dabbled in fashion designing, Yoga and Reiki.

Any good talented musician will achieve fame and credit if he sticks to his ideals and refuses to compromise” says Rama explaining her stance. She considers that though carnatic music might not be as paying and promising as other fields, it is evergreen. “The recession came and went, but it had no impact on us. If a person is really talented, this field is very promising. It might take time, but talent does pay.” Her advice to aspirants is to stick to their principles and not compromise either for the organisers or the media. If more and more talented people refrain from running after the organisers and refuse to budge from their values, the pressure on artistes to compromise would reduce, she feels.

Irrespective of her trysts in other spheres, she is passionate about her music. And marriage only intensified that passion. Her husband Sri MSN Murthy is himself a highly accomplished top-ranking musician. An AIR artiste himself, he is equally proficient in vocals, violin and the viola. In fact, they accompany each other - when one sings the other plays the violin in perfect harmony. Her motherin-law, Srimati M. Jalajakshi too is a legendary carnatic vocalist.

Today Rama conducts workshops and trains students in music when she is not touring the globe performing along with her husband. Some of her highly appreciated lecturedemos include ‘Musical excellence of Shyama Sastri’, ‘Sadhana of Carnatic Music’, ‘Ragam Tanam Pallavi’. She has also successfully conducted the elaborate musical opera written and composed by Thyagaraja, ‘Nowkacharitam’. It beautifully portrays mischievous Lord Krishna tantalising the naive gopikas. Dr. Pantula Rama has picked up various awards and felicitations over the years; a few notable ones include the Tambura Prize by Kalasagaram, Secunderabad; the Best Musician, an award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Outstanding Lady Vocalist, award from Madras Music Academy.

Highly accomplished and lauded today, the couple never hankered for fame or compromised in any manner. They refrained from ‘marketing’ themselves or requesting anyone for favours. “We always believed in hard work and integrity, it took time, but today we are recognised for our ideals and talent. The outcome has been really good.

Yo vizag! March 2010

Socially and environmentally conscious, Rama and her husband have taken a sentient decision not to add to the already burgeoning population. She and her mother-inlaw avoid silk as “silk worms are boiled just to make a sari”. Plastics too are frowned upon in their household.

chool friends tend to drift away as marriage, family, careers and job assignments take control of their lives. And a chance to meet those long lost buddies years later is a moment to cherish and an occasion to catch-up, compare and reminisce. The old friends of Visakhapatnam had one such enjoyable trip down the memory lane at ‘Nostalgia’, a get-together for them after a gap of twenty five long years.

16

Nikhil Oza and Lalita (Lulu) were the brains behind Nostalgia, a reunion of friends from various schools in Vizag, regrouping almost twenty five years later. Taking time off their busy schedules, Nikhil and Lulu took up the task of organising the event. To celebrate their friendship, they dug all the known directories and sources available, trying to rope in everyone. The party was arranged on 6th March, 2010 at The Park hotel. Nostalgia turned out to be a great success, with everyone who was contacted turning up, keen to meet and impress old friends and appreciating the chance to interact and renew old ties. What was most enjoyable was getting to find out how each turned out in life, who had made it, who hitched up with whom and whether childhood ambitions actually worked out for them. Considering that they were meeting after 25 years, interacting with the media was nowhere on their agenda, they were too busy reliving old memories and enjoying their old batch mates’ companionship! But nevertheless, the Yo Vizag team managed to get a few of them to share their memories. Krishnan Raghavan, the once ‘shy guy in shorts’ is now successfully working in the US. Amongst other things, he misses the “smell of India and the beaches of Vizag. You only realise it when you leave the place” he comments. Regarding his ambitions, he ruefully adds “I always had an ambition to grow tall, even today the hope of growing tall is still alive”. Srinivas, better known back then as ‘Dubba’ to his friends, today runs a manufacturing unit in Hyderabad. “There was no T.V 25 years back. We friends roamed around the roads, played gully cricket, cycling and spent the most of time with each other. Vizag was then a quieter place and was much cooler. There was just a single road to the beach and we friends came to the beach almost daily” says Srinivas. According to Nikhil Oza, “This one evening takes us 25 years back in time. It felt like old flames reigniting, never to burn out again. People in this party are in real high places, some CEO’s and some Vice Presidents. There is nothing which comes in the way of friendship, not even a cyclone”. Gupta of Gupta Bros adds, “Memories go much further. I feel 25 years younger today. Meeting at one point is very important and it is very difficult to meet up, after 25 years!” Mohinita, an old student from Visakha Valley recollects “as the assembly took place, we could see the blue sea with waves and the colour of the sea changed as the day progressed. There is no place like Vizag”. And finally as Ravindra of IIAM, aptly add, “We meet many people but do not recognize them, but there are few who would not go away from memories and they are called friends. The present generations have to learn the importance of friendship.”

“The world is a small global village and in that context India is a smaller village” - Behlul Masalia’s thought as he set off on an epic journey; traversing the length and breadth of the country on his trusted steed, the 350 cc Royal Enfield Thunderbird bike. Inspired by the movie, that he saw in his first year BBA at Pune: ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’, wherein Che Guevara travels with his friend from Argentina to Columbia, about 5000 miles on a bike, Behlul planned to make a similar journey. And his planning was meticulous. He plotted his route with a GPS and Google maps, stocked up on safety gear, bike spares, nutrition bars, GluconD, medicines and loads of enthusiasm. But his first task was to convince his sceptical parents. Finally, after ‘die-hard convincing’ and three months of contemplating, his parents gave the goahead.

Safety was his prime concern. He travelled only in daylight and took adequate rest overnight to remain fit and alert the next day. For food, Behlul stopped at the dhabas on the highway and mostly ate Punjabi cuisine.” During my whole journey I met a lot of wonderful people who were very kind and helpful” said Behlul. He recollects how the manager of one of the motels where he stayed overnight agreed to serve him breakfast as early as 5.30 a.m., whereas the time to serve breakfast was only after 7.30 a.m. Apart from two technical snags which he could rectify thanks to his spares; his Thunderbird gave him no problems.

Regarding the roads, he found the Golden Quadrilateral great, and actually felt that “truck drivers are the best drivers... it’s amazing to see the control, some of them had over such On 24th Jan, 2010, Behlul Jafar Masalia set off on his 350 huge vehicles, especially when some cc Royal Enfield Thunderbird bike, on the Golden stupid bus or car tried overtaking from Quadrilateral (GQ). His most memorable moment; “when in a resort in Ranthanbhore, sometime late in the evening, I saw a leopard just a few feet away. It killed a dog and dragged it off into the darkness of the wilderness and I stood there cold for a while”. And his most thrilling episode was when “in the middle of the night, I was woken up to very loud knocks on the door. I opened the door and there was an Inspector with around four other plain clothes policemen. They began to ask me questions about where I had come from, the purpose of my trip, asked for my documents, etc. The nearest person I could have contacted was at least 300 Kms away so I just kept calm and answered everything they asked. Turns out, they had received a call from the owner of Palace Utelia, who had reported me for suspicious activity and they had come to investigate..! I was at least 20-25kms from Utelia. Even though the incident shook me up, I was amazed that they had traced me out in the middle of nowhere... Finally, it all ended at around 4am. It was a nightmarish experience!” “Those 43 days were the best days of my life, where my dreams of exploring India became a reality and I’m happy I reached back home in a single piece”. For now Behlul says he has no plans for another road trip in the near future and wants to give his total time in the growth of his family business.

ith affordable financing and a wide range of carssuiting almost any kind of budget, today a car, more than a luxury is an asset in almost every household. In fact, many households out of necessity and convenience do invest in a second car as well. Whether investing in a second car or a first one, for fuel economy (green house gasses and pollution aren’t going anywhere!), size (parking a big car in the ever-declining parking spots is not exactly a cakewalk) and budget constraints; there are many small cars in the market to pick and choose from. In the small car segment, in addition to the already existing Indian brands, there are quite a few international brands too increasing the available options. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Skoda, Chevy, Volkswagen and Honda are vying for consumer preference.

Amongst all the brands in the small car segment today, Maruti Suzuki stands out. Every model of Maruti Suzuki is best in its class and assures value for the money spent. The options include Maruti800, Alto, WagonR, Zen Estilo, Swift, Ritz and the AStar. Maruti Suzuki is now fit with the new 1.2 K Series engine. The Hyundai range carries the 1.2 Kappa engine. Hyundai with its Santro, Getz, i10 and i20, is usually preferred by young working professionals. Snazzy to look at, the diesel segment of these cars, with its Mercedes engine gives good performance. Honda, a new entrant offers Jazz which is a small car with big space. But for a small car, Jazz is pretty heavy on the pocket and the after sales service is also expensive. But it is the best petrol engine. Honda is the only company in the world, which has been successfully manufacturing only petrol variants for the past 60 years, but now plans to enter the diesel segment in India. GM is capturing the market via its Chevrolet brand offerings, Spark and Beat Spark is very cute, spacious. The suspensions

are good and the car has a good built quality. Beat is a new baby from Chevrolet. The looks are very fresh. The styling is jazzed, contemporary and has stylish interiors. The braking is good and the interiors are pretty spacious. Fiat (often wrongly mistaken for TATA) uses a new multi aired engine, which is believed to give a mileage of 25 kmpl! Fiat cars are the best in quality and are assured to stay for life. In the small cars segment it has the Palio Stile, 500 and the Grande Punto. Fiat has the best diesel engines and provides its engines to Chevy, TATA and even Maruti Suzuki. Tata is the brand, which every Indian trusts. All Tata cars give good mileage. And for the after sales service, Tata has many service stations to cater for servicing needs. In the small car segment Tata offers, Indica and the much acclaimed Nano. To wrap up, amongst petrol variants, Maruti Suzuki is generally preferred, but for style and looks, get a Hyundai or Honda. Chevrolet is also a good option but Tata has the cheapest cars.

An integral part of any home or workplace is the woodwork. Plywood is the core of woodwork that is topped with either laminates or veneers. These laminates and veneers in their innovative designs, styles and textures provide a contemporary look to an otherwise barren surface. There are quite a few brands available in the market, providing ample scope to pick and select the perfect finish that blends with and augments the interiors of any space. There are a whole host of decorative veneers and laminates that go with the chic and contemporary look of the house. Offices too can go for subtle interiors with the help of such designs.

Decorative laminates and veneers have various applications. Specifically, wherever plywood is used, they can be put to good use. Be it on table tops, cupboard doors, wall panels, beds, cabinets, kitchen surfaces to name a few, in homes. In offices too there is a great demand for them. For an office space and the general interiors of a home, subtle colours lighten up and enhance the decor. While for a kid’s room, go in for bright colourful finishes. Various self embossed and metallic finish laminates are also in vogue these days. Veneers, which are basically barks of trees, sometimes left in their original shape and many a time treated with colour, also give a classic impression. According to Shrawan and Diwakar of Encore Plywoods, there are various types of plywood in the market; commercial, boiling water resistant IS303 (BWR), boiling water proof IS701 (BWP), shuttering and decorative to name a few. If Vizag is known for its Steel plant, the city has amongst others, one significant luminary to thank, Sri Tenneti Viswanadham. A great personality, he first fought for India’s freedom and then for Vizag’s development. The city, acknowledging his greatness named a park after him, but ironically, a discussion with a few college grads in that very same park made us, the Yo Vizag team realise that the very little was known about Sri Viswanadham. Hence, this time round, we dedicate the Eminent Personality column to the late freedom fighter, Sri Tenneti Viswanadham.

Always associated with the Steel Plant, Sri Tenneti Viswanatham was a great visionary who had fought relentlessly for establishment of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant by spearheading the ‘Visakha Ukku - Andhrula Hakku’ (Visakha Steel is Andhra’s right) agitation. Back then, when Andhra Pradesh almost lost the Steel Plant project to Salem, this agitation forced the Central Government to reconsider their move and subsequently, the Vizag Steel Plant came about which accelerated the growth and development of Vizag. (Consequently, the Central Government authorised an additional Plant in Salem) Tenneti Viswanatham was born on September 21, 1895 at Lakkavaram, Visakhapatnam District, the second son of Gowripati Sastry and Chittemma. As per the norm, he married at the age of sixteen, but lost his young wife. He never remarried. A graduate of Mrs. AVN College, he completed his BA (Hons) in literature form the Madras Presidency College and took his Bachelor’s Degree in law in Trivandrum. As a student, he was inspired by Annie Besant, Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. He started practise as a lawyer in the 1920s, and when the Mahatma launched the Non-Cooperation Movement, he gave up practice and moved to the Sabarmati Ashram. While stationed there, he was on the staff as a Lecturer at the Gujarat Vidyapeeth of which Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the Vice-Chancellor. After his father’s demise, Tenneti returned home and became the president of the District Congress Committee. He was also an AICC member. Plunging into the Non Cooperation Movement of 1922, he courted imprisonment between 1930 and 1946 for his participation in the Salt Satyagraha (1930), Individual Satyagraha (1940) and Quit India Movement (1942). Post independence, he was the Chief Parliamentary Secretary in 1946 (and Parliamentary Secretary in 1937) to Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu and later Minister for Finance, Law and Endowments in the first Andhra Ministry of 1953. He was also the Visakhapatnam Municipal Chairman in 1947. He was elected as MLA and MP a number of times, and he had left the Congress and was with the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party Jawaharlal Nehru invited him as the Chairman of the Company Law Advisory Commission and the Coffee Board. As a Minister, he was instrumental in the setting up of Sri Venkateswara University, Prakasam Barrage and Nandikonda (Nagarjuna) Project. A versatile Parliamentarian, he was well known for his intelligence, encyclopaedic knowledge coupled with wit and sarcasm. Later, he fought against the Emergency and was detained under MISA. A lesser known fact is that the prominent Jagadamba Junction, with a statue in his honour was officially rechristened Tenneti Square. Viswanatham garu was a humanist whose focus was never on himself, but always on the society as a whole. He was the secretary of the committee which brought out the historic 18 volume report on zamindari abolition which had become the basis of land reforms. He gave eight acres of land for the Sarvodaya Bhoodan movement. He rejected “tamra patra” and the political pension granted by the Union Government to freedom fighters. In 1974, he refused to agree to his name being recommended for the award of Padma Bhushan. On a more personal level, Viswanatham garu was linguist, fluent in Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, Persian and English. A prolific writer and a playwright, he authored the four-volume biography of Sri Prakasam Pantulu. In addition he had many other books to his credit, including a commentary on Brahmasutras and a book on “Similes and romantic content of Rig Veda”. He founded the Visakha Saraswata Vedika in 1960, to promote literature and culture. In a nutshell Tenneti was a rare blend of spiritualism, politics and literature. He passed away peacefully on the night of November 10, 1979, after lecturing at the Vedika on the greatness of the Ramayana.

‘Dhaatri’ a Resource Centre for Women and Children working in Andhra Pradesh, in association with ‘Samata’, an advocacy organisation for adivasi rights organised this three day programme where students from four states met and shared their views on tribal living. According to the organisers the adivasi child today, is at the cross-roads of education where their unique traditional knowledge receives little recognition from the mainstream society so much so that they are soon losing faith in this knowledge. While a lot of this wisdom still continues to be alive in these young adivasi minds, a need to sensitise and make it relevant to the mainstream children is what the congress was looking at. Each school put up a stall portraying their traditions and culture. While some had put up models of their irrigation system, medicines, agriculture and experiences of living with nature, there were some who’d built models of their houses showing the architecture. Hunting too was a common issue depicted. Apart from the exhibition of stalls a number of workshops and sessions too were held. There were group discussions on various topics like rain water harvesting, astronomy, mathematics etc. that the students put to use in their day to day lives. With the help of local artisans of different tribes, workshops on traditional handwork were also held. Fusion of tribal songs and dance, an archery contest, exchange of traditional cuisine and theatre performances too formed a part of the three day meet. The students came with different perceptions in mind but went back feeling fulfilled. With even more respect for their rich cultural heritage, they were able to share their knowledge. The congress brought about a true consciousness among the students making them feel unique and special in their own way. The organisers too felt accomplished and are looking forward to better participation for this annual event in the forthcoming years. Samata is a voluntary organisation working for the tribal people trying to strengthen their traditional practises through education. They’re working with 40 schools in different villages and their Vizag unit has a resource centre and residential school where they have a special curriculum and also hold teacher training sessions.

“There is no unfortunate person more than a mentally handicapped person in the whole of the universe” - T. Saraswati Devi, the founder of Lebenshilfe. And to rectify that aspect of society, Mrs Saraswati Devi (Sarah, to her German counterparts) started Lebenshilfe; an institution which attempts to give these special children a life with meaning and utility. The parent organisation, German Lebenshilfe was founded in 1958 by Mr. Tom Mutters, a Dutchman with 15 parentmembers. In German ‘Leben’ means Life and ‘Hilfe’ means Help. Lebenshilfe thus means Life Help. Lebenshilfe, Visakhapatnam was founded in 1980, by Mrs. Saraswathi Devi Tallapragada (Sarah), a Special Educationist (USA) and an Intensive-In-service trainee of Lebenshilfe, Germany in the field of Mental Retardation. This institution was inaugurated by Tom Mutters with twelve mentally challenged children as a private, voluntary and non-profitable organization, in ten thatched rooms which functioned as class rooms. Today the institution nurtures 415 mentally challenged students including 110 hostellers hailing from poorer sections of the society and provide them with state-of-the-art facilities and training. This 28 year old service-oriented institution is situated in a building generously allocated by the Municipal Corporation, Visakhapatnam at M.V.P. Colony located on the sea shore and opposite to Lumbini Park. Lebenshilfe trains and teaches them to live independent lives in the society. Yo vizag! March 2010

The institute is staffed with thirty three teachers, many of which are parents of these children themselves who work in tandem with specialists in Special Education. Majority of the students in Lebenshilfe suffer from problems in understanding, expression and self protection. “Even if the student is hungry, he/she does not know to express hunger. He/she is not able to protect himself from any danger. Students cannot even categorise their gender. Here we teach and train the students from anything to everything in a way that the student understands and which is necessary for basic survival” says one of the teachers. These children need lots of motivation and they respond to unconditional love. Mental retardation is a condition which can occur in any child between the age of 0 -18. Though there is natural physical growth of the body, the mental growth in these children is reduced due to cell damages in the brain. The school uses various teaching and training techniques to help children with this condition.

30

Teachers use a method of matching - grouping identification - naming - generalisation to help the child understand what he/ she is being taught. Every student is specified as a unit and is trained accordingly. The school uses many modern therapies like the Snozalen Therapy, which is a sensory therapy to activate the five sense organs of the severely retarded children; a toy room, where the child is given the freedom to open up his/ her heart and express freely and sand play therapy, which helps to activate the damaged brain cell through sensory stimulations. The classes are categorized into four divisions - primary, secondary, pre-vocational and vocational. Once the child reaches the stage of vocational, he/she is almost ready to be independent in the outside world. Trainings in tailoring, book binding, carpentry, candle making are given to the children in vocational classes, which enable to earn a livelihood. There are few students of this school who are already earning. Two students are working in the Gateway Hotel, one works in the kitchen and the other works as a plumber. Some work in Xerox shops near the passport office. Children are also trained in many forms of dance and they perform all over the country. The school has its own cricket team which participates in Special Olympics each year and has won many awards. Lebenshilfe is run on donations given by people. Everything from a fan to the flooring is donated. The school also has hostel facility, with dormitories separate for boys and girls. The founder, T. Saraswati Devi claims that the government has not released funds for almost 2 years now, because of which the school is facing financial problems and any sort of aid small or big is welcomed.

There's a couple I know who had been married for almost five years, earning well, living well, enjoying a heavy social life with no kids, yet there was a sense of discontentment most of the time. Their fights were frequent, mostly ugly ones and their life was a complete mess; until one day, a well wisher gifted them a puppy. An adorable, cuddly, cute little thing, who turned their lives upside down. With the little one came responsibilities, sleeplessness and a lot of patience. Their socialising came to a halt, communication between the two reached an all time high and most importantly there was a whiff of love blossoming yet again in the otherwise boring household. ‘Charm’ as the puppy was later named taught them to love again. The therapeutic effect of that little pup changed their lives.

Research has shown that pets are man’s best companions and having them around brings life to mundane surroundings. It has also been proved that pets bring forth a nurturing habit in people and a pet owner live longer, and even recover from severe health problems. Coming home after a long hard day at work and taking the dog for a stroll, stroking the cats’ fur or making conversation with a bowl of fish can reduce stress levels drastically. Many behavioural analysts recommend people with high stress levels to have a pet at home as animals provide unconditional love and are a constant source of affection and comfort. There have been cases where terminally ill patients have been presented with a pet and their life span has increased. The urge to live longer just to take care of the pet has helped them in their journey forward. Depression is yet another problem that can be treated with Animal Assisted Therapy (or AAT) as it is referred to in many parts of the world. One of my friends loved talking to his dog. He would discuss the entire day’s activities with the dumb animal. At the end of the day he was happy deeming that the dog helped him take the right decisions as the dog was not opinionated. The point I’m making here is that talking to people can misguide you once in a while, but an animal allows you to think clearly, without taking sides. A man’s best friend, pets are the best answer to a lonely life, they banish loneliness. A pet can feel his owners’ pain. Taking the human mind off loneliness, grief, pain, and fear, it brings laughter and offers an immense sense of security and protection. Not just adults but children too are overwhelmed with the presence of a pet in the house. Children share a special bond with their pet, one indescribable in words. It’s best felt when you see a kid sitting on a dog, trying to make him run like a horse, or teaching words he’s learnt at school to his parakeet!

Going green has an all new meaning these days. Along with all the environment friendly practises that we undertake, a more recent concept out these days is ‘Green Buildings’. Also known as Green construction or sustainable building, the aim of the concept is to reduce the environmental impact of building. According to the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) a green building is one which uses less water, optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building. In order to create more awareness about the concept the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with IGBC organised a one day conference on Green Building in our city. The CII YI Vizag Chapter had also been actively involved in making this program conference successful.

At the conference, Honourable Union Minister of State for Human Resource, Development (Higher Education), Smt. D Purandeswari, emphasised the need to build and develop in a sustainable manner by adopting eco friendly practices. Speaking about the environment being a priority for the government, she appreciated the catalytic role played by Confederation of Indian Industry in advancing the green buildings concepts. She also emphasised the need to impart the principles of green amongst the school children and share the innovative use of technology to prevent environment degeneration. IGBC’s vision is to usher in a green building movement and facilitate India emerging as one of the world leaders in green buildings by 2010. Andhra Pradesh has pioneered many such initiatives like the First Platinum rated green building in the country - The CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre at Hyderabad, First educational institution to be rated green at Hyderabad - Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management, First Platinum Certified IGBC Green Home at Hyderabad - Avani Residence, First airport in India and one of the few airports in the world to adopt green concepts - Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad, First green rated government building in Andhra Pradesh, the HUDA Annex building. Chairman CII, Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Harish Chandra Prasad stressed on the need for tier II cities to inculcate the green concept as there is scope for significant growth in these cities in the near future, Vizag too being one of them. He said, “CII Andhra Pradesh considers that Energy and Environment must go together and hence formed a Panel on Energy and Environment, which would initiate activities related to Energy that is environmentally sustainable”. CII-IGBC has scheduled as many as 50 programmes for this year focusing on Water management, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, New Ventures India, besides many others.

The store opening in December had no political bigwig or cine field star; aptly, it was opened by a retailer bigwig, M Venkata Ramana of CMR. The showroom with quasi-lounge settings and classy ethnic decor is a temptation to sit, converse and browse through the designer collection in relaxed comfort. When Shanti came to Vizag a little less than a year ago, she realised that this was the city that could appreciate class and style. That is when she met Amrutha who helped Shanti make her dream a reality. With Shanti’s taste and Amrutha’s acumen, they launched Sahasra. Right from the onset, their notion was not to create shop that just sells ‘Saris and dress materials’, their vision was more towards providing the customer with high end, exclusive, timeless designer wear. Each piece has been handpicked by Shanti, and most have been designed by her personally. Except for the digitally printed Georgette saris and linen, handloom and hand-worked pieces dominate the collection. Kalamkari designs with vegetable dyes, hand embroidered designs with fine stitches, and single-sideweave zari works depicting astoundingly beautiful motifs and designs on pure natural fabrics like cottons, Tussar silks, tissue silks, jute and Kanchi Pattu. Each designer sari has a ready-to-stitch designed blouse, ensuring that the final ensemble is just perfect.Shanti has put thought behind each sari and dress material. Like the rich zari work on tissue silks makes the sari grand yet lightweight. The perfect blend of jute and Tussar with mind blowing motifs embroidered on it and in lovely shades makes the pieces unique and elite. “Ethnic and traditional with a contemporary touch, classy but not flashy or gaudy” is how a satisfied customer describes the pieces.

-Dantu Siva Prasad Adi Sankaracharya in praise of Lord Jagannath Standing majestically in the crowded one town area of Vizag, is the 180 year old Sri Jagannatha Swamy Temple. This temple, situated on the Main Road near Poorna Market has an illustrious past. It is said that Sri Garuda Jagannayakulu family on divine instructions unearthed Panchaloha Idols of Sri Mahavishnu in the form of Sri Ranganatha Swamy in 1832 at the place where the temple stands. Consequently, a small thatched shed was constructed and Sri Chalamayya Dikshitulu was appointed to perform regular sevas to the Lord.

‘Som etim es in grea t happ ines s Lord Jagannatha makes a loud concert with His flute in the grov es on the bank s of the Yamuna. He is like a bumblebee tasting the beautiful lotus like faces of the cowherd damsels of Vraja, and great personalities such as Laksmi, Siva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesa worship His lotus feet. May that Jaga nnat ha Swa mi be the objec t of my vision!’

One of the prominent festivals of this temple is the annually conducted Rathyatra (Rathotsavam) or chariot festival. Akin to the famed Jagganath of Puri, this festival is conducted in a grand manner with numerous devotees attending. The ten day festival is very popular amongst the locals and migrants to the city from Orissa and West Bengal as they believe that a glimpse of Lord Jagannath in his chariot gives salvation. Images of Lord Jagannath - the Lord of the Universe, his sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra are taken out in a procession in the chariot. Thousands of devotees pull the chariot to Turner’s choultry, symbolically the Gundicha Mandir, as is done in Orissa. After about a week, on ‘Ashadha Sukla Dasami’, the 10th day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha (JuneJuly), return journey or ‘Bahuda Yatra’ of the deities commences in the same manner from the choultry temple to the main temple. During the Rathostavam festivities many cultural programs like classical dances, devotional music and religious discourses by eminent persons are organised. The temple authorities constructed a Mandapam at a cost of Rs12 Lakhs in the Turner Choultry for the Rathostavam. The temple is in need of another Rs5 lakhs to complete the pending works. After the festival, 10000 devotees are served food by the temple authorities. On every Pournima day too on average 300 devotees are served food. This ancient temple is also a regular venue for the Hari Katha and Purana Sravanam and a large number of devotees attend these regular programs too. Another great festival is the kalyanostavam in the Month of Vysakha. In Sravan masam, special prayers to the goddess of wealth and the consort of Sri Mahavishnu, Lakshmi Devi are largely attended. The Margasira ‘Kumkumarchana’ and Akasa Deepardhana ceremony are popular amongst the locals. Jestapournami Abhisekham is also very popular. Normal day rituals include trikalarchana, astottaram etc. On Tuesdays Anjaneya Swamy Abisekham , Thursdays five types of Harathi and on Fridays special prayers to Goddess Lakshmi are conducted. This temple is open from 6 am to 12 noon and again from 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening every day. Many devotees testify that the Lord here ensures that all their desires are fulfilled. Edida Venkata Sita Ramacharyulu as the chief priest assisted by others conducts the rituals with great devotion and sincerity. The temple is under the supervision of EO B. Trimurthulu who will be glad to offer guidance and information on this temple. He can be reached on mobile number 9848521265.

The New Year’s festival, Ugadi, a major festival in Andhra Pradesh heralds the New Year even for Kannada, Marathi and Sindhi friends. Falling on March 16 this year, the new calendar year commences from this day on. Unlike the Western Calendar System, the Telugu calendar has a 60 year cycle with different names for each year. The Word Ugadi came from yuga + aadi, yuga means era, aadi means start, The start of an era. This year 2010 Ugadi marks the beginning of Vikruti Nama Samvatsaram as per Telugu Panchangam. Hindu mythology says Lord Brahma, created universe on the Ugadi day. Since then, this day is celebrated as a New Year day. Ugadi symbolises the beginning of spring (vasant ruthu). On the Ugadi day traditionally a special preparation made of six different tastes from bitter to sweet called Ugadi Pacchadi is eaten, acknowledging that life ahead is a mix of success, challenge and failure.

As a handy guide, listed below are the Telugu months of Vikruti Nama Samvatsaram with the corresponding months of the Western Calendar. Also there is a list of the Hindu festivals in this year.

Eating out at fast-food centres is what every kid enjoys. This summer, reduce your dependence on the local eatery and have your kids singing praises of your versatility by making a few of those popular fast food snacks at home; and satisfy your concerns for nutrition too by adding a healthier twist. Try your hand at making Fried Chicken, Burgers, Bhel puri, or smoothies this summer.

BURGERS Ingredients For meat burger: Lean ground meat For vegetable burger: Boil 3 big potatoes, 1 carrot, 1 cup green peas and mash well Salt to taste 1 tsp garlic powder (optional) 1 tsp freshly ground pepper 1 tbsp dried oregano 2 Sesame buns 4 large pieces of white cheddar cheese 1 large onion ñ sliced 1 large tomato ñ sliced Coleslaw (1 cup Mayonnaise mixed with generous handful of finely shredded cabbage) Ketchup Yellow Mustard Dill pickle (optional) sliced thin 2-4 iceberg lettuce leaves

Notes: Use a whole-grain bun. For meat-based burgers, grind up fresh, extra-lean, top-quality meat trimmed of visible fat. To make the patty juicier, mix in a moist, flavourful ingredient, like soy sauce, minced garlic, tomato-based chilli sauce or BBQ sauce. Dress it with condiments such as mustard and BBQ sauce instead of mayonnaise-based sauces, and use plenty of raw vegetable fillers (like onions, tomato, and lettuce). Top it with reduced-fat cheese. A very important step to recreating the McDonald’s burger flavour is searing the patties properly, which seals in the juices and flavours. Searing is the process of applying pressure to frozen patties as they cook on the griddle. This is done about 20 seconds after laying the patties on the grill by pressing down firmly for about 2-3 seconds with the back of a spatula, be careful not to smash them. †After searing them, sprinkle generously with†burger seasoning. McDonald’s seasoning, used on the burger during the cooking process is a well mixed combine of 4 tablespoons salt, 2 tablespoons MSG, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon onion powder. While toasting the buns apply light pressure in order to achieve uniform, even toasting. The buns can be toasted in advance and reheated. Yo vizag! March 2010

Method In a medium sized bowl combine the ground meat or mashed vegetable with the salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano. Shape a handful of the mixture into a round patty. If time permits, freeze them. On a well heated non-stick pan, put a bit of oil and place the burgers. After a few minutes, flip the burgers. Remove after about 3-4 minutes. Slice the burger bun in the centre, and toast both sides with a sparing amount of butter on the hot pan. Apply little mustard, then ketchup on the upper half (crown). On the lower half (heel) apply generous amount of coleslaw, lettuce, onion rings, sliced tomato, sliced pickle, patty, cheese slice and top with the upper half of the bun (crown). Dig in!

FRIED CHICKEN

Ingredients 8-10 Chicken pieces 2-3 cups low fat buttermilk 1/3 cup of fine bread crumbs 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder Salt to taste Pepper or chilli or paprika powder to taste Oil

The trick to making tasty oven-fried chicken is to dip skinless chicken breasts or thighs (cut into strips, if desired) in low-fat buttermilk, then coat the outside with a seasoned crumb mixture. Next spray cooking oil on the coated chicken pieces (on both sides). Bake in a preheated 450-degree oven until nicely brown (about 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the pieces). The secret preparation process that KFC uses is marinating the chicken for a couple hours in a salt and MSG solution. This makes the chicken moist and gives it great flavour.

Method Preheat the oven to 350 degrees In a bowl mix flour or 1/3 cup of fine bread crumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, chilli powder, salt and pepper to taste Dip the chicken pieces in the buttermilk Roll chicken pieces in mixture Spray a baking sheet with oil and arrange the pieces and little spray oil on them Bake for 1 hour

Ingredients 4 cups Puffed rice (Muri/Kurmura) 1 Onion finely chopped 2 Tomatoes finely chopped 1/2 cup Raw Mango finely chopped (optional) 1/4 cup Carrot finely grated 1/2 Cup Cucumber finely chopped 2 Potatoes boiled, peeled and cubed 1/4 cup steamed corn 1/4 cup boiled chana or boiled peas Salt, chilli powder to taste Small crisp puris, sev, roasted peanuts and coriander for garnishing Green Chutney (grind 2 cups coriander leaves, 1/2 cup mint leaves and 6 green chillies. Add salt and lemon juice to taste) Sweet/Sour Chutney (blend 1 cup thick tamarind extract, 1/2 cup Pitted Dates, 1 tbsp brown sugar or jaggery and 2 tsp Cumin Powder. Add salt and chilli powder to taste. Boil the above till they reduce by half and cool.)

BHEL PURI The best part of bhel is that it is popular with kids and through this medium you can get them to eat healthy salads. The options to be added are many, as long as there is the puffed rice and chutneys, the rest all are optional! There are also quite a few readymade branded chutneys available in the market like SmithJones, Fun Foods and Spencers.

Method Mix all the ingredients, add chutneys to taste, garnish with small crisp puris, sev, peanuts and coriander and serve immediately. Yo vizag! March 2010

SMOOTHIES A smoothie is a blended, chilled, sometimes sweetened beverage made from fresh fruit or vegetables. In addition to fruit, many smoothies include crushed ice, frozen fruit, honey or frozen yogurt, although some smoothies are 100% fruit. Frozen yogurt gives smoothies a thick, creamy, milkshake-like texture. For a lighter smoothie, use non-fat or 1% low-fat milk or yogurt instead of whole. Use half and half of milk and soy-milk to add extra protein and calcium. Fruit juices such as apple or pineapple juice, soy milk and dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and ice cream can be used as the smoothies liquid base. You can also use crushed ice or chilled purified water as the liquid base. Pour the liquid base into your blender jug and next add the fruit. Some harder fruits such as apple should be juiced first before blending with the base. Banana, mangoes and strawberry smoothies are popular.

Final Fantasy XIII Final Fantasy XIII is a console role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix and is the thirteenth instalment in the Final Fantasy series. The plot of Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a world known as Pulse and revolves around the story of the fal’Cie, mechanical beings with godlike power created by a being called the Maker. Each fal’Cie has crystals residing inside them. People who are marked by the fal’Cie are called l’Cie. Each l’Cie has a Focus, a goal that fal’Cie wants him or her to fulfill within a certain amount of time. However, the fal’Cie do not explicitly say what the goal is: l’Cie learn what their Focus is by interpreting visions that are given to them. L’Cie gain the ability to summon Eidolons but this ability comes with a price: if a l’Cie dies before completing his or her Focus, fails to tame his or her Eidolon, or fails to complete his or her Focus within a set period of time, he or she becomes a monster known as a Cie’th. If a l’Cie does complete his or her Focus, the reward is not much better: permanent transformation into a crystal. For this reason, being chosen as a l’Cie is seen as a curse.

LEADER

My Name Is Khan

Director: Sekhar Kammula Cast: Rana Daggubati

Director: Karan Johar Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Kajol

Director Sekhar Kammula's 'Leader' Telugu film has returned to silver screen with revised version of Bollywood's Nayak. The movie 'Leader' released today. It will be a treat for fans of Venkatesh as his nephew Rana Daggubati has been making debut on silver screen with Leader. Rana Daggubati is also son of Telugu producer D Sureshbabu. The movie leader will remind you Bollywood film Anil Kapoor starrer Nayak. The storyline, character and music are successfully displayed on celluloid. The movie Leader was produced by AVM productions. The story of Leader is based on dirty politicians where the hero takes stand to clean the system and dirty politics. The movie sends a message to common man that despite being of lots of corrupt politicians and officials, there is still a hope when a young and honest politician will lead from the front and change the system. In the movie Arjun Prasad (Rana Daggubati) joins politics to fulfill his fathers dream to make politics neat and clean. He works for his father's dream to build a corruption free, caste and religion free politics and state. During his fight against the corrupt system he comes to know about his father and his hidden face. He comes to know about her father's malpractices to amass huge wealth. After this, he takes the step to correct his fathers' all illegal works and returns the money to owners. The story of Leader is very simple but will touch your heart.

Here comes Karan johar’s another big blockbuster as My name is Khan. Shahrukh Khan has acted a role of mental boy who is suffering from some Asperger syndrome. In this movie Shahrukh Khan is all there to prove that he is a Muslim and not a terrorist .This film will remind you few scene of New York of john Abraham and traces of Kurban indeed. Both have little similarity in story ( that was colour and this is religion), but here this is Shahrukh with good acting, much better direction and a new concept. The whole story focusses on aftermath of 9/11 incident, how mindset about a Muslim hampered there dignity despite being a resident of that area. Shahrukh ( Rizwan) grew up with his mother (Zarina Wahab) in the Borivali suburb of Mumbai. As an adult, she falls in love with Kajol who is a widow with a child. After the 9/11 incident, he got arrested due to his religion ( Islam), thereafter his role begins, proving himself and his community to explain – Every Muslim is not a terrorist. Acting wise Shahrukh and Kajol is fantabulous. It reminds me Shahrukh of Swades or Chak De India, which was one of his best acting in his career. kajol has supported him very well. The screenplay by Shibani Bhatija definitely needs a big round of applause. Direction by Karan doesn’t leave a question mark and songs are pretty soft and bit emotional with the best number Sajda.

Karthik Calling Karthik Director: Vijay Lalwani Cast: Farhan Akhtar,Deepika Padukone Karthik Calling Karthik, follows Karthik Narayan and his maddening journey that he has, apparently with himself. The story begins with Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) being a simple and timid pushover. He gets to his nerves- end when his heartless bloodhound of a boss (Ram Kapoor) fires him for no fault of his. He decides it's time to put an end to his pathetic existence since he lacks the gall to set things right. But then one phone call, yes from Karthik himself, promises to change everything for his personal best. If only he'd do everything that the caller instructs him to, his life would be a joyride. So the caller says. The transformation of Karthik is quick. So, Karthik is

high on life and the daily dose of pep-talk at 5 am on the phone is his drug. But he is not wily enough to know that the perks bring along their share of problems. So when Karthik breaks his rule of omerta about the phone calls he receives from himself, things turn bad. They turn ugly when he gives in to the demand of his real-life girlfriend to not take the phone call of his virtual well wisher. This is the point where Karthik's downfall begins and sort of the story's too. While the first half of the film takes you on an intriguing journey of Karthik's loser life turning into a winning one, the second half brings down the pace and interest. The film is of the kind that's supposed to make practical sense. But it sort of doesn't. Instead it gives you that immense gratification whenever any film shows an ordinary guy getting that extraordinarily gorgeous girl and she sticks to him. So if you're the kind who would like a film just because it's got a happy ending and don't give a damn about the nuances of story etc, then you'll enjoy this one!
