I am a Registered Nurse and I had struggled with yo-yo dieting my entire adult life; was “middle aged” and feeling old, tired, achy, and depressed. Of course, as a medical professional and cardiac nurse, I “knew” the health risks of obesity, and was not a good role model for the patients I encountered at Cardiac Care Associates on a daily basis. I could preach the whole “heart healthy diet and exercise” speech, but who would listen? Being obese myself and with a significant family history of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer, I was headed down a frightening path. Every “diet” I tried failed, because I could not stick to them very long. If I did manage to lose weight, I would go back to my old eating habits and gain all the weight back, plus a few more pounds. Would I ever learn the secret to losing weight and keeping it off? How did my skinny friends do it? I struggled with stress eating, a busy lifestyle (“too busy to cook healthy meals”), and took care of everybody else but myself. Co-dependent perhaps? As a staff member, I sat through an introductory seminar at Cardiac Care Associates 3 years ago and began to realize my problem: too many carbohydrates, of all types, and processed junk food! To hear “you can lose 2-5 lbs per week, you will not be hungry, and you don’t have to exercise” clinched it for me. Sounded too good to be true, but it was time to embark on a new journey to good health! I was DONE with “dieting.” By strictly adhering to The Healthy Weigh Now plan, I was able to lose 58 lbs and 32 inches in just 18 weeks! My body fat dropped from 45% to 34%. The plan was simple to follow using tasty protein supplements along with non-starchy vegetables and lean protein. No I wasn’t hungry, I did not exercise, and I had energy to spare. I even weighed less than my husband for the first time in 40 years. This lowcarb plan was just what my body needed.

dear readers People often ask me, “How did you start writing?” While it is hard to pinpoint the exact moment that I fell in love with words, paper, books and writing, I am reminded daily of the many letters shared between my Nana and me. It started when I was in elementary school. The exchange of letters between the two of us that were filled with camp experiences, school friends and new books was like fresh air and breath to me. I longed for each letter and still remember the disappointment when an expected return letter did not come in the mail quickly. Plopped on my favorite couch, today, I long for more time and endless hours to write like I did as a child. And...every summer it happens. I am afforded the time: a great vacation to Jamaica and the ocean to bask and be inspired. To write, each day, when the sunset in Jamaica, is my only chore. For ten days, I am able to be quiet, gather my thoughts and let my heart sing as the creative juices get going. I write like nobody’s business... for that I am grateful. The exchange and life shared, with no interruption on the beach enables me to write letters, thank you notes and messages to the many friends and family I share space with. Thank you, Pat Wirth; our guest columnist, Kristina Bouweiri - a DMV, favorite CEO and Robin Finnell - this issue’s cover WOMAN. Kudos and hugs to every cover WOMEN, friends, family and staff, throughout the various communities i serve. Celebrating words and writing about the many experiences from my couch on a summer day is this season’s special gift. It does not last long. For now, i am just going to enjoy the write. It’s A Mood Thing! By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe

W

hy is it that people around us can tell when it’s “that time of the month?” Do we look different, smell different, act different or what? If we took a poll and asked people the answer to that question most would respond: SHE ACTS DIFFERENTLY. Ever wondered why that is or what is actually happening during this time? No, your body has not been taken over by “Body Snatchers” and invaded by an alien. Most women admit they don’t feel like their usual selves and feel as though they are someone else. They don’t like what they are feeling, but still can’t seem to stop the behavior or outbursts. Why is that? Let’s talk a little anatomy and physiology. Yeah, we had to learn it, but I’m going to give you the Cliff Notes. An average menstrual cycle is 21-30 days. Most fall in the average of 28 days with two phases: follicular and luteal. During the first or follicular part of the cycle, the follicle or egg starts to develop and the uterine lining grows anticipating implantation. The second phase or luteal phase is when the egg is released or ovulated. If the stars are in alignment, the egg and sperm meet and become one, traveling down the yellow brick road to the uterus where implantation occurs. 9 months later, you get a baby! Both of these phases are controlled by a combination of Estrogen, Progesterone or Testosterone. Most problems with bleeding, mood, irregular cycles, infertility, no cycles, can be traced back to problems with the levels of your hormones. However, we commonly associate our moods to that time of the month. So what’s really going on here?

There is a condition we know as PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Most women are familiar with PMS. PMDD is a more serious form of PMS. Both are characterized by symptoms that usually occur 7 to 10 days before the start of the menstrual cycle and a few days when it starts. Women feel bloated, have mood changes, breast tenderness, fatigue, sleep changes such as insomnia and eating changes. You are not alone when you feel like you just got to have some chocolate or CARBS! Physical symptoms may also include joint or muscle pain, headache, weight gain due to fluid retention, acne and changes in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhea. Mood changes are common and no doubt is what puts folks on alert that your cycle is coming. The mood changes may be irritability, labile moods, sadness, anxiety, depression, anger or any combination of these. These changes are occurring in most instances during the luteal phase when the predominant hormone is progesterone. Hence why some women will get relief with the use of progesterone supplements during this time. Sadness, feeling down, overall dysphoria and even depressed moods can be related to hormones or low levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter released in the brain. Low levels of serotonin may be associated with dysphoria, sadness or depression, so we can use supplements such as St. John’s Wort and SSRI’s. SSRIs or selective serotonin uptake inhibitors are a class of meds which make serotonin last longer.

Testimonials Common medications in this class are Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro, Celexa, etc. A common one is Serafim or Prozac, dosed in smaller amounts than what is used for depression and has been very helpful with the control of mood swings and premenstrual emotions. There is help. SSRIs, progesterone creams and even birth control pills can regulate the imbalance. St John’s Wort, Chasteberry and essential oils all may be helpful, and exercise is always beneficial. For those who become totally debilitated by this time of the month, PMDD is the likely diagnosis and a combination of natural supplements, antidepressants, exercise and meditation may prove helpful. Anxiety or anxiousness is normally felt by everyone at some point. However, when anxiety interferes with the ability to lead a normal life, it may become necessary to seek professional help. Anxiety may present as panic, phobias or fears, or social anxiety. Anxiety which is debilitating and paralyzing is a mental illness and requires further diagnosis. Anxiety associated with PMS or PMDD is short lived and not as overwhelming as it resolves itself after the menstrual cycle starts. Anxiety may present as feelings of fear, problems sleeping, cold or sweaty hands, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dry mouth, inability to be still and calm, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, nausea, muscle tension and dizziness. Triggers for anxiety may be caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks, coffee, tea, or chocolate. So now you know there is no NEON sign flashing DANGER AHEAD! To know is to be forewarned. The Care And Wearing Of Your Retainer By John H. Jones, III DDS

O

rthodontic treatment is an expensive investment. To get the best results, you must wear and care for your retainer, this will ensure the best results possible. After removing the braces it is essential that you:

The purpose of wearing a retainer is to prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original position... Generally, retainers should be worn, at least until the bone and gums have had time to stabilize around the newly aligned teeth. As a respected orthodontist and expert, I recommend that children and teenagers wear their retainers through their 20s - at least until all permanent teeth have come and the jaws stop growing.

Care for your retainer Most retainers are removable and can be taken out while eating. Retainers can also be removed while flossing and brushing teeth. Brushing of course is recommended twice daily and after each meal. Many choose to wrap their retainer in a tissue or napkin when eating and YES, if forgotten the retainer is inadvertently thrown away. Thousands of dollars are spent annually on “forgetten” and thrown away retainers because many patients forget about them. A good solution - always carry your case with you. Ask your orthodontist about an extra case. Ladies may choose to have one at home and one in her purse. Mothers may choose to have one at home for their child(ren) and an extra case kept in the car or in Mom’s purse. Never leave the case or your retainer on a table or a bench, and wrapping it up in a napkin is probably one of the fasted way to lose it in a restaurant or while dining out. When servers clear the table, it is easy to see how and why the napkin with one’s retainer could be mistakenly picked up while clearing the table. Putting you retainer in a case or backpack immediately is a great protection and cost savings for your retainer.

How long will I have to wear my retainer? It depends. Your orthodontist and dentist will assist with your need and purpose for wearing the retainer. Each case in my office is evaluated and discussed. Growing Business Through Strategic Partnerships By Kristina Bouweiri

I

n 2009 I was having lunch with a friend, Heidi Kallett, CEO of The Dandelion Patch retail stores. We were discussing the recession and how it was affecting our businesses. She mentioned that her Reston store was her biggest challenge. She said the rent in the Reston Town Center was high and that her sales were solid but only marginally profitable. I pondered her dilemma for a moment and then I suggested that the two of us join forces on an event to bring her more business. Reston Limousine was founded in Reston -- in fact, at the Reston Town Center where her store was. I knew I had a lot of clients in Reston but had never reviewed our client list by geographic area. I found 1,500 clients in Reston. I then narrowed the list down to the top 250 corporate clients closest to the Reston Town Center. We then planned a lovely lunch at Il Fornaio Restaurant. The lunch would be superb with appetizer, choice of entrée and then to top it off, three desserts! I emailed my clients and invited them to a client appreciation lunch. I told them that I was inviting 250 and we could only accommodate 50 people so they had to RSVP right away. We had 50 RSVPs in the next 24 hours! So now I had a group of 50 clients for Heidi to meet and I thought to myself, “Who else would like to get in front of these clients?” Thanks to 10 years of networking, I had a vast list of companies to invite. The clients that were attending the lunch were the administrative assistants, HR managers and office managers of large corporations in Reston. I invited representatives from a florist, a catering company, an event planner, an office moving company, an office supply company, a bakery, a bank, a CPA firm, a housewares outlet store, an ice cream franchise, and a spa. The day arrived and we had a wonderfully successful event. Each sponsor was able to pitch their business for one minute and give out a door prize. When it was my turn to speak I reminded my clients that I have sedans, buses, vans and limousines. Some of them were only using our sedans. Some were only using buses. I also reminded them of all of our offerings on our website: the wine tours, shopping trips to New York and brew tours. I also told them that we now offer a car in any city in the world through an affiliate network. When it was over, the sponsors sat down to a beautiful lunch. They all looked at me and said, “When are we doing this again?” We replied

that it was a one-time deal. They then told me they wanted to do it every month. Then the bill arrived and it cost each of us $150 to take these clients to lunch. Out of the very first lunch, The Dandelion Patch got a $33,000 order for holiday cards. The event planner got a 500 person picnic! The florist picked up a 12 restaurant chain! Reston Limousine has benefited greatly by these lunches also. We now book clients in other cities all over the world. This lunch triggered an account with an international relocation client that gives us 20 trips a day. So we started doing this lunch every month. We moved it around from Reston to Tysons to DC to Alexandria to Chantilly to Herndon. Each month after the event, the sponsors would sit together and try and figure out how to get more business from these clients. Instead of trying to figure out ourselves how we could get more business from this group, I suggested that we start a focus group with our clients. I invited top clients to another lunch at Morton’s. This time it would be a working lunch. They could order whatever they wanted but we would be picking their brains. Here is what we learned: • Clients just want a great experience. • Most administrative professionals are overworked and underpaid. • They don’t have time to shop vendors. • They want one reliable vendor they can call each time and not have to worry about the service/product. • We learned that restaurants give incentives to admins to order to go lunches. • For every six lunches they ordered to go for their office meetings, they would get a free one. • We heard other catering companies were offering cash back incentives for online orders. • We learned that just because one person was using us, it did not mean we were getting all the business! It was a very interesting lunch. We received a lot of information from this group. educate. empower. inspire. inform.


The other great byproduct of this concept was that we had now created ambassadors for our companies within large corporations. We now had an advocate in the building who was suggesting everyone give us the business. Lastly, the sponsors all became ambassadors for each other’s business and we all started referring business to each other.

Today, 6 years later, I can say that I have broken bread with 3,600 clients. I have developed a relationship with them. I have given them my personal cell phone and encouraged them to call if they ever have a problem.

The bottom line is people want to do business with people they know and like.

This idea alone grew my business by 27% and it was during a recession! It became so difficult to win new clients, we won by going back to our regular clients, thanking them for the business, getting to know them better and having a regular presence in their lives.

Q: To patent or not to patent... Another age old tradition was one could only wear patent leather shoes in summer. Is this still true? A: Shoe rules have also changed dramatically in the last several years. Patent leather and fabric shoes (normally worn for evening events only) and boots have become daytime and year around favorites. Shoes boast floral patterns, plaids, tweeds, animal prints and mixed media. We are now wearing cutout gladiator boots in the summer and peep toe boots in the winter. You have the freedom to create your look, your way! Discussion Question: First Lady Michelle Obama has given women the freedom to wear sleeveless dresses and blouses for any occasion. Is it appropriate to show your arms when conducting business? My thoughts: Everyone’s business is different and one must make their decision. About 65% of people are visual learners, which means they are best at collecting information with their eyes. Because they are taking information in with their eyes, they may be more easily distracted. Covering your arms during a business discussion can be a way of lowering the risk of distracting those you conduct business with. So, You Want To Be A Government Contractor… By Eileen Isola, President

he email blasts and robo-calls are endless telling you that you’ll make MILLIONS by contracting with the federal government if you just sign up and pay for this course or that seminar.

And the truth is, many companies DO master the art and science of being a federal contractor and achieve great success. But the federal contracting world is no cash cow or lottery. There are few marketplaces that demand the level of technical knowledge, consistent engagement, and overhead costs like that of the federal contracting marketplace. If you’re ready to take the plunge, here are the pre-requisite “must do’s” before attempting to jump in.

1.

Find your nearest Procurement Technical Assistance Center, or PTAC. (www.dla.mil/SmallBusiness/Pages/ptac.aspx) PTACs are the resource for businesses pursuing and performing under government contracts. They are run by organizations such as universities and local chambers of commerce and funded by the federal government. The training and assistance provided by the PTACs is usually free of charge. If you don’t live near a PTAC, establish a relationship and work with them long distance.

Before you can even entertain the idea of going after federal work, getting your business administratively qualified to compete for a contract is the first order of business. There are a number of administrative things that must be done. This is the federal government, after all. None of these are particularly difficult, but they take time, attention to detail, and diligent record keeping. √ Get a DUNS number. This is a unique nine-digit identification number for each physical location of your business. Even if you only have one location, you must have a DUNS number. This is the prerequisite step to all other steps that follow. (fedgov.dnb.com/webform) √ Register in SAM. The System for Award Management is the U.S. Government’s official registry of all businesses seeking or doing business with the federal government. (www.sam.gov) Registering in SAM is laden with business technicalities and jargon that you’ll need to already know, or make decisions on before you’re able to complete your SAM registration. NAICS code(s), PSC code(s), and socio-economic status (if applicable) to name just a few. Again, all quite doable – but a new language that must be learned if you’re not already bilingual. √ Get a CAGE code. A Commercial and Government Entity code is a federal identification number for businesses that contract with the government. Getting assigned one should happen as part of your registering in SAM. Make sure you are assigned one.

Get educated on how the federal government puts out solicitations and how it makes awards. There are a great number of rules that dictate how a government procurement person spends federal money. Because that money is taxpayer dollars, all government purchases are governed by the Federal Acquisition Regulation, or FAR. The FAR is a “cousin” to the IRS tax code in both volume and complexity, but until you’re a big corporation executing large contracts, it can be boiled down to some fairly easy to understand award stratifications. Comprehension of these strata will focus where and how you target your efforts in developing relationships, marketing your products and services, and going after work. Becoming a successful federal contractor takes time, perseverance, and unforeseen and unplanned business costs. All can take a toll on you and your business, so don’t go it alone. Get help. Attend workshops, seminars, and webinars (there are plenty of free ones). Talk to fellow business people who have navigated the process. Find a mentor. Make a deliberate business plan for entering a new marketplace. And be confident that the well-honed principles and discipline that got you to where you are today are the same ones that are your foundation for federal contracting success.

#6. Submit Your A.P. Scores •

If you have AP scores to send go to the College Board and send them from there.

#5. Register for Orientation Programs •

It used to be that orientation wasn’t a big deal, but now colleges want to help integrate you into the college community with “pre-orientation programs” that offer an exciting and inspiring start to your first year. Your school might have BBQs, camping trips and so on. Take part in preorientation as you will make friends based on doing things together rather than by virtue of living in the same dorm.

Even the most independent college student can miss his parents. Focus on things other than yourself and keep busy with clubs, sports, events, even community service. You’re not the only freshman on campus who is homesick; make friends by being a friend. Thanksgiving break will seem like an eternity and homesickness tends to bloom about a month before. The good news is by the end of Christmas Break, you’ll be happy to go back to campus. By spring break, you’ll be dying to go back to school. Now, go have a great summer! You deserve it. Well Done!

#4. The Roommate(s) •

Speak with your roommate(s) about each other and include a range of topics to secure a happy living situation. For instance, is your roommate a night owl? If you dare, inquire as to their hygiene habits. How often laundry will be done and if there are any “fragrance issues,” like Febreeze type products. Who will bring/share things like entertainment equipment, a cube refrigerator, etc. You only need one.

#3. Parents Are Happy But Bummed, Too •

Your parents know their life is going to dramatically change. They want you to start to take care of things, but often feel the need to micromanage. A firm,“Mom, I’ve got this handled,” will help them as well as you. Do what you can to not argue. Cut them some slack and realize that through your excitement, they are sad to see you leaving home.

#2. You Can Start College Today •

Start learning to do your laundry now. It’s not all that difficult. After all, you got into college! If you have already received your class schedule and you have an 8 am class, start practicing getting up by yourself before you arrive on campus. It works better if you go to bed by 10 or 11 pm. Sleep is good (and there will always be another party).

Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association By Patricia Wirth

Business Women – Why you should care!

R

atification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 was the true genesis of women’s rights in our country! But do you know the names of these women? Eleanor Clift – author and political analyst, puts it succinctly… “They engineered the greatest expansion of democracy on a single day the world had ever seen, and yet suffrage faded from public memory almost as soon as it happened. The leaders built no monuments to themselves, and too many of their names have been lost to history.” It’s a rewarding undertaking to finally commemorate and tell the sweeping story of the thousands of women who fought tirelessly for 72 years not just to gain the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment, but as the moment when all American women secured full citizenship and entry into the Constitution! The “story” will emphasize the suffragists imprisoned at the Occoquan Workhouse for picketing the White House. When word leaked out about the deplorable conditions and violent treatment, it became a significant turning point in the struggle for suffrage. We envision this national memorial as the third stop on our region’s “Constitutional Trail;” beginning at Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington, we recognize Washington’s contribution as chair of the Constitutional Convention where he advocated for a democratic electoral process – no monarchs – and became our first elected President. Next stop is Gunston Hall, home of George Mason, author of the Bill of Rights. Last stop, the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial, which celebrates the American women’s full franchise into the Constitution! The garden-style memorial will be located within Occoquan Regional Park which was originally part of the prison property where the suffragists were incarcerated. The park is being redeveloped into a magnificent cultural center that has been funded by the sale of bonds by NOVA Parks. The Association must raise private funds for construction of the two-acre memorial, a cost of $7 million. NOVA Parks will maintain the memorial in perpetuity upon completion. Our target is to be operational for the centennial celebration of ratification of the 19th Amendment, August, 2020. Our mission to educate, inspire and empower visitors will far exceed the historical. Upon completion of the memorial, we will scrutinize the skills and characteristics these suffragist women successfully employed which will form the foundation of our ongoing programs to include topics such as leadership, public speaking, political candidacy, social responsibility, fiscal acumen, equal rights, etc. as they apply to the present and future. Our students will be diverse, from all socioeconomic quarters and hail from all parts of the country – just like the suffragists!

Cork Myth By Adam Kline

T

he myth we are looking into states that a bottle of wine with a screw cap has to be inferior to one stopped with a traditional cork. The truth? Unless you plan to age your bottle for decades, the only thing a cork guarantees is a one-in-twelve chance of your bottle being “corked.” It also guarantees a 100% chance you’ll need a cork screw on hand to open it easily. For me this is not a problem, since I wait tables, I always carry my wine key at all times. For the rest of the world, corked wines can become inconvenient. While many of us cherish the mystique of popping a wine cork, screw caps are becoming more commonplace in the wine industry. Half a century ago, screw caps were associated with cheap wine, but now they have replaced corks at many of the world’s best wineries and in their premium wines. Wine bottles can be sealed in primarily three ways: screw caps, synthetic corks or natural corks. Each have their advantages and disadvantages. All three, even more so, have their advocates and adversaries. While synthetic corks never took hold in the industry, screw caps are more frequently being studied for their quality and effectiveness. A bottle sealed with a cap, or even a synthetic stopper ensures your wine will not be contaminated with TCA, a musty by-product of the process many wineries use to keep things sterile. While drinking a bottle contaminated with TCA will not make you ill, it will offer a musty bouquet of wet cardboard, or just taste “off.” Wine presenting this unfortunate condition is said to be “corked” or have “cork taint.” Does this mean you should avoid all wines with a cork enclosure? Absolutely not. Many great wineries have not yet made the transition to screw cap enclosures for various reasons, the most common being they’re concerned their wine will be perceived as cheap. Tim Donahue—enology instructor at Walla Walla Community College, Enology and Viticulture— strongly disagrees with cork usage. “Winemakers will spend years on site selection, soil amendments, clonal selection, canopy design and spray

programs,” he says, adding, “They will monitor water stress, leaf pull, fruit thin, measure phenolic data… use a 100% sterile bottling line and bottles, and then, just for the hell of it, shove an old piece of tree bark in the neck of the bottle and hope everything works out.” The fact is, 92% of the time it does work out, and for the one-in-twelve chance it doesn’t, write it off as being “lucky” enough to finally know what a bad bottle smells like. Think about this financially. If 8% of wine stopped with natural corks goes bad, how much money is lost overall. On average, 31 billion bottles of wine are bought and sold every year worldwide. That’s right, billion with a B. Screw caps have a success rate around 99.99% for keeping wine untainted. I might be hard for the traditionalist, but I think this factor will eventually overtake the wine-making industry. The almighty dollar wins again. Are We Running Out Of Cork The truth is, there is not a cork shortage. It is a matter of costs. Since cork requires a lot of age and time, it is expensive to produce cork and results in a higher price point. The reason we see more aluminum twist off caps and plastic cork is simply because of cheaper costs. Plenty of cork has been harvested and trees are plentiful. The problem comes down to these new materials being chosen over cork, which has been a hard hit to the the cork industry. Farmers who have been in the business for generations are suddenly now beginning to struggle financially. From this, the belief of a cork shortage has created one. Cork has become an endangered material as the world’s wine suppliers turn to cheaper materials for their bottling needs.
