Obesity Is A Modern Scourge

m

Dr. Kenneth M. Brooks, FACC

ost of us are consuming too many processed foods, refined sugars, and starches such as grains, sweets, snack foods, etc . In order to regulate blood sugar, our pancreas secretes insulin to metabolize sugar (glucose). We don’t realize when carbohydrates are eaten, they are broken down into glucose, and whatever is not metabolized for energy is converted and stored as fat. When too many carbohydrates are consumed, the pancreas has to work too hard, resulting in insulin resistance. This leads to a drop in blood sugar which causes cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, beginning a vicious cycle of overeating, fat storage, and weight gain. The Healthy Weigh Now’s easy 3 Level Weight Loss Plan stops the cycle, promotes weight loss by using the fat your body has stored, and burns that fat for energy. Weekly meetings with our trained coaches guide you on the journey to a healthy weight. After weight loss, we are committed to providing you knowledge and guidance to maintain your weight loss for a life time. Obesity is a modern scourge that decreases the quality of our lives, shortens our time on this earth and makes us unhappy. Typical results will allow for a 3-5 lbs of weight loss per week. You will also learn how to monitor your weight loss and changes in your body’s fat and muscle composition. Hello Friends, Happy New Year! As I reflect, 2015 was a most exciting year, filled with growth and a strengthened community across Northern Virginia. New Year, New You:

n

5 Health Resolutions That Are Easy to Keep By Linda Coleman, MD

ew Year’s Eve brings to mind NYC’s Times Square, noisemakers and bubbly, but what a difference a day can make. The month of January signifies a fresh start, complete with a new perspective and for many, New Year’s resolutions. All right, for some it may have looked a little more like a hangoverfilled day spent on the couch. But were you one of the many people who made a New Year’s resolution this year? Resolutions can get a bad rap. They often aren’t specific enough, making them unrealistic and unattainable. But the notion of aspiring to be better is to be commended. Self-improvement shouldn’t be dismissed as “all or nothing.”You’re more likely to stick with your goals if you set gradual benchmarks. When it comes to establishing a healthy lifestyle, small changes can make a big difference. For example, if you want to lose weight, create a weekly weight loss goal, in addition to your final target number. Don’t give up even if there are weeks in which you don’t lose any weight. Establish ways to hold yourself accountable: Track and measure your progress with apps or create a journal outlining your goals and the steps you’re taking to achieve them.

These five resolutions are so easy to resolve to keep, they risk giving New Year’s resolutions a new reputation. An added plus: They also happen to be kidney-friendly.

1

2 Quit smoking (or never start). Many bars and restaurants across the country are smoke-free. It’s getting cold out, making it the perfect time

to save yourself the trip outside while bettering your health. In addition to causing lung diseases and cancer, smoking acts as an accelerator for any disease that you may have. Smoking reduces blood flow to the kidneys and can also interfere with medications used to treat high blood pressure, reducing their effectiveness. Quitting can be difficult, but it is one of the most important lifestyle changes that you can make. For additional resources and tips on how to quit, visit the National Kidney Foundation.

Each of us is given but one chance at life.

No retakes. No repeats. So this New Year, make a covenant - To Live, Laugh, Love. Live Well – The world is an interesting and beautiful place, so live well. Be good to yourself and others. Celebrate life and take the time to appreciate how great it is. Laugh Often - Laughter is a universal language that can cure the soul, so laugh often. Laughter humanizes us, allows us to make friends, and build memories. Love Greatly - Love is the most generous gift we are given, so love greatly. Love for others as well as yourself. In addition, she participates in several volunteer organizations that support the community and is an avid Buckeye Fan. Practice Philosophy – “My goal is to give the best medical care possible. Honest and open communication is paramount. There have been many advances in medical technology and treatment, however, the patient is always a person first. They all have the need and right to be treated with dignity, respect and compassion.” virginia

Avoid unnecessary painkillers. Pain medications provide pain relief (maybe you even relied on them to nurse your post-NYE hangover), but it’s important to balance the potential benefits with the risk of dangerous side effects, such as kidney damage, fluid retention, increased blood pressure, and digestive issues. Think twice before you reach into your medicine cabinet and check both prescription and over the counter (OTC) drug labels to evaluate the risks and benefits before taking a particular medication.

3 Sitsitting less and stand more. In case you missed it, recent research has linked for eight hours or more a day with developing kidney disease, as well as a host of other chronic conditions. This rings true even in otherwise physically-active people. Sitting for that length of time is typical for the average desk job, but most of us go way beyond that. We sit on the couch, while driving, while riding the bus, and during dinner, just to name a few! While sitting is mandatory for some activities, get creative and expand your comfort zone when it’s not. The human body was designed to be upright, but in modern society sometimes we need to help it out. Consider a standing desk and standing while talking on the phone.

4 Catch more Zzzs. Hit the sack earlier to make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night. Studies suggest that irregular sleep patterns, eating

5

before going to sleep and not getting enough sleep are all linked to obesity, while getting enough sleep is linked with maintaining a healthy weight. Sleep health is 50 percent habit and 50 percent fatigue. Obesity can cause kidney disease, because the kidneys have to work harder to filter out toxins and to meet the metabolic demands of the increased body mass index (BMI) in obese individuals. When it comes to a good night’s rest, most people require about seven hours. Cuddle up and snooze your way to a healthy weight. (Okay, I would be remiss if I didn’t also encourage you to incorporate healthy eating and exercise routines alongside better sleeping habits.)

Get organized. It’s helpful to make a checklist. Organize one “room” or aspect of your life at a time. When it comes to your health, tackle your medical records and lab documents. There are many apps that can help you keep track of all recent doctor’s visits, test results and immunizations. A trusty file cabinet will also do the trick. Don’t forget to clean out your medicine cabinet -- expired medications and ointments have a way of lingering around. Make a list of all the medications you’re taking, including vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Share it with primary care practitioners and specialists alike. Some medications are kidney-toxic. It’s important for your health care providers to determine if any medications and supplements could interact with one another in negative ways. Doses of drugs can change as you age or your kidney function declines.

ost people concentrate on their face when combating the aging process. What is often forgotten is that the hands reveal your age as quickly as your face. Although the appearance and texture of the skin on the back of the hands can be improved using lasers or peels there has been little to add back the volume that is lost as we get older.

About Peter Klainer, M.D., F.A.C.S. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Peter Klainer, founded Chrysalis Plastic Surgery, in Sterling, VA in 2000. He speaks both nationally and internationally about SmartLipo and was the first surgeon in the Virginia and Great Washington region to perform this procedure. It’s A Mood Thing!

w

By Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe

hy is it that people around us can tell when it’s “that time of the month?” Do we look different, smell different, act different or what? If we took a poll and asked people the answer to that question most would respond: SHE ACTS DIFFERENTLY. Ever wondered why that is or what is actually happening during this time? No, your body has not been taken over by “Body Snatchers” and invaded by an alien. Most women admit they don’t feel like their usual selves and feel as though they are someone else. They don’t like what they are feeling, but still can’t seem to stop the behavior or outbursts. Why is that? Let’s talk a little anatomy and physiology. Yeah, we had to learn it, but I’m going to give you the Cliff Notes. An average menstrual cycle is 21-30 days. Most fall in the average of 28 days with two phases: follicular and luteal. During the first or follicular part of the cycle, the follicle or egg starts to develop and the uterine lining grows anticipating implantation. The second phase or luteal phase is when the egg is released or ovulated. If the stars are in alignment, the egg and sperm meet and become one, traveling down the yellow brick road to the uterus where implantation occurs. 9 months later, you get a baby! Both of these phases are controlled by a combination of Estrogen, Progesterone or Testosterone. Most problems with bleeding, mood, irregular cycles, infertility, no cycles, can be traced back to problems with the levels of your hormones. However, we commonly associate our moods to that time of the month. So what’s really going on here?

you feel like you just got to have some chocolate or CARBS! Physical symptoms may also include joint or muscle pain, headache, weight gain due to fluid retention, acne and changes in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhea. Mood changes are common and no doubt is what puts folks on alert that your cycle is coming. The mood changes may be irritability, labile moods, sadness, anxiety, depression, anger or any combination of these. These changes are occurring in most instances during the luteal phase when the predominant hormone is progesterone. Hence why some women will get relief with the use of progesterone supplements during this time. Sadness, feeling down, overall dysphoria and even depressed moods can be related to hormones or low levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter released in the brain. Low levels of serotonin may be associated with dysphoria, sadness or depression, so we can use supplements such as St. John’s Wort and SSRI’s. SSRIs or selective serotonin uptake inhibitors are a class of meds which make serotonin last longer. Common medications in this class are Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro, Celexa, etc. A common one is Serafim or Prozac, dosed in smaller amounts than what is used for depression and has been very helpful with the control of mood swings and premenstrual emotions.

There is help. SSRIs, progesterone creams and even birth control pills can regulate the imbalance. St John’s Wort, Chasteberry and essential oils all may be helpful, and exercise is always beneficial. For those who become There is a condition we know as PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD totally debilitated by this time of the month, PMDD is the likely diagnosis or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Most women are familiar with PMS. and a combination of natural supplements, antidepressants, exercise and PMDD is a more serious form of PMS. Both are characterized by symptoms meditation may prove helpful. that usually occur 7 to 10 days before the start of the menstrual cycle and a few days when it starts. Women feel bloated, Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe have mood changes, breast tenderness, fatigue, Dr. Gloria Ivey-Crowe received her sleep changes such as insomnia and M.D. degree from Georgetown eating changes. Tech Talk

Is Your Device Your Vice?

Americans think they are able to easily balance their technology use with their regular activities, but when the numbers are crunched, perception doesn’t match up with reality. By Dorri C. Scott

O

ne in four Americans report they get stressed out when away from their email or phone for longer than 30 minutes, according to a survey conducted by GMI and commissioned by Crucial.com. Furthermore, 84% of the survey’s male respondents admitted to checking a mobile device while driving, in a movie theater, at a funeral or at a child’s play or recital. Reallllly?

Technology overuse is making many feel guilty about the amount of time they spend digitally connected. Life balance expert, Mary LoVerde, author of “Stop Screaming at the Microwave” and “I Used to Have a Handle on Life But it Broke,” provides the following tips on how you can reconnect with friends and family to help balance one’s use of technology.

Consider the Following: Pick Sleep Over Technology Personal Tech-Life Balance Policies 3 1 TEstablish ake a look at what you value. Set priorities and policies to help you stay connected to what is most important. For example, everyone values family time, but it is not always prioritized. You might make a family policy that limits technology at the dinner table, after 9 p.m. or while children are completing homework. Maybe you, your partner or caregiver can agree to shut off technology for an hour before bed to give attention to each other and the children. You no doubt value your safety and the safety of those around you. Make and enforce a strict policy around texting and driving. Make both unacceptable and practice it. Sticking to it will not be easy at first but over time it will become easier. Announce to others out loud what your policies are. Put it in writing. Consider placing it on the refrigerator or some other common area for all to see, review and adhere to. A clear and public declaration can lead to peer pressure, which can help ensure that you stay true to your promises.

2 Maximize The Efficiency Each Device Waiting for programs to load can be a frustrating time-waster. Make each device as user-friendly as possible. The speed and amount of memory installed helps determine how fast applications are able to operate. Upgrading your system’s memory, software and closing apps not being using are simple low-cost ways to help your technology help you.

Checking Instagram, e-mail or LinkedIn cannot compete with the benefit of a half hour more sleep each night. In many ways, your brain is a computer, too. At night your neurological PC repairs genes, secretes many regulatory hormones (including the one that makes you lose weight), conjures up the necessary dreams that keeps you sane and stores information learned throughout the day. Given the choice between technology and sleep, opt to get some more shuteye. The payoff is priceless!

4 Look Up, Discover and See Seriously! Every once in a while just look up and see what is going on in the real world. It is all around you. Make eye contact. Smile at someone. Breathe deeply. Pay attention to the world. There is magic out there that you are missing.

5 Stop Taking Yourself Sooo Seriously Getting clarity about your technology and needs thereof will help you take it less seriously – all of it! When we let go (of some) of the gadgets and technology, other ideas will come. The muddy waters will become clear and focusing on new and exciting people, places and things will occur. We have to believe that Chicken Little’s sky will not fall if we log off for an hour. If we miss a selfie, a posting, or a call, the planets will remain in orbit. And, if you are lucky, you might find yourself reconnecting, laughing out loud (more) and taking you less seriously – just because you unplugged the device.

Estate Planning, Part 2

i

By Dawn M. Dale, Esq.

n the November/December issue of the Virginia Woman Magazine (page 29) we reviewed the definition of estate planning and provided a list of the legal documents and action items included in a foundational estate plan. In this issue, we will provide a summary of each of the foundational documents.

The Durable Power of Attorney identifies the person(s) you have designated to handle personal and financial matters for you in the event you are unable to do so. Without this document, it may be necessary to have a court appointed guardian/conservator to handle your personal and financial affairs if you become temporarily or permanently incapacitated.

The Last Will and Testament takes effect at death. The primary purpose of the Will is to identify the individuals and/or organizations that will inherit your assets upon your death. It may also include provisions to:

An Advance Medical Directive is a common name used for the legal document that contains the provisions of both a Living Will and a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions.

Designate the person(s) responsible for administering your estate.

Designate the person(s) to serve as a Guardian for any minor children.

Establish trusts to receive and hold assets for your heirs.

The Living Will component directs your attending physicians regarding the use of life sustaining measures, which include artificial administration of food and water and the use of pain relieving medications, in the event you are diagnosed as terminally ill with no reasonable chance of recovery.

Provide for the minimization of income, estate, inheritance and other transfer taxes.

The Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions component identifies the person(s) you have designated to handle medical decisions for you in the event you are unable to do so. This is particularly important should you become incapacitated – either temporarily or permanently.

The Revocable Trust takes effect upon execution of the document. The primary purposes of the Trust are to provide for the administration of your assets during your lifetime and to provide for the disposition of your assets upon your death. It is often combined with a simplified form of a Last Will and Testament called a “Pour-Over Will” as a strategy to “avoid probate” and to achieve a level of privacy not available with a Will alone. The Trust may also include provisions to: • •

Designate the person(s) responsible for administering your trust while you are alive and after your death. Establish additional trusts to receive and hold assets for your heirs. These trusts offer the potential for financial oversight and mentoring as well as a higher level of asset/creditor protection for your heirs. A single trust can also provide benefits to a group of beneficiaries without the need and complications of joint ownership. Provide for the minimization of income, estate, inheritance and other transfer taxes and probate expenses.

HIPAA Authorizations identify the person(s) that you would like to have access to your medical information. Without this authorization, your family/ agents will not have access to information needed to make decisions on your behalf. HIPAA authorization language is commonly included in a POA, AMD and the Revocable Trust. The Durable Power of Attorney for Burial Arrangement identifies the person(s) that are authorized to make arrangements for the disposition of your remains and plan your funeral/burial. Powers of Attorney for Medical Decisions involving Minor Children are a form of POA that allow you to identify the person(s) to handle medical decisions for your minor children in the event you are unable to do so. If you would like to learn more about your estate planning options, we are here to help.

February is Heart Disease Month

Heart Smart Help For Her By Dorri C. Scott, MSW

M

any believe the leading cause of death among women is cancer. If that is what you think, you are NOT alone. Unfortunately, you are not correct. The leading cause of death among women is HEART DISEASE. Yes, heart disease. According to the American Heart Association heart disease is responsible for one in every three woman’s deaths per year. Worse yet, many still believe that heart disease is a man’s disease. It is NOT. In fact since 1984 women continue to die from heart disease at a growing and rapid rate. So, you ask…What should women do to prevent heart disease?

1. Take Responsibility. Women must take responsibility for her personal health and well being. Generally the care giver of her family, women are good at helping and encouraging others – family, friends but not diligent when it comes to her self. Every woman’s first defense and motto going forward must be TAKE CARE OF ME – FIRST. The best prevention against heart disease is to understand the risks and treatment options if heart disease and stroke history are apparent. Ask your health provider questions. Before visiting the doctor’s office be prepared. Take a pen and pencil with you. Ask questions - lots of them and write the answers down. Share your family’s history with your health provider. The information shared will become a part of the permanent health record. Especially share the information if heart disease and stroke are a part of your DNA. Your health history matters.

National Wear Red Day February 6, 2016 Celebrate National Wear Red Day with to help fight women’s #1 killer - Heart Disease 4. Keep the Pressure DOWN. Hypertension also known as high blood pressure is the “silent killer.” It often goes without symptoms. Checking with your Doctor or health provider is a must on a regular basis – especially if there is a family history of high blood pressure. Heredity and increasing age raises the risk. 5. The Number Counts - Monitor Cholesterol Abnormal or high blood lipids (fats) are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. Blood lipids include the LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL and triglycerides. The lower one’s LDL and the higher HDL, the better. If one is at risk, check with your Physician. Diet may or may not help. Medication may be the best prevention.

And…

2. Know YOUR Risks- At EVERY Age The older one is the greater the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Be diligent and focused. Recognize and honor your genetic make-up. If a family member has a history of cardiovascular disease, i.e. parents, siblings, grandparent - your risk is much greater. 3. DO NOT SMOKE, Not Now, Not EVER! The evidence is overwhelming. Cigarette smoking and second hand exposure to smoking increases the risks of heart disease, lung cancer and stroke.

            

Limit those calories Drink less caffeine Reduce Stress with A brisk walk daily Meditation Attend religious services Regular Exercise Laughter Adequate sleep Volunteer Avoid people and places who make you angry and / or anxious Quiet time daily Stay positive - Your HEART depends on it

Be informed about new medications, scientific breakthroughs and techniques to help with optimum health. Ultimately, stay positive- your heart depends on it!

“…never let it be forgotten that there was a Camelot, and that magic happened right here today.” Robyn first came to the WGB store with her children while they were living in a shelter. We helped Robyn select clothes for job interviews and a few outfits for her children, ages 2 and 13. Like all of WGB’s clients, Robyn paid nothing for these essentials. After Robyn found a job and an apartment, she called us again. She still needed clothes for her children, and after some prodding, admitted she needed suitable work clothes herself. Robyn relies on public transportation and couldn’t get to the store, so we brought the clothes to her apartment. What we saw there tore at our hearts. Robyn and her children had no beds to sleep in, no table for family meals. WGB mobilized its network of volunteers, and within a few days, a moving truck showed up at Robyn’s door. We filled the apartment with the collected donations. Those basic necessities turned empty rooms into a home for the family. Robyn’s sister was there to help and said to us “never let it be forgotten that there was a Camelot, and that magic happened right here today.”

Lessons Learned In 2015, New Beginnings In 2016

a

By Kristina Bouweiri

s one year closes and a new one begins, I like to take the time to look back and review lessons learned as well as create new goals for the new year. This year my goals are professional, personal and healthrelated.

Diego Campus for a week of detoxing and cleansing. The diet consisted of only raw organic food and a lot of wheat grass!

Last year was a very William Jacobsen, Kristina’s Dad difficult one because I lost my beloved mother. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January and passed in August. I visited her nearly every weekend, spending more time in North Carolina than in D.C. I will cherish that time forever. What did I learn? I learned that life is too short and you never know when you are going to lose someone in your life. I learned that it is never too late to create a stronger bond than ever before and show someone you love how much you care for them.

For the new year, professional goals remain pretty consistent: Grow revenue, grow profit and reduce expenses. We are looking to expand Kristina And Her Mom, Linda Jay in Baltimore and Prince George’s County. We continue to develop relationships with our affiliate partners all over the world and we look forward to collaborating. We continue to attract and retain the best talent in the industry. We are constantly looking at technology and looking for better ways to do things. Personally, my goals for the new year include visiting my father, who is 79, every two weeks. He lives on the Eastern Shore. Now that my mother has passed, I plan to spend more time with him. I hope to talk to him, listen to him and videotape him. I want to record our family history before it is too late.

Professionally, I was able to watch my team take care of business and let me spend time with my mother. Our biggest wins at Reston Limousine were taking over contracts where other companies were failing. Once again, our flexibility to start quickly and grow or retract for our clients In terms of health, I hope to continue on my journey of eating healthy, helped us win new business. Being adaptable is always a great strategy. working out and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. My six-month goal is to ride a bike for 20 miles! This Year,

Allergy Proof Your Home and Life

t

he best way to start year 2016 – Make it an allergy free year. It will decrease your exposure to the various allergens that set off your symptoms and may even decrease the allergy triggers that effect your health.

DUST MITES

These minute insects live in your bedding, the carpet, mattresses and furniture. To decrease their life span: • If possible replace carpet with hard wood floor where ever you can.

• Wash throw rugs regularly. It might be a good idea to wash them at the beginning of each changing season.

• Encase the mattress, box springs and pillows in allergen proof cover.

• Wash bedding weekly

• Cover windows with washable drapes or window shades.

• They are easier to keep clean and will also save you the dry cleaning expense.

• DECLUTTER, where you can. A home filled with knick-

knacks full of books and piles of papers is the perfect place for dust mites, mold and allergens. Purge the items that you do not need and recycle all old magazines and newspapers – if possible.

POLLEN

Weeds, trees and grass produce pollens. Many trigger allergies when inhaled through the air. Complete elimination of allergens is impossible as they are in the air we breathe. However, depending on where you live and the season does make a difference. For example, many suffer from seasonal allergies – spring and fall for instance. In the Northeast, the trees begin pollenating in late February. It goes on until June. To reduce pollen exposure try the following: • Keep windows closed at home and in the car. • Set air conditioner on “re-circulate”

• Check news and daily updates on pollen counts when possible before leaving your house. When pollen is high, govern yourself accordingly.

• After spending hours outside when pollen is high, take a shower to wash off allergens

• Avoid drying clothes on a line outdoors on a clothesline.

PETS

Before you fall in love with the idea of new family pet, take heed and BEWARE…you may be allergic. Animals produce dander, a protein that comes from the skin of animals. Dogs, cats, birds, mice, rabbits and gerbils may produce dander. Small animals with fur are known to produce the protein. While many claim to become more tolerant over time even after being exposed, it is wise to know up front. Making the investment and bringing home a new family pet should be a positive, allergy free experience, always!

Each Day Is An Invitation By Elaine Gibson

t seems like everyday I hear about something new I’d like to try or experience; a class, a recipe, a place to visit. And yet sometimes the options become too overwhelming and instead I stay stuck in my same old routines, missing out on the possibilities that could shift my perspective and open my world. How can we know what to choose? What if we don’t like it or we aren’t good at it? Here is my answer: “You never know until you try”

Invitation to Make Room There is only so much space each person has in their lives, both in their physical world and in their mental and emotional worlds. Often our lives become overly cluttered with material items and psychological stressors, making it difficult for something new to find its way in and help us grow. I have found there is a profound connection between de-cluttering my physical space and clearing out my mental space.

It is never too late to start again, to invite in your most vibrant self and realize who you are meant to be. I believe that each day is an invitation to move towards your best self. Simply ask, How vibrant and healthalicious do you want to be? Do you dream of being?

When I take initiative and do something as simple as cleaning out my closet and donating clothes I don’t wear anymore, suddenly my whole being feels lighter. I have more energy to focus on the things I truly care about. This simple process can be applied in so many areas of our daily lives.

Invitation to Seek Knowledge When I was diagnosed in 2008 with Stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I have to admit, I was afraid. I had beat this disease once before in 2002 and thought I was free of it. My oncologist told me conventional treatment was my only hope, but I heard a voice in my heart telling me there was another way. I chose to listen and became relentless in my desire to seek the knowledge that would save my life, the knowledge that I share with you now.

Right now I am focused on reorganizing my office to make space for creating another health and wellness program. Every time I rid myself of something I no longer need, almost simultaneously a new idea pops into my mind. This is the magic of making room. Whatever it is you feel inspired to clear out in your life, embrace the process and create space for a fresh perspective. I encourage you to accept the invitation to make room.

I was a woman with a mission to gain a new understanding of my body and health. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about the body’s ability to heal itself given the right tools. Here was my bottom line: The foundation of health all comes down to a well-functioning immune system and healthy cells. Everything else our bodies experience, stems from these basic building blocks. They are the roots of our well-being and must be treated with the upmost respect and care. Our bodies have an innate desire to heal and function at optimum capacity. We often get in the way by not giving them the attention they are crying out for. In a world riddled with ill health and toxins, it takes constant awareness and conscious effort to be healthy. Every day I ask myself, “How can I get more oxygen and alkalinity into my body and cells to make my systems function at their best?” By making this new knowledge the intention and basis of my day, I am setting myself up for success with each choice I make. While you may not be facing a serious health crisis like I was, I invite you to examine an area of your life where new material can make an impact. I encourage you to accept the invitation to seek knowledge. YUMMY RECIPE TO TRY!!! Chocolate Truffles Rolled in Coconut This is a terrific dessert to bring to someone’s party or hide for yourself. I always have some in my freezer! Equipment: Food processor Ingredients: 3 cups dry walnuts 2/3 cup raw cacao powder 1/4 tsp. sea salt 1/4 cup shredded coconut 1 Tbsp. vanilla Fresh mint to taste Directions: Combine everything in food processor, but do not overprocess! Use a tsp of mixture and roll into a ball. Roll in shredded coconut or cacao nibs. Serve or store in an airtight container. Elaine’s Tasty Tips: I like to add about ¼ cup of fruit puree, raspberry is my favorite but feel free to experiment. When not using fruit, I love Wild Orange essential oil.

Stand Out And Get In To The New Year

w

By Jen Dalton, MBA

ith the New Year, it is a great time to reflect, learn, and move forward intentionally, on purpose. As every year passes, I become more aware of time and how precious it is. The importance of using my unique skills to do something meaningful, led me back to graduate school in 2010. I launched my personal branding business, BrandMirror, after graduating from the Georgetown Executive MBA Program. I partner with executives to reflect on their purpose, assess their reputation, and increase their visibility and impact. Let’s face it, every time we speak, write, post online, or do anything, we are influencing how others see us.

We’re Seeking... Drivers

for magazine distribution and drop off To cover Northern VA counties including: Loudoun County, Arlington County Prince William County, Hampton Roads County Must have valid license • Must be 21 years old Part Time - Start Immediately

• Experienced Event Planner • Sales (Part-Time)

As you think about what is unique about you, what comes to mind? When others are around you, work with you, etc., what is their perception of you? Maybe you are an amazing doctor, or you inspire people, or you solve complex problems with data. Who knows that about you, and are you standing out in a way that can create new opportunities this year? Whether you are a parent, sibling, CEO, manager, writer, waitress, software developer, or chef – it is important to identify what is unique about you by asking yourself and others, what they think. Perception is reality, don’t let others define you. Looking ahead for the year, as you think of your reputation, think about what you want to keep doing, tweak, start doing, or stop doing. You are responsible for your reputation. What is one thing you want to do each month to move the needle on your visibility and impact? Maybe you want to write that first recommendation for a co-worker, or write your first blog on LinkedIn. Every person has something to contribute in whatever role you play: stay-at-home parent, first time job, working parent, new student, team member, team lead, manager, CEO. Purchase my new book January 19th on Amazon, it shares insights on how CEOs can build and leverage their personal reputation to drive business growth, while engaging employees, clients, and their community.

Everything Is Political... Including Your College Plan

o

By Luanne Lee, CCPRS, Your College Planning Coach ne of the more interesting (and overlooked) differences of the Obama vs. Romney presidential election of 2012 was related to income taxes... and Financial Aid:

• President Obama paid income taxes of 20% on income of $3 Million. • Mitt Romney paid much less, 14% on income of $21 Million.

Even though he out-earned President Obama 7-to-1, Romney paid a lower tax rate than his opponent. President Obama and many Americans were angry, saying Romney didn’t pay his “fair share.” But, instead of the anger, why did we not ask how that was possible? How did Mitt pay only 14% on his income while President Obama paid 20%? It’s a one word answer: “Specialist.” Romney had tax and legal experts to advise him on how to legally cut his taxes, ensuring his legal and accounting bills were in the hundreds of thousands. But that “expensive” advice saved him millions. Not so expensive when you consider his return on investment, is it? I am the Specialist in my field: College Financial Planning. My advice contains specialized knowledge that, if implemented, can save you thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. My clients typically see a return on their investment in the 5:1 range, meaning that if they invest $2,500-$5,000 they see a payoff (grants, scholarships) that multiplies their initial investment. For example, if you are a high net worth business owner, I may point out overlooked “tax scholarship” strategies that your CPA overlooked because they do not understand the interrelationship between the Dep’t of Ed financial aid rules and the IRS tax code. Or, if a family has saved money in the “wrong” places, and I show them why, how and where to shelter those funds, increasing eligibility by $10,000, $15,000, even $20,000, per year.

After helping your child pick the right career-major-school (in that precise order) they eliminate transfers and graduate in four years instead of the average five or six. Not only will your student flourish, but so will your wallet. Plus, through Financial Aid negotiations with colleges, it is possible to save half a year’s salary!

My Save k Pic and S D N n i A Bra OUS ollege TH h C ng! wit anni Pl

What I am saying is this: College is expensive. But NOT hiring a Specialist can be even more costly. I offer a 30 minute “Pick My Brain” College Readiness phone consultation for $75.00. Honestly, I used to offer this for free, but I found people equate free to a “sales pitch” or nothing of value. This 30-minute phone call can easily save you thousands in mistakes, which I think is a pretty good return on investment, don’t you? Who should jump on this offer? Any busy parent with children in eighth through eleventh grade who thinks: we make too much or too little, are we too early or too late, you have saved or you haven’t, or you may feel helpless and confused and you don’t know where to start... That’s exactly why we should chat! Call us to schedule your “Pick My Brain” College Check-up Call today! Your College Planning Coach, Luanne Lee 703.928.9036 P.S. We can talk about picking schools, choosing a major that will actually help your child succeed after college, scholarships, loans, grants and other financial aid, or personal finance questions… you name it, it’s your call. The clock is ticking!

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial By Patricia Depew Wirth

ou have the opportunity to become part of American history. How? By supporting the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association, which is on track to build a national, garden-style memorial by 2020 – the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment. It will commemorate the thousands of women who fought for 72 years to win the vote for all American women and, once-and-for-all, set the record straight by including the entire suffrage movement history not just the parts male authors decided to include in our school text books.

The best protection any woman can have... is courage.” - Elizabeth Cady Stanton A memorial is intended to capture a significant person or event in perpetuity. Did you know that only 8% of American monuments/memorials in the U.S. are dedicated to women? Let’s do something about that and build a memorial that will educate, inspire, and empower present and future generations to remain vigilant in the quest for equal rights.

“Struggle is a neverending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it every generation.” - Coretta Scott King, Civil Rights Leader

Help us identify vendors who will donate in-kind materials and labor to construct the memorial. Some of our national partners include the League of Women Voters, US, NAWBO and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

“I am prepared to sacrifice every so-called privilege I possess in order to have a few rights” - Inez Milholland (Suffragist, 1909) We can establish Giving Circles and you and your friends and family can have money allocated accordingly. A donation of a minimum of $1,000 will be included on our Donor Wall with your name or message. Make checks payable to TPSMA and mail to 5400 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039 or pay electronically through our website www.suffragistmemorial. org. You can establish reoccurring, electronic payments to spread out your donation. Contact me any time with your questions – pwirth@ suffragistmemorial.org or 703.201.3171.

How can you help? Please make a donation! Funds must be raised privately (once it is built, NOVA Parks will maintain the memorial). Introduce us to your friends and organizations with whom our project will resonate.

FOOTBALL? By Tina R. Johnson

uper Bowl Sunday is the second largest day for foodconsumption, behind only Thanksgiving. Don’t let this unofficial holiday take your focus away from the game. Sit down, make a game plan and stick to it! Just like there are four quarters in football, there are four things to focus on for the perfect Super Bowl party!

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2016

Guest List

Ensure your guest numbers equal the amount of space you have, so that everyone is comfortable and has fun! Be sure to include the time, physical address, what to bring (if anything) and RSVP method on your invitations. Did you know… • The average Super Bowl party consists of 17 people

Food

Super Bowl Sunday is about the all-American favorites. Chips and dips, pretzels and mixed nuts are great “munchies,” while nachos, wings and chili are standards. Try “Soup-er” Bowl Sunday (guests bring a pot of their favorite soup to share) and add a big salad, cheese platter and crusty bread for a filling meal. Purchase large trays of food, pre-made footlong subs without any of the work, or, set-up a hot dog station – the options are limitless! Keep the desserts simple: cupcakes and cookies are portable and hasslefree. Or, try a half-time ice cream bar and ask your guests to bring a favorite topping or ice cream to share. Did you know… • There are 8 MILLION pounds of guacamole consumed on Super Tina R. Johnson, President & CEO, JP Events & Consulting Tina R. Bowl Sunday. • 14,500 TONS of chips are consumed. • There is a reported 20% increase in the sale of antacids the day after the Super Bowl.

Beverages

Serve both regular and light beer or provide signature cocktails, like Margaritas, with or without alcohol (be sure to have plenty of alcohol free beverages on hand – someone has to drive home!). Regular, diet and caffeine free drinks should be offered, along with plenty of water… and don’t forget the ice! Wrap the evening up with a fun coffee station. Did you know… • On average, each guest will have 2 drinks the first hour and 1 drink each additional hour. • 7lbs of ice will be enough to keep 10 cans/bottles cold and count on approximately 20 pieces of ice per person for a 4 hour event. • 51.7 million cases of beer are sold the week of Super Bowl Sunday.

Decor

You don’t have to get fancy with the décor; the big game and commercials are the highlights of the party, so, you do not need to worry about entertaining your guests. Set up a second TV in the kitchen or another room besides your living room to allow guests to spread out. Or, you may have guests attending for the social aspects who may want a quieter place to chat. Just relax and join in on the fun! There are plenty of football themed items available at the dollar store, party stores or online party suppliers to use for generic décor until the teams are determined. Then you can purchase team mylar balloons and splurge on a few team related items! Consider purchasing some yellow flags and soft foam bricks for guests to toss when upset at the refs. Don’t forget pom-poms or those favorite team towels; whether as decorations or as party props, they add to the fun!
