Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone You have got to be thankful that we live in the Waikato when you see the devastation of the last few days down South . Our sympathies go out to any one caught up in the Earthquake. I do hope no collectable cars were damaged beyond repair also. As we look forward to Christmas with friends and Family our December programme looks like being a beauty with the likes of the Family Xmas Gymkhana, so write it up on the calendar and be there. Thank you to all who participated and help in the recent October Club Run. I hope that you all enjoyed it as much as Graeme, Julie, Heather and myself enjoyed the challenge of plotting a short Rally. We now have turned our attentions to the Double 50 next year at Queens Birthday Weekend. Talking of preparation for rallies there has been a very generous offer from some of the Club’s most experienced Rally practitioners to give help by giving “one to one” tuition on what it all means. So if you wish to take this up see the note further in the magazine. Well as the silly season is nearly upon us take care out there, look after each other.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter December is here already, where has the year gone! I am sure that the older you become the faster the months flick by, or maybe we have become so busy that time is just passing us by. Sometimes we need to slow down and smell the roses. By the time you read this the Swap Meet will be all over. My thanks go to all the members who gave so freely of their time on the Sunday to help with all various tasks. The old saying of “many hands make light work” really is true on Swap Meet Day. So thanks again folks for helping your Branch make some money to keep our coffers topped up. Another well attended Veteran Rally was held on the 5 th November, 19 entrants was a good show of support for our annual Veteran Rally. Well done to Leslie Webster for organising an enjoyable run. The feedback from the participants has been very positive. Our Christmas function on the 11 th December should be a lot of fun. Gymkhana, Games for Big and Little Kids, a visit from SANTA, followed by a BBQ Dinner, and all this for only $10 per person. This will all be held at the Club Rooms so come along and enjoy some fun and frivolity with your fellow Club Members. Our New Years Day outing will be a period “Posh Picnic”, to be held on the Cambridge Green. This will be a great opportunity to show off our cars and our finery to, not only club members but also to the public. This will be a fun and relaxing way to start the New Year and reminisce about our Christmas and New Years Eve Celebrations. Hugh McInally and Graeme Luxford are organising this event. So let’s all celebrate the start of 2017 in style. We have had quite a few members join our Branch lately; we hope you all enjoy your time with us. The best way to meet people is to become involved. Come along to Club Nights, Go on Club Runs, Help out at the Swap Meet, and become involved when helpers are needed at events. So if any of our members (new or old) are looking for a way to become involved have I got a deal for you. The 25 th National Motorcycle Rally is being held at Waitomo. Our Branch is doing the Marshalling Duties on Saturday 18 th February. Having taken on the job of Chief Marshal I need your help. We require 3 back up vehicles, capable of carrying 4 people and with a tow bar. Trailers will be supplied. Then we need 20 people to help with the day’s activities. This will be a great way to see over a 120 club eligible Motorcycles up close and personal. So come and spend a lovely day in Waitomo on Saturday 18th February. You will meet fellow club members from all over N.Z. all riding some amazing Motorcycles. Please contact me on 07 8880009 or by email gmpate@ihug.co.nz. Your Branch needs you. I hope like us you are looking forward to Christmas. It is a magical time to spend with family and friends. This year we are going to Auckland to spend it with our Daughter and family. Our son is going to Wanganui to race his sidecar at the Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day. I know that he will enjoy himself. Christmas is also a time to remember people who might be on their own, not everybody has family and friends to spend time together, so be kind and thoughtful to your neighbours and people who could be on their own. I wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Graham Pate 4

JOKE A bloke starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks. First is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. As he does this a huge fish jumps out and bites him. To show who is boss, he beats it to death with a spade. Realizing his employer won't be best pleased he disposes of the fish by feeding it to the lions, as lions will eat anything. Moving on to the second job of clearing out the Chimp house, he is attacked by the chimps that pelt him with coconuts. He swipes at two chimps with a spade killing them both. What can he do? Feed them to the lions, he says to himself, because lions eat anything... He hurls the corpses into the lion enclosure. He moves on to the last job which is to collect honey from the South American Bees. As soon as he starts he is attacked by the bees. He grabs the spade and smashes the bees to a pulp. By now he knows what to do and shovels them into the lions cage because lions eat anything. Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo.. He wanders up to another lion and says "What's the food like here?" The lions say: "Absolutely brilliant, today we had Fish and Chimps with Mushy Bees I KNOW, I KNOW............. BUT YOU'RE STILL GOING TO FORWARD IT ON, I CAN TELL

While watching a game of Rugby the other night on television, my Wife and I were discussing life and death. I told her, “Just so you know, dear I never want to get to the stage where I’m living in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and relying on fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens please pull the plug!” Promptly she got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all my beer. Some days, I hate being married to a smart Lady. 8

Joke

The Last Laugh A cocky Government Official stopped at a farm and talked to the old Farmer:” “I need to inspect your farm.” The old farmer said, “You better not go in the field.” The Official said in a “wise” tone, “I have the authority of the NZ Government with me. See this Card? I am allowed to go wherever I wish on the agricultural land.” So the farmer went about his farm chores. Later, the farmer heard loud screams and saw the MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries) man running for the fence, close behind was the farmer’s prize bull. The bull was madder than a nest full of hornet's, and the bull was gaining at every step. “Help,” the Official shouted to the farmer, “What should I do?” he screamed helplessly. The old farmer, hooking his thumbs in his overalls, called out: “Show him your card.” 11

Veteran Rally 2016 5th November

What a great day for veteran motoring. Lesley Webster and her helpers provided an excellent 66 mile tour on flat, sealed and quiet country roads between Morrinsville and Te Aroha. We had more than forty people touring, and good morning and afternoon teas and lunch. There was several questions to keep everyone alert and Monty (with his great grin) hovered in front of road signs to divert attention from the answer signs, and to give a home advantage. All this to no avail as two ties for prizes were the final outcome. For runner up the winners were Monty and Pauline Scarborough tied with Les Webster and Alyssa Robinson. For first place Kit and Rina Maxwell and Theo and Michelle de Leeuw were first place winners. A great day out –thank you Lesley Webster and helpers. Kit and Rina Maxwell. 12

Wednesday Wander December 21st Clubrooms at 10.30am. 11am Convoy to Resthaven Retirement Village. Vogel St. in Cambridge, where we will display our cars for about half an hour. Also we will be taking some of the residents for a ride around the block, so a good collection of 4 door cars is needed. A chance to spread some Christmas spirit to the elderly residents. Resthaven is a community owned, not-for-profit village in Cambridge. Well worth supporting, and a good chance to involve the Club. And talking of Christmas spirit, about 12 o'clock we'll repair to the 5 Stags in Leamington (behind the BP station on Shakespeare St.) for the Wednesday Wander Christmas Lunch. Last year was pretty good eh? 2017 Note time and place of meetings. January 18th. Meet up at HoraHora Domain, by the bridge at the middle of Lake Karapiro, at 12 noon for a picnic. Bring everything! Don't forget your chairs. February 15th. Meet at the Classic Car museum in Hamilton about 10am for coffee. Leave about 11am for a barbeque near Raglan. Food provided, but bring your own beer. More details later. Andy Hammond. (07) 8235712 atepushrods@gmail.com 13

Hershey Swapmeet The Hershey swapmeet is reported to be the world’s largest old car meet, and now has been running for over 60 years. Americans usually refer to their old cars as antiques with the age to qualify being 25 years compared to our 30. To suggest it’s massive is an understatement. There are 9000 stalls over 85 acres and to see them all, 23 miles to walk. There are 1000 car-corral spaces and the car show has 1500 vehicles on display. The stalls are referred to as the flea market section. The stalls are in 4 named areas. Each stall is numbered and identified on a plan saying what they are and or what they are selling. The range of items for sale is unbelievable: tin wear, complete bodies, part bodies, panels, floors, electrical and of course engines, gearbox, rear end assemblies and front axels with steering parts. The largest offerings seem to be relating to vehicles from the 20’s and 30’s, but there were many, many stalls with earlier and latter goodies. Prices seem a bit expensive but when needed to complete a project not “out of the way.” Most sellers were really well set up with purpose-made tents and awnings on the side of their RV’s. There is no way round the walking. A medical certificate is required to use a wheelchair whether motorized or not. The general organization is faultless. A large number of cars parked in the car corral were for sale. Prices seem ok but one would have to really want a particular one to justify the exchange rate, shipping and certifying costs. Both the Hershey and Carlisle meets have an auction as part of the meets. I was told of over 100 entrees, about half sell at about the prices asked for at the meet. The car show was so inclusive , a great collection of highwheelers, horseless carriages, brass-era cars, steamers through to the big yank tanks and on to the smallerbodied younger ones; not many motor bikes but a good cross-section of Commercial Vehicles – mainly buses and trucks. As well as the Hershey meet, Pennsylvania hosts one at Carlisle. It is held the weekend before Hershey so folk travelling interstate can attend the two meets. Not many stall holders I spoke to go on to Hershey so attending both is worthwhile. Unfortunately for us, the meet at Carlisle was almost washed out but we managed to talk to quite a few stallholders. They are always wanting to talk when it comes up one is from New Zealand. Westside Glory– the October Club run. Westside Glory was the name for the October club run ,which was a good omen as the weather was glorious, after the previous month while down south for us was rather wet. A good turnout of club members from relatively new, to others with 50year membership and vehicles to match vintage to P60. Organisers Graham and Graeme assisted with their wives sent us off on minute intervals on a mildly competitive run. The written instruction took us to Dinsdale then the straight line commenced, all roads exist, we liked the discretely positioned silent checks especially on the no exit roads. So far everything was falling into place, partially started newly constructed roads were marked with a no road sign to save any confusion. Naming the odd road on the straight line is also a plus for new and experienced rallyists. Thought we were doing quite well till near the end of the straight line when several entrants approached us from different streets but as they say have faith in what you think as others may be on a different set of instructions. Straight line finished written instruction took us out towards the Zoo and Rotokauri and on towards Whatawhata to the cemetery to identify a particular grave stone from a clue in our instructions. Thank you to the club member with the loud voice announcing I’ve found it saving us a bit of leg work . Written instruction from here via roads not used for same time took us back to our start at the Classsic Car Museum and lunch. The run covered written instruction ,straight line ,silent checks and a few questions. Well done organisers. Did hear positive comments from entrants saying this is the type of run we need and enjoyed. Maybe this type of club run could be held several times a year and do away with training run, as it was this type of event the we learnt to be rallyist . Team Jaguar.

Straight line Navigation After just having completed the PV rally, it made me realise just how many members dislike straight line navigation. In fact I remember that on one rally I was on a member pulled out of the rally and went home once they found out that the afternoon section contained some SL. The first rally we ever entered contained some SL so I just followed the car in front only to discover that they knew less about it than we did. SL navigation is easy once the penny drops and it becomes an interesting challenge. If you want to enjoy rallying then learn to do it. To this end, the committee have decided to give one on one tuition for those members who want to learn SL. We have members in Hamilton, Cambridge and Matamata who are willing to spend time with you so that you understand SL and begin to enjoy it . Just phone any committee member who will put you in touch with the appropriate person. Don’t be shy, put your hand up for help and start to enjoy the whole rally.
