FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN Hi Everyone, Firstly Seasons Greetings and have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Our family had a Wedding to celebrate the weekend after our run to Mt. Cook. All went well, though the weather was a bit iffy, but most importantly, we got Ken & Nicola married. It was a wonderful “bit of a do”.. On the motoring front, first off the rank was the Motorbike boys and possible girls. I saw them off and they had a great day for cruising. No doubt, there will be a report elsewhere in the Tricar. The next weekend was the Safari Weekend. I understand it was well supported and a good time was had by all. We have just taken part in the Saturday Cruise of the All American Weekend. Good company, good people, good food. We didn’t go to the Drive-in Movie as we were told you needed a FM radio, to get the sound. The Buick does not have a FM radio, in fact it has no radio. Halfway through the run, the Buick decided to run on 7 & 1/2 cylinders and we were pleased to get home. Manifold gasket gone, I think. Thanks to all the people involved in running these events. Coming up is our B.B.Q. Xmas Dinner. That will only happen if enough tickets are sold to make it worth while. And please remember Fairlie lunch & New Year’s Day Parade on the first of January. Have fun out there and I look forward to seeing you on the Veteran, Vintage & Commercial Rally. Best Xmas wishes,

John

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Notes from the Library by Barry Barnes During the last month some action has occurred in the Library principally sorting magazines donated by Robin Jenkins. There is now a very good range of Sports Car World and an increased range of Jaguar related magazines. Activity has been stifled somewhat by an unexpected brief visit to the cardiac unit in Christchurch where I was the grateful recipient of much TLC and a couple of stents! There were a couple of other donations which I will acknowledge next month. 2017 Haast Tour 4/10 February Entries currently total 43, which as it stands is a good response, but more are expected. Shannon and Norm have modified the Haast Rally Reunion spreadsheet for use with this event, the rally plaque has been finalised and various other tasks are under action many of which will start in earnest after entries close. Entry forms and all the relevant information can be found on the Branch website. Please note that if you are interested in this event entries close on 3 December. NO LATE ENTRIES!

The only other 1967 rider present, Alan Sutton, who rode Trevor’s Douglas, was M.C. for the Saturday night festivities and chief organizer thereof and the excellent Sunday morning breakfast. Our other 2 local reps Stewart and Lex were part of the successful team (Canterbury Honey Nuts) in the Inter Branch Competition. This was a special event for me and I think everyone of the 80 odd entrants enjoyed it too. 1913 BSA at start in Lumsden

50th Arrowtown Motorcycle Rally

By Barry Barnes Three South Canty Br members, Lex Westoby, Stewart Gutsell and myself took part in this recent event. I was one of 3 riders who took part in the first event in 1967 and we all rode again the same bikes we did back then. Wayne Nicoll rode his pedal start 1912 Triumph, a huge effort for a guy still recovering from major surgery. He has only missed one event in all these years. My brother Trevor from Upper Hutt dug out the 1927 Triumph he rode in 1967 as a 20 year old and got it going again after 40 years or so. He also brought along the 1930 Sunbeam Model 8, his vintage mount in more recent years that was also one of the original 12 bikes in 1967. This was ridden by a friend from Wellington. My ride was the 1913 BSA owned by my brother Robin which I borrowed off him in 1967. It too had not been going since the early 70s and Robin put in a huge amount of time getting it ready and bringing it down from Upper Hutt for me along with preparing and bringing his 1929 Sunbeam Model 9. Several of the original 12 were entered on the rally and others were brought along just to display at the celebratory dinner so that 10 of them were present. 1 bike not present, the 1924 AJS, was recently sold in Invercargill while the other was Trevor’s 1923 Douglas still in bits in his garage. The BSA was going very well easily passing a pair of veteran Royal Enfield vtwins pulling out of Lumsden, but only a few miles further there was a little pop and all drive ceased. I could see the valves still going up and down and my fears were confirmed when inspection proved that the top of the piston was sitting cheerfully going nowhere in the combustion chamber! This was very disappointing especially as Robin had the motor apart to check it out, had new rings fitted and done his best to ensure a trouble free ride. Trevor had a lot of work done on the oil pump on his Triumph, but somewhere along the line the sight glass disappeared and despite use of the hand pump, the bike nipped up going around Lake Wakatipu towards Frankton. We probably could have got it going but it was felt more prudent to stick it in the van. Wayne’s Triumph also seized so it was not a happy day for the 3 1967 bike/rider combinations. Both Sunbeams motored well so a 50% success rate for the Wellington Br contingent.

Motorbike Rally 04-11-16 by Lex Westoby Deciding which bike to ride may not be a problem for some people but because one of my bikes has been giving me problems on the previous few rallies, I was reluctant to use it this time. The weather was going to be the decider, and so with a fine but overcast day which didn’t look like rain, I decided to trust it one more time. I had checked it over and during the ride into the club rooms; I was listening for any faults that should crop up. I arrived with no trouble. Gathered ready for the start was a great variety of machines with most of the popular makes there. Triumph (2off), AJS, Ariel, BSA, Sunbeam, Honda, Suzuki, Royal Enfield (2off), and a Panther, there was even a Velocette there but he never went in the rally. In all there were 6 twins, 1 multi, and the rest were singles. It was good to see the out of town riders there, having come from Ashburton and Dunedin. The rally followed the normal format with a Time Trial to start, just to keep you under control!!! We then carried on to the lunch stop, with an afternoon run back to the club rooms for Tea and prize giving. My start time was 10-20 am and my average speed was to be 40 mph. We headed out over the Creek Bridge, and on to Beaconsfield road, and that is when I noticed that I had “NO” clutch. This was not a major issue, (as it was still driving,) until you want to stop. The end of the timed section at Shannon’s check point was the first time, but I managed to slip it into neutral and pull up. Getting started again was just a matter of pushing off and selecting 1st gear and riding off. The rally took us out via Brassels Bridge, up Lyalldale valley, through Holme station, over the Pareora George, on to Lindisfarne, then along some great (gravel) roads, to come out on the Cave - Albury highway. We then went back down to Cave for the lunch stop. Somewhere along the rally I passed 4 other bikes but I still don’t know where as I never saw them again . They finally turned up in Cave having done some extra miles. I ordered some lunch then pulled the bike apart to repair the clutch problem. It turned out to be the nut having come lose on the gearbox shaft, which allowed the whole clutch to float about on the shaft. After lunch we headed up over the Cleland’s Hill, and down to Blacksmiths Corner, and then on through to Pleasant Point, where once again I found that I had “NO” clutch. (I can’t have tightened it enough) so thank goodness it was an easy ride down the Point Highway, and through the back roads to the club rooms. Prize giving was the usual slick affair, and turned up a few surprises. Everyone really enjoyed the run. Thanks Neil for a great rally.

SAFARI 2016 - HANGING ROCK THURS/FRI/SAT by Barry Smith Thurs : Arrive at Don Campbell’s @ 9.30 to find Les Wenlock has also arrived. Coffee is served, that over, we pry Les out of his easy chair ( he has become quite comfortable) & off we go with Don leading in the Chev truck & Les bringing up the rear in his Daihatsu truck. We hit Pleasant Point highway via Morgan’s Rd/Cartwright’s Rd, & at Point turn off at garage. Follow winery signs. Just over the Opihi one lane bridge, turn right into camping/picnic area to find the Irving family all set up. Find also the river up and dirty. Weather threatening, no time for idleness or coffee – Just get to it & set up camp. Started raining. Once all ship shape, then finally coffee time. Shelter soon rigged with many helping hands – Still raining. A motor home came in but decided to park down near the bridge end. Darren Ladbrook arrived with vehicle recovery trailer (company truck), followed by Jo and kids, in her new pride and joy four wheel drive and soon their tents were up. – Raining. River rising. After tea & a couple of drinks around the fire, Jo decided to take the boys home (little ones – Darren stayed.) Fri: Arise to find that yes, still raining. Darren, Wayne & Terence set off Duvauchelle (Akaroa) with car trailer hitched to Jo’s pride & joy. Those remaining spent quiet day in camp. Mid afternoon the travellers returned with a 1928 Dodge sedan on trailer, all complete along with spare engine & block. Time for tea and a quiet drink around the fire (great piece of work thanks to Terence and Wayne: A brazier style built from a drum) Sat: Still raining : Steady, light, sometimes stopping, but never quite. Rearrange position of fire and shelter. Team ‘mechanics’ went to work on the Dodge under watchful eye of Darren, once bonnet was removed. Darren Rose & Wendy arrived to visit. After extensive checking by ‘team mechanics’ it was deemed safe to attempt a start up. This carried out with temporary ignition wiring and fuel fed by baked bean tin. Lo & behold it did start, albeit rough, then another cylinder cut in (then another). Still not good enough for the boys. Side covers are removed - A tap here and a tap there to knock that stuck valve back, a bit of lube, another tap. Sometime later, covers are on & the starting ‘team’ are on standby. Continued Page 15

This required three – One to apply battery leads, one on carb control and one pouring fuel. A nod from head ‘mechanic’ and she roared into life, all six cylinders this time. A tweak on the fuel mix & there she was running sweet as! Cough, splutter – Baked bean tin run dry, not to worry, smiles and high fives all around. But wait, what’s this – The retaining strops are released and the car rolls of the trailer (these boys are not finished yet!) You guessed it, another baked bean tin of fuel, start up with Darren at the wheel, Terence folded up on left side of engine, Wayne on right hand side & off they went up the Rd. Darren Rose with bemused look on his face, holding Jerry fuel can, muttering “how far will they get on a baked bean tin”?. Looking down the Rd, no sight of them, so a quick committee meeting of remaining campers – Let’s get a vehicle up the Rd with more fuel. Stick ‘jumped’ into action, fired up Chev truck & left camp for the mercy mission, to be met by team ‘mechanics’ pushing the Dodge towards camp, with Darren still at the wheel. Time for this car to return to the trailer. Frances Irving arrived out for a visit. Settled around fire, a few deserved drinks flowed, dispersed to prepare and eat dinner. Dishes done. Returned to fire to enjoy a few more drinks and stories. Still raining, Jo returned home with the boys. Sun morning: Overcast and threatening. With breakfast over, start dismantling camp. Surprise. Surprise, sun comes out. With us all but packed up and yours truly the last car to finish packing, to the amusement of Wayne and his boys, Stick and Les. One final photo of our vehicles and we set off in convoy for home. Ending yet another Safari (36?) Campers were: Irving family + Wiki and Henry the dog, Darren Ladbrook & Halayna, Don Campbell, Les Wenlock & Barry Smith. Vehicles were: 1927 Erskine, 1928 Chev truck, 1929 Model A roadster, 1930 Model A sedan, 1983 Daihatsu delta truck, 1928 Dodge on trailer. P.S. Great to see the Friday cruise led by Roger & Barbara, although was wet, a good turnout and a bit of excitement for the camp.
