Rumour

From the Editor This will be the last Rumour you get this year as I will not be printing a December issue. So to all my readers I would like to wish a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I would like to thank those who have provided me with information and articles I needed to produce the last six Rumours. If you have supplied me with articles that have not appeared there will be reasons. It is possible that photos etc were not of good enough quality to be reproduced or it may be that there could be copyright issues with using what is provided. I have to be much more careful with copyright than I used to be when I previously produced Rumour as it now goes to a much more widespread audience with copied emailed all over the world. In this edition you will find the entry form for the Southland Rally to be held in February as well as details on the December and January MidWeek Runs. Unfortunately I will not be able to make Southland Rally (away on the South Canterbury Haast Tour). I may be able to make the December Mid-Week run and will make the January Mid-Week Run.

Dave

From the Secretary National Office have a subscription payment in their account deposited on October 19 that has no details of who deposited it. If this could have been you contact National Office. National Office has had a slight hiccup with their bank. If you paid your national subs but have received a reminder there is no need to panic. However see note above if you deposited your payment on October 19. AWS Legal are looking for 10 to 12 cars to transport staff to their Christmas function (1920’s “Prohibition” theme) on December 3rd. Transport is needed from their office to the Bill Richardson Transport World. Each car will probably need to make two trips. Contact Brian Dunick (218 2434) if you can assist. Cover Photo: Wayne Nicoll’s 1912 Triumph on display at the October Club meeting. Also on display was Russell McIvor’s 1922 Triumph Ricardo. These two bikes took part in the original Arrowtown Rally in 1967. Closing date for next Rumour is January 15th Rumour

Chairman’s Report This year is almost gone and I am not too sure where it went. Since my last report the month has certainly flown by. First we had the Commercial Rally; which ended up at The Lignite Pit Café and Secret Garden on Ashers Road, run by a very helpful Barry and Maree. I was lucky enough to arrive in time to present the certificates to the winners. Congratulations to Allan Martin on winning the Rally, unfortunately I was unable to present Allan with his certificates and trophy as he was nowhere to be found, he had gone for a walk around the property with his grandson so I presented them to his lovely wife Faye. Talking to the members that attended the Rally they appeared to have had a great time. Thanks to Ray and Janet McCulloch for organising the Rally. I have been busy helping with the organising of the Arrowtown Rally which went very well with a lot of new faces saying that they had a great time and that they would be coming back next year. Congratulations to David Sycamore for winning the Rally. The weather gods were kind to us especially on the way home on the Sunday. I would like to report that the Rally was incident free but that may be stretching the truth a bit wouldn’t it Wayne and Tony. Thanks to Tony Warren and the Rally Committee for organising this event. Christmas is almost upon us, Fay and I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year and look forward to seeing you all in the next year. Life is an adventure try gravel roads.

Donald

Commercial Rally Great day, great rally. Very enjoyable right from word go. We met at the club rooms at 1 pm. A new idea welcomed by all of us. We had a bit of friendly chatter and were soon off at one minute intervals. We had our 9 year old grandson who was given the navigator's job. Very good job he made too. As Otatara is a lovely area we always like that small weave through Otatara then back on to Dunns Road. Missed no corners and were pleased all round. We thought for a while they were sending us home but no, while driving down Oteramika Road we were sent straight ahead and landed up driving a wee dance around Kennington then on down Gorge Road and to the Lignite Pit. It is a lovely area and after the field test we all had a small refreshment. Might have been a smoothie, iced coffee, tea or coffee or an icecream. Our Fintan had chicken nuggets and chips then peppermint tea. There was carrot cake and other goodies. There were 10 commercial vehicles and one golden labrador who was treated well as the owners of the property brought out water for him/her. It was a warm day and time for summer clothing. Everyone received paper sweets and yes we did the longest chain. Won by a gent. Wow! The time trial was won by Trevor and Norma Wilkey. Allan Martin won the field test and was 1st overall winner. Allan however had taken his grandson for a walk around the old lignite diggings and missed the presentation. Big thank you to Trevor and Norma who ran the field test and Janet and Ray who did a brilliant job of our rally run. Also a special thank you to Janet for all the time involved with certificates and calculations. While we are having a good time others keep working.

Faye Martin

Russell’s Ramblings At E Hayes, Neville showed me 25 framed photos he had obtained from the Tapper family, hanging on the wall near the coffee lounge. Amongst these there are two bikes campaigned by Tappers – a 1928 TT Triumph and a 7R AJS with Morrie Coutts on board. Mature members will remember seeing these when going to the parts department where member Jim Lawry was employed. I remember him giving me Triumph Ricardo parts. Many of the other photos have disappeared. Neil McMillan is assembling his father’s ABC motorcycle to display at his house. John Lyons has his ex-Jack Cockburn Douglas up and running. Bruce Berg is spoking wheels and has a purpose built jig to centralise these. My daughter’s DA Dodge Delux is getting tidied up with painting and parts chromed. Rob Ross of Ashburton has been a help with tips on restoration. I think there is a slogan “Ask the man who owns many”. I searched for running board rubber and sourced it locally at Total Conveyor Ltd in Liddel Street at a very reasonable price. Classic Racing Developments David Brown showed me through his busy workshop in Waikiwi where reproductions are made of Ford and Jaguar sports cars. Amongst the five cars being made are a 99% complete XKSS Jaguar going to New York, a 95% complete Ford GT 40 away to the UK. Also well under construction is a one off XGTT2 Ford GT 40 raced by Graham Hill in the 1966 Le Mans for a local customer. David has four local tradesmen working with him on all aspects of these cars except for upholstery and plating. He told me he has been supplying to Jaguar UK XKSS parts for nine cars they are producing. These were destroyed during the 1957 fire. I don’t think locals know of some of the quality industries in Invercargill, including this, boat building etc.

Russell.

Mid-Week Runs It is hard to believe that these runs have been going for 14 years. The late Arthur Kent had a wonderful idea when he started these runs in 2002, they have gone from strength to strength in the ensuing years and what a lot of good times we have had. From about 12 on the first run we now have numbers in the 60’s. It has just gone 2 years since Arthur passed away. I want to say thank you to everyone who has so willingly said yes to organising a run when I asked them. Thank you all it makes my job so much easier. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Louisa and Allan

Mid-Week Run – November 2nd

A warm calm morning greeted 19 cars and 44 people at the racecourse gates. The run travelled up Racecourse Rd and into Chelmsford St , which must surely have the most giveway and stop signs of any street in Invercargill! It continued out Bay and Ferry roads to Staunton Road where the tarseal ran out. It crossed the Oreti River on the West Plains Road bridge and travelled around the West Plains Taramoa area, coming out at Wrights Bush. Crossing a brief sealed section then gravel towards Otahuti. Back on seal through Waianiwa and Wallacetown, then back on gravel to Makarewa via Linds Bridge Road. The gravel roads were in really good condition, but the downside of a dry calm day meant large clouds of lingering dust. The run finished at the Makarewa Country Club where dusty throats were lubricated, followed by a roast meal. Entrants then departed to go home and clean their cars. Thanks to Jim and Margaret.

Mid-Week Run - December 7th

The December run will leave the racecourse gates at 10:30am. No gravel. $15.00 per person payable at the start. Entries by Sunday 4th December to Gerry and Margaret Pethick. Phone 2165496

Mid-Week Run – January 4th 2017

The January Run will depart from the racecourse gates at 10:30am. Bring your picnic lunch. Ending up at 130 Flora Road Malcolm & Noeline Shaw (03) 235 5438 Rumour

50th Arrowtown Motorcycle Rally

Over 80 entrants competed in this event on the 12th November. They left Lumsden at ½ minute intervals on a timed trial, then stopping at Athol for field tests organised by Arthur Warren on the rugby grounds. On to Lumsden for lunch, to Arrowtown and park the bikes. At 7:00pm in the Arrowtown Hall, our dinner and prize giving took place with Alan Sutton as M/C. Tony Warren spoke and presented a slide show of earlier Arrowtown Rallies. Barry Barnes spoke of the 12 entrants on the first run in 1967. Ten of the original bikes were on show in the hall. Patron Wayne Nicoll and Ashley Bell spoke of earlier rallies. Wayne Nicoll giving the history of his veteran Triumph and how he was chastised for paying £20 for it. We had an excellent meal with B.Y.O. for hospitality, because of the high cost to obtain a liquor licence. Tracey Brookland supplied a large birthday cake with pieces distributed to guests. On the run nobody fell off their bike or went into the lake. We had congestion at Frankton with a bridge under construction and a large amount of tourist traffic. We may have to look at another Central Otago venue until the road and bridge work is completed. Some members changed mounts. Ian Ridd rode his 1910 Triumph when his Thunderbird lost oil. Barry Barnes lost the top off the piston on his (Continued on page 12)

(Continued from page 10)

BSA. Tony Warren had magneto problems on the Ricardo Triumph. Wayne Nicoll’s Triumph gave trouble and he called it a day. Don Ward’s AJS broke a generator chain which was repaired at Kingston. On the way home Darryn Kidd lost the air in his front tyre (last year it was the rear) and Arthur Warren’s BSA lost clutch drive. Two weeks before the event, the Triumph belonging to Janine McLeod which Colin Bishop and Trevor Higgins were going to ride, blew up. The engine was inspected by Ray McCulloch and a new conrod was made which was finished by Invercargill Engineering. New valves were machined, a piston ground and a conrod pin made. The flywheels were set up and assembled. Trevor picked the motor up at 6pm on Thursday and had it running by 11:30 on Thursday night. It went to VTNZ on Friday for rego for the Saturday start at Lumsden. They had a trouble free run with only a little belt slip.
