I plan to introduce a new column about member’s current or recently completed restoration projects. To do this I need help in identifying members who are in the middle of a restoration. Please let me know of any vehicles being restored, not necessarily yours, and any information on the restoration, its progress and any parts which are needed. Contact the Editor with information please. The Tourer

Notes from the Chair Hello Everyone, What a month this has been! Since the last issue of the Tourer we have had a very successful Working Bee with 21 in attendance. Weeds were removed from the gardens and a mountain of sawdust was spread as mulch. Trees were trimmed, some painting was carried out, and the spouting was cleared. Two windows in the main room were removed for repair and these have now been repaired and replaced. A large amount of green waste was taken away. The committee feels that we need to stop dumping green waste on the property as the area that has been used previously as a dump is blocking run off from the property. A big thank you to everyone who came out and helped on the day and also thank you to some members who helped during the following week as well.

The carpark was well occupied. The committee has purchased a new stove for the members’ kitchen. This will be installed shortly. Last weekend we had a disaster at the clubrooms in that a blockage in the sewer pipe caused flooding inside the building. Some of the carpet in the members’ room has had to be lifted and thrown out and some of the vinyl is now lifting. A claim has been lodged with our insurance company. On Sunday 13 November the Manawatu Classic Motorcycle Club held a successful swap meet at the Clubrooms. The committee wants to encourage more of this sort of inter club use of the complex. Please keep in mind the Woodville and Feilding Christmas Parades. If you wish to enter please arrive at the time specified in the advertisements in this issue of the Tourer. Hester Guy Catering has withdrawn from managing the hireage of the clubrooms so the committee is looking for a replacement.

Our speaker for last month’s club night was unavailable at the last minute but Gary Millar came to the rescue with a very interesting video of the experiences of his son Sam’s NZ Army unit in Afghanistan. Sam won a Defence Meritorious Medal for his role in action in Afghanistan. Bryan Abraham continues to produce very interesting runs. Ian and I enjoyed the visit to Austin Mews on 13 November. Thank you again to Esmee Rowden for the magnificent job that she does in producing this magazine. Your efforts are greatly appreciated Esmee. I am looking forward to seeing a good turnout at our Christmas Party on the 17th of December at the clubrooms. This will be the Club Meeting for December. (Please see notice in Tourer) Len Haycock’s New Year’s Day Picnic is always enjoyable. Please consider joining us. Happy Christmas everyone Sarah Howell

The ABC of the Manawatu VCC G is for ………………..Graham Paige 612 Roadster Owned by Lesley and David Klue Written by Esmee Rowden

The 1929 Graham Paige Roadster. This story is about the last 45 years of a Graham Paige Roadster– with two owners. Owner #1 Keith and Barbara Staples In the early ‘70’s Keith Staples had about 40 motor bikes, the oldest being a 1917 Indian Powerplus. When his two boys outgrew his sidecar he needed an old car for the family. He especially wanted a convertible with twin side mounted tyres. Keith and Barbara lived at Aokoutere at this time. In Feilding he found 2 trailers of bits which he was assured were the requisite parts for a 1929 Graham Paige. He took them home, and being tired from the effort of loading and unloading the many parts he decided he needed a bath. While in the bath he reflected on the day’s work and told his wife “I don’t know what I’ve done!” Keith did most of the restoration himself, with the aim of having the car holding its own in modern traffic. The car has a straight six 3.1 litre L-head engine. To this day it has a comfortable cruising speed of 80km / hour. In the process of restoration he took the motor out at least twice, installed a high speed diff, changed the gear box, installed a hot cam, added modern shock absorbers, The Tourer

and did all the upholstery himself. Steve Raffles, a local engineer helped with some tasks. In the middle of this restoration the family moved to Glen Oroua where Keith had found a place with a 40ft shed, which he quickly closed in. Left: Keith Staples in Aokautere Drive before the new paint job. Below: Outside Ron Wood’s Paint Shop in Dahlia Street after painting. By the end of the ‘70’s the car was ready, and the first rally was in

Masterton. They paused in Eketahuna for a cup of tea (from their picnic basket of course), and then got back on the road towards Masterton. Keith was aware that a car was closely following them, which passed them then waved them down – all sorts of things went through their heads about what part was falling off…. The gentleman asked them if their car had come in bits from Feilding? He was one of the previous owners who had found it easier to disassemble the car than to re-assemble it. They competed in the rally and won their first cup. This was the first of many rallies (and many cups) enjoyed with ‘Graham.’ They participated in a number of Manawatu Branch rallies, and covered NZ from Cape Reinga to the Bluff over the years. Murray Martin recalls, and Barbara confirms, how obsessive Keith was about cleaning the dust off the car after any metal roads. Sadly Keith died in December 1994. Barbara and her younger son Vaughan took the car to a rally in Dunedin in the late ‘90’s. During one of the runs, they were passed by a Bentley. Vaughan regarded this as a challenge and put his foot down, and in fairly quick time he passed the Bentley. When they were all stopped for lunch the Bentley driver came over and asked “what the shit have you got under the bonnet”? The car not only had many motor cycles for company, but also a burgundy 1939 Packard. In the late 90’s Barbara called in the Auckland auction firm Peter Webb Galleries to market and auction all the motor bikes, 2 ½ tonnes of parts and the 1939 Packard. The Packard went to the Hawkes Bay. The family kept the 1929 Graham Paige. Barbara and new husband Robert took the Paige on a modest run to Kimbolton. Robert agrees he probably pushed the car a bit up the gradual climb, and it got a bit hot. After they had had their coffees, they discovered the car wouldn’t start (due to the overheating). So there was an ignominious start to their vintage motoring, having to get a tow start.

Owner #2 Lesley and David Klue In 2011, David, a Property Brokers man, was asked to help Barbara and Robert to sell their house. While he was visiting the house he noticed the 1929 Graham Paige and remarked how much he liked it. Barbara told him it was for sale, but initially David resisted the temptation. It sounds like it didn’t take too much persuasion for David to agree a price and become the new owner of the car. David and Lesley have enjoyed their

time with the Paige, attending Art Deco regularly, chauffeuring bridal couples (in the dickie seat), and going on the monthly Sunday morning breakfast runs. They also enjoy going to the drive-in movies at Manfeild. Their most serious incident in the Paige occurred when they were on their way to Napier, with friends in the dickie seat. Just before Dannevirke the rear left wheel shattered – the rim had disintegrated and the spokes went everywhere. The ladies decided to hitch a ride to Dannevirke for coffee while the blokes changed the wheel. BUT they had not realised that an errant spoke had caused a pin to fall out of the starter motor. In a typical good Samaritan story, a local farmer came by with a trailer, offered to help, winched the car onto his trailer, and took it to a mate who was able to fix the starter motor. They resumed the journey, only to have another tyre blow – many readers will relate to such a chain of events, I certainly can. Eventually they got to Dannevirke to pick up the ladies and continued to Napier. This journey took 9 hours – Dave admits to being tired and cranky by then (their friends kept their distance and uttered not a word)!

The Klues have done very little to the car. A CD player has been installed which unfortunately cannot be enjoyed while motoring because the CD jumps but it is no doubt enjoyed when pausing on the roadside fixing wheels. There is even a speaker in the dickie seat. This 1929 Graham Paige continues to have some rather posh stablemates – it shares the 4 car garage with a 1980 Fiat Spider and a 2008 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster. Editor’s note: Graham Paige Automobiles were built from 1928 to 1930, changing their name to Graham in 1930, and manufacturing cars until 1941.

Club Captain’s Corner 2017 RUAHINE RAMBLE Planning is well under way for the 2017 Ruahine Ramble which is on the 4th March. The entry form and further details will be in the February Tourer, but the Ramble will follow the format of this year’s Ruahine Ramble in that it will be non-competitive. It will be approximately a 65 mile run to Ormondville with the destination being Festival Day at the Ormondville Railway Station where Central Hawkes Bay VCC members have also been invited to attend. The organisers will be putting aside a designated parking area for VCC members to use. The Ormondville Rail Preservation Group is a dedicated group of Volunteers who over the past 25+ years have set about to restore/upkeep the Ormondville Railway Station buildings and grounds. It is a work in progress. The latest refurbishment is the Goods Shed, where the Group was successful in obtaining Funding from the Lotteries Commission to re-pile and restore the Shed to Earthquake Certification. The Railway Station building is refurbished for accommodation and is used extensively. More work is planned on this building. The Festival Day is to promote the Group and show people what has been done to the Goods Shed and Station. It is also a Fundraiser for the Group and they have the Pahiatua Railcar coming over and there will be rides available (at a cost) for people to travel the Kopua, Ormondville and Makotuku Viaducts. There will be stalls, food, tours of the Station and Goods Shed, entertainment, rides etc. It is planned to be a Fun Day so will be an opportunity to bring children / grandchildren along on the Ramble for a family day out. SUNDAY RUN TO FOXTON – 30 October 2016 The Simply Balmy Café at Foxton Beach was the destination for the October Sunday Run. Eight cars left Palmerston North in light drizzle; however as they worked their way closer toward the coast the weather improved - making the run out through Taikorea Road, Kellow Road, Downs Road, Wylie Road etc. a very pleasant one. A ninth car met up with the group at Foxton where Café staff had put an area aside for our use which enabled all 17 of us to sit together and enjoy afternoon tea and chatter. Outside, passers-by The Tourer

and locals seemed very intrigued with our cars. Thanks to all those who came on the run. Bryan and Catherine Abraham MID MONTH MEANDER TO MAEWA MEWS – 13 November 2016 Thirteen people met up at Maewa Mews to view the private collection of Austin vehicles that have been sourced over 40 years by founders Stewart and Colleen Dyke and is now maintained by owners Colin and Sue Brown. As well as the sixty plus vehicles Keith Hughes, Pat Henaghan and Rob Eason “planning restoration?” on display there is an amount of other motoring and Austin Memorabilia in the collection. Five cars left Palmerston North and travelled to Feilding via Rongotea Road, Green Road and the Awahuri Feilding Road where one other member joined the group, and a seventh car went direct to the Mews. The collection covers numerous Austin models which generally have been collected or ‘rescued’ to enable a slice of the past to be preserved - although only a very small number of the vehicles in the collection looked as though they might actually go.

Viewing old cars must be thirsty work because after about 90 minutes of looking around the collection many of the group headed into Feilding and re-convened at the ‘Coffee on the Square’ café (the old Robert Harris). Bryan and Catherine Abraham

John Callesen has recently installed a turn signal system from Electro-Tech Inc on his veteran Dodge which Bob Lederer of the US recommended to him. The maker states: “In the process of rewiring many classic cars, our customers have asked us to install turn signals to improve driving safety. Over the years, we have installed all of the available switches. All the other systems have drawbacks. This prompted us to develop our own system to meet the needs of our classic car customers.” John says that the big thing is you can program it to turn off automatically after a given adjustable time. A four page article is available by email from John or the Editor. Further information can be found at http://www.turnswitch.com/Turnsignal.htm Some of the features are: * Available with machined aluminium column switch, under dash toggle switch, or no included switch for you to use with your own style momentary switch. * Operates on all cars - 6 or 12 volts, Positive or Negative Ground. * Self Cancel feature uses time and lack of brake signal to know when to cancel. * Timeout user adjustable for 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds. Factory set for 15 seconds. Turn signal will not time out with the brakes applied. * Audible beep on turn - user selectable for On/Off. * Easy installation with included instructions, wiring diagrams and terminal labels on control. * Fail safes with brake and park lights still functional even with blown turn signal control fuse or no power to the control box. * Can operate with combined brake and turn lights or separate brake and turn lamps in rear of car. * Can share front Park or Fog lights for front turn signals. * 4-way hazard function. * Controller can use any style momentary switch to access all control functions. * Quick disconnect of control box for easy service. Simply unplug the 10 pin connector.
