Bruce Poole—Receiving his 60 Year Membership Badge and Certificate

Diane Quarrie presenting Bruce Poole with his 60 year Badge and Certificate

Bruce and Granddaughter

Bruce’s Chrysler was retrieved from a paddock under a hedge in Pongaroa CHB in 1964. Since then there has been many hours of very hard work, and many dollars. The Chrysler is now fully restored and looks amazing. A huge credit to you Bruce. Bruce presented a before and after framed photo with the history of his Chrysler to the manager of the Pongaroa Hotel to hang on the wall as another part of the Local History.

Rod McKenzie—Receiving his 50 Year Membership Badge and Certificate Rod joined the Vintage Car Club in Hawke’s Bay in March 1973 and has been a continuous member since then. Scarlett joined him when Rod transferred to the CHB Branch when it was formed. Rod was part of the team that set up the CHB branch and has held the roles of founder Chairman, Delegate and Club Captain. He has been a regular contributor to the Branch Newsletter “The Bleat” and the “Beaded Wheels” magazine. The first vehicle that he owned and restored was a 1930 Ford Model A Town Sedan and is still the proud owner. Others include a 1936 DX Vauxhall, 1926 Ford Model T Roadster Pick-up. This was followed by 4 Model T’s, Mk2 Escorts and a MGB Roadster. The stable currently being the original Model A, a 1913 Ford Model T Roadster and a 1987 Holden Commodore. Along with his addiction to owning Ford vehicles, he was also the founder of the “Model T Club of NZ” in 1992. He was President for 13 years, is currently the Registrar, a life member, and in 2003 was nominated for the “Walt Rosenthal Award” by the “Model T Club of America”. Rod has been involved with or organised numerous rallies—International, Veteran runs and club runs. Some of these include HB VCC Safari Rallies”, and “Pan Pacific Rally”. The “North Island Easter Rally” was the first rally he was involved with running when the CHB branch was formed. Rod is still a very active member of the CHB branch and a committee member. His experience is a valuable asset which he passes on to both the committee and members. He believes it is rather sad that young people of today, for whatever reasons are not able to purchase a 30 year or older car as he was able to do. The family fun that he and Scarlett have had, the friends they have made, and places they have been is inestimable. And he reckons on having lots more fun yet, sharing it with their grand-children before he shuffles off.

Hank Hurley—Receiving his 50 Year Membership Badge and Certificate Hank joined the Hawke’s Bay branch of the VCC on the 5th April 1968. He later moved to the King Country then Taranaki branches—later coming back to Hawke’s Bay. He transferred to the Central Hawkes Bay branch soon after they formed. His roles on the committee of the Hawke’s Bay branch were Chairman, Delegate and Magazine Editor. Because of the vehicle’s difficulty to drive, he became the main driver of the branch’s Rolls Royce car, and at one event chauffeured the Governor General and his wife. Vehicles he has owned are a 1939 Chevrolet truck, a 1926 Buick tourer, a Willy’s-Overland 6, a 1913 Marathon, various motorcycles, a 1947 Fordson Major tractor and a Ford Mk 1 Zephyr convertible. His current stable only consists of a 1929 Chevrolet XHLQ truck (“Louie”) which is well known to many VCC members as well as the public around the country. After he restored it, Mahoney’s Transport in Napier did the signwriting and painted it and in the company’s colours. This got used in many rallies and was even used as their “camper” when he and his wife Jocelyn travelled on holiday around New Zealand. It was often used for promotion as well as being the funeral vehicle for his former employer Frank Mahoney. As well as taking part in many rallies and runs, he has helped organise many events including assisting getting vintage cars involved in the Art Deco Weekend. Although poor heath now prevents him taking part in the club’s activities, he is still a current member and takes an interest in the club events.

The function was very well attended and held in Oruawharo Homestead which is a very beautiful venue. CHB is very fortunate to have such a venue. Congratulation to the following member for their huge contributions to the VCC of NZ and to the success of our Local Branch.      

We have had a few challenging years with many of our Rallies and Events having to be cancelled because of the sudden appearance of the pandemic and illness, a very confusing time for everyone. Then that disastrous Cyclone called Gabrielle. All I can say about that is, that certainly was a big wake up call to all management!! of our local councils. I hope 2024 will be a year of more certainty, so we can all move on safely with our lives and enjoy more great motoring. Joyce Calder—Bleat Editor.

Saturday 20th January 2024—CHB VCC Club Annual—Beach Run—organisers Paul and Judy Jensen This years Annual Beach run will be to Paul and Judy Jensen's property at Shoal Beach. Bring a picnic lunch, chairs, hats, sunblock and plenty of water. If you have a tennis racquet and balls, ladies bring your white skirts and men your shorts so we can put on a show, the likes of a Wimbledon match. A cricket bat or two wouldn't go a miss either. To get there, go to Waipawa and travel as if you are going to Pourerere Beach. Just before Pourerere is Gibralter Road. On the corner is a camp ground. Turn down Gilbralter and travel about 5km to the end. This is Shoal Beach Road. Paul and Judy's place is number 67, next to the tennis court (now you know why racquets are required). There is some parking by the courts, and some at number 67. Paul will be around to sort that out. So mark this day on your calendars so we can double or treble the population of Shoal Beach.

William Potts (May 1883—1947) was a Detroit police officer who is credited with inventing the modern, three-lens traffic light in Detroit in 1920. The two-lens, red and green traffic signal was invented in London in 1868 by John Peake Knight. William Potts was born in Bad Axe, Michigan. The 1900 census lists Potts as 17 years old and a police officer. By 1910, he was married to Grace (Baker) Potts, and they had 4 children. Potts became the 'superintendent, signal person for the city of Detroit. The old system of police directing traffic had become increasing outmoded, two-colour signals, with green and red lights, already existed, but they did not leave drivers sufficient time to stop at high speeds. Some municipalities experimented with leaving the green on for a few seconds after the red was illuminated, to caution the driver that the right of way was soon to change. In 1917, Potts devised a new system by inventing a 'yellow' or 'amber' light which would shine after the green light and before the red light to indicate the impending transition. In 1920, Potts designed the first four-way, three-color traffic signal tower, which was installed at the intersection of Woodward and Michigan Avenues in Detroit in October 1920.

Palmerston North Mayor and his council staff treated to classic car transport—written by Micheal Harding Dignitaries, (Palmerston North Mayor and his council staff) about to be transported to their meeting place for their zone 3 meeting. I had 4 people including The Mayor in my car. They were a very friendly bunch, and were keen to know all about the car, and Mt Vernon. As I arrived a bit early I was also able to give them information on Mt Vernon going back to the 1850s, as it is my ancestral home. They enjoyed the ride to Hunter park, their meeting place, and they were impressed with the performance of the Sunbeam, especially the acceleration from an intersection without sustained loss of traction.

Good Afternoon Rod Thank you so much to you and your Vintage Car friends for all that you did for Mayor Alex and the Zone Three members. The vintage was a highlight for many. The members said it was the best Zone Three Meeting they have attended in the last 15 years!

Thank you so much for your part in making this such a great event and Mayor Alex would like to donate from her Mayoral Fund for $500 to the CHB Vintage Car Club (may have the name wrong) in appreciation. I have attached an editable form for you to complete and return to me. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me. Kind Regards Mel CHB District Council 14

WEBER SPECIALTIES LTD Company Profile NZ’s finest & most experienced Carburettor Sales and team. Weber, Dellorto, SU, Solex, Stromberg & most other makes, serviced, restored and repaired. •

New carburettors supplied and fitted.

Worn carburettors serviced to new condition.

Restoration of carburettors to the highest concours standards.

Damaged carburettors repaired.

Obsolete & hard to find components manufactured.

Restoration Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our

cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration. All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

Weber Specialty 1/12 Anvil Road Silverdale Auckland 0932 Email: Weberspx@gmail.com Website: www.weberspecialties.co.nz I can very much recommend this company, Weber Specialty. After years of carburettor instability with my 1974 Triumph Spitfire twin carburettors, my son in-law took it into Weber specialty where the twin carburettors were over hauled and refitted. The difference is amazing, she starts easily now and is running very sweetly. Joyce Calder, Bleat Editor. 24
