The Politics of Dress - Why did it matter what the suffragists wore?

The politics of dress define the ways that people use clothing to affect how they are perceived and treated. Suffragists understood the importance of how they and their cause were viewed in mainstream society. Dress reform was closely connected to wider calls for social reform during the Edwardian period. This was most clearly visible in the "New Woman" who worked outside of the home, demanded the right to vote, and participated in outdoor activities such as golfing, tennis, cycling and motoring. Widely caricatured in newspapers and propaganda around 1890s and 1900s, the New Woman was denounced for adopting more masculine styles such as tailored suits and bloomers for cycling, not to mention her implied sexual freedom and the shocking masculine habit of smoking!

The white dresses and gowns worn by the suffragists were part of their political statement for the cause. In contrast to the smart shirtwaists (blouses) and black skirts, or formidable skirt-suit outfits, women protesters donned pure white accented by purple, green and white striped sashes. The full-length white dresses presented them as proper and 'pure' women, as opposed to the negative caricatures of masculine women in pants that many associated with the suffrage movement. The long frock adhered to modesty standards and the white represented a maternal and spiritual innocence of womanhood.

The suffragists took great pains to combat the idea that women were rebelling against their husbands and family life. It was important that the suffragists present themselves as modernthinking women which was borne-out in the wearing of the most up-to-date fashions of the era. They relied on the politics of dress to make the argument that women deserved the right to vote.

CHB Branch of the VCC—Chairman’s Report—April 2024

Welcome to Easter!!!!! The year is going too fast for some of us.

On a positive side, I will be having Back Surgery on the 9th April. The negative side an unregistered idiot ran into Janet’s car on the way to meet the surgeon, and Janet’s mother passed away the following Monday. So we have been missing from a lot of organised events.

We will be back to normal after Easter and surgery, whatever normal is?

A small number of events in March were enjoyed by those that attended. We need more numbers for these events to make it worthwhile for the organisers.

The Malcolm are looking for more numbers for the Rally on the 6th of April, a lot of effort goes into planning events like this.

The Torque Heads morning teas are going well with some new venues to go to.

Ken is organising another 10 pin bowling day, “A Fun Day”

I see The Waipukurau Club have another Car show coming up. All vehicles and bikes are welcome.

Looks like the “Rebel Round Up 2024” at Back Paddock Lakes was a “ROARING” success. Not sure how many from our club went.

New members have joined us, Peter and Viv Paton in a Landrover. Welcome to the club.

I will sign off now, as I’m sure the Easter Bunny is on the way.

Happy Easter and safe travels for those that are travelling over the Easter weekend

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—April—2024

It has been a busy time for CHB Branch members, who have joined in with other Branch organised events.

March 10th was the Ruahine Ramble. Five cars from our branch took part. This was the 60th running of the event and Bruce Poole was there as he was at the first running. The event took in a leisurely run through the Pohangina Valley, lunch in the Kimbolton Domain and dinner at the Manawatu Club rooms. The winners of the timed section were from Otago.

Prior to that, three branch cars took part in the Dannevirke to Masterton section of the North Island Club Captain's tour.

On March 13th Bruce organised a fund raising event for the branch at the Waipukurau Little Theatre to see the Drowning Girls.

On Saturday 16th March six cars went to the Tikokino Sheepdog Trials. Its amazing how this combination of man, sheep, and dog can hold ones attention. Those who attended all enjoyed the day despite the cold wind throughout the day. Some of those who went, retired to the local pub for lunch while some stayed on for the afternoon events.

Coming up we have the night rally on April 6th, organised by Neil and Pat Malcolm.

On May 2nd Ken has again organised a day at Ten Pin Bowling ,starting at 10 00am.

An event that has just come to light. Henk and Ella are putting on a run to celebrate the trees and the splendour of autumn at Woodward Hills in Waipawa This is a day to wander and picnic in the autumn hues. This will be on May 5th. There is a $10.00 entry fee which includes afternoon tea. Funds raised go the Hawkes Bay Helicopter Rescue Trust.

The answer to the brain teaser is that the sentence contained all letters of the alphabet.

This months teaser—What makes this number unique—8,549,176,320.

Saturday 16th March—Car Cub run to Smedley Station—by Ella

Seven club cars travelled in convoy out to Smedley Station on Makarora Road, Tikokino to watch some of the Tux dog trials. It was a very cold morning but we were prepared and brought lots of gear. The overnight rain had dampened the ground and made conditions through the paddocks slippery. The President drove Laurie in his 4x4 to see the courses, being wet and steep, only one track was suitable to get our cars through. So we all headed down a hill, through gates, and cattle, and through a small dip with water. From there it was up a steep hill, but everyone made it safely.

What a great morning we had watching the dog trials. The only real downer was the cold wind which swept across the course. It was a three day event and there were 30 entrants from around Hawkes Bay. Two ladies too, they really held their own. There were young dogs and more experienced dogs who all worked amazingly for their owners with commands by either whistle or voice. They had 15 minutes to complete each run with their dogs having to bring 3 sheep up a hill which was about a 400 metre course and then guide them through the gates, keeping them in the race and then into a pen.

One of New Zealand's top trialists Bob Bruce was a competitor. It was an absorbing day's viewing. We learnt a lot when talking to the people from the Smedley Dog Trial Club explaining all about the rules, how points are earned and penalties given. It was great to watch this event live as I have only seen it on TV before.

After lunch most of us ended up in the local watering hole in Tikokino.

Many thanks to Laurie and Gloria for organising this day. We are very pleased we went.

North Island Club Captain’s Tour—March 2024—by

Rod McKenzie

We decided some weeks ago that we would like to join the NICC Tour for a time towing our caravan behind our 1988 Holden Commodore VL 3 litre. However, we had a problem. The car had suffered a major boil-up prior to Christmas and it was in “hospital” at Gary and Kaye’s garage in Waipukurau. It had cracked the head and had other issues too. Gary had it for about ten weeks and three heads were checked before he got one that was okay. We got it back about 7 days before we were due to join the tour and checked it out before we left taking it across to Rongotea to deliver back a heap of Holden parts including a dud head. It went really well, and we were very pleased to report back that it was running as it should.

We joined the tour in Dannevirke with our caravan in tow staying at Merv and Sandra McCullough’s place beside their big shed which is set up for caravan guests, and joined the group for dinner at the Services and Citizens Club. The others had already been on the road for several days starting in Whanganui and travelling to such places as Ohakune and the Waiouru Military Museum. They travelled through to Napier via the Taihape road before passing through CHB on their way to Dannevirke.

The first day started slowly as we stayed in Dannevirke for the morning to join with the “Torque-head” bunch for coffee and scones, after which we headed for Pahiatua for lunch. Also joining the tour for the day were Merv and Sandra in another Holden, and Laurie and Gloria in their modern. They arrived in Pahiatua for a picnic lunch having travelled out to Waihi Falls and Pongaroa. We had stuck to SH2. After lunch we joined the tour proper heading out to Alfredton and onto H/W52 to travel south to Masterton where we secured accommodation for us and the caravan at the Showgrounds. A good place to stay and not too expensive for the two nights we planned on being there. After a good meal at the Masterton Club and a good sleep we joined with everyone and headed for Cape Palliser with stops at Martinborough for morning coffee and a look at the dead and dying bull-dozers at Ngawi. They are used for launching and retrieving the fishing boats. Some climbed up the 253 steps to the lighthouse whilst others checked out the playful seals. Back around the coast road which has been substantially damaged by the sea over the last few months and on to Lake Ferry for chips and a drink at their iconic pub. We returned to Masterton along lovely bush lined roads to the west of Lake Wairarapa.

North Island Club Captain’s Tour—March 2024—by Rod McKenzie

The next day saw the group visiting the “Pointon Museum” east of Masterton where there are numerous vintage cars, petrolnalia and old fashioned women’s dresses. Sadly, Gaye Pointon died a few months ago but her dress collection is still there to be admired, Francis has recently added another Ford Model T with Wairarapa connections to his collection. Also visiting Pointon’s was a group of early Ford V8’s, mostly from the 1934-5 era with plenty of noise, but nevertheless some lovely cars with superb work having been put into them.

From there we travelled out to Castlepoint and many of us made it up to the viewing platform adjacent to the lighthouse. Wonderful views up and down the coast during such a fine day and almost no wind, a blessing as it can fair blow out there! We travelled back to Masterton from Castlepoint to retrieve our caravan and headed north to Pahiatua, whilst the rest of the group went cross country through Castle Hill Rd to Alfredton and exited onto SH2 near Ekatahuna. Everyone travelled then to Palmerston North along the Pahiatua Track which was in good order. The Holden travelled well and didn’t get as hot as I expected it might going over the “Track”, so all was good.

That night we were free to do whatever we liked, and we camped up at the Manawatu VCC rooms near Kelvin Grove after getting some food for the next day, and a couple of packs of KFC for the night’s dinner. The next morning about 60 vehicles arrived and we set off on the “Ruahine Ramble”, the 60th time this event has been held by the branch, with our Bruce Poole being one who has also done the first one and many more in-between too. We motored up the Pohangana valley to Rangiwahia and back to Kimbolton where we all had our picnic lunches in the shade of the trees at the domain there. Following the run there was time for some social mixing before dinner after which we retired to bed in the caravan. There were several CHB entries for the “Ruahine Ramble” including the Malcolmson’s returning this time with their 1965 Vauxhall Velox, Lynn and Sandra Cross with their Triumph Herald, Bruce Poole with his 1930 Chrysler 77 Roadster, John Foot in his 1990 Ford Falcon, and us in the Holden. We had a good few days away.

A big “Thank you” to Glyn and Cathy Clements for organising both events.

Triumph TR—National Rally

On Monday 26th February 2,TR2s and one TR6 and 6 of us set off from Hastings. The weather was good so we headed south over the Pahiatua track, keen to travel over Transition Gully, amazing piece of engineering, hope it holds together for a while? Arriving in Wellington with plenty of time to board the Ferry at 1.30pm only to hear, one of the Ferries had broken down and our sailing was an hour and a half late leaving. Was great meeting up and chatting with lots of other vintage and classic car people heading South after attending various rallies in the North Island. Was a late and dark arrival in Kaikoura missing our Fish and chips on the beach. Next morning weather fine, we headed inland to Methven stopping at many places of interest along the way, nice accommodation with breakfast included. Next day heading inland to Geraldine, lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki Twizel and arriving in Omarama for the night, great roads with lots to see and thankfully cars all running well. Next day it was off over the Lindis pass and on to the see the man made Lake Dunstan on our way to Alexandra.

Dart throwing Kay

Gary threw 3 bulls eyes

There we were met by 79 registered Triumph TRs ready for the three day car event. The Rally was a great success with lots of new friends made and a few cars changing hands. The first day was taken up with the cars all displayed at the local park for public viewing and judging, followed by an Hawaiian themed BBQ. Day 2 was rally day and a prizegiving dinner. Day 3 was breakfast and meeting at a very nice winery. We left to travel over the Haast pass to Haast for a night, very heavy rain over night but luckily it was partly fine by the next day for our travel up to Hokitika. On our way we visited the Fox Classier area but drizzle stopped us from walking the track. We stayed a night in Hokitika and visited the Hokitika gorge, great short walk There was a light coating of snow on the hills by the next morning. Over the Arthurs Pass with a dusting of snow to Christchurch. Two days in Christchurch with relatives, then homeward bound up the east coast and across Cook straight. On time this trip. We arrived home having travelled 3,100 km and no break downs. Woo Hoo.

J. Frank Duryea—First to manufacture gasoline powered vehicles

On February 15, 1967, J. Frank Duryea, founder with his brother Charles of the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1895. The Duryeas were the first to manufacture and sell a gasoline-powered vehicle in the United States, producing 13 in 1896. The brothers were born in Illinois, Charles in Canton, Illinois, in 1861 and Frank in Washburn, Illinois, in 1869. Both graduated from high school. Charles moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the bicycle business. Frank followed closely on his heels in 1888. Two more moves in as many years brought the Duryea brothers to Springfield, Massachusetts. Charles had already earned a reputation for unusual design elements in his "sylph" bicycle, with a smaller wheel in front and a steering lever on the sides of the seat. Frank worked ten hours a day to make Charles's design a reality. Over the course of four road tests, Frank changed those designs in significant ways. By trial-and-error, Frank worked out problems of ignition, carburetion, and transmission. He devised a method of muffling the engine's extreme noise with a wooden box. In January 1894 Frank made what he believed was his first successful road test. Frank Duryea died in Saybrook, Connecticut, on February 15, 1967, aged 97. He was the last surviving member of the automotive industry's founding fathers.

Executive Meeting Summary—MARCH 2024

I wish to report that we had a very successful Executive meeting in Christchurch over the weekend of 16/17 March. The meeting was attended by 29 of our 36 branches and many observers were present. The written reports from the various management roles were received with a few additions added along the way before we moved on to General Business. Gareth Wishart, MD of Innovation for the HW Richardson Group gave a very interesting presentation on steps they are taking to transition their truck fleet across to a Hybrid diesel/ Hydrogen fuel system. The impact on emissions for this country are significant and they are making a huge investment personally to achieve this. One truck converted removes carbon emissions equal to that which 17 electric vehicles do when replacing petrol/diesel cars. This is where the government should be placing its efforts rather than targeting just petrol personal vehicles. We can see that when it comes to fuel emissions there is more than one way to achieve the goal.

As well as locking in 25 August this year for our National Daffodil Day, Kaaren Smylie reiterated the importance of all branches having the event on the same day so that we all convey the same message throughout the country. A new national poster is also being produced. The main focus should be about creating exposure for our club. We were also brought up to date on changes to the Club Procedures Manual (CPM), previously the Branch Manual then renamed the Club Manual. Diane Quarrie gave a presentation on the new format and how it will work with an index that will allow a simple click of the mouse to take you to the relevant section required. Past President Diane has been focussed on this mammoth task over the last six months and her efforts will make life easier for those who access the CPM from time to time. Our expectation is that this will be loaded on to the website over April. The main topic that was discussed and workshopped over the two days was changes to our constitution. Wellington Branch had requested that we take time to understand what the issues with our current constitution were and Alan Thompson, Wellington’s delegate, used a power point presentation to deliver a very well put together discussion paper. Their motion to allow for more discussion around this was passed which then opened the floor for each branch to raise concerns. A summary of the issues raised at last year’s meeting was read as part of this. The end result was an overwhelming majority voting to change away from our current 46-member committee being responsible for the governance of the club. A vote was then held to determine the makeup of a new 12member National Committee using results of workshopped questions from the previous year. As the new structure will have six new Regional Representative positions on the committee, each representing a group of branches, we went on to determine suitable boundaries for those representatives covering the branches. Each Island was discussed individually to create boundaries that were considered best for the branches, and also taking into consideration that a new Representative needed to be able get around the branches as required. We then broke up into groups of six to further discuss and answer questions, focussing on the finer points and what was important for each branch. These findings were recorded and will be considered in creating the new document.

-TIME—THE DAY WAS MUCH COOLER—AND WE DIDN'T NEED THE SHADE

We also welcomed Garry Jackson, President of The Federation of Motoring Clubs, to bring us up to date on the final wrap up on the survey completed last year. He also advised that now that the final results from the survey are in, lobbying within government circles has commenced. The total dollar spend from the recreational vehicle sector has now come up to $16 billion annually so it is expected that FOMC should get a good hearing. It was a busy two days, and with the dinner on Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday morning being catered at the Canterbury Branch premises, the conference type meeting over the weekend allowed for plenty of catching up between delegates and members.
