CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It’s that time of year when you need to start thinking about how YOU could help with the running of OUR club. Are you happy with the way our club is being run?

The AGM is in May and nomination for club office bearers will be open soon. It’s always better to have a choice by voting for positions than people saying I will do the role because nobody else will. It would be good to have somebody on the executive committee that could step up and cover the Secretary and Treasurer positions when they are not there. They could also help with running the timing system for rallies and take some of the load off the committee. There are lots of other roles that need to be filled, from helping with rallies, running the bar and keeping the grounds tidy. These things don’t just happen, people MAKE them happen. For our club to run well we all need to help.

Veteran and Vintage Rally - Thanks to all who attended and helped on the day. The weather was kind and timing gear worked well.

I attended the National Executive meeting on 16 and 17 March in Christchurch. The main objective of the Executive meeting was to get a draft plan for the new constitution that would conform with the Incorporated Societies Act. The plan is to break New Zealand into 6 regions with 1 rep for each of the 6 regions to form the management committee plus the chairman, secretary ,etc. The AGM will still be attended by ALL the branch delegates (which we are hosting in 2025).These changes need to be ratified by 85% of the club membership that VOTES.

Editorial

During the Race4Life event motorcycles were allowed out for a few laps at Teretonga. I have been spectating at the track for some years and thought I knew the layout, however the first lap convinced me I had a lot to learn. Going anti-clockwise round the circuit means most of the turns were left handers, a bit of a struggle with a motorcycle and sidecar and no passenger. The long sweeping bend at the end of the main straight (the Loop) is particularly challenging on an outfit. The other bend that surprised me was the turn onto the main straight (GWD Elbow). It is a very sharp left hander and catches a lot of people out, I needed far more room than I thought.

My run came to an early end, half way up the main straight doing about 80mph there was a bang on my crash helmet followed by a fluttering, I thought I had hit a bird. Slowing down to pull off, my name tag and lanyard stopped flying about and self destructing! Looking forward to my next opportunity for few laps preferably on a solo.

Veteran and Vintage Combined Rally March 2024

The inaugural combined Veteran and Vintage Combined Rally attracted 18 cars (9 Veterans) and one motorcycle Ray McCulloch’s 1911 Abingdon King Dick . There were 5 entries from Gore.

Morning tea started everyone off on the right foot and the weather showing its potential with no clouds anywhere to be seen. This summer has been challenging for this seasons scheduled runs but no matter which shoulder I looked over there was just blue sky almost unheard of not even a whiff of a breeze forecast.

The 1907 Club Darracq* had anther outing having recently had been driven in the charity event Drive-A- Dream. A good run around the Southland roads to Branxholme turning east with a good mix of hills and turns. Geoff Timpany in the 1927 Chrysler taking out the Hard Luck Trophy from this stretch of road. The cars finished off the run at Andersons Park all assembling to be escorted across the road to Donovan Park to a designated park at the Invercargill A&P Show for the cars to be available for public viewing. The hot weather certainly assisted the numbers for the public attending the show and although there wasn’t a great number of people viewing the cars the conversations were varied and certainly interesting.

Prize giving was held followed by dinner prepared by Margaret Pethick and crew. The combined rally worked well with good numbers attending both the rally and meal.

*The restoration of the Darracq is a great story celebrating the clever people who have worked on it in the past and the clever volunteers who keep it on the road today. The history of the restoration can be found on the Southland Branch website. (From: Half A Century Of Vintage Motoring by N A McMillan)

We look forward to meeting you at club nights or at club events.

Race4Life - Teretonga

The Ride4Life event takes palliative care patients out for rides in racing cars, classic cars, helicopters, fire engines, trucks and motorcycles, along similar lines to Drive a Dream. In the morning guests were offered hot laps in racing cars around Teretonga circuit and drives out in the local roads in classic/vintage vehicles. The quests were treated to an excellent lunch served by local school children. In the afternoon classic/vintage vehicles took guests and careers for laps around the track. I was lucky enough to take out 3 patients, in the BMW and sidecar, on runs around Otatara. Other section members took part in the event and one of the patients was a member. Volunteers and carers were well looked after, with free food and coffee all day.
