CHAIRMANS CHAT

It would seem just as we're all becoming accustomed to settled weather - the Rain Gods have stepped in and we've had to postpone our End of Month Run. Hopefully the planned visit to the Meredith property with the Morris Minor people and the Tauranga Mini Owners Club will take place next month. Don't forget to consult Klaxon and watch out for Buzzes concerning the rescheduling of dates.

Things have been particularly busy behind the scenes for the committee. As well as gearing up for the 2024 year we're pleased to inform you that our branch's role in hosting this year's VCC AGM is well in hand. Diarise that event, which is taking place 09/10 August.

Now that we're nearly into March it will be great to see you all at Club Nite on March 11. We're having our 'Shiney Parts Auction' which is always a bit of a hoot so don't forget to bring along some loose change.

Another big event for August is our annual fundraiser for the local branch of the Cancer Society. A huge 'thankyou' must go out to Trevor and Raewyn Hughes who have informed us that they'd like to be the coordinators of this event once more. Key decision makers in our club took approximately 0.005 seconds to gratefully accept their wonderful offer!

On a sad note I've had to pen yet another obituary, this time concerning the passing of Graeme Walker on the 22nd of February. Graeme was associated with cars and motoring for all of his adult life and he will be missed by many of us.

On Saturday February 24 I attended the Caffeine and Classics get together at Hull Road Mount Maunganui with Sam and a number of his Millennial mates. These people have a love of cars but present quite differently to those of you reading this who are Baby Boomers and in many instances even older. (You older ones may be defined in a previous category - but I can't find it on google)

Anyway - I've been thinking about this for quite some time and we all have to be mindful about those who potentially follow our foot steps. Their tastes, preferences and ways of doing things are way different to us - and I can't see that changing. So how do we make VCC attractive to them? That's the million dollar question I'll leave with you to ponder on.

Men versus Women!

Wifes Diary:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much.

I asked him what was wrong; He said, "Nothing." I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving.

I can't explain his behavior I don't know why he didn't say, "I love you, too." When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

Husband's Diary:

Vintage car wouldn't start, I can't figure it out.

2024 Eastern Bay of Plenty Rally-By

Suddenly, here we are in 2024 and because it is February, we were heading off to Whakatane for the Eastern Bay of Plenty Rally on the 3rd February. With the Waitangi Day holiday falling on Tuesday, it was a good excuse for many to make a long weekend and so the traffic was particularly heavy on Friday afternoon as we headed down through Tauranga and on to the Eastern Link Highway.

As an aside, the previous day both of us had an appointment in Omokoroa at 2.30p.m. and had heard on the radio that the traffic was shocking, even worse than normal! So we made a decision to leave Waihi Beach at 11.30a.m., thinking of a nice lunch at the other end. However our plans were very misguided as it took us one hour to get to Esdailes Road/Pahoia School and then a further hour to get across the "FLYING Mile" to the Omokoroa Turnoff! We were in a truck sandwich and felt so sorry for those guys trying to make a living as we sat on the bridge at the bottom for a good 15 minutes and then the trucks had to slowly, very slowly, make their way up the hill in temperatures of 28/29 degrees. Thank goodness for air conditioning and we were dreading the next day in our poor Graham Crusader!

We had a phone-call from the business we were going to, advising us to leave early and to come in when we got there as their appointments were all messed up with the traffic. Long story short, our 2.30 appointment happened at 1.45 and our return journey took us 50 minutes! Allow more time they say!!!

So, Friday we decided we would join the "Rat-run" at Wainui South Road, simply to place less pressure on the car - but no need! We were in TAURANGA in an hour!

Dropped the Puppy off with our family for his first holiday without us and away we went. Driving through Landing Road, we saw quite a few VCC cars so had hopes for a great day the next day. Staying at One88 on Commerce, as advised by other BOP members last year, was a real dream, quiet, large rooms with great air con made the stay fabulous, but by the time we went to dinner it was raining and when Helen and Les Duggan arrived around 8p.m. thanks to a false start from home, it was cold and wet.

Saturday morning we had an introduction to some horrible behaviour in the Main Street of Whakatane, when a local demanded money and on not receiving it, proceeded to storm off hurling abuse, kicking over signs, tables, chairs, anything he could find. Must have had a good night Friday night!

The gathering at Paroa Rugby Grounds was great. 41 cars, lots of old and new faces and some great cars. Lovely to see 5 cars from our branch in attendance. Nice to see James Turner & Ellen Sands, Marc and Rachael Williams, plus Helen and Les Duggan, Thelma and Graham Jack and ourselves there.

2024 Eastern Bay of Plenty Rally-By

Briefing was brief, with a note that Silent Checks were only in areas noted on our instructions and there was no timing. The day was still very overcast with threatening rain and chilly to what we had been experiencing in recent days. We started in no particular order and enjoyed a run through the maize areas nearby. It took a while to get into the organisers thinking, but by the time we got into the Coastlands area, we were on to it and found the fish, the bird and the flower, but it was tricky seeing the seven fish set into the front of a set of stairs. On into Whakatane, and more questions including: How many swans and 1....key? Found the swans and continued on, then a sudden thought, a turn around and there was the DONkey sitting beside the swans! Well done organisers. Things like ..C,..B, ..A - being Flats 8C, 8B and 8A, had us nicely comfortable and then the tricky ones started!

After a nice look down at the coastal bar entrance which was really rough and then a wind up and over the hills, we viewed some amazing scenery at the top of the Kohi Point Lookout. The day was now sunny and clear, but the seas very rough. On down through Ohope and naming the Princes. There was Phillip, William, Harry and Charles, but then the dilemma, Phillip is now deceased and Charles in now King, so what did the plotters want, (that was quite a 'discussion')! Now we headed out and around the Ōhiwa Harbour, turning left towards Gisborne and Ōpōtiki, then after passing through Kutarere, we turned left into Ruatuna Road, (never been out here), past the Pataua Island Scientific Reserve and onto Reeves Road, following this to the end of the road at Bryans Beach. What a really nice little area this was, lots of quirky little things like a whole lot of scarecrows in a veggie garden to see. We then retraced our steps back to Kutarere and continued on to the Nukuhou North Settlers Hall for lunch.

2024 Eastern Bay of Plenty Rally—By

Our lunch stop has been used several times and the last time we were there, it rained. This time we had a thunder storm, with lightning and very heavy rain thrown in to the mix. However, everyone waited till it stopped, then off we went for the afternoon section, heading North again, through the Waimana Gorge with heaps of steam coming off the road after the rain, and were almost out of the Gorge when there were a number of vehicles pulled up on the side of the road. We slowed and there was poor James Turner doing the walk of shame, carrying a wheel off his 1973 Triumph GT6! Poor guy, but how lucky that it hadn't happened even 1 kilometre sooner or they may have found themselves in the Waimana River! We did not stop as it was on a corner and there were a number of vehicles, (moderns included), already there.

Into Taneatua, we had straight lining to do and what an interesting area to do it in. Some very interesting properties in the back there, including a big trucking yard and a very old truck rusting away under a tree. It was here that we spotted Marc and Rachael and told them about their friends. Soon after this, we caught up to the person laying out the Silent Checks, so we agreed to stop all the traffic for 10 minutes so that he could get ahead and that turned out to be quite a nice little social time on the side of a nice quiet road. But by now it was almost 3pm, looking like rain and we were ready for a nice hot cuppa back at the Paroa Rugby Grounds. On the way back to our accommodation, a huge gust of wind blew a tree down just by the big bridge into Whakatane and just a few cars in front of us. No one was hurt, but a car was quite damaged and we were surprised that amongst all the locals that jumped out to help remove the tree, no-one had a chainsaw! The evening meal, once again, was a spectacular success. Gosh those caterers are good. We dined on ham, oysters, chicken, prawns, lamb, salads and veggies and then that dessert table again!! The prize giving was interesting and this years winners of the Vintage Class were a young couple from Gisborne with 2 very small boys sitting in car seats in the back of their 1930 Model A and waving to everyone with gusto. It was wonderful to see the smiles on all their faces, especially when they were announced as the Overall Winners! Graeme and I won the Post Vintage Class, Les and Helen won the Post War Class and Graham and Thelma Jack were second in Post 60 and Second overall. Very successful for Bay of Plenty Club. The Hard Luck Trophy was Awarded to James and Ellen, with a lot of questions about how they got on and how they were getting home, and we were assured that some of the locals were helping them out. Hope this was the case James and your car is on the road again now. Interestingly, Pat Burr and Shona Wickham won the Post 80 prize again this year. There was only one place getter from Auckland, John Comer on a 1958 BMW R5 motorbike. Four motorcycles took part this year - how good is that. Another successful Eastern BOP Rally done and we are already looking forward to next year. Thanks to Les and Gail Coster for a well thought out Rally which kept us interested and on our toes.

The Travelling J Team -

It was the most miserable day for us to start off on our sojourn to the South Island for 2-3 months, but as it was a travel day we did not mind too much.

We spent the first week slowly getting down to the ferry and catching up with friends on the way. We had a very easy crossing and the weather was fine. Our first stop was Blenheim at the racecourse, and boy was it hot, but we were treated to a day at the trots which was on to raise funds for Riding for the Disabled. So we slouched back and enjoyed the day, and a very welcome cool beer to round off the day.

After such a hectic year it was great to laze back and relax.

Our next stop was at Tapawera where an annual music festival organised by the local NZMCA Club was being held. There 808 motorhomes poured in and parked up - in one day - really it was quite a circus and kept us entertained all day watching them come in and settle in.

We thought well in all this crowd we will not know many folks but surprisingly we seem to know a lot and it was hugs all round and lots of talking, catching up with everyone, by the end of the day all talked out.

Friday off on the bikes to do one of the trails, stopped at the coffee shop 10klm down the road for cuppa and coffee then back to camp. In afternoon the music started and so it went on for most of the weekend, biking, talking, music and beer This is why I enjoy these kind of events, there is so much vibes in the air and even though we are in the twilight of our life we can still do it all as if we were young, although at a lot slower pace. Yeah for electric bikes!!!!!

Leaving Tapawera behind it was over to the West Coast. Westport for the mundane things like emptying the on-board waste, filling up with water, fuel, LPG, washing and of course food. I think with a lots of vans pouring into Westport we just about emptied the supermarket shelves out, the Freedom parking places were full to overflowing, as there were a lot of tourists around as well, mostly in cars though some in rental vans - and most looked like they were just out of nappies (showing my age now with that comment).

Over the next 2 weeks we slowly worked our way up the coast to Karamea and to the start of the Heaphy Track I walked up some of it just to say I had been on the Track (Ha ha)

We stayed in freedom camping areas, private places to park, (called POP stops) Local Pubs, and one camp ground - all with their own unique interesting points to admire.

We went up to the Denniston mine which has now been preserved by the locals and lots to read about, the history of the mine and the early days of mining in NZ. What a life these people had so very very hard, we don’t know what hard work or bad living conditions are like until you see what they had to endure, some of the women never came off the plateau ever, the trip down to the coast was too perilous.

The other mine we did as a bus tour was the Stockton mine, still working and it was just as interesting. (Continuednextpage)

13

The Travelling J Team (Continued)

The one place that we stayed at for several days was a camp called Gentle Annie on the Mokihinui River my most favourite camp ground ever, was quirky definitely different, right on the beach and the river. It has an old cowshed turned into the reception area and lounge for campers. It has a very large wood fired pizza oven out the back, go collect your own firewood off the beach, light the oven at around 4 pm and wait for it to heat up, then bring all your own ingredients to make up your pizza’s, then cook and eat - delicious. Around the pizza outdoors area was a melting pot of people from all over the world enjoying each other’s company and eating their own home made pizzas.

What an atmosphere, it’s a pity the rest of the world was not like this, we would not be having wars and causing so much misery to so many people. We were sorry to leave as the weather had been kind and the spot magical.

We then left the Westport area and worked our way down to Greymouth, stopping at Cape Foulwind for several nights and doing the trail rides around the area (and yes, starting to get Fit - legs not aching so much after a ride) we have done lots of riding now.

Then The Fox River and much to my delight it was low tide at a respectable time and off to get mussels off the rocks. This was a freedom camping area and boy was it busy, full up every night that we were there, mostly with what we call” whizz bangs” (small vans with sliding doors with young tourists in them. They spend half their time in and out of the van, slide bang , slide bang, until quite late sometimes - hence called whizz bangs).

Then suddenly Greymouth was in sight and we stayed here for about 5 nights.

Greymouth is the start of the Wilderness trail. One can cycle for 158 kms if you are that way inclined, for us we are more leisurely inclined, 20 – 30 kms is our limit.

The trails are all very easy for us oldies, and enjoyable without being too taxing.

We are now in a small place called Ikhamatua waiting to go into the big NZMCA National Rally, and so it will be again talking, music and beer but this time will have various seminars to attend. That is the end of this saga to this point (end of February).

Next off over the Lewis Pass after the rally and into the Central Otago area to do some more trails and exploring.

Meeting new people along the way and admiring our beautiful country in the peace that we take for granted here in NZ.

McGregor Clubman 7 Project.

John Bauer bought his McGregor Clubman 7 project car to our February Club night, and it was wheeled inside the Clubrooms. He then gave us an interesting and informative presentation on the car, which was warmly welcomed by the assembled Members.

John kindly sent comprehensive information on his car , which we reproduce on this and following pages.

Thank you John!

McGregor Clubman 7 –Lotus 7 Replica

Built from November 2024 to July 2026 – Builder John Bauer

This car is based on the series 3 Lotus Seven, vintage round 1963, and I tried to keep the configuration as close as possible to the original car.

The main difference is the 5 speed gearbox behind the 1600cc Twin Cam 16 Valve Toyota 4 AG-E engine. The original engine in the Lotus Seven was a Ford BDA 1600cc Twin Cam 16 Valve engine with a 4 speed gearbox and twin Webber DCOE carburettors. It is registered as a LVV (Low Volume Vehicle) and has passed the certification to enable it to be registered and warranted for road use.

The kit was manufactured by McGregor Motor Sports out of Christchurch and I purchased the frame, suspension (front & back), body panels, lights (front & rear) and instruments.

The rest of the parts I sourced from Pick a Part and completely restored these parts to as new condition. I did purchase a Mk 2 Escort donor car for the Escort parts needed (rolling chassis only). Time to source parts was 18 months and 15 months to build, time frames crossed over so total time 20 months to take it for final certification, WOF and register for road use in July 2006.

McGregor Clubman 7 Project.

In August 2004 I decided to do something I had dreamed of since I was 10 years old, own a Lotus 7. As I wanted a challenge after finishing home renovations I thought the best way would be to build one, or at least a replica. I did some research on the internet and found an incredible amount of information available, so went looking for the basic components that I would need to make a start. I found a MK II Escort on Trademe that was no longer roadworthy and after a phone call and borrowing a mates car trailer had a complete car for the basic running gear for the rear end. Another score was finding a Toyota 4A-GE series III motor that had been rebuilt, but the owner could not afford to finish the conversion into a car so decided to sell the motor for the cost of the rebuild.

Now I had the basics I need to find a kit, so after extensive research and a visit to the supplier decided on a kit from McGregor Motorsport Ltd in Christchurch which I could order in various stages. I placed the order with John McGregor and then started the stripping of the components I needed off the MK II Escort, and reconditioning them. As I am an Automotive Engineer by trade but no longer working on the tools at my present place of employment, I enjoyed getting my hands dirty again. Another source for parts that I found was a Pick-a-Part wrecker’s yard where I spent many hours getting things like the front hubs, stubs and discs off a MKV Cortina, steering column from a Mazda 323 and various other bits. The last best score I had was buying a project that had been started as a homebuilt, but was taking up garage space so had to go. This provided things like a wiring loom, gearbox and bell housing and on selling components that I did not require to off set some of my costs. The Kit arrived from Christchurch on a pallet in April 2005 and the task of assembly was started. It all went together really easily at the start, but little challenges like engine mounts, steering column mounts etc took some thinking about and by the end of winter 2005 I had a rolling chassis ready for the second inspection, the first inspection was when it first arrived on the pallet.

As with all projects you spend 20% of the time doing 80% of the work and 80% of the time doing 20% of the work to get it finished. This is where I am at now. I have spent more time sorting out the wiring and getting it ready for the final certification then I had anticipated, but I am determined to get it right. Hopefully this will happen over the next couple of months and we will be taking nice winter Sunday drives and daily to work over the 2006/2007 summer.

17

McGregor Clubman 7 Project.

I have managed a couple of drives around the block and the first drive was an experience I will always remember. It was more of a thrill than I had anticipated and cannot wait till it is certified and registered so I can legally drive it on the open road.

Work in progress, will keep you informed. (Editornote thecarisnowcompleted)

VIC Application forms

PLEASENOTE:The application form for a Vehicle Identity Card has changed from a 7 page application to 15 pages. The extra pages relate to explanations regarding whether you receive a “DOMAS” or a “VIC”, depending on the state of the Vehicle at the time of the application. Go to wwww.vcc.org.nz, and in the panel on the LHS is the option “RESOURCES/ DOWNLOAD” accessing that will show “VIC Application”. Print the required pages and note the requirements for the photos.

It is suggested that you complete all the pages and then contact either

Alastair Jones 07 5761124 - or - Ivan Allen 07 5432629 beforesending the photos to Nat. Office Christchurch. This is to ensure the photos are as required and don’t get there before the paperwork, which in almost all cases has to be checked against the vehicle to make sure there aren’t any errors. Either of the VIC Officers are there to assist not hinder!
