THE NARRABRI REGION The untamed beauty of Mt Kaputar, the tranquil Pilliga Artesian Bore Bath, and the wondrous CSIRO Australia Telescopes are just a few of the attractions that make Narrabri Region a must-see destination. COVERING 13,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES, the Narrabri Region is the heart of the rich Namoi Valley in North West NSW and is home to the Kamilaroi People. The region boasts three major towns, Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri, with several smaller villages scattered throughout. Renowned for the production of some of the world’s highest quality wheat, cotton, fat lambs and beef, and home to several research facilities, the Narrabri Region is truly an agricultural wonderland. Coal seam gas exploration and coal mining are also now a part of the Region’s expanding economic base. One glimpse of a clear night sky will leave you with no doubts as to why this region is known as “Big Sky” country. Star-filled night skies have facilitated the growth of the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array, whose six radio telescopes are gleaming beacons of scientific advancement. Enjoy the natural wonders of Mt Kaputar National Park; search for the Yowie in the Pilliga, the largest forest in NSW; or simply view the picturesque patchwork of seemingly endless fields of cotton and wheat which are sure to

impress. Add the Pilliga Artesian Bore Bath, Narrabri Fish Farm, Yarrie Lake, historical museums, art galleries, The Crossing Theatre, birdwatching and fishing to the mix and you’re guaranteed many fun-filled days. The Newell and Kamilaroi Highways run through the Narrabri Region, bringing people from all compass points. For those travelling from further afield, the region is also serviced by planes and trains. Accommodation is plentiful and of excellent standard, including motels, caravan parks, B&Bs, campgrounds and farm stays. We hope the tourism information within this guide will add to your knowledge and enjoyment of our Region and make you feel welcome. Our Visitor Information Centre is here to help you and with a great selection of local souvenirs, historical books and delicious regional produce, is an essential stop on your Narrabri Region itinerary.

WELCOME TO GAMILAROI/GOMEROI/ KAMILAROI COUNTRY We acknowledge the Gamilaroi/ Gomeroi/Kamilaroi people, the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live, work and play, and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. Fishing! THE NAMOI RIVER COVERS 42,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES and is a major tributary of the MurrayDarling Basin. These waters are home to the Murray Cod or ‘Goodoo’ to the traditional Gamilaraay/ Kamilaroi people. This iconic species is Australia’s largest native freshwater fish and is highly regarded by sport anglers the world over. Other native species stocked in these waters include Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Eel Tailed Catfish. Commonly used live baits include worms, freshwater yabbies or shrimp, however these species will often take specially designed artificial lures. Fishing tackle, bait traps and fishing licences can be purchased in the region. All information is available from the Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre. Anglers are required to hold a current NSW Recreational Fishing Licence, and size and bag limits apply to each species. The practice of responsible fishing and catch-and-release ensures that these river populations continue to flourish for future generations to enjoy. For Rules and Regulations visit:

MOUNT KAPUTAR NATIONAL PARK

cultural significance

PRONUNCIATION Cap–you–tar CALL 02 6792 7300 National Parks and Wildlife Services Office (NPWS) ALLOW 3 Hrs minimum Today you’re heading for the sky! From the 1512m summit of Mt Kaputar, 52 kilometres east of Narrabri, you will be treated to panoramic views encompassing a staggering ten percent of NSW, weather permitting. Explore the rugged island of wilderness that is the Mt Kaputar National Park, an ancient footprint left behind by a series of volcanic eruptions between 17 and 21 million years ago. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, bush walker, camper or simply seeking a little solitude, prepare to be spellbound by the grandeur of this landscape of lava terraces and volcanic plugs. Mt Kaputar National Park protects a wide variety of plant communities, including semiarid woodlands, wet eucalypt forests and subalpine heaths. It is also home to a host of animal species and provides a haven for many threatened species – including bats, birds, wallabies and quolls. Keep an eye out for the Kaputar giant pink slug and rock skink. They only exist in this park and found nowhere else in the world! For those with time to thoroughly explore the park, two camping areas with hot showers and electric barbeques are available as well as three well equipped cabins at Dawsons Spring. Mt Kaputar has a range of walks to suit all tastes, from pleasant bush ramblings to strenuous climbs. A guide for the marked walking tracks is available in the pull-out map section, the Visitor Information Centre, NPWS office in Narrabri, or online.

DERIAH ABORIGINAL AREA

cultural significance

PRONUNCIATION Deh-ree-ah ALLOW 1 Hr Deriah Aboriginal Area offers a unique insight into the traditions and culture of the Gamilaroi, Kamilaroi, Gamilaraay, Gomeroi language Nation. The area is nestled on the western slopes of Nandewar Ranges between Narrabri and Mt Kaputar National Park, and is co-managed by NPWS and the Deriah Aboriginal Area Joint Management Committee. This fascinating region offers breathtaking scenic views, as well as great picnicking, walking and birdwatching opportunities to locals and visitors alike.

SAWN ROCKS

cultural significance

PRONUNCIATION Sorn Rocks CALL 02 6792 7300 National Parks and Wildlife Services Office (NPWS) ALLOW 1 Hr minimum Keen to experience an almighty wall of organ pipes without stepping foot inside a church? Then Sawn Rocks, with its towering 40m high pillars is the place to go.

Undoubtedly the most iconic reminder of Kaputar’s volcanic past, this basalt rock formation is located in the northern section of Mt Kaputar National Park. As you head north along the Newell Highway, the plains to the west stretch to eternity whilst the furls and rugged peaks of the Nandewar Ranges unfold to the east. Just 3 kilometres out of town, turn right onto the picturesque Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road) and travel a further 33 kilometres to the Sawn Rocks car park. From the car park Sawn Rocks is reached via an easy 750m walking track that meanders through tall eucalyptus, figs and ferns. An observation platform affords stunning views of the intriguing rock formation jutting starkly from the bed of Bobbiwaa Creek. Stairs to the side enable access to the creek bed upon which outlines of more pillars are visible. This unusual phenomenon is the result of slow and even cooling of molten rock, which enabled individual crystals within the rock to align perfectly with each other. Visitors can walk down the stairs to the creek bed where fallen hexagonal rock pillars are visible, creating a magical sense of ancient ruins. A shelter and barbecue area are available next to the car park for those wishing to enjoy the scenery.

WAA GORGE

cultural significance

PRONUNCIATION War Gorge CALL (02) 6792 7300 National Parks and Wildlife Services Office (NPWS) ALLOW 2 Hrs Yet another reminder of the region’s volcanic past, Waa Gorge is as spectacular as it is old. You’ll be entranced by the towering tangerine streaked walls sweeping up to the ancient volcanic plug, Mt Waa. Millions of years of weathering turned cracks and fault lines into the deeply etched Gorge and surrounding gullies you see today. The sheer scale positively dwarfs, while the enormous boulders strewn across the Gorge’s floor look like marbles in a giant’s playground.

8

Explore Narrabri Region

Waa Gorge is located in the far north of Mt Kaputar National Park, approximately one hour from Narrabri. Check the weather before you set out as the road to Waa Gorge can become boggy when it rains. Allambie Road is DRY WEATHER ROAD ONLY and passes through private property, so please respect landholders by leaving gates as you find them and staying off wet roads. The walk into Waa Gorge takes a good hour and visitors need to be prepared with water and sturdy shoes. From the car park, a short walk through the picnic area leads you to the “Mill Bullah” (Two Eyes) waterholes. From here the walk enters wilderness area and is not signposted, but an interpretive sign gives detailed directions. Climb the small hill on the left of the waterholes and follow the

creek for a few hundred metres until you find your way into the rocky creek bed that leads to Waa Gorge.

4WD BARRABA TRACK ADVENTURE LOOP This 4WD itinerary is a great way for visitors to experience multiple areas in 1-2 days. Start in Narrabri, head up to Mt Kaputar and explore the many walks and lookouts. Camp at the Dawsons Spring or Bark Hut, before driving down the Barraba track (permit required – available through NPWS) early the next morning. On the way stop in at Horton Falls, head into Barraba for lunch or coffee, then head north and check out Glacial Area, then finish off at Sawn Rocks or Waa Gorge on the way back to Narrabri. Please research the itinerary and car route before starting your adventure.

ROCKY CREEK GLACIAL AREA cultural significance

ALLOW 3 Hrs Not managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service The Rocky Creek Glacial Area is yet another geological wonder to explore. Before you jump in your car and head out there be warned, there is no ice to be seen! Nor will you find any of the typical glacial land form features, such as steep sided, flat-bottomed, U-shaped valleys. These land form features are the result of glaciers which existed during the last one million years, in the Pleistocene Epoch.

The Rocky Creek glaciation is much older, dating back some 290 million years to the Carboniferous Period. A vast amount of weathering and erosion occurs in over 200 million years, so all the original glacial landscape features have been eroded away and replaced by those typically associated with running water. If you wish to continue this geology lesson pick up a more detailed information leaflet at the Visitor Information Centre in Narrabri. And if geology’s not your thing, the glacial area is also a lovely picnic spot and a great place to go for a swim. Camping is permitted in this area although there are no facilities. Please take all rubbish with you.

BLACK SNAKE DISTILLERY

Black Snake Distillery is the first distillery in Australia to create a “paddock to bottle” agave spirit (ASp). Husband and wife team, Stephen and Rosemary, harvest the mature agaves and trim the leaves to form pinyas of up to 150kg. These are roasted in a pit, electrically milled and then fermented in stainless steel or wood. Distillation is done in a copper pot still. Black Snake creates several lines of agave spirit and two excellent Gins. These can be enjoyed in the small Mexican styled bar located in the distillery. The bar is intimate, so bookings are suggested but not essential. You can find Black Snake in many bars around Australia and is prized for its small batch artisanal produce.

BOGGABRI WAS PROCLAIMED a township in 1860, but came into its own in 1882 with the opening of the railway. Today Boggabri, located on the Kamilaroi Highway east of Narrabri, is a historic small country town with big community spirit offering a unique country lifestyle. With a rich agricultural history and several recently opened coal mines, the town is set for further expansion. Boggabri has a great little town centre with quality shops, a popular RSL Club and Hotel, a recently updated motel and a Caravan Park (with cabins).

fi sh in g The picturesque Namoi River meanders through Narrabri Shire from Boggabri to Pilliga. Directions to the best known fishing spots along the river are available from the Visitor Information Centre. Bag limits and fishing licences apply in the rivers of NSW.

On the outskirts of town is a nine hole golf course which neighbours the Boggabri Showground. The Showground is also used by caravanners and is the host of the extremely popular Drover’s Campfire which is held in late April every year. The main business area of Boggabri has over the years been found in three different streets. This makes for an interesting mix of architecture which can be explored with a walk along the Boggabri Heritage Trail.

BOGGABRI GIN’S LEAP cultural significance

WHERE Kamilaroi Highway, 5 kilometres north of Boggabri on the left hand side This striking rock face, towering over the Kamilaroi Highway outside Boggabri, has been known by many names over the years. Local Aboriginals knew it as “Cooloobindi” or “Gagabaayindaay”, whilst it was known as “Bullaballakit” in the era when Sir Thomas Mitchell was exploring the Namoi Valley. In Cobb and Co coach days, it was known as “The Rock” and now it goes by “Gin’s Leap”. The widely accepted origins of the current name follow the tragic death of a pair of illfated young Aboriginal lovers, a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The young girl, promised to an elder of her tribe, the Kamilaroi, ran away with a young Aboriginal man from another tribe. Hotly pursued by Kamilaroi tribesmen, the lovers jumped to their deaths from somewhere along the top of this rock.

BARBERS LAGOON AND BARBERS PINNACLE cultural significance

Local landmarks Barbers Lagoon and Barbers Pinnacle take their names from George “The Barber” Clarke, a runaway convict who inhabited the area from 1826 to 1831. Clarke had been sentenced to farm work in Singleton in 1825, following an armed robbery conviction. He later escaped and lived in the north west with the Kamilaroi people, who seem to have regarded him as one of their own returned from the dead. Clarke took two Aboriginal wives and wandered the plains stealing cattle. He was caught by the authorities and hanged in 1831. PRONUNCIATION Edge-er-oi MEANING “A creek” POPULATION 96

Edgeroi is an agricultural village that lies just 26 kilometres north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway. The rich black soil surrounding it allows for the growing of wheat, sorghum, cotton, and grazing cattle and sheep. It also has great views over the Nandewar Ranges.

BELLATA

PRONUNCIATION Bell-at-a MEANING “Home of Belar Tree” POPULATION 266

The village of Bellata, located 42 kilometres north of Narrabri on the Newell Highway, has a long and proud history in agriculture due to the surrounding rich productive black basalt soils. Situated in the “Golden Durum Triangle”, the Bellata area is responsible for producing some of Australia’s best “prime hard” wheat. The area is bustling with energy around harvest and sowing times. The area is also home to several large olive groves and for its natural minerals such as petrified and opalised wood and agate.

MAULES CREEK

BAAN BAA

Situated at the foothills of Mt Kaputar National Park, the rugged and enchanting landscape hides rich black soil, perfectly suited for farming. As a result the region harbours some of the country’s leading cattle studs. Water flows from the mountains, trickling through Melaleuca lined creeks to arrive as clear as crystal. Many beautiful locations along the river provide captivating hideaways to have a picnic or just enjoy the presence of nature.

Located approximately 20 kilometres north west of Boggabri on the Kamilaroi Highway, Baan Baa had early beginnings as a squatting run. Little remains of this previously bustling railway village which once boasted its own bakery, two general stores, a stock and station agent, butchery, ice cream shop, hotel, two churches and a service station. The remaining pub is still popular and is renowned for a Sunday Roast.
