In this economic climate, where businesses are struggling across the UK, Kent’s green economy appears to be thriving. Green Alliance has recently released a report that reveals the south-east to be leading the way in environmentally friendly business. It predicts that with this surge in the industry, creating 172 renewable energy jobs in the 2011-12 financial year, the green economy will have grown by 40 per cent by 2014.

Michael Fallon, MP for Sevenoaks and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, was appointed last month to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. This decision by David Cameron has been perceived by many as a means to counterbalance Vince Cable’s more insensitive views on British industry. However, Downing Street argues that Mr Fallon’s position is to act as “the voice of business”.

FESTIVAL SPECIAL

OPEN AIR EYNSFORD Last month, the sleepy village of Eynsford played host to one of the most promising new music events in the country. Nick Chowdrey tells us why this festival is so special

G

rest of the night, with excellent performances from incredibly talented cover bands Kings_ Ov_Leon and The Upbeat Beatles. Ultimately, the stand-out band of the festival had to be trance metal juggernauts, Silent Descent. Although the most successful act on the bill, it was hit and miss as to whether their eccentric sound would wash with the family crowd. By their final song, the whole crowd – from ages eight to 68 – were headbanging along. We caught up briefly with Will Morris, one of the festival’s organisers. “This festival is all about the local community,” said Will. “Not only are we supporting local bands and charities, but we’ve also given young people in the area a chance to help build and manage the festival site.” With bigger bands to book and bigger fields in which to expand, next year’s festival is surely set to be something special.

Taking place on the first of September in the fields behind Anthony Roper primary school, the second annual Eynsford Music Festival featured seven incredible live bands, as well as a host of activities, stalls and food and drink stands. 1,070 people attended the event across the day, with all the proceeds going towards local charities, such as Eynsford Village Hall and the local Scouts. Opening the event were the young and incredibly talented English Sporting Defeats, who made for a fiery start to the day with their endearing hybrid of extremely well-executed indie folk rock. Next up were Long Way Down – a solid, rock covers band and after them The Artie Fufkins provided a lighter offering in the late afternoon with their own brand of laid-back rock, reminiscent of Dire Straits and Squeeze. The first band to get the crowd really up on their feet was The Fecks who had everyone singing along with a particularly innovative cover of 'Mr Brightside', by The Killers. MUST-READ Most widely known for his bestselling novels Atonement and Enduring Love, Ian McEwan’s latest release, Sweet Tooth, is an intriguing tale of espionage, set in the uncertain world of 1970s London. Serena Frome, the beautiful daughter of an Anglican bishop, is sent on a ‘secret mission’, which ensnares her in a fictional relationship with a promising young writer. McEwan’s mastery dazzles us in this superbly deft and witty story of betrayal and intrigue, love, and the invented self.

Megaliths of alternative rock, Muse return this month with their sixth studio album, ‘The Second Law’. Set for worldwide release on the 1st of October, bassist Christopher Wolstenholme told Kerrang that the album would be “something radically different” from the band’s previous endeavours. ‘Survival’, the album’s first single, is the official song of London 2012 and was performed by the band live at the Games’ closing ceremony. A spellbinding hybrid of rock and classical, it’s a promising sign of things to come.

FESTIVAL SPECIAL

A Weekend in

WESTERHAM

T

The village of Westerham, well known for its community spirit, has been holding gala weekends since the 1930s. Nick Chowdrey looks back at the history of these festivities and how the gala is celebrated today

he first Westerham Gala is thought to have been held on 6 May 1935 in celebration of the Silver Jubilee of King George V, our Queen’s paternal grandfather. This developed into somewhat of a tradition and a gala day was held on Whit Monday (May bank holiday) every year for decades. The celebrations took many forms over the years, but the focal point was always a parade through the village. The picture to the right shows a large crowd of locals gathered to watch a procession, consisting of a marching band and a group of performers wearing oversized heads and fancy dress. Sporting events were also arranged for the bank holiday. A programme from 1954, available in the archives at Sevenoaks library, advertises a host of sporting events taking place in King George’s field. Among the events were a toddler’s race, a married couples’ mixed shoe race, a tug-o’-war, and, for the main event, a gala day challenge cup offering the grand prize of a princely £2. Unfortunately, as the pressures of modern life slowly invaded the quaint village, this tradition fizzled out. By the early nineties, fewer and fewer villagers could dedicate the time required for such involved voluntary commitments and the last Whit

Monday celebration was held in 1991. Today, the Westerham Town Partnership – a steering group formed of local volunteers – has revived the traditional gala, with a slightly revised date. The second annual Gala weekend was held on September 8 and 9 this year, with around 3,000 thought to have attended. Celebrated slightly differently than in previous years, attractions on offer comprised: a fair at the long pond, including a display of model boats, live music children’s entertainment and a host of local stalls; a scarecrow trail through the village featuring recognisable figures from television adverts; and free entry to Quebec House, which played host to a re-enactment of an 18th century camp of soldiers. Jane Hunter, member of the Westerham Town Partnership and one of the organisers of the event, commented that, “the beautiful weather certainly contributed towards the event’s success. Figures taken at the weekend by Quebec House suggest that attendance was up 30 per cent from last year. Next time, we hope to see an even bigger turnout.”

NEWS from

COMMUNITY STARs John Douglas

For instance, Labour’s 1,000 pages of planning rules shrink to just 52. Kick-starting bank lending. Our Funding for Lending scheme encourages banks to make mortgages and loans cheaper and more easily available. Many businesses and aspiring homeowners will now get the credit they need. Investing in our workforce. We’re creating the biggest number of apprenticeships this country has ever seen to provide the necessary skills; employment law is being reformed to boost competitiveness and make it easier for businesses to hire. We’re radically reforming welfare to get people off benefits and into work. There’s a lot of work to be done to get the economy growing; I’m glad to be able to do my part.

John Douglas is a retired businessman from Westerham who continues to engage in incredible charity work in support of young people in Tanzania. John’s interest in the country spawned from his wife Julia, who was born in the town of Mbeya, near the southern border with Zambia. He visited the country many times, observing both its beauty and abject poverty, eventually meeting Katy Allen – a Sevenoaks resident and director of a charity called Village Education Project Kilimanjaro (VEPK). John visited VEPK’s centre in Marangu at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, which provides training and education in a variety of fields to local villagers. He noticed a lack of training in motor mechanics, which would be a huge benefit to the community, but was impossible to implement due to limited funds. Intent on making a difference, John set about raising the £50k required by organising a climb up the highest mountain in Africa. And so KiliClimbs was born and in 2011 he led a team of 19 UK volunteers, raising in excess of £70k. A 2013 climb is currently being planned.

A lot has changed since last month. I was offered the post of Business Minister in the reshuffle and was delighted to accept. I’ve always taken a strong interest in business and am pleased to be its champion. It’s important to celebrate the people who generate prosperity for us all. Living standards have increased dramatically since the Industrial Revolution due to the combination of scientific discovery and entrepreneurial capitalism which has created the goods and services we enjoy today. However, we ought to do more than just salute wealth creators. We need to make life easier for business. This is what the Coalition is fully focused on doing. Here are 3 key areas. Cutting red tape. We plan to scrap nearly half the 6,500 regulations and have already removed hundreds through our Red Tape Challenge.

LEGAL MATTERS The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month, Charles Tennant discusses back to school blues

A

re you, like many other parents, breathing a sigh of relief as the new academic year commences and the dreaded school summer holidays are over as at last? The stress of entertaining children for weeks on end can often place a great financial and emotional strain on even the strongest of marriages. If cracks had already started to form, the holiday period can sadly be the catalyst for irretrievable relationship breakdown. Family lawyers have long recognised, albeit anecdotally amongst them, that there tends to be a peak in new enquiries for matrimonial advice after school holidays. This seems to be because whilst the family are spending ‘quality time’ together, people do not want to acknowledge or deal with relationship breakdown. Whilst this is perfectly understandable, it should be borne in mind that the sooner a fair settlement of the issues can be achieved, the better it usually is for all involved, including children. Delay can cause additional complex issues to arise, increase acrimony and lead to increased legal fees, all of which most couples wish to avoid. Situated in our discreet offices in Sevenoaks, we have some of the finest family and children solicitors in Kent. Our team is committed to helping you

through what can be a traumatic and upsetting time, providing you with the highest levels of professional service and advice. The family team comprises five specialist solicitors who are highly skilled in dealing with all matters of family breakdown, ranging from the most straightforward divorce to high net worth individuals with their complex financial affairs. We are uniquely placed to be able to offer our clients access to a range of Family Law services, including the innovative Collaborative option and also Mediation. Recognising that many individuals are deterred from taking advice because of fears about costs, the family team are currently offering a free, no-obligation initial consultation to prospective new clients. This enables you to obtain initial advice about your circumstances in the strictest confidence and without worrying about its cost. Warners have been providing legal services in Sevenoaks for year and have been well known within West Kent for over two centuries, having had offices in Tonbridge since 1785. n To arrange your FREE consultation contact the family team on 01732 747900, family@warners-solicitors.co.uk Follow Warners on Twitter @ KentSolicitors

.M. Parkin was a Sevenoaks artist best known for his prolific drawings, engravings and watercolours depicting daily life and nature in his home village of Kemsing. During a career spanning nearly five decades, A.M. Parkin was commissioned by the likes of Victor Lownes and Lord Iliffe, while his work received praise from influential critics including Max Wykes-Joyce and Terence Mullaly as well as the artist Graham Sutherland – sponsor of A.M. Parkin’s first London solo exhibition at the Langton Gallery in Chelsea. A.M. Parkin’s work has been exhibited at galleries including the Royal Academy, while his 1985 engraving of Quentin Crisp is held at London’s National Portrait Gallery. In 2011 his work was selected by the art critic Brian Sewell for the Discerning Eye exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London. A . M. Parkin – A Village Artist is a beautiful limited edition book that has forty pages and contains over eighty exquisitely reproduced drawings and engravings. This is a retrospective collection that stretches from 1963 to 2012. His work focused exclusively on an area of woodland wilderness surrounding a small village and on the people who lived and worked nearby. There is a brief commentary from the artist that offers an insight into his love for the chosen area and he describes how he managed to remain deeply inspired by it for almost fifty years. n For every copy sold, a donation will be made to the Monty Parkin Memorial Trust. This is a new charitable organisation has been set up to support young local artists who are most in need, via the distribution of art prizes and bursaries.

Finally it arrived! The sun that eluded us for much of the summer, came forth and shone for the majority of September. The garden of the George & Dragon, Chipstead was full most days with customers making the most of lunch and early dinner amongst the herbs and flowers in the last of the years true warmth. The blackberry and apple daiquiri we ran as September’s cocktail of the month was ever popular and apple, it would seem is the versatile flavour that resonated most with people when discussing mixed cocktails and drinks. With apple picking season well under way, I took a quick trip out to the Hop Shop at Castle Farm in Shoreham to see my good friends the Alexanders. Regular readers will remember my article a couple of years ago discussing the diversity of the farm with pick your own apples being a popular attraction in the latter months of the year. The Norfolk Royal apple orchard on the farm is a relative rarity in commercial apple growing. However, this bright red medium sweet apple is perfect for eating, cooking and makes the most gorgeous apple juice. We have stocked the juice at the George & Dragon, Chipstead since our early days and it is a firm favourite with customers of all ages. This month’s cocktail of the month Amaretto & apple sour is twist on a classic, served in a jam jar it is set to be another firm favourite. Castle Farm is also a great source of pumpkins and squash. The Crown Prince pumpkin with its grey stone coloured skin and bright orange flesh is a great addition to your grocery shopping at this time of year. Why not try something a little different and make a dessert with it. Orange & pumpkin cheesecake with orange caramel always sells well at the George & Dragon, Chipstead and is relatively simple to make. With all the focus on autumnal produce, one could almost escape the excitement and discussions that are happening every day surrounding Christmas party bookings. Our menus were put on our website at the beginning of September. After listening to feedback from our regular customers we opted not to include turkey as a main course option. Well it would seem that all those in favour of not having turkey for a Christmas party have changed their mind, as with deposits being paid and tables booked, requests for turkey have been coming in thick and fast, so much so that I thought about posting a #iwantturkey on our twitter account. Obviously we met each request with a firm “of course” and have since issued another Christmas party menu, this time with turkey, so with or without turkey, we are set once again to provide a memorable Christmas party for all at the George & Dragon, Chipstead.

Transforming

YOUR SMILE

W

Everyone wants to have that perfect smile and at Total Orthodontics they are making those dreams a reality, with many adults seeking a more confident and healthy-looking smile

hether your motivation for wanting to improve your smile is completely aesthetic or clinically necessary, Total Orthodontics will help you to achieve the result you are looking for. It is the role of orthodontics to gently move teeth and straighten them, transforming your smile. Braces provide an alternative to veneers, without the loss of tooth structure and the results, if properly maintained, will last you a lifetime. If it is the thought of wearing braces that puts you off you will be amazed by the wide range of ‘invisible braces’ on offer at Total Orthodontics. As a patient you can choose from clear, removable aligners and braces that are hidden on the inside surfaces of your teeth, giving you confidence throughout your treatment. As winners of ‘Best Customer Service’ at the 2011 Sussex Business Awards, you can be assured you’ll be looked after every step of the way. Treatment even includes two years of follow-up care after you have finished wearing your braces and you’ll also receive customised fixed retainers to ensure your teeth stay straight, so you can keep on smiling. A no-obligation consultation with a specialist orthodontist is free of charge, so call today and take the first step towards a beautiful new smile.

MEET THE TEAM We meet the man behind the smiles – specialist orthodontist John Costello – and ask him a few questions about the life of an orthodontist How long have you been straightening the smiles of Kent? A long time – for the past 14 years. What would you say the best thing about your job is? I would say transforming patients’ smiles and seeing their confidence grow. Braces have always been associated with teenagers and school children, so why do you think more adults are now choosing to have them? Something that many people don’t realise about orthodontics is how far it’s come in recent years. Braces are now far more discreet and we can even fit them behind the teeth! What do you get up to when you’re not straightening teeth? I try to keep up with four lively sons (attempting to convince them that I am better than them at everything). If you weren’t an orthodontist what would you have done?

INVISALIGN® OPEN EVENING

I would be an international rugby player scoring the winning try in the World Cup (I wish!).

Tuesday 6 November 2012 Tonbridge Practice 4-7pm Free consultation and up to £750 off the cost of Invisalign clear braces.

t is not uncommon for many parents to have sleepless nights and the importance of your baby’s sleep is key to their development. Judy has learnt over the years that if a child has difficulty sleeping, then this sleeping pattern can continue for up to five years. However, it is never too late to change this. With Judy’s experience and expertise, she is able to give parents the knowledge of how to give their baby the best night's sleep. Reader offer It is recommended that your baby sleeps FREE 15-minute between 12-13 hours a consultation with Judy night, depending on their when you mention this age and weight, and it is possible to do this with any voucher. child from the age of three months and weighing more than 10Ibs. To teach parents ways of doing this, Judy sets up a simple ten-day plan, showing parents the importance of routine and does in-depth research into why your baby is not sleeping, discovering the root to the problem. When we visited one of Judy’s seminars at Silverdale Nursery last month, she shared tips on getting your baby to sleep through the night. The atmosphere was friendly and chatty, with Judy asking and answering questions throughout, as well as giving examples of problems she overcame with her two daughters. Judy is the UK’s first expert sleep sense consultant, running Babywinkz to give tired parents advice. She is now expanding her business and giving guidance to all parents in the Kent area, fighting the battle of sleepless nights.

CARING FOR

OUR COMMUNITY In this column I discuss topical issues around social care. Whether you are wrestling with a family dilemma, looking for support for a loved one, or just interested in the debate, I hope you will find something of interest Richard Gould is managing director at TerraBlu Homecare

Things to do to prepare an older relative’s home in the autumn As we feel the end of the summer approaching, making sure an older relative who you support is prepared for the colder weather is time well spent. Sorting the fabric of their home. These are the bigger more expensive jobs. Booking the annual service of a boiler or making sure you have bled all the radiators, so that when the heating system fires up – it works. Roof repairs are also worth paying attention to, slipped tiles or leaking downpipes. Old electric heaters, such as those with open coil elements and frayed cables are worth inspecting suspiciously, and maybe negotiating their retirement! Lighter maintenance stuff. Once the leaves have come off the trees, clearing the gutters of a weekend is always a sensible precaution. Organising a garden tidy, with all equipment stored away for the winter. It probably only takes a few hours of your or a gardener's time, but makes such a difference for someone who is housebound, to look out on a tidy garden rather than the debris of summer through those winter months. Ordering in a delivery of fuel oil is a sensible thing to plan if not on the gas grid, particularly before the Christmas rush which seems to start in early December. Lastly, insulating draughty windows or doors, particularly ones near a favourite chair. Nice extras that will make someone feel special. There

could be a favourite overcoat, maybe a woollen one that could be taken in for a repair and maybe a dry clean. Sitting down together and drawing up a list of favourite cupboard treats for if the snow comes can be good fun. The supermarkets have a host of goodies in tins as Christmas approaches that will keep well, and if the snow never comes then opening boxes of biscuits in the spring is something to look forward to! Laying in a cold weather pack of a large torch, a large thermos flask, that can be used for soup and hot drinks, and a warm comfortable fleece blanket – easy to wash, and a great light throw over legs or shoulders. Lastly many people enjoy watching and feeding the birds through the winter months, so bird tables or even perspex bird feeders that attach to windows, can be delightful features outside a favourite room. And if you don’t know the neighbours, go and introduce yourself, and exchange phone numbers. You may find that they could do with some support too, or if not then they can step in to help your relative if the need arises. n If you would like to raise any issues for future columns or have any comments on this month’s piece, feel free to email me at richard.gould@ terrablu.co.uk www.terrablu.co.uk Managing homecare for you and yours.

SCHOOL OF GAMING

M

ost people imagine video gamers to be chubby teenagers, oblivious to the outside world and although this unhealthy kind of gaming does exist, sensible gaming has been proven to be both physically and mentally beneficial. Ollie Bray, the National Adviser for Emerging Technologies in Learning at Education Scotland, believes that gaming could even be beneficial in the school environment. The crux of his argument centres on the fact that teaching values should evolve with modern technology in order to engage with pupils. The theory

is that by introducing video games into the classroom, it will create an environment that children associate with fun and excitement. The resulting enthusiasm can then be utilised to obtain genuine learning results, changing the opinion of learning as a chore, which many students detest, to an enjoyable activity. n Whether you’re a pupil or a parent, we want to hear your opinions on this controversial topic. Please send all messages to editor@vinedigital. co.uk and we could publish your thoughts in next month’s magazine

Nick Chowdrey discusses the history and meaning of the unusual festival of Halloween and provides top tips on throwing the most horrifying Halloween house party

night of unusual paranormal activity, the hastening of lost souls from purgatory, a celebration of the saints, an excuse to eat a load of sweets, or a booze-up in a funny hat? The beauty of Halloween, and perhaps an explanation of its popularity, is that you can make of it what you want. This has much to do with the superstitious history of the celebration. The word derives from the Christian festival of All Hallows, which takes place on 1 November and is a time when souls in purgatory are thought to accept their judgement. Superstition developed that on All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) these lost souls would take their last chance to exact vengeance upon the living before departing the mortal plain, resulting in increased supernatural occurrences. As such, the practice of dressing up as a ghoul on Halloween is thought to be explained by a related practice performed on this day where believers would attempt to disguise themselves as spirits when out at night, in hope of warding off unearthly attackers. Furthermore, in the Middle Ages it is recorded that people began to go door to door on Halloween singing hymns and saying prayers for the dead, in return for coins or food. Combine this practice with the wearing of costumes and you arrive at the modern practice of trick-or-treat. The truth is, the significance behind the celebration is so blurred and distorted by now as to be almost 100 per cent meaningless – for most, it’s just a chance to dress up and have a good time. Here are some pro tips for terrifying friends, spooking suitors and generally throwing the most ghastly Halloween bash imaginable.

Realistic homemade fake blood It’s easy to buy fake blood in a bottle around Halloween, but it’s usually watery, overpriced and generally not that convincing. For a quick, easy and more gruesome alternative, try gently heating some red food dye and combining instant coffee granules. Allow to cool and you’ll have a scabby, glutinous, blood red gunk ready to smear and scare.

Vodka jelly body parts This has to be the ultimate idea for spooky Halloween accoutrements. Body part jelly moulds can be found in many online Halloween shops. Simply buy your favourite jelly mix, combine with 75 per cent water and 25 per cent vodka and add to the moulds to set. Make sure you add the vodka AFTER boiling the water, otherwise you could cause a fire hazard.

Eyeball hors d’oeuvre With these mozzarella and olive canapés your greedy guests eyeing up the buffet table will be surprised to see it staring straight back at them. For the iris, slice the end off a green olive and poke a hole through the top with a straw. For the pupil, do the same with a black olive, placing the slice cut by the straw in the hole of the iris olive.

Designed with you in mind Offset Architects were appointed to explore potential improvements in this dated detached house. Their suggestions were to retain, extend and fully refurbish the existing property, whilst making the most of the available land within the village boundary to provide some much needed additional family housing. Vine dropped in for a look

M

r Jarvis’s home is one of a pair that has been constructed to the front of the original property and was designed with attractive vernacular features, but also to be subtly different to meet the Otford Parish Council’s design guidance. Set back from the main road and with a selection of quality landscaping plants and materials to the boundary, the superbly finished properties by Portfolio Homes sit beautifully within their context. Mr Jarvis and his family moved into their open and light five-bedroom property at the beginning of last month. “I truly believe in using traditional construction methods with quality materials but I love the contemporary twist with the interiors of the house.” There were rejections to developing the land in the past but the properties now fit well within the location, thanks in part to Offset’s designs and they look very different to the typical new builds often developed. It is Offset’s remarkable abilities to combine traditional exterior design with modern contemporary interior features that make these properties truly spectacular. Stepping inside, you realise how big the space is, with clever open-plan design making the family room the heart of the home, with a kitchen, sofa and dining area. It is hard to believe that this space could be big enough for three parts of a house that usually take up three different rooms; however the bi-fold patio doors and a sky light automatically open up the space, bringing the outside in. Yet even with this huge space, there are secluded areas which the family can still retreat to, giving them peace and privacy. Throughout the property you can see the attention to detail, with the double doors leading into the family room and cleverly arranged stairs that maximise the space. It’s not a surprise that the family are delighted with their beautiful new home and can see themselves living here for the forseeable future.

Originally living in Sevenoaks, the family knew of the development before the construction of the house was finished and were aware of how hard it would be for the planning permission to be finalised. However, after an appeal the work of the two houses started, now receiving compliments from locals who originally disliked the concept.

The best part of the house, apart from the family room, is undoubtedly the bathroom: its gorgeous Japanese tiles cover the extent of the shower and are a feature of contemporary design.

The land these properties now sit on used to belong to Mr Knight, who lived in the previously dated property, Mayola, behind the new development. He was famous to the locals for his apples and had an orchard, which sat where Mr Jarvis’s house now does. In commemoration of the previous owner, the house is now called Knight's Orchard, a charming name for this endearing home.

Sony KDL22EX553BU

These noise-isolating, in-ear canal headphones from audio giants Creative strike the perfect balance between price and performance. The headphones have an attractively simple design, a 1.2m cable and come packaged with three different-sized ear buds, meaning you’re bound to find the right fit for you. The in-ear design delivers two functions: almost entirely isolating exterior noise and also providing an incredible bass boost. 9mm Neodymium magnet drivers deal exceptionally well with the higher end of the audio spectrum, making for an incomparable listening experience.

This enigmatically named smart TV is an excellent addition to any living room, kitchen or bedroom. With a beautiful Edge LED 22" HD-ready screen and built-in Freeview HD, it’s the perfect choice for enjoying high quality, high resolution viewing without breaking the bank. The TV also has wireless and wired connection to the internet and the Sony Entertainment Network gives you access to streaming HD movies, millions of songs, your favourite TV channels, a web browser and apps like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Skype and more.

PROS: Excellent bass and noise isolation APPROX

£8

CONS: Some people just don’t like sticking things in their ears!

PROS: Appealing, tilting screen and unparalleled connectivity CONS: Viewing angles and sound aren’t brilliant RECOMMENDED FOR: Web-savvy personal viewing

RECOMMENDED FOR: Commuters wanting to cancel out the racket of noisy trains

Samsung NC110 APPROX

This 10.1” netbook was released this spring and has held the crown of best value portable PC throughout the summer. It comes with everything you’d expect – genuine Windows 7, the latest 1.6ghz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Most netbooks at the moment are pretty much this exact spec. So what makes this one the best? Well, not only is the battery life absolutely huge (10.7 hours!) but it’s also the cheapest, lightest and (arguably) most attractive machine in its spec.

£195

PROS: Excellent performance and build quality for low price CONS: Stuffed with useless Samsung software, poor screen adjustability RECOMMENDED FOR: Media addict on the go

Panasonic V100 APPROX

£220

This handy, hand-held camcorder delivers full HD 1920 x 1080 video, as well as a host of other useful features, at an exceptional price. At around 11x6x5cm and weighing just under 200g, the camcorder has a lightweight and compact design, making it portable and easy to use. But don’t be fooled by its size, with a 45x intelligent zoom and around 165 minutes of continuous shooting, its technical specs are hefty enough for any intermediate film maker. On top of this, the flexible and inexpensive SD format is used a storage, which gives it an edge over some other competitors. PROS: Ultra-portable, easy and adaptive to use CONS: Quality of still pictures is fairly poor RECOMMENDED FOR: Casual film makers

REAP ROTTEN REWARDS

T

Summer’s coming to an end all too soon and in just a couple of months’ time the leaves will be turning and fluttering beautifully to the ground… making a mess in your garden and driveway

his is a noticeable problem in an area like Sevenoaks, which boasts many leafy deciduous trees, all adding to the deluge of browny orange litter in the autumn months. But there is a way to make the most out of this bad situation. When clearing away dead leaves, most people will fill up green bin bags provided by the council and have

them collected. When these bags are collected, they get taken away to a large landfill site and composted – out of sight, out of mind. This is all well and good, but you may not realise that you’ve just thrown away some excellent free fertilizer. If you instead decided to compost those leaves at home, in just a few months’ time you’d have created a free, nutrient-rich means to improve your garden’s health. The benefits of this are twofold. Firstly, when composting is done en masse (like at a landfill), air cannot reach all the waste, creating large amounts of the harmful greenhouse gas, methane. Secondly, the compost you produce from the environment around you is the best source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for your garden and will also improve the pH balance of your soil. So, not only will you be doing your bit for the environment, but you’ll reap the rewards of a cheap and amazingly effective way to improve the growing conditions in your own back yard. Best of all – it’s so easy to get started! All you need to do is get your hands on a composting bin – available from local home & garden stores – and start filling it up.

Did you know? You can compost your food waste too. Egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags and potato skins all add huge amounts of nutrients.
