EMBELLISHMENTS This season’s jewelry trends are all about unleashing the ornate rebel in you. Designers draped their models in gothic styles with a historical flare during this season’s New York Fashion Week. By pulling inspiration from lavish medieval eras, you can be sure to nail this fall’s look.

facial finery

Piercings are back and more high fashion than ever. Models walking in NYFW for designers like Givenchy were adorned with embellished faces. As far as street style goes, the septum ring is a home run. If you can’t commit to the real thing, there is always the option of a fake clip on, which looks so realistic that no one will see the difference.

choke hold charmers

The 90’s choker craze has been redefined and is making a big statement - literally. Designers like Emilio Pucci, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs graced the runway with newly inspired chokers. This year, chokers have more of a thick collared style, ranging from leather to gold chains.

bold baroque

We all know the power a statement necklace has over an outfit. This season, the Renaissance Era has inspired big name designers like Gucci and Chanel. Trendsetters are enthralled with large pieces dramatically architected in gems. You can accomplish this look with one large necklace or by layering multiple jeweled chains.

adorn alone

A stand-alone statement earring will surely allow you to stand out this season. Show the world a fierce, independent look that proves that not everything needs a pair. Follow designs from Christian Dior and Valentino by rocking a bold earring on only one ear. you can be my

it girl Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn have the power to command our attention solely by their stunning presence. They schmooze on the weekends with Karl Lagerfeld and Olivier Rousteing, and can be caught front row at any (and every) Taylor Swift concert. These girls are models by profession but “it girls” by nature. They possess poise, intelligence and a style all their own that has the world crushing hard. Brush up on the simplistic approach to Kendall’s look and the street style inspiration of Gigi’s wardrobe to channel your inner “it-girl” everywhere from class to a night out.

cold fox. She is usually seen wearing waistflattering dresses, cropped tops, flirty skirts and flared pants. Get Emily’s look by combining a feminine dress with a pair of pointed toe ankle boots for class, or a pair of wide-legged pants and a cropped top for a night out.

GIGI HADID

If you’re a fan of shameless reality television, you have probably seen blonde bombshell, Gigi Hadid, on the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alongside her famous mother, former supermodel Yolanda Foster. Gigi has starred in many campaigns, such as becoming the Guess Girl for the iconic brand’s 2012 campaign. She was also named one of twelve “rookies” in a 2014 issue of Sports Illustrated. Gigi makes headlines with her natural, off-duty street style. As a competitive horseback rider and captain of her high school volleyball team, this current supermodel is known for her stylish take on athletic wear. Gigi’s essential look includes a jean jacket or structured blazer worn over a fitted tank top, which is then paired with boyfriend jeans or tapered joggers. She usually dresses the look down with a pair of Nike’s or motorcycle boots. Gigi’s sporty-casual look completely transforms from day to night with jumpsuits and formfitting dresses complimented by strappy pumps and a clutch.

KENDALL JENNER

While you may know Kendall from her family’s modest empire and trivial reality show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” she has solidified her own career through hard work and a killer wardrobe. Kendall’s style is ideal for the everyday girl who wants to feel comfortable and be sexy; it is the epitome of simplistic class. You often see Kendall sporting fitted denim, ripped or studded, a basic, relaxed t-shirt and a pair of high-heeled booties. At night, Kendall sticks with a sleek pair of leather pants, a fitted silk blouse, a structured jacket and a staple pair of heeled boots. The key to achieving Kendall’s style is to remain casual, neutral and tailored.

EMILY RATAJKOWSKI

Back in 2013, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” music video went viral. Accumulating more than 73 million YouTube views, neither Pharrell nor the catchy beat were likely the cause of this popularity. One girl in particular: Emily Ratajkowksi, captured the audience’s attention. Emily starred in the video, sporting a dazzling, red pouty lip and contagious energy, proving there is nothing wrong with women celebrating their bodies. Since the video release, Emily has had major success in modeling, acting and especially fashion. Emily’s style is vintage-inspired with a modern twist - think the Reformation and stone-

JOURDAN DUNN

British beauty, Jourdan Dunn, came to the scene at age 16, walking in shows during New York Fashion Week for huge brands including Marc Jacobs and Polo Ralph Lauren. Since her start, Jourdan has appeared in numerous campaigns for Vogue, Teen Vogue and Elle. She has also been awarded several “model of the year” titles by Harper’s Bazaar as well as the British Fashion Awards. When she’s not starring in music videos for Beyoncé, she’s mastering street style with her sleek take on urban streetwear. Jourdan is frequently spotted in more cutting edge brands like Alexander Wang and Balmain, wearing high top sneakers, oversized motorcycle jackets, liquid leggings and embellished sweatshirts topped off with knit beanies. To obtain Jourdan’s look for a night out, swap the sweatshirt for a loose-fitting graphic tee, body-hugging pencil skirt and pointy toe stilettos. going goth

Black has never looked better.

Black is back—and with a vengeance. Designer Alexander Wang satisfied the demands of his followers, but shocked fashion critics by showcasing an all-black collection for autumn/winter 2015. The dark shade can be considered taboo for runway photos as it steers in the direction of looking monotonous and one dimensional. However, Wang infused different textures and layers in his collection, bringing liveliness to an otherwise sober color. While designer powerhouses Givenchy and Giles paid homage to the edgy gothic culture by presenting black mesh accented dresses and patent leather blazers, Wang certainly claimed the front line in goth fashion. Ever the risk taker, Wang reinvented the classic hue by embracing the gothic attitude in the form of leather, velvet, studs and lace-up platforms. Splashes of ethereal colors and delicate features were nowhere to be found as more brooding, androgynous silhouettes dominated Wang’s runway show. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Marilyn Manson and KISS (though with much less tongue), head-to-toe black ensembles paired with chain accessories, dark makeup and slick hair created an edgy aesthetic that even Edward Scissorhands would envy. Don’t be intimidated by the spikes and studs; it’s your turn to take a page out of Wang’s book. Start small and couple your favorite band t-shirt with a black, oversized blazer for a masculine touch. Give your outfit some shape by adding a pair of distressed skinny jeans and top it off with ankle boots and silver jewelry. Also, try combining a leather vest with a velvet, turtleneck dress and Doc Martens for a more feminine look with an essence of goth. Black has never looked better with a bit of gothic inspiration. College is the coveted time of cramped spaces. However, the amount of stuff that students need to store is seemingly endless. When everything must be compact, shoving shoes under the bed and sweaters onto the shelf becomes an art. Since space is so precious, taking a step back can be the perfect way to see what items are absolute necessities in your wardrobe. Capsule wardrobes are the solution to this clothing Catch-22. Capsule wardrobes consist of clothes that all work together, creating a minimalist approach to dressing. If every piece works with multiple garments in your closet, it makes getting ready for class at 8:00 a.m. easier than ever before. The first step to creating a cohesive closet is deciding which pieces can be parted with and which pieces need to stay. Yes, that shirt is probably cute but how practical is it? A semi-sheer, sparkly number can only survive so many Friday nights despite how fabulous it looks in your Instagram posts. If a piece is exclusive to one outfit, then it is not compatible to a minimalist wardrobe. Practicality is important in capsule wardrobes, but maintaining one’s personal aesthetic is equally as crucial. The items of clothing that make up a streamlined closet should be fashion essentials. These pieces are not going out of style by next year, so spending a little more money is beneficial in the long run. While neutrals are perfect in a minimalist color palette, vibrant colors and loud patterns are certainly not off limits. Incorporating bold and trendy accessories simplifies your outfit adjustments throughout the seasons without breaking the bank. The square footage of a closet does not determine the amount of style someone possesses. A cramped, shared space can house the pieces that make up a chic, minimalist wardrobe; it all depends on what’s on the hangers.

winter coat revamp After months of blistering heat, the cold weather season has finally hit, bringing along the thrill of breaking out our autumn and winter wardrobes. Excitement over the new seasons is often short-lived because year after year we seem to forget that our goto outerwear quickly becomes our frenemy. As college students, our coats become the only aspect of our personal style that the outside world sees during fall and winter. Chances are, by the end of these seasons, most of us never want to look at our puffy parkas again. So, consider it an extension of your persona when choosing the perfect piece of outerwear this year.

the bomber

For many, the bomber jacket may conjure images of Tom Cruise in Top Gun - but this season, the quilted bomber jacket is a staple for autumn and winter wardrobes. A revamped feminine silhouette puts this jacket on the crossroads of edgy and functional. The bomber jacket is best paired with suede over-the-knee boots and an oversized knit beanie.

the duster

Duster has become the new “it word for designers and street style bloggers alike. From cardigans to blouses, we have seen this style incorporated into every piece of clothing imaginable, but the duster coat is arguably the best variation yet. This coat can look glamorous for a night out, or fashion forward when worn with ripped jeans and open-toed mules.

fancy fur

Luxury has met versatility, at last, as fur and fur-trimmed coats are making a major statement on the high-fashion circuit. The best and brightest in fashion can be seen sporting furs in a variety of colors, patterns and lengths. But luckily, you don’t have to break the bank or be a PETA activist to know that faux fur is the way to go. Make a fur coat campus compatible by layering it over a graphic tee, finishing off your look with a pair of ankle boots.

boyfriend leather

Transitioning your wardrobe from fall to winter is all about leather. Try out a new classic, like boyfriend leather, as you incorporate this trend into your closet. Whether you’re taken or single, a boyfriend style leather jacket is a closet must-have this season. Boyfriend leather is comfortable and moveable. For a balanced look, style this jacket with a fitted top and your favorite pair of skinny jeans.

the art of being a man

Respected. Brave. Honest. Kind. Independent. Competitive. In the words of society, these are characteristics of how men should act. But unfortunately, there is no description guiding us on how to look good while being men. When it comes to fashion, almost nothing remains constant except change itself. However, the art of men’s style stays true to its handsomely bold appeal. Here, alum Bryan Neville presents himself to the world, taking careful consideration. The same attentive thought is needed for choosing a practical, layered and, of course, manly wardrobe. WORDS & STYLE: Alec Winter PHOTOS: Kamil Derezinski MODEL: Bryan Neville

6 ways to step up your suit game When it comes to suits, blue is certainly the new black. Blue is one of the most versatile colors and can be worn at the office, out on the town, in the hot summers and even in Michigan’s notoriously cold winters. However, spicing up your suit game can be a challenge. These six simple tips will allow you to effortlessly navigate your choice and set you onto a path of elegance and esteemed regard.

1

2

3

Blue does not necessarily have to mean navy. A light blue suit can be just as elegant, provided you don’t go too far in either direction. When it comes to your shirt and tie combination, you don’t have to play it safe. Mix your solids, stripes, dots, paisleys and other patterns to create unique looks and utilize your entire wardrobe. You can never go wrong with black shoes, but they can be predictable. Step up your look with some oxfords or wingtips.

4 5 6

Invest in a suit that fits properly at every corner and edge of your body. See a tailor to get your perfect fit. The solid pocket square is like George Clooney; a classic fit, while patterns are more of a Johnny Depp; bold and unexpected. Always wear a belt or suspenders, but never the two together. Both look good, just ask yourself what kind of statement you want to make.

A great pair of jeans and a plain white T-shirt creates a blank canvas just waiting to be customized. It doesn’t matter if your style is more preppy or urban - integrating key accessories can help showcase your personality. If you are more interested in a classic preppy look, throwing on a cardigan or tailored pea coat will help create the perfect statement. Dark jeans are also a dynamic pick for this look because they are slimming and coordinate well with a pair of leather boots or chukkas. Complete this look with your favorite watch or belt. If you prefer a more urban or street style aesthetic, selecting a good pair of distressed jeans can be a great place to start. Purposely distressed jeans were once considered to be acceptable for women exclusively, but not anymore. Combine your ripped jeans with a pair of standout sneakers or give this look a vintage vibe by adding a pair of beat-up moto boots. Putting together an outfit that leaves a great first impression is easy - it’s all about wearing what makes you the most comfortable and reflects your personal style.

to keep you cool

When it comes to Michigan winters, every guy knows the importance of a fashionable yet durable jacket. It is your first line of defense against the chilling temperatures and it is also the first thing people see on those long campus walks.

Bomber Jacket / Bomber jackets are not necessarily a strong defense during the dead of winter, but they are an ideal option to wear before the lowest temperatures set in. Bomber

jackets are usually made with a thin material, such as leather. Pairing a stocking cap or a warm wool scarf with your jacket will give you the perfect look for windy fall days.

Peacoat /

Peacoats are a classy jacket usually made of a thick material, which makes them the perfect choice for winter wear. Sporting front facing buttons, peacoats have a distinct look that can be dressed up or down for either a business or a

casual look. Wear this coat with a preppy sweater underneath or give your look a little bit of a flare with a plaid scarf to contrast the solid color of the coat.

Overcoat / These jackets are fitting for all seasons except summer. Your overcoat can be worn opened or fastened; both styles exude a strong sense of professionalism. If you pair your overcoat with a simple scarf to complement the colors, you will be sure to turn heads.

What’s better than looking good and feeling good? Not too much. Society has suggested that baggy sweats and plain t-shirts don’t qualify as “socially acceptable” but now there is a fashionable way to make loungewear work. This upcoming season, loungewear has adapted from an ill ensemble to stylish, fitted joggers and warm vests. The wardrobes of men all over campus are thriving with this new wardrobe must-have. Putting together the perfect loungewear outfit allows you to come off as cool, collected

and casual all at the same time. This fitted look is versatile and appropriate for almost any occasion. Not to mention, there’s minimal effort required. This look works for all men because it can be paired with high tops or low tops and can be personalized with an urban shirt. Whether you are going to class, running errands or grabbing a quick bite to eat, fitted joggers will give you a comfortable and fashionable look during the brisk seasons.

style tips from her to you

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Be yourself Your personal style is the ultimate form of selfexpression. Whatever you decide to wear should be a true representation of who you are. The first rule of style is to always wear what you feel your best in and what makes you feel like you. A popular look, such as khaki shorts paired with Sperry Top-Siders, may not be your thing and that’s okay. Don’t ever feel pressured to wear something just because other people are wearing it.

02 03

01

WORDS: AMBER MASSEY

Comfort and style can coexist We all know how big MSU’s campus is, and how important it is to feel comfortable on your long treks to class. Remember that it is possible to combine comfort and style within your daily wardrobe. Instead of going for a baggy, loose-fitting pair of Spartan sweatpants, try tailoring your look with a sleek pair of joggers.

The fit is key Dressing for your body shape is extremely important. You do not want your ultra skinny jeans squeezing you in all the wrong places, or an oversized t-shirt completely hiding your body. The perfect fit is not only comfortable, but it is also very appealing as well.

Slowly step away from the cargo shorts The boxy fit of cargo shorts is not flattering on anyone. The shape of this cut has the tendency to bulge. It is best to simply avoid this style all together.

030

04

Plain t-shirts are your friend With a million different styles, fabrics, colors and shapes to choose from, a plain t-shirt can serve as a building block of any outfit. Whether you are looking to dress fancy or casual, plain T-shirts create a blank canvas that can be dressed up or dressed down.

06 07

05

Shoes make the man Just like your clothing, what you choose to put on your feet says a lot about your personality. A guy wearing Sperry Top-Siders may be categorized as preppy, whereas a guy wearing Converse sneakers could be considered more relaxed or laid back.

Invest in good denim Jeans are possibly the most reliable and essential piece in your entire wardrobe. If you buy the right pair, they could last a lifetime. Try to refrain from purchasing a pair of jeans simply because of the low price. Instead, focus on the quality. From the fabric, to the cut, to the leg shape, there is an art behind buying quality denim and there’s nothing sexier than a guy in a great pair of jeans.

Feeding into trends is a waste of time and money We all have those moments where we consider trying a new brand just because everyone has it. Those moments must be stopped. While trends greatly influence the fashion world, they are short lived by nature. Carefully select a few trendy pieces for your wardrobe to avoid investing a great deal of time and money into a fad that will eventually fade.

09 10

08

Experiment Never be afraid to switch things up a bit. It is okay to go outside your comfort zone and wear something that is completely opposite of your daily style. After all, college is the perfect time to experiment.

Constantly evolve your image College is a time of growth, so let your style flourish with you. What you wear serves as a form of communication. Your wardrobe is a way of saying who you are without having to speak. It is a powerful statement that deserves attention. Your statement should reflect how you would like to be seen by the world.

turn down for what hangover edition

In college you live for those late nights that turn into early mornings; however, it is important not to look or feel like the previous night when you start a new day. Let’s face it, you gave your body the short end of the stick by “turning up” until the wee hours of the night. The least you can do is make it up to your body by giving yourself proper revitalization by following these tips.

1 2 3 4

Normally, you should stick to fruits and vegetables, but before drinking, cheat. Use this as a cheat day to eat the greasiest food possible so that the alcohol will take longer to absorb. Eat a wholesome breakfast the morning after. Although you may not want to see food, eat anyway. This will help in the long run. Apply your rejuvenating beauty products to allow your skin to come alive again. Try energizing and exfoliating face masks to eliminate the look and feel of the night before. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolytes. Grab a sports drink, like Gatorade. This is going to quench your thirst and almost instantly bring you back to life.

Allow yourself to rest and make time for a nap, even if you can only close your eyes for 10 minutes. Lack of rest makes the hangover worse. Detox, detox and detox. Clean yourself out. Try a detox tea or a natural supplement. It is important to rid yourself of all of the toxins and greasy foods from the night before. This will be helpful in preparation for the days to come. Next time you decide to “turn up,” be sure to follow these tips that will surely nurse your body back to health.

However, what they don’t immediately think about are the benefits of coconut oil and the several ways that it can be used in a beauty routine. Coconut oil is an efficient and inexpensive product that helps you maintain all of your best features in a natural way. WORDS: Jessica Hanna PHOTOS: Brighid Noone MODEL: Emily Brook

makeup remover

Coconut oil is excellent for removing all your makeup, even waterproof mascara. Simply scoop a small amount of coconut oil into your hands and warm it by rubbing them together. Apply the coconut oil all over your face, gently scrubbing in small, circular motions. While coconut oil is not harmful to your eyes, maintain caution by keeping them closed. Once you are done rubbing in the coconut oil, splash your face with water and dry with a towel.

tame frizz

Have you ever had the perfect hair day ruined by the massive amount of frizz on your head? Well, here is the perfect solution: take a small amount of coconut oil, warm it up in your hands, and finger comb it through your hair. Your frizz will instantly disappear.

makeup brush cleanser

If you don’t want to buy that overpriced makeup brush shampoo, there is a cheap, homemade solution. Just melt a generous scoop of coconut oil in a bowl or cup. Then dip your dirty, makeupfilled brushes in the liquid. After removing them from the oil, swirl your brushes on a piece of paper towel or a clean washcloth. Finally, rinse your brushes with warm water and let them dry.

teeth whitener

This technique is used by so many people that it even has a name. “Oil Pulling” is the newest trick when it comes to brightening your smile. Simply swish a spoonful of melted coconut oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes and say hello to your new pearly whites.

leave-in conditioner

In the fall and winter months, your luscious locks can easily dry out and split at the ends. In order to keep your hair healthy and hydrated, mix three tablespoons of melted coconut oil with water in a spray bottle. Shake the concoction and spray it on top of your dry or dampened hair.

under eye cream

Let’s face it, as college students, we don’t get much sleep. Our lives consist of endless nights and a whole lot of Netflix. To help tame your dark circles, dab a small amount of coconut oil under your eyes. It will make your bottom lids soft and wrinkle -free.

lip balm/moisturizer

Coconut oil provides a simple way to avoid dry, cracked skin and lips during fall and winter. Just smooth a little over your lips and body to keep them moisturized. Coconut oil works wonders for cracked feet and dry hands and cuticles.

body scrub

It is essential to exfoliate at least once a week to get rid of dead skin and keep your body glowing. In order to concoct a homemade body scrub, all you need is ½ cup of coconut oil and ¼ cup of granulated sugar. Step 1: Mix the sugar and oil in a bowl Step 2: Rub the scrub all over your body and rinse Step 3: Dry off and store your scrub in an airtight container

two to three minutes before shaving Step 3: Shave away Step 4: Store any remaining cream in an airtight container

highlighter

Dab a bit of coconut oil on your cheekbones, along the bridge of your nose and on your cupid’s bow for a subtly stunning highlight. After all, strobing is the new contouring. Please beware that this trick may not be effective for naturally oily skin.

shaving cream

Why spend money on shaving cream when you can make it yourself? Coconut oil is a natural product that helps moisturize the skin. The oil in the cream helps to prevent razor burn as well as skin irritation. All you need is ¼ cup of coconut oil and ¼ cup of aloe vera or conditioner. Step 1: Melt the coconut oil and mix it with the aloe or conditioner Step 2: Let the cream sit on your skin for

Out with the bright and in with the bold. Fall revolves around rich shades of plum and red. Don’t be afraid to try out a new look consisting of natural eyes and dark lips to top it off. When wearing a darker lip, don’t go too heavy on the eyes. For a classic daytime look, stick with neutral shades. Use nude shadows and a simple liner to keep the focus on the bold lips. Going out to your favorite nightspot? Bring out the smoky eye and pair it with a nice fall lip inspired color for a dramatic appearance. You don’t have to stick to just one shade of lipstick this season. To create unique fall colors, mix your lipsticks together to get just the right shade to match the change of the seasons. Plus, this will give you more bang for your buck in the

long-term. For the three looks pictured above, there are at least two lipsticks used for each. For the center look, a nude lip color was used along with two colors darker than the model’s skin. The nude color was kept around the outside of the lips and blended into the center. Then, a pinkish mauve shade was placed the on the middle of the lips and blended outside to the edges. The same technique was utilized for the purple and red looks. Using a darker shade of purple or red and one shade lighter in the middle will give your lips a beautiful effect and emphasizes the rich color of the lipstick drastically.

illuminate your natural beauty

Strobing is the hottest new technique in the beauty industry. It is the exact opposite of contouring, but it creates a similar effect. Contouring contrasts light and dark shades to achieve a bright and structured complexion. Strobing is an easier way of attaining this look that achieves the same results without having to worry about mixing the right tones, resulting in a dewy and satisfying glow. There are a few easy steps you need to follow in order to achieve the perfect strobing makeup. First, buy a liquid foundation and liquid illuminator. Mix the two products together and apply them to your face, just like you would normally apply foundation. Then, use concealer to highlight underneath your eyes and blend with a beauty blender.

Now the strobing can take place. It is highly recommended that you purchase Melon Pigment by MAC and a blurring brush to achieve the intended look. Use your blurring brush to spread pigment along your cheekbones. Next, place the pigment on the bridge of your nose and the center of your forehead. Finally, sweep the pigment along your cupid’s bow. After following these steps, you will have successfully “strobed” your face. Strobing is an amazing technique that is very easy to accomplish, especially for those who don’t typically wear makeup. It is simply meant to give your face a fresh and desirable shine that will illuminate your face as soon as the sun hits it.

Ditch the straightener, braid it up – sleep with your hair in braids. Remove the braids in the morning and wake up with loose, crimpy waves. In addition, you can use this time to treat yourself. If you add oil to your hair before you braid it, you can prevent damage and split ends. Accessorize – wear braids as intricate accessories. Working a side braid into the front section of your hair can easily take your look from frumpy to fabulous in an effortless and time-efficient manner. Dry shampoo – For the mornings when you don’t have time to shower, dry shampoo will be your best friend. Spray the product directly at your roots and rub it in. This product instantly takes away grease, giving your hair a fresh look.

quick fixes for your 8am

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Most college students have a rough morning here or there. Whether you sleep through your alarms or press the snooze button too many times, this can lead to a morning of panic where you only have a few minutes to get ready. Don’t worry, you can still put together a great look with a few tips that will help you speed up your routine and get you out the door quickly. Skip foundation – Go for a moisturizer that evens out skin tone. Emphasize your complexion by applying tinted moisturizer with SPF. Ditch the coffee – Add glow to your cheekbones and the inner corners of your eyes with highlighter. You will look awake and alert in just a few seconds. Brows on fleek – Brown mascara usually gives your face a softer and more natural look. It has a lighter contrast compared to plain black. These softer tones enable you to use mascara as a brow gel. Adding this color will save you time when you don’t want to fill in your brows.

outfit

Be prepared – Choosing your outfit the night before as well as keeping a basic, preplanned outfit in the back of your closet for emergencies ensures a stylish look when you are rushed. Be comfy – Make your workout clothes trendy. Try pairing your comfy leggings and yoga pants with a denim jacket or vest, or your favorite zip-up hoodie with a spunky scarf. These elements will oppose the expected look of your workout wear in a fashionably pleasing way. Make a statement – Amp up your simple outfit by incorporating a bold garment or accessory. A casual t-shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse can be pulled together fast by adding a jacket, cuff or statement necklace.

homemade face masks

During the winter months, the cold weather takes a toll on our skin, leaving it dry and flaky. One of the best, and most inexpensive, ways to leave the skin glowing and radiant is by making organic face masks. Here are three homemade masks that can be created by using ingredients from a local grocery store, or almost any cafeteria on Michigan State’s campus. WORDS: Jazmyn Ewing PHOTO: Sheryl Levitt

create your perfect workspace If the thoughts of bookshelves that climb to the ceiling and endless rows of cubicles make you cringe, then studying at the library is probably something you absolutely dread. Of course it is a good place to study, but it is no one’s ideal work environment. The chairs and desks are never comfortable, and no matter how hard you try to block out your surroundings, you always end up people watching. Let’s face it, your “productive library experience” never turns out quite like you imagine. Wouldn’t it be just peachy to have an ideal workspace right where you live? Here are some creative tips to help perfect your workspace at home. 1. Organize: Make sure your workspace is not cluttered. There is nothing worse than being overwhelmed by random pieces of paper and sticky notes all over the place. Organize your thoughts, or anything you need to keep track of, with cork boards or file folders. 2. Decorate: You may want to study in a place that inspires you. But at the same time,

you don’t want your space to be distracting or overwhelming. Invest in a small chalkboard or use chalkboard paint to create a design that can also be used as a place to jot down thoughts. Also, scented candles can be a great way to spark ideas and relax the atmosphere. 3. Nook Yourself: Being in your room with all of your things and a million ways to get distracted is always difficult. Turn your desk at an angle that separates you from everything else in the room. You can even try putting up a changing screen to completely isolate yourself. These things ultimately improve your productivity by enclosing your space and preventing peripheral distractions. These tips will help you create an ideal, accessible workspace, because who wouldn’t like to study a few inches away of a fridge full of food, wearing warm fuzzy socks? detoxing your life A guide to de-stress and simplify it all WORDS: Olivia Bennett PHOTO: Margaux Forster MODEL: Lauren Oldenburg

Ah, the persistent stress of college life. Trying to fit in the time to sleep, shower, work, go to class, exercise and eat can be a hassle. However, despite these stresses, there are ways to detoxify nearly all areas of your life.

product detox

Make “spring cleaning” more of a monthly and widespread ritual. Too many material possessions, whether it be shoes or samples of eyeshadow, complicate day-to-day life. Analyze how frequently and how much attention you give these things. Can’t remember the last time you wore that old pair of jeans? Throw them out. Ask yourself if that item will matter in a year; this is a helpful guide in determining what to hang on to.

time detox

Improve your focus and success at school and work by filling your time with necessary things, which may include screen time. Relaxing and watching Netflix after a day of classes is a good stress-reliever, but not if you do it everyday. A steady influx of media and TV changes your values and dominates your life, even if you don’t realize it. Taking too much time out of your day to watch Netflix and avoid homework has a heavy buildup when it comes time to study. School should come as your first priority, so limit yourself to just one episode a day.

physical detox

In the simplest terms, avoiding trans-fat, refined grains, high-fructose corn syrup and too much sodium will improve your energy level, helping you get more out of your day with a better attitude. Give yourself time to exercise, meditate or do yoga everyday. Drink lots of water — at least half of your body weight in ounces — to minimize stress and help your body stay hydrated.

winter wardrobe myth buster

WORDS & STYLE: Taylor Neverman PHOTOS: Margaux Forster MODEL: Erika Smith Besides walking across campus in subzero temperatures as the snow ruins your favorite pair of suede boots, a big problem during the winter is finding the perfect balance between a warm, comfortable and fashionable wardrobe. When layers of clothes become a necessity and color palettes seem to lose their glow, it can be difficult to reflect your own style while adequately dressing for the weather. But, you don’t have to let the cold weather determine the fate of your outfits. Here are some objections to the most infamous winter myths. These tips will make the transition from fall to winter easier on both you and your closet.

YOU CAN’T BE WARM AND CUTE WHILE GOING OUT. Winter is the time of the year that conflicts the most with nightlife fashion trends. The choice between warmth or style is always difficult. Thankfully, the newest winter wear trends are introducing the best of both worlds. Nineties style is back and making it easier to stay warm on a night out with friends. Wear your coziest flannel or your favorite leather jacket while walking to the bar, or simply out to your Uber. Then, effortlessly tie it around your waist once you have arrived at your destination. This saves you money on coat check, and the stress of leaving your jacket alone. Layers also help fight off the brutal cold. A new trend this fall and winter is layering different textures in order to create a modern, stylish outfit. This type of layering means pairing a black skirt with tights and a textured shirt, and completing the look with a comfy cardigan. This styling trick may also mean piecing together your favorite pair of jeans, a silk top and a floor length kimono for an ensemble suitable for day or night.

YOU SHOULD WEAR DARK COLORS IN THE FALL AND WINTER. Break the mold of transitioning from bright colors in the spring and summer to dark colors in the fall and winter by incorporating vibrant touches into your outfit. With so many layering options, mixing and matching your colorful garments with neutral pieces is a dynamic way to liven up your wardrobe.

BEING A SPARTAN IS MORE THAN

just a name that describes the college you attend or attended. Being a Spartan means joining a community that will become a second family. Just like family, there are ups and downs; but no matter what, a strong family always lifts you up and supports you. We would like to recognize a member of the Spartan family that has not only lifted up and supported so many of his fellow Spartans, but has supported members of other communities as well. There is a strong lineage of leadership that is associated with titles such as student liaison for the MSU Board of Trustees, or representative for the Student Health Advisory Council. Brian Batayah is this leader. He is a Spartan that has made an impactful difference on MSU’s campus by dedicating countless hours of his

time to charitable organizations located across the country and doing all that he can to help people in need. Recently, Brian spent a week volunteering as an intern at a South African organization called Global Youth for Education and Change. He worked with youth affected by HIV and AIDS in Zonkizizwe, which is a township created by apartheid in post-apartheid South Africa. During his time with the organization, Batayah also directed community health science projects to help address multiple health issues plaguing the country. “Living in Zonkizizwe and seeing what life was like day to day really helped me to understand the issues that the youth faces. I consider the people I worked with to be family and still keep in touch with them, said Batayah.

Batayah formed special relationships with the members in Zonkizizwe. His determination and care for others helped spread awareness, educate people about health issues affecting the community and improve the individual lives of each child, parent and friend in the community. Batayahis also involved with the Bus Core - Students Today Leaders Forever Pay it Forward Tour, where he led a trip of 45 students to serve multiple communities across the country and spoke with communities about service and social justice. Batayah has planned, organized and followed through on projects that have stimulated conversations on a variety of topics that bolster community awareness on local issues and problems that need to both be addressed. In order to continue his

mission of helping individuals recognize the power of his or her own voice, Batayah is the Director of the Speakers Committee for TEDxMSU and was a key component in bringing TEDx to MSU. He recruits speakers and reaches out to communities in order to find insightful speakers for the events. Batayah works to put every part of the vision for the event into action and makes sure everything is prepared so that events run smoothly. Batayah has done an immense amount of work, making his Spartan family proud. Whether it is his volunteer work across the world or his leadership on campus. It is his admirable efforts that have given him the recognition of being a part of the Spartan Spotlight, and he plans on continuing this hard work in the future.

Step out of reality and into a whimsical new world that combines tasty treats with an atmosphere signature to decadent, old-time candy shops. Velvet A Candy Store is a gourmet candy, cupcake and ice cream shop that recently opened in East Lansing, offering nearly every delicious treat you can imagine. Unsurprisingly, this gem is quickly becoming the number one hangout for all local sweet tooths. Before Velvet A Candy Store graced MSU’s campus, the owners, Trisha and Erik Berakovich, successfully operated a candy store on Mackinac Island for two years. Erik is an alumni of MSU; therefore, coming to the East Lansing area was a natural choice for these candy enthusiasts. Trisha and Erik have made Velvet A Candy Store into another world for students and locals to escape the everyday realities. With a bit of retro design inspiration from Mackinac Island as well as their own personal love for the color purple, this quaint shop is the perfect haven to grab a coffee and do some homework or spend time with friends and enjoy one of the many delights they serve. A unique element of this shop is that everything is original and personal to the owners. Trisha is the creative mind behind the delicious recipes and decorative ambiance, and Erik helps bring them to life. From cookies and cream and toasted coconut to royal vanilla and peanut butter, every piece of fudge is carefully prepared.
