Dear Reader,

here’s sunshine on every page of our new edition of friends. We plan on enjoying the sunniest time of the year with friends and family, so we’ve packed every article full of new ideas for the home, delicious recipes and everything that makes life a little sweeter. This year, we’re off to an island, spending the holidays in Majorca, where we enjoy wonderful days with the Oliver Moragues family on their breathtaking wine-growing estate. A beautifully authentic and lovingly restored haven of tranquillity with views over the sun-drenched vineyards. Here, young and old live in complete harmony with nature, quietly upholding the traditions that have shaped life for generations: winegrowing, family and a generous helping of joie de vivre. When it comes to summer cooking at home, it’s all about light, healthy dishes. Not an ounce too much of fat and power packed with vitamins. Even celebrity chef Steffen Henssler can’t resist them. We chatted to him about his seasonal favourites. We also introduce you to the outstanding creative members of the Villeroy and von Boch families. Each generation continues to

AS THE LOCALS SAY: Start the day with a cheerful Sbah Alcher, which means ‘Good morning’.

GOOD MORNING! Wake up in Marrakesh or Paris!

The lively hustle and bustle of the spice traders in the markets of Marrakesh’s winding Medina district, or a leisurely stroll through romantic, bohemian Montmarte in Paris: the quickest and prettiest short breaks can now begin at home. Be inspired by two of the most beautiful and exhilarating cities in the world as you sit down to a scrumptious breakfast.

WAKE UP IN MARRAKESH

Breakfast with Oriental flair. Thoughts of Marrakesh immediately conjure up the heady scents of cardamom, saffron and cumin and rich, vibrant colours. No other city in the world can quite rival the level of intensity here in North Africa. Samarkand is the perfect reflection of this feeling. The vivid colours and gold decoration transport us to scenes from the 1001 Nights. And now you can enjoy this exotic atmosphere every morning – with a traditional Moroccan tea ceremony, stylishly presented on an Arabic silver tray and accompanied by white nougat or crepes and sweet fruits like figs and pomegranate. Treat your home to a touch of the exotic, too, with colourful Berber rugs and intricately embroidered cushions.

INSPIRATIONAL LOCATION: JARDIN MAJORELLE

In 1919, the French artist Jacques Majorelle took up residence in a villa within this beautiful garden. He painted his studio in his favourite Majorelle blue. Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent also fell in love with the villa in 1980 and co-founded The Majorelle Trust to ensure the conservation of the incredible variety of palm trees, tropical plants and cacti on the property. With its magnificent villa, pavilions and turtle pond, the grounds were the inspiration for many of Yves Saint Laurent’s famous fashion collections.

FLOWER COUTURE

No one creates bouquets as beautifully as the Berlin based florist, Marsano. They have skilfully created an extraordinary floral symphony to celebrate two of the most desirable Villeroy&Boch collections. Their poetic flower arrangements are an inspiration for us to let our tables bloom in the most sophisticated of colours and combinations.

The perfect backdrop: the silky, perennial ‘silver ragwort’ is a particular favourite of our floral artists. The shiny, grey leaves are ideal for highlighting the delicate blooms of the Artesano Provençal collection, whilst ‘Spiraea’ or ‘meadowsweet’ enhances the scene even further. As a hardy all-rounder, its exuberant confetti of petals brings a luxurious touch to the decoration. The shining star of the table arrangement is orange ‘milkweed’, also known as ‘Asclepias’. It brings a blaze of colour to the modern country-house feel of the ‘Artesano Provençal’ range.

Bringing spring to the table: the wonderfully carefree watercolour design of ‘Anmut Flowers’ offers a fresh new expression to floral décor. Since its launch, it has captured the hearts of young women all over the world. Elena Strütt from Marsano creates a highly effective frame for its watercolour design with a cherry red dinner plate, with platinum rim, and crystal glass red buffet plate. The delicate trio is surrounded by hundreds of hydrangea flowers, filling the whole arrangement with vibrant life. An artistic composition just too beautiful to wither.

LA VIE EN ROSE

TROPICAL DREAM

To die for: ‘Eustoma’ is a classic symbol of gratitude and appreciation. The petals of this elegant plant, also known as ‘prairie gentian’, take centre stage in this graceful composition. Their delicate pink merges with the floral watercolour pattern of the ‘Mariefleur’ range, a design inspired by Monet’s gardens in Giverny. The décor is framed by the fresh ‘pink rose’ dinner plate of the ‘Anmut My Colour’ collection with its platinum border. The First Lady of the flower world, the ‘dahlia’, is used to add show-stopping touches. Its petals are incomparably vivid and seem to exude colour from within. Their beautiful purple tone brings a hint of magic to this sweet, floral still life.

Exotic art: With its tropical plant designs and gold-plated butterflies, the Villeroy&Boch ‘Amazonia’ range opens the gates to a long-forgotten world – following in the footsteps of naturalist and artist Alexander von Humboldt. The magnificent ‘Gloriosa’, also known as flame lily, adds breath-taking touches to this botanical table arrangement. Its fiery red petals are positioned to form a striking circle. Within the expressive floral collage, a subtle contrast is created through the addition of light green-blue mopheads. They sprinkle a fresh air of meadow romance and create a wonderful harmony with the crisp kiwi green tone of the crystal glass buffet plate from the ‘Colour Concept’ range and the ‘Anmut My Colour’ dinner plate.

Majorca simply couldn’t be any more picturesque or authentic: the Oliver Moragues family is living the dream, free from the pressures of time and the constant thirst for change. A visit to their finca is to enter a world steeped in over 500 years of history.

M

ountains, olives and oleanders stretch as far as the eye can see. We travel over dusty roads, past fields upon fields of vineyards. Twentyfive kilometres from Palma, close to the village of Algaida at the foot of Puig de Randa mountain, our destination awaits. Nestled amongst pine forests and vineyards lies the fi nca owned by the Oliver Moragues family. A picturesque troop of eight Majorcan donkeys eye us curiously. The stony driveway that winds between gnarled oak, almond and olive trees leads us directly to the entrance of the property. To greet us, the whole clan has gathered on the beautifully shaded porch in front of the main house. Señora

Joana, the radiant lady of the manor, introduces the others: her brother Gabriel, partner Jaime, daughter Rocio, son Carlos, her sister Onane’s children, some cousins and the little Jack Russell Pepe, who just can’t contain his excitement and yelps with joy. A modern patchwork family that no one would ever think belonged to the oldest wine nobility in Majorca. We are given our fi rst tour of the historic manor house, which is surrounded by a thick carpet of wild grass, hibiscus, its own forest and, of course, lots of vines. Here, time really does seem to stand still. It’s hardly surprising that friends return time and again to visit this unique piece of paradise.

Lady of the house Joana adores green: whether hibiscus, oleander, cacti or succulents, displayed as we see here in bowls from the ‘Artesano Original’ and ‘Audun’ collections, the uniquely potted plants become a real eye-catcher for the table or terrace. Succulents, which are incidentally this year’s most ‘in’ plants, not only look like little works of art, but are also easy to care for.

FIFTEEN GENERATIONS OF THE FAMILY HAVE COOKED HERE

The stone-walled kitchen is not only home to ancient copper pots, ceramics and a stone sink, but also to a huge fireplace that is used often, especially in winter. The sooty roof bears witness to many cosy family nights in together.

STEEPED IN HISTORY:

THE WELCOME PARTY:

As we arrive, we are greeted by the Moragues’ family of donkeys: Apolonia, Rafela, Benet, Carlitos, Mariano and Roki.

The Binicomprat country residence dates back to 1229, when King James I of Aragon defeated the Moors and conquered the island. In 1511, the estate was bought by the Oliver Moragues family, who have been cultivating it for fi ve centuries. In 1996, Joana and her brother undertook the complete restoration of the house.

TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY

SIESTA SPIRIT

After working in the vineyard and cellar, Carlos and Gabriel like nothing better than enjoying a relaxed lunch in the small, shaded courtyard. There is plenty of time for long conversations over paella, which is cooked on a fire outside. Incidentally, you might notice that neither man wears a watch.

“The great thing about family is that every member has their own taste, and here, everything is mixed together to become one delightful whole,” says Rocio, the daughter of the house. Like the combination of traditional farmhouse furniture, black-and-white chequered table linen and the ultra-pure ‘Artesano’ collection with the majestic ‘Audun’ – a relaxed, warm mix of styles.

SIMPLE PLEASURES

The Moragues sell some of the best Majorcan wines. In their private lives, nothing makes them happier than a home-made paella and a glass of chilled OM red wine. Glassware: ‘Farmhouse Touch’, red wine goblet.

GIFT IDEA THAT FINCA LOOK

The pure and elegant forms of the ‘Artesano Original’ range are not just popular with this family, as the new interpretation of old, traditional shapes delights everyone who seeks clarity, simplicity and beauty and loves life’s authentic pleasures. Like a variety of different tomatoes, for instance. Presented on a serving stand, they look completely irresistible. ‘Artesano Original’, serving stand: bottle (vinegar/oil), plates. Glass: ‘Farmhouse Touch’, red wine goblet.

You can find this and more Majorcan recipes at: www.villeroyboch.com/binicomprat

The land is larger than expected. The Oliver Moragues wine-growing estate, which has been in the family since 1511, spans some 20 hectares of land, a private pine and oak forest and seven hectares of hand-cultivated vineyards. The vibrant Joana and her down-to-earth, relaxed brother Gabriel have created an idyllic hideaway here, where friends and family live, laugh and eat together in happy harmony. There is no doubt that their life is centred around traditional roots, and also personal dreams. The siblings are just two of the eight offspring of this longestablished Majorcan family. Alongside their spectacular wine-growing estate, the family’s century-old property also includes the Can Ribas estate, which is farmed by Joana’s sister Onane. Nevertheless, the family headquarters have always been the breathtakingly charming Possessió Binicomprat. The historic building, one of the oldest on the island, was lovingly refurbished by Joana in 1996 to become a stylish and exemplary agrotourism hotel. Arriving guests are greeted by a long, opulently decorated table in front of the house, where celebrations extend long into the night. In day-today life, however, the family prefers the backyard with its wild foliage and cool shade, directly behind the kitchen. While the bustling hostess takes care of the house, herb garden and kitchen, the adventurous and innovative winegrowers Carlos Cabeza Oliver and his uncle Gabriel are in charge of the wine production. They have just returned from the vineyards and sit down to their well-earned almuerzo, a late lunch. To start with, one of Mallorca’s simplest

BON PROFIT!

and tastiest specialities is served: ‘pa amb oli.‘ A slice of farmhouse bread, topped with local Ramallet tomatoes, drizzled with a little olive oil and a sprinkling of salt and eaten with Iberian cured ham. To drink, there is chilled OM red wine (OM stands for the family’s surname, Oliver Moragues). The main course is home-made paella with fresh seafood, including Sóller prawns, which are widely considered to be the best on the island and carry a correspondingly expensive price tag. Lunch is enjoyed at a leisurely pace, followed by a siesta in the shade of the pine trees with their magnificent view of the Randa mountain monastery.

GIFT IDEA FAMILY SECRET

The typical Spanish liqueur Hierbas is made by leaving a variety of herbs, such as anise, oregano or mint, to macerate for several days. The exact recipe is a closely guarded family secret.

J

oana takes advantage of the cooler evening hours to stroll through her small, lusciously blooming vegetable and herb garden, armed with two bowls. Here, in what she smilingly refers to as her green oasis, is where she re-fuels her energy and harvests the produce that is served fresh on the table every day. Organic cultivation and sustainability have long been a matter of course for her. She categorically forbids the use of any electrical or even petrol-operated equipment in her Garden of Eden. “There is nothing

As an ecologically-conscious and stylish gardener, Joana plants her beloved cacti and succulents in an imaginative range of cups and bowls, which she uses to decorate ledges, stairs and even the table.

“I love working with plants. Talking is not my strong point. That’s why I became a winegrower!” jokes Gabriel Oliver Moragues, the Majorcan wine expert.

R

ocio, Carlos and Gabriel hold their small, private wine tastings every Monday, directly amongst the vines. The new vintage has to be tasted before the next events. Tapas and a coca de trampo, a delicious Majorcan pizza with summer vegetables, are an indispensable accompaniment. Carlos is a latecomer to the profession. The former marketing expert initially decided to seek his fortune away from the island, until he began a new life as a winegrower at Binicomprat. The limited production OM wines are amongst the finest on the island. A maximum of 40,000 bottles are fi lled per year. The two red wines present balanced cuvées of Manto Negro, Callet, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. They are left to age for around 12 months in barrels made of French and American oak. The white wine is distinguished by a blend of the indigenous variety Prensal Blanc, in addition to Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The philosophy of the family business is firmly anchored in the commitment to increasing quality, not quantity. Whilst upholding culture and

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

The bohemian gourmets, as Joana and Rocio laughingly refer to themselves, now indulge in a touch of royal tradition. The delicate, historical engravings and shapes of the ‘Audun’ and ‘Audun Charm’ collections create an exciting contrast to the vibrant, Mediterranean way of life.

GARDEN IDYLL

With love and devotion, Joana picks everything that is eaten fresh from the garden every day. Her passion for tomatoes is obvious. Her organic garden, surrounded by a typical Majorcan stone wall, is brimming with a mass of different varieties. From the smaller Tomàtiga de Ramellet, which, with its slightly sour and intense taste, is traditionally used for ‘pa amb oli’, to the distinctively shaped Raf variety, which Joana proclaims is “the best salad tomato in the world!” The legendary Raf tomato is grown in Spain on salty soil (partly irrigated with salt water) which gives it the special aroma that makes it so coveted and expensive. Right: Round bowl from the ‘Artesano Provençal Verdure’ collection, and flower pot with handle.

tradition that date back 500 years, the company simultaneously drives forward the development of organic wines. Today, all of the OM wines are certified by the CBPAE-UE organic association. Carlos, the trained oenologist, explains, “Here, we don’t just use the eco label as a marketing tool – it’s our fundamental philosophy.” To compensate for the relatively small cultivation area, grapes are bought from vineyards run by other members of the family. This way, you always know what you’re getting. “Above all, we see eco-farming as a means of preventative work. Lots more work! Preventing diseases with ecological methods. Vines are like babies: If you protect them too much, they can’t develop a strong immune system – or character,” adds Gabriel. “It’s also a bigger risk. There are times when you get a poor harvest. But for us, it’s not about getting rich. Wine is our way of life. We want to stay small. We don’t think, ‘More bottles mean more happiness!’ We want to create wines that people remember. This is why we sample a lot, record everything like in a library and talk a great deal about the direction in which we want specific wines to develop, and what we can do with the grapes and their character. Through pruning or different soil management techniques, for example.” The OM label has long been familiar amongst connoisseurs. The wines are exported to all five continents, and 70% of customers come from abroad. The Majorcan wines enjoy particular popularity in Scandinavia, Switzerland and Germany. OM not only stands for the family’s surname initials, but also for the spiritual expression in yoga, which just happens to be Joana’s secret passion that helps her to remain calm and composed even when the stress levels rise.

THE FAMILY WINERY Oenologist Carlos, who studied in Barcelona, Madrid and Berlin, and his uncle Gabriel have opted for organic cultivation and place the grapes, the health of the vines with diverse cultivation strategies at the forefront of their daily work. “Happiness is when the grapes are healthy and perfectly ripe in September or October when we try them for the last time on harvest day. It’s the feeling of knowing that we have accomplished it!” says Gabriel. “Here, 90 % of our work is carried out in the fields. We want our wine to be genuine, not artificially enhanced. The Shiraz that we grow near the forest, without loosening the soil, tastes different to the one we cultivate further away on soil that we aerate with a tractor. We want our customers to experience this difference.” We reveal the family’s four favourite wines:

The chief buyers and wine connoisseurs who have been lucky enough to sample this ‘private wine’ are seriously impressed: ripe strawberry and cherry notes and a beautiful blend of freshness and creaminess on the palate. Bottled in limited quantity, you have to visit the estate for yourself to discover the magic that these two winegrowers create with the indigenous Manto Negro grapes. It’s definitely worth the trip!

This straw-coloured wine is limited to a production of 3,000 bottles and is a blend of the Majorcan Prensal Blanc with Spanish Viognier and French Sauvignon Blanc. The result is a refreshing, extremely compact wine with aromas of apricot and mint and a lingering finish.

BREAKFAST BLISS:

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

OASIS OF HAPPINESS

There’s no better way to start the day than a fresh café con leche, with quince jelly and croissants. Joana and daughter-in-law Loreto share a weakness for design and sweet things. The highlight of the conversation: the wedding of Loreto and Carlos last summer. “We were married in the middle of the vineyards, and had tied hundreds of white balloons around the finca, which floated like moons in the night. We also had a table completely set in white and the biggest dessert buffet in Spain!” laughs Loreto. “I couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful place to celebrate that moment.” ‘Farmhouse Touch Blueflowers’. ‘Entrée’ glass jug, 1.5l, ‘Retro Accessories’ footed plate with glass lid.

pastry or breadcrumbs. In addition to freshly squeezed orange juice, café con leche and croissants, traditional ensaimadas take their prized place on the Spanish breakfast table. Joana has topped these thin, lardcoated, brioche-like specialities with apricots. How did her penchant for Villeroy&Boch develop? “The brand is very popular here in Spain, and is appreciated for its quality in the same way as Miele, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. My daughter went to school in Palma with the daughters of Jaime Casanovas, and I always used to drop by his shop to see the latest tableware and home décor collections. And so slowly, my little obsession began,” she admits with a grin. “I love buying ceramics, porcelain and old kitchen utensils. After all, here at the finca I hardly need expensive shoes! And such things never go out of fashion – they stay forever. For my grandchildren and their children.” It looks like she may not have to wait too long for them, either, as her son Carlos recently got married here. His wife Loreto tells us, “I wanted our wedding to be like a beautiful, rural spring festival.

SWEET DREAMS

My family and I come from Madrid. I’m still completely awe-struck by this place and its magic. And I’m delighted to now be a part of it.” It smells of summer. The pool, just a few steps away, is surrounded by olive trees, a sea of Mediterranean flowers and inviting garden furniture in a hippie-esque, Balearic style. There is a peaceful sense of calm, broken only by the carefree shrieks of the children Florencia, 9, Miguel, 11, and Dana, 5 as they jump into the pool and nibble on cherries and apricots in Mariefleur bowls which, incidentally, they have just discovered make fantastic floating dishes! Refreshing juice stands ready in colourful glasses, whilst a multi-coloured marshmallow cake waits to be devoured. Joana sinks happily into the fresh linen cushions of her pool seating area and immerses herself in a design magazine.

Beautifully decorated candy cake with pink and white marshmallows and brightly coloured gummi bears are perfect for sweet birthday girls and boys. Guaranteed to get the party started! Crystal glass plate and bright ‘Colour Concept’ glasses. ‘Caffè Club’ tray in cornflower blue.

RELAXING IN THE SHADE

In the afternoon, Joana loves to unwind in the Mediterranean-style seating area by the pool. The perfect companion: a refreshing white wine spritzer in the sea-blue ‘Boston Coloured’ glass. Cushions by Designers Guild, ‘Mariefleur’ Serve & Salad dip bowl.

I

t is late afternoon and we hear the lady of the house call from the Gothic arches of the main entrance. After all, on such an expanse of land, getting the whole team around the table is no easy feat. But by the time Gabriel and Mateo begin placing the fi rst fish on the barbecue and the smoke winds seductively from the chimney, even the last stragglers have gathered. We take a quick look around the historic chapel of the house, before joining the others to become part of one of those evenings that have made this place almost legendary. Friends

BOUNDLESS FLAIR

Joana likes to give her passion for decoration free rein. Her father’s collection of bird cages becomes a new home for tableware, whilst the tablecloth from her daughter’s Africa project (www.bambaproject.org) is mixed with the old Majorcan tiles that adorn the stone washbasins.

from Berlin, Madrid and Barcelona, theatre directors, politicians and writers all sing the praises of this unstoppable and truly exceptional woman. Her spirited laughter and the obligatory aperitif herald the beginning of a warm and unforgettable get-together. Joana loves diversity and contrasts that are perhaps only visible in the detail. For her, “they add up to something much bigger.” And yes, it is precisely these details and the love with which they are perceived and used that stays in the guests’ memories. Joana’s latest catch from the island’s capital, Palma, are some hand-dyed batik linen runners and napkins from Designers Guild, whose fringed borders instil the same enthusiasm in her as the combination of the simplest, old clay pots and African wooden bowls teamed with the new ‘Artesano Provençal Verdure’ porcelain range from Villeroy&Boch. Spaniards are famous for living with all of their senses. Warm evening sun, the fragrance of the pine forest and long mealtimes with the family are the epitome of lust for life. On the menu today is trampo, a typical Spanish summer salad with finely diced tomatoes, peppers and onions picked straight from the garden, barbecued prawns with roasted garlic, fresh sardines

caught by a family friend, vegetarian quiche, green asparagus, black olives, stuffed peppers and grilled sweet potatoes with aioli. “We eat a lot of Majorcan dishes that have been adapted and changed as they are passed down through the family. We cut things a little more finely, or combine ingredients differently and somewhere along the line, a new dish emerges. Life is too short to stick to the rules.” Gabriel and Carlos have chosen a couple of nice bottles to complement the spread, new OM vintages and family reservas. Of course, the family also enjoy tasting wines from all around the world. “Ever since I was a child, I have been surrounded by wine. I helped to pick the grapes and spin the barrels, learning everything there was to learn,” says Carlos, “My uncle always said – We have so little water here, and that is why we drink wine!” We ask what the Moragues like best about living here. Joana doesn’t need to think twice. “What is the best thing? The fact that we have worked together for three generations! That together, we create something that will remain for many decades. Something that contributes to the history of this place.”

The 2015 summer trends for light cuisine? If this summer is as good last year, I predict lots of barbecues, and everyone knows that vegetables grilled on the barbecue are fantastic and can be very low in calories. My tip for this summer: grill lots of veggies on the barbie – but don’t forget the meat.

Which basic ingredients should we always have in the fridge for light, summer cooking? Lemon, yoghurt, tomatoes and spring onions. How can fruit and vegetables be combined? Adding fruit to salads is an obvious option, such as lamb’s lettuce with fried chanterelle mushrooms and raspberries. Taste contrasts are the essence of my cuisine, especially the taste balance between acidity and fat.

Red pepper, sea salt, mint

Antipasti dish, small dinner plate, side plate, cutting/serving board – all from the ‘Artesano Original ’ range. ‘Piemont ’ cutlery, stainless steel, set of 24.

FIT, NOT FAT Nutritional tips from qualified food chemist, Astrid Büscher. GO LIGHT: Don’t over stress your body with unnecessary digestion. Avoid heavy meals, especially in the evening. EATING CODE: Eat fruit or vegetables with every meal. For protein, choose a small piece of fish or meat, cheese, eggs or soya products. Be sparing with carbohydrate-rich side dishes like potatoes, bread, pulses, pasta, rice or cereals. WAVE GOODBYE TO COUNTING CALORIES: People who eat this way stay slim without even having to try. Enjoying three small meals a day, around 4 to 5 hours apart, is the best way. GO FOR: Good fatty acids, such as those found in fish, should be included in small amounts. Avoid fast food and readymade meals. VITALITY KICK: Fresh herbs and spices make fantastic natural flavour enhancers instead of fat. Their wonderful aromas and organic ingredients also boost vitality. GENTLY DOES IT: ‘Light’ preparation methods such as steaming or braising enhance the flavour of food and preserve important nutrients.

and exhibitions across Europe. From 1951 to 1963, Monika von Boch-Galhau also worked as the company photographer at Villeroy & Boch. Alongside product photography and documentary photos on production processes, she also did freelance work for the company magazine Keramos. During her subsequent period of creative development, Monika von Boch-Galhau concentrated exclusively on freelance photography and joined the artist collective Neue Gruppe Saar. She continued to work on her artistic portfolio until her death in 1993, and is known as one of the most important German photographers of her day.

s an amateur photographer, Monika von Boch-Galhau felt a particular connection to nature. Her lens was generally focussed on landscapes, both in her native Saarland and on her travels. At 35, she turned her hobby into an academic vocation and matriculated at the School of Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken. As a student of Otto Steinert, one of the most important German photographers and founder of subjective photography, von Boch-Galhau drastically changed her style and her images became as abstract as those by Man Ray. Von Boch-Galhau captured black and white images that were not recognisable with the naked eye. They appeared in professional journals

elgian siblings Anna and Eugène chose to follow the bohemian life from an early age, in preference to the industrial careers of their parents. They were both charismatic characters, who dazzled with their own impressionist works and were at home in the illustrious circles of the contemporary artistic elite. Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Seurat and Paul Signac were just some of the artists’ friends. Anna’s elegant Art Nouveau apartment became a meeting place for the young and creative scene. Thanks to their wealthy industrial family, she and her younger brother enjoyed financial security and supported some of their poorer colleagues by buying their works. This resulted in an impressive art collection, which included Van Gogh’s famous painting The Red Vineyard. Eugène especially formed a close friendship with Vincent. After meeting in the southern French town of Arles, the artist dedicated his famous portrait The Poet, which now hangs in the Louvre in Paris, to his Belgian friend in 1888. Despite their wealth, Anna and Eugène Boch were actively involved in their art. They were part of the Belgian art movement Les Vingt (Les XX), a platform for unconventional, modern art, founded in 1883. They were also renowned for their impressionist landscape paintings, through which they made a key contribution to the contemporary artistic era.

I grew up with it. My mother combined bold colours in clothing and home décor. I was influenced by the folkloric culture of my Hungarian ancestors. My father also used to show me the colourful and brightly patterned designs of the latest Villeroy&Boch products.

The coffee pot from the ‘Aureus’ collection is one of her absolute favourite Villeroy & Boch pieces.

ou’d be forgiven for asking yourself which is more radiant: the smile that lights up Carmen von Boch-Kivus’ face or the colourful canvasses that decorate her vibrant studio. Lush oil paintings of bouquets, fruits and dance shoes can be seen on the walls. Von BochKivu specialises in representational painting. She soon realised her passion for flowers, art, painting and colours – virtually everything that surrounded her childhood. Nevertheless, it took a trip to Argentina with her father Luitwin von Boch-Galhau to teach her to have confidence in herself as an artist, and she then painted the picture that secured her admission to study art at the renowned ‘Ecole des Beaux-Arts’ in Paris. It depicts the national drink of Argentina, mate, in a typical, round, wooden gourd with a straw. Mate is still Carmen Boch-Kivu’s favourite variety of tea today. The mother of two admits that tango is another of her passions, also learned in Argentina. It’s no wonder, then, that her favourite painting – that she would never dream of selling for all the money in the world – portrays a pair of her favourite dance shoes that have accompanied her over many years. But Argentina is not the only source of inspiration for Carmen von BochKivu. Her flower garden provides her with abundant subject matter, too. Capturing such moments is what she calls her ‘creative engine’. She loves the energetic effect of colours as they are brought to the canvas. Painting is her lifeblood. “For me, colour is just as important as breathing.”

arly practise makes the master: 78-yearold Odile Villeroy began taking private drawing lessons aged just 13. Upon completing school, however, a compromise was necessary and she dedicated herself to theory by studying art history in Paris. After all, the idea of a female artist was still unusual and frowned upon in the post-war period. Nevertheless, she continued to embrace her creativity, and mastered a range of techniques, such as oil painting, charcoal, ink, pastel and etching. Her favourite subjects are trees. In her imaginative paintings, they assume human-like form. She explains, “For me, trees are like people.” In 2009, she even dedicated an exhibition to them called Hinter dem Baum (‘Behind the Tree’), which focussed on a subjective cognitive pro-

cess beyond the surface of things. In addition to trees, Odile Villeroy paints everyday objects, revealing their signs of wear to give them their very own character. In other areas of life, too, Odile Villeroy’s bustling activity is rivalled by few of her generation. Along with a small group of female artists in Metz, Odile Villeroy holds regular exhibitions in the region, and has thus been able to make a name for herself that goes far beyond the prominent inheritance of her aristocratic title. In addition to painting and family, which always comes first for her, the mother of five is committed to supporting charitable projects and aid organisations, such as the children’s charity ‘Für ein Lächeln der Kinder’. Now that’s what you call a superwoman!

“Nowhere else do I find such beautiful FORMS and shapes as in NATURE. For me, trees are like people.”

phélie Villeroy discovered her passion for fabrics, colours and textiles as a student at the ‘Ecole Nationale Supérieure des BeauxArts’ in Paris. Painting and embroidery continue to shape the artistic identity of the 37-year-old today. After completing her art studies, she worked for the international fashion agency ‘Bureau de Style’, where she designed fabrics. However, she missed her brush, paint pots and sewing thread so much that in 2007, she decided to establish her own label for hand-made textile art and opened a small boutique in Rue Saint-Honoré, one of the oldest streets in Paris. ‘Les Créations d‘Ophélie’ is a treasure trove of colourful, intricately painted cushions, detailed curtains and customised home textiles – all of which carry her typical stylistic touch of ‘urban poetry’.

on-conformist, provocative and mercilessly honest: these three descriptions are the perfect summary of René von Boch’s art. Rather than fitting neatly into a pre-defined category, it sets its own standards. Especially in terms of subject matter: René von Boch paints topless, buxom women and smoking dachshunds. Other characteristic traits of his work are exaggerated caricatures and surrealist collages. So much eroticism and provocation are certainly not appropriate for a mass audience, but they are full of authenticity. René von Boch only draws what he is interested in personally. Bending to convention is definitely not his thing. The result is what he

calls ‘cheeky, but acceptable’. A touch of humour and originality has never done any harm, after all. Especially when conservative opinion can be alienated so creatively. A pleasure for all open-minded art lovers.

apturing a fleeting moment that ‘is impossible to perceive with the naked eye.’ is precisely what 46-year-old Michel von Boch seeks to preserve. He creates moments that remain forever. Especially on his travels to destinations such as Spain, India and Cuba, when he documents foreign people and places or unusual moments like a silent observer. Rather than taking staged shots, he aims to portray the beauty of real life, complete with everything that distinguishes it. His passion for photography is also something he shares with his great aunt Monika von Boch (see page 27). Michel von Boch is happiest when using his Hasselblad medium format camera, which has been his constant companion since 1990. Despite his many trips abroad, the father of three likes nothing better than spending time in Paris or Mettlach. he bustling cosmopolitan artist was born in Canada, grew up in Argentina and studied art in Switzerland, where she continues to live today. “More clay flows through her veins than blood,” her father once said, also referring to their ancestry in the Villeroy & Boch ceramics dynasty. Claudia von Boch upholds the family legacy, albeit in her own, special style. Since she was twelve years old, she has been inseparable from her favourite material – clay. Today, she creates sculptures made of clay and ceramics that break with their original form and pay homage to the fascinating individuality of nature through their unique appearance. Her self-developed production process mimics the stratification process of geological earth formations which gives the objects a thoroughly natural, almost archaic character. The 57 year old has her own studio in Lausanne and those who fancy delving into the creative world of pottery can participate in her workshops or visit one of her regular exhibitions in Switzerland.

On the trail of time

elen von Boch-Galhau is one of the most exceptionally creative women in the history of the company. In her early 30s, the qualified ceramics designer broke new ground, away from classic tableware design, when she created the avant-garde ‘Kugel’ tableware – a true wonder of production. Nevertheless, Helen never lost sight of tradition and combined modern design with old craft techniques, such as celadon and crystal glazing. This not only made her the most renowned designer in the family, but also of her time, and her work continued to enrich the tableware sector for many years. Her most spectacular creation, the ball-shaped tableware, can be admired in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratives in Paris. And those who are very lucky may be able to clinch one of these rare sets at an art auction.

ove converted Villeroy & Boch into a family company. Eugen von Boch, son of manufacturer Jean-François Boch, who led the merger with industrialist Nicolas Villeroy, married Oktavie Villeroy, the granddaughter of the business partner. But the success story that propelled Villeroy & Boch to a global group did not end there: Eugen von Boch’s passion for ceramics and his marketing talent heralded the big breakthrough. New products, such as the famous ‘Mettlach tiles’ – an aesthetic and functional innovation of their time – are the expression of his creativity. Eugen von Boch also supported a range of cultural associations, founded a drawing school where he trained his staff, opened the ceramics museum and was even the mayor of Mettlach. Eugen von Boch was well-equipped for his profession: he himself was a gifted artist who

could just as easily create impressive landscape drawings as rough sketches for visionary ideas. After Eugen von Boch was ennobled by the Prussian king for his social and economic services to the region, his son René von Boch followed in his footsteps and led the empire onwards, with equal success. Aged just 23, the newly qualified engineer was in charge of the new mosaic factory, an industrial wonder of its time. The popular ceramic tiles were taken up by many churches, including Cologne Cathedral, government buildings and palaces, and continue to adorn their floors and walls today. By way of a creative balance, René von Boch tried his hand at surreal caricatures, similar to those by Wilhelm Busch. Humorous, cheeky and with the talented flair of the von Bochs.
