COMMUNITY WELLBEING GRANTS OF UP TO $10,000 NOW AVAILABLE

Wentworth Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, have launched grants of up to $10,000 for organisations or community groups based within bushfire affected communities in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Lithgow areas. The grants are part of the Federal Government’s response to the 2019/20 bushfires, and can be used to deliver activities that foster connection, friendships and relationships, build community capacity, skills or knowledge, and which promote and/or refer to support services. These larger grants follow on from the micro-grants of up to $1,000 that were released late last year for individuals directly impacted by the fires, within the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Lithgow areas, to conduct small grass roots community connection activities. Wentworth Healthcare CEO, Lizz Reay, acknowledged the challenges many communities within the region had faced over the past 18 months and emphasised the important role that community grants play in aiding community recovery. “We know that community connection and cohesion is vital for community recovery during and after times of adversity. The Community Wellbeing Grants enable people to actively participate in their community’s recovery journey. They bring people together and allow them to choose their own way to respond to the loss, anxiety and distress they have experienced,” she said. A range of projects and activities may be considered appropriate for funding, including, but not limited to: • social connection events that bring the community together to build networks and friendships through

Office Details

LithGlow 2021 is a free ticketed COVID-19 safe event with a limit of 3,000 people. There will be the largest pyrotechnic display ever seen in Lithgow brought to you by Energy Australia. The display will feature a dazzling barrage of shooting stars high over Lithgow Blast Furnace and Lake Pillans culminating with a perfectly choreographed multicoloured finale. The spectacular fireworks display will reflect the power and energy of Lithgow’s Blast Furnace that roared like a fiery dragon from May 1907 until 1928. You’ll be able to walk through the dominating Blast Furnace structure and imagine what it must have been like when it was the largest iron works in Australia 114 years ago. The site will become the canvas for lighting artists to recreate the glow of the once powerful blast furnace that was the heart of the Lithgow iron and steel industry.

There will be roving entertainment including Cirkus Surreal, plus mouth-watering food on offer. Pull up a chair, or bring along a picnic blanket to spread out and enjoy the entertainment. The spectacular Energy Australia Fireworks will be the largest fireworks display ever seen in Lithgow. The live soundtrack for the night will be the psychedelic tunes of Paper-Sun under the backdrop of the towering Blast Furnace.

LITHGOW COUNCIL ROUNDUP Submissions Extension - Draft Hassans Walls Mountain Bike Trails Strategy

Lithgow City Council has recently extended the timeframe for the community to have their say on the draft Hassans Walls Mountain Bike Trails Strategy. The Lithgow Regional Economic Development Strategy 2018-2022 (REDS) identified that one of Lithgow’s key endowments is an abundance of natural and recreational amenities. One of the REDS key strategic directions is the prioritisation of liveability/lifestyle infrastructure and local place-making. A related priority action is the development of recreation infrastructure such as mountain bike trails. A draft Mountain Bike Trails Strategy for Hassans Walls Reserve has now been developed with the assistance of recognised experts in the field. The draft strategy details the infrastructure trails requirements, and cost to develop 3 purpose-built mountain biking trails at Hassans Walls Reserve. These would be suitable for broader scale mountain biking super flow type events. These are geared to a wide range of riders – from elite to amateur racers as well as families, couples and groups of friends riding together. With the trails finishing close to the Lithgow City

Centre, it is anticipated that this can lead to increased spending locally by visitors.

Submissions should be addressed to: Lithgow City Council, PO Box 19 LITHGOW NSW 2790, or emailed to council@lithgow.nsw.gov.au. Following the exhibition period and the receipt of public comments, this matter will be reported back to Council. Recovery Officers (CRO’s) assisting councils across NSW. “This Council is thrilled to have Rachel Nicoll continuing as our Community Recovery Officer for an additional 12 months so that she can continue the great work done so far with the bushfire affected community’’ said Mayor, Clr Ray Thompson. Additional funding has been awarded to Council to assist the community with flood recovery as well. This funding will allow the residents affected by recent flooding to access relevant information and resources. Council will continue to implement community recovery programs and provide community capacity building.

Like every community, the villages of Lithgow care about their youth. We want them to grow up happy and healthy, to have good jobs, strong networks of family and friends and a long productive life - living the dream! And we want them to know how to make the choices that set them on the path to those dreams. It’s hard work, though! The meme says “It takes a whole village to raise a kid but no one ever tells you where it is or how to get there.” So where do we start? The Lithgow Drug Action Taskforce (LDAT) is a group comprising representatives from local high schools, parents and carers, Council, drug and alcohol, mental health, youth and community support services, and Police. The taskforce is supported by industry experts and advocate evidence-based strategies that work. In 2019 LDAT completed a survey of local youth to determine the internationally recognised strategies which will be most effective for our community. One of the key strategies is community awareness and education. 2020 restricted those activities. In 2021 LDAT are making up for lost time, with a great calendar of events in store. To kick off, LDAT will be banging the drum at LithGlow on 08 May. So if you want to know more about LDAT, proven strategies that work to protect our youth, local survey results, have a chat or just come and make some noise with us, check out our stall - the one with the drums. You can also find more information at https://planetyouth. org or https://www.facebook.com/planetyouthlithgow/. “This extension comes at a critical time and I’m very grateful to be able to continue this work with Council alongside some of the most resilient people and communities. There are a number of great initiatives following these disasters and I hope wherever people are in their recovery journey, they find some encouragement that assistance and support is available. It’s just a phone call away”, said Community Recovery Officer Rachel Nicoll. “The announcement recognises the strong partnership approach between NSW Government and Council. We are excited about this opportunity and what lies ahead as we work together to build resilience in our community”, said Mayor Thompson.

YOUTH OPPORTUNITES PROGRAM SET TO “CREATE LITHGOW”

The NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities Grants Program is set to put young people from Lithgow on the road to stardom.

“Create Lithgow” is one of 35 initiatives across the state to receive a share in the NSW Government’s $1.5 million initiative. The project was launched recently and involves a year-long series of workshops for young people who are looking to make a career in the creative industries. Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said NSW Government funding of $42,000 will allow Lithgow City Council to drive the project, under the direction of its Community Development Officer, Alison Kim. He said that over the next 10 months there will be workshops covering all aspects of the creatives industries. “These range from song writing and sound production to recording, marketing, running a small business, copyright and legal issues, promotion stagecraft, lighting, videography and various other topics that are relevant to young people launching a career in the creative sector,” Mr Toole said. According to Ms Kim the workshops will be facilitated by Centwest Entertainment and will tap into a range of skills, talents and experience in the local area as well as industry professionals from the wider region and around the state and nation. “The initial workshop was facilitated by Lis Bastian, the former CEO of Arts Out West, Varuna Writers’ House and founder of The Big Fix, Blue Mountains Plurivserity, the Lithgow Sprint and Stop Laughting This is Serious Gallery,” Ms Kim said. “The workshops are for young people aged between 12 and 25 years who are excited about the creative industries.” Mr Toole said the Youth Opportunities program helps young people build life skills, employment pathways, and nurture good wellbeing and mental health.

CREATE LITHGOW: Member for Bathurst Paul Toole with Alison Kim, right of white board, at the first Create Lithgow workshop.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said 35 projects statewide received up to $50,000 each through the program. “We want all young people to be engaged and active members of their communities and these grants foster exciting new initiatives to make that happen,” Mr Ward said. “Young people are our State’s greatest asset and we are working hard to equip them with the skills and

knowledge they need to make our communities stronger and better places to live.” Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women Bronnie Taylor said more than half of the successful projects are based in regional and rural NSW. “Rural communities know it’s vital to engage with young people as they are the future leaders in their regions,” Mrs Taylor said.

BATMAN SWOOPS IN TO PROTECT FLYING FRIENDS THROUGH BRIDGE UPGRADE

WORKS BEGIN AT OLD WANG POWER STATION

Liberty Industrial took control of the site on Monday 3 May to begin the demolition project which will see works continue at the site until the end of 2022. The initial works will be highly visible to the public, however once the team moves inside to continue the bulk of the demolition, it will be less obvious, despite being some of the harder and more intense demolition work. Greenspot will be maintaining some of the iconic infrastructure on the 450 ha site to be repurposed in the future as they continue to develop their plans for a multi use industrial site. There will be advance warning for the community for any major demolition events such as the chimney stacks. There are a number of proposals currently being developed for the site, including an application for energy storage battery, but more importantly, the site will became a hotspot for industrial and commercial activity in the region and will bring some much needed employment opportunity to the region.

Endangered southern myotis microbats have been given new homes to ensure their protection while work continues on the McKanes Bridge upgrade in South Bowenfels. Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said temporary wooden structures, nicknamed ‘Batshacks’, were installed after a recent discovery of the tiny bats. “We are implementing bat-friendly measures to keep these bats happy and healthy, whilst continuing with our work to upgrade McKanes Bridge for all road users in the Lithgow region,” Mr Toole said. “Work was stopped immediately following their discovery and a specialist ecologist, who we have affectionately called Harry the Batman, was engaged to establish the extent of the colony. “Harry the Batman has helped develop a plan to keep the bats safe around the work site, including installing four temporary homes, similar to hotels for bats. “These structures, along with regular inspections from environment staff, will remain until the full bridge upgrade is completed later this year.” Harry Engel from Lesryk Environmental said it is vital that the millions of different species of native flora and fauna across NSW are protected. “It is great news the McKanes Bridge upgrade is ensuring the local environment and wildlife will be kept safe and protected, whilst promoting biodiversity and conservation in the area,” Mr Engel said. The historic McKanes Bridge over the Cox River, on McKanes Falls Road, is one of only four timber McDonald truss bridges that remain in NSW. Access to the bridge is currently closed and road users are advised to use Jenolan Caves Road and the Great Western Highway. The full bridge upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.

The large orange excavator is hard to miss at the old Wallerawang Power Station, however, by the time this newspaper is on stands, there will be noticeable change to the exterior of the building as demolition works begin on the old conveyors and bins.

AUSTRALIA’S LONGEST ROAD TUNNEL PROPOSED FOR GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY UPGRADE

Investigations are now underway to make an 11-kilometre tunnel the central component of an upgraded Great Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow, forming the longest road tunnel in Australia.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the proposed tunnel would transform the state by better connecting the Central West to the East Coast. “We have already committed to tunnels at Blackheath and Mount Victoria - this proposal would see those tunnels joined together, creating the longest road tunnel in the country,” Mr Barilaro said. “This is an immensely complex and ambitious plan, but we’re working hard to make it happen because we know what a difference it will make to the lives of commuters, to regional businesses who need access to Sydney and vice versa, to freight companies, to families visiting relatives and to holiday makers. “The NSW Government is committed to building a safer and stronger regional NSW and this corridor will enhance the state, significantly cutting travel times between the city and the bush. “Completing the Katoomba to Lithgow section would deliver the final stage of a 130 kilometre upgrade, delivering dual carriageway on the Great Western Highway, a multidecade program of works, making a safer, more resilient corridor.” Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the solution would link the two tunnels already determined for Blackheath and Mount Victoria to deliver a safer, more reliable connection through the Blue Mountains. “The NSW Government knows how important this upgrade is to the people who use the Great Western Highway every day and in improving connections between Sydney and the Central West, which is why we committed $2.5 billion to deliver a once-in-a-generation upgrade to this key corridor,” Mr Toole said. “As part of this upgrade, we’ve already committed to a 4.5-kilometre tunnel to bypass Blackheath and a 4-kilometre tunnel underneath Victoria Pass, one of the steepest roads in NSW. “We’re now investigating connecting those two proposed tunnels into one longer tunnel. This would be a historymaking project, delivering Australia’s longest road tunnel and allow motorists to avoid all the current pinch points from Blackheath in the east to Little Hartley on the western side of

Artist’s impression of the eastern entry to the proposed Blue Mountains tunnel

Victoria Pass. “It will also mean less disruption for local residents and businesses during construction and a smoother, safer journey for those travelling underneath Blackheath and Mount Victoria as well as those travelling above.” Mr Toole said the eastern entry for the proposed tunnel will be on the outskirts of Blackheath to minimise impacts on local homes and be built in a section of National Park land to the south of Evans Lookout Road. “At the Western end, the portal location in Little Hartley has been modified to improve safety and reduce property impacts in the valley.” Transport for NSW is engaging with National Parks about the upgrade’s impacts on land adjacent to the proposed portals. Neither portal would impact the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Mr Toole said heavy traffic over the Easter weekend had reiterated the importance of the Great Western Highway Upgrade and safe, reliable connections over the mountains for locals and travellers alike.

“This is an immensely challenging project but, once complete, it will deliver dual carriageway in both directions for over 100 kilometres,” Mr Toole said. “Should our investigations into a long tunnel determine that it isn’t viable, the community can be assured that we would proceed with a tunnel at Blackheath and a tunnel at Mount Victoria.” Construction on the Great Western Highway Upgrade is expected to start at Medlow Bath in 2022, with the full upgrade expected to be completed within 8 to 10 years. Mr Toole said the community would continue to shape the design of the upgrade as it moves towards construction. “Later this year, Transport for NSW will consult with the community on the entire upgrade, including the proposed Blackheath to Little Hartley Tunnel. “Between now and then, residents will see plenty of investigation work going on to make sure we have all the information we need to reduce the environmental impacts of the project.” For more information on the Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow, visit nswroads.work/ greatwesternhighway

FINDING PURPOSE MAJOR UPGRADES FOR RYDAL SHOWGROUND WITH $1,006,419 BEYOND WORK

Talk to any super fund and they will say that anyone approaching retirement should boost their super balance. Pre-retirees should investigate salary sacrifice arrangements and, if eligible, try to make ‘catch up’ contributions. That’s all sensible stuff. But in our experience, there’s more to a successful retirement than having lots of money saved up in your super account. And there are better ways for a pre-retiree to prepare than to just boost their super.

Life happens Keep in mind that most of us don’t retire when we would like to. Usually we retire earlier than we had planned. Most of us are forced into retirement early for one of three reasons. We might get sick ourselves and can no longer physically work, or we may be required to care for a loved one who is sick. And if we’re an employee, we are often made redundant. If we don’t feel ready to retire, and we’re forced to, some of us never recover. Especially if our sense of identity is unhealthily tied up in our working careers. That’s why pre-retirees should spend more time mentally preparing for retirement. We think the best way to do that is to find a sense of purpose beyond work. And the sooner you do that, the better.

FUNDING ANNOUNCED BY NSW GOVERNMENT

A brand new and much-needed amenities block will be added to the facilities at the Rydal Showground.

However, that’s just one of the upgrades set to be undertaken thanks to funding from the NSW Government. Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today announced funding of more than $1 million for a raft of different projects at the venue. This also includes the restoration of the run down wool pavilion which was in grave danger of not being able to be saved from the ravages of time. The nearby animal stocking yard will also receive a makeover. Mr Toole met Helen and David Black and Dan Morton at the showground to deliver the exciting news and see first-hand the plans for initiative. Although the 2021 Rydal Show was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, that paves the way for the upgrades to forge ahead.

According to Mrs Black, who is the treasurer of the Rydal Recreation Ground Trust, the plan is to locate the amenities block near the new canteen and pavilion. “We’re getting rid of the old gents toilets altogether,” she said. “The new facility will be all encompassing and include male and female amenities as well as showers so that we can cater for campers as well. “It’s going to be located so that people can drive right up to it, making it much easier for disabled access. “The mountain bikers use the ground every Tuesday night and there’s also the show dogs that stay here on certain weekends. And our family has even held a reunion here, so you can see we’re really a busy little showground and everyone thinks this will be a fantastic addition.” Mr Morton said they met with the ground’s different user groups before coming up with a final design. “We think it’s going to be a great addition for everyone. And it’s part of our forward planning now that the Bathurst Bullet stops at Rydal,” he said.

It’s not just us who have observed the importance of purpose. Viktor Frankl was a neurologist and psychiatrist who developed the concept of ‘logotherapy’. His theory was based on the premise that the primary motivational force for a human being is to find meaning in life, rather than search for pleasure or power. Research shows that life purpose is stronger in people with religious beliefs and strong life values, those with close community ties, and those with dedication to a cause.

More than money Interestingly, Frankl believed that affluence and materialism were potential barriers to an individual’s search for meaning in life. We don’t necessarily agree with that. We think it’s important to make the most of your financial opportunities. But we definitely agree that there’s more to a successful retirement than just money. And the sooner you find a cause beyond work and a community that shares your passion, the better off you will be in life and retirement. If you’d like to learn more about how to prepare for retirement, give us a call. We’d love to help. Daniel Crump is the founder of Daniel Crump Financial Planning. SELFCARE… NOT THAT EASY! Better Business Column By Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“We think, mistakenly, that success is the result of the amount of time we put into work, instead of the quality of time we put in.” - Arianna Huffington As a business owner starting a business, it is expected that we will work whatever hours it takes to be successful. The first two years of a business is critical in laying down the strong foundations of what business model you are attempting to create. Therefore, you use any hours available to bring your goals to fruition. It usually takes that long to build a sustainable and loyal customer base. The issue is that it also means creating some nasty habits such as missing meals, avoiding exercise, not sleeping, burning the candle at both ends, and not taking time off including regular holidays. This inevitably leads to overtiredness, bad decision making, and potentially burn-out. Previously, as a Recruiter and now as a business coach I love what I do and I spent most of my awake time working because I also identified with these roles, as this is who I am. When running my recruitment company, I burnt out twice and both times this negatively impacted my decision making, to the point where I almost went out of business. My approach was, “I will slow down when I have my first heart attack”. After my third heart attack I was still working ridiculous hours and constantly pushing myself to do better. Finally, after another major health issue I was forced to slow down. I now rarely work on the weekends and basically work only three days a week. I no longer work on Public Holidays, and I take up to eight weeks of leave per year. I walk every second day and my diet is very much improved. Interestingly, I have just had my best quarter in eight years and this quarter is looking great too. I am more focused, better disciplined, and say no to anything that is not core to my business. I have to rest on a regular basis to get through my workload and

this as actually made me more efficient and productive. To have a sustainable business, especially those of us are solopreneurs, you have to look after yourself first. Analyse how many hours you are actually working and how much time you spend with selfcare. How much time do you take to enjoy life outside of work? Do you create quality time to spend with your family and friends? Do you rest and relax enough or are you always in work mode? How often do you exercise? Just walking 30 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your mental and physical health. Many younger entrepreneurs that I have met have got the right idea. They do practise selfcare on a regular basis and it is ensuring their success and also their longevity. Your work does not define who you really are. Enjoy every part of life. Remember, your health and then your family should always come first. Take time out to smell the roses, plan your next holiday, and celebrate your achievements! "Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individual;s core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effecive and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision."

REDUCING WINTER AIR POLLUTION

Some simple steps to reduce wood smoke pollution are:

With winter well and truly on the way, residents can assist in reducing winter smoke and ensure their fires are burning correctly.

“The cold weather has arrived and now is the time to ensure your fire is burning correctly. The incorrect use of wood fire heaters can seriously affect our air quality”, said Lithgow Council Mayor Councillor Ray Thompson. Wood smoke particles from inefficient heaters can be seen as a smoke haze that sometimes sits over built up areas. Not only is this unattractive, it can also be bad for our health. Wood smoke can cause breathing difficulties, especially for people suffering existing respiratory conditions, such as asthmatics, and for very young children and frail older people.

8.

9. 10.

1. Don't let your heater smoulder overnight – keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame. 2. Burn only dry, aged hardwood in your wood heater. Unseasoned wood has lots of moisture, which causes a fire to smoke. 3. Store your wood under cover in a dry, ventilated area. Freshly cut wood needs to be stored for at least eight to twelve months. 4. Never burn rubbish, driftwood or painted or treated wood. These pollute the air and can produce poisonous gases. 5. When lighting a cold heater, use plenty of dry kindling to establish a good fire quickly. Use several small logs rather than one large log and stack them loosely in your heater, so air can circulate around them. Don't cram the firebox full. Keep the flame lively and bright. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. Open the air controls fully for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after reloading the heater. Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from the chimney, increase the air supply to your fire. Have the chimney cleaned every year to prevent creosote build-up. If you are buying a wood heater, make sure it has a compliance plate showing it meets the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 4013).

Just three months after applications for the Regional Seniors Travel Card opened, the popular initiative has had more than 300,000 applications across regional NSW.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said it was fantastic to see the keen response to year two of the trial of the $250 pre-paid Visa card, which benefited more than 337,500 seniors and their communities in 2020. “The Regional Seniors Travel Card was a commitment we made before the 2019 NSW election, and I’m proud to say it’s one we have delivered for the people of regional NSW,” Mr Toole said. “The card has been an overwhelming success, as shown by the latest figures for our region: “This is great news for regional seniors and another way we are injecting money into the bush with the benefit flowing for fuel stations, taxi drivers and local economies.” Mr Toole said it was exciting to see such high interest in the second year of the trial, which puts $250 into the pockets of eligible seniors to spend on pre-booked NSW TrainLink, regional train and coach services, fuel, and taxis. “The card helps ease the burden of travel costs for eligible seniors in regional, rural and remote areas of NSW, making it easier and more affordable for them to travel,” Mr Toole said. “We know how much seniors value this card – it can mean the difference between an extra few trips to visit grandkids, the ease of seeing friends locally or just getting to the shops or attending medical appointments. “The card injected more than $60 million into regional economies in the first year of the trial, putting money in local cash registers at a time when it was needed the most.

TRAVEL CARD: Member for Bathurst Paul Toole, right, with Sam Farraway MLC: “Just three months after applications for the Regional Seniors Travel Card opened, the popular initiative has had more than 300,000 applications across regional NSW”.

“Not only is this card a game changer for regional seniors , it’s another way we are injecting money into the bush with the benefit flowing to fuel stations, taxi drivers and local economies.” Eligible seniors have until 30 November 2021 to apply. Seniors must be an age pensioner with a valid

Pensioner Concession Card or hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card issued by either the Department of Human Services or Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Applications for the card can be made online at www.service. nsw.gov.au, by calling 13 77 88 or by visiting a Service NSW Service Centre.

PAGODA JOURNEY FORUM Last weekend saw the official opening of a poignant local exhibition of one of the regions most under utilised natural assets, the Pagodas.

10

Pagoda Country – the ‘Pagoda Journey Forum’ is being held at the Gallery as part of this exhibition. The forum will provide an opportunity to hear of the treasures tucked away in the country earmarked for protection under the Destination Pagodas proposal1. It will provide insight into the unique landscape, the amazing range of flora within it, the efforts that have been made to protect it to date, and the potential for the regional economy that the Destination Pagodas proposal provides. As a highlight in the forum, you will hear a conversation between a curator and two acclaimed artists relating to the inspiration they derive from the landscape, an insight into the visceral response all feel when connecting to wild beauty. The Destination Pagodas’ State Conservation Zone proposal will effectively create a park under which legacy mining activity will continue. At the same time, new age energy initiatives are appearing in the region whilst traditional power generators continue their operation, all part of a transition. To close the forum there will be a reflection on this transition, a presentation on renewable energy, and what is happening locally – The Lithgow Community Power Project.

This is Rudyard Kipling’s famous short story about Daniel Dravot and Peachy Carnehan, two ambitious and adventurous ex-sergeants who have just completed their tour of duty in India. Having decided that the country is too small for the likes of them and so with 20 rifles and ammunition, they head off to Kafiristan, near Afghanistan to overthrow the ruler and loot the country. The story continues involving battles and a discovery of a great amount of gold and jewels. Nevertheless the story has unexpected and surprising consequences. STORYTIME FROM SPACE!

Imagine astronauts reading stories from space to children & families in an exciting event that combines literature with science!

ALIA along with Scholastic, the Australian Space Agency, Story Time From Space and the Office of the Chief Scientist invites you to join an intergalactic Storytime experience. The National Simultaneous Storytime 2021 book will be read by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker on the International Space Station. Lithgow Library is thrilled to be participating in this special event with a space themed Storytime in the library, on Wednesday 19 May 2021, at 10.30am. At 11am Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang libraries will join in the National event with Dr Walker reading the NSS book “Give Me Some Space” by Philip Bunting. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. In its 21st year NSS has truly gone out of this world to celebrate and Lithgow Library is very excited to be part of this outstanding event. Storytime is free and is held every Wednesday at 10.30am in Lithgow Library and every Tuesday at 10.30am at Wallerawang Library. No bookings are required for National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 19 May 2021 starting at 10.30am in Lithgow and at 11am at Portland and Wallerawang. For more information contact Lithgow Library on 6352 9100 or go to the library webpage www.library.lithgow.com.

LITHGOW ARMY CADETS REMEMBER ON ANZAC DAY On a chilling, late into April, but an early Sunday morning, 220 Lithgow Army Cadets assembled to provide a Catafalque Party or Guard to support the Portland RSL’s Dawn Service. Story and Photo Supplied

It was a change from the driveway services of last year but still in midst of a pandemic local youths participated to remember those who gave their lives or had their lives forever changed, to protect us today. There were no hymns but the large crowd paid their respects, nonetheless, to the fallen and returned. The Army Cadets remained disciplined and performed their drill, as trained, to honour those who have worn the uniform before them. Later that day, for the main service, the same Army Cadets performed a 2nd time showing there commitment to the community. Well done to the Army Cadets. Lest We Forget. The Australian Army Cadets (AAC) provides a personal development program for young people and is conducted by the Australian Army in cooperation with the community and aims to benefit the nation by developing individuals and their communities. The AAC adopts the values of the Australian Army – Courage, Initiative, Respect and Teamwork – to empower youth to achieve their potential. There are more than 17,500 Army Cadets based in over 240 units around Australia. They are supported by 1250 Adult Cadet Staff and the Australian Army. The 220 Army Cadet Unit is an organisation which has been in some form in the Lithgow community for more than 80 years. 220ACU runs activities which involve leadership, first aid, adventuring in the bush, navigation, radio communication, survival, ceremonial drill and water activities. Skills that are taught are used by the Australian Defence Force personnel and can be used throughout life

20

in employment and leisure. These activities are conducted in fun and safe environments with the aim of developing youth to be self-reliant and resilient through challenging outdoor participation. 220 Army Cadet Unit meet on NSW Public School Term Thursday evenings from 6.30pm until 9.30pm at the Marrangaroo Army Base at the end of Reserve Road. Anyone aged between 13 and 17 years of age is welcome to join and should bring a water bottle, pen and notepad on their first night.

All interested parents/guardians and applicants are encouraged to browse the information on their website www.armycadets.gov.au. For users of Facebook, contact can be made through this medium. Search: ‘220 Australian Army Cadet Unit Lithgow’. Alternatively if you cannot find an answer to your question about Army Cadets, phone Captain (AAC) Adrian Markson on 0458-643-313 for further information.

community BEAUTIFUL MADNESS ON SHOW AT STATE MINE Issue 358 - 7th May 2021

Artist Gerard Brown, better known as Le Grizz, opened the doors to his studio at the state mine museum last weekend for his show Beautiful Madness.

There was great support throughout the weekend as people visited the show which has already seen over half the work sold. Le Grizz’s artwork is provocative and fun, full of bright colours and an alternate view on the world, and as the title of the show alludes, gives an insight into the beautiful madness that exists inside the brain of an artist. The show will be on again this weekend at he State Mine Museum, from 12 - 5pm this Saturday For more information and a show catalogue visit https://legrizz.com

MAJOR FUNDING FOR PORTLAND MEN’S SHED Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today announced $221,497 will be provided to undertake major upgrades to the Portland Men’s Shed.

Mr Toole said the funding is part of $2.23 million to be allocated across the State for improvements to men’s sheds on Crown land under the NSW Government’s COVID-19 stimulus program.

“Men’s sheds such as the one at Portland are community-based organisations that do a fantastic job by providing a welcoming environment to work on projects and make friends in their local area,” Mr Toole said. “They support men to gather to share their skills, knowledge and experience which helps keeps them active and productive. “The $221,497 in stimulus funding will be used to upgrade the Mick Moore Pavilion at the Showground. “Improvements and upgrades will include installing a kitchen with new plumbing and appliances, air conditioning, solar power panels, a disabled toilet and ramp, a security roller door, new electric wiring and lighting, and building lining and insulation.” Mr Toole said the Portland Men’s Shed received $19,800 in 2020 to fix the old cement floor in the Mick Moore Pavilion, effectively stopping water getting into the building and impacting on its foundations. Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said $1 million would be provided this financial year and $1.23 million next financial year for priority upgrade work to a range of men’s sheds across NSW. “Men’s shed are places where men can hang out with mates, learn to build things, pass on skills, and give back to their local community,” Mrs Pavey said.

PORTLAND PENSIONERS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY

SHOOSH: Member for Bathurst Paul Toole: “I look forward to our local sports clubs getting behind this initiative and reminding parents and spectators that poor behaviour will not be tolerated”.

SHOOSH FOR KIDS THIS WINTER Poor spectator behaviour at junior sport is set to be addressed throughout the coming winter, with the Shoosh for Kids Winter Awareness Month taking place this May. I would really encourage local clubs and associations to support this state-wide message, with more than 600 clubs across NSW already committed. We want to see kids have a positive experience no matter what sport they are participating in. I look forward to our local sports clubs getting behind this initiative and reminding parents and spectators that poor behaviour will not be tolerated. This campaign is timely with the recommencement of winter sport seasons across the State. With a full season to look forward to this winter, the Shoosh for Kids message is more important than ever. It’s great to see larger crowds and families back at community sport, and we all have a responsibility to ensure it is a fun, safe environment for children. One of the best ways we can do this is to keep comments positive so that kids want to keep playing and enjoying the benefits that sport offers.

December 2020 Presentation

Acting president of the Portland Pensioners association, Sue Hardwick, handed out the final community grants from the association following the sale of their School of Arts building in March 2020. The association called for expressions of intent from local community groups and were able to assist a large number of those and still keep a small sum in reserve for a future project. The first round of announcements were presented in December with the final announcements being made this week. Long time member Sue Piggott said it was a sad day for the association and she will miss all the friendships, but urged members of the pensioners to keep doing what they were doing in the community. Clr Maree Statham also thanked Sue Hardwick for stepping into the role of acting President to manage the distribution of the funds. The groups gifted money were all very grateful and are able to use the funds to support the work they are doing in the community for many years to come.

We know that young people thrive with positive adult role models and the Shoosh for Kids initiative reinforces positive, supportive behaviours in sport.

Funds were donated to the following organisation: •

Portland SES : Big tv online training, doing up the office Portland RFS : Cages that uniforms can be hung in Portland Golf Club : Roof over kitchen stop leaks Portland CWA : Air conditioning in the rooms with security doors and blinds and other renovations Portland Bowing Club : Renovations in the kitchen and facilities at the bowling club Portland Tidy Towns : Beautification of main street of Portland Blinky Bill Pre School : Renovate the outdoor shed to a multipurpose specialist area. VIEW CLUBS CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO RECONNECT AS COVID RESTRICTIONS EASE

Lithgow VIEW Club is calling on members of the community to consider volunteering for children’s education charity, The Smith Family, as part of National Volunteer Week (17-23 May).

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s organisation with 300 clubs across Australia, all dedicated to supporting children in need with their education through The Smith Family. Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness, and volunteering. This year, one of the key themes for National Volunteer Week is ‘reconnection’, which Lithgow VIEW Club President Sue Giokaris said is more important than ever before. “Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that hands-on connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people. “Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families,” she said. Members of Lithgow VIEW Club volunteer for The Smith Family. Sue Giokaris said “There are many opportunities for people to help out”. “We are always looking for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW.” The Smith Family’s Acting CEO, Judy Barraclough, said volunteers were integral to delivering much-needed educational support to disadvantaged children and their families. “I thank all VIEW members for their tireless efforts in advocating for and supporting the important work of The Smith Family. “By donating your time, talent, and expertise, we’re able to continue to provide critical education support to thousands of disadvantaged Australian children and their families. Artworks were installed all around the hotel including illustrations and paintings, challenging the senses at every angle. The night included music performances by the artists as well as local Digeribone player, Charlie McMahon. It was a great night for the hotel supporting local artists, and hopefully the first of many more to come.
