LITHGOW TIDY TOWNS' ANZAC DISPLAY It is over a century since World War 1 erupted on the world stage with Australia’s involvement most remembered for the Gallipoli campaign and the trench warfare on the Western Front.

The installation became an immediate attraction to locals and visitors and will be in place for two weeks.

However, Australia still remembers the service and sacrifice of our soldiers and nurses in this campaign and other campaigns over 100 years and Lithgow Tidy Towns has installed a 2021 tribute to these brave servicemen and women. Thank you to the Lithgow Men’s Shed for the cut outs of soldiers and nurses, to George Quinell for the artwork on the Australia map and to our members for the installation in the laneway. Thank you also to the support of Lithgow City Council.

LITHGOW COUNCIL ROUNDUP

BUSHFIRE RECOVERY IMPROVEMENTS TO BOOST REGIONS SAFETY AND RESILIENCE Lithgow City Council has been successful in two applications under the Bushfire Community Recovery & Resilience Fund (BCRRF) – Stream 2 for a total of $600,000 in important safety projects in the wake of the Gospers Mountain fire emergency.

The critical funding boost will deliver infrastructure investments and upgrades to the Civic Ballroom for emergency response. A second project will develop emergency preparedness and recovery capacity in an Emergency Evacuation Plan for the Wolgan Valley. Lithgow City Council Mayor Ray Thompson welcomed the news, describing the funding as essential to Lithgow’s emergency access and response. “This is fantastic news. This funding can support a safer, faster and more efficient response to people affected by emergency.” he said.

“We will be able to upgrade the Civic Ballroom and facilities, ensuring the Tony Luchetti precinct remains a key asset well into the future.” Emergency access for residents along the 33.56km length of the Wolgan Road was hampered during the Gospers Mountain bushfire with rock falls, fallen trees and fire ground conditions a significant safety concern. “Our landscape is beautiful but it presents challenges in times of emergency. We need evacuation strategies that take into account the challenging environment.” “We always need to be preparing for worst-case scenarios. These are important strategic projects that will provide much-needed benefit to our local communities and relief during times of crisis, including floods and bushfires,” he concluded.” Council will keep residents and community members informed on next steps and time frames. The Stream 2 funding comes after Lithgow City Council received $250,000 in Stream 1 of the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF) and is being provided through the jointly funded CommonwealthState Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

BUSHFIRE COMMUNITY RECOVERY AND RESILIENCE FUND SUPPORTS MINGAAN WIRADJURI ABORIGINAL COUNCIL LITHGOW’S Mingaan Wiradjuri Aboriginal Council are set to benefit from joint Government funding as part of the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF).

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today announced funding of $300,000 for Mingaan to promote community wellbeing and build disaster resilience in the region. He said the Maiyingu Marragu (Black Fellows Hands) – Bushfire Recovery Work aims to repair damage by natural disasters including the Gospers Mountain Fire. “The unsealed Blackfellows Hand Trail which runs off the Wolgan Road is in a horrendous state and barely passable,” Mr Toole said. “It’s badly rutted and needs major works to get it back to a trafficable state. The Black Fellows Hands Cave is an important location for the Wiradjuri people and is also a popular tourist attraction, so it’s repair is important as

part of the bushfire recovery process.” Mr Toole said the NSW Government is building a safer and stronger regional NSW by continuing to deliver funding to bushfire affected communities. Deputy Premier and Minister for Disaster Recovery John Barilaro said projects such as Maiyingu Marragu will provide an important boost for local communities with a focus on long-term recovery efforts. “The Nationals are building a safer and stronger regional NSW by helping communities get back on their feet after the worst bushfires in living memory. This funding will support the ongoing, sustained efforts on the ground as communities continue to rebuild,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Government has committed $4.4 billion to bushfire recovery with every bushfire affected LGA receiving support. These recovery efforts have been driven by locals like the Mingaan Wiradjuri Land Council who care about their community and want to make a difference and we are continuing to assist them through this process.”

Lions Club of Bathurst Macquarie is seeking additional stallholders for future market days. First Saturday of each month at Lions Berry Park, Bathurst Come and be part of the markets. Further Details Email: macquarielions@gmail.com facebook.com/riversidemarketsbathurst

ALGWA NSW – LEADING THE WAY IN ADDRESSING THE GENDER IMBALANCE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT If more women are in leadership roles, especially in politics, we will stop assuming they shouldn’t be. The first and most important level of Government in my opinion is local. Five former Australian Prime Ministers were at one time local councillors.

Four weeks ago, the Prime Minister called for an increase in the number of women entering politics. I agree. I am President of the NSW branch of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association [ALGWA NSW] which is an organisation devoted to encouraging and supporting women to stand for election to their local councils. The only way we are going to change the culture which is currently playing out in the federal sphere is to increase the number of women politicians at every level of government. That is why since the 20 February 2021, every weekend, the ALGWA NSW Executive and I have been leading the way, crisscrossing the state conducting Getting Women Elected Forums, actively encouraging women to become candidates at the upcoming 4th September Local Government Elections. Lane Cove City Council was the most recent council to host ALGWA NSW to run a Getting Women Elected Forum, at the invitation of Lane Cove Mayor Cr. Pam Palmer, who said, “Lane Cove has had some famous

female councillors, including Marjorie Propsting who founded ALGWA in 1951. It was therefore an irresistible opportunity for Lane Cove to have ALGWA NSW’s current President, Cassandra, and other ALGWA NSW Executive members here to encourage more local women to stand for council at the next elections. I was delighted to see so many women sign up to attend the event, both in person and on-line, especially in these challenging times for women in politics.” ALGWA NSW will continue Getting Women Elected tour with at least another 10 Councils booked in across NSW prior to the NSW Local Government elections.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE DRIVE DAY TURNS HEADS AND CHANGES MINDS

The EV’s were here for the Lithgow Community Power Project’s first Electric Vehicle Drive Day, which provided Councillors and business owners with an opportunity to experience the new technology first-hand. ‘It was a great day,’ said Greg Mortimer, convenor of the LCPP. ‘We had the Mayor and Council’s General Manager, several Councillors and staff, Main Street business owners and locals come along for the ride.’ The Drive Day is part of a program to develop a strategy for EV charging infrastructure in collaboration with Lithgow City Council. The plan is to start with the parking precincts around Lithgow’s Main Street to coincide with the next stages of the Main Street Revitalisation program, before embarking on a long-term strategy for the entire Lithgow LGA. ‘Main Street is a priority because it will potentially enable energy feeds for future charging to be incorporated into any new footpath reconstruction,’ said Dr Michelle Zeibots, a local transport planner and Senior Lecturer from the University of Technology Sydney who will undertake the study with Council and a team of UTS researchers. ‘Public works like this only come around every 40 to 50 years, so it’s important to be strategic and make the most of the opportunity when it occurs,’ she said. Analysis for the strategy will take on board the need to strike a balance between parking for EV charging and vehicles with internal combustion engines, off-street and on-street parking, growth in charging needs over time and access for residents living without at-home charging options. Dr Zeibots facilitated a group discussion after the drive with input from EV experts at the Lithgow Workies. ‘We surveyed everyone attending the Drive Day, and experiencing EV’s first hand clearly makes a difference to how people think about them,’ said Dr Zeibots. ‘Perceptions around vehicle performance change once people have

gone for a drive with many feeling EV’s are better than vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.’ Research shows that around 90 per cent of all EV charging takes place overnight at home, making it a bit like charging your mobile phone according to one EV owner attending the Drive Day. With several car manufacturers announcing that they will cease mass production of petrol driven passenger cars by 2030, an EV future isn’t far away. Activity on social media following the Drive Day has been strong, with some of it positive and some negative. ‘There’s been a call for e-Bike charging to be included in the strategy,’ said Dr Zeibots. ‘That’s something we will now do.’

Community reaction to the event included concerns about Council funding priorities. However, funding for EV charging will most likely come from dedicated EV charging programs initiated by state and federal governments — funding that won’t be available to Lithgow if we don’t have strategy. ‘We want our region to be ready to take advantage of these special funding opportunities when they come online,’ said Mr Mortimer. ‘That way Lithgow won’t get left behind.’ Keep an eye out on the Lithgow Community Power Project Facebook page for dates of the next EV Drive Day.

GET INVOLVED IN A HERITAGE GARDEN PROJECT AT ESKBANK HOUSE MUSEUM

Eskbank House Museum is looking to bring together a small group of gardening enthusiasts to participate in a project to develop and nurture a heritage garden at the museum. Drawing from historical references the project will create a 19th century garden that was typical during the time Mary Brown lived at the property. The project will involve gardening workshops, field trips, talks and hands on gardening. The garden will also be made accessible to participants 5 days a week so they can spend as much time pottering as they wish. Gardening workshops and working bees, including establishing an edible garden, and working with environmental challenges and risk, will be led by Jessica Lawn from Arborvitae. As a horticulturist and arborist experiences with heritage gardens throughout the Blue Mountains region, Jessica has cared for many gardens at risk and nurtured their recovery following periods of drought and fires. Registration closes Wednesday 12 May 2021. The first group meeting is scheduled for the week commencing 17 May 2021 and we are particularly interested in engaging fire affected or at risk residents. The group will meet regularly for working-bees to establish the garden and for seasonal planting. Field trips, expert talks and skills sharing will also provide opportunities to enhance wellbeing outcomes. This project is funded under the Bushfire Community Resilience and Recovery Fund. news 7 MAJOR MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN SELLING TO A POTENTIAL CLIENT Better business column by Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“Approach each customer with the idea of helping him or her to solve a problem or achieve a goal, not of selling a product or service.” – Brian Tracy If you are in business then you are in sales and many business owners make some common mistakes when selling to potential clients. Lets face it, most business owners wear so many caps that if they are not comfortable with selling they do anything to avoid it. However, the sales function is critical to the success of any organisation and if the business owner is unable to learn to sell they MUST outsource it or go out of business. The following is 7 major mistakes to avoid when selling to a potential client: 1.

Fail to close the sale. Many people simply don’t close the sale. They give a great sales presentation. The potential client shows interest but they are not asked if they would like to purchase the product or service on offer. At the end of your presentation ask for the sale.

2. A poor presentation or demonstration. Practice, practice, practice! The more you present the better you will get. Ask for feedback on your presentation especially from people who didn’t buy. Ensure your demonstration runs smoothly especially if it a technical product or software. If it doesn’t look like it is user friendly it will be hard to sell. Have a backup demo if technology lets you down. 3. Over-talking or under-talking. It takes practice to get this just right. I tend to lean to being an overtalker and have to consciously focus on being an active listener. A PowerPoint presentation helps me to ensure I don’t under-talk as it lists everything I need to cover in my sales presentation. 4.

Arguing with the customer. Never get into an argument with a potential client and always respect their point of view. As soon as you get defensive and go on the attack you will lose them as a customer anyway. If you handle the situation calmly and graciously they may come back to you later on down the track.

5.

A negative attitude. If you don’t believe in your product or service then you have not a chance of selling it. Be passionate and positive about what you offer and your company. Always smile and never let a client see that you may be feeling down. When you start believing in yourself then your clients will also believe in you.

6. Selling to the wrong person. Ensure you are presenting to the decision maker or someone who can influence the decision maker. If you are selling to the wrong person write it off as experience and another opportunity to practice your sales skills. 7. Making false claims. Never lie or exaggerate to a potential client as you will always be found out. If you found out after the sale the unhappy customer will tell many others of their experience dealing with you. Your reputation is everything and only takes a few keystrokes on social media to destroy it. Avoiding these 7 mistakes will increase your sales success and don’t forget to practice your sales presentation and actively listen to what your potential clients are saying. If you can’t help them then recommend someone else to them who can. "Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individual;s core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them.

Issue 356 - 23th April 2021

WEALTH EFFECT: FUTURE’S SO BRIGHT, I GOTTA WEAR SHADES We have some good news. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded its global growth forecasts for 2021 to record levels. This news, combined with rising share markets and booming local house prices, should have a positive impact on the confidence of retirees.

When we see our super balances and house prices rise it can be tempting to spend more. And spending more might be the right thing to do. But retirees have other options to improve their longterm financial positions when things are going well.

Record global growth

Economic confidence has returned around the world. With vaccination rollouts well-advanced in the US and Europe and summer approaching in the northern hemisphere, it feels like there’s an end in sight. People can finally see a way out of the pandemic. This optimism, along with the enormous government stimulus packages, is fueling the economic recovery with unexpected energy. The IMF’s global growth outlook for 2021 is a record 6 per cent. That will more than cover the economic contraction of 2020, which the IMF now estimates was -3.3 per cent.

Here in Australia, the IMF now expects the economy to grow 4.5 per cent in 2021.

Wealth effect

The economic recovery is having a positive impact on share markets and our super balances, which are sitting at record highs. Our homes are worth more too, with record low interest rates and relaxed lending standards creating unprecedented buyer demand. When we feel wealthier, we have a tendency to spend more. It’s a behavioural shift known as the ‘wealth effect’. It’s not a bad thing. In retirement it’s important to be flexible, and we should adjust our spending from time-to-time when circumstances change. And that includes spending more when things are going well for you.

Building long-term certainty

But this may be an opportunity to be smarter than that. Markets rise and markets fall, and retirement is long. Perhaps you should be taking the opportunity to rebalance your investments at inflated prices to replenish your short-term cash reserves. Maybe the strong economic conditions present the opportunity to reduce the structural risk within your investments. We tend to get more conservative as we get older, and you may be taking risks that aren’t required anymore. If you’d like to learn more about how to make the most of the strong economic outlook, give us a call. We’d love to help. Daniel Crump is the founder of Daniel Crump Financial Planning. HISTORIC TREE NEEDING REMOVAL QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK, LITHGOW Lithgow has a lovely stock of established trees. They are part of the city’s appeal and character. But unfortunately, they have a finite lifetime. To ensure that they are managed without causing hazards to people the Council undertakes regular inspections.

The trees in Queen Elizabeth Park were recently inspected. An expert arborist undertook the investigation and provided a condition assessment and report on the health and risk of the large trees, including the elms located on the footpath between Main Street & Queen Elizabeth Park. While some trees will only require general maintenance, with the removal of dead wood, two trees are so dangerous that they must be removed due to imminent risk of failing. One tree has presented with major splitting at the base and is at risk of falling

over the public toilet and Main Street. Clearly, pedestrians and motorists are at risk. Immediate action already taken includes the bracing of the at-risk tree with emergency strapping. This should provide short term strengthening. Council will be engaging a contractor to remove the trees as a priority. This removal will occur in the first week of May. Given the significant removal process there will be some managed disruption to traffic flow along Main Street. Works may be scheduled at night to minimise this. In the meantime, Council will be installing fencing to restrict access to the immediate area underneath the canopy of the tree. Access to the pedestrian crossing adjacent to the Theatre Royale will remain, however access to seating and the adjacent amenities will be restricted. All pedestrians and park users are advised to comply with the closure and signage and ensure they do not linger in the area. Council recognises the significance of this tree. It is sad that it must be removed. Council aims to at least replace the tree with smaller, lower impact species, within the bounds of Queen Elizabeth Park. But we are also seeking ideas from the community about other means by which to offset this loss. If you have any suggestions then please write or email to council@lithgow.nsw.gov.au or in writing to PO Box 19, Lithgow NSW 2790.

WOOLWORTHS GIVES LITHGOW SCHOOLS THE CHANCE TO RECEIVE FREE FRUIT

...against intruders, noise, storms and heat!

6351 2518

www.easyviewblinds.com.au info@easyviewblinds.com.au 52 ENFIELD AVE, LITHGOW Master Licence No: 410484143

To celebrate Woolworths’ milestone of 100 million pieces of free fruit being given to kids in store, primary schools and early learning centres across Lithgow can now apply for the chance to receive free fruit for each of their students for a day.

Helping to build fresh fruit habits from an early age, the community program was the first national initiative of its kind when it began in 2015, offering apples, bananas, and when in season pears and mandarins. Woolworths estimates more than 14,000 tonnes of free fruit have been eaten by kids since the program launched - the equivalent to filling more than six Olympic sized swimming pools. With 41% of children aged 4 - 8 not receiving their daily recommended intake of one and a half servings of fruit, the free fruit for schools is aimed at helping get even more fruit into students’ diets. 39% of kids in NSW aged 5 - 15 are not eating the daily recommended intake of fruit. 53 Brendan Edwards Woolworths NSW Store Manager said: “As a way to celebrate our milestone of 100 million pieces of fruit to kids, we want to further encourage healthy eating habits and help students get their daily recommended intake of fruit.

“We encourage all schools and early learning centres in Lithgow to apply for their chance to receive free fruit for each student for a day. Parents and kids are also encouraged to pick up a free piece of fruit the next time they visit us in store.” Following Woolworths’ Australian-first sourcing policy, 100% of the fruit given away is from local suppliers, like Mackay Bananas in Queensland and Montague Apples in Victoria. Tony Alcock, a 2nd generation Alcock Bananas grower said: “As a family-owned, Aussie business, we’re all about taking positive steps to ensure kids build a love for fruit. “We’re thrilled to know so many of our bananas have brought tasty nutrition to many kids over the last five years through Woolworths Free Fruit for Kids program.” Applications to receive free fruit for students are now open. Up to 100 primary schools or early learning centres will be given enough fruit to hand out to each student for one day. To find out more about Woolworths Free Fruit for Kids schools initiative and to apply, visit woolworths.com. au/fruitforschools. Woolworths also invests in other long standing community programs that support the wellbeing and education of children, including Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours, our partnership with Life Education and Woolworths Junior Landcare grants. Further, Woolworths supports junior sporting initiatives and organisations via partnerships in Cricket, Netball and Surfing and lastly, through the Woolworths Discovery Garden collection.

BUSHFIRE COMMUNITY RECOVERY AND RESILIENCE FUND SUPPORTS EVACUATION CENTRE FOR LITHGOW Lithgow’s Civic Ballroom is set to be upgraded so it can be used as an emergency evacuation centre for the city.

The $300,000 project is being made possible as a result of Government funding as part of the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF). Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today announced the funding for Lithgow City Council to carry out the necessary modifications to the Civic Ballroom. “The catalyst for the LEARN (Lithgow Emergency Access and Resilience Network) project came as a result of the bushfires of late 2019-20 when the Civic Ballroom was opened as an emergency evacuation centre,” Mr Toole said. “It was then deemed unsuitable for this use, but with NSW Government support the necessary upgrades will

ensure the builidng in the grounds of the Tony Luchetti Sportsground can better respond and support residents in times of need.” Mr Toole said the NSW Government is building a safer and stronger regional NSW by continuing to deliver funding to bushfire affected communities. Deputy Premier and Minister for Disaster Recovery John Barilaro said initiatives such as Lithgow’s LEARN project will provide an important boost for local communities with a focus on long-term recovery efforts. “The Nationals are building a safer and stronger regional NSW by helping communities get back on their feet after the worst bushfires in living memory. This funding will support the ongoing, sustained efforts on the ground as communities continue to rebuild,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Government has committed $4.4 billion to bushfire recovery with every bushfire affected LGA receiving support.”

Issue 356 - 23th April 2021 Saturday 24th April on Prime7 at 7:00pm

Being a fan of a good “end of the world” drama, this is certainly a great offering. Starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet and Danny Glover Dr. Adrian Helmsley (Ejiofor), part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect on the earth of radiation from unprecedented solar storms, learns that the earth's core is heating up. He warns U.S. President Thomas Wilson (Glover) that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and that without proper preparations for saving a fraction of the world's population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis (Cusack) stumbles on the same information. While the world's leaders race to build "arks" to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Meanwhile, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented strength wreak havoc around the world.

ARTS OUTWEST FINDS ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO SUPPORT HUGE DEMAND FOR MICRO GRANTS From 90 applications Arts OutWest will distribute 27 Micro Grants to the value of $36,340 to creatives and arts groups across the Central West region.

The regional arts development organisation bumped up the initial funding to try to accommodate such high demand for support. “We had a truly overwhelming response to this year’s micro grants program with so many excellent proposals,” Arts OutWest executive director Tracey Callinan said. “It showed the real, often very personal and specific need for support for regional creatives but also the abundance of positive new ideas being explored.” The bulk of funding will be covered by the NSW Government’s Arts Restart ($24,000) with extra from Arts OutWest’s Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support funding from the Australian Government ($6,000) and Arts OutWest’s own funds ($6,340). Grants range from $450 to $2000. “That still leaves many worthy applications unfunded so we are now planning a fundraising campaign specifically to support more micro grant requests, we’ll announce details soon,” Ms Callinan said. “We're also actively looking at other ways to support as many of the applicants as possible through our other activities in the region.” Funded activities range from equipment purchases by individual artists, to artist fees for upcoming local

festivals like the Festival of Bells and Bathurst Readers and Writers Festival, exploration and development of new work, hands-on community activities that employ local artists, to kick-starting a community narrow-cast radio station in Grenfell. These 27 funded projects and activities will contribute to the immediate employment of arts workers and creatives, in line with the priorities of the NSW Government's Arts Restart funding. Arts OutWest’s Arts Restart Micro Grants were offered with a quick turn-around time-frame to boost arts and economic activity in the region. Activities have to be completed by June.

SENIORS STORYTELLERS ARE UNDERWAY The first in a series of storytelling workshops took place last Thursday at the Library. The series is a celebration of Senior’s Week and there are still places available!

Local Storyteller Kiran Shan ran the first of three workshops which are being held at the library to celebrate

Senior’s week. It was an opportunity to connect with each other and ourselves and discover our stories. There are still places available so call the library today to book your spot. There will also be an open microphone performance on April 29th where senior’s are encouraged to come and share their stories, poems or a song. Everyone is welcome. For more information and to book your spot call the library on 63529100. This project proudly supported by the NSW government.

COMMUNITY BUILDING PARTNERSHIP FUND IS OPEN It’s great to be able to announce that applications are now open for the 2021 Community Building Partnership program, unlocking $27.9 million for community infrastructure projects across NSW. On this occasion $300,000 is available for projects in each NSW electorate, including Bathurst, and I would urge local councils and not-for-profit groups to apply for the funds they need to deliver projects with social, environmental and recreational outcomes. Local sports clubs, charities, schools and museums are just some of the groups that benefit from this program. If your organisation or club needs extra funding for infrastructure, such as playgrounds, accessible features, equipment or refurbishment, then I’d strongly encourage you to apply. The Community Building Partnership program has awarded more than $362 million to over 16,600 projects since it commenced in 2009. This program means that you can support your community group to improve the places you meet, train or play. Please take the time to prepare and submit your application so your community group doesn’t miss out on a share of $300,000. Applications are open from Monday 19 April and close at 5pm, Friday 14 May 2021. Applicants must read the program guidelines to ensure their club or organisation and proposed project are eligible. AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE ANNOUNCES AUSTRALIA-WIDE TOUR FOR 2021 : “A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME” After a well-earned break, Australia’s largest scale Pink Floyd concept act Echoes of Pink Floyd are pleased to announce their allnew show for 2021.

Entitled “A Journey Through Time”, the Adelaidebased band’s latest show will take audiences on a musical and visual journey from Pink Floyd’s earliest days as darlings of 1960’s London’s psychedelic underground, all the way to their 1990’s powerhouse performances as the undisputed masters of stadium rock. In addition, the show will provide insight into the amazing evolution of the seminal English prog rockers throughout their history. The searing, soaring music and heart-wrenching but deeply contemplative lyrics reflecting Pink Floyd’s own journey as they charted their way through life’s twists and turns, triumphs and disappointments. Audiences will be treated to an extensive exploration of the band’s impressive catalogue as the gang from Echoes of Pink Floyd plays all of Pink Floyd’s biggest smash hits, as well as some lovingly hand-picked deep album cuts designed to please the most committed of hard-core fans. The show will tour extensively throughout Australia’s capital cities and regional centres and will engage the community in each town with young local performers to provide the memorable “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” choir. Formed in 2009 and with thousands of hours of rehearsal and live performance behind them, Echoes

of Pink Floyd comprises a six-piece band featuring Daniel Hunter on lead guitar; Jason Miller on drums; Tony Coppola on bass; Paul Bindig on keyboards and synthesisers; Mark MacNab on rhythm and acoustic guitar and Matt Goodluck on lead vocals. The band’s aim is to authentically replicate the brilliant sights and sounds of one of the world’s greatest progressive rock bands of all time, Pink Floyd. The Adelaide-based tribute has been touring nationally since 2014, with audiences describing the show as “amazingly awesome” and “a musical and visual journey that never disappoints”, whilst also likening them to “the original band”. Echoes of Pink Floyd has also achieved critical acclaim with the music press describing them as “the next best thing to a genuine Floyd experience” [Bendigo Weekly], “a skilful celebration of the source material” [Upside News - Adelaide] and “a true credit to the original musicians” [Rogue Inc - Perth]. Echoes of Pink Floyd tour with a 4-metre light circle upon which a video show is projected at 6000 lumens’ intensity. The band perfectly synchronise their playing to the visuals to complete an experience that delivers the sights, sounds and emotions of a genuine Pink Floyd concert. Echoes of Pink Floyd’s Daniel Hunter says, “Each member of the band loves and respects what the original Pink Floyd gave to the world with their music. We want to bring this to life for the audience who may not have had a chance to experience a Pink Floyd concert, or wish to relive memories from their youth. “We aim to ensure every aspect of the original Pink Floyd music is captured authentically,” he adds. Drummer Jason Miller says, “At core, we are looking at the legacy of the music. Our vision and desire is to keep this music alive so it will be remembered for generations to come. We want to stand up as the next representatives of these guys in the 21st century, by being the truly authentic Pink Floyd concept show for Australia”.

YOUNG REFEREE MAKING HIS MARK

Another young referee looking at a big future, 15-year-old Stuart Halsey ran the line at the recent Wallerawang Landscaping Cup knockout tournament. Story and Pictures by John Fitzgerald.

Referees Anthony Boza, Jesse Sahyoun, Stuart Halsey and Lance Kelly

community

Under the watchful eye of referees’ representative Terry Sahyoun and in the company of experienced centre men Anthony Boza, Jesse Sahyoun and Lance Kelly, Stuart enjoyed the day as one of the line officials, running the line in a number of games. Previously a St Pats junior referee, and despite his age, 2021 is his third year in the refereeing ranks, initially refereeing leaguetag and under 13s games. From Eglinton he has just a short distance to travel to most of his games in Bathurst but as he gains more experience will probably need to travel further to engage as an official in competition games. Now on the brink of selection in higher grades Stuart would have received a good report from Terry Sahyoun, his day on the lines impressing the players and spectators alike at the knockout tournament at the CSU Diggings ground, his broken wrist no hindrance to his competent performances. The first round of Midwest Rugby League’s Wallerawang Landscaping Cup will commence next Saturday with a full round of matches.

DO YOU KNOW A LOCAL GROUP OR ORGANISATION DESERVING OF RECOGNITION IN RESILIENCE AND RECOVERY? Lithgow Council is urging local organisations and groups to apply for the NSW Get Ready Community award and the Resilient Australia Awards.

Coordinated by Resilience NSW, the NSW Get Ready Community Award will recognise a community that has worked together to make their community more prepared and better able to recover from disasters. The Resilient Australia Awards celebrate and promote initiatives that build whole of community resilience to disasters and emergencies around Australia, as well as images capturing resilience in action. These are managed by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR).

LITHGOW GARDEN CLUB Recognition for long serving member

The President of the Lithgow Garden Club has presented Lillian Gummow with a certificate of appreciation for her time given on every position on the Executive of the Club. Lillian is a founding member of the Club which began more than 20 years ago and is also a Life Member. Lillian is retiring from the executive but will remain a Committee member. Well done Lillian!

Lithgow City Council is aware of many local organisations and groups working on initiatives to help the Lithgow community better prepare for, respond to or recover from a disaster. Applying for these awards is one way of celebrating and sharing the inspiring initiatives that help the community. "The Lithgow Community has shown incredible resilience. We have many shining ambassadors who have shown enormous courage, collaboration and support for others and that's why we are encouraging local organisations and groups to apply for these prestigious awards," Mayor Ray Thompson said. THOUGHT OF THE WEEK BY ROZ TOWNSEND

Musing from Roz when is less more? Our experience with COVID-19 has brought many to the realisation that less is often more. This is because we frequently become overwhelmed and frozen with too much choice. We might think we would like to have lots of options, but experiments by psychologists like Barry Schwartz show that is not the case. In one experiment with a box of chocolates he found people felt happiest when there was only a choice of six rather than a choice of thirty chocolates. People were more satisfied when they could only choose between six chocolates.

When there is too much choice we begin to worry that we may choose the wrong one. The fear of missing out or making the wrong decision is a major concern for many. The average child in the west has more than 150 toys. And receives on average 70 more each year! This is overwhelming for them and they end up flitting from one from one to another without really engaging. Although the earlier paragraph was about children consider what you have as an adult and what it is that you really need. What are the ‘toys’ that you could move on or share with others who might be in greater need?
