Issue 354 - 9th April 2021

WE CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS REACH MORE LOCAL READERS EVERY WEEK FROM BLACKHEATH TO BATHURST Central West Media publishes two free weekly publications in the region, the Bathurst City Life on Wednesdays and the Lithgow Village Voice on Fridays.

PORTLAND TIDY TOWNS UNVEIL THEIR CEMENT WORKS MEMORIAL WALL Portland Tidy Towns unveiled the Memorial Wall they have been working towards for a number of years last Saturday on site at the Foundations.

The wall is dedicated to the memory of people who lost their lives working at the cement works throughout its history. There are 45 workers remembered on the wall after tragically losing their lives at what was once a very dangerous workplace. The first entry dates back to 1901, with the final entry in 1993 after the site had officially ceased operations and closure works were underway. The wall was officially opened and by Councillor Maree Statham who is also a member of the Tidy Towns

Committee. Councillor Statham invited members of the audience with a connection to the site to come forward and join in the unveiling. The opening was attended by well over 120 people many of whom travelled a great distance to remember family members the once lived and worked in Portland. The wall has been a labour of love for the Tidy Towns group following the release of a book in May 2016 following 2 years of research by group members Kaylin Caddis, Velma McFadden and Ken Bryce. The wall is the final piece in this tribute, one which is very important for the town. “It is one of the most moving things I have ever been involved with and it is very significant for our town,” said Mrs Caddis. The wall can be viewed on Williwa Street, next door to the Glen Museum.

Both our publications have loyal readerships and are the most cost effective way of reaching a truly local audience. If you are looking for a way to grow your business in 2020, speak to one of our friendly team and they will design a marketing plan that suits your budget and gets results.

Crews have been busy assessing the road damaged by last month's wild weather, and are patching significant potholes between Bell and Mount Tomah. After yesterday's geotechnical investigation revealed no further damage to Bells Line of Road since last week, we expect the road to reopen under traffic control within the next 48 hours. We know how important this road is both to locals and as a connection between Sydney and the Central West, and we’ve been working hard to ensure it is safe to reopen. While there’s still a lot of work to do to restore it to full capacity, crews will be working hard to keep communities up to date and connected.

news COUNTRY CRUISIN FOR CANCER THIS WEEKEND Issue 354 - 9th April 2021

With a sunny forecast, the annual Country Cruise for Cancer is set to be a fantastic event.

The cruise will be leaving from the Rockabilly Cafe on George Street Bathurst at 10am in a convoy. Cruising down the highway, the convoy will make its way to the new destination - The Foundations in Portland. All cars entering The Foundations will require an entry sticker. Entry stickers are $10 and can be prepurchased by contacting the organisers. If you haven’t yet purchased a sticker, they will be

available to purchase out the front of Rockabilly Cafe on Sunday morning, however the organisers would prefer if you prepurchase to keep inline with their Covid safe plan. All spectators on the day at The Foundations are asked for a gold coin donation for entry, with all proceeds going to Bathurst Can-Assist to directly help people affected by Cancer. There will be food vans, raffles and a silent auction, and plenty of amazing cars to check out. For all the details visit https://www.facebook.com/ CountryCruisinforCanAssist20/

news MASTERING ONESELF SELF-LEADERSHIP Better Business Column | By Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“Being a self-leader is to serve as chief, captain, president, or CEO of one’s own life” – Peter Drucker To be a successful leaders of others you first must master yourself through self-leadership. It sounds easy but in reality it is very difficult for many business owners to see themselves as leaders and set their own guidelines and expectations of how they should act and behave. Self-leadership is choosing who we are, how we live our lives, and consistently improving so that we can be the best version of ourselves. If we can’t meet the expectations that we set for ourselves, especially in the workplace, then we cannot expect our staff to meet those expectation either. For example, if you treat a client badly or have the habit of not returning phone calls, your staff see this and it would be difficult for them to take it seriously that a value of your company is putting the client first with exceptional customer service. If you have a volatile nature and explode at staff then they will act accordingly and do the same with fellow staff members, or worse, clients. We are not saying you need to be perfect but we are saying you need to set goals and align them with your values and beliefs to successfully achieve those goals. Analyse areas of personal weakness and consistently seek ways to improve yourself. Find mentors who can assist you with learning how to be a better leader. It is helpful if these mentors have already been successful in business and are willing to share with you their successes and their challenges. What was their daily, weekly and monthly routines? What vales and principles do they actively live by? A ‘natural leader’ is a myth. They are not born but made through years of experience and gaining knowledge through listening to others and making mistakes. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master. To master oneself, takes determination and the ability to work out who you want to be, who others see you as, and how that can be aligned with your business success. What habits do you need to develop in order to become the leader you wish to be? Once you work that out you can set your daily routine accordingly. Continuous learning is part of the process. Robin Sharma, a leadership guru encourages leaders to start their day at 5am and that small steps leads to stunning results. Creating just one extra hour per day to focus on self-improvement will make a huge difference in your ambition to achieve self-leadership. Change your mindset to being a leader and not a manager. Understand that your staff are looking to you as a role model so they know how they are expected to act and what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. As a successful self-leader you can then mentor and coach your staff about selfleadership as well. A company full of self-leaders is a powerful and effective organisation that will change the world in a positive and impactful way. "Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individual;s core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effecive and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision."

BIG EATER WEEKEND LIVES UP TO IT’S NAME

The small town of Portland, just 30 minutes down the road from Bathurst was a hive of activity over the Easter weekend.

The recently renovated Annexe building hosted two pop-up museums; the MOCZA display that will be there permanently in the very near future and the Australian Computer Museum Society that captured the imaginations of all ages that visited. The building itself was also a major drawcard as it has been closed off to the public for almost 4 decades. There was also a very successful weekend of fishing in the soon to be opened Millpond Trout Fishery, WIth approximately 60 fish caught in total over the four days, the catch and release fishery was well respected by all that visited and the organisers were very happy with the results and the way the public used the space on the property.

news The opening of the Cement Works memorial wall by the local Portland Tidy Towns group was a very respectful dedication to all the workers who were killed whilst working at the site during it’s active years, with families of victims travelling from all over the state to be part of the ceremony. The highlight of the weekend was the very successful night markets, which was very well attended by locals and visitors and was a great highlight for the local market stall holders who have been unable to run their stalls as normal since the outbreak of COVID in 2020. “This weekend is the third anniversary of @guidovanhelten starting work on the silos, the project that started this reactivation journey off. To look back on what has been achieved in that time and the positive feedback we received over the weekend is confirmation that the future in this small regional town is very bright indeed,” said a representative of the Foundations.

news COO-EE! A WALK FROM GILGANDRA TO SYDNEY

Issue 354 - 9th April 2021

By Pieter Lindhout

Following a 30 year career in the life insurance industry including terms as CEO at AMP, Tower and Suncorp, I shifted my focus from preparing people for an untimely death to a philanthropic endeavour to help Australians get more out of living. My various mentoring roles have given me exposure to, and inspiration from, many kind and socially minded Australians across commerce, charities and government. My heritage is proudly steeped in the area of service. Going back to the early part of the 20th century, I had three great uncles serving in WW1. This led to my interest in Australian history (particularly military) where I learned about an amazing story called the Cooee March. Inspired by their story in mid-March 2021 I will be departing Gilgandra in Western NSW and walking solo the original 520km Coo-ee March route (see below). My walk is about commemorating this patriotic and noble call to arms and is a tribute to the men who answered the call of “Coo-ee! Come and join us!”, and fell into line in the towns and villages along the route of the 320 miles (520 km) march, that left Gilgandra with 25 men on 10th October, 1915, and arrived in Martin Place, Sydney on 12th November, 1915 with 263 recruits. I’m keen to combine what I believe will be a fun yet challenging walk with doing a little bit to raise awareness of, and funding for mental health issues. A couple of years ago I wrote a book (“Love in the Valley of Death”) set around World War 1 and featured the amazing sacrifices of my great uncles Jack and Will Jensen and Sydney Campbell who fought at Gallipoli and the Western front and returned home with debilitating Post Traumatic Stress syndrome. This was a crippling, misunderstood and largely

unrecognised condition which defined their post war lives. What has been heartening over the last 100 years is how awareness of this and many other mental health conditions has leapt forward. There as so many great agencies and not-for-profits who are leading the charge here. So, for my walk I’m asking friends, family and supporters to consider helping a cause that's close to my heart. Its Batyr, a for-purpose, preventative mental health organisation, created and driven by young people, for young people. They operate in schools and universities throughout regional and urban NSW. What I did not know was that of every 30 students in Australia, seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support, leaving five suffering in silence. Sadly, most young people dealing with mental health issues do not reach out for help, largely due to stigma. If you are able to support, your donation will go a long way to help Batyr reach more young Australians through their engaging programs where at risk youth participate in workshops with relatable peers who have walked in their shoes and have the empathy to connect and the stories to provide hope for those who are vulnerable and at risk. A $100 donation will enable batyr to reach out to these at risk youth providing them with the knowledge and skills to take charge of their mental health. I like the idea of smashing the stigma surrounding mental ill-health to empower young people to reach out for support. Imagine if our diggers had this when they returned from the First war and tried to re-integrate into normal life? Fundraising www.cooeewalk.com.au. You will find Peter in and around Bathurst on Wednesday and then on the road to east over the following week.

Your Country Your Voice

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE

OVER $9 MILLION IN ROAD FUNDING FOR THE CENTRAL WEST The Central West will benefit from more than $9 million in Australian Government and NSW Government funding to improve local roads, making them smoother, safer and more reliable. We know that if you are a country resident, you are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a road accident than you are if you’re from the city. The cold hard truth is that the road toll is higher in the bush than metropolitan areas. The trauma from country road accidents is devastating not only for victims but also for police and emergency services personnel who have to attend the accidents. One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the turbo-charging of key investments in country roads. Not only will these projects help save lives, but they will give country communities a big economic shot in the arm by making possible roadworks that would have otherwise been sitting on council waiting lists.

• $468,502 will go towards the Old Western Road near Rydal for its reconstruction. The Old Western Road is the key road link for Rydal with the rest of our area, so it’s vital that we make these road safety investment. • Oberon’s Arkstone and Burraga Road will be restored with almost $4 million of Government funding. • In Bathurst, Piper Street will be resurfaced at a cost of $387,930 and Lambert Street will be reconstructed at a cost of $182,000 to ensure these vital transport and freight links are up to scratch. Round 2 of the Fixing Local Roads Program will fund more than 100 new road upgrades across NSW, creating more than 1000 jobs. All successful projects will be completed within two years to ensure local communities see the benefits as quickly as possible.

RUNS ON THE BOARD FOR LITHGOW √ $1.3 million for the Lithgow CBD revitalisation

√ $201,000 for Piper’s Flat Road and Range Road Intersection upgrades √ $6,000 for new equipment for Lithgow Men’s Shed √ $1.24 million for an expansion of Three Tree Lodge √ $10,000 for Portland’s Men’s Shed to restore Kremar Park Bath House √ $1.1 million for the upgrade of Glen Davis Road √ $64 million for the upgrade of the Forty Bends on Great Western Highway √ $55 million for the upgrade of the Great Western Highway through the Hartley Valley √ $1.06 million for the headspace outreach service √ $2.235 million for Lithgow’s Blast Furnace Park √ $60,000 for Marjorie Jackson Oval

PORTLAND MEMORIAL WALL It was an honour to represent the Australian Government at a deeply significant event at Portland last weekend. The Portland Tidy Towns Committee and the community unveiled a memorial wall which honours those who tragically lost their lives while working at Portland’s cement works. Portland’s cement works played a crucial role in building Sydney and NSW during the last century. Through this memorial, their names will now forever be remembered. A large number of visitors and community members attended what was a very moving unveiling ceremony. Thank you to the Portland Tidy Towns Committee, Councillor Maree Statham and all who contributed to the research, funding and building of this very fitting tribute.

√ $2 million for local projects under the Drought Communities Program √ $10,828 for Portland Golf Club (solar lighting, digital pass locks, door replacement) √ $1.36 million for roads upgrades including sealing Hartley Vale Road √ $480,000 for an upgrade of Wallerawang Community and Sports Club √ $796,800 for local road upgrades in Lithgow √ $704,000 for tree removal private property

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (DRP) and Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) has been extended to support those in Bathurst, Cabonne and Oberon local government areas.

The DRP is a one-off, non-means tested payment of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per child who have been adversely affected by the floods. The DRA is a short-term income support payment to assist people who can demonstrate their income has been affected as a direct result of a disaster. Across the flood-affected areas in NSW, more than $32 million paid to affected residents to date. Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education the Hon Andrew Gee MP said the extension of financial assistance would help those who had suffered due to the storms and floods. “The DRP is for people whose homes have been severely damaged or destroyed, it’s for those who have been seriously injured or who have lost a family member and it puts money straight in their pocket,” Mr Gee said. “In our area, the DRA will support employees, primary producers and sole traders affected by the floods to get back on their feet. It’s for people who can demonstrate that their income has been affected as a direct result of the flooding. “I’m very pleased to see that this support has been extended to our local government areas. It will be a financial boost as well as a morale boost to those in our communities who’ve been impacted by the heavy rain and flooding.” People eligible for DRA can access income assistance for up to 13 weeks, equivalent to the maximum rate of Jobseeker Payment or Youth Allowance. Equivalent financial assistance will also be available to eligible New Zealand citizens (‘non-protected’ Special Category Visa, subclass 444 holders) affected by the storms and floods. People in the Ballina, Bathurst, Bega Valley, Brewarrina, Byron, Cabonne, Cobar, Eurobodalla, Glen Innes Severn, Gunnedah, Gwydir, Inverell, Kyogle, Lismore, Liverpool Plains, Moree Plains, Narrabri, Oberon, Richmond Valley, Shoalhaven, Singleton, Tweed, Walcha, Walgett and Wingecarribee local government areas can now access the support package. These local government areas are in addition to the 34 local government areas that were previously activated. Services Australia Disaster Assistance phone lines are open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. For more information on support available, visit servicesaustralia.gov.au/disaster.

the first ever full music production to the rapidly growing list of successful events at The Foundations.

The powerhouse in the old cement works has see weddings, community events and markets in recent months, but this will be the first ever music production of this scale to be hosted by the venue. Presented by veteran festival producers Woodfordia Inc, the twenty-first edition of the much-loved not-forprofit music tour is taking on a packed tour schedule with the finest of home-grown talent visiting twenty community halls across New South Wales.

Bobby Alu

Amidst smooth harmonies, rhythms inspired by a strong family lineage of Polynesian performance, and unassuming grooves that work a gradual, smile-inducing high through even a casual listener, Bobby Alu tunes have a way of sneaking into the subconscious and taking up residence. Every now and then, one will pop up as a toe-tapping

Refusing to be thwarted by a rapidly changing and challenging events environment, Festival of Small Halls has continued to keep small towns clapping with extra effort and support provided to communities to keep these regional tours safely running as planned. “We were so inspired and impressed by the way community halls have been able to adopt these new conditions and not shy away from the extra hoops they have had to jump through to keep their communities safe, said Producer Eleanor Rigden. “Towards the end of 2020 when we got back on the road, hall committees and local groups really stepped up, realising it was more important than ever to support their communities to safely come together after a year of difficulty and isolation”, said Ms Rigden Tickets are available at https://festivalofsmallhalls.com

reminder to take it slow, enjoy the ride. It’s the curator of calm’s way – deliver island-time vibes with gentle optimism rather than forceful instruction, and encourage the type of reflection best achieved in a hammock. Though it’s not all palm trees and daydreams – there’s a robust energy in Alu’s mastery of traditional Samoan log drums, and a vitality to his songwriting that nods to world, roots and pop intelligence.

This Way North

Taking out Best Outer Suburban Act 2018 at The Age Music Victoria Awards, Australian act This Way North are on a steady incline. It’s easy to forget they are just a two-piece band. Drummer/vocalist Cat Leahy and guitarist/vocalist Leisha Jungalwalla create explosive energy and expansive sound, that translates effortlessly from the studio to the stage. This Way North bring more passion and energy than a 10-piece band, drumming up a contagious euphoria. The duo has brought their show to audiences from the Arctic in Canada, across Australia's sweeping central desert and down to the geysers of New Zealand. With the release their new seven-song EP Vol. 3 in February 2021, This Way North beckon us to shake off the year that was 2020 and welcome brighter days.

Ron van der Zwaag

There will also be a familiar face supporting the headline acts on the night, Bathurst local Ron van der Zwaag. Ron developed a connection with Portland from 2014 to 2018 when he taught music at the local school. His songs are a mix of folk/pop and country/pop tunes featuring lyrics that are often frivolous, but always grownup.

THE LUCKY COUNTRY DOESN’T FEEL LIKE THE “SAFE” COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY IN THE COUNTRY

More than a third of Australians (36%) feel unsafe during daylight hours, rising to 53% after dark with cybercrime top of the list of national safety concerns.

Story Submitted by Australian Security Industry Australia Ltd

That is the startling finding in the inaugural Australian Security Confidence Index (ASCI), study commissioned by the Australian Security Industry Association Ltd (ASIAL), to gauge how safe and secure Australians feel in various situations. The study was designed to take the pulse of the population regarding personal and workplace safety and security. NielsenIQ was asked to help identify key issues of importance to the Security Industry and to help shape policy conversations with government in the areas of regulation and law. NeilsenIQ Researchers were surprised that in almost every instance they investigated, the feelings of being unsafe are marginally greater in country areas than in cities. More than half of Australians feel unsafe in situations at night with women feeling more vulnerable and some ethnic groups, such as people of Indian or Chinese origin, also feeling more exposed. The activities Australians feel most unsafe doing during the day include using licensed taxis (15%), going to the cinema/theatre (15%) and using public transport (14%). All activity is perceived as much more dangerous at night, with public transport jumping to 33%, being at local parks/sportsgrounds rising to 31% and walking in local streets up to 26%. Surprisingly, many Australians feel unsafe online (41%), with fears of cybercrime, identity theft and other cyber attacks while using online banking, chatting on social media or online shopping. Social media feels unsafe to a significant 21% of people in NSW and the ACT, 12% of

Set in Kent, England, a reclusive writer, Alice Lamb, is reluctantly assigned to care for Frank, a young evacuee from London. Though the early relationship does not get off to a good start, she gradually begins to accept his presence. As they bond, Alice is reminded of her past affair with a fellow student, Vera, who ended the relationship as she was desperate to be a mother. Just before Frank’s birthday, Alice is informed of his father’s death but she finds it difficult to tell him. Events go from surprise to surprise and the story has a delightful though quite an emotional ending. Cast: Gemma Atherton (Alice), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Vera) and Tom Courtenay (headmaster)

2021 SIGNATURE BATHURST HERITAGE TRADES TRAIL RETURNS WITH A NEW VENUE

Over 200 years of history will come to life at the Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail on the weekend of 10th and 11th April 2021.

Cancelled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail has overcome adversity to return in a COVID-safe format with a new location and more heritage trades on display this year. Over 120 local and guest artisans will demonstrate rare trades that helped build the Bathurst region including blacksmithing, saddlery, dry stone walling, whip making, glass artistry, tapestry, embroidery, carpentry and joinery, violin making and more. Mayor of Bathurst, Councillor Bobby Bourke, said the Bathurst heritage Trades trail offers visitors and locals a unique cultural experience that gives insight into our rich past. ‘It’s important to preserve the trades and crafts that shaped the history and culture of Bathurst, Australia’s first inland European settlement. The Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail offers a fascinating chance to see, feel and experience how everyday items were made before the modern luxuries we are afforded today.’ This year will see part of the trail housed in a new location at the heritage Bathurst Showground pavilions,

along with its original location at the Bathurst Agricultural Research Station. Bathurst Showground is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register and is one of the original showgrounds in NSW, which has been used as a venue for community events since 1878. Some of the buildings include the Howard, Beau Brown and Trivett pavilions, each with unique heritage features. The Agricultural Research Station, formerly the ‘Bathurst Experiment Farm’ of the 1800s is a hidden gem that holds 11 National Trust listed buildings. The extra space at the Bathurst Showground this year will allow artisans and guests to be safely socially distanced to comply with the COVID-Safe plan for the event, including contact registration via the Service NSW app upon arrival for all patrons, and the supply of additional hygiene measures. Shuttle busses on the day will transport attendees between the two venues, making it easy to take in the wonders of all the heritage trades on display. Early bird tickets to the Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail are just $15 online at www.bathurstregion.com. au/bathurst-heritage-trades-trail. Tickets can also be purchased on the weekend of the event from Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, 1 Kendall Avenue, Bathurst, or at either venue for $20. Children under 16 are free. Like Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail on Facebook for regular updates about the event, and interesting historical content on the Bathurst Region.

LITHGOW GARDEN CLUB UPDATE

Another successful local ramble with 40 members and friends of the Lithgow Garden Club. Shirley Hodges and Maree Statham organised a visit to the Foundations at Portland and 2 local gardens.

Maree and her niece Kirilee planned the beautiful morning tea in Stuart 's nursery. Then onto Kim and Greg Parry's fascinating garden. It was then onto Maree's garden. What a picture. So much to see, Maree had been really busy in her garden. We had our BYO lunch under cover, then roamed the grounds. Afternoon tea was provided by Maree and Kirilee along with Greg Parry providing musical entertainment. Beautiful weather, beautiful gardens, with beautiful friends. The members collected donations for the Can Assist group of which Maree is President.

This incredibly inspiring woman will be running 350km (the equivalent of marathon every day for 8 days in a row) from her hometown of Parkes, through Lithgow (on Thurs 15th), all the way to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney and raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, Bandaged Bear, Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer and Can Assist. Rebecca has named her fundraiser The Ripple of Kindness Project and she is aiming to raise $100K to split between the charities. The idea for The Ripple of Kindness Project fundraiser came about when Rebecca’s close friend Jody lost her beautiful 8 year old daughter, Lilly, to leukaemia in November 2017 – a disease that Lilly had battled for most of her life. Lilly was heavily supported by the Leukaemia Foundation whilst she underwent treatment in Sydney for months on end. From this devastating loss, Rebecca started researching leukaemia and found that along with brain cancer, both are the most prevalent childhood cancers in Australia and impact hundreds of children each year. Rebecca’s aim through the run is to raise vital funds to not only assist with the research and treatment of childhood cancers such as leukaemia and brain cancer, but to also help the families going through the most difficult time of their lives where most are forced to leave their homes in regional and rural areas to receive lifesaving treatment in metropolitan hospitals such as the Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney. The four charities she’s chosen to support, all assist children and families going through cancer: Rebecca has shown a great deal of grit and persistence to get this fundraiser off the ground, experiencing a number of obstacles and setbacks along the way including a hip injury due to overtraining in 2019 which meant she had to rest for 6 months to heal. Then when she’d planned the run for September 2020, she had to push it back again due to Covid. And now, due to the latest flooding in areas on the way from Parkes to Sydney which has meant damage to the roads and bell

lines being shut down, she has had to pivot her plans from running on the open roads to instead running in parks and on ovals along the way to create the 350kms. Rebecca feels it’s going to be a big challenge emotionally, mentally and physically, but she is fortunate to have the amazing support of family and friends who will be beside her the whole way. She is also appealing to the local communities in the towns she will be running in and through to come along and cheer her on and donate to her fundraiser in the hope of significantly increasing the amount raised and to help her reach her target of $100K. Her local community has already got behind her and been fundraising through funfairs, pie drives, raffles and more. Rebecca will arrive in Lithgow on Thursday 15th April at the Tony Luchetti Sportsground in Lithgow. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for details. https://www.facebook.com/therippleofkindnessproject

Organisations with projects that empower women and promote their wellbeing can now apply for a share in the NSW Government’s Investing in Women funding program. I would encourage organisations across the region to put their hand up for funding, with applications open until Friday, 23 April. This is a great initiative with the potential to benefit the whole community. This grants program will enable projects that will encourage innovation and lead to increased productivity and prosperity for the region. We’re building a safer, stronger NSW and this program will mean that women in our area will have greater access to programs designed to improve their financial, physical and mental wellbeing. Initiatives funded under the program would support women in a range of objectives from employment and training to leadership development. From finding ways to improve women’s financial wellbeing and security to promoting health and mental fitness for all ages, we are looking for projects that can really make a difference to people’s lives. Past projects include a ‘cook and connect’ program for young and mature women who are experiencing homelessness, a project to help more women work in regional and communities and a coffee cart which provides valuable skills to Aboriginal women. These are just a few examples of projects which have helped change women’s lives and shape a better future. FLAME BURNS BRIGHT FOR CENTRAL WEST’S FEMALE BASKETBALLERS

THE BEARS READY FOR KICK OFF

A couple of weeks ago Lithgow Bears’ coach Johnny Farr claimed he had a team of hard workers and good team players – and no secret weapons. Story & Photos by John Fitzgerald

In a slam dunk for basketball in the Central West, female basketballers have trained with and learnt from Australia’s best at the Brydens Sydney Flames’ Her Flame Burns Bright basketball clinic at Bathurst today. Her Flame Burns Bright featured a junior clinic, coach’s clinic and leadership program presented by Australian Opal Lauren Nicholson. The aim of the program is to increase female participation and retention in regional NSW. The program, supported by the NSW Government, will be delivered in 10 locations over the next three years to more than 2,000 female basketballers and coaches. NSW Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the Her Flame Burns Bright program would play a vital role in nurturing and inspiring future athletes across the region. “The COVID-19 pandemic and other natural disasters have caused massive disruption in the region, and community sport was not immune,” Mr Farraway said. “It is great to see here today so many young people getting the opportunity to learn from Australian Opals and Sydney Flames players whilst also having fun and being active in a supportive environment. “You can’t be what you can’t see and this program will inspire our female players and invigorate women’s basketball throughout the Central West.” Karen Dalton General Manager of the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames said we are really excited to be launching the program in Bathurst and to have the opportunity of bringing our Opals and Flames role models to regional NSW. “We would like to thank the NSW government for their support in enabling us to reach and impact our young regional female basketballers.” Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the NSW Government was committed to supporting the drive for change in women’s sport through programs like Her Flame Burns Bright. “The NSW Government is breaking down barriers in women’s sport,” Mr Lee said. “We are proud to support innovative programs like Her Flame Burns Bright which are getting more women and girls involved in sport, both on and off the field.” Her Flame Burns Bright supports the NSW Government’s vision for the future of women’s sport. The Her Sport Her Way strategy aims to increase female participation, invest in female-friendly facilities, maximise investment and increase the number of women in leadership. But Tongan brothers-in-law Charles Haangana and John Aiaga, who fronted for last week’s knockout competition at Bathurst, may be the secret weapons Farr claimed didn’t exist. Originally from the Hawkesbury club, they individually produced solid games during their times on the field, but only occasionally were onfield together. They will add size and strength to the Bears’ forward pack for the upcoming season, and their teammates could do worse than trail behind them waiting for an offload. Hard workers and with powerful running styles, with these two extra players Farr could have the “secret weapon” to complement his already strong register of players. With the Wallerawang Landscaping Cup to begin in a couple of weeks, the Bears, with a few more training runs, will be all the better in 2021 with the presence of the “Tongan Twins”.

SHANE VAN GISBERGEN LEADS BMW TEAM TO HI-TEC OILS BATHURST 6 HOUR VICTORY Story Australian Racing Group (ARG). Photos by Warren Hawkless A crowd of over 15,000 attended the 2021 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour event, staged in perfect conditions throughout the Easter long weekend. Shane van Gisbergen has written himself into the record books, scoring victory with Shane Smollen and Rob Rubis in the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour at Mount Panorama today. The victory for van Gisbergen in the Prestige Connex BMW M4 makes him only the second driver in history to win the Bathurst’s three iconic endurance events – the Bathurst 1000, 12 Hour and now the 6 Hour production car race. Van Gisbergen joins Paul Morris as the only other driver to achieve the feat. It was an all BMW M4 podium, with Tim Leahey and Beric Lynton finishing second and Grant Sherrin and David Russell home third. For life-long friends Smollen and Rubis, claiming a Bathurst victory together was something of a dream. “It’s very surreal, that’s for sure,” Rubis, already a 6-hour class winner, said. Smollen, an experienced GT and Porsche racer, was full of praise for van Gisbergen’s significant contribution to the victory – beyond just his talent behind the wheel. In a race filled with 11 Safety Car periods, the race ebbed and flowed throughout as the leading contenders completed their allocations of compulsory pit stops across the day. The race was a tense strategic battle throughout with a clear order only really unfolding in the final 90 minutes following the final round of pit stops. After earlier dropping a lap due to an unscheduled stop, the Carr Motorsport BMW M4 found themselves leading after a daylong comeback drive by Brad Carr and Tim Slade. Cruelly, the car was forced to pit immediately thanks to a rightfront puncture, dropping them to the tail end of the lead lap and handing the lead to van Gisbergen, who along with Rubis and Smollen had ensured the #97 remained in the mix throughout the race. The next challenge for the ultimate winners came on account of an earlier 5 second penalty for a Safety Car restart infringement, ensuring van Gisbergen needed at least that margin to be assured of victory. After setting the race’s fastest lap on the 105th tour and withering pressure from defending winner Tim Leahey, the Kiwi ultimately pulled away to win by just under 10 seconds. David Russell pushed hard to catch Tim Leahey in the closing stages however had to settle for third, while a late charge from Tim Slade saw him fly from 12th to fourth in the closing stages, following the final Safety Car restart. A close battle throughout the day was won by the Garth Walden Racing Mercedes A45 AMG driven by Marty Sheargold, Brett Hobson and Oliver Shannon, the trio finishing 7th outright after a somewhat under-the-radar performance throughout the day. Second went to the Salmon, Shahin and Muston Mercedes while the Jimmy Vernon / Mark Griffith Mitsubishi completed the top three.

A2 was a battle of the Mustangs and was ultimately won by George Miedecke, Paul Morris and Brodie Kostecki, who also claimed fifth outright after a challenging day. The squad battled overheating issues and damage to the front splitter of the car, as well as fumes affecting both Miedecke and Kostecki late in the race. With Morris behind the wheel, the car came back from a long way down to claim their class victory by a little over three seconds. Second was the Colbey Cowham / Lindsay Kearns Mustang, which at times led the race outright, while third went the way of the Tony & Kyle Alford Mustang on it’s Bathurst debut. The remarkable Bathurst story of the Peter O’Donnell-owned BMW 335i turbo added another chapter as the Spinifex Recruiting team won class B1, O’Donnell, Peter Johnston and Garry Mennell finishing 26th outright. The iconic BMW clocked up 20,000km of Bathurst racing kilometres during the race. B2 went the way of the Race Academy International Commodore of Matt Forbes-Wilson, Ashley Seisun and Michael Ferns. After close fights early in the race, Class C ultimately went the way of the Osborne Motorsport Renault Megane of Josh Haynes and Kaide Lehmann by a full lap, with the Westwood / Gillis BMW M3 second in class. The battle in the Production Car category (Class D) was intense across the duration but ultimately fell the way of teenagers Lachlan Mineef and Tom Sargent, who finished an outstanding 15th outright in their Toyota 86GTS. They beat home the Ben & Jude Bargwanna Volkswagen Golf and the 11 Racing Toyota driven by Kiwi combo, Mitch Maddren, Matt Payne and Murray Dowsett – all three cars finishing on the same lap. Class E was won by the Road to Bathurst Mazda team entry driven by Wilson/Gilroy. The winners completed 120 laps of the 6.213km Mount Panorama circuit, for a total of 745km of racing.
