OAM RECOGNITION FOR PORTLAND’S JOHN KEARNS

Portland resident and long time community supporter and volunteer, John Kearns, was recognised for his commitment to the Portland community on Australia Day by being awarded an Order of Australia Medal.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wayne McAndrew, was on hand at Portland's very reduced awards ceremony at the town's rotunda, and he made a very heartfelt announcement for his friend and colleague. "I have known this man all of my life and to say the least he loves and breathes Portland, and he has been looking after the interests of Portland for decades," Said Clr McAndrew "I don't say lightly 'this great man', this great man has been an icon and treasure not just for Portland but for this community, for the work he has done over these decades. I can't think of anyone more worthy of this award than John Kearns," he said. The award is recognition of those decades of hard work that John admits is partly inspired by the work of his father in the town, and it is clear that the family tradition of putting the community first has continued. "I certainly accept the award with great honour and privilege, I don't take it lightly," said John "Look on it as partly for this community, without the community I wouldn't have been able to achieve or work in anything I have done," said John "I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that part of this wonderful award is the work and tolerance and heartaches she put up with, my dear wife Pat," John concluded.

ARE YOU A FOX OR A MEERKAT?

Better Business Column by Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“Approach each customer with the idea of helping him or her to solve a problem or achieve a goal, not of selling a product or service.” – Brian Tracy Sales is often seen as a dirty word but it shouldn't be. You may not like it but if you are in business, then you are in sales. Sales is a key success factor for any company and in particular when you are selling business to business. If you are good at selling then you can afford to make more mistakes in business than you can if you are not, as a great salesperson will always be able to generate revenue. More now than ever, learning selling skills is a major element in your business, not only surviving the pandemic, but thriving. Brian Tracey’s quote is very relevant to the sales approach you may decide to take. How can you help your customer? How can you ease any of their pain points? How can you resolve any of their pressing issues? Are you listening to what the client really needs? Does your products or services only mask the symptoms or can you find the root problem and solve it? Are you a quick fix that disappears into the night, or are you building a strong client relationship for life? There are two types of salespeople, 'The Fox', (Transactional Salesperson), and "The Meerkat', (The Relationship Salesperson). The Fox seeks the fast sell and enjoys going in for the kill. Once the sale is done they then move on for their next ‘victim’ with little thought as to how satisfied the customer might be with their purchase. The Fox is seen as slick, arrogant at times, and untrustworthy. They rarely network and when they do it is obvious they only care about one thing, getting a sale. The Meerkat, on the other hand, develops relationships with prospective clients overtime, well before the sales process takes place, building strong TRUST between themselves and the client. The Meerkat, follows up after each purchase for feedback and proactively researches other ways to assist the client and refers other reliable suppliers to the client when required with the view of ensuring the client is successful. The Meerkat is seen as authentic, caring, and most importantly trustworthy. Both types appear to exhibit their expertise and competency to get the job done. The Foxes sees themselves as professional salespeople and the Meerkats see themselves as networkers and relationship builders. As a Meerkat, my sales process is to network, build rapport, develop the relationship, create credibility and trust, and finally, I create the opportunity for the

client to invite me to sell. Yes, it does take more time but the process creates long term ideal clients.

Are you a Fox or a Meerkat? “Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers, and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individuals core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effective and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision.”

Issue 344 - 29th January 2021

A RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL BOATS Most economists believe that 2021 will be a good year for Australian shares.

We have snapped back from the COVID recession, with economic growth of 3.3 per cent in the September quarter. There are several vaccines being rolled out globally in what is the biggest vaccination campaign in history. Across 51 countries, 2.44 million doses a day are currently being administered. Here in Australia, we are looking to start our domestic program next month.

A good year ahead

This positive news is improving business and consumer confidence. According to CoreData’s High Net Worth Investor Sentiment Index©, the rich are feeling more confident right now than they have at any other time in the past seven years. This positive sentiment will increase demand and should push share prices up as investors return to investing in the share market. But that’s just the start. There will also be more demand for shares from retirees as they search for investment income. Many unadvised retirees see no alternative but to increase their risks and invest more in shares for the dividend income. Record low interest rates mean that the potential dividend yield from shares is way more attractive than what term deposits are currently paying out.

Cyclical shares should perform well

All this means that the share market is likely to rise, particularly cyclical shares. Cyclical shares move up and down with the systemic changes in the economy. Most cyclical shares involve companies that sell discretionary items that people buy more of during good times but spend less on during tough times. In Australia these include financial services and insurance companies as well as basic materials stocks. Other sectors should perform well too. Shares in online delivery platform companies and internet publishing and broadcasting companies should perform well because of changing consumer habits that are likely to outlast COVID. The Government stimulus package provides favourable conditions that make infrastructure and largescale construction companies attractive as well.

What this means for retiree investors

Rising share markets are welcome news for retirees, especially when interest rates are so low. It means that we can rebalance our investments, replenish our shortterm cash reserves and de-risk our financial plans with confidence. If you’d like to learn more about how to make sense of the complexity when it comes to your retirement, give us a call. We’d love to help. COME ALONG TO THE GREAT WESTERN BATTERY COMMUNITY DROP-IN SESSION Come along to the Great Western Battery Community Drop-In Session • •

Neoen is hosting an informal drop-in session for community members to learn more about the proposed Great Western Battery The event is on Wed 3rd February 2-7pm at the Bistro Room of the Commercial Hotel in Wallerawang

Great Western Battery is a 500 MW stand-alone battery storage project which would be located north of Wallerawang and linked to Transgrid’s transmission network via a substation. As a grid-scale battery it could provide a range of services including frequency control and load shifting both of which help to support the addition of more renewable energy into the electricity network. Neoen has a strong track-record of battery storage projects in Australia as the proud owner of the world’s first big battery, the 150MW Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia and a 300MW Victorian Big Battery near Geelong which is under construction. Neoen also owns and operates 4 solar farms in NSW and is currently developing Eglinton Solar Farm near Bathurst. The Great Western Battery is expected to create over 200 jobs during the construction period, which will last approximately 12-16 months, providing lots of opportunities for local employment, suppliers, accommodation, hospitality and service providers. There will be a small, permanent team of around 6 staff once the facility starts operating. While the project is still in the very early stages of development, project manager Sebastien Roebben said Neoen was eager to introduce the community to this exciting clean energy project. “Community drop-in sessions are a great way to learn more about this new technology and the role it can play, and what a project of this scale could mean for the town and the region. We invite you to come along to meet members of the project team, ask lots of questions and take an information booklet home for friends and family. For those that can’t make it along on the day we encourage them to look at the project website greatwesternbattery.com.au ” Neoen has a ‘no surprises’ approach to its projects and

will provide regular opportunities for input and updates as the project progresses. We welcome people’s feedback through our online survey: https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/greatwesternbattery. At the drop-in session community members will be able to look over the proposed project plans, maps and materials and ask questions so that individuals and businesses can prepare to capitalise on the many opportunities this project could offer. Neoen will establish a Community Benefit -Sharing Scheme which would deliver benefits for the lifetime of the project and is seeking people’s initial ideas and input for the scheme. Drinks and refreshments will be provided and a Covidsafe plan for the event online at greatwesternbattery.com. au

SUPPORT CONTINUES FOR YOUNG KEELY The Portland Community has continued to support young local resident Keely with The Corner Takeaway raising funds through their shop over the last 2 months and throwing in a special surprise for young Keely also.

Nigel & Karen Truslove have run a number of fundraisers throughout the year, donating part of their taking to local charitable causes. This month they have donated $1300 to the ongoing medical expenses that Keely and her family are facing, raised from donations through the shop as well

as some donations from their extended network of people that heard of Keely’s plight and wanted to help. One of this donations was not in the form of money, but rather a much needed electrical hospital style bed that Keely needs to help with her ability to sleep comfortably. “The bed was donate by the Hamilin daily fro mParkes, they heard what we resining money for and were able to supply the bed,” said Nigel. Other donations were received from Lithgow Worries Womens Bowling Club, Portland SES and Jims cleaning in Yeppoon Queensland. dded to the shop donations, the Toal came in at $1300.

A BIG SPLASH AT PORTLAND POOL FOR AUSTRALIA DAY

It was a huge day at Portland Olympic pool on Australia Day with over 400 visitors though the gates.

The pool offered free entry on the day thanks to donations from the Foundations and The Village Voice, giving locals and visitors a chance to enjoy the blistering heat in the most Australian way possible, at the local pool listening to great music and calling off in the water. There were many visitors from outside the town that were visiting the pool for the first time, many committing to come back now they had experienced first hand just how good the community owned facility is. With one of the few remaining diving boards at a public pool, Portland has become a hit with visitors over the past few years, and the more people that come, the more certain the community owned pool is of it’s future. One of the highlights on the day was the impromptu ‘bomb’ competition which saw a succession of people give it their best of the diving board. Portland Pool is open daily (depending on the weather) and is a great day out for the whole family. Find details on their Facebook page for opening times and entry costs.

School’s Back!

AUSTRALIA DAY IN LITHGOW! Australia Day 2021 was a great occasion for Australians to come together and celebrate our wonderful country and how lucky we are to live in it. 2020 was a devastating year, with drought, bushfires, floods and COVID-19. What got us through all of those trials and ordeals was our local communities and the Australians who in all sorts of ways put the care and safety of others above themselves. It’s that spirit of service above self that has always sustained our nation and goes to the very heart of what it is to be an Australian. I’d therefore like to thank and congratulate everyone in our community who was nominated for, or received, an Australia Day award. We thank you all for your contribution to making our region and our country the best place in the world to call home. Congratulations also to John Kearns OAM for his well-deserved Order of Australia Award. John has been a tireless community servant for almost 50 years. It was also terrific to see Lithgow City Council’s Lew Bezzina PSM recognised with a public service medal for outstanding public service to the Lithgow City Council particularly during the 2019-2020 bushfires. Well done Lew and John!

There are probably quite a few parents happy to see school going back after the summer break! I’d like to wish all of our students the best for the year ahead. I’d also like to acknowledge the vitally important work of our teachers. Nurturing the promise of Australia’s future is a big responsibility and teaching is a very high calling. My best wishes and thanks to all of our teachers! We appreciate you!

DARK CORNER ROAD UPGRADE COMPLETE! Residents of Dark Corner can now enjoy a smoother, safer drive to town following the completion of a major upgrade of Dark Corner Road. Several kilometres of new road surface have been installed and there has also been a significant amount of patching of other sections. Some of the work within the project scope includes roadside vegetation control; reconstruction of the road subbase, grading; compaction rolling; and adding moisture to achieve the necessary compaction. Andrew recently inspected the newly sealed stretch of Dark Corner Road

This is a joint Australian - New South Wales Government project and it has been a great partnership between all levels of government, including the Council. The funding injection of $1,363,500 from the Federal and NSW Government was made under the Fixing Local Roads Program, which was accelerated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to keep people in jobs and local businesses supported. Spending money on local infrastructure like roads and bridges is a great way to stimulate the economy in a way that delivers lasting benefits. news THE NATIONALS STRATEGIC PLAN TO DOUBLE AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING EMPLOYMENT

Issue 344 - 29th January 2021

Regional Australia will lead the country’s post-COVID economic recovery under The Nationals’ ambitious plan to modernise and rejuvenate Australian manufacturing.

The Nationals have a strong track record of backing wealth creation, jobs and sustainable industries and manufacturing is key to continuing to do this. The Nationals believe there is an abundance of resources and opportunities for regional communities to be the value-add pacesetters by focusing on the entire supply chain and not just the original raw product. “We need to have strategic capability in our own country and regional Australia has a significant role in doing that,” Nationals Senate Leader McKenzie said. “The Nationals manufacturing vision – Manufacturing 2035 - will deliver jobs, it will get production lines humming and restore our sovereign manufacturing capability.

“Jobs equals economic security. We need to make Australia make again. We need Aussies to be able buy Australian Made. “Implementing The Nationals policies will deliver 800,000 new manufacturing jobs by 2035. This is proudly ambitious and is achievable.” Senator McKenzie said the global COVID-19 pandemic had highlighted the need to protect supply chains in essential products, such as medical supplies and food and beverages. Manufacturing 2035 is the culmination of extensive roundtable and video teleconferences with manufacturers from across regional Australia. “It was a delight to meet and hear from so many regional manufactures and be able to incorporate their vision into what will be Australia’s most ambitious manufacturing program since World War 2,” Senator McKenzie said. “Many countries have government-backed lending facilities to support investments in manufacturing, we should establish a $5 billion manufacturing concessional loan program to support investments in our manufacturing sector. “A renewed focus on the revival of Australian manufacturing, along with the designation of a number of strategic areas and the allocation of dedicated funding, warrants regionally based Offices of Regional Manufacturing to support the regions in achieving this ambitious goal.” “Manufacturing has played a crucial role in the development of many regional towns, including and a renewed focus on manufacturing will help deliver stronger economic growth in regional Australia,” Senator McKenzie aid. “Private investment also has a key role to play and one way to encourage the private sector is for the Australian Government to provide tax incentives for manufacturingbased investment.”

Paul Toole MP

The Nationals 9-point plan to double employment in Australian manufacturing: 1.

Take countervailing action to protect strategic industries where subsidies in other countries have an adverse impact on Australia’s ability to develop strategic industries.

2.

Increase trade promotion efforts and grow exports for our manufacturing industries.

3.

Expand the remit of the Regional Investment Corporation to include new low-cost, longterm finance for strategic manufacturing industries.

4.

Create a decentralised Office of Regional Manufacturing with offices in Gladstone and Newcastle with a mandate to achieve specific growth targets in Australian manufacturing’s priority areas.

5.

Provide tax incentives including accelerated depreciation to encourage investment in manufacturing capital, and in research and development.

6. Strengthen Australian Government procurement policies to back Australian manufacturing first. 7.

Facilitate early exposure to trade qualifications and harmonise our qualifications and employment conditions.

8. Invest in reliable and affordable energy and in strategic infrastructure that can support manufacturing, including in coal and gas fired power. 9. Fund exploration to find a new oil province in Australia to replace the Bass Strait.

FUNDING BOOST FOR JACK AND JILL PRESCHOOL  Preschool and day care centres across the state will be able to improve their services, with more than $11 million in funding announced.Â

The NSW Government’s Quality Learning Environments (QLE) grants provide not-for-profit community and mobile preschools and not-for-profit long day care services across the State with funding of up to $15,000 to purchase resources and activities which improve physical or educational learning environments. Bathurst MP Paul Toole said the Jack and Jill Preschool at Lithgow were excited to receive $15,000, which has allowed the centre to be decked out with brand new floorboards. “The preschool previously had carpet throughout the building and it was hard to keep clean and was looking a bit tired and worn,â€? he said. “It’s great that this funding has allowed new floorboards to be laid throughout and they look fantastic. All the rooms look light and airy and best of all when there’s spills, they are easily cleaned up.â€? Mr Toole said the QLE grants are greatly welcomed in the community, especially after a tough year with drought, fire and COVID-19 for early childhood services. The grants will fund improvements to physical spaces by enhancing the quality of the grounds and buildings of services. They can also be used to provide specialised educational programs for children to address identified educational needs. "Early childhood education is incredibly important and these grants will help educators provide high quality learning environments for our children," Mr Toole said.

Issue 344 - 29th January 2021 BUSINESS REGISTRATIONS OPEN FOR DINE & DISCOVER We want people to get out there, support their local businesses and get spending. The Dine and Discover program will be rolled out in a few steps to ensure a seamless customer experience. Every NSW resident aged 18 and over will be eligible for four $25 vouchers worth $100 in total, to spend in participating businesses. The vouchers will be divided into two categories: -Two $25 vouchers to be used for eating in at restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and clubs from Monday to Thursday, excluding public holidays. -Two $25 vouchers to be used for entertainment and recreation, including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues, available 7 days a week, excluding public holidays. The vouchers can only be used within businesses that have implemented a COVID Safety Plan and are registered as COVID Safe. Eligible businesses across the state can now register to take part in Dine & Discover NSW.

REGIONAL WOMEN’S SPORT A WINNER WITH $50 MILLION FUNDING BOOST Sports facilities across regional NSW will benefit from new and improved women’s change rooms and amenities thanks to $50 million in funding from the NSW Government’s $2 billion Regional Growth Fund.

AFL, rugby or cricket matches in rural and regional locations don’t have access to suitable changing facilities so the NSW Government has committed this funding to level the playing field. Some of Australia’s best sporting talents are women from regional NSW, and we want to see more females showcasing their talent at a grassroots level.

Business owners will then receive a step-by-step process on how to get ready. With a high uptake of the vouchers expected across the state, the Business Profile provides one, easy to use location for businesses to stay on top of voucher transactions.

Round Four of the $100 million Stronger Country Communities Fund will have a regional sports focus, with up to $50 million to be made available for the delivery and enhancement of women’s sporting facilities, including change rooms.

In many areas of regional NSW there is a shortage of female dedicated change facilities and amenities which can be off-putting, so this funding will be a huge win for women and girls who would have otherwise been deterred from playing sport.

The NSW Government is building a safer and stronger regional NSW and these new facilities will increase participation and allow women and girls to receive the social and health benefits associated with sport.

I know this funding will be warmly welcomed by female athletes in regional communities who will now face one less barrier to taking up a sport.

All eligible businesses will receive an email from Service NSW with details on how to register. I also urge residents to do yourself a favour and download the Service NSW app now in anticipation of the rollout.

Clubs and community sport provide friendship, fitness and a lot of fun and I’m delighted that this funding has been made available as a means of boosting participation in women’s sport.

The program will create an economic boost for dining, arts and tourism businesses, which have been impacted by COVID-19, and encourage customers to get out and about safely.

Rounds 4 funding opens in May: https://www.nsw.gov.au/ regional-growth-fund/stronger-country-communities-fund

For more information on Dine & Discover NSW business registration and eligibility, visit www.nsw.gov.au

Women have been flying the flag for Australian sport with our international teams achieving incredible status on the world platform, and many of these athletes come from regional communities. Too many women participating in local soccer,

DON'T FORGET THE WINGS! Smoked Chicken Wings

Chicken wings are a party favourite anywhere. A big batch of wings goes a long way at any family BBQ occasion. A cost effective cut, it’s a great way to provide a tasty entree to your guests while the main meal is cooking, you can also do them in advance.

Ingredients

• Chicken wings, you get about 9 per kilo, and I would allow 3-4 per adult • Smoked garlic salt (see recipe on right) • Olive oil

Method 1. Heat up your charcoal BBQ to a nice high heat, to get the crispiest skin you want to start the cooking at a very high temperature. 2. Coat the chicken wings in olive oil and the smoked garlic salt 3. You want to cook with indirect heat, and have a foil tray setup to catch the cooking juices. 4. Place the chicken wings down on the grill, they work best if you start wit the wings tips pointing up 5. Add your smoking chips to the heat and then put the lid back on your BBQ to get a good smoke going. 6. Give the wings about 15 minutes before turning them, and sprinkle with a bit more of the smoked garlic salt. 7. Replace the lid and cook for a further 15 minutes. 8. Remove the wings from the grill and get straight into them while they are super crispy and hot.

Smoked Garlic Salt This rub does take quite a bit more effort than the other, because smoked garlic is not something you can easily get your hands on. Take a whole garlic and place it in your BBQ with smoking chips and a low heat (70 degrees) for around 6 hours. This will dry the garlic out and allow you to easily crush it up. The best way to do it is to do it at the same time as smoking something else low and slow. Once they are smoked, peel the cloves and crush them in a mortar and pestle.

Ingredients • • • •

whole garlic bulb crushed 1 tablespoon dried rosemary 2 tablespoons pink salt 2 tablespoons black pepper corns

• 1 tablespoon red pepper corns 1. Combine all ingredients in a mortar and pestle and grind to a coarse salt. Store in an air tight container.

LITHGOW LOCAL PROGRAMS TO RESUME AT THE LIBRARIES Lithgow Library Learning Centre is RETIRES FROM happy to announce the resumption COMMUNITY HOUSING of regular programming activities the libraries commencing from FOLLOWING 25 YEARS at Monday 15 February 2021. OF SERVICE Lithgow local Beverly Wiggins is retiring from Wentworth Community Housing on 29 January 2021. Her departure follows 25 years of dedicated work helping social housing tenants in the community.

Regular library programming was suspended due to COVID restrictions during 2020, but as restrictions ease programming is being reinstated. This commenced with children’s activities during January and will further continue with the reintroduction of small group activities

such as knitting and craft groups. Other activities will resume as COVID restrictions allow. The Lithgow Library meeting room will also be available for small group hire. Groups hiring the meeting room will need to provide their own COVID Safe plan as well as following the library’s COVID Safe plan. Adult participants in all groups and meetings are asked to bring and wear a mask, follow the library’s COVID Safe plan and not attend the library if feeling unwell. For more information contact the library on 6352 9100.

Beverly’s long and storied career in community housing began in 1985 at what was then known as the Lithgow Community Tenancy Scheme. “I was a tenant then but my passion for the sector saw me wear many hats over the years,” Beverly says. Under the banner of what became Lithgow Community Housing, Beverly’s role moved from volunteer to Treasurer to Chief Executive Officer. “I’ve always believed in putting tenant and client wellbeing at the forefront of my work,” she says. Former Chair of Lithgow Community Housing, Brian Kinney, confirms Beverly’s client-centred approach and congratulates her many years of service. “Speaking with colleagues and tenants alike, it’s clear how beloved Bev is within the Lithgow community. Her hard work and passion has made such a difference to so many people over the years.” In 2020, Beverly played a pivotal role in the merger with Wentworth, creating an opportunity to expand Lithgow’s offering of affordable housing for those on low to moderate incomes. Her current role is Client and Community Partnerships Manager (Lithgow) at Wentworth Community Housing. “Bev and I started talking about a merger several years ago. She realised it was necessary to bring new resources and expertise to support the local community,” says Wentworth CEO Stephen McIntyre. “We’re sad to see her go and would like to wish her good health and every success in the future.” Wentworth’s services in Lithgow will continue, with the office on Main Street open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

WRAS CELEBRATES 30TH YEARS In 2021 the Western Region Academy of Sport will be celebrating a significant achievement, its 30th anniversary. To celebrate this terrific milestone, the ‘We Are WRAS’ campaign will recognise 30 important contributions to our history.

Commencing in 1991 the academy was established to assist and offer support to regional athletes to help them reach their sporting ambitions. Through its journey, WRAS has been privileged to assist over 4000 athletes since its inception and run hundreds of pathway programs

across 29 different sports (including the 11 current sports programs). Providing a stepping stone for local, national or even international success the continued achievements of WRAS would not be possible without the contribution of individuals and organisations that create these opportunities. Candice Boggs, Executive Officer of WRAS says this year’s ‘We Are WRAS’ celebration will be a chance to shine the light on some amazing stories of past and present WRAS members, stakeholders and supporters. “Our history has been filled with talented athletes, coaches, volunteers and organisations that have committed to helping the academy grow. So, throughout the year, although we will not be able to mention everyone, we will be recognising 30 wonderful contributions and success stories,”

“We’ve proudly seen our graduate athletes achieve success at the highest level, including the likes of former World Champion and Olympic Games cyclist Mark Renshaw, three time Paralympic gold medallist Kurt Fearnley and more recently Australian rugby sevens representative Jakiya Whitfield. The assistance we offer the athletes all comes down to the passionate coaches, supporters and our stakeholders,” “The academy is forever continuing its mission to enhance and provide opportunities for aspiring regional athletes, coaches and officials on the pathway to sporting success. We’re looking forward to sharing these amazing stories with our community and celebrating those that have played a significant role in the success of WRAS.” The ‘We Are WRAS campaign will kick off in February featuring highlight posts across the social media channels, with full interviews to be posted on the WRAS website.

BATHURST TURNS GREEN FOR TARMAC WILDFIRES CRICKET The Western Wildfires Veterans RACERS MANY HANDS MOTORSPORT cricket team started the new year A recent change to Victoria’s COVID status of regional NSW means Bathurst’s race-starved tarmac rally team, Many Hands Motorsport are set to head to the ski resort of Mt Buller to contest Targa Australia’s Targa High Country.

Tarmac Rally is a unique form of motorsport where Tarmac Rally Cars compete on public roads closed for competition. The father-daughter team of Steve and Heather Brumby compete in the TSD category of the Targa Australia Championship which consist of three events; Targa High Country, Targa Great Barrier Reef, which is based out of Cairns in Queensland and the iconic Targa Tasmania, which sees the teams compete over a massive six days across the island state. “We’re looking to improve our championship standing this year” said team driver Steve Brumby after the team placed third in the 2019 Championship. “2020 was a wash-out for all of us due to COVID but we’ve missed the

first event in this year’s championship due to the border restrictions so we’ll need to get straight back into it down in Victoria”. The first round, Targa Great Barrier Reef was run in September 2020 but the team was prevented from participating by Queensland border restrictions. “We are focussed in doing well in Victoria and then following up in Tasmania in April”. “I’m just excited to be getting back into our race car” said 17-year-old team navigator Heather Brumby. “It’s seems like a lifetime ago that we were last in the car and racing. The events have a real family feel to them and it’ll be nice to see all our rally friends after such a long break. I’ve now got all my fingers and toes crossed that the Victorian border can stay open!” Targa High Country, which is based at the Mt Buller ski resort, runs on the roads around the Mansfield and Lake Eildon areas of Central Victoria and includes several hot blooded 18 km long runs up the breathtaking Mt Buller access road. with two very narrow losses. They travelled to the Hunter area playing their first game followed the day by a game in the Gosford area.

The first match was played against the Hunter Taverners at Awaba. Batting first, the Wildfires made 8/156 with Al Northey making 29, David Hicks (with a welcome return to form) being 24 not out and Neville Castle being retired for 21. In reply, Hunter reached 160 with only 2 overs to go and being 7 out with most bowlers doing well. Mick Byrne took 2/22 with Dave Hicks 1/8 and Barry Fitzgerald 1/16. The second game was even closer against Central Coast at Umina. On a poorly prepared pitch, the Wildfires were bowled out for just 74. Kim Taylor easily top scored with 29 and only Steve Walsh and Neville Castle the only other batsmen to make double figures. Central Coast looked like winning easily when they were none for 30 after 5 overs. However, then everything changed and they lost 9/43 to be 9/73 still needing 2 to win. Central Coast managed those runs, just, to claim their victory. There were some good bowling figures, with Nev Castle taking 5/9, Al Northey 2/14 (off 7 over) and Alan Bullock making his first appearance for the Wildfires, after playing for Portland more than25 years ago, taking 1/0 off 2 overs. The Wildfires next game is against Southern Highlands in Lithgow on Feb. 7th followed by return matches against the Hunter and Central Coast both in Lithgow which the Wildfires will look forward to with renewed enthusiasm.

LITHGOW WORKIES BOWLING CLUB - MAJOR PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

Results so far of games played has seen Joe Eather & Tom Staines combine well to defeat the strong pairing of Gwyn Walding & Col Phelan 19 – 14

Another game worthy of match of the day status saw Stephen Lesslie & Ray Warren lead comfortably against Brian Judge & Trevor Schram at the 16th end by 20 shots to 9. Then Judge and Schram struck a purple patch and scored 11 shots to nil on the last 5 ends to have the match all tied up 20 – 20 at the conclusion of the 21st end. However on the deciding extra end, Lesslie & Warren were not to be denied and scored one shot to win the entertaining game 21 – 20. Other results saw Dennis Hull & Geoff Tonge win a close tussle over Col Aylward & Max Tattersall 20 – 19. Dave Bunting & Don Milligan Def. Dave Butler & Richard Long 24 – 20 Wayne Clarke & Ken Sutherland Def. Col McDonnell & Ben Woolard 19 – 15. With quarter final matches coming up, we should see some good games between evenly matched pairs.
