BYE BYE 2020… BRING ON 2021! It is finally starting to feel a lot like Christmas. There are decorations in the streets, the big Christmas Tree is up in Cook Street Plaza, and this year there is also one out at Portland in Mick Moore Park. by Rich Evans

Some of the usual Christmas events have not gone ahead, but I am sure that everyone is with me in embracing the Christmas spirit for one main reason this year… it means 2020 is nearly over! With all the rain predicted over the next week, it is a very different environment to last year, and thankfully so. 2020 has been a challenging year for many in the region, as the uncertainty of COVID came straight after the devastation of the bushfires, however once again, Lithgow has proven it’s resilience and continued to be an amazing community to be a part of. It’s not over yet as far as COVID goes, but if we were to do an accounting of the pros and cons of 2020, we would certainly start to see some significant numbers stack up in the pro column. For instance, local tourism is booming, and the number of day trippers and holiday

makers that visit the region now is growing constantly. This trend will not change anytime soon, and local tourism operators could certainly use the boost to their businesses. There is support from State and Federal government for recovery efforts like never before and there is the potential that support will increase in the new year as projects and proposals come in for how we can reshape the region into the future. Like any point in history, we will look back on 2020 in some years time and realise that it made us stronger and we may even see it as a blessing. One of the great stoic principles I try to uphold is Amor Fati - to love your fate. This is not always easy, but it is certainly what helped me to get through this year, realising that what was happening was neither good nor bad, it just was, and I had to respond to it no matter what. As we roll into this final production of the Village Voice for the year, I would like to thank everyone who assists us in this publication each week, our contributors, advertisers, our team in the office and especially our readers. It has been a pleasure to continue bringing you the good news of the region this year, without a single pause in the most trying of times, and I look forward to being of service to our community again next year. This Rock Art restoration was chosen,” said Mick Hanly, Energy Australia’s Community Relations Lead. “Some of our staff and I attended the working group. What a fantastic initiative by Mingaan. To preserve and protect a significant sacred Wiradjuri site that’s seen its challenges. Largely by the recent fires and ongoing graffiti,” continued Mr Hanly. The works being done out at the rock art site is hugely rewarding for those attending. Jammed packed with cultural awareness, local history and hands on restoration of the rock art, it gave volunteers a deeper understanding of the sacred site.

TIME FOR A SHORT BREAK…

The time is upon us when Village Voice will take a break for a couple of weeks so we can rest our weary bones and prepare for whatever it is that 2021 will throw at us. This is our last paper for 2020 and we will return on January 8 2021 on newsstands. It has certainly been an interesting year, and one I am sure we will look back on as a pivotal one for our whole business. We have got some great things very well planned for 2021 as 2020 was not the time to launch new initiatives, we chose to just buckle down and get the job done. We appreciate all the support our readers

and advertisers have shown us throughout 2020, we have increased our publication distribution numbers this year which is extraordinary given the ‘big end of town’ publishers are saying that print is declining. The Staff at Village Voice wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happier New Year!

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT ALONG FARMERS CREEK – OAKEY PARK / ZIG ZAG OVAL Council is currently undertaking extensive vegetation control along Farmers Creek in the area of Oakey Park. Council has identified issues with the Golden Robinia trees which are non-native, environmental weeds. Many are in poor condition, rotted inside and are at risk of cracking and falling. In addition to this, Golden Robinia trees are very prone to suckering once their roots are damaged. As Golden Robinia trees can sprout suckers from their roots at a considerable distance from the parent plant, they may cause problems in adjacent properties. Some residents have expressed concern about these works. This is understandable as the trees are mature and provide shade. Moving forward, Council intends to replant shade trees and revegetate the banks of the creek with native vegetation. Given Council’s responsibility in the management of Farmers Creek, it is necessary to undertake this work. However, the work has been paused for the moment to inform the community about the necessity for the works.

FURTHER EXTENSION OF FARMERS CREEK SHARED PATHWAY UNDERWAY

Works to extend the Farmers Creek shared pedestrian/cycle pathway from Tank Street to Burton Street Lithgow are underway with two new bridges to be installed before Christmas.

This stage of works that commenced recently and will extend into 2021, involves construction of a shared standard pathway starting near the corner of Tank and Macaulay Streets and extending along the Farmers Creek bank to Inch Street via Guy and Burton Streets. As part of this stage of works, two bridges are being installed before Christmas over State Mine Creek and Farmers Creek. When this stage of works is completed, the shared pathway, with some on-road sections, will extend from

the Geordie Street crossing to Saywell Street Park. This initiative is part of a long term plan by Council to rejuvenate the Farmers Creek corridor, enhance public appreciation and use of the creek corridor and to promote community wellbeing and engagement. As part of the current works, a single Poplar tree on Guy Street, near the Macauley Street intersection is to be soon removed to make way for the shared pathway due to the narrow strip of land between the tree and the creek bank. Following completion of the pathways and bridges, weed management and other environmental works will take place including planting new trees in some sections to beautify the creek and to encourage community use. More works will commence in 2021 to extend the shared pathway further and to enhance connections between Farmers Creek and places of community interest including sporting fields, Eskbank House, Blast Furnace and Lake Pillans.

From our family to yours, we hope that you have a safe and festive holiday season.

The Australian Government’s Community Heritage Grants program provides grants of up to $15,000 to community groups to help preserve and manage locally held but nationally significant cultural heritage collections. Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee MP announced the Museum will receive $7,106 to purchase storage equipment designed to protect and preserve historical documents, which include employee records, designs of machinery and building blueprints. “Lithgow has over one hundred years’ experience in small arms manufacturing, making it one of the oldest firearms manufacturing towns in Australia,” Mr Gee said. “The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is part of the fabric of the community and preserving its history for future generations is vitally important. “The Museums hardworking volunteers have been doing an incredible job cleaning, cataloguing and digitising these documents and records. I am thrilled the Australian Government can assist with this extensive and extremely important project.” The Museum has accumulated an estimated 200,000 records and documents from a range of sources since it began 24 years ago, notably the Australian Government and the owner of the Small Arms Factory, Thales. Some documents date back to 1908, the year land was purchased to begin construction of the Factory. It opened in June 1912 with 190 employees. “This Museum is the only place in the world where these archives exist, so it’s our responsibility to not only preserve and protect these historical records, but to make

STRATEGIC PLANNING, LET’S DO IT!

Better Business Column By Steve Semmens | The Persuader

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” - Alan Lakein As another calendar year is almost at an end, it is time to think about working on a new strategic plan, or reviewing your current one. 90% of businesses fail to plan and then wonder why they have not achieved the results they believed they should have achieved. Many businesses created a business plan when they first started up but usually stuck it in a file never to be looked at again. It is a shame, as I have reviewed many great business plans and if the Business Owner had stuck to their original plan they and their organisations would have been much better off. There is several definitions of strategic planning, but Peter Drucker, a Management Guru, describes it the most accurately, “Strategic planning is the continuous process of making present entrepreneurial (risk-taking) decisions systematically and with the greatest knowledge of their futurity; organising systematically the efforts needed to carry out these decisions; and measuring the results of these decisions against the expectations through organised systematic feedback.” Strategic planning gives your vision, mission, and values life and should be threaded throughout the organisation and all of its activities. It emphasises how you give value to your stakeholders. It gives a clear direction of where your organisation is headed and guides employees to know what to do and when to do it. A strategic plan is not to be shoved in a drawer or hidden away. Creating a five year plan is common, but it is important to remember it is a living document, and should be regularly reviewed and changed when necessary. As part of the process, you can undertake a SWOT analysis researching your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. I would suggest management complete one and staff complete another. It is amazing the difference in perspectives of the two groups and it will provide vital information for your strategic plan. Then review your current vision and mission. Are they still relevant or do they need to be updated? Work out your priorities. What should management focus on implementing first? Is your competitive advantage the same or have you lost it? What are your competitors doing? Which market segments should you be playing in? Is there any ‘Blue Ocean, completely new markets? These are important questions that need answers in order for you and your business to successfully move forward. Start to set optimistic goals with realistic timeframes and set strong KRA’s, (Key Result Area’s), along with how these outcomes will be measured as milestones of success. Lastly, create a risk management matrix to identify and measure levels of acceptable and unacceptable risk. Once done then allocate resources for implementation and execution of your new strategic plan!

SPECIAL DELIVERY OF CHRISTMAS SPIRIT TO OUR OLDER RESIDENTS Each year the Mayor calls on the Lithgow community to donate a present to the Mayor’s Christmas gift appeal for residents of Lithgow’s aged care facilities.

This year due to covid restrictions Council wasn’t able to accept donations from the community however the residents of our 4 aged care facilities didn’t miss out. Mayor “Santa” Ray Thompson made sure that each resident of our aged care facilities was given a small gift this Christmas to let them know they are remembered and appreciated by the wider community. Wishing each of our aged care residents a happy and safe Christmas and all the best for 2021.

BUSH FIRE RECOVERY AND COMMUNITY EVENT REALISED

The 21st of December 2019 will be forever remembered as the day Lithgow held its breath as the Gospers Mountain fire came to town. As a community we all hoped for the best, leading up to Christmas. Photo credit: Brigitte Grant Photography

On the 13 January 2020 an Extraordinary Council meeting was held, which Councillor Stephen Lesslie and I took the initiative to request. It gave our residents across the Lithgow Local Government area the opportunity to express their feelings, tell the Councillors their stories and concerns.

At the February 2020 Lithgow Council meeting, I brought forward a Notice of Motion that Lithgow City Council host a Bush Fire Expo. The purpose was to bring the community together, working towards a greater understanding and preparation for future fire seasons. On the first weekend of December 2020 my initiative was realised. The Lithgow City Council bush fire recovery and community event was held. It was funded by phase one of the joint NSW and Commonwealth Government bush fire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery funds. I am very pleased and thankful that the Lithgow City Council staff, led by Community Recovery Officer Rachel Nicoll, were able to deliver the Covid-19 safe event, successfully bringing together residents, recovery services and emergency services. I look forward to the possibility of another Lithgow City Council bush fire recovery and community event in 2021.

In the words of Pablo Picasso, painter and innovator, “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” All the best with your effective strategic plan and wishing you every success for 2021. “Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers, and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individuals core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effective and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision.”

21.12.19: THE DAY WE’LL NEVER FORGET sound of sirens. I could see homes on fire in Lithgow. There were choppers in the air. There was smoke, and people were scared. Community members started arriving at the club. Some asked what was going to happen. Cars towing trailers filled with farm animals pulled up. Amidst that terrible emergency on that terrible day, the Lithgow Workies Club served as an oasis of calm and compassion. Nobody was turned away. The very young and the very senior, animals big and small—all were made welcome and reassured by the calm, friendly and familiar staff at the Lithgow Workies Club, who, at the same time, were no doubt worried about their own families, friends and properties. So today, I would like to thank and pay tribute to the management and staff of Lithgow Workies for the courage, kindness and compassion they displayed on that day and on many others during that awful summer.

Andrew at the Lithgow Workies with general manager Geoff Wheeler on 21st December, 2019, when the Club became a refuge for residents escaping the blaze During a speech in the last week of Parliament, I took the opportunity to reflect on one of Lithgow’s darkest days: Saturday 21 December 2019, when the hills around Lithgow exploded into flames. I was also grateful to be able to officially acknowledge and thank the team at Lithgow Workies Club for the role they played in providing refuge for so many people in such an incredibly difficult time. Here’s an excerpt from my speech:

In particular, I would like to acknowledge: general manager Geoff Wheeler; directors Howard Fisher, Michael Quinn, Ray Warren, Darryl Goodwin, William Gregory, Trevor Schram, and Darry Fitzgerald; and staff members Shane Wade, Julie Rushworth, Shae Gillard, John Pillans, Linda Crowe, Brian Bonus, Joel Bilby, Merilyn Moore, Donna Bender, Lexi Smith, Kurt Lewicki, Gavin Wormald, Jamie O’Conner, Tony Northey, Dawn Hinchcliff, David Sutherland, Gilles D’Argent, Joy Brown, Tim Standing, Mark McPhail, Mohammed Tahsin, Luke McLean, Dylan Williams, Chris Starkey, Wendy Halpin, Kayla Anlzark, Brooke Tilley, Jonathon Engeler, Jillian Wheeler, Melanie Quinn, Jemaya Staines, Mitchel Cunningham, Bailee Staines, Sarah Mariner, Nicole Brookes, Marie McFadden, Sheena Braine, Lyn McCann, Dorelle Barbaro, Donna McManus, Kristy Futcher, Renae Piggott and Saaskia Girdler. If Australia wants to see a study in courage and bravery, compassion, love and kindness, it should take a good look at how Lithgow and the communities of the Central West dealt with the bushfire emergency during that summer of black.

I was standing outside the (Lithgow Workies) club as the emergency was at its height. You could feel the heat from the flames from the car park. The air was filled with the

The Museum has accumulated an estimated 200,000 records and documents from a range of sources since it began 24 years ago, notably the Australian Government and the owner Andrew with Museum President Renzo Benedet, custodian Donna White and Secretary Kerry Guerin

Some documents date back to 1908, the year land was purchased to begin construction of the Factory. It opened in June 1912 with 190 employees.

The Museum’s hardworking volunteers have been doing an incredible job cleaning, cataloging and digitising these documents and records. I am thrilled the Australian Government can assist with this extensive and extremely important project.

$1.36M HARTLEY VALE ROAD UPGRADE COMPLETE I love to see a project completed, and this week I got to do just that on the Hartley Vale Road. It was great to catch up with local residents Greg Noble and Geoff Dreves to inspect the newly-sealed Hartley Vale Road. The $1,363,500 upgrade to the road, which was jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments will make it much safer and accessible for motorists in the area. Part of the funding has come from the Australian Government’s $191 million Fixing Local Roads Program, which is designed to assist to accelerate these works, improve safety and support local economies. This project has been great for the local community as it has supported tradies with jobs and businesses during these tough times. ROAD SAFETY AND JOBS BOOST ON THE ROAD SOONER FOR LITHGOW The Australian and New South Wales Governments’ accelerated $398 million investment in road safety improvements through the Safer Roads Program is starting to make a big difference in regional communities, with works underway across the state and many more soon to kick off.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and State Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said projects to be rolled out under this program were targeted at sustainable and long-term reductions in road trauma, to assist NSW to move closer to zero fatalities. “Projects like these can mean the difference between someone getting home or not – and collectively make NSW roads safer for all of us, Mr Toole said. “We know this is particularly vital on our regional and rural roads, with high-level trauma on country roads accounting for two-thirds of all road deaths in the state. “These works will save lives and bolster the resilience of the state’s rural and regional road networks, meaning smoother, safer trips to school, work or even the shops – which will make a real difference for those in the bush who depend on them for their day-to-day lives. “I know that safer roads and better access are important issues for the communities across Lithgow and will help them bounce-back from the challenges of the last year, The Castlereagh Highway near Capertee will see a $1.3 million upgrade, including: wider centrelines, widened shoulders, clearzone marking and flexible safety barriers being installed. “We have listened to commuters that travel the Castlereagh, and we have acted – residents can rest assured I will keep fighting day-in and day-out for the infrastructure our community needs to thrive, Mr Toole said. “Absolutely nothing is more important than ensuring

each and every commuter on our local roads gets home to their loved ones safe and sound at the end of each trip, which is why every single dollar we spend on vital safetyimproving upgrades is a dollar well spent. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government committed $140 million towards the program in June 2020 to stimulate the economy and create jobs, while getting Australians home sooner and safer. “Our funding injection for the NSW Safer Roads Program is about getting boots on the ground and shovels in the dirt to ensure this critical program of

works is delivered as quickly as possible, saving lives and livelihoods, the Deputy Prime Minister said. “59 additional Safety Road Program projects are being accelerated, which we expect will prevent around 590 serious injuries or fatalities. “The Safer Roads Program will also create around 950 direct and indirect jobs over the life of the projects, putting reliable work on the books for local construction companies and ensuring more cash flows through local businesses and communities doing it tough. The NSW Government is spending $822 million over five years through the Safer Roads program, with $258 million allocated in 2020 to accelerate program delivery.

JOIN THE FARM TO ORGANISATION PRODUCER DIRECTORY

More than 60 producers and growers have already signed up to Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West’s Farm to Organisation Producer Directory. ‘Farm to Organisation’ is a first of its kind approach to creating new pathways for producers and farmers to market directly to local businesses, organisations and institutions such as schools, restaurants and health facilities. This venture, supported by Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations, Charles Sturt University and Orange F.O.O.D Week, aims to deliver economic benefits to Central West producers and communities with the added health benefits of consuming fresh, locally sourced food. RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the Producer Directory helps to simplify the process for buyers seeking local produce, and producers seeking local customers.

“There are over 60 growers and producers from the Central West already listed on the directory and with the generous support of Orange F.O.O.D Week, it is continuing to grow, said Mr Harma. “We are calling on local producers and manufacturers to join the directory so we can showcase the quality and diverse range of produce from our region. The Farm to Organisation Producer Directory features a number of categories such as beverages, cheese and dairy, chocolate and sweets, dressings and dips, eggs, flour, fruit and vegetables, honey, meat and poultry, mushrooms and truffles, nuts, oils and olives and preserves and pastes. “The Central West is renowned for its fine food and the directory will play a big part in ensuring more organisations, businesses, institutions and communities can access the wonderful produce that is grown right here

in our own backyard, added Mr Harma. “We would all like to buy and consume more locally produced food to support our farmers, but we also know that reducing food miles is better for the environment and our health. The directory will help to create a stronger local supply chain and I encourage interested parties from across the region to join us on this new local food movement as we inspire change in the way we procure, deliver and consume food in the Central West. The Farm to Organisation Producer Directory will be launched as part of the Orange and District F.O.O.D Week program in 2021 with two events taking place at the Orange CWA Hall on April 14 and 15. TAKE A WALK THROUGH LITHGOW’S SOCIAL HISTORY VIA THE LITHGOW LIBRARY CATALOGUE Access to 1832 digital photographs from the Lithgow Mercury Collection is now available to search, browse and view, via the Lithgow Library Catalogue.

One of the unexpected benefits for the library of the enforced shutdowns, working from home, and reduced opening hours due to COVID restrictions, has been the ability to undertake tasks that can be difficult to accomplish when the library is operating normally. When Len Ashworth retired from the Lithgow Mercury he donated a large collection of photographs to the Lithgow Library. At one time most have appeared in various Lithgow Mercury articles dating back to 1962. The Lithgow Mercury Photograph Collection consists of 1,832 photographs, reflecting a time line of Lithgow going back to the 1800s right through into the 2000s. Many were taken from 1962 to 2000 and are a social history of Lithgow from community events, sport and even the shopping. Significant events standout, such as the Bracey store fire in 1970, the dedication ceremony of

the Marjorie Jackson statue, and the important visitors such as Gough Whitlam and the Queen. Library volunteer Kay Ross organised the photographs into various categories, creating lists that library staff could search. It was always the intention to incorporate them into the library catalogue but some projects require the right timing to commence. With the library going into shutdown in March due to COVID-19 and with a number of staff required to work from home, projects that were sitting on the back burner were brought forward. One of the priorities was to catalogue the Lithgow Mercury Collection. Sharon Lewis who undertook the cataloguing project says, “There are numerous old photographs that I haven’t seen anywhere else. It is worth browsing the collection on the catalogue to get an overview.â€? The Lithgow Mercury Collection can be accessed via the Lithgow Library webpage http://lithgow.library.com. Once there search the catalogue for the Lithgow Mercury Collection and browse the thumbnails. The library would like to acknowledge the enormous

"SANTA MADE AN APPEARANCE IN PORTLAND LAST WEEKEND AS THE ANNUAL TOY RUN RODE THROUGH TOWN ON SATURDAY MORNING"

contribution that Kay Ross made to the local history collection over her long tenure of volunteering with the library. She is sadly missed by the library staff; however her legacy will go on in the projects she worked on that make the local history collection more accessible to the community.

Now under new management, come in and taste the difference for yourself

How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Saturday 19th December at 7:30pm on Nine This time of year, nothing says it’s almost Christmas than the awesome movies that all the channels put on. This epic Jim Carrey offering of the age-old classic is especially great. A really delightful kids film with a very Christmas-sy message. Also stars Taylor Momsen (Gossip Girl), Christine Baranski and Molly Shannen. In this live-action adaptation of the beloved children's tale by Dr Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything Christmas-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Momsen).

THE BLOODY CUTTING

Supplied by Celia Ravesi - Publicity & Events - Lithgow branch of the National Trust Australia (NSW)

September saw the renaming of a long since bypassed portion of Mitchell’s 1832 Bathurst Road where it climbs a steep ridge near Rydal just west of the Blue Mountains.

Renamed Bloody Cutting Road at the behest of local historians and the Lithgow Branch of the National Trust, the new name acknowledges the Bloody Cutting, an eighty metre defile, a single cart width wide, cut by hand through hard rock by convict road gangs in the 1830s. Located just up the hill from the site of the infamous No 2 Stockade Cox’s River, the cutting’s name captures the angst these early workers felt for this element of the Western Road project. This clever renaming by Lithgow City Council, drawing on the convicts own vernacular, will forever be a reminder of its painful history. “The recent renaming of Old Western Road Rydal as Bloody Cutting Road represents a remarkable initiative by Council to highlight to passers by the incredible history of our area. The new name acknowledges the Bloody Cutting, a narrow eighty metre defile, a single cart width wide, that was cut through hard rock by Surveyor General Mitchell’s road gangs in the 1830s,” said Ramsay Moodie, Lithgow Branch of the National Trust. “This name change highlights the historic significance of this short piece of Mitchells 1832 road to Bathurst that has long been relegated to the role of a secondary road leading down to the backwaters of Lake Lyell,” said Mr Moodie.

In the 1830s the country at the top of lake Lyell was home to nearly seven hundred convicts and their keepers at the No 2 Stockade Cox’s River. That was at a time when Lithgow’s only residents were Andrew Brown of Cooerwull, at Bowenfels and Thomas Brown at Eskbank further up the Valley. Convicts slaved on the road from

Mt Victoria to Mt Lambie but no section of that work was more detested than the Bloody Cutting, the defile cut through the bottom of the Rydal ridge, as we might call it now, to access the north slope of the ridge, facilitating the road’s climb to cross the divide at Mt Lambie.

EIGHT TIPS TO LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON The festive season can often trigger feelings of loneliness, isolation and/ or grief. To help people manage during this time, the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) have put together eight tips to help people in this situation.

RAMHP Coordinator Sonia Cox said 2020 has been an unprecedented year in terms of a loss of financial stressors, relationship challenges, isolation, grief, and high levels of uncertainty involved. “If you know someone in your neighbourhood who may have been doing it tough, now is the time to reach out and check that they’re okay. “Our team has developed the following useful tips which might help provide some extra support to those that really need it,” Sonia said. • If you know someone experiencing grief, acknowledge that this may be the first Christmas without their loved one. Show that you care and suggest that while it may be difficult, they are welcome to join you and your family for Christmas. Alternatively, you could let them know about a community lunch. • If they don’t want to inconvenience your family, make a plate for them, and drop it off (don’t forget to add a bonbon and some Christmas cheer to the plate) • Invite a neighbour to come and watch Carols in the Domain or Carols by Candle lights with you and your family • Offer to help decorate their Christmas tree (children love doing this and could help) or perhaps help decorate a tree in their front garden – don’t forget to offer to help take it down • If there is a frail or aged person who lives in your street or nearby and who doesn’t have a lot of visitors, pop in with some treats or shortbread on a plate. (Tip: if you use your own – it gives you an excuse to go back and call in

A hand crafted locally made gift this Christmas A year in the making, the Sacred Feminine jewellery range reflects Ron’s lifelong connectedness to precious metals and gemstones. It features eight styles of silver rings set with amethyst, peridot, turquoise, uncut aquamarine and Australia’s national gemstone, the opal. Their shapes reveal ``the balance we're all looking at in ourselves ‘’ – the femininity of fine jewellery design with the masculinity of metal. The new jewellery range follows Ron’s art show Adorn at Hartley Historic Site in November 2019, which upscaled many of his small designs into larger sculptures. ``I like to think of these new jewellery designs as wearable art, which is significant given that many people have a deep emotional connection to artworks,’’ Ron says. Talisman Gallery at Hartley historic village, Great Western Hwy (400m before turn off to Jenolan Caves heading west) is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday. later to collect the plate and check they’re okay) • Throw a Christmas party in your front yard. Invite your neighbours along and ask them to bring a plate to share. If you know someone who is experiencing loneliness, make a special effort to knock on their door and invite them personally • For those people who live away from you, make the effort to call a few days before Christmas, ask what their plans are, set a time and make sure you follow up • And finally, don’t forget to take the opportunity to look after yourself – Christmas can be a busy time of the year. Remember you can provide alternatives to alcohol such as mocktails to celebrate (you cannot enjoy the celebration if you can't remember it). If you do notice stress in yourself it’s important to recognise it and get help if you need to. Sonia said the festive season is a time when people are expected to feel happy but for many people it can accentuate those feelings of loneliness, grief, and isolation. “We can all do our bit to be caring, supportive listeners and good neighbours,” Sonia said.

Where to get help If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call  000  or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. IT'S SMOKIN'!

This salmon recipe is a surefire winner for a Christmas lunch, and if you are lucky enough to have some left over makes amazing burgers the next day.

TARANA FARMERS’ MARKET

(Covid-Safe) 4th Sunday of every month Hot smoked bourbon salmon

Music - Local Produce - Arts & Crafts Support your local farmers! 9 am - 1 pm

INGREDIENTS • 1 whole side of salmon, pin boned and scaled. • American Honey Bourbon • 1 cup Red Rub (see below) • Olive oil

Method

1. Take your Salmon side and if it hasn’t already been done, pin bone. This is the removal of the small bones from along the rib of the fish. Run your hand along, and you can feel the bones, using tweezers, grab the bones and pull them out one by one. 2. Trim up the salmon to remove any of the belly part still left, there is not much meat there and it presents better if it’s gone. Rub the skin side with some olive oil. 3. Rub the whole flesh side down with some bourbon, massage it into the flesh. 4. Coat in the Red Rub and distribute evenly across the salmon. 5. Get your charcoal BBQ ready for indirect cooking at a medium heat, around 160 degrees. I also place a cooking stone in the BBQ for this one and get that nice and hot. 6. Place the salmon, skin side down on the cooking surface. 7. Add smoking chips to the heat and get a good smoke going for around 20 minutes. 8. Check the salmon after 20 minutes by pressing on the thickest part. You want the consistency to be like a medium steak, slightly spongy but not soft. 9. Depending on the size of your salmon it will need between another 15-20 minutes at this point. But keep an eye on it every 10 minutes to ensure it doesn’t get over cooked. 10. Once it’s done, use a large lifter (I have a pizza flipper that works perfectly) and place the whole piece on a board. 11. Serve in the centre of the table, it will just pull apart beautifully with a pair of tongs, and then watch people fight over the crispy skin.

Hot Tip

One of the best things about this recipe is there are sometimes leftovers, and it makes the most amazing burgers for another meal. Just combine any left over salmon with 1/2 cup of bread crumbs, zest and juice of half a lemon, some finely chopped dill, and a 1/2 teaspoon of grated horseradish. Form into burgers and cook on your BBQ flat plate. Serve on a crusty roll with some fresh rocket and a good tartare sauce or dill mayo. Happy Days.

Basic Red Rub

This is a standard rub that you can use on everything from ribs to smoked salmon. The combination of flavours works well with any meat and even chicken or some fish. It is a bunch of powdered spices so it will keep for a very long time in an air tight container in your pantry. The recipe is written in parts, so you can make as much or as little as you want.

NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM: THERE ARE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CENTRAL WEST

In 2020, most of us have been challenged personally and professionally, and it’s certainly a year no one will forget. However, it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to employment.

Local employment and training services provider, VERTO, has seen some fantastic employment outcomes in 2020, and want to encourage those impacted to reach out. “At a time when much of the media focus is on the challenges, we really want people to know that there are opportunities out there,” says VERTO Chief Executive Officer, Ron Maxwell. “It can be easy to feel disheartened in a tough job market, particularly for those who might face additional barriers, but we’ve seen outcomes for people from all backgrounds, all ages and all abilities,” he adds. Maxwell points to the story of Daniel Johnson, a young man with a disability who is gaining independence and confidence thanks to a new job, as a great example of what can be achieved. “The VERTO Disability Services team helped Daniel find a marketing assistant role with Laing and Simmons this year, a job he loves that has also enabled him to buy his first car.” He says parents, who may have given up career or study opportunities to take on family responsibilities, should explore their options in 2021. “In Bathurst this year, we helped a young mum who

didn’t have her HSC to gain qualifications and a great career in aged care. “Aged care is a great example of an industry that needs more qualified workers regardless of the downturn, and there are many opportunities right here in the Central West.” Maxwell encourages anyone facing employment challenges, whether they have recently lost employment, are long-term unemployed or have additional barriers to get in touch. “The VERTO team is always working hard to connect

employers with job seekers to help people find the right jobs, and that can be life changing. “Whether you are a job seeker or an employer, it’s worth talking to VERTO to explore opportunities here in the Central West,” he concludes. VERTO is a community owned, not-for-profit organisation delivering a range of apprenticeship, community support, employment and training services to assist individuals, employers and industries. VERTO can be found here in the Central West and in over 40 locations across NSW, ACT and VIC. For more information, visit verto.org.au.

From mid-December to 17 February 2021, readers across the state are encouraged to read Sydney author Andrew Pippos’s debut novel Lucky’s. Lucky’s is described by the Guardian Australia as a “must-read saga, and a gripping monument to the Greek diaspora”. Central to the theme of Lucky’s is the iconic

Greek milk bar, found in so many Australian country towns. Perhaps whilst reading Lucky’s you might even reminisce about our own local heritage here in Lithgow. Join in and celebrate NSW Reads by getting a copy of Lucky’s today. Lithgow Library Learning Center has made Lucky’s available in multiple formats for your convenience. If you require assistance downloading a copy or placing a reservation please contact the library on 6352 9100.

RYDAL SHEEP SHOW On Friday the 4th of December, the Rydal showground was the venue for a school Corriedale sheep show. With most shows cancelled this year due to Covid 19 both judges and students were excited to be able to attend the show.

Judge, Katrina Abbott from Boolina Corriedales at Brewongle and associate judge, Claire Tilly from Ben Bullen cast their expert eye over the 38 sheep and their handlers from Blaney, Bathurst and Lithgow High schools and Skillset, Bathurst. Blayney High School won supreme Exhibit with their champion ewe and Skillset Bathurst won champion ram. The champion group of three sheep was won by Bathurst High. As well as the judging of sheep, handlers were also judged throughout the day, with the Under 15 years winner being Kate Williamson from Blayney High School and the over 15 years going to Leah Salazar from Bathurst High School. The 40 students who attended were given tips and hints on handling their sheep and what judges are looking for in a prize-winning Corriedale sheep. Organiser, Rick Hoolihan would like to thank Glen Esk Corriedales, Silmac Bathurst, Rydal Show Society and

PAYROLL TAX RELIEF KEEPING NSW IN BUSINESS

FUNDING AVAILABLE TO BOOST SUMMER FUN Councils in our electorate can sign up for a share of $1.3 million in NSW Government funding to deliver free events, activities or experiences to enliven local public spaces this summer. Grants of up to $10,000 were available through the Festival of Place Summer Fun(d) program to activate the community and encourage people to stay local. Councils are encouraged to deliver free activities such as innovative lighting displays, outdoor markets, micro-festivals, open-air theatre, street parties, lawn libraries and street entertainment. Businesses across our region have done it tough this year and this funding will help to get people out and about in a safe way just in time for the festive season. I encourage councils to put forward innovative ideas for events that will help people connect after a challenging year. We’ve already seen how our public space programs such as Streets as Shared Spaces and Your High Street have restored confidence and helped to lift local business activity. These $10,000 grants, in addition to the relaxation of planning rules for alfresco dining and local events, will give councils the tools they need to attract people to come out, shop locally, and enjoy our magnificent summer weather. Councils can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with a simple online form, in December or January, to boost events over Christmas and during summer.

About 24,700 business owners claimed the 25 per cent payroll tax reduction and deferred payment options, introduced in March, had provided businesses much needed cash flow and allowed them more scope to retain employees. The waiver meant that close to $380 million was able to go back to keeping people in work and businesses afloat during an unprecedented situation. As well as those reductions, 2,300 payroll tax customers have established payment arrangements for their deferred tax liability, worth more than $650 million. Supporting businesses by lowering costs through tax cuts and fee reductions has been pivotal to the NSW Government’s COVID-19 economic response. We've worked to free up cash for businesses during this critical time by waiving or deferring their tax. Further payroll tax relief was announced for businesses as part of the 2020-21 NSW Budget in November, with the payroll tax rate reduced from 5.45 per cent to 4.85 per cent for a two-year period, and backdated to 1 July 2020, along with the threshold being permanently increased from $1 million to $1.2 million.

COVID-COMPLACENCY While the people of NSW have done an incredible job at curbing the spread of the virus, I want to remind people to continue to be diligent when it comes to personal hygiene – especially as we come into the festive season, and begin to see more social events. If this scarecrow on the outskirts of Rydal is still taking precautions, you should too!!

UNCLAIMED MONEY THE PERFECT STOCKING FILLER I’m urging everyone to reconnect with their money and get some extra cash to spend this Christmas, by checking for any unclaimed money held by Revenue NSW. More than $461 million in unclaimed money is sitting with Revenue NSW that would be better reunited with its rightful owners. Christmas is a time of year where all families could do with a little extra. COVID-19 has also seen many families tighten their budgets. A quick search could help identify money that is sitting, waiting to be claimed through Revenue NSW, that could be used these Summer holidays. It’s quick and easy to check if you have unclaimed money. Simply visit the Revenue NSW website and type your name into the free search tool. If you do find some money, lodge a claim with Revenue NSW and collect your money. This money belongs to the people of NSW and I want to make sure it goes back to them. It only takes a few minutes and you could walk away with some extra Christmas money in your pocket to spend on loved ones. The NSW Government holds unclaimed money indefinitely until it is claimed. It includes share dividends, trust accounts, refunds, commissions, deceased estates and money from a range of other sources.
