#teamkeely FUNDRAISER A GREAT SUCCESS

After months of planning and training, the #teamkeely 12 hour relay was held on Saturday 5th December at The Foundations in Portland. (from front page)

Over 100 people signed in for the walk throughout the day, however the 4 super stars of the day were Andrew Neville and Craig Cutting, who ran almost non-stop for 12 hours straight, and Jo Curran and her brother Luke who rode for the entire time. Over $21,000 has been raised so far and there are still

donations coming in. “Although the weather was not on our side the rain did not put a damper on the incredible atmosphere of the day,” said one of the organisers, Brooke Whitelock. “The relay team were nothing short of amazing smashing out almost 400kms between them. Thank you to everyone who supported Keely's special day by volunteering, walking a loop, donating raffle prizes and raising money towards Keely's future,” said Brooke. “It is extremely moving to see first hand how incredibly loving and generous our community is,” Brooke concluded. The event coincided with the return of the night markets which was also a great success despite the rain in the evening.

FUTURE CUSTOMERS HELP SHAPE NEW FLEET

Future customers of the new Regional Rail fleet have had their first look at the design of the new train mock-up during targeted user engagement sessions in Bathurst, using a life-size detailed model of the train.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said feedback provided by customer groups and staff during the sessions would help refine the design and finishes of the new train. “It’s so exciting to see the train start to take shape, and for future users to be able to give us their thoughts on things like passenger boarding and alighting, wheelchair access, accessible toilets and bike storage,” Mr Toole said. “This life-size model allows people to move inside sections of the train, which shows our designers how people with different needs interact with different aspects

news

of the train layout so that they can further develop the design. “Over the past few weeks, CAF, the train manufacturer, has taken the full range of users through the model train so they can experience the new train and provide input into the design. “They include people with disabilities, travellers with luggage, parents with children, cyclists travelling with their bikes and staff who will be operating the trains. “The Regional Rail fleet will mark a new era for regional rail – and this collaborative approach will go a long way to ensuring it meets the travel needs of all customers.” The $2.8 billion Regional Rail Project will see replacement of NSW TrainLink’s ageing XPT, XPLORER and Endeavour trains with 29 new trains, which will be tested, maintained and serviced at the new facility at Dubbo.

The first new trains are expected to be running from 2023. For more information, please visit https://www.transport.nsw.gov. au/projects/current-projects/regional-rail

LITHGOW CITY COUNCIL HOSTS IMPORTANT EVENT FOR BUSHFIRE-IMPACTED RESIDENTS Local residents, including Emergency Service volunteers and people impacted by last year's bushfires - came over the weekend for the special event hosted by Lithgow City Council, and made possible through the funding from the Commonwealth and NSW Governments.

everyone was able to take something from the day," Lithgow Council’s Community Recovery Officer said. Highlights from the event, including images and the ABC Central West coverage from the event is available on Council’s website at: https://council.lithgow.com/ bushfire-event/ The Bushfire Recovery & Community Day was funded by phase one of the joint NSW and Commonwealth Government Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Funds. For more information, please call Council on 6354 9999.

The Bushfire Recovery & Community Day was a free, Covid-safe event organised to help residents connect with recovery services, plan and prepare for the future and thank RFS and emergency service volunteers following last summer's horror bushfire season - which started in late October and burned into early 2020. Residents from Clarence, Dargan, Lithgow, Newnes, Running Stream and Wolgan heard from Resilience NSW Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons and visited an exhibition of services and recovery agencies. Award winning journalist and Emcee Gavin Coote facilitated the engaging panel sessions and presentations and media partner ABC Central West broadcasted live on the Saturday morning. Lithgow Councillors and staff joined the community at the event. Lithgow Council was pleased to be able to deliver an event that not only supported impacted residents but provided important information to individuals and the community via the representatives that were engaged. “The feedback from the community about the event has been overwhelmingly positive and we're so pleased

news IS YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS MODEL WORKING FOR YOU? Better Business Column by Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“Like seeing the doctor for an annual exam, regularly assessing a business model is an important management activity that allows an organization to evaluate the health of its market position and adapt accordingly.” - Alex Osterwalder It is an excellent time of the year to start to plan strategies to carry our business into 2021 and beyond. This week, myself and many of my clients, will reexamine our business models by using a great tool created by Alex Osterwalder called a Business Model Canvas. It essentially asks us to challenge our current business models and to ensure that the nine building blocks integrate effectively. Those building blocks are, Key Partners, Key Activities, Value Proposition, Customer Relationship, Customer Segment, Key Resources, Cost Structure, and Revenue Stream.

Issue 340 - 11th December 2020

LAKE PILLANS BOARDWALK BEING REPLACED AFTER BUSHFIRES Lithgow City Council has awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the Lake Pillans Boardwalk, destroyed in the December 2019 bushfire event. “Lake Pillans is a well-used and much loved nature reserve adjoining the Blast Furnace heritage site that is enjoyed by many local people and visitors,” said the Mayor Ray Thompson. “Many people have contacted Council asking what Council is doing about its replacement so we are very pleased to announce that work will commence soon.” After receiving a number of tenders, Council has awarded the construction contract to a local company – Central Industries. All design work and environmental studies have been completed with the boardwalks to be reconstructed in the first half of 2021. The original boardwalk was almost completely destroyed in the bushfire requiring Council to seek a new

concept and engineering design to meet current standards. The new boardwalk will be attractive and compliant with current building and access codes. Council looks forward to its re-opening for public use by mid-2021.

If these building blocks aren’t working coherently then it time to make changes and quickly. 2020 is certainly a year where many businesses have had to pivot and change their business models to match the everchanging landscape of their markets, caused by Covid-19 and other factors. Did you lose market share? Are you are still achieving the revenue goals you have set? Did your current suppliers fulfil your needs? Are there new market opportunities? Are you pursuing the same key activities but at less profit? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself to get a reasonable picture of where your current business model is standing. A Business Model Canvas gives you those answers in simplified visual format which makes it easy to get an overview of your entire business. Once you have completed the canvas you can then pinpoint any area of weakness and plan strategies on how to strengthen or overcome that area. An example of this, is when our company lost 90% of its revenue due to the pandemic in March of this year. We had to pivot and immediately go to online coaching via Zoom. We now have that as a regular offering and can coach entrepreneurs anywhere in the world. We have fast-forwarded our online training platform that was due for release in 2023 but will now be launched in early 2021. It has been added as one of our new revenue streams and shifts our training market segment from being very localised to being global. Another important area of focus is our ‘Customer relationships’. We have not been in regular contact with many of our clients or past clients as we normally would. We will allocate more time next year to calling our clients and actively listening to what their real needs are and what issues we can help them resolve. I use what I call the, “Power of 10’. Each day I will complete 10 tasks on my to do list and one thing on that list is to ring 10 clients per day. That is 50 clients per week, and over 200 per month. That sort of key activity creates its own momentum. If you would like to know more about the Business Model Canvas you can find a detailed explanation in Alex’s bestselling book "Business Model Generation". (https://canvanizer.com/new/business-model-canvas) “Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers, and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individuals core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effective and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision.”

SUE KEARNS RETIRING FROM ST JOSPEHS AFTER A 44 YEAR CAREER IN EDUCATION

St Josephs Portland Principal, Sue Kearns is retiring at the end of this school year after a long commitment to the education of many generations of Portland children.

Mrs Kearns began teaching in 1976, originally in the public system in Lithgow then out to Portland Central School and then transferring to the Catholic system in 1986 to take up a role at St Josephs in Portland. “Going from public to catholic was a big difference, it was more the class sizes from large to so much smaller,” said Mrs Kearns. In 2000, Mrs Kearns won the role as principal of the school, and has fulfilled it ever since. When asked about stand out moments in her career, Mrs Kearns said the school’s centenary celebration in 2005 was a memorable occasion. “Celebrating the School’s centenary as well as the Church’s in 2005. Bringing the whole of Portland in on the celebrations, old students returning and events held at the Clubs and Pubs in town,” said Mrs Kearns Both of Mrs Kearns daughters, Renae and Simone have followed in their mothers footsteps into the education field, and have both risen to the tops of their field with Renae now Principal of St Patricks school in Lithgow and Simone taking over the role as Principal at St Josephs. “It’s a very affirming as a parent to see my children continue in the same field,” said Mrs Kearns. She is very glad that Simone applied and felt ready to take on the role. “I’m very confident and very happy that Simone will continue with the vision that I have had for the school, with changes and new ideas for the future as well, St Josephs will be excellent hands,” said Mrs Kearns. Staff and students this week celebrated Mrs Kearns’ final days with a pizza party which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Residents recovering from last summer’s bushfires in the Central West are set to benefit from vital face to face support services being extended for another year. Recovery Support Services link people to their own personalised recovery support worker, who can help them navigate and access services and disaster assistance packages. So far 4,200 families across 25 local government areas have accessed their local Recovery Support Service. Federal Member for Calare, and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, Andrew Gee, said the extension would ensure long-term support is available for impacted communities throughout their recovery. “Almost twelve months have passed since the devastating summer bushfires and they continue to extract a heavy physical and mental toll on many here in the Central West,” Mr Gee said. “There is still a lot of recovery work to be done and it’s important that people in our community know where to go to get the vital funding and support they need, when they need it. “That is why the Australian and NSW governments are pleased to provide $8.2 million to extend the Recovery Support Services for another 12 months. “While there is a wide range of federal and state bushfire support initiatives available, navigating through the criteria and information can add to an already stressful situation. “The extension of this flexible and customised recovery service will ensure fire affected communities, such as

facebook.com/thevillagevoicecentralwest

@villagevoicelithgow

Lithgow and Mid-Western, can access long-term support throughout their recovery journeys. ”We understand that every person is recovering at their own pace. “I encourage anyone who needs advice, assistance or guidance on the next steps in their recovery to make contact with their local Recovery Support Service. These free services are there to help everyone impacted by last summer’s fires,” Mr Gee said.

Recovery Support Services are funded under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement (DFRA) which is jointly funded with the Australian Government. The extension takes the total funding for the services to almost $17 million.

NSW GOVERNMENT FIXING LOCAL ROADS PROGRAM COMPLETED AT HARTLEY VALE ROAD The NSW Governments Fixing Local Roads Program is investing more than $1.3 million into delivering improved roads along Dark Corner Road and Hartley Vale Road. Today, we saw the first of these roads being officially opened by Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Hon Paul Toole. Mayor of Lithgow City Council, Ray Thompson and residents of Hartley Vale. The Hartley Vale road of $413,600 included, roadside vegetation control, reconstruction of the road sub base and surface, reconstruction of the shoulder, upgrades to the culverts and drainage, sealing, line marking and installation of guide posts. The Australian Government is supporting the first 2 rounds of the program and have committed $191 million to build on the NSW Government’s $500 million Fixing Local Roads program, ensuring even more regional communities benefit, faster. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s

funding injection was about generating jobs, encouraging spending and stimulating local economies. NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the NSW Government was also accelerating its funding for the program to get more projects to seal, maintain and repair local roads under way faster. “We’re not just putting our foot down in terms of delivering this package – we’re turbocharging it to ensure we create jobs and create better journeys on the roads that really matter to local communities,” Mr Toole said. “This is about delivering small projects that can make a big difference for local communities – projects that will drive valuable jobs in our region over the next 12 months as councils get cracking on delivery.” “This is about delivering smoother, safer trips along the roads our community use every day – roads like Dark Corner Road and Hartley Vale Road,” Mr Toole said. “ I congratulate Lithgow City Council for delivering this project in a timely manner on behalf of the residents" Projects will need to be delivered within two years of receiving funding, to ensure that local communities are benefiting sooner. Applications for round two of the program will open later this year. Work continues on the Dark Corner Road of $949,900 to seal and repair this road.

TO SERVICE – WATER SUPPLY LITHGOW Council advises that the water supply in the area of Amiens Street, McKenzie Place, Rabaul Street, and Lemnos Street may experience a reduction in water pressure or no water.

Council is undertaking emergency repairs on the reticulation network that services Great Western Highway, Lithgow and apologises for any inconvenience. Council cannot advise a time for the completion of repairs, but will aim to minimise the period of disruption. Upon return to normal service, residents may experience dirty water for a period. Separate tubes for batteries, mobile phones & printer cartridges can be found at these locations: • Council Administration Centre, 180 Mort Street Lithgow. • Lithgow Library, 157 Main Street Lithgow. • Wallerawang Library, Main Street Wallerawang. • Portland Library, 57 Williwa Street Portland. THALES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TEAM IN LITHGOW TO DOUBLE The Small Arms Research & Development (R&D) team in Lithgow is about to double as it anticipates the future technology requirements of a digitised battlespace for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

With the Thales designed and manufactured EF88 in service with the ADF, the R&D team are looking to make radical, innovative enhancements to future small arms capability, and are looking for an additional nine of the ‘best and brightest’ engineers to join their ranks. Director Soldier Weapons Systems at Thales, Graham Evenden said that this push for development is a direct response to drive and maximise the benefit of new manufacturing processes, novel materials and AI. “We have some really exciting, technologically disruptive R&D projects going on right now, with a lot more on the horizon. “Working together with our industry and academic partners, we are aiming to deliver a ‘best of breed’ capability and ensure we support a robust and enduring Sovereign Industry Capability. “These projects are creating new roles within our R&D team, in fact it will be doubling in size. And when you look at the wider industrial ecosystem, it’s creating a lot more opportunities for growth for our SME supply chain and our partners in academia. “Army is looking towards the future and how to best meet the challenges of the changing threat environment in order to be ‘future ready’. “We’ve been a trusted partner of the Australian Army since our Small Arms factory in Lithgow began manufacturing

rifles in 1912, and we are investing heavily to ensure we are on the journey forwards with them.” Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said he welcomes the continuing commitment by Thales into its operations in Lithgow and jobs creation in the region. “The fact that Thales is set to double its research and development team in Lithgow sends a clear message that Thales is here for the long term,” he said. “Thales are a good community partner and I know their projects are at the cutting edge of technology and this investment in the future means there’s exciting times ahead for the company.” The new roles within the team will come from a broad range of engineering disciplines and will engage closely with industry, academia, and premier research bodies such as DST Group and CSIRO. If you’d like to join this dynamic team, head to SEEK to view the new roles.

They bring our farmers together, and they bring town and country together, while also putting tourism dollars into the pockets of local businesses and the broader community. “Interest in country Australia has been dramatically increasing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a 20th Century Fox film based on a true story of Gladys Alyward (Ingrid Bergman) a courageous, compassionate and indominable British maid who knew that China was the place for her. Although she is rejected as a missionary, she saves up and eventually finds her way to a small town in China and with Jeannie Lawson (Athene Seyler) she happily runs an inn there. After a couple of years, her peaceful existence is interrupted by the Japanese invasion just prior to the 2nd World War.

LANDCARE NSW AWARDS 100% OF DROUGHT AND BUSHFIRE RELIEF DONATIONS TO LANDCARE COMMUNITY Landcare NSW has awarded 100% of its funds from the 2019/2020 drought and bushfire fundraising appeal to its Landcare NSW member groups.

Landcare NSW CEO, Dr Adrian Zammit said the funding will help support Landcare groups re-establish projects and sites that have been affected by drought and bushfires. “It is so important to support our NSW Landcare community through these times. With tens of millions of dollars of damage and loss, this is just one small way we are supporting our communities back to recovery.” “The projects funded are as diverse as the affected landscapes and stretch from the south coast to western NSW, highlighting the widespread impact these extreme natural disasters have had on all Landcare communities.” Lithgow Oberon Local Landcare Coordinator,

facebook.com/thevillagevoicecentralwest

@villagevoicelithgow

Steven Fleischmann welcomed the funding. “This funding will provide native plants to help revegetate areas in the Bell and Clarence areas which were significantly impacted by bushfire. In addition are all of the other locally-affected areas within the Lithgow and Oberon LGAs impacted.” “Our region experienced drought and then catastrophic fires, so the plants will not only help our local environment recover, it will also help the community to physically recover their own backyards and help re-establish native vegetation in our own local landscapes,” Steven said. Dr Zammit said other projects across NSW included management of invasive weeds, erosion control, protection of waterways, native seed collection and restoration and re-establishment of Landcare nurseries. “Landcare NSW’s mission is to provide resources to empower Landcarers in NSW to have all that they need to care for our land, environment and communities, and this is just one way we are delivering on our mission.”

LAMBTASTIC LOIN

Deboning the meat • Use a very sharp knife, but not too big. You want to run your knife along the bone as closely as you can, removing the meat using a rolling off motion as you go.

This is one of those recipes that i came up with as an answer to a problem.

would do the job, and it probably would have, but not being a butcher I didn’t want to destroy I bought a whole rack of lamb my lamb trying. loin chops from my butcher, thinking I could cook it So it was on to plan B, which whole then cut it to serve. is described in detail below. When I got it home however, I realised I couldn’t cut through the bones, I had assumed my big cleaver

• If you are not confident to do this yourself, ask the butcher to do it for you.

Let me just say though, I am very happy to have made this mistake as it is now a firm favourite on my BBQ.

Rolled Lamb Loin Roast Ingredients

• Whole rack of loin chops (6) • Lemon & Rosemary Salt • Olive oil, salt & Pepper

Stuffing • • • • •

• Remove the meat off the other side of the bone as well. Just roll that back in after the stuffing is placed in.

1 cup of bacon, finely diced 1 cup of mushrooms, finely diced 2 red onions, finely diced Fresh thyme 1/2 cup white wine

Hot Tip

Method 1. Combine all the stuffing ingredients and some olive oil in a small fry pan and sauté over a medium heat till onions are translucent and ingredients are all coming together season with salt and pepper to taste. 2. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool. 3. Lay the deboned meat flat on your chopping board and place stuffing in centre of meat. Lay small tenderloin strip over the stuffing, the roll tightly from the end with the most meat, so that the fat wraps around the entire roll. 4. Using cooking twine, truss the meat tightly and then wrap tightly in cling wrap and place in fridge for 20 minutes.

This is really good with the Awesome Jacket Potatoes, Braised Leeks and Mushrooms.

5. Use this time to heat up your charcoal BBQ to a medium heat. 6. Unwrap the meat and liberally sprinkle olive oil and Lemon and Rosemary Salt, place in your BBQ, with a foil tray underneath the grill to catch cooking juices 7. Cover and roast for 25 minutes, then sprinkle with a bit more salt and roast for another 10 minutes. 8. Remove the meat from the BBQ, cover with foil and rest for 10 minutes. 9. To serve, remove string and slice into medallions around 10mm thick. the shape should mostly hold together and the fat on the outside is like a magic lamb crackling.

A TRULY UNIQUE LOCAL HAND CRAFTED GIFT From scouring goldfields as a youngster to making swords, wrought iron furniture and outdoor sculptures and back again, I’ve come full circle with my new Sacred Feminine collection.

A year in the making, the jewellery range reflects that journey and my lifelong connectedness to precious metals and gemstones. It features eight styles of silver rings set with amethyst, peridot, turquoise, uncut aquamarine and Australia’s national gemstone, the opal. Their shapes reveal the balance we're all looking at in ourselves – the femininity of fine jewellery design with the masculinity of metal. My own artistic journey began with jaunts around the Victorian goldfields with my dad in the 1960s, and at school with a teacher who taught mechanics and metal skills. Since then, I’ve been a fitter and turner, sold knives and Thai Chi dancing swords, been a tree surgeon, travelled to India, worked as a cook and installed security grills. Even since opening Talisman Gallery my work has evolved. First there were wrought iron pieces, polished dragons and mirrors. Then came the driftwood and large coloured glass garden sculptures. Through it all have been recurring themes – gemstones, ammonites and nautilus shells, Fibonacci spirals and the imported Balinese jewellery. I feel like I’ve come full circle. You can find Ron’s jewellery range and all his other work at his website https://talismangallery.com.au, or visit The Talisman Gallery 53 Old Great Western Hwy, Hartley NSW 2790

BATHURST REGIONAL ART GALLERY - NEW EXHIBITIONS ADRIENNE DOIG: IT’S ALL ABOUT ME! Opening Saturday 12 December

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is proud to present Adrienne Doig: It’s All About Me! opening Saturday 12 December. Through the lens of self-portraiture, Blue Mountainsbased artist Adrienne Doig (b1963), tackles the everyday with good humour and wit. Her survey Adrienne Doig: It’s All About Me! draws upon the past three decades of the artist’s practice, which fuses historical references and humour to respond to the everyday and reflect on now. Using a variety of media, including embroidery, applique, sculpture and video, Doig playfully explores intimate aspects of her life, from having a cup of tea to performing mundane housework. Embedded within her practice are layered responses to universal themes that have social, environmental and political narratives. By manipulating, reworking and combining imagery from multiple sources, Doig records her own experiences within a larger context. Hence, It’s All About Me! The exhibition Adrienne Doig: It’s All About Me! will feature early performance video artworks and her My Life As A Doll series as well as the more recent Everyday Me, a paper doll installation. Also included will be elements of recent projects commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW, for the Together in Art series and Archie Plus. Pushing the boundaries of the genre of self-portraiture, her explorations across a range of textile mediums also highlight the evolution of her ideas through the utilisation of different media. Doig graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney (1989), and has a Certificate Art and Drama from Ryflkle Folkehogskule, Norway (1983). She has undertaken residencies at the American Academy, Rome (2014), the Moya Dyring studio, Paris (2007), the Visual Arts Craft Board of the Australia Council studio residency in Milan (2003) and the Austrian Federal Chancellory studio residency in Vienna (2001). Doig has exhibited in contemporary art spaces and artist-run and commercial galleries in Australia and abroad. She has had solo exhibitions at the Research Library and Archive at the Art Gallery of NSW (2018) and Penrith Regional Gallery (2010). Her work has featured in group exhibitions at the Mornington Peninsular Regional Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, University of Queensland Art Museum and

Art Gallery of NSW. She is represented by Martin Browne Contemporary in Sydney. The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by Steven Miller, Head of the Edmund and Joanna Capon Research Library and Archive, Art Gallery of New South Wales, an interview with the Doig and Emma Collerton, BRAG Curator, and responses to artworks by a selection of Doig’s friends and colleagues. Adrienne Doig is represented by Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney. Adrienne Doig: It’s All About Me! is a BRAG exhibition curated by Emma Collerton and is supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation and Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney. This exhibition runs until Sunday 7 February 2021. Entry during standard gallery operating hours (Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-2pm) is free.

This exhibition Jurgis Miksevicius: In the Light of the Sun and Shadow of the Moon charts his development as a painter: his studies at art school in Germany, his early paintings and murals at the Bathurst Migrant Camp, and then focuses on later landscapes and philosophical ‘moon’ paintings as examples of the many genres he explored throughout his creative life. Jurgis Miksevicius: In the Light of the Sun and the Shadow of the Moon is a BRAG Exhibition. This exhibition runs until Sunday 7 February 2021. Entry during standard gallery operating hours (Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-2pm) is free.

JURGIS MIKSEVICIUS: IN THE LIGHTOF THE SUN AND THE SHADOW OF THE MOON Opening Saturday 12 December

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is proud to present Jurgis Miksevicius: In the Light of the Sun and the Shadow of the Moon opening Saturday 12 December. Lithuanian-born Jurgis Miksevicius (1923 – 2014) arrived in Australia aged 25 on the SS Charlton Sovereign with 725 other Baltic displaced emigres on 29 October 1948. Before leaving Germany, Miksevicius, had studied at a Bauhausstyle art school in Darmstadt. On arrival Miksevicius was settled at the Bathurst Migrant Camp but unlike most refugees who were transitioned out of the migrant camp after a few weeks, Miksevicius stayed for about nine months. The camp director, William Rees, was aware of Miksevicius’ artistic skills and employed him to decorate the walls of the former army barracks’ recreation hall with caricatures of great Australian sportsmen, including swimmer John Marshall and tennis champion John Bromwich. Miksevicius was also provided with a studio space and encouraged to paint. It was here, in the Bathurst Migrant Camp, that he began to experiment painting with oils and trying to come to terms with the light, the gum trees and the Bathurst landscapes. Essentially, it was here in Bathurst that he began his 70-year career as an artist in Australia.

LINDA CHANT: HOLD ME, COVER ME Opening Saturday 12 December

Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is proud to present Linda Chant: hold me, cover me opening Saturday 12 December. Cowra-based multidisciplinary artist Linda Chant’s work explores the conceptual and material nature of objects. Originally trained in painting and printmaking, Chant recently ventured into sculpture. Her small, delicate sculptures – glasses, bottles, vases and lamps manipulated, shrouded and bound with fabric – offer moments of curiosity and wonder. Literally and figuratively, they hold a moment, a memory, a thought, an action. They also allude to notions of fragility and protection. Chant explains, “Sewing to surround glass, over and around metal, is a risky procedure which draws parallels to the notion of fragility and protection.” Chant attended Riverina College of Advanced Education, graduating with a Diploma of Applied Art in 1981 and with a Diploma of Art Education the following year. She has taught Visual Arts in the UK and in metropolitan and regional NSW. Her work has featured in group exhibitions at Orange Regional Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery and Wollongong Art Gallery. In 2019, Chant was awarded the drawing prize for the Lachlan Valley Art Awards and she has been a finalist on five occasions for Calleen Art Award. A BRAG Foyer Space Exhibition This exhibition runs until Sunday 7 February 2021. Entry during standard gallery operating hours (Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-2pm) is free. SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR TWENTY SIX YEARS Once again the Lithgow area has really shown it’s generosity as the Lithgow district street machine enthusiasts hit the road for their annual Christmas toy run minus Santa this challenging Covid year. Story and photo by Les Taylor

Residents and business houses of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Cullen Bullen and Portland have shown once again shown overwhelming support for the annual event that has now been conducted for a landmark twenty six years. Three utes and a trailer plus an SUV were loaded to overflowing with toys, games, books and bikes to aid a local charity Christmas appeal. Not everyone in the local area has the good fortune of having a special Christmas with gifts for their children, a problem witnessed first hand, so the street machine

MAJOR ROLLING BACK OF COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS IN NSW This week we saw the 2sqm rule will be expanded and venue caps removed under a major easing of restrictions, as NSW continues to record zero cases of community transmission. We are grateful to the people in NSW for their patience and understanding over what has been an incredibly difficult year. The rolling back of restrictions across the State is only possible because of the excellent work of the community who have followed social distancing guidelines and continued to come forward for testing. This change will make a big difference to many businesses and will provide a real boost for jobs particularly in the service industry which has been hit hard over the past nine months. Keep getting tested with even the slightest of symptoms, maintain your social distance, don’t go to work if you are unwell and wear a mask where you cannot guarantee social distancing. As of this week, the new guidelines are: Venues including hospitality venues, retail and places of worship: 1 person per 2sqm (with 25 people permitted before the rule applies), except for: • Gyms and nightclubs (1 person per 4sqm, with a maximum of 50 people allowed in gym classes or on the dancefloor at nightclubs) Stadiums and theatres: • Outdoors: 100 per cent seated capacity, and 1 person

enthusiasts collected this huge amount of toys to give the underprivileged local kids and their struggling families a great Christmas. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Rich & Kellie Evans at the Village Voice for their publicity, R&A Chainsaws & Mowers, Bowenfels Newsagency, Bill Evans Mechanical Repairs, Wollemi Bakery in Lithgow, Wallerawang Bakery, Lithgow Bearings and Industrial Supplies plus Andrew Toole and staff at B&L Livestock and Real Estate Portland for acting as collection points - you are all very charitable people. A huge THANK YOU also to the many local residents who phoned up requesting pick up of toys along with Department of Corrective Services, Jack & Jill Preschool and the fantastic people who donated toys and books at the drop off points - we wish you all a wonderful Christmas and better times ahead. This year Santa's helpers included Roz, Kevin McKinney, Susanne and Lindsey Yeo, Dave Martin,Lyn Ellery and Les Taylor. Peter and Marion Lamb and their assistants at the Wallerawang Christian Youth Centre now have the huge job of sorting and wrapping the toys before being delivered to the needy children of our local area ready to put a huge smile on their faces on Christmas Day. Unfortunately due to a number of factors next year's toy run as such is in doubt but a toy collection will still be made for the district's children who have no chance of celebrating this fabulous time of giving and joy with our much needed and appreciated charity organisations. The spirit of Christmas giving is certainly alive in our community and may the street machine enthusiasts take this opportunity to wish the staff at the Village Voice, all the readers and everyone who made this toy run once again an outstanding success a very merry Christmas and a safe, healthy, happy new year.

EARLY CHRISTMAS FOR SENIORS With the festive season upon us, the gifts are rolling in for Seniors Card holders and I’m urging older residents to utilise discounts on electricity, home and hardware, groceries, internet and more. Christmas is about connecting with family and friends, so mobile and internet deals are an ideal way to help seniors safely spread Christmas cheer and check in on loved ones. The Christmas dazzlers aim to help older citizens live healthier, happier, more active and affordable lives. Small savings can make a big difference in the lives of seniors, especially around Christmas time. I encourage seniors to use these discounts to embrace the holidays whether it’s getting out in the yard with savings from Mitre 10 or cooking up a feast thanks to Woolworths

and IGA discounts. Seniors are deserving and respected members of our communities who are invaluable in their commitment to volunteering, caring roles and sharing knowledge. The NSW Government will continue to create opportunities that reward older people and support them in living fulfilling, active and healthy lives. Cost of living can be a challenge for older people and we want our 1.7 million NSW Seniors Card holders to get the best possible benefits with discounts and special offers from over 7000 businesses across NSW. C R E AT U R E TA L K Hot Dogs & Paddle Pools I like my hot dogs in a fresh bun with real butter & tomato sauce. Not the panting, overheated, furry variety. So let’s visit what temperature is too hot for dogs & how we can ensure they’re safe & comfortable with the hotter months coming up?

When it comes to exercise, most pooches live for it & don’t think about their own limits when I comes to heat. A good rule of thumb is if it’s over 25 degrees, rethink going out. Especially if your dog is elderly or has health issues. Whilst humans can keep cool via sweating, dogs pant to regulate theirs. If they are too hot, panting will increase & it will become increasingly difficult for them to cool down. Early morning or late evening are the best times during the Summer for a ramble, but please check the surface on which you plan to walk, the paths & roads retain heat well into the evening. Place the back of your hand on the surface, if it’s too hot for you it’s too hot for their paws!

For dogs who are designated to outdoor living there are a number of things to be diligent about. Making sure there is plenty of fresh water & shade are the top two things. If shade is limited, access to a cool laundry or investing in some shade sails is ideal. When the mercury is hitting temps of 35 degrees plus, please consider letting them inside into a cool area of the house. If this is absolutely not possible here are a few ideas to help keep them cool & comfortable. -Cooling mats or wet towels for them to lay on, however make sure they are able to move off of them when they need to. -A shell pool with shallow water is a great option now that water restrictions have eased. -Add some ice cubes to their drinking water supply to keep it cool & encourage their intake. -Frozen treats are good too & crushing them up a bit ensures they don’t choke or damage their teeth. -If you suspect your pooch has heat stroke, take them to the vet where they will act to lower the dog’s body temp, administer fluids & monitor their progress. Signs of heat stroke: rapid panting, lethargy, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, a bright red tongue, red or pale gums, thick & sticky saliva, dizziness, shock or even coma. In in doubt just give your vet a ring & they can advise. With these few things in mind we can ensure our best mates are cool as cucumbers. GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE THIS CHRISTMAS

With Christmas fast approaching, you can give a gift that is truly special by buying the 2021 Australian Women’s Health Diary. Not only will you be giving a gift which can help improve general health and wellbeing, you’ll be supporting research to save lives from breast cancer.

That is because every diary sold funds breast cancer trials research to identify new and effective breast cancer treatments and prevention. Deaths from breast cancer have fallen 30% over the past 20 years which is largely due to new treatments like Herceptin, Exemestane, Letrozole and Tamoxifen identified through the Breast Cancer Trials research program. With breast cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia in 2020, more breast cancer trials are needed to ensure every person receives the treatment they need to survive breast cancer. Lisa Wilkinson, The Project Host and proud ambassador of the diary said “The researchers at Breast Cancer Trials are working tirelessly, nationally and globally, to give more people access to breast cancer clinical trials and to prove the new treatments needed to save every life, from every type of breast cancer. The power is within all of us to help create a future free of breast cancer – please buy a diary today.” Priced at just $18.95, the 2021 Australian Women’s Health Diary is available nationally from newsagents, W o o l w o r t h s , p a r t i c i p a t i n g Post Offices and online at www. womenshealthdiary. com.au Lisa Wilkinson

LITHGOW WORKIES BOWLING CLUB FOURS CHAMPIONS

The final was played on Saturday 5th December between the teams of Greg Honeysett, Terry McPhail, Tom Staines & Ben Woolard against Fred Foye, Max Tattersall, Gwyn Walding & Col McDonnell.

Story Submitted by Publicity Officer, Lithgow Workies Bowling Club

The game started with both leads, Foye and Honeysett putting their bowls close to the jack, with the seconds, thirds and skips all playing steady bowls. After eight ends the score favored McDonnells team 13 – 5. However, Woolards team was not to be outdone and on the next two ends with their bowls crowding the jack, saw them score two shots and then five valuable shots to draw closer at 13 – 12. The leads and seconds continued to nudge the jack so often, the biggest danger was running out of chalk. From the thirteenth to the seventeenth ends, McDonnells team again gained the upper hand and scored a total of eleven shots on these ends with consistent bowls. This was a bridge too far for Woolards team with McDonnells team running out comfortable winners 27 – 15.
