DOLLS OF THE WORLD ON DISPLAY IN PORTLAND The doll collection of Portland local Kaylin Caddis will be on display at The Foundations this November.

The collection was started by Kaylin's mother, Ruby Beutel, over 70 years ago, and has been added to by Kaylin since she was a young girl. It is the first time in 50 years the collection has been on public display. The Beutel family have a long history in collecting, not only dolls, but other artefacts that formed part of their families museum that was based in Toowoomba in Queensland when Kaylin was growing up. The exhibition has been a long time coming for Kaylin, but after COVID interrupted her travel plans this year, it was an opportune time to get the collection out and do some maintenance, and that led to putting on this exhibition. “There are a number of very rare dolls, and some that date back to the 1880s,” said Mrs Caddis. There are well over 500 dolls on display and even some for sale, so it will be a must for any doll enthusiast. The event is taking place in the Bathhouse at The Foundations in Portland, from 10-2pm every Saturday and Sunday until the 6 December. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Remembrance Day Service

CANCELLED IN LITHGOW “It is with great regret that we have to advise that this year’s Remembrance Day service will NOT be going ahead in Queen Elizabeth Park, Lithgow this year, due to circumstances beyond our control,” Lithgow RSL Secretary Michael Cuthbert said. “We have encountered difficulties that we are unable to compensate for and we acknowledge that there will be disappointment within the Lithgow community, for which we sincerely apologise” Mr Cuthbert said. “Remembrance Day, is a day for reflection of those who have worn the Uniform of Australia’s Defence Force, and who paid the Supreme Sacrifice in the defence of our Country and to remember that on the 11th November 1918 at 11am, the guns fell silent bringing an end to World War One, the most devastating conflict the world had seen up until that time. It was to be ‘the War to end all Wars’, however it was not to be with numerous conflict occurring in subsequent years” “On Remembrance Day, the 11th Day of the 11th Month at the 11th Hour, although there will not be a service occurring here in Lithgow, please take a moment to reflect in your own way about the members of the Australian Defence Force, who have paid the Supreme Sacrifice for us and our way of life, and if you wish to lay a wreath or flowers on Remembrance Day at the Cenotaph, please feel free to do so” Mr Cuthbert said.

HERITAGE RAIL IS BACK ON TRACK Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is urging the local community to visit Oberon this weekend for a chance to take a look back in time to the days of early rail in the district.

Mr Toole said the heritage-listed Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway is holding an open day on Saturday from 10am until 2pm to show off the results of major upgrades as part of a plan to unlock the tourism potential that historic rail offers the region. A NSW Government grant of $133,000 paved the way for the restoration of the 85 metre long platform at the station as well as other improvements which is a vital part of the vision to attract visitors to town. “The station forms part of Oberon’s history and locals and visitors alike are benefitting from this project,” Mr Toole said. “Oberon Railway Station was built between 1921 and 1923 when the Oberon-Tarana branch line was built and opened. “Oberon-Tarana Heritage Railway (OTHR) has been working to restore steam engines and reconstruct rail trucks to run heritage railway trips for the public. “Upgrading and restoring the platform at the station has been a critical part of this project. The platform restoration is part of the infrastructure that includes a working museum

display which explores the five decades the railway operated as part of the lifeblood of the Oberon economy.” President of the OTHR Greg Bourne said everyone is welcome to come and see the progress that is being made at the station, but should also remember to be COVID safe. “The platform’s looking great and now we’ve got the tracks fixed we can actually shift and move around the locos and carriages,” Mr Bourne said. “On Saturday we will have two of our 1897 End Platform cars at the platform and I must say they look pretty good now the exteriors have been given a coat of paint. It was only last month that we were able to move them into place for the first time.” Mr Bourne said there’s also exciting news as they have now been granted a Heritage operator’s licence to travel north to Hazelgrove. “We are working really hard to get that up and running,” he said. Mr Toole said the OTHR estimates the branch line has the potential to attract between 5000 and 8000 visitors of all ages in its first year of operation. “Improving the platform’s alignment will ensure the station’s safety and accessibility for visitors and passengers boarding and alighting from trains into the future,” he said. “It also creates a visually and practical enjoyable visitor experience as they understand how the station ran in its day.”

Issue 335 - 6th November 2020

Letter to the editor Newnes, October 2020

There is a new breeze blowing down Mort Street.

The report of the Transition Working Group - A Case for Economic Change which has been released recently is the best thing that’s happened in Lithgow for a long time. Thank you and congratulations to the volunteers and Council staff who were involved in the report of the Transition Working Group. Already LCC is inviting to a workshop on 12th November to discuss the findings of the report and hopefully lots will come out of that. I would like to publish my views of the report in the hope that this will have a constructive effect. The outstanding feature of the report is the acknowledgement (on page 43) of the fact that coal and coal fired electricity generation in Lithgow will be over by 2045 with the closure of Mt Piper Power Station. This represents a major shift from the past when the possibility of transition was responded to by saying “Lithgow was always a coal mining town and always will be”. It won’t and the sooner Lithgow embraces other avenues for development the better. The report puts great emphasis on the thought that Lithgow should be “Having Lithgow and Blue Mountains Regions come together and joining forces with Western Sydney Councils in a widely coordinated marketing effort” (59). I believe Lithgow has its unique brand and it is not compatible with a Western Sydney Council. They are worlds apart. Marketing in general always works for the marketing consultant and the advertising agency behind him/her but the effectiveness of the campaign remains unproven. LCC's Senior Economic Development and Destination Manage advertised a “Google approved” consultant to help local businesses overcome the COVID19 downturn. Outsourcing the marketing is the easy way out for the administrator who just has to send the cheque - - “oh yes, we’ve done that”. Marketing for tourism in the age of social media is superfluous as the happy visitor does the marketing for you through their various platforms, very effectively and totally free. Social media is equally effective with negative messages. Images of rubbish strewn all over the Newnes Plateau, stories of impassable access roads at The Drift or dirty toilets in the National Parks make a feast for the ‘spreaders of negativity’. If we can offer a good product the consumer will do all the advertising themselves, so any marketing effort and big talk fest should be replaced with efforts to actually improve the product. So we should start improving the wonderful assets we have around us (in many cases it doesn’t take that much)

The Bay Tree Nursery Specialising in the more unusual Cool Climate Trees, Shrubs and Perennials.

make them accessible and likeable and the guests will do all the marketing. I believe that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) or ‘Green Coal’ for Hydrogen production (page 46) is a much flagged Morrison government pipe dream. Pilot plants with CCS consume 30% of the energy used by the plant. Also, I share the concerns over the safety of storing captured CO2 due to the possibility of leakages and environmental contamination. Much better not to produce CO2 in the first place rather than catching, and storing it for future generations to deal with. For Pumped Hydro (47) Lithgow already has existing infrastructure between the three water storage lakes: Thompsons Creek Dam (elevat. 1033) Lake Wallace (872) and Lake Lyall (789). These are linked with a 500mm (?) pipe and 244 meters of ‘head’ – that’s a lot of energy. Agribusiness (48) is important and should be prioritized because it provides labour jobs. I welcome the attention Tourism (60) gets in the report and the marketing of the natural beauty we are so lucky to call our own. Newnes is absolutely booming – there are 6 million people on the other side of the mountains and with travel restrictions they seem to all be coming over here. The Capertee Valley is not a “canyon” (60). This term was invented by an ill-advised marketing campaign which called it the “biggest canyon in the world” – a contradiction in terms as canyons are usually narrow dark slots defined by its depth being usually greater than its width. The report mentions Emirates One and Only Wolgan Resort as one of Lithgow’s major attractions. The report’s emphasis on the “high end luxury market” (61) will not result in bigger visitor numbers. The “high end” visitor stays in one place and does not spread his/her expenses over the wider Lithgow economy. The report’s suggestion of “Making the Gardens of Stone initiative a reality” (60) is one fundamental shift from the past which fills me with joy and hope. Having been refused support by LCC since the start of this campaign some ten years ago The Destination Pagoda proposal forms a shovel ready project which represents a chance to convert the large depleted State Forest area into a world class tourism destination. The recently released economic report states that Destination Pagoda will require an investment of $40mio over ten years when it will generate $24 million per year and create 258 full time jobs. This is a ‘no brainer’ and the past refusal to support this proposal is incomprehendible. Rather than planning a new convention centre (66) we should use existing buildings and convert or upgrade them. An upgraded State Mine Heritage Park could become a Lithgow unique venue, Foundations at Portland offer plenty of space and the former TAFE building in the heart of town

should not be a derelict real estate ‘chip’. We also have the ‘white elephant’ of UWS sitting idle. I would like to see emphasis on the unique brand of Lithgow with its history, its culture and its ‘oldie style’ architecture. That is our brand and no marketing consultant should replace this with some ‘out of this world’ (heartless) monstrosity. Repurposing Hoskins building (71) for start-ups is only one use for this magnificent facility. All sorts of educational workshops and training activities (eg. retraining of miners) could be located there Water (87) will become an ever more valuable asset. Lithgow is very fortunate with its water resources. It is with most urgency that LCC should actively prevent the planned pipeline to take water from Mt Piper to McPhilamys Gold Mine in Blayney. This water is Lithgow’s water. It does not belong to Centennial, it should not be traded on to Energy Australia and it should not be traded on to the gold mine. The legality of this process is highly questionable and I call it a local travesty. I certainly believe that Lithgow should progress on its own, Option 1 (89) under the Regional City Deals Overall, I don’t support the emphasis of the report for collaboration with Western Sydney. Western Sydney is so different from Lithgow. I believe that Lithgow should focus on its unique character and location. The report has identified plenty of projects here and those can be much more effectively dealt with locally. I can’t see the benefit of regional collaborations in the past: • LCC’s membership of CENTROC has led to very little, if any, measurable benefit for the town. The involvement with CENTROC has seen several expensive workshops, strategy meetings and scoping papers and lots of “strategizing about the future” (96) but very little on Main Street. • Similarly LCC’s membership to Blue Mountains Tourism at $50k pa. has done nothing for Lithgow other than the reassurance of the administrator or Councillor that “yes, we’ve done something for tourism”. I believe these larger organisations are very ineffective and a waste of resources. They become too big and fail to address individual circumstances. However, they might give more weight when applying for funding. There are so many projects in our LGA. At the same time there is a lot of money being offered by both federal and state governments. We don’t need large regional collaborations. To get the “rubber hitting the road” (96) I recommend the setting up of a group of the more dedicated LCC staff in a special project focussed ‘Get It Done’ Group. Thank you again for all the work the volunteers have put into this. Let’s just do it.

AUSTRALIAN LOCAL GOVT WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION NSW MEETS IN SUNNY GUNNY POSTPANDEMIC Gunnedah, with its rich agricultural vistas and breath-taking landscapes, the proud home to a significant population of one of Australia’s iconsthe koala, welcomed Lithgow City Councillor Cassandra Coleman, NSW State President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA NSW) and the ALGWA NSW Executive on the weekend.

“ALGWA NSW Country Vice -President and wellknown Gunnedah Shire Councillor Colleen Fuller gave the Executive a taste of what it is like to live in a welcoming community with a diverse economy which creates lifestyle opportunities,” said Councillor Coleman. “We are truly thankful to Gunnedah Shire Council which kindly offered to host our first post Covid19 meeting.” The Mayor of Gunnedah Shire Cr. Jamie Chaffey was on hand not only to welcome the Executive, but to take time to address the board and give an insight on the current focus of the Council. Gunnedah Shire Council, with the support of both the State and Federal governments, invested $3.2 million into a community resilience project to support business during the drought.

RIDING THE WAVE OF FACEBOOK! Better Business Column | By Steve Semmens, The Persuader

As part of a social media marketing strategy, most businesses would benefit from using Facebook and though it was a platform that was primarily used for business to consumers, B2C, it is now rapidly growing as an excellent platform for business to business, B2B, especially in regional areas.

So what is social media marketing? “Social media marketing is the use of social media platforms to connect with your audience to build your brand, increase sales, and drive website traffic. This involves publishing great content on your social media profiles, listening to and engaging your followers, analyzing your results, and running social media advertisements. The major social media platforms (at the moment) are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snapchat.” - Source: Buffer.com

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY AT GLANMIRE Work will start this week on the Great Western Highway at Glanmire, east of Bathurst, to widen the road and install a number of specific safety treatments to help better protect all road users.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government has provided $3.5 million under the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative to widen a 2.2 kilometre section of road and install barriers on the centreline and on the roadside. “Road shoulders will be widened, a wide centre line installed, and rumble strips added along the centre and edge line,” Mr Toole said. “The safety upgrade project was selected after a crash cluster was identified along this section of road. “Between July 2011 and July last year, there were 13 crashes along this section of the Great Western Highway, resulting in six fatalities and 25 injuries.

“Of those, seven involved vehicles crossing the centre line of which three resulted in head on collisions. Three more crashes involved vehicles running off the side of the road. “The new safety treatments will reduce the severity of these crash types in the future.” Work will start on Thursday 5 November and be carried out Monday to Saturday from 7am and 6pm, weather permitting. It is expected to be completed by May next year. Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work hours, including single lane closures closest to where the work is being carried out. Motorists should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of signs and traffic control. A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists. Transport for NSW thanks the community and motorists for their patience while work is carried out. For the latest traffic updates call 132 701, visit livetraffic. com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.

Why Facebook for business?

Facebook is a free platform that can reach over 3 billion people per month globally. In Australia, just in the past few months since Covid-19 hit, monthly unique visitors increased from 16 million to 18 million, ( Source: Jane Murray, klyp.co). It is a low cost marketing strategy, should you decide to boost posts or advertise on Facebook. You can specifically target your audience and then through Facebook Insights see and measure the results. If the advert is not working you can quickly change it. Facebook can drive traffic to your website and online shop and it makes it easy to engage and talk with clients all around the world. Facebook for business has a myriad of extras that can really help you create brand awareness to your followers and potential clients. Such things as Groups, Job Adverts, Messenger, Chatbots, Face Time, Facebook Live, and more recently, the Facebook Business Suite. The possibilities are endless in relation to how you can now interact with current and potential clients in realtime and never before has there been such a level playing field in relation to competing against larger companies than now. Video is king and the engagement with Facebook Live is 178% higher than the average post engagement. That is phenomenal and makes it well worthwhile for business owners to invest in creating their own videos on a regular basis. Remember that the video content should be related to your business but it doesn’t hurt to throw in a cat video or similar occasionally, and see what results you get. It can take up to 25 engagements before a customer decides to buy, so posting consistently is important. The organic reach of a post is now less than 5% so consider boosting your posts and see the difference in results. If you get above 1% engagement it is considered a good post but I prefer to aim for at least 5%. Some excellent Facebook pages you can review to perhaps get some ideas from are Macquarie Medi Spa, Gang Gang Gallery, and Gazza’s Takeaway. On the flipside, Facebook does have its challenges such as changing their algorithms and security settings regularly, and on occasions making arbitrary decisions on a particular page with little or no recourse for the owner. However, their recently released Business Suite should help with these issues and you can engage a local Social Media Consultant to look after this critical side of the business for you. “Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers, and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individuals core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them."

CSU is the only university to promise to provide an audit report to the Australian Government and not deliver it.

√ $250,000 for Lithgow City Council to spend on bushfire recovery projects √ $796,000 to complete the sealing of Glen Davis Rd √ $4320 for the Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre

If the independent regulator finds a clean bill of health – there won’t be anyone happier than me.

There was a very positive development in Senate Estimates last week, with news the independent, university regulator, Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), is undertaking an investigation of CSU.

√ $1,363,500 for the Fixing Local Roads Program

If however, TEQSA finds that there are issues that need to be addressed then the community will expect this to occur.

I’m also pleased to hear TEQSA will be requesting a copy of the KPMG audit report as part of its investigation. I have faith in TEQSA and look forward to them doing their work,

√ $47,000 for Lithgow Halloween √ $796,800 under the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program

It is critical that we have a country university sector that can continue to deliver for our communities and educate our country workforce now and into the future. I am a champion of CSU and all regional universities, and I want to see a strong and successful university in our community.

RACING RETURNS TO LITHGOW! After a 20-month break, racing is back at Lithgow! The track’s come up a treat and although I didn’t have any luck on the punt, it was great to attend the re-opening of the track on the weekend. I was also lucky enough to meet the legend of Australian greyhound race-

calling, Paul Ambrosoli! Well done Rod Bragg and the team at Lithgow Greyhound Racing Club. It’s great to see racing back and the crowds rolling in to support it. Thanks also to everyone who’s helped get badly needed work at the track completed in time for Saturday’s races.

√ MRI Licence for Lithgow Hospital √ $7,600 for restoration of the Tarana Village Recreation Reserve √ $6,375 for the Portland District Motor Club

THE LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY IN DARGAN I paid a visit to Dargan this week. It was good to check-in with residents and members of the local RFS. It is clear the road to recovery from the devastating summer bushfires is going to be a long one. The Dargan community is a strong and resilient one that has literally been through hell. The Gospers Mountain fire tore through the village just days before Christmas, destroying 16 homes and many sheds and other structures. Almost 12 months on from the fires and there is some regrowth starting to show, but there is still a lot of recovery work to be done. Rebuilding is underway but nobody should be under any doubt about what a long hard road this is, or the toll these bushfires have taken.

√ $64.3 million for the Forty Bends road upgrade

APPLY NOW FOR BUSHFIRE RECOVERY GRANTS! $250 million in bushfire recovery grants are now available!

Applications for the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, co-funded by the NSW and Australian governments are now open, and will fund infrastructure and environmental projects, and social, business and environmental education initiatives. Grants of $200,000 to $20 million will be available to organisations such as councils, businesses, joint organisations, business chambers, charities, local Aboriginal Land Councils and state government agencies. I encourage eligible, local organisations to apply! Applications close 11 December 2020.

Today, Federal Member for Calare, and Minister

CSU then wrote back to me declining to provide a copy of the report.  â€œOur communities are entitled to transparency, particularly when the Australian Government is providing an $18 billion funding guarantee to universities to support them through the COVID-19 pandemic, and an additional $400 million for the country university sector under the Jobs-ready Graduates Package.  â€œI am now awaiting the conclusion of TEQSA’s work and like everyone I want to see an outcome that allows CSU to grow and succeed. “If the independent regulator finds a clean bill of health – there won’t be anyone happier than me. MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING RATINGS BOOST RIDER SAFETY

Riders are being reminded to check the safety rating of their motorcycle gear when the latest Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP) results are released as part of Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said riders were the most vulnerable road users, so choosing the most protective safety gear could be a life-saver. “More than 300 riders were killed on NSW roads over the past five years, and more than 12,400 were admitted to hospital with serious injuries,” Mr Toole said. “Testing and improving the effectiveness of protective motorcycle clothing helps to reduce the risk of serious injury for riders, so we’re reminding riders to check out the latest results to help keep them safe.” MotoCAP provides two separate star ratings for motorcycle clothing - one for protection and one for breathability. Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary for Safety,

Environment and Regulation Tara McCarthy said the latest results show the protection rating for motorcycle jackets and pants has been steadily improving. “Gear that would score six out of 10 for impact protection was considered a good standard for jackets and pants a year ago, but now several items are rating nine or 10 out of 10 in this category,” Ms McCarthy said. MotoCAP was developed by a team of road safety partners led by Transport for NSW. Since it launched in September 2018, MotoCAP has rated 64 pairs of pants, 125 jackets and 77 pairs of gloves. In November 2019, MotoCAP was awarded the prestigious Road Safety Award at the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) awards in Monaco.

PREPARE NOW TO PREVENT GRASS FIRES THIS SUMMER

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is warning of an increased risk of grass fires this season, due to recent rain and vegetation growth.

LITHGOW REMEMBERS Lithgow Tidy Towns has once again installed a respectful display in Gallery Lane acknowledging the commitment and sacrifice of our Australian service men and women in World War 1 and subsequent international conflicts.

Their sacrifice is recorded by the Australian War Memorial as 102,888 Australians who have died as a result of military service with the largest number of deaths occurring in World War 1 (61,596) and World War 2 (39,655). The soldier and nurse silhouettes and the large map of Australia were all cut out by the Lithgow Men’s Shed. Long serving Lithgow Tidy Towns member, George Quinell, has done all the artwork and has also written a poem of remembrance. There was an enthusiastic Tidy Towns crew on hand to set up the display, which will remain in the laneway until 13th November.

“While the rain has been welcome, it’s also brought an unwelcome threat of grass fires across the Chifley / Lithgow Team area,” Inspector Mick Holland said. “We have had above average rainfall during the past six months which is fantastic for farmers but it has also caused a significant increase in vegetation growth like crops and grass. Now is the time to prepare your property to reduce the risk before it is too late.” “Grass fires can be especially dangerous because they start quickly and spread rapidly, destroying not only homes, stocks and crops, but also lives and livelihoods.” Inspector Holland said there are steps people can take now to prepare for the increased risk. “Firebreaks can help slow a fire’s spread and landholders should put firebreaks around paddocks, buildings or other valuable assets to help stop a fire or prevent it from reaching or leaving your property. The NSW RFS also advises landholders to check that your farm equipment is in good repair and ready to deal with a fire should one occur. Also to be aware that when blades of slashers, mowers and similar equipment hit rocks or metal, sparks can ignite dry grass. “We don’t want people to be unnecessarily alarmed by the grass fire threat however we do want them to be prepared – and discussing with your family what you would do if a fire started near you can help prevent the fire from impacting you.” “We’re also advising motorists to avoid driving through or stopping in long grass, even if it’s just for a few minutes, as the heat from a car’s exhaust can be enough to start a fire. “It is important that everyone understands the risks of grass fires across the Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon areas and prepares for it, whether you’re on the land, in town or just travelling through.” “Every resident should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan so they know what to do on days of increased fire danger and can immediately put their plan into action if their home is threatened by fire.” For further information on how you can protect your property, or to download a Bush Fire Survival Plan, visit the NSW RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737). For information on current fires, download the NSW RFS Fires Near Me app to your phone or tablet.

The recent film “EMMA” is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1819 novel. It’s a story about a self-willed, headstrong and high-spirited young lady who overestimates her matching- making abilities as she meddles in the romantic lives of those around her.

ROCKLEY GARDENS AND ART FESTIVAL IS GOING VIRTUAL THIS YEAR The Rockley Gardens and Art Festival 2020 has been cancelled this year due to COVID 19. However, the good news is you can walk through the gardens on a virtual tour via the website: rockleygardensandart.weebly.com or go to the Rockley Gardens and Art Facebook and Instagram sites for the link.

The virtual tour goes live on Saturday the 7th November 2020. The tour will include established gardens, works in progress as well as historical properties and their gardens. The Bunnamagoo Estate and winery, one of the earliest homesteads built west of the Blue Mountains in 1827 will be showing their garden. Bunnamagoo Reserve vintage wines are designated “1827” to commemorate their beginning. This private garden offers a glimpse into Australian pioneering history and a chance to see the enchanted garden rooms displaying an English cottage garden design. An exhibition of the artworks of Rockley’s many artists will be part of the tour. This includes traditional landscapes, glass art, drawings from life, and artworks of a more contemporary style for you to enjoy on the website. Thanks to everyone for their support this year. The participants look forward to meeting you at our actual festival next year. For more information contact Dr Kerry Mahony, Chairperson of the Organising Committee on 0434179401 or e-mail her on mahonykerry4@gmail.com

Relax, Revitalise and Rejuvenate with Central West Women’s Health Centre Relaxation, revitalisation and rejuvenation are the themes at Central West Women’s Health Centre (CWWHC) as we move into the warmer months, with a range of activities and services on offer to improve a sense of wellbeing and connection for women in the area. A new Generalist Counsellor, Lorraine Murphy, has been welcomed to the CWWHC team this week. Lorraine brings a wealth of experience and a long history in supporting women to this important role. Women throughout the Central West are encouraged to support the Centre and become an Association Member in preparation for the Annual General Meeting, to be held 25 November 2020 via Zoom at 5:30pm. The support of women from all backgrounds is welcomed. “We plan to establish a volunteer fund raising committee next year,” says Centre Manager, Karen Boyde. “This will be a great opportunity for women in the community to support the Centre and help make a difference for all women and girls in the local area.” And after many months of isolation and online interaction, the Centre is hoping to make a difference for local women by beginning to move back to face-to-face health promotion events and activities while working within a Covid-safe framework. Women Who Walk, the weekly walking group is back in full force commencing Monday 9 November 2020 at 9:00am. The benefits of walking include improved health, such as improvements in blood pressure, resting heart rate, total cholesterol, body weight, body fat, physical functioning, and reduced risk of depression. The Women Who Walk group incorporates an added social aspect to the exercise which can boost the overall positive effects. Yoga is also on offer this term. Taught by Susan Douglas, a fabulous Instructor who facilitates Hatha yoga for beginners to intermediate, yoga can help to improve strength, flexibility, breathing and encourage meditation and relaxation. It’s not too late to register for Term 4. Sessions are held weekly on Wednesday 10:30am – 11:30am for concession card holders, and Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30pm – 6:30pm at $150 for the Term or $18 per session. Registration is required for all activities. For further details on CWWHC and how you can be involved or to register for an activity contact Centre Manager, Karen Boyde on 02 6331 4133.

TARANA FARMERS’ MARKET

(Covid-Safe) 4th Sunday of every month Music - Local Produce - Arts & Crafts Support your local farmers! 9 am - 1 pm

SHOWTIME IS SET TO MAKE A RETURN IN 2021 Showtime is set to make a return in early 2021 with the NSW Government today announcing COVID safe guidelines that will allow locals and visitors to once again attend country shows.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said local shows have a proud local tradition that the community looks forward to every year and the green light to bring this cherished event back is great news. “Much of our region is in drought recovery for the first time in years so by holding the show once again our farmers will have the opportunity to showcase everything from the amazing food and produce they grow to their prize winning bulls or family jam recipes,” Mr Toole said. “The show is one of the most important social events on our calendar and draws crowds from across the region, giving local businesses exposure and keeping money flowing through our towns - and I have no doubt it will give our regions a much needed boost. “The NSW Government will be working closely with organisers and industry associations to ensure COVID safe measures are in place for each show.” Deputy Premier John Barilaro said shows can go ahead

from January 2021 with up to 5,000 people able to attend at any given time. “Country shows are the beating heart of regional communities and visiting a show is one of the highlights of living in the bush. Shows boost business and community spirit and it is important that people can enjoy these events safely and responsibly,” Mr Barilaro said. “We’ve done the hard work and deserve to enjoy ourselves, however I must stress that it will be essential for both organisers, and attendees to follow guidelines as the last thing we want is outbreaks in regional towns.” Organisers will have to complete a COVIDSafe Event Plan, and ensure social distancing at venues, controlled access at entry points to minimise crowding and a limit to the number of attendees depending on venue size with one person per 4 square metres. Organisers are encouraged to use the Service NSW COVIDSafe QR codes to enable safe management of crowd numbers and contact tracing. The NSW Government is working with the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW to explore options for the 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show. Guidelines and checklists for country shows will be availble online at www.nsw.gov.au/COVID-19 Pictured: Member for Bathurst Paul Toole with daughter Scout. Showtime in country areas across NSW are set to make a return with COVID safe guidelines that will allow locals and visitors to once again attend the big event.

COMMUNITY GATHER TO OPPOSE GOKART TRACK LOCATION By Rich Evans. Photo by Margaret Hogan.

The community of Bathurst gathered in large numbers last Thursday in an effort to sway the votes of Bathurst Regional Councillors on the issue of the Go-Kart track currently planned to be constructed in McPhillamy Park. The Friends of McPhillamy Park Committee has been established to coordinate efforts and attempt to save McPhillamy Park for everyone. "We are still encouraging Council to find an alternative site so that kart enthusiasts can have their go-kart track and McPhillamy Park can be preserved for the whole community. That means respecting the wishes of the Wiradjuri Elders, and retaining the views and open space for future generations," said the group in a recent press release. This is clearly now an issue that the Bathurst community feel very strongly about with a large turnout for the protest and a petition with over 2000 signatures on hand. "The rally in front of council chambers last Thursday when the rescission motion was “debated”, and predictably lost, just proved the level of concern within the community. Thank you to all those who attended," said the group.

An information day will be held this Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at Tremain’s Mill in Keppel Street. Everyone is welcome to come along and exchange views, meet the committee, sign the petition and find out more about the campaign. TASTY TUSCAN MEATBALLS THIS EASY, low-cost Tuscan meatballs recipe packs a punch by combining a winning combination of the flavours of Italy.

TAFE NSW Tourism and Hospitality Teacher Robyn Ward said adding flavour to the mince with onion, bacon, cheese and herbs takes a simple meatball to a whole other level. “It’s a perfect hearty midweek meal. Why not double the meatball recipe and use for lunches or freeze half for later. “Anyone can learn how to add more ideas to their meal plan at TAFE NSW. We’ll teach you the skills you need to prepare meals for all occasions!”

Tuscan meatballs Ingredients • 500gm lean beef mince • 2 rashers bacon, finely diced • 1 medium onion, grated • 3 tbsp grated parmesan cheese • 2 tbsp chopped parsley • 2 tsp chopped thyme • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp ground black pepper • 4 slices stale bread • ¼ cup milk • 250gm ricotta cheese • 3 eggs lightly beaten • 1 jar tomato and basil pasta sauce • 1 packet dried spaghetti

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees and line a baking dish with baking paper. 2. Blitz bread slices in food processor to make crumbs, then add the milk and pulse to combine. 3. Combine mince, bacon, onion, cheese, parsley, thyme, eggs, salt

and pepper in a bowl with the breadcrumbs. The mixture will be light, soft and moist. Using wet hands, form the mixture into balls (golf ball size) and place on lined baking dish and cook in the oven until browned and cook for 20 minutes or until cooked through.

4. Boil a large pot of water and cook spaghetti. 5. Heat bottled tomato sauce and add cooked meatballs, simmer for 20 minutes. Spoon over cooked spaghetti and serve with grated parmesan cheese.

Are you feeding your Pet Junk Food? There are a lot of options on the supermarket shelf when it comes to feeding our pets.

But is it junk food…? As we should do for ourselves when making better food choices, selecting from around the perimeter of the shop is best. This is where everything is either fresh or refrigerated. Feeding your cat or dog out of a can is ok every now & then but would you solely feed yourself a canned diet? Dogs & cats are mainly meat-eating creatures so what exactly is added to the food to preserve it in a can & make it palatable? Dogs & cats are in fact omnivores, meaning they survive on meat & plant-based foods. So, is a simple ‘meat & 3 veg’ diet so far-fetched for our furry friends? For dogs: Good, RAW meat & offal (red & white) that includes some fat, bones & marrow, in addition to raw vegetables & even bits of fruit, is ideal. Add a raw egg every now & again for skin & coat health. Cats: probably a little bit more fussy because, well they’re cats…but a diet along the same lines is key for optimal health (fine or ground, raw bones only). There are some fancy, pre-mixed & specific

22

dietary food options available from pet stores & vets these days. This is convenient, but it hits the back pocket hard. If you have been advised to feed your pet specific to a diagnosis, please adhere to that expert advice. However, for health, wellbeing & longevity it is in fact achievable to feed your best mates well & on a budget. The options of buying bulk, pet grade meats will save you where it counts. Let’s compare for arguments sake - wet food for an adult, large breed dog - for one week. A My Dog 680g can per day -at current price of $3.40 per can. One week’s worth of cans (7) = $23.80 a week Quality beef & chicken mince mix from your local pet food supplier is $3.60 per kilo – one week’s worth, feeding approximately 700g per day is $18. That’s a $300 a year saving! Food for thought…?

MORE CASH TO FIX LOCAL ROADS, BOOSTS JOBS IN REGIONS The Australian and New South Wales Governments’ have concreted our commitment to improving local roads and create thousands of local jobs in the regions, with Round 2 of the accelerated Fixing Local Roads program opening this week. This is money for small projects that make a big difference in people’s everyday lives right across regional New South Wales. It will mean smoother, safer trips to school, work or even the shops and most importantly, it will create much-needed jobs in hundreds of communities. The program marks a major investment in the roads that regional communities use every day. We know how much better roads mean in the bush – and projects like these will be key to helping regional communities recover from the impact of bushfires, drought and the COVID-19 pandemic. Communities are already starting to see projects from Round 1 commence around the state, and they can expect to see even more in the coming months as we continue to turbocharge this initiative. Updated guidelines and a factsheet for Round 2 of Fixing Local Roads can be found here www.rms.nsw.gov.au/fixinglocalroads

NEW RESOURCES HELP KIDS TRANSITION TO SCHOOL

Dolls of the

As children around NSW begin preparing for their transition to school, the NSW Government has developed new resources to support early childhood educators as they guide children in care services through this critical phase of their learning. The Government is committed to ensuring that all children across the state get the best start they can, especially given this year’s challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic. Resourcing educators to help them get little ones through this transition phase is part of our overall commitment to supporting early childhood education and building the best and highest quality early childhood education sector in Australia. These new resources include practical tools that educators can use in their services to help children get ready for school next year. Research shows that a smooth transition to school sets children up for long term success, which is why the NSW Government is assisting during this important phase. The resources include a Transition to School Guide for Early Childhood Education that was developed in collaboration with early childhood teachers, primary school principals and kindergarten teachers. It assists early childhood educators to deliver educational programs that develop the skills and attributes children need for a successful start to school. The resources will be available on the NSW Education Department’s website and will also be provided to all long day care and community and mobile preschools across NSW.
