BUSHFIRE CLEAN-UP HITS KEY MILESTONE AS FINAL PROPERTIES CLEARED IN LITHGOW A significant milestone has been reached by the NSW Government’s statewide bushfire clean-up program with all eligible properties having now been cleared in the Lithgow region. Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the achievement showcases the immense progress of recovery efforts throughout the State. “We met the initial target of 2,800 properties cleared across the State in June and today I’m proud to announce we have also completed the clean-up of the additional properties that were identified,” Mr Toole said. “The mammoth job undertaken by Laing O’Rourke clean-up crews has given local communities the chance to start again after the horrific recent bushfires that took so much from so many. “Every single one of the properties cleared represents another individual or family who can look to the future with hope and start to rebuild.” Mr Toole said special recognition to Laing O’Rourke is well deserved for pushing on in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic to get the job done and for understanding the

importance of supporting local jobs in these difficult times by awarding 99 per cent of their contracts to local and regional subcontractors, creating 1000 jobs across the State. GREENSPOT TO CREATE NEW INDUSTRIAL KPMG REVIEW SHEDS LIGHT ON CHARLES PARK ON OLD POWER STATION SITE EnergyAustralia’s former Wallerawang power station in Lithgow, New South Wales, is set to undergo a transformation with new owners, Greenspot Wallerawang Pty Ltd, planning to turn the site into an industrial park. Greenspot is a joint venture between the owners of leading NSW businesses, Borg and Bettergrow. Liz Westcott, EnergyAustralia Executive – Energy said: “Since the Wallerawang plant closed in 2014 our team has been carefully rehabilitating the site in preparation for a new owner. We are pleased to announce that Greenspot has purchased the site and will continue a proud 60-year history within the community. “We look forward to Greenspot realising their vision for an industrial park, and with it, the creation of jobs, new business opportunities and a welcome boost to the local economy,” Ms Westcott said. Head of Mt Piper Greg McIntyre said: “Many locals had – and still have – a strong connection to the plant with their relatives or friends having worked there at some point. We hope they are pleased with today’s news that sets up the site for future generations. “We thank members of the Lithgow community for their patience throughout the repurposing program. In addition, we thank Lithgow City Council and The Hon. Paul Toole for their continued support.” Bettergrow managing director Neil Schembri said that resilience, environmental biodiversity and a rich cultural heritage are the perfect ingredients for new enterprise in regional areas. “Wallerawang and Lithgow has all of that in spades,” he said. “Our aim is to deliver an industrial park that will stimulate the local economy, encourage new industry and drive investment in the Lithgow region. I would like to thank the Wallerawang and Lithgow community for their support of this project, and we look forward to continue working closely with them in this next phase of development.” Mr Schembri said Greenspot first intends to undertake

a significant program of decommissioning, demolition and rehabilitation works, which is expected to commence in the first half of next year. This program will take approximately two-and-a-half years and require around 60 workers during peak activity. Beyond that, Greenspot aims to leverage the collective experience of Borg and Bettergrow to generate activity on site, and to work with key public and private sector stakeholders to attract and accommodate a variety of businesses that will co-exist on the site. Greenspot will also work collaboratively with state government owned Generator Property Management Pty Ltd, which has taken over ownership and the responsibility to rehabilitate the power station’s ash dams, located The Wallerawang site including buffer lands covers around 450 hectares and offers a rail siding and high-voltage electricity connection. EnergyAustralia closed the plant in 2014 to focus fuel and resources to the newer and more efficient Mt Piper station.

STURT’S FUTURE

The release of the much-anticipated independent review by KPMG on the financial position of Charles Sturt University has been welcomed by Member for Bathurst Paul Toole. Mr Toole said he was satisfied Charles Sturt was heading in the right direction and now getting back on track to financial stability after he questioned its operations earlier this year. This included an ultimatum that the Bathurst campus would not be downgraded and assurances that marquee courses such as nursing, paramedics, engineering, teaching and journalism would be retained. Mr Toole also asked for guarantees that the ViceChancellor’s position would continue to be based in Bathurst. “The report by KPMG maps out the path under the University’s ‘Sustainable Futures’ program to return to a balanced budget by the end of the 2021 financial year,” Mr Toole said. “This is another important step forward for Charles Sturt. Assurances have been given that these highprofile courses will remain in Bathurst, as will the ViceChancellor’s position.” Mr Toole said alarm bells started ringing when predictions that COVID-19 could lead to a decline in revenue of $80 million for Charles Sturt with major ramifications for the running of the Bathurst campus. “The KPMG review has now confirmed a lower forecast deficit in the current financial year and an expected balanced budget by the end of the 2021 financial year,” he said. Mr Toole said the release of the KPMG review of Charles Sturt gives certainty to the direction it is taking to tackle the impact of the pandemic and is important in maintaining transparency. “It confirms Charles Sturt will be here for the long term, but I’ll certainly be keeping them to account regarding assurances given to the marquee courses being retained in Bathurst, along with the Vice-Chancellor’s position and bouncing back to a sustainable financial position,” he said.

THE FOUNDATIONS OPEN THIS OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND

This October, The Foundations in Portland NSW is opening the gates and giving people a small taste of what is to come over the next few years. Since reopening the site in 2018, popular events such as the night markets and several world class night time functions have seen the site develop a reputation as an art and cultural hub in the small town of Portland. However with the onset of COVID in March this year, all plans were put on hold. The much loved markets have been sorely missed by locals that used to live the day out and also the vendors, something that is hoped to be able to be remedied in the not too distant future. Whilst the regular event schedule has been put on hold, many other initiatives have been driving forward at The Foundations. There has been significant building and planning works

Trashed is created from cans, plastic and glass bottles thrown out on the side of The Bells Line of Road in a 30 kilometre distance from Mt Tomah a to Browns Swamp at Lithgow. NSW. The material was collected after the fires and is a stark and poignant reminder of our lingering impact on the environment. in all weather conditions. “It is clear that Lithgow has the privilege of an Aquatic Centre which is a subject of desire across the state,” noted Mayor Thompson. “It was with great pleasure that Lithgow was

able to assist Richmond Valley Council in the development of their own state-of-the-art facilities for the benefit of their constituents and visitors. I wish them the very best in the delivery of this project.”

On the morning of the 17 September 2020, Lithgow City Council was host to Mayor Robert Mustow and the senior management team of Richmond Valley Council, presenting on the innovative and efficient design of the J M Robson Aquatic Centre. “Even in the initial stages of its refurbishment, Lithgow Council was aware of the need for year round access to aquatic facilities, in order to facilitate improvements in outcomes in the areas of health, education, social inclusion, economic stimulus and stability,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Cr. Ray Thompson. “It is Council’s objective to provide facilities that meets the needs of local people across all sectors and demographics, including people with disabilities, our indigenous community and youth.” However, alongside these social benefits, the J M Robson Aquatic Centre is a regional showcase of efficient design, which aims to minimize operational costs while still providing an exceptional service to the community. Innovative building design improves air circulation within the pool hall, and alongside radiant floor heating and substantial insulation of exterior walls, dramatically reduces heating and cooling costs

BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD - COMMENCEMENT

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has declared that the start of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) will commence on Thursday 1 October 2020 for the following local government areas: • Bathurst Regional Council • Lithgow City Council • Oberon Council NSW RFS is reminding residents that fire permits are required during the Bush Fire Danger Period. “From the 1st October until the end of the Bush Fire Danger Period, people wishing to light a fire in the open will require a permit, which are free and can be obtained from your local fire station or Fire Control Centre. Please request your fire permit several days before you plan to light the fire to allow time for the area to be inspected and the permit to be issued,” Inspector Mick Holland said. “Many land owners have taken advantage of the conditions during winter to prepare their properties and undertake safe burning activities. As the grass will begin to grow and cure as the weather warms up, the risk of grass fires will increase.” Inspector Holland said. “When conditions are particularly bad, such as on days of Very High, Severe, Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger, the NSW RFS may declare a Total Fire Ban, prohibiting the lighting of any fire in the open, even if you have a fire permit.” On a day of Total Fire Ban the lighting of fires is

prohibited. This includes cooking fires using incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, such as wood or charcoal. Gas or electric barbecues are permitted under the following conditions: -They are on residential property within 20 metres of the house or dwelling -They are in a designated picnic area and the appliance is approved by Council, National Parks and Wildlife Services or State Forest - They are under the direct control of a responsible adult - The ground around a barbecue is cleared for 2 metres of all material which could burn - You have an immediate and continuous supply of water available. “We urge all residents in the Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon area to be vigilant and extremely careful with fire during the Bush Fire Danger Period,” Inspector Holland said. “Never leave a fire unattended and if a fire does escape, it is essential to call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond accordingly and minimise the damage.” “Every resident should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan so they know what to do on days of increased fire danger and can immediately put their plan into action if their home is threatened by fire.” For further information on how you can protect your property, or to download a Bush Fire Survival Plan, visit the NSW RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737).

news MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

Issue 329 - 25th September 2020

Rural workplaces and individuals can now access short interactive training courses on mental health and wellbeing online through the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP).

Now, more than ever, our rural communities need to check in with each other and be able to identify when someone is struggling with their mental health and know where and when to get help. RAMHP Program Manager Tessa Caton said similar to many organisations, the RAMHP program has had to adapt to a changing environment. “We want our communities to continue to be equipped with the right knowledge, skills and understanding to help each other and themselves when it comes to our mental health and wellbeing. “If someone is showing signs of a mental health problem, it is important that people understand how to talk to them and take action. By providing some of our training sessions online we can enhance our reach and ensure even more people are getting the help they need when they need it,” she said. Daryl Pickering, Director of Pickering Transport Group recently completed RAMHP’s Workplace Support Skills training course online and said the course helped provide managers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to look out for their fellow workers and wider community. “The feedback received was really positive and everyone felt the course was worthwhile. “The sensitive topics were approached with caution, care and compassion but still delivered a message that was required on how to handle the subject of mental health. - Workplace Support Skills is a 1.5 hour interactive online training session.

This course is designed to support mental health within the work place. REMINDER! Stay COVID-safe! If you have flu-like symptoms, get a COVID-19 test! FINANCIAL HELP FOR FARMERS & FARM WORKERS

We’ve made some encouraging progress in the fight to grant students at interstate boarding schools exemptions to return home to their families for the school holidays.

While the progress is positive, we still need a nationally consistent approach to border restrictions, with transparent guidelines for term four, and beyond to the 2021 academic year. The mental health toll of these restrictions on interstate boarding school students and their families cannot be underestimated. We must remember, many of these families have battled drought, floods and bushfires. We need a concrete solution to ensure families are not put under this kind of stress again.

√ $64.3 million for the Forty Bends road upgrade √ $55.62 million for the Hartley Valley road upgrade √ $8.28 Lithgow Aged Care Expansion √ $8 million to investigate fast rail for the Central West √ $2 million to Lithgow through the Drought Communities Program √ $1.5 million towards Stage 1 of the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway project √ $1.135 million for Lithgow Blast Furnace

√ $1.06 million for Headspace services in Lithgow

The National Cabinet agreed to a new AHPPC Statement on Boarding Students and Students Living in Border Zones, which supports all jurisdictions adopting appropriate risk-based approaches to ensure boarding students can cross borders and safely return home to their families during school holidays.

This is a big win for families affected by the border closures and is an enormous relief for the kids and their families, who have been through an extremely stressful time.

√ $6,375 for the Portland District Motor Club

√ $1.24 million for the extension of Three Tree Lodge

Last week, the issue went before the Prime Minister and state and territory leaders at National Cabinet.

It comes as Queensland and South Australia prepare to open their borders, ensuring boarding school kids from COVID-free areas can travel home for the school holidays and back to school again safely.

RUNS ON THE BOARD FOR LITHGOW

It takes just 20 minutes to improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival should you be threatened by a bush fire. There are four simple steps to complete a Bush Fire Survival Plan and get ready for a bush fire: Step 1: Discuss what to do if a bush fire threatens your home. IT’S ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE… By Rich Evans, Editor

That is what I had to keep repeating to myself as I was being tattooed last Wednesday at Skin Fantasy Tattoo, as a result of my Challenge to Vanessa Pringle Floral Design of Bathurst with Daffodils Day and her fundraising efforts.

To refresh your memory - Vanessa mentioned that they would be aiming $1000 in fundraising this year which was a doubling of their 2019 efforts. I then laid down the challenge that if she hit $200 in fundraising I would have a daffodil tattooed on me to celebrate the occasion. Now I am not suggesting that there was an overwhelming influx of people who only donated to see if I would go through with the bet… but a whopping $5000 was raised in the end. A huge amount of money and a very worthy recipient in the Bathurst Wig Library ensuring the money went to local initiatives. With that recap out of the way let me tell you, maybe it is because I am getting older, but getting tattooed certainly didn’t tickle. I am no stranger to the experience as you can see from the pics, however, I certainly felt this one. The team at Skin Fantasy, particularly Rowy who tattooed me, were extremely accomodating, professional and fun to be around for the few hours I was there. Given the amount raised was so high, I decided the tattoo should be a bit more significant and so now I sport two quite large daffodils on my right shoulder. They will be all healed in the next few days so we will get a pic with Vanessa, Rowy and the team at Skin Fantasy in the coming weeks. Congratulations again Vanessa on a job well done… what will we wager next year?

VERTO CALLS FOR EXTENSION OF NSW EVICTION MORATORIUM

Not-for-profit training organisation, VERTO, has called for an extension to the NSW eviction moratorium following a report from Tenants Union of NSW which showed a 33 per cent lift in ‘no grounds’ termination of leases by landlords.

The report, Supporting Renters During the Pandemic, highlighted the huge stress renters have been put under during the COVID-19 pandemic. VERTO has seen firsthand the stress locals in Bathurst, Orange, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Goulburn regions have experienced, with an increase in the number of requests for rental support to its Tenancy Advice and Advocacy Service (TAAS) since March this year. Some of the key statistics of the Supporting Renters During the Pandemic report include: • An 80 per cent increase in the number of renters looking for advice on rental termination; • 60 per cent year-on-year lift in calls for support in the April-June quarter alone; • A 33 per cent lift in the number of ‘no grounds’ termination of leases by landlords, most of which occurred when a renter asked for assistance in a rental reduction during the pandemic. The report highlights the upcoming removal of the current eviction moratorium that the NSW Government put in place during the COVID-19 crisis and calls for a continuation of the moratorium, which is due to expire in

mid-October 2020. VERTO CEO, Ron Maxwell, agrees with calls for an extension and is concerned that without a continuation of the eviction moratorium some of the most vulnerable renters in the Bathurst, Orange, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Goulburn communities could face homelessness. “COVID-19 has created unprecedented change in our everyday lives. The impact on employment in particular has created many challenges and for those most vulnerable in our communities, it can be one that has a catastrophic impact. When renters face such a financial burden, homelessness can become a major issue,” Mr Maxwell said. “While some actions in certain circumstances by landlords have been disappointing to see, the NSW Government’s eviction moratorium has provided peace of mind for many renters. We call on the government to continue this support beyond October 2020 to provide some level of comfort for these vulnerable members of our community”. If the moratorium ends, Mr Maxwell said the impact to communities across NSW would be significant. “We support many through our TAAS program and will continue to do so. The increase in the numbers highlighted in the Tenants Union report are a concern and should encourage those in government to support an extension,” he said. 16 Main Street, Lithgow Sun 27th Sept – 2.00pm ART Sunday Presentation - Coda (2017) This documentary follows the life and work of the famous Oscar- winning composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. It explores and portrays him as an inspirational artist, one of the most important of our era. The documentary was shot over a fiveIssueduring 329-25th September year period when Sakamoto 2020 survived a cancer scare. It is an immensely moving account of Sakamoto’s prolific career over 40 years by Director and Screenwriter, Stephen Schible. Cast and Music: Ryuichi Sakamoto Rating: PG

Weather permitting, come and visit the delightful town of Portland just 20 minutes drive from Lithgow. Explore the “Signs of Yesteryear” dotted around the shopping precinct and while there, enjoy a cuppa, snack or meal in this historic shut-away town. You will find much more than you expect. You are invited to check out the Garage Sale at the top of Lime Street - number 33 - straight up from St. Stephen’s Church at the quarry. We need many dollars to send overseas for the Operation Christmas Child boxes to children in hard circumstances. Other fundraising means are cancelled so maybe this garage sale will help a lot. GUILT-FREE BANANA BREAD EVEN WITH a big helping of melted butter or a topping of your favourite jam, you won’t feel guilty eating this moist and delicious glutenfree, lactose-free, and lowsugar banana bread!

“Bananas have a unique combination of nutrients that can help produce serotonin (a happiness chemical in the brain), which is very important during COVID-19.

TAFE NSW Tourism and Hospitality Teacher, Robyn Ward, said this recipe was perfect for people with food allergies, or those who want to eat healthier, but don’t want to miss out on the good stuff.

“I encourage anyone with an interest in cooking to explore the range of courses available at TAFE NSW; there’s something for everyone!”

LITHGOW LIFE SKILLS (DBT) & ART AS THERAPY GROUP

Completely healthy banana bread Ingredients • 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil • 80 grams coconut flour • ¼ cup almond meal • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 6 over ripe bananas • 4 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease a 20 cm × 12 cm loaf tin with coconut oil, then line the base and sides with baking paper. 2. In a large bowl, combine the coconut flour, almond meal, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda and mix well. 3. Place 5 ½ of the bananas in a bowl and mash thoroughly. Slice the remaining half banana diagonally into three or four pieces. Set aside. 4. In another bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, eggs and vanilla then stir in the mashed banana. 5. Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined. 6. Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf tin and spread out evenly with a spatula. Arrange the banana slices on top. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes then cover with foil to prevent the top burning and cook for a further 45–50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. 7. Remove the bread from the oven and cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then carefully turn out onto a wire rack. 8. Brush the maple syrup over the top and cool for 20-30 minutes. Slice and serve toasted and spread with some coconut oil or almond butter. 9. Robyn’s Tip: Freeze over-ripe bananasby peeling them, chopping into chunks and freezing in a container.

WORLDWIDE SPINNING IN PUBLIC DAY The sun was shining last Saturday for the Portland Spinstars group to take part in the “Worldwide Spin In Public Day”.

Come to our group on Saturdays! Starts Saturday 26th September for 10 week programme Adult’s Group 10.00am - 12.00pm

Worldwide Spin in Public Day was started by a bunch of like-minded spinners to celebrate an art that they all love - the art of spinning fibers into yarn. The event takes place on the third weekend of September every year, it started back in 2009. This educates the public about spinning, opens minds and hearts to what they love and allows them to meet new people, get together, and just have a really fun day!

SPRING FESTIVAL SPEAK FOR THOSE WITHOUT A VOICE

Mayfield Garden’ Spring Festival will take place this year from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 25 October.

The full 65-hectare garden - including the 50-hectare private family estate - will be open for the duration of the festival. Apart from experiencing the extraordinary blooms and colours of an awakening Spring garden, visitors to the private garden also get to enjoy one of Australia’s largest English Box Hedge Mazes, the Mayfield Amphitheatre, Family Chapel, Water Garden, Stumpery and rowing on the Mayfield Lake. There is a good reason why Spring is one of the more spectacular times to visit Mayfield, as the garden literally explodes in colour. But this year we think it will be particularly popular as many people will be looking to get out into nature and find a bit of space to spread out with family and friends. It has been a tough few months for everyone, so all of us here at Mayfield are hoping that we can offer some respite for many visitors from across NSW. We are mindful of the fact that the safety of our visitors is our number one priority, and as such we are expecting everyone to play a role in maintaining social distancing requirements. You can bring a picnic lunch, book a table at our popular café (bookings essential), or take advantage of additional food outlets we will be offering during the festival. For example, this year we will be serving a BBQ, coffee and refreshments at the Croquet Court. One important point. We will not be offering bus transport inside the garden this Spring - I think we all agree that it is still too risky to be piling into a small bus. Don’t forget the dates - Saturday 26 September to Sunday 25 October.

I was compelled to change this week’s topic after my partner & I witnessed an act of animal cruelty. It reiterated to me just how vulnerable animals can be & I reported the incident to the RSPCA. By Mardi Williams, Creature Speak

I feel we have a duty of care to protect & be a voice for those that do not have one. I was especially motivated because as an animal therapist who works mainly with psychological concerns of animals - I am a spectator to what abuse & cruelty does to their overall health & wellbeing. So I ask you: Would you report animal cruelty? Do you know how or who to report to? Whether you’ve been a witness or have a concern, it is worth a report & investigation. I have compiled a list of what cruelty includes using information from the Dept. of Primary Industries, RSPCA NSW & Animal Welfare League NSW websites. Cruelty includes but is not limited to: -Animals that are exposed to extreme heat or cold (e.g. animals left in cars), or which are not adequately sheltered -Animals that are suffering from hunger or thirst, are hurt or abused, are left untreated following an injury or illness, are abandoned or which do not receive regular care -Animals that are provided with an environment that is not suited to their needs due to size, breed or infirmity (physical & mental weakness) -Animals that are used to perform an illegal activity – animals used to fight each other or used as bait

-Causing animals psychological harm in the form of distress, torment or terror When reporting, your details are kept strictly confidential. If you don’t know their name an address or details of the animal’s location will suffice. You can also report things you see online: gather links, screenshots & any details of the people involved if you know. Reports are not limited to domestic animals either, livestock & wildlife cruelty should also be reported. Who to report to: - RSPCA animal emergency hotline: 1300 CRUELTY or 1300 278 3589. Online: www.rspcansw.org.au or direct email:inspectors@rspcansw.org.au - Animal Welfare League NSW 02 8899 3333 or online: www.awlnsw.com.au/report-cruelty/ - NSW Police – contact your local station Bathurst: 02 6332 8699 Mardi Williams from Creature Speak is a therapist assisting animals & their people with past experiences, internal balancing , pain & transition into new environments.

PORTLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL’S YEAR 12 GRADUATION Thursday was a day of celebration with a little dash of nervousness as the current Year 12 students at Portland Central School marked their official Graduation Day. A lovely lunch was prepared by the students for their family and teachers.

There are only 3 students sitting their HSC this year at PCS and all 3 are in the MCAT class, which is such an inspiring situation for the school. MCAT is a Multi-Category specialist support class, which allows kids to learn at their own pace and with a personalised curriculum that caters for all kinds of learning and support types. Relieving Principal Matt Quirk, said ”We couldn’t be prouder of this year’s Year 12 cohort especially as they’re all in our MCAT class. Katie Coleman, Rhianna Garland and Noah Nugent have worked very hard over the last 2 years to prepare for upcoming exams and we wish them all the very best over the coming weeks.”

CLUB GRANTS ALLOCATIONS 2020 Wednesday morning saw a small contingent of charities and community groups meet at Esk in the Workies Club to be presented with their certificates confirming the recent grants received via the ClubGrants Program.

Both the Lithgow Workies Club and Club Lithgow have contributed to this fund, that saw over $44,000 given with a further mention of the support both clubs provide to other schools, sports and other organisations during the year. With COVID-19 closing both clubs for a long period earlier this year, the recipients all acknowledged the wonderful support offered by the Workies and Club

Lithgow. Knowing that the lockdown period greatly affected the clubs ability to earn money that, in turn, allows the clubs to support the community. Workies General Manager, Graham Wheeler, said “Here at the Lithgow Workies we pride ourselves on our continual commitment to helping our local community and people. We also take the ClubGrants Program as an opportunity to thank all the volunteers and community organisations for all that they do to support our community as well. The ClubGrants Program continues to support local community

groups and helps make a difference in areas such as education, cultural integration, supporting people with disabilities and employment projects.” Club Lithgow was also represented with their team. Wayne Allan, Chairman of the Board said “On behalf of myself, Vice President Warren Kennedy, Director Julie Hughan and our board members as well as our CEO Karren Jamieson, we have made a contribution towards the ClubGrants Program. We’re proud to be able to do so even after being closed for 10 weeks. We thank and appreciate all the work done by our local groups, particularly in these trying times.” 37 local charities and community groups received funds to continue their amazing work in our region.

VALE JOHN MCMILLAN Contributed by Neville Castle

Last week I attended the funeral of former Portland Principal and good friend John McMillan in Sydney. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret and his 3 children : Alistair and wife Madeleine, Robert and Jane and grandchildren : Frances and Astrid. John was Principal at Portland Central School from 1982 until the end of 1987. John was very well liked and an extremely good Principal and his family were the last to live in the school residence in Vale Street where some of the primary classrooms now are. John arrived in Portland from Werris Creek following teaching in some small schools prior to that. After Portland, John was the Principal at Cabramatta and finally at Dennistone East (near Ryde). The McMillan children: Alistair, Robert and Jane all of course went to school at Portland. The boys were a few years older than Jane and still have fond memories of their early teenage years in Portland. Some of the important milestones that John was heavily involved in included the highly successful school Centenary in 1984 which culminated in a ball for over 800 people in a large circus tent on the site of the Community Centre. John was also Principal and helped take the big step to starting Years 11 and 12 at the school. Probably John’s greatest legacy in Portland was the Community Centre itself. Following the great success of the Centenary Ball and the school seeing the need for an enclosed area for sport and assemblies, the push was on for a permanent structure. As it turned out, John found strong allies in Terry (Cloudy) Day, Yvonne Grove and the school sport staff. With backing for the project from the no-nonsense State Member, Mick Clough the plan was hatched and the Community Centre built. Not before a colossal fund raising effort. Clandestine card games, two-up, walkathons, and concerts were all part of the effort and John was in the middle of it all, especially the concerts where his musical and organizational talent shone. Outside of school, John could be seen around town having a drink and a chat with just about anyone. He will be remembered fondly for his friendliness, honesty, enthusiasm and his community involvement.

EXCITING TIMES FOR TRANSPORT IN THE REGION Local residents, visitors to the region and freight industries have shown keen interest with the Great Western Highway section from Kelso to Raglan set to see a major upgrade, and I encourage local businesses to find out how they can be involved in this exciting project. This $45 million upgrade will provide improved safety and travel time for motorists, with the project also seeing the installation of traffic lights to give better access to the Bathurst Airport and improve intersections. Shifting alignment will also be put in place to ensure that traffic can still flow on the existing highway during the construction to avoid travel dilemmas. Moving closer to the construction phase prospective contractors and suppliers are invited to learn more about the upcoming opportunities, with Transport NSW holding an online industry information session for local businesses on Monday 28th of September. To register your interest to attend the industry online information session visit nswroads.work/kelsotoraglan or email western.projects@rms.nsw.gov.au

OBERON TIGERS HEADED FOR GRAND FINAL SHOWDOW

Oberon Tigers won their way to Midwest Rugby League’s Wallerawang Landscaping Cup grand final for the first time in 17 years with their 20-14 win in last week’s elimination game against Orange United’s Warriors. Story and photos by John Fitzgerald

The Tigers’ third foray in the Midwest competition since 2003 has given them a grand final spot against current premier club CSU Mungoes, and Oberon are ready to replicate their premiership win 17 years ago. In last weekend’s eliminator Orange Warriors’ early pressure on the Tigers paid off with first points and a sixpoint lead which they held for the first 20 minutes of the game. Oberon’s Nathan Booth’s converted try evened up the score in the second quarter before the score pushed out to 12-6 with the Tigers’ next try at the time when Orange’s Tyren Dixon had been sin-binned. Two quick tries to Zane Rowlandson consolidated the Tigers’ lead but poor goalkicking left them vulnerable going into the final quarter. With a full complement of players the Warriors were finishing strongly, scoring twice in the last 15 minutes, but goalkicking let the Orange side down and they were unable to make up the six-point leeway before the final siren sounded.

Oberon’s best players in their win were Blake Fitzpatrick and Charlie Bailey. In the leaguetag elimination game CSU crushed Orange Barbarians’ challenge 28-nil, with Jenn Kimbel, Meredith Jones and Emily Rhynehart the best for the Mungals and join their CSU brothers at Carrington Park, Bathurst in the grand final against strong favourite Cargo.

LITHGOW NETBALL UMPIRE APPRECIATION DAY Lithgow Netball Association celebrated their annual Umpire Appreciation Day last Saturday.

Certificates were presented at the end of each game as acknowledgement of the hard work put in each week by the Umpires. The club has a crew of umpires that are of varying ages so there is always a group of young ladies being mentored to become experienced umpires. Umpiring is not just about blowing a whistle, what has been shown by the amazing umpires this season, as with all seasons, is the instruction they give to the players as they rule. This is particularly evident with the younger divisions. Saturday’s Umpire Appreciation Day was echoed by the players and their families with gratitude of the girls and ladies that give their time each week to ensure that all divisions can play their games in accordance with the guidelines set out by Netball Australia.
