A CASE FOR CHANGE

Issue 336 - 13th November 2020

A number of Lithgow’s business stakeholders were assembled on Thursday at the WSU Hoskins building to hear a presentation from Dr Tim Williams. Dr Williams is an international expert in the economies of cities and regions, and their positioning for the future.

Dr Williams was the CEO of the Committee for Sydney and instrumental in delivering the Cities Deal that has seen our urban cousins flourish. Today he is the lead for ARUP’s Cities Unit. Another interesting element of Tim’s life experience, pertinent to Lithgow, is that he is a product of a Welsh coal mining valley and therefore well qualified to speak on the challenges for this city as we go forward. Dr Williams was invited to speak at the function off the back of the recent report by the Transition Working Group that put forward a case for economic change to underpin the future of the region. The report was favourably reviewed by Dr Williams, and many of the same points he put forward in his presentation were echoed in the report. Particularly the need for private and public partnerships to make things happen. “There are a number of tipping points approaching that Lithgow can take advantage of,” said Dr Williams referring to the global shift in energy production, the rise of technology and digital economies and also the opportunities more recently exposed by COVID. “COVID has been a threat to urban cities and it has created an appetite for new ways of living,” Dr Williams said. The Transition working group was thanked for its work by Council’s General Manager Craig Butler, who acknowledged the quality of the report and his desire to see the recommendations push forward. Portland Central School staff and students held an assembly for Remembrance Day on Wednesday at 11am.

Hi st

A small group gathered on Tuesday 10 November 2020 to celebrate the opening of the newly installed children’s playground at the Hartley Historic School site. The playground will give the community of Hartley a place to gather while keeping the young ones entertained. These works were funded through Council’s Village Improvement Plan and with the assistance of Hytech Quarries. Mayor of Lithgow City Council Ray Thompson said about the playground “It’s so great to see the community coming together, the land managers of the site are working hard to improve the facilities to make them more useful to the people in their community. We are encouraged by groups within the villages of our LGA who come to us with plans and ideas for improving their villages”. The village improvement plans are part of Council’s commitment to support the development of needed community infrastructure in the rural villages. In consultation with communities, Council continues to make improvements to the outlying rural villages of Hartley, Tarana, Capertee, Cullen Bullen and Rydal.

GOOD VIBRATIONS: THREE SIGNS OF QUALITY ADVICE It’s hard to find a financial adviser you can trust. And even if you do, it’s almost impossible for most people to judge the quality of the advice they receive.

But in the end it’s not what you know that matters most when you’re choosing an adviser. It’s how you feel. Here are three ways you should feel when you’re receiving quality advice.

1. You feel prioritised Your adviser should serve you and you alone. They should be paid only by their clients and only for the advice that they give. There should be no other parties involved, trying to bias the advice. This is often not the case. If your adviser works for a financial institution and you’re being charged assetbased fees, then be cautious. You’re probably not being prioritised in the relationship. 2. You feel heard Warren Buffett’s first rule of investing is to “only invest in what you know”. It’s good advice.

TIDY TOWNS PORTLAND GET STARTED ON MEMORIAL WALL The Tidy Towns group in Portland have been busy this week with work at the Memorial Wall site in The Foundations commencing with the pouring of the concrete slab. The memorial bricks will be ordered soon. The Tidy Towns Committee would like to thank those that volunteered their time and energy in making this happen. Another project on the go for the Branch, is their Portland

Beautification Project. Planter boxes have arrived, which the committee is very excited about. Members involved with the project are sure the community will be pleased with the end result of the Planters, once in position. Stay tuned for more updates as they happen. On behalf of Carolynne Davis, Committee member and Kaylin Caddis Publicity Officer.

That’s why it’s so important that your adviser is patient with you, giving you opportunities to ask questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re asking about your own money. If you feel rushed in any way, or just not heard, then you’re probably not receiving quality advice. 3. You feel confident When we feel more confident about our finances, our decisions improve. As our confidence grows, we feel better about what we’re doing, and it changes our behaviour. We get more involved, proactively learning more about our options and how things can be optimised. If you’re receiving quality advice you will feel empowered. You will know what you can and can’t control, and what needs to change when things go off-track. Not all financial advisers are the same and not all financial advice is the same. At Daniel Crump Financial Planning, we’re selfemployed advisers who have worked hard to avoid conflicts of interest. We’re not aligned with any product providers, paid only by our clients and we charge fixed fees for service. We take the time to really understand you and what you’re trying to achieve. There is no rush. We make the effort to compare the possibilities and help you understand what you can and can’t achieve. Daniel Crump is the founder of Daniel Crump Financial Planning. $8,000 AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT GRANT SNOOKI’S NEW TO RECOGNISE THE EXTRAORDINARY DIGS IN PORTLAND SERVICE AND SACRIFICE OF OUR NASHOS

The National Servicemen’s Association NSW – Midstate Branch has received an $8,000 grant from the Australian Government to honour the 194 National Servicemen who lost their lives during the Vietnam and Borneo Wars. The grant was awarded under the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program and will go towards installation of 194 pavers which will be placed next to the war memorial at the Bathurst Cemetery, which was previously dedicated by the Midstate Branch. Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, Andrew Gee MP saluted the members of the Midstate Branch for their continued dedication in preserving the memories and interests of servicemen and women across the Central West. “Nashos were Australian’s citizen soldiers,” Mr Gee said. “They served, because our country asked them to and 194 made the ultimate sacrifice. We must never forget what they did for Australia. “This project will help ensure their memory will live on and also provide a place where their friends and relatives can come and reflect on their extraordinary and selfless service.

follow us on

“This is also the first grant to have been awarded to the National Servicemen’s Association Australia-wide which is a tremendous achievement. “I commend President of the NSW Midstate Branch, James Dietrich and all the members for their hard work and commitment in representing and honouring our local service personnel,” Mr Gee said. Mr Dietrich said: “This grant is the only one of its kind across the country.” “We are proud to be able to honour the 193 servicemen who were killed in the Vietnam War, four of whom were from Bathurst, and the digger who fell at Borneo,” Mr Dietrich said. The Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program is designed to preserve Australia’s wartime heritage; involve people around the nation in a wide range of projects and activities that highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service personnel in wars, conflicts and peace operations; and promote appreciation and understanding of the experiences of service and the roles that those who served have played in shaping the nation.

Snooki’s Boutique Casey Shumak has had a very exciting couple of months! Not only have Casey and her partner Kevin celebrated the birth of their baby boy, Tao, but they have been extremely busy moving in to a new store and has this week reopened in the new location (just around the corner from the previous store) at 2 Wolgan Street in Portland. It’s a much bigger space than before, stocked full of amazing things for your little ones, ladies clothing, decorating and homewares as well as a shelf full of sweet treats and lollies! “I’m not sure how everything used to fit in the old store, it was small and a bit dark. This new space is full of light and it’s like we can take a big breath of fresh air in here,” Casey said. The boutique is opened Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am. Casey also said “It’s been great to renovate and create a fresh new look for Snooki’s. I’ve got more room for stock and also a place that I can have the baby here with me while I’m working. It’s amazing, I’m so happy with how it’s come together.” Be sure to pop in next time you’re in Portland or even make the trip out to visit. news THE IMPORTANCE OF AN OUTSTANDING CRM SYSTEM! Better Business Column | By Steve Semmens, The Persuader

“How you gather, manage, and use information will determine whether you win or lose.” -Bill Gates An outstanding Customer Relationship Management System (CRMS) is about creating and maintain meaningful connections with your very important customers. Even the smallest business can afford to have such a system in place for a few dollars a month, and the benefits of such a system are enormous. The primary benefit is building a detailed picture of your customer by recording each interaction, and through this picture it makes it easier in retaining that customer because you will then be able to proactively predict their future needs, thus providing exceptional customer service, and achieving more sales and more revenue over a longer period of time.

Issue 336 - 13th November 2020

INTERRUPTION TO SERVICE – FLOWMETER INSTALLATION AT WALLERAWANG AND OAKEY PARK As part of Council’s water metering and reservoir upgrade projects, Council will be undertaking flowmeter installations at Oakey Park Water Treatment Plant and Wallerawang Reservoir on the 11th and 13th of November 2020. Council has engaged a local contractor to undertake the installation of new flowmeters at the Oakey Park Water Treatment Plant on Bells Road on the 11th of November and Wallerawang Reservoir on the 13th of November 2020. This will be undertaken as a part of Council’s rollout of smart metering to better capture the water requirements and usage throughout the network. The metering project will allow Council to capture the usage from each service reservoir and better account for usage and losses in the systems across the LGA. The treatment plant provides potable water to residents across the Lithgow township but will not effect the service

to the residents as the reservoirs will still be operating during this time. Wallerawang Reservoir services the Wallerawang township. It is advised that residents in Wallerawang may experience a reduction in water pressure or no water whilst works are being undertaken however the works should only take approximately 3 to 4 hours. After completion of the installation, Council will flush water mains to reduce dirty water and return service as soon as practicable. Residents are advised before using water for domestic purposes to run the first tap that services their property to ensure the water is clean and any dirt released into the system has been flushed before running internal taps. Residents are encouraged to register for MiWater at lithgow.miwater.co to receive notifications via email or text.

Advantages can include tracking your sales process from the initial call, through to the sales presentation, emailing the proposal, accepting the deal, closing the sales and delivery of goods or services. Staff can share client information and all interactions from various staff are in the one place. It improves internal communication and allows you to analyse client data which can be based on a number of parameters including geographic location, gender, age, education, sales volume, repeat orders, customer complaints, repairs, client likes and dislikes. A major disadvantage of a CRMS, is the quality of the information you get out of it, is the quality of the information put into it. This may mean a cultural change for the organisation in relation to all staff realising the importance of putting in detailed and correct data with each and every interaction. Salespeople and technical people out in the field, are notorious for cutting corners and inputting limited or no information. A classic example of a poorly controlled CRMS happened to me recently where I went to a chemist I have been to on a regular basis for eight years and they had my old address in their system. To get my script I had to give my new address, however this was the fourth time I done this in the last twelve months, and I realised very quickly that, to this business at least, I am simply a number, and they don’t deserve my loyalty. Privacy and cybersecurity is vitality important when selecting a CRMS, because when you gather client information you are responsible to ensure that data is secure. Most CRMS platforms are very robust but you need to ask about this when purchasing one. I have used Salesforce for many years as a solopreneur, and with organisations such as Toyota, Walmart, and Spotify I feel I am in great hands. Many CRMS platforms have a free trial period, so try before you buy. If you are serious about being more effective and efficient servicing your clients then consider an intuitive Customer Relationship Management System. It will make your employees lives easier, saves time, helps you understand your customers better by analysing their buying patterns with you, and dramatically improves client retention. Bottom line, it increases sales. “Steve Semmens is an experienced Business Coach who works with senior and mid-level executives, managers, and business owners at all levels of leadership throughout the Central West of NSW. The Persuader coaching process is designed to focus on the individuals core strengths and capabilities to maximise their effectiveness, as well as identifying any gaps or challenges they may have, and then we help to close them. Steve has a Diploma of Executive Coaching, a Bachelor of Business (Honours), and is a Member of International Coach Federation. He has a strong interest in the development and growth of entrepreneurial leaders, especially in regional areas. Steve currently consults with a variety of organisations, helping them to implement effective and successful change management strategies, so they can reach their full potential and achieve the desired outcomes according to their set vision.”

FEDERAL FEDERALMEMBER MEMBERFOR FORCALARE CALARE REMEMBRANCE DAY 2020 As Parliament was sitting this week, I was unable to attend local Remembrance Day services. However, I am very grateful to the Lithgow RSL Sub Branch for laying a wreath at the local service on my behalf. I was honoured to mark this year’s Remembrance Day at the Australian War Memorial. Attendance was limited at the Australian War Memorial due to the COVID-19 restrictions, but the service was no less special or moving. For more than a century Australians have paused at 11am on 11 November to acknowledge our fallen service men and women.

It is as important as ever that we continue the tradition of pausing in remembrance and respect.

VETERANS AND COMMUNITY GRANTS NOW OPEN Grants to support the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families are available, with the latest round of the Veteran and Community Grants program now open. Grants can provide seed funding for projects that promote a healthy lifestyle, help veterans to remain living independently in their own homes, reduce social isolation, support carers and improve access to community services. Ex-Services Organisations and community organisation partners are invited to apply Andrew with Ian Burrett and Norman for funding of up to $20,000 Richardson of Portland RSL Sub Branch in 2018 for local, community-based projects and activities. A small number of large grants of up to $150,000 are available for projects that deliver wellbeing support services and activities of broad-scale benefit to the veteran community. Applications close on 29 January 2021. For more information visit www.communitygrants.gov.au.

JOBKEEPER EXTENDED The Australian Government will extend temporary, enhanced support for a further three months through to March 31 as economic confidence and momentum builds. As part of the extension, the Coronavirus Supplement will be paid at a rate of $150 per fortnight between 1 January 2021 and 31 March. The Supplement is paid to every JobSeeker on top of the base rate, effectively increasing the rate to $715 per fortnight. JobSeekers will also be able to access the boosted incomefree area through to 31 March which allows payment recipients to earn up to $300 per fortnight before they lose a cent of their payment. This measure is encouraging people to re-engage with the workforce which is so important because we know that even a few hours of work a week while on payment can have a dramatic impact on the pathway off income support.

DECENTRALISATION FIRMLY ON THE AUSTRALIAN GOVT’S AGENDA A national conversation about decentralisation is underway, following a series of summits I recently hosted with business and tertiary sector representatives. There is enormous value in partnering with business and the tertiary education sector to develop strategic priorities. These sectors have a wealth of expertise, skill and passion that we need to be tapping into. As Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, and as a country MP, my focus is on turbo charging our regions and creating regional jobs – decentralisation has a key role to play. Historically, governments have focused decentralisation agendas on moving public service jobs to the regions. This is important, but by broadening our focus to incorporate business and the education sector, we can add a lot more firepower to policy making and unlock a whole lot more

investment for country Australia. The 2020-21 Budget saw positive movement in this space, with $41 million invested in a decentralisation research and development policy package that requires businesses to relocate to the regions.

$55 million for the upgrade of the Great Western Highway through the Hartley Valley $2,235,000 for Lithgow’s Blast Furnace Park $1,363,500 for roads upgrades including sealing Hartley Vale Road $1.3 million for the Lithgow CBD revitalisation $1.24 million for the expansion of Three Tree Lodge and eight residential aged care places $1.1 million for the upgrade of Glen Davis Road in the Capertee Valley An MRI license for Lithgow Hospital $1,060,000 for the headspace outreach service $796,800 for local roads upgrade in Lithgow LGA

We know that more regional jobs mean more growth and prosperity for country communities and more dollars in the pockets of regional Australians.

$704,000 for tree removal private property

With the next budget just around the corner, it is essential that we continue to develop and expand targeted decentralisation measures to attract the corporate and education sector to country Australia. The Decentralisation Summits will continue to be rolled out over the coming months, with the next planned Summit to be held with Regional Development Australia.

An employee at Lithgow City Council, Mr Toole said that for someone so young, Rachel’s list of achievements are inspiring. “The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll celebrates women volunteers who give so much to their rural communities, Mr Toole said. “It is an important initiative of the Department of Primary Industries’ Rural Women’s Network. BLUE FOX REOPENED FOR BUSINESS

The 26th of October 2019 will forever be a day that Kat Alexander and her daughters Holly and Laura Vitalis will never forget, after getting the call that their beloved Blue Fox Bar & Kitchen was partially destroyed by fire. Indeed, the entire town of Lithgow and surrounds felt the sadness every time we went by the site over the last 12 months and many have been counting down the days until the reopening! Thankfully the ladies and their team have been able to do just that, almost 12 months to the day of the disastrous fire and they’ve not had a moment to take a breath since. Speaking with Holly recently whilst there having a meal, she said “It’s all coming together and we’ve been so lucky to be so busy since we’ve reopened. We’re just so glad to be back seeing our customers. It’s almost like a family reunion! The Blue Fox Bar & Kitchen is open Wednesday’s to Sunday’s, 12pm till late at 277 Main Street Lithgow, call 6352 1259 or message through Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/thebluefoxlithgow

RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the forum will provide local businesses with the information and tools that can help them tackle some of the challenges they have faced this year, and ways to take advantage of the predicted growth in our communities. “We have a fantastic line-up of keynote speakers and the advice, insights and expertise they can offer will be incredibly valuable to business owners, managers and employees – no matter what sector they are from,” said Mr Harma. “It’s a jam-packed day with three main sessions and at the end of each session the presenters will participate in a live and interactive Q&A so the audience has the chance to be involved in the discussions.” Mr Harma added that the forum will cover a range of topics and include local case studies. “The day will start with the latest on the economic and commodity scene and an update from the local tourism industry which will be followed by presentations on digital marketing, technology, HR considerations, strategies for mitigating risk, the power of brand advocates and future planning for your business. “Federal Member for Calare, and Minister for Decentralisation, Andrew Gee is our guest speaker and I’m also really looking forward to hearing from some of our local business owners including Pip Brett from JUMBLED, Pete Gerber from Pioneer Brewing and Heifer Station’s Michelle Stivens. “It’s going to be a great day and I encourage anyone interested to get a ticket while they are still available!” The 2020 Backing Business Forum wouldn’t be possible without the support of the event sponsors, including Orange City Council, NBN Co, Central NSW Business HQ and Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations. news TYPE 2 DIABETES ON THE RISE IN REMOTE AREAS

Issue 336 - 13th November 2020

Rates of type 2 diabetes are two and a half times higher in remote and very remote areas compared with major cities, according to an Australian Institute of Health and Wellbeing (AIHW) report.

of diabetes, but there are things that people can do in their own lives to reduce their risk or manage their diabetes. People over the age of 40 years should be assessed for diabetes risk every three years, or tested for diabetes annually if known to have pre-diabetes. Diabetes risk assessments should start from 18 years of age for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples who are known to develop the condition at a younger age,” Ms Blackie said. In line with World Diabetes Day, marked every year on 14 November, Marathon Health’s diabetes management and support program aims to raise awareness around living with diabetes, as well as provide adults diagnosed with diabetes access to specialist services. “Getting the right education is key. With the theme

PORTLAND MARKETS BACK FOR CHRISTMAS

TEAMKEELY FUNDRAISER RELAY AT THE FOUNDATIONS

Anna Blackie, Marathon Health Diabetes Educator, says lifestyle choices and lack of education regarding diabetes are huge contributing factors to the continually increasing numbers. “There are many factors that contribute to the rising rates

After an extended hiatus due to COVID, the Markets at The Foundations in Portland will make a return with a twilight market planned for Saturday 5 December from 4pm - 9pm.

The fact the markets are indoors has delayed the market’s return, as numbers for indoor public events have been significantly lower than outdoor market events, but recent easing of restrictions and using the outdoor spaces as well will allow for a fantastic event. There will be all your favourite makers and crafters on hand with great options for Christmas gifts as well as some food offerings. The market will coincide with the Fundraiser organised for local youngster Keely, a 12 hour relay of walkers and runners, with two riders for good measure to raise funds for Keely towards her ongoing costs for medical treatments. For stallholders it will be a much needed boost after a very tough year for market stalls, however there will be reduced numbers due to the COVID safe requirements.

of World Diabetes Day this year centred on nurses it highlights the need and role of your healthcare team who are specially trained to help people with diabetes live well,” Ms Blackie said. Marathon Health’s diabetes management and support team aim to reduce the impact of type 2 diabetes within regional and remote communities. “We encourage people to talk to their GP about their diabetes risk and the practical things they may be able to do to reduce that risk”, Ms Blackie said. World Diabetes Day aims to raise global awareness about diabetes and its effect on the world as a critical health issue. Globally, 463 million people were living with diabetes in 2019 – this is expected to rise to 578 million by 2030.

Submitted by TeamKeely organisers.

Keely is 9 years old and is one very strong, happy and determined girl. When Keely was 7 years old she developed a limp. Further investigations revealed Keely is only 1 of 19 people in Australia who was born with one of the rarest most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine called Fybrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). FOB causes bone to form in muscles (and other soft tissue) leading to restriction of movement. It is a progressive disease that has no treatment or cure. Keely is in year 3 at school and is a happy, strong, fiercely determined girl who fights hard not to let this disease stop her from all her adventures and happily enjoying her everyday activities. Unfortunately Keely has a long road ahead that involves specialised doctors, travel and a lot of equipment in the

future to help her live comfortably and keep her beautiful smile going. We are planning a 12hr relay around the iconic Portland Foundations which is surrounded by stunning views and will involve a bunch of great people and an incredible atmosphere. The 5km loop around is great for all ages, groups, families, all fitness levels and can be done just once or as many times as you like. We would love everyone to come and join us on this extremely special day for TeamKeely. Please follow the Facebook page for more information on getting to know our relay team, how your business can become a sponsor, how you can donate, event details and everything else you need to know about this amazing 12hr mission. We can not wait to see you there!

For more information on the markets contact Kellie on 0429 001 918.

NSW GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES LANDMARK SUICIDE MONITORING SYSTEM

The NSW Government has introduced the state’s first ever Suicide Monitoring System, which will provide up-to-date data for health and support services about the number of suicide deaths across the state.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway said the Suicide Monitoring System will inform critical decisions about services and local health responses in communities impacted by suicide. “Instead of relying on two year-old data released by the ABS, we now have near real-time data that means we can be more responsive and target services to current community needs,” Mr Farraway said. Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor released the first public report from the Suicide Monitoring System, which included data on the number, age and gender of suspected suicides. “The first public report from the Suicide Monitoring System showed the number of suicide deaths in 2020 is

10

tracking almost identically to the equivalent period in 2019. From 1 January to 30 September 2020, there were 673 suspected or confirmed suicide deaths reported in NSW. That is one more than the same time period in 2019.” “While every death by suicide is a tragedy, we need to underline that there has not been an overall spike in numbers in a year that has delivered so many challenges.” The next priority for NSW Government is to develop an enhanced data set, which will include more information about key vulnerable groups, including any previous contact with health services and any social, economic or other pressures that may have contributed to their susceptibility. Towards Zero Suicides is a NSW Premier’s Priority and the NSW Government is investing $87 million over three years in new suicide prevention initiatives. If you, or someone you know, is thinking about suicide or experiencing a personal crisis or distress, please seek help immediately by calling 000 or one of these services: - Lifeline 13 11 14 - Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467 - NSW Mental Health Line 1800 011 511

Issue 336 - 13th November 2020 Skyfall, Monday 16th November at 8:30pm on Nine

One my favourite Bond flicks, this 2012 offering is full of all the usual action and adventure as well as quite a moving ending. And we’re all looking forward to the next instalment, No Time To Die, in 2021. When James Bond's (Daniel Craig's) latest assignment goes gravely wrong and Agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked, forcing M (Dame Judi Dench) to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust - Bond. 007 takes to the shadows, aided only by field agent, Miss Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), following a trail to the mysterious Tiago Rodriguez, a.k.a. Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.

CARCOAR VILLAGE FAIR POSTPONED FOR 2021 The Carcoar Village Association announces that the annual Carcoar Village Fair traditionally held on Australia Day will not be going ahead in January 2021 due to current COVID restrictions, regulations and potential impacts on the local community. “As a small village community, we have a responsibility to both residents and visitors to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone is taken into account,” explains Tim Hansen, President of the Carcoar Village Association. “With domestic tourism rapidly increasing to the region and to our village over the past six months, we have not made this decision lightly but we all feel it is the right thing to do for our community – particularly in light of the median age of our local elderly residents and residents of the Uralba

We are now looking forward to coming back with a bigger and brighter event in 2022.” No official activities, entertainment or re-enactment performances for Australia Day will be hosted in Carcoar on 26 January 2021, however the village will very much be open for business and welcomes all visitors. “Bring a picnic basket and your family, sit down by the Belubula River and soak up the fresh country air. Our shops will be open and we just ask for visitors to be mindful that we are a small village with limited facilities and to be patient and follow safe practices and distancing while you’re here,” adds Tim. Issue 336 - 13th November 2020 WAR MEMORIALS FUNDING Grants of up to $10,000 are available for projects that repair, protect and conserve existing war memorials throughout NSW. The Bathurst electorate will always recognise the service and sacrifice of our locals because we are proud of our military history which helped build the strong region we call home today. I encourage groups to take up the chance for this financial support for conservation projects which could be large scale or involve heritage work. Funding is open for projects such as repairs to war memorial halls, conservation assessments, environmental or arborist advice, honour roll repair, or cleaning. These sites are often decades or more than a century old and should be maintained to the highest standard to recognise local veterans. The NSW Government is proud to support projects that pay tribute to our veterans and ensure our strong Anzac legacy is taught for generations to come. NEW GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS FREE PRESCHOOL FOR FAMILIES The Hon. Paul Toole MP Member for Bathurst Electorate Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Working families and young children will benefit from a year of free preschool with the NSW Government announcing funding for community preschools in 2021. This $120 million commitment will help more than 44,000 three to five year olds attending community preschool. The free preschool program has been supporting families since the beginning of the pandemic and was providing certainty for parents into the future. Since the initial announcement of our COVID-19

response, the free preschool program has saved countless services and jobs while keeping our children learning during their most important years. This funding will assist families to get on with working and support them to divert family income into other essentials. Families will have certainty moving into 2021, knowing that regardless of their financial situation their child will be able to continue with their preschool education. Early childhood services opting into this program must continue to remain open and available to provide education and care. This is particularly important for children as families return to work.

I’m pleased to advise that school Presentation Days for the end of the year can now go ahead. Principals will decide the most appropriate format for their schools, which may include online or live-streamed events, or splitting the school into year group cohorts. Schools must still comply with COVID rules, including the 4m2 rule for venues and social distancing between adults; parents may attend presentation days. P&C meetings can be held on the school site after school hours from 12th November, with a maximum of 20 people at these meetings. In addition, school excursions to the ACT are now allowed and parents can visit the uniform shop at schools.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND AT PORTLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL ortland Central School provides students with opportunities to interact and engage with the community in the form of high interest projects to promote student wellbeing. Projects are planned and developed with the needs of the school and community as a priority and implemented throughout the year. Each project is highly motivating and relevant to student learning needs. Portland Central School classes from K–12 participate in projects, including the Visual Art Skills Project, completing collaborative artworks with a local artist. The Community Garden incorporates assistance from community members to lead garden development across

20

the school, including the formation of a sensory garden. The Cubby House / Billy Cart Project accesses support from the community to work on the construction of a cubby house, encouraging imaginative play and vocabulary development. Students from 7–12 participate in the café, using the commercial kitchen to plan learning experiences

integrated across other Key Learning Areas, including Agriculture, Mathematics, English, VET, Skills for Work and Visual Art. The café is working towards being a fully functional café, with students certified with Barista qualifications. Students in Stage 4 and 5 participate in the High Potential Art Project that includes the chalk wall, mural and sculptures.

A GUIDE FOR DADS: PROMISING CHANGES AHEAD FOR CARING FOR YOUR FAMILY DURING PERINATAL MENTAL ILLNESS As Perinatal Mental Health Week (November 8-14) gets underway, expectant and new parents who are feeling more anxious or down than usual are being encouraged to ask for support.

Western NSW Local Health District’s (WNSWLHD) Coordinator Perinatal & Infant Mental Health/SAFE START Christina Hunt said 1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads experience perinatal depression and anxiety and parents need to know that it is okay to ask for support. “Becoming a parent can be both exciting and terrifying,” Christina said. “While parents can expect normal periods of fatigue, worry or irritability as they adjust to parenthood, it’s really important to talk to your GP if low or anxious feelings persist.” NSW Health, led by the Perinatal and Infant Mental Health team in South East Sydney LHD, has launched a series of videos and tips for dads whose partners are unwell and unable to take care of the baby while they receive treatment. “To those dads who are taking on the role of two parents as their partner takes the time to heal and recover, please know you’re not alone,” Christina said. “Many men have been through what you're going through now. Things do work out.” To watch the video, read tips and hear from other dads, visit: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/mentalhealth/ services/parents/dads/Pages/default.aspx Perinatal mental illnesses like anxiety and depression are common and can be serious. One in five expecting or new mothers and one in ten expecting or new fathers will experience anxiety and/ or depression, affecting around 100,000 families across Australia every year. OLDER AUSTRALIANS The elevation of nutrition in aged care is a welcomed inclusion of the proposed recommendations presented by the Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

In a response to the recommendations made, Dietitians Australia commends the Counsel for putting nutrition first. “Good food and nutrition are important to healthy ageing – for both physical and mental health. Australians living in residential aged care homes have no choice but to eat the food provided, so it’s promising to see the quality of meals being prioritised,” said Robert Hunt, CEO of Dietitians Australia. “In a survey by the Commission looking at quality of care, food was raised as a key concern by older Australians. Food is a practical way to support quality of life and it must be at the core of care.” Dietitians Australia welcomes the proposal to implement requirements for meals to meet each resident’s nutritional needs, as well as being desirable to eat and culturally appropriate. The suggested increase of funding for basic care in aged care homes is also encouraging. “We’ve all heard the shocking statistics of less than $6 per day being spent on meals for residents, and the proposal to provide extra funding for basic care is a positive move. However, we would also like to see requirements for some of this funding to be used to ensure the meals are nutritionally adequate,” said Hunt. To help maintain the health of older Australians, Dietitians Australia also highlights the importance of regular malnutrition screening.

“While we are supportive of a quality indicator program, the current system only identifies when malnutrition has occurred. Switching to the use of a validated malnutrition screening tool would help catch malnutrition in action rather than when the damage is already done,” said Hunt. Dietitians Australia welcomes the recommendations to workforce planning for aged care and on- going professional development for staff, highlighting the importance of food and nutrition training. “As food is such an integral part of every day, upskilling all staff with basic knowledge of the nutrition requirements for older Australians will better equip them to identify and escalate nutrition issues.” However, the omission of minimum staff time standards for allied health was surprising. Other countries, such as Canada, report that aged care residents receive an average of 22 minutes of allied health services per day. Australia trails behind, providing approximately 8 minutes of allied health care per resident each day. “Older Australians deserve access to the best possible care. We would like to see an allied health minimum time benchmark set. This will encourage aged care services to appropriately engage their dietitian, whose role spans across food service, mealtimes, and individual patient care,” said Hunt. “Overall, the proposed recommendations are promising, and we look forward to the final report being handed down early next year.” The Commission is accepting responses to the recommendations made by the Counsel Assisting until 4pm AEDT, Thursday 12 November 2020. Read more about Dietitians Australia’s response here.

Thought of the Week The Importance of Pets & COVID19 Story and Image by Roz Townsend

In normal times, the benefits of pet ownership for health and wellbeing are well-known. They reduce loneliness and anxiety whilst giving daily structure and lifting moods. But in our difficult COVID19 times pets are proving a lifesaver for many, providing companionship, consistency, activity and even joy. Dogs in particular have helped to keep their owners active with daily walks. But it is not only dogs and cats that bring benefits, for some even reptiles have been key to managing severe social anxiety and depression. Some people without pets have seen lockdown as an opportunity to bring one home. Many animal charities have reported an increase of up to 25% in fostering and adoptions, despite most centres being closed to the public.

follow us on

But we need to be cautious and to think about what might happen on the other side of this outbreak when people are hopefully back to their usual routines and have other commitments. Some pets might struggle with the disruption to their routines. Dogs in particular can become needy or prone to barking when their humans become less available. Some tips to consider are keeping their mealtimes and bedtimes consistent, and ensuring they have some time by themselves. Dogs may even need “a rest day” from all the exercise. community BOOMERANG BAGS ARE BACK…COME JOIN US

Issue 336 - 13th November 2020

After several months on COVID standby we are all excited to be meeting again at the Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre in Padley Street, every Friday from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Our Lithgow Group of Boomerang Bags has been meeting for the past two and a half years and we have made over 2500 bags out of donated and recycled fabric. For every Boomerang Bag that is used to do grocery shopping, hundreds of plastic bags are prevented from going into landfill, or even worse, into our waterways and oceans. We also make produce bags used to hold your fruit and veg, which means even less waste from single use plastic bags. Boomerang Bags was started in 2013 by two women in Burleigh Heads. Tania and Jordyn started a conversation about plastic. They found how it was overflowing landfills, floating in the oceans, strangling marine life and causing all sorts of trouble. They began the first group of Boomerang Bags to turn recycled fabric into reusable shopping bags to replace single use plastic.

Over one million single use plastic bags are being used every minute, and 10 million of tonnes of fabric waste is created each year. The Boomerang Bag initiative spread enthusiastically, and is now in over 1100 communities worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of plastic bags have been saved from landfill, and behaviour change went way beyond the bag to other single-use plastics and sustainable living. Not to mention the immeasurable social impact of the conversations, connections and new friendships created in the process! Our Lithgow Boomerang Bags group are a friendly bunch of people who will welcome all newcomers. We are especially looking for lots of new people to help sew bags before Christmas to support several Lithgow Community initiatives including Christmas hampers. We would love to make 500 bags to give away, to spread the Christmas Spirit, and also spread the message about caring for our planet. Don’t worry if you can’t sew, there are lots of other jobs such as cutting and pinning. We have our own sewing machines, so you don’t need to bring anything, and we will gladly show you how to sew the bags…it’s super easy and they make great gifts for Christmas. So come along any Friday and meet the group, or just have a cuppa.

C R E AT U R E TA L K The Importance of Grooming Now the weather is getting warmer, pooches coats are being clipped a bit shorter. However, for those doggy coats that have not been maintained throughout the cooler months their health, wellbeing & owner’s hip pocket could be at stake.

A bundle of thick fur may seem protective & warm, but it can hide a myriad of potential health problems. Not the least of which are painful, skin conditions under a matted, unkept coat. Lack of air circulation can cause, hot spots, bacterial or fungal infections plus fleas, ticks, maggots & parasites could be lurking in the coat, causing further skin infections. Local groomer’s see this more often than they would like. Dogs brought in where the condition of their coat has moved far beyond a simple clip & tidy up - to a full-on shearing show! It is heart breaking for them to see these cases of neglect, let alone deal with their owners’

22

exasperation at the additional cost of the appointment. Which for the most part still doesn’t cover the extra labour & care required anyway. It’s painful for the dog to go through the process of having their coats removed, not to mention challenging & sometimes dangerous for both the dog & the groomer. In extreme cases the dog may need sedation & the work completed at the vet! Other problems that can get hidden are grass seeds & sticks. They get embedded in or pierce right through the skin between toes & other parts of the body. It can leave holes & weeping wounds. Seeds can also get into ears & even eyes which require a trip to the vet for their removal & possible medication. I have been told that one of the worst problems is the build-up of dried sleep near the eyes. It’s tedious to remove & leaves raw, sometimes bleeding sores. More owner’s need to be aware & accountable for their pet if they have higher grooming needs. Any think, long haired or curly, poodle style breed need a consistent brushing routine & regular grooming visits, around every 3 months. Even throughout the colder months. Sound advice & perhaps even an emotional plea from groomer’s everywhere is: if you’re getting a pup, please factor grooming into its life care!
