Chamber Welcome

Dear Chamber Member, I am very privileged to be serving as the current president of the South Suburban Chamber, and I would like to share with you some of the exciting events of the past year and the Chamber’s plans for the future. In the past year the Chamber has continued to grow its membership base through oneon-one contact and social media, networking breakfasts, lunches and business after hours events. We’re also listening to members and developing services and offerings to meet their business needs. Consider the following: • The Manufacturers’ Council and its Heavy Metal Tours, now held at the ECAM Center at MATC each October, offer high school students the opportunity to learn about great careers in manufacturing. • The development of the Health and Wellness Council has resulted in a restaurantsupported Eat Healthy Week and a quarterly newsletter, South Suburban Strong. The Council intends to continue the series on other health and wellness issues through the year. • Last fall the Chamber sponsored its successful first annual State of the Cities program with the mayors of the cities of Oak Creek and Franklin. These initiatives help strengthen our position as a regional chamber, now in our 12th year. When we received a special membership achievement award from the American Council of Chamber Executives for being one of the top ten chambers in the country of our size for membership retention,

new member dollars and the number of new members, we know that the business future in our area is bright. Our focus for the future of the Chamber is in the growth of the number of renewing members; developing new members; and expanding the number of Chamber offerings, including an expansion of the Health and Wellness Council, the Manufacturers Council and the Young Professionals Group. Our growth is not only in our everexpanding membership, but also in its growing list of benefits. In addition to our networking opportunities, the ABLE lunches and business after hours events with five other Chambers, the annual awards dinner and the summer golf outing, we are growing the number of ribbon cuttings, legislative meetings, and volunteer opportunities for our members. As we move forward, the mission statement of the Chamber helps to provide us with a clear direction: The South Suburban Chamber is a business organization whose purpose is to promote the interests of our members and to enhance the regional business climate, economy and community. How are we collectively and continuously enhancing the business climate of our community? What can we do as a Chamber to help? As we celebrate the businesses that continue to enrich our community, we challenge each other to make our business community stronger, healthier and better. Community Introduction

Oak Creek and Franklin are two of the fastest growing communities in Wisconsin with a combined population of about 70,000. Oak Creek is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of Milwaukee County and adjacent to the City of Milwaukee. Oak Creek shares its western border with Franklin at 27th Street and together the two cities have prepared a comprehensive development plan for the 27th Street Corridor, also known as Highway 41. Oak Creek is in the process of developing the Drexel Town Square at Drexel and Howell Avenues as a mixed use destination, with a civic center, retail, housing, and dining options. The I-94 Interchange at Drexel Avenue completed in 2013 provides convenient access to both the cities of Oak Creek and Franklin.

Franklin and Oak Creek residents enjoy both the suburban and rural atmosphere while, at the same time, taking advantage of the services, professional sports and cultural activities of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Both communities share a commitment to planned growth while preserving the best of their rural atmosphere.

History

The two communities of Oak Creek and Franklin both had their beginnings in the 1830s when immigrants primarily from Europe settled in this heavily forested area with its rocky soil, plentiful wildlife, numerous streams, wetlands and Lake Michigan on the eastern boundary. Both Oak Creek and Franklin now boast of industrial parks and a diverse business base of industry, services, and some farming with

many solid residential communities. Oak Creek and Franklin were both incorporated as cities in the mid-1950s when the city of Milwaukee was attempting to annex many of the townships in the area. In the following years the population of each city has grown to more than 35,000 and continue to be among the fastest growing cities in the state of Wisconsin.

Parks & Recreation

The cities of Franklin and Oak Creek both have outstanding parks and recreation areas for leisure time activities. The City of Oak Creek’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department handles programs for children, teens and adults. It also manages two dozen park sites and facilities in the community including a skate park, disc golf course, seasonal ice rink and many other soccer and football fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, sledding hills, nature areas, and basketball, tennis and sand volleyball courts. The Oak Creek Community Center serves as the site for cultural, recreational, and social activities. The City of Franklin’s park system of more than 3,600 acres of land includes the 38-acre Franklin Woods Nature Center, miles of walking and biking trails, woodlands and open spaces, playgrounds, and picnic areas. The Franklin Community Education and Recreation Department manages the community’s recreational programs, including group fitness classes, sports programs, before and after school activities and summer camps. The Rock Sports Complex, a year round recreational site, features biking, baseball, snow skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding and more. The 100-mile Oak Leaf Trail of the Milwaukee County Parks runs through both

communities and serves as a wonderful way to bike, hike or leisurely walk through our scenic communities. The Lake Michigan waterfront Bender Park in Oak Creek offers boat slips for fishing or spending time on the lake. In the near future it will be developed to accommodate both the residential and recreational needs of the area. Milwaukee County offers 15 golf courses including Whitnall and Oakwood Golf courses in Franklin and Oak Hills Golf Club, a nine-hole public course in Oak Creek. Recreational opportunities can encourage both an active or relaxing lifestyle in Oak Creek and Franklin and provide an ideal setting for employers to recruit and retain well-qualified employees.
