t was a pretty big deal when an unknown Calistoga winery upset the French in a 1976 blind tasting, electrifying the world and putting Napa Valley wines on the international map. Winemakers have known since the late 1800s that this part of the valley is a spectacular wine-growing region.

It was an equally big deal in 2009 when winemaker Bo Barrett from the same Calistoga winery, Chateau Montelena, won another landmark victory; getting the government to officially recognize Calistoga as its own designated grape-growing region, or AVA. The Calistoga winemaking community is immensely proud to be the 15th Napa Valley AVA, but they’ve known this official measure of respect for their wines was long overdue. Whether you’re at a world-renowned winery, a high-end cult cab tasting room or a brand new micro-boutique, you’ll find your Calistoga wine tasting experience to be welcoming, unpretentious and memorably delicious.

alistoga has a wealth of things to do and see, from natural phenomena like the Old Faithful Geyser of California and the Petrified Forest, to manmade wonders such as Castello di Amorosa, the spectacular 14th century Tuscan castle winery, and artist Carlo Marchiori’s fanciful home, Villa Catoga. Nature lovers can rent bikes and climb the challenging Oat Hill Mine Trail, explore local back roads and hike or camp at Bothe-Napa State Park. Cyclists and walkers will be happy to learn about the Napa Valley Vine Trail, now under construction, maintaining 44 scenic miles of paved Class 1 biking/hiking trails stretching from Vallejo to Calistoga. A hot air balloon offers an unforgettable experience soaring over this gorgeous valley, kayak trips and glider rides are also available nearby. Families seeking excitement can see wild African animals up close at Safari West. History lovers can visit the Sharpsteen Museum to learn about Calistoga’s rich past. Race fans flock to Louie Vermeil Speedway at Calistoga’s Napa County Fairgrounds for sprint car and motorcycle races; the fairgrounds also has a golf course and RV campgrounds. The area’s most unique restaurant is the Napa Valley Wine Train, which serves excellent food and wine while you savor the passing landscape. The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in nearby St. Helena is a world-renowned cooking school that gives visitors culinary insights through its demonstration kitchen, tours and classes.

Calistoga was once home to a significant population of indigenous people, the Wappo. In the Spanish colonial era of the late 1700s, Napa Valley was controlled by the Mission San Francisco de Solano, located in what is now Sonoma. After Mexican Independence, mission properties were parceled into ranchos in the 1830s, with the first American settlers arriving in this area a decade later. Town founder Samuel Brannan was the leader of a settlement expedition that landed in San Francisco in 1846. Publisher of the city’s first English newspaper, The California Star, he became California’s first millionaire following the 1849 Gold Rush. Fascinated by Calistoga’s natural hot springs, Brannan purchased 2,000 acres to develop a spa reminiscent of Saratoga in New York. (Great true story: the town’s name comes from his tipsy malapropism that he would make this “the Calistoga of Sarafornia,” and the name stuck.) Brannan’s resort, located where Indian Springs Resort is now, opened to the rich and famous in 1862. Completion of the railroad in 1868 made Calistoga a major destination and transportation hub for the upper valley. The town soon expanded its economy with a silver and mercury mine, agriculture (grapes, prunes and walnuts) and tourism, which was given a boost when famous author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote “The Silverado Squatters” about his rustic honeymoon spent in the area with bride Fanny. Calistoga was selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of 12 Distinctive Destinations in 2001.
