MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

WINERIES It was a pretty big deal when an unknown Calistoga winery upset the French in a 1976 blind tasting, electrifying the world and putting Napa Valley wines on the international map. Winemakers have known since the late 1800s that this part of the valley is a spectacular wine-growing region.

It was a really big deal in 2009 when winemaker Bo Barrett from the same Calistoga winery that beat the French (let’s say it again!), Chateau Montelena, won another landmark victory: this time getting the government to officially recognize Calistoga as its own designated grape-growing region, or AVA (American Viticultural Area). The Calistoga winemaking community is immensely proud to be the 15th Napa Valley AVA, but they’ve known this official measure of respect for their superior product was long overdue. Whether you’re at a world-renowned winery, a highend cult cab tasting room or a brand-new micro-boutique, you’ll find your Calistoga wine tasting experience to be welcoming, unpretentious and memorably delicious.

DINING Great food is blessedly abundant in Napa Valley, and Calistoga certainly holds its own as a culinary destination. Leading the accolades is Solbar at Solage Calistoga, whose chef Brandon Sharp was awarded his second consecutive Michelin Star in 2010, and three stars from S.F. Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer. JoLe’s chef-owner, Matt Spector, was named one of Napa and Sonoma’s Rising Stars from StarChefs.com in 2009.

Calistoga has year-round wine, food, music, art and wellness events, and is famous for its spirited parades, like the Lighted Tractor Parade (first Saturday night in December) and the July 4th Silverado Parade. Calistoga was once home to a significant population of indigenous people, the Wappo. In the Spanish colonial era of the late 1700s, Napa Valley was controlled by the Mission San Francisco de Solano, located in what is now Sonoma. After Mexican Independence, mission properties were parceled into ranchos in the 1830s, with the first American settlers arriving in this area a decade later. Town founder Samuel Brannan was the leader of a settlement expedition that landed in San Francisco in 1846. Publisher of the city’s first English newspaper, The California Star, he became California’s first millionaire following the 1849 Gold Rush. Fascinated by Calistoga’s natural hot springs, Brannan purchased 2,000 acres to develop a spa reminiscent of Saratoga in New York. (Great true story: the town’s name comes from his tipsy malapropism that he would make this “the Calistoga of Sarafornia,” and the name stuck.) Brannan’s resort, located where Indian Springs Resort is now, opened to the rich and famous in 1862. Completion of the railroad in 1868 made Calistoga a major destination and the transportation hub for the upper valley. The town soon expanded its economy with a silver and mercury mine, agriculture (grapes, prunes and walnuts) and tourism, given a boost when famous author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote “The Silverado Squatters” about his rustic honeymoon spent in the area with bride Fanny. Calistoga was selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of 12 Distinctive Destinations in 2001.
