Schaar signs let ter of intent to play tennis at Hartford Joe Naiman Village News Correspondent Fallbrook High School senior Skyler Schaar signed a letter of intent to play tennis at the University of Hartford, on April 16. “I couldn’t be more excited about being part of the University of Hartford tennis program next year and for the next four years,” she said. “It’s like a reward that all my hard work has finally paid off.” Schaar has a full scholarship to Hartford; it is a partial athletic scholarship with merit-based scholarship money fulfilling the remainder of her collegiate financial requirements. Schaar also considered the University of California at Riverside, Montana State University, and the University of Oregon before choosing Hartford. “I think the biggest thing for me is how well I got along with the girls on the team and the coach,” she said. “I felt very comfortable around all of them and I just fell in love with the campus.” Torr Terranova is the Hartford coach. “We’re really excited,” he said of Schaar’s signing. “We’re looking forward to what Skyler can

bring to the table.” Hartford was 2-13 during the 2013-14 season, which was Terranova’s first as the head coach. The Hawks were 0-16 in 2012-13. “We wanted a large recruiting class this year,” Terranova said. “Right now we definitely have four new faces with a potential for six,” Terranova said. “We just need more kids to push each other and more kids to believe.” Multiple young players will have the opportunity to mature and work with each other together. “This recruiting class isn’t about one individual person,” Terranova said. “The entire recruiting class is going to be really good.” Schaar was born in Escondido, although her family lived in Fallbrook at the time. She is a lifelong Fallbrook resident who attended Maie Ellis Elementary School, La Paloma Elementary School, and Potter Junior High School before her four years at Fallbrook High School. “I just think it’s a great experience for me to go on the East Coast for college,” she said. “We always like California kids,” Terranova said. “You know they

She was involved in dance and gymnastics when she was younger and was also in Girl Scouts from kindergarten through sixth grade. Schaar began playing tennis when she was 8 years old. “My dad kind of put me into it. He thought that I had good hand-eye coordination,” Schaar said. “He wanted me to give it a try, and I just fell in love with it.” Schaar initially took lessons at the Pala Mesa tennis club with coach Mark Littrell. Schaar credits Littrell with building her game and helping her fall in love with the sport. “He was such a great coach,” Schaar said. Schaar was on Fallbrook High School’s varsity all four years. Fallbrook High School coach Dave Ramirez also gives private lessons at the Fallbrook Tennis Club, and Schaar began working with Ramirez when she was in tenth grade. “I really couldn’t have done it without him,” she said. Schaar also noted the importance of her family’s involvement. “It was tough at times,” she said. “Very proud of her and her work and the commitment,” Ramirez said of Schaar’s scholarship. “I’m very happy for her.”

Ramirez noted that ranked players do not need to participate in high school tennis to obtain scholarships but that many Fallbrook High School players still participate on the Warriors team. “They care about the team and they care about giving back,” he said. “She’s a good example.” In September 2006, Schaar won the Girls 10 Singles division of the Fallbrook Fall Junior Satellite Tournament. A satellite tournament sanctioned by a United States Tennis Association affiliate such as the Southern California Tennis Association allows players to earn section rankings. In January 2012, Schaar and Nataliya Yamkova won the Girls 16 Doubles division at the Fallbrook Winter Junior Satellite Tournament. In July 2012, Schaar teamed with Samantha Hodges of Encinitas to win the Girls 16 Doubles championship at the Fallbrook Junior Open tournament. In July 2013, Schaar and Hodges won the Girls 18 Doubles title at that tournament. Schaar participated in the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in April 2014. Although she lost in the second round, she was one of a limited number of players who were accepted for the tournament. “It was

a great experience for me,” she said. She also broke into the top 100 in the Southern California Tennis Association rankings; the 93rd position was her highest ever. “That was like a pretty good accomplishment for me,” Schaar said. “She’s improved a great deal,” Ramirez said. During her freshman CIF season in 2010, Schaar and Hailey Hicks reached the Avocado East League doubles quarterfinals before a loss to the top-seeded Vista duo. In 2011, Fallbrook was undefeated in league competition to win the team league championship while Schaar teamed with Yamkova to win the Avocado East League tournament doubles championship. Schaar considers Fallbrook’s undefeated league season and league championship in her sophomore year to be her favorite high school memory. Schaar, who teamed primarily with Yamkova, was 30-9 overall during the 2011 season including 24-2 in league competition. Schaar and Yamkova reached the second round of the CIF tournament that year. Schaar’s 2012 season included singles play, doubles matches with Yamkova, and doubles play with Hailey Tucker. Schaar’s 48 competitions produced a 40-8 overall record including a 29-1 Avocado West League figure. Schaar and Yamkova finished second in the league doubles tournament and reached the round of 16 in the CIF tournament. During her senior year, Schaar played only singles, posting 2013 records of 31-7 overall and 20-3 in league play. She placed third in the Avocado West League singles tournament and reached the round of 16 in the CIF tournament before losing to top seed and eventual champion Jessica Failla of Ramona. “I loved the girls,” Schaar said about her Fallbrook High School teams. Although Schaar was not involved in any other Fallbrook High School extracurricular activities, she was active in the Fallbrook Presbyterian Church youth group. Schaar is leaning towards a business and marketing major. “Hartford has one of the top business schools on the East Coast,” she said. “We were really looking at kids who are interested in working hard,” Terranova said. “We want to recruit the overall package student-athlete.” Schaar hopes to work in tennis in some capacity after her college graduation. “If I could play professional tennis, that would be amazing,” she said. She also mentioned the possibility of teaching tennis. “Just going to see what life brings me,” Schaar said. “I think she has high character and is of high integrity,” Terranova said. “I wouldn’t be me without tennis. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else in college,” Schaar said. “We definitely expect her to play a lot,” Terranova said. “I just can’t wait to see what I do on the team,” Schaar said. “I can’t wait to help the team.” To comment on this story online, visit www.thevillagenews.com.
