Palomar Health’s Bariatric Surgery Center recognized again as a Center of Excellence SAN DIEGO – Pomerado Hospital, Palomar Health’s 107bed acute care facility in Poway, has been recognized once again
as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

The supervisors also appropriated $960,000 of Federal Highway Administration revenue into DPW’s work program for the project and made findings that no project or circumstances changes would require any changes to the environmental Mitigated Negative Declaration adopted in July 2012. “This is a much-needed repair for the residents of DeLuz and another demonstration of how safety is the top priority when it comes to our roads,” said Supervisor Bill Horn. “Unanticipated revenue from the Federal Highway Administration will be used to fund this important project, and construction will begin this fall.” The work will take place approximately 1 1/2 miles west of Sandia Creek Drive near Santa Margarita Creek. Our efforts continue to give a growing number of obese patients from the Palomar Healthcare district and beyond, new opportunities for restored health.” The BSCOE application process is one of the most rigorous in the industry. Bariatric programs must meet a strict list of requirements, including: site inspections, commitment to education, multidisciplinary
care and data sharing. Once a program is accredited as a Center of Excellence, the site is inspected every three years to ensure requirements are still being met. Pomerado Hospital’s re-designation is effective until Nov. 30, 2015. Pomerado Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Center for Excellence first received ASMBS accreditation in 2006, but the surgical weight loss program has been caring for patients for more than 18 years. To date, Dr. Callery has performed nearly 4,000 bariatric surgeries. The veteran physician believes that as the epidemic of obesity in the United States continues, the Center of Excellence will see more patients at its doors. “The most promising news,” ™
said Dr. Callery, “is that the American Medical Association now recognizes obesity as a biochemical condition rather than a social vice. Obese patients are beginning to receive the psychological and medical support they need to overcome their condition.” Dr. Callery expects the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence at Pomerado Hospital will help more than 200 patients achieve their desired weight this year. reconstruction and the provision of traffic striping, the work will also include dike, asphalt spillway, fencing, embankment, and rock slope protection. “This will be the permanent repair for that,” Rayback said. The Federal Highway Administration has a Planning and Construction Program which will provide $960,000 towards the project. “We’re very pleased to have that kind of help with the funding,” Rayback said. The estimated construction cost, including contingency, is $1,200,000. The remaining $240,000 had already been budgeted and was derived from Highway User Tax Account revenue obtained from the sales tax on gasoline. The construction cannot begin prior to Sept. 16 due to potential impacts to nesting birds. The project is scheduled to be complete by spring 2015.
