With a such a late beginning to summer this year, we’re a little hesitant to welcome autumn to our corner of the world so quickly. But then we start looking at the new fall releases, including ones from some of our staff favorites, and our hearts start thinking about curling up on the couch with a good book. With school starting up, thinking about new backpacks and lunch boxes (some featured on page 9) also starts to get us in the mood of tea and cocoa and the dwindling of the light. We hope you find lots of inspiration in these pages and we are always appreciative that you’re with us, Dear Reader, no matter the season.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Launched in 1982, it was created in response to a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community—librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types—in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Maybe you were a fan of Ma's debut, Severance, maybe you found it all too real for the current times we live in, or maybe you are new to her writing all together, but this collection of short stories is definitely one to check out. Each story takes place in a world so similar to our own, with something that's just a little off (Yetis, 100 boyfriends under the same roof, invisibility drugs, etc.).

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

New Fiction Local - villagebooks.com

For fans of Circe and The Witch’s Heart !

Thank you for Shopping

I love a good Baba Yaga tale and this contemporary spin-off does not disappoint! Estranged siblings inherit a roving house on chicken legs named Thistlefoot. A mysterious stranger called the Longshadow Man is hunting the house and he is certainly up to no good as he leaves a body count in his wake. Will Isaac and Bellatine be able to evade him? It’s great fun finding out! –Claire

The Witch and the Tsar by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore

Lucy By the Sea

With her trademark spare, crystalline prose—a voice infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness” ( The Washington Pos t)—Elizabeth Strout once again turns her exquisitely-tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, this time following the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton and Oh William! through the early days of the pandemic.

by Ryan Lee Wong

by Elizabeth Strout available in September, hardcover, Random House

Early in the pandemic, King asked himself: “What could you write that would make you happy?” This is that book. Normalseeming, sporty, 17-year-old Charlie starts doing jobs for his neighbor Mr. Bowditch and his dog Radar. Then, when Mr. Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What he knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

Which Side Are You On is both emotional and witty. Reed is a young Asian-American man who is grappling with staying in college or standing up alongside the Black Lives Matter Movement. Would dropping out of school truly help him get closer to the perfect, all-excepting life he seeks?

available in September, hardcover, Algonquin Silas House is known for his novels set in Appalachia but this one is a departure. In the not-so-distant future, Lark flees the fire-devastated U.S. for Ireland, in search of a haven. He befriends a beagle (a rarity since dogs have been eradicated across the Earth) and a woman coping with her own losses. Together they travel across the countryside and learn from each other how to survive, trust, and even heal. I loved this beautiful story. –Claire

On the wind-battered isle of Altnaharra, off the wildest coast of Scotland, a clan prepares to bring about the end of the world and its imminent rebirth. The Adder is coming and one of their number will inherit its powers. They all want the honor, but young Eve is willing to do anything for the distinction. Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award for best novel, and the August Derleth Prize for best horror novel, Little Eve is a heart-pounding literary gothic with a devastating twist.

available in October, hardcover, Penguin Press

Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

New Fiction

by Willow Smith, Jess Hendel available in October, hardcover, Del Rey Lore, legend, and history tell us of the Vikings: of warrior-kings on epic journeys of conquest and plunder. But the stories we know are not the only stories to tell. There is another story, one that has been lost to the mists of time: the saga of the dark queen.

Little Eve by Catriona Ward

Our Missing Hearts

In this powerful novel about the cost of greatness, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback when the world considers her past her prime—from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

The Winners

available in September, hardcover, Atria Books

He's done it again folks! Get ready for the conclusion of the Beartown trilogy, the only 700 page book that will leave you wanting more. Beloved familiar characters as well as new friends are interwoven in this tale of rivalry, community, truth and belonging. Backman has always delivered in character development and commentary on the human spirit, but this novel shows his command of dramatic irony and suspense-building that make him a master storyteller. –Emily

Backman has a special knack for taking characters that seem utterly unlikable at first, and sticking with them until they become real people, and people you come to love and worry about. His patience in telling their stories places you in their shoes. This is made even better by the complex bigger story created by all the little stories of the little lives between the pages. This continues where Beartown started, two rival towns pitted against each other, but uniquely aligned. For lovers of great character stories, of Backman's books, and of the great game of hockey. –Erin

This epic tale of a brilliant woman who must reinvent herself to survive, moving from Mussolini’s Italy to 1940s Los Angeles is a timeless story of love, deceit, and sacrifice from the award-winning author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena.

Rules of Engagement

Before her longtime partner passed away years earlier, provisions were made, unbeknownst to Penny, for a room in a unique long-term care residence, where Penny finds herself after one too many “incidents.” Initially, surrounded by peers, looking out at the beautiful woods that surround the house, all is well. She even begins to paint again. But as the days start to blur together, Penny starts to lose her grip on the passage of time and on her place in the world. Is she succumbing to the subtly destructive effects of aging, or is she an unknowing participant in something more unsettling? Reid’s genre-defying third novel explores questions of conformity, art, productivity, relationships, and what, ultimately, it means to grow old.

New & Upcoming Fiction

The Marriage Portrait

We Spread

At heart, this is the story of a man named Gil, yet it comments on so much more. Gil's life is shaped by both devastating tragedy and incredible good fortune. When he moves from New York to Arizona, his life becomes entwined with the life of the family next door. What unfolds is the story of finding purpose, community and what it means to be good. Millet doesn't disappoint with her sense of humor and critical eye for character and society. –Emily

Delphi by Claire Pollard available now, hardcover, Avid Reader Press

available in September, hardcover, Gallery

Dinosaursis told from the point of view of Gil, a recent Arizonan (after backpacking there from his native New York). As he gets to know himself and his neighbors, it becomes clear that Lydia Millet is an absolute marvel at writing from the perspectives of characters of any age. The seeming realness of the people in this book is an absolute triumph! –Sophie

The pandemic has arrived in London, and the entire world quickly succumbs to the surreal, chaotic mundanity of screens, isolation, and disasters small and large. As our unnamed narrator—a classics academic immersed in her studies of ancient prophecies—navigates the tightening grip of lockdown, a marriage in crisis, and a ten-year-old son who seems increasingly unreachable, she becomes obsessed with predicting the future. Shifting her focus from chiromancy, to zoomancy, to oenomancy, she fails to notice the future creeping into the heart of her very own home, and when she finally does, the threat has already breached the gates.

by Iain Reid

available in September, hardcover, Knopf Maggie O’Farrell, author of Hamnet, has written a new book about Lucrezia de’Medici, Duchess of Ferrara. This is a fictional book but it is written about a very real woman who lived a short and traumatic life during the Italian Renaissance. Lucrezia was a passionate young woman who was isolated from family to become the young wife of the Duke of Ferrara. Being a woman and not having a lot of choices was not the romantic vision we may have of a Duchess in all her finery. O’Farrell’s research and wonderful writing brings to light the spirit of this historical figure. –Kelly E.

by Barbara Kingsolver

To say that Barbara Kingsolver is my favorite author is an understatement! I’m always so thrilled when she has a new book out which is why we had an entire bookclub dedicated to just Kingsolver books a few years back! Demon Copperhead is based on David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. This story is set in southern Appalachia as we follow an orphan boy, Demon, as he tries to manage a hard life while attempting to see the good through all the bad. Kingsolver is an important writer who creates powerful stories with an empathetic heart for her characters. You will truly be captivated by every page of this novel as I was. –Kelly E.

Winner of the Washington State Book Award and named to numerous “Best Book of the Year” lists, The Cold Mil lions follows the lives of orphaned brothers, Gig and Rye Dolan, as they struggle to realize their dreams of a better life. Spokane’s Free Speech Riots of 1909 form the backdrop of the novel and historical figures Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and Police Chief John T. Sullivan anchor the plot. An intimate exploration of love, family, betrayal and loyalty, this book presents a wide range of discussion and programming opportunities leading up to the author’s visit in March of 2023.

available now, hardcover, Redhook Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the island of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Years on, speculation is mounting that Penelope’s husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus' empty throne—not yet. Penelope knows that any choice she makes could plunge Ithaca into bloody civil war. Only through cunning, wit, and her trusted circle of maids, can she maintain the tenuous peace needed for the kingdom to survive.

For Arthur Less, life is going surprisingly well. But nothing lasts: the death of an old lover and a sudden financial crisis has Less running away from his problems yet again. Less roves across the “Mild Mild West,” through the South and to his midAtlantic birthplace, with an ever-changing posse of writerly characters and his trusty duo–Dolly the pug and Rosina the camper van. We cannot, however, escape ourselves—even across deserts, bayous, and coastlines. From his estranged father and strained relationship with Freddy, to the reckoning he experiences in confronting his privilege, Arthur Less must eventually face his personal demons.

Loni Murrow is an accomplished bird artist at the Smithsonian who loves her job. But when she receives a call from her younger brother summoning her back home to help their obstinate mother recover after an accident, Loni’s neat, contained life in Washington, DC, is thrown into chaos.

I am completely obsessed with this book. The time: just after the Great War and the years following... and leading toward World War II. The place: Britain. The characters: wonderfully cast. The Seagrave children, and their strange upbringing, are laid out over the years in a series of vignettes, clippings, and letters. Bits are whimsical and other bits are suspenseful as we become engaged in WWII times. This is a debut novel for Quinn, so I am eagerly anticipating more excellent reads! —Erin

The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn

Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk has written some of my favorite books, including My Name is Red and Snow. In his newest novel, set in the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the century, we're faced with a plague on a fictional island—one that is sharply separated in religious, cultural, and ethnic background. How does one battle a plague when two clashing cultures cannot agree on a way to solve it? This reads like a non-fiction historical account with much detail and polarizing viewpoints. I paced myself with this one, very much reminiscent of what we've all been experiencing through this pandemic. It is ultimately worth the read thanks to his superb storytelling. –Erin

available in September, paperback, Harper Erdrich will never fail to leave me in awe of her storytelling. Tookie's character offers a unique glimpse of the turmoil that was the summer of 2020. While being haunted by ghosts, literally and metaphorically, she finds solace in her community as it bands together through thick and thin. While it is not a sequel, it is a really great modern-day follow-up to The Night Watchman ! –Kiana

Fantasy & Science Fiction

Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book's content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries. Devon’s brothers grow up feasting on stories of valor and adventure, and Devon—like all other book eater women—is raised on a carefully curated diet of fairytales and cautionary stories. But real life doesn't always come with happy endings, as Devon learns when her son is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger—not for books, but for human minds.

Murder, murder most foul indeed. Whatcom County’s history records historic events, people, and places. Few of them describe any of the violence that occurred among the new lives being made by local settlers.

Each book delves into over a dozen murders—well more than I ever thought would be found in the Fourth Corner. The murders range from killing sprees, to disagreements over trade and of course money. Some are just sudden and bad choices made by drunkards and crimes of passion. If you are a fan of gruesome murders, then be sure to learn more about those that took place in our very own backyards. Who knows? One of those backyards may be yours.

The contribution of women to Whatcom County's history is to put it simply, vital, amazing, and mostly unrecognized. However, the book 52 Women of Whatcom by the League of Women Voters of Bellingham/Whatcom County changes that. This informative book covers 52 women who were (and still are) instrumental in laying the foundations of today's Whatcom County. The book is divided into three sections: pioneer women, modern women and ladies of present. Each generation builds upon the legacy of the previous generation.

Village Books in Lynden Store Manager Troy Luginbill knows a LOT about local history and is excited to share a couple of his favorite titles with you.

52 Women of Whatcom by the League of Women Voters of Bellingham/Whatcom County

There is, of course the story of Phoebe Judson, Elle Higgenson, Bess Bay, Claire v.g. Thomas, Noemi Ban, and many other women who built Whatcom County with their stories and accomplishments.Oneofthemore

notable stories is that of the Aftermath Club. Starting in 1895, the Aftermath Club was a liter ary and social group for women. By the early 1900s they were not just well read, but organizing themselves to assist the community through many local projects and programs. These efforts were inspired by the many titles they discussed. Titles often considered beyond a woman’s ability to understand subjects like politics, economy and social bonds.

Troy's RecommendationsReading

Murder in the Fourth Corner by Todd Warger

Todd Warger's three books, Murder in the Fourth Corner, More Murder in the Fourth Corner and More Murder and Mayhem in the Fourth Corner, all contain detailed accounts of murders across Whatcom, Island, Skagit and San Juan counties spanning from settle ment to the early 1900s.

52 Women of Whatcom is a must read if you are a fan of local history and want to find some of the important women who make Whatcom County the great place it is today.

Formidable : American Women and the Fight for Equality 1920-2020 by Elisabeth Griffith available now, hardcover, Pegasus Books

Magnificent Rebels :

The role of the flatboat in our country’s evolution is far more significant than most Americans realize. Like the Nile, the Thames, or the Seine before them, the western rivers in America became a floating supply chain that fueled national growth. Settler families repurposed the wood from their boats to build their first cabins in the wilderness; cargo boats were broken apart and sold to build the boomtowns along the water route. In the present day, America’s inland rivers are a superhighway dominated by leviathan barges, carrying $80 billion of cargo annually. As a historian, Buck resurrects the era’s adventurous spirit by building his own flatboat, but he also challenges familiar myths about American expansion, confronting the bloody truth behind settlers’ push for land and wealth.

by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser available in September, hardcover, Doubleday

The inside story of the four years when Donald Trump went to war with Washington, from the chaotic beginning to the violent finale, told by revered journalists Peter Baker of the New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker—an ambitious and lasting history of the full Trump presidency that also contains dozens of exclusive scoops and stories from behind the scenes in the White House, from the absurd to the deadly serious.

Samhain :

The modern celebration of Halloween is derived from the ancient festival of the dead known in Ireland as Samhain. It is from Ireland that we have inherited most of our Halloween traditions, mainly through the diaspora. Delving into the ancient past, this book uncovers the history of this festival in Britain, Ireland and Brittany, including the forgotten goddess Tlachtga and the sacred temple of the Druids, where the first Halloween fires were lit.

The First Romantics and the Invention of the Self by Andrea Wulf available in September, hardcover, Knopf

From the Pulitzer-Prize-winning NewYork Times reporter who has defined Donald J. Trump's presidency like no other journalist: a magnificent and disturbing reckoning that moves beyond simplistic caricature, chronicling his rise in New York City to his tortured post-presidency and his potential comeback. It is the definitive account of one of the most norms-shattering and consequential eras in American political history.

The 19th Amendment was an incomplete victory. Black and white women fought hard for voting rights and doubled the number of eligible voters, but the amendment did not enfranchise all women, or even protect the rights of those women who could vote. A century later, women are still grappling with how to use the vote and their political power to expand civil rights, confront racial violence, improve maternal health, advance educational and employment opportunities, and secure reproductive rights.

One Hundred Saturdays : Stella Levi and the Search for a Lost World by Michael Frank, illustrated by Maira Kalman available now, hardcover, Avid Reader Press Michael Frank went to Stella Levi’s Greenwich Village apartment one Saturday afternoon to ask her a question about the Juderia, the neighborhood in Rhodes where she’d grown up in a Jewish community that had thrived there for half a millennium. Neither of them could know this was the first of 100 Saturdays that they would spend in each other’s company as Stella traveled back in time to conjure what it felt like to come of age on this luminous, legendary island in the eastern Aegean, which the Italians began governing as an official possession in 1923 and transformed over the next two decades until the Germans seized control and deported the entire Juderia to Auschwitz.

This isn’t just a letter to the author’s daughter. It’s an open and honest account of navigating raising a transgender child in today’s society, and all the challenges and joys along the way. When these two parents decide to support their child as she asserts her girlhood, they learn that their very family can and will be threatened by those who don’t agree with their choices. This important book is about unconditional familial love and being true to ourselves, no matter what. –Claire

What happens when an incompetent boat builder, an inept captain and engineer, and two college students dreaming of a tropical cruise come together? An absolute nightmare. A Visit with the Cottage Fairy

Photographs courtesy of Paola Merrill

Village Books Events Coordinator Claire McElroy-Chesson recently caught up with Merrill — a former Village Books bookseller and graduate of Western Washington University—and asked her some questions in anticipation of her upcoming book, The Cottage Fairy Companion, hitting bookshelves later this fall .

A: I have so many fond memories of my time working at Village Books. A few years ago I moved to a small town in Okanogan County to work at a preschool. Once lockdown hit us I found myself temporarily without work, so I decided to make use of my time getting creative with my camera. I began to film the nature in my area and uploaded some short films to YouTube. I hoped the beauty and romanticism of the videos would offer some peaceful escapism to those who also felt isolated and anxious during such a difficult time.

A: Thank you so much! I was inspired by the sights and sounds of the Cascade mountains I call home, wanting to share my love of nature, simplicity, and cozy home life. My book is a collection of meditative prose, poetry, recipes and crafts.

Q: As an influencer, who are YOU influenced by?

Q: We miss you here at Village Books! I recall your natural artistry that manifested in beautiful window displays. Can you take a walk down Memory Lane and share a favorite memory from your time with us?

A: To have my own Etsy shop, TheCottageFairyArt, has always been a dream of mine. I am so happy to be able to pour my love of fairytales, flowers, and nature into my art. I am particularly inspired by children's books and illustration.

A: I am deeply influenced by my family and ancestors. I love delving into the history of my people and learning about the legends and experiences that make me who I am.

All our unique gifts like language, math, and science do not make us happier or more “successful” (evolutionarily speaking) than other species. Our intelligence allowed us to split the atom, but we’ve harnessed that knowledge to make machines of war; our obsession with lawns has contributed to the growing threat of climate change; we are sexually diverse like many species yet stand apart as homophobic; and discriminate among our own as if its natural, which it certainly is not. Is our intelligence more of a curse than a gift?

The kingdom of fungi has survived all five major extinction events. They sustain critical ecosystems, recycling nutrients and connecting plants across vast areas, and help to produce many staples of modern life, such as wine, chocolate, bread, detergent, and penicillin. Today, in the face of urgent ecological, societal, and spiritual crises, fungi are being engineered to grow meat alternatives, create new sources of medicine, produce sustainable biomaterials, and even expand our collective consciousness.

The Future is Fungi :

In each example, she clearly demonstrates how traits were produced by the complex and diverse interactions of genes and the environment and urges us to consider how that same process evolves behavior in us humans.

If Nietsche Were a Narwhal : What Animal Intelligence Reveals About Human Stupidity

How to Speak Whale :

For centuries, people have been returning to the same tired nature-versus-nurture debate, trying to determine what we learn and what we inherit. Here, biologist Zuk goes beyond the binary and instead focuses on interaction, or the way that genes and environment work together. Driving her investigation is a simple but essential question: How does behavior evolve?

The American naturalist John James Audubon is widely remembered for his iconic paintings of American birdlife. But Audubon was also a brilliant writer—and his keen gaze took in far more than creatures of the sky. Culled from his published and unpublished writings, Audubon at Sea explores Audubon’s diverse observations of the ocean, the coast, and their human and animal inhabitants. With Audubon expert Christoph Irmscher and scholar of the sea Richard J. King as our guides, we set sail from the humid expanses of the American South to the shores of England and the chilly landscapes of the Canadian North.

In 2015, Tom Mustill and a friend were paddling until a humpback whale breached, landing on top of them. He was certain he was about to die, but they both survived, miraculously unscathed.

Drawing from his experience as a naturalist and filmmaker, Mustill started investigating human–whale interactions around the world when he met two tech entrepreneurs who wanted to use artificial intelligence to discover patterns in the conversations of animals and decode them. As he embarked on a journey into animal eavesdropping technologies, where big data meets big beasts, Mustill discovered that there is a revolution taking place in biology, as the technologies developed to explore our own languages are turned to nature.

Angels Everywhere: Poems

The poems in Reinhabited have survived a slow burn through four and a half decades. Though far-ranging in their settings and themes, Michael Daley's New & Selected Poems embody a deep bicoastal commitment through reminiscent descriptions of the New England where he grew up, and through meditations on his adopted home, the Pacific Northwest, where the practice of the art of poetry has sustained him.

Gold!

What is namaste? It’s found in a smile, a friendship, a celebration. It exists in silence; it can be said when you’re happy or when you’re feeling low. For one small girl in a bustling city, namaste (“I bow to you”) is all around her. In a sweet, universal text, debut author Suma Subramaniam shines a light on a word with significance far beyond yoga class, while artist Sandhya Prabhat makes the concept of mindfulness come alive in delightful illustrations likely to draw children in again and again.

Contrary to what you may believe, this story is not about a kitten, hungry and dirty, scared and alone, needing a home. It is also not about the dog who heard the kitten meowing sadly. Even less so about the woman and child walking the dog, who stopped when their dog heard the kitten. Nor is it about the friends who brought a box for the kitten, or the man who offered it some milk. No, this story is not about a kitten at all—well, maybe a little—but more importantly this is a story about community, compassion, and generosity.

When books are banned, students cannot access critical information to help them understand themselves and the world around them. We understand that limiting young people’s access to books does not protect them from life’s complex and challenging issues. Parents lose the opportunity to engage in teachable moments with their kids, and communi ties lose the opportunity to learn and build mutual understanding.

We trust individuals to make their own decisions about what they read and believe. Parents have the right to guide their children's reading, but parents should not be making decisions for other parents' children. Specifically, a small group of parents should not dictate what books other people's children are allowed to read.

If you asked 12-year-old Fred to draw a map of her family, it would be a bit confusing: Her birth father was never in the picture, her mom died years ago, and her stepfather is now expecting a baby with his new girlfriend. According to Fred’s teacher, maps don’t always give the full picture of our history, but more and more it feels like Fred’s family is redrawing the line of their story . . . and Fred is left feeling off the map. Soon after learning about the baby, Fred hears that the town will be taking in hundreds of refugees seeking safety from war-torn Kosovo. Some people in town think it’s great and want to help. Others, however, feel differently, causing friction within the community. Fred, who has been trying to navigate her own feelings of displacement, ends up befriending a few refugees. But what starts as a few friendly words in Albanian will soon change their lives forever, not to mention completely redraw Fred’s personal map of friends, family, home, and community.

Local Historical Fiction I Survived the Wellington Avalanche, 1910

Maggie Stephens’s stutter makes school especially hard so when her unsympathetic father threatens to send her away for so-called “treatment,” she reluctantly agrees to her mother’s intervention plan: a few weeks in the fresh air of Wildoak Forest, visiting a grandfather she hardly knows. It is there, in an extraordinary twist of fate, that she encounters an abandoned snow leopard cub, an exotic gift to a wealthy Londoner that proved too wild to domesticate. But once the cub’s presence is discovered by others, danger follows, and Maggie soon realizes that time is running out, not only for the leopard, but for herself and the forest as well. Told in alternating voices, Wildoak shimmers with beauty, compassion, and unforgettable storytelling as it explores the delicate interconnectedness of the human, animal, and natural worlds.

(I Survived Series #22) by Lauren Tarshis available in September, paperback, Scholastic The Wellington snow slide of 1910 was—and still is—the deadliest avalanche in America’s history. At the Wellington train depot in the Cascade Mountains, two trains sat stranded, blocked in by snow slides to the east and west. 20 foot high drifts of snow coverd the tracks. Some passengers braved the storm to hike off the mountain, but many had no choice but to wait out the storm. But the storm didn’t stop. One day passed, then two, three . . . six days. The snow turned to rain. Then, just after midnight on March 1, a lightning storm struck the mountain, sending a 10-foot-high wave of snow barreling down the mountain. The trains tumbled 150 feet. 96 people were dead. Lauren Tarshis's story of one child surviving the frozen nightmare pounds with page-turning action and heartwarming hope.

Rust in the Root by Justinia Ireland available in September hardcover, Balzer & Bray/Harperteen Rust in the Root is an intriguing blend of historical fiction and fantasy, set in 1937 America where magic augments the already devastating conflicts, tying into the real-world issues of racism and corruption. From a fascinating premise comes a story more powerful and true than many strictly historical works of fiction. Though the characters are spectacular, it’s Justina Ireland’s expert world building that stands out. I recommend this book for enjoyers of fantasy and alternate history, and everyone looking for something different. –Louisa M. age 19

After his mother is killed in a car accident, Asher and his friends (also grieving with their own familial losses) embark on a road trip, leading to the discovery that no one grieves the same and they certainly do not have to do it alone. While I felt the writing style edged toward a little repetitive, I appreciated the fresh way of looking at the grieving process that this book offered honestly and with slight touches of humor at times. –Kaatri G. age 16

From a Gulf War grunt to a Marine Major in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Andrew Hesterman saw it all. Radio man offers a highly personal and unfiltered view of the Marine Corps as it transitioned from the post-Vietnam analog Reagan era to the post- 9/11 high-tech George W. Bush and Obama years. Radioman provides an honest and vivid portrait of the US Marine Corps and the modern military. Andrew Hesterman will join the discussion virtually.

The poems in Reinhabited have survived a slow burn through four and a half decades. Though far-ranging in their settings and themes, Michael Daley's New & Selected Poems embody a deep bicoastal commitment through reminiscent descrip tions of the New England where he grew up, and through meditations on his adopted home, the Pacific Northwest, where the practice of the art of poetry has sustained him. The spirit of a wanderer praising wilderness, the wind, cloud mass, human community, the hearty lives of plants and animals, rings through these poems.

In Person at Village Books in Fairhaven Lucy, a young woman with an uncertain past, finds herself thrust into a mysterious anthropology museum that con verts into a disco club each night. As she moves through its hallucinatory galleries, her grip on reality slowly slips away, leaving her with one question: what happens when the stories we tell about ourselves begin to unravel? Alyssa Quinn holds an MFA from Western Washington University and is currently working on a PhD at the University of Utah. Her chapbook, Dante's Cartography, was published by The Cupboard Pamphlet in 2019. Habilis is her first novel. Read a staff review on page 20.

In Person at Village Books in Fairhaven Bewildered is Jessie Ulmer’s collection of “Hansel & Gretel” reimaginings. These prose and poetry pieces explore the different ways in which people experi ence, remember, and process trauma, as well as the differ ent ways fairy tales themselves are retold and recycled, with Maria Tatar’s early translation of “Hansel & Gretel” as a backdrop. Jessie Ulmer is a queer writer and editor, an identical twin, and a swan by birth. She uses aspects of speculative fiction to explore themes of ability, physical and mental illness, gender, sexuality, and the intersections of identity within her work. Jessie delights in editing for Sword & Kettle Press, a tiny, independent publishing house that focuses on inclusive feminist fairy tales and speculative fiction.

Are we living in reality? Is this the past, or the future? And is there a human on the other side of this screen? Is this book fiction or nonfiction? These questions rear up and twist back on themselves in Ubi Sunt, a genre-breaking imaginative work by Google Fellow and AI researcher Blaise Agüera y Arcas. Postmodern in the spirit of W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn and Benjamin Labatut’s When We Cease to Understand the World, Ubi Sunt is an erudite, compulsively readable, all-terrain joyride across the uncanny valley between yesterday and tomorrow.
