preSerVInG FaMILy WeaLTH WITH a WILL TrUST

Most couples hope that their estate will pass to their loved ones eventually. But for many this will not happen unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees.

To help protect a couple’s estate, the solution may be a will incorporating a Trust. A testamentary Trust can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. On the death of one partner, their Will specifies that their share of the estate is placed in Trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally their children and grandchildren. But under the terms of the Trust the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property and to enjoy the other assets, for the rest of their life.

On the death of the other partner the Trust comes to an end and the estate passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the estate it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the beneficiary’s inheritance is protected.

This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners. A Trust can help each person in the relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the estate. if the surviving partner wants to move they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Westminster Law assesses the circumstances of couples and arranges the Trust that will provide the best protection for them, their family and their assets.

From Treforest to the Top: Welsh designer dan Thomas Shortlisted for national Bathroom design award

when you walk into the Thomas Vaughan showroom in Treforest, South wales, there’s an immediate sense that this is more than just a place for home renovations – it’s a space where creativity, craftsmanship, and vision come together. And now, one of the company’s rising stars, dan Thomas, is making waves nationally as a shortlisted finalist for the kBSa Bathroom designer of the year 2025.

we caught up with Dan at the showroom, where he took a break from his latest projects to share the story behind the award-nominated bathroom, what inspires his design work, and why he believes the future of bathroom design lies in combining timeless elegance with cutting-edge technology.

“This bathroom was about more than aesthetics — it was about transforming the way the client lives.”

Dan’s shortlisted design was a bold reimagining of a dated layout: two small, disconnected rooms knocked into one generous space that now feels like a luxury spa retreat.

“i’m absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted,” Dan says with a smile. “The bathroom i submitted was a modern and luxurious twist on classic design. The space gave me the chance to really push my creative thinking — and more importantly, deliver something truly special for the client.”

The final result is a space filled with warm tones, clever lighting, and a layout that balances both form and function — all underpinned by Thomas Vaughan’s design philosophy: the client comes first.

“They saw the dream before we even lifted a hammer.”

One thing that sets Dan apart is his approach to the design journey. Using 4D Virtual reality technology in the studio, clients are able to explore their dream space in immersive detail before any renovation begins.

“It’s a complete game-changer,” Dan explains. “Clients often struggle to visualise a space from 2D plans or flat drawings. With our 4D VR system, they can literally step into the room before it exists — which builds confidence and excitement and allows us to refine the design together before work starts.” a passion rooted in personal pride

Dan joined Thomas Vaughan Ltd several years ago and has become a key part of their in-house design team. He describes the company as “a family,” and says the supportive environment has helped him grow creatively. “Being based in Treforest, we’re a tight-knit team that really cares about each project. every kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom we design is bespoke, and that’s what makes it so rewarding. To now be recognised on a national level by the KBSA — well, it’s just an incredible feeling.” a prestigious Honour

The kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists association (kBSa) is the UK’s only dedicated trade association for the KBB industry, representing independent retailers and championing the highest levels of professionalism and design excellence since 1978.

Finalists will gather during october 2025 at the Belfry Hotel and resort, west Midlands, for the KBSA Designer Awards Dinner, where winners will be revealed.

Until then, Dan remains focused on his next big ideas.

“Design is always evolving, and so am i whether it’s a family bathroom or a grand master en-suite, the goal is the same: to help people fall in love with their homes all over again.”

And judging by the national spotlight now shining on Treforest, it seems Dan Thomas is doing exactly that.

Vale resort Completes £100,000 Spa refurbishment with Launch of new relaxation rooms and online Booking System

The award-winning Vale resort, nestled in the heart of Vale of Glamorgan countryside, has completed the final phase of its extensive £100,000 refurbishment of the Vale Spa.

The newly completed relaxation areas include The Silent Cwtch: a serene, atmospherically-lit retreat with seven heated water beds in the main space and complemented by two smaller sections, each housing two additional heated water beds. This deeply restorative environment has been created for guests in search of quiet contemplation or total relaxation; a restorative space within which to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, and unwind before or after a rejuvenating treatment.

The Chromatherapy Suite: a relaxing space with wooden rocker style seating uses colour light therapy to restore balance to the body and mind. Chromotherapy states each colour has a specific vibration frequency and relates to different physical symptoms. it is said to work by interacting with the body’s energy systems to reduce tension, promote healing, and have a soothing effect.

The Aromatherapy Cube: this space offers 4 nu wave beds with a wave and pulse motion using heat to relax the muscles and features an innovative S shaped curve where the zero gravity wave positioning helps the circulatory system and eases back pain. Add to this the therapeutic aroma to help calm the body, mind and spirit and you’ll leave feeling totally rejuvenated.

Following on from a treatment, guests are able to refuel with a balanced lunch, using locally sourced ingredients, designed to complement your spa experience and served in the relaxed surroundings of our Vale Grill restaurant. The Spa Chai Cafe offers fresh coffee, soft drinks and sweet treats. if you’re celebrating we can offer you a private space and maybe something a little stronger.

in line with these new facilities, the Vale resort has introduced a dedicated online booking system for all spa treatments. Guests can now book treatments and half day spa visits at their convenience, with more than 20 treatments available; from the popular elemis expert Touch reveal Facial, to the rejuvenating Temple Spa rock of the Mediterranean massage. The full treatment list can be viewed on the Vale resort website here.
