WhY Do WE NEED A ProPErtY ProtECtioN truSt?

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their loved ones eventually. But this will not happen for many unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. on the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together but have children from different partners.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. if the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property.

westminster law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Westminster Law are specialists in organising this.

AsChristmas approaches many of us are busy planning our delicious foodie treats. this can be exciting for humans but there are in fact lots of food that can be very harmful to pets. here at Barrmore vets we understand that this may be forgotten amongst all the festivities so have put together a reminder of the most common dangers:

The following foods should never be fed to your pets – chocolate, onions, nuts, blue cheese, fruit cakes, puddings and mince pies, bones (including turkey bones), garlic, chives, caffeine, avocado, grapes, raisins, yeast dough, milk, and alcohol.

it is not only food that proves a hazard at Christmas. we are more likely to have poisonous plants in the home at this time of year. These include holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, ivy and lilies (specific risk to cats). If ingested these plants can cause vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea to name a few so should be avoided or kept well out of reach.

irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten. Make sure your tree is secured to avoid toppling over.

ingestion of batteries is more common at this time of year. if the battery is chewed and pierced it can cause chemical burns and heavy metal poisoning. if they are swallowed whole it is possible they could cause an obstruction.

with the weather turning colder antifreeze is often used during Christmas and New Year. if ingested it is very dangerous. it is sweet tasting and very palatable. even a very small quantity can cause serious kidney damage and can be fatal.

Keep a note of your vet’s Christmas opening times and their emergency provisions.

if you suspect that your pet has ingested any of these items, contact your vet immediately – don’t delay!

Decorations provide a specific risk. Baubles will tend to splinter or smash into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages and dogs can tend to eat tinsel like spaghetti!! You can hang decoration higher on the tree and avoid chocolate tree decorations. Your pet may also get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights so consider using cable protectors. Prevent your pets from eating wrapping paper (and the presents inside!) as this can cause blockages.

Christmas trees may cause mild vomiting and/ or diarrhoea if chewed and pine needles can get stuck in paws causing irritation as well as potential

And finally, Christmas is a fun time but it can be a bit overwhelming for your pets. Keep to their routine as much as possible. Try to provide a safe and quiet escape for your pets eg a crate with a soft blanket where your pet can take themselves to. why not try a homeopathic calming remedy to help ease the tension?

Here at Barrmore Vets we have many natural treatments that may offer relief to your stressed pet. just call us on 01443 224666 or call in to speak to our trained staff who can help with your pet’s individual needs.

Cowbridge Art Society is back exhibiting at the Old Hall, with a superb range of art work on display. ‘The variety and quality of work this year is exceptional’ said co-organiser David Robinson – ‘From still life and seascapes, to landscapes, figurative work, both 2D and 3D – it’s a lovely mixture with something for absolutely everyone’.

The exhibition opened on Monday 3rd November with a prizegiving ceremony attended by guest judge Schmoo and the Deputy Mayor of Cowbridge, Malcolm wilson. one prize, however, was not awarded that night – the Visitors’ Choice Award. That will be decided by you, the general public, when you come to visit!

The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm, with the final day on Saturday 13th December.

If you’re looking for a unique Christmas present, something to cheer up your home, or just some creative inspiration, do come along and visit – there’s a warm welcome to all. There’s also a raffle, in which you can win one of two Christmas hampers or a beautiful painting by jan K. williams.

Cowbridge Art Society meet on Monday evenings in term time, with artist demonstrations, workshops and lectures on art history. Yearly and termly memberships are available, as well as a drop-in rate of £5 per session. further details on facebook (@ cowbridgeart.cas), Instagram (@cowbridgeartsociety) or via email: cowbridgeartsociety@icloud.com.
