2013: the year in review
The year of twerking, tweeting and touchdowns has come to a close. Looking back, a lot of exciting things happened in 2013; here is a quick recap of the big events from the year.

Miley Cyrus’s year to shine On June 25, the Chicago hockey team had a record comeback against the Boston Bruins, giving them the 2013 NHL Championship title. In the last 76 seconds of the game, the Hawks scored twice, only 17 seconds apart, giving them the win. The final score was 3-2.

It all started with her new do — Miley Cyrus chopped all her hair off and bleached it. Then as a debut off her new album, her singles “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” hit the radio stations, along with a very promiscuous video. If that didn’t have people talking enough, Cyrus’s appearance at the MTV Music Awards with Robin Thicke included a lot of twerking and tongue-faces.

Flanagan becomes ISU’s 18th President Although our beloved Bowman stepped down as president after spring semester, Timothy Flanagan took his place, becoming ISU’s 18th President. Coming from Framingham State University, his previous experience was evident. Flanagan started the semester off strong by making appearances at many school events and introducing himself to as many people as possible. Flanagan also makes sure to bring his wife, Nancy around campus, proving to students that the Flanagans are the new face of the University.

On April 15, two bombs interrupted the annual Boston Marathon at approximately 2:49 p.m. on Boylston Street. Three were killed during this tragedy, and an estimated 264 were injured from the explosives. While the bombs were only a mere 13 seconds long, the attack scared the entire United States population. After much investigation, the FBI determined that brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were guilty of the bombing, and Tamerlan was killed in a fight with the police.
Renovated Hancock open Construction on the football stadium was finally completed this fall, opening up a whole new set of home bleachers and additional concessions for students, faculty and staff. MTV’s ‘16 and Pregnant’ reducing teen pregnancy M
birth control and abortion, which it did. They also checked to see whether certain areas with higher viewings related to a reduction in teen births; it did as well. “The results of our analysis indicate that exposure to ‘16 and Pregnant’ was high and that it had an influence on teens’ thinking regarding birth control and abortion,” the researchers explained. They also stated that the tweets would say things such as, “This reminds me to take my birth control” or “Watching 16 & Pregnant, going to take my birth control.” Kearny explained that the show might have influenced young girls to be more cautious about pregnancy since it shows the unpleasant attributes to being in that position. “Shows that make it clear how hard it can be ... affect girls who might not care otherwise,” she said. “You see she’s fighting with her boyfriend on a daily basis. She’s gaining weight. Her friends are partying without her,” Kearny explained. “I think the takeaway here is that media can be, and often is, a force for good. We have always viewed these particular shows as sex education for the 21st century,” he added. It’s interesting to see the media having a positive influence on viewers, when in so many other cases it seems to be negative. And while “16 and pregnant” may not be the most intelligent show out there, it is nice to see it making some sort of a difference.
any believe that certain TV shows dealing with teen pregnancy may have a bad influence on young girls. However, according to a study done by the National Bureau of Economic Research recently reported that the MTV reality show “16 and Pregnant” 5.7 percent reduction in teen births during the 18 months after its premiere. According to CNN.com, researchers of the study Melissa Kearny and Phillip Levine concluded that this would account for the one-third decline of teen birth in the United States during that time. The show made its premiere in June 2009, and every episode features the story of one teen girl going through her pregnancy. It also takes the audience inside the relationship between her and her baby’s father, family and friends. There have been several criticisms of the show glamorizing teen pregnancy. According to Parents Television Council Director Melissa Henson, “Instead of really helping viewers understand the day-to-day responsibilities of attending to a new infant — scrubbing poop stains or spit-up out of clothing — or dwelling on the ‘mundane,’ MTV chooses to focus on the girls’ volatile relationships with the babies’ fathers or their new body piercings and tattoos.” In order to get the statistics of fewer birth rates, Kearny and Levine looked at Nielsen ratings, and search data from Google Trends and Twitter. According to CNN.com, the researchers analyzed geographic data so they could see if the locations with higher search activity and tweets about the show showed higher levels of searches and tweets about

Do you think MTV’s “16 and Pregnant” has a postive or negative influence on its viewers?
More research before legalization of marijuana happy faces of people that looked as though they had finally won a hard fought revolution. MY VIEW Nick Ulferts Columnist
Over holiday break I visited some family in Colorado, and while there, I was fortunate enough to witness one of the most momentous events in recent history; the legalization of recreational marijuana in that state. While I did not participate in the festivities, I did see the long lines that stretched far out the doors to the dispensaries and the
Colorado and Washington are thus far the only states that have legalized the use of recreational marijuana. While not all counties support the use and still deem it illegal, many parts of Colorado are littered with dispensaries, and it seems like only a matter of time before it’s fully statewide. The drug has very much taken root and could very well become a common pastime for many people. It seems nationwide, the perception of marijuana has begun to change. Illinois has recently joined the growing list of states that have legalized medical marijuana, though likely a year will pass before it is actually implemented. Still, with Colorado and Washington paving the way for recreational use, and nearly half of the country already legalizing its medical use, it seems reasonable to think that within this decade recreational use could become legalized
throughout more states. While some may be excited about this prospect, I can’t help but wonder if our nation may be rushing this process. While the tax dollars that could be gained, as well as the incarceration costs that could be saved are undoubtedly appealing, there is still so much in the unknown when it comes to the health effects of marijuana. The positive effects of marijuana are still widely debated, though there is some general consensus. The drug is most often prescribed to treat patients needing pain relief or to stimulate diet. Some of the more radical claims, such as the belief that marijuana can kill cancer cells, are still under scrutiny. However, there are enough benefits that some doctors prescribe it, and there are many that would testify to its effectiveness. Despite these health benefits, there are plenty of reasons to wonder if the risks outweigh them. The Food and Drug Administration has yet to deem marijuana as medicine due to these severe health concerns. According to the National Institute on
Drug Abuse’s website, “[Marijuana] impairs short-term memory and motor coordination; slows reaction time; alters mood, judgment, and decisionmaking; and in some people can cause severe anxiety (paranoia) or psychosis (loss of touch with reality). And marijuana is addictive…” Of course, there are also studies that have linked marijuana to impairing brain functions, damaging memory, having negative effects on offspring and even causing cancer. However, these reports seem to differ and are in no way conclusive. Several different reports, whether they support the use of the drug or not, seem to often have a bias which can skew facts as well. However, it is because of all these conflicting reports that makes the legalizing of recreational marijuana, or even medicinal, so perplexing. Should such legislation be passed when there is still so much that isn’t certain? Until there are more unbiased reports on the effects of marijuana that can create some kind of consensus, it seems that even the

status of medicinal marijuana should be much more dubious. Our country is still a long ways from widespread legalization of marijuana. Depending on the success of the markets in Colorado and Washington, some other states may be tempted but there is still too much to sort out. The debate as to the effects on drivers and children alone will likely stall the process for some time. And perhaps that is a good thing. For a drug that is seeing more legal use, there is still much research that needs to be done before we fully understand what exactly this drug does and doesn’t do. The fact that the FDA has yet to recognize it as a form of medicine supports this. Time will show us some of these effects in the states of Colorado and Washington, but until then a push for more research and studies needs to occur. the top Book-to-movie films to be released in 2014 five 2 “The Monuments Men” 1 “The Fault in Our Stars”
This very popular book by John Green tells the story of 16-year-old Hazel, who has been battling stage four cancer and is clinically depressed. She begins going to a weekly support group and meets Augustus Waters, a fellow cancer patient. Their love story unfolds and the book has had critics and readers raving. Since this book hit the shelves, fans have been hoping for a movie to be released, and in June of 2014 their wish will come true.
Written by Robert M. Edsel and based on a true story, this book takes place during WWII when a special force of American and British men risked their lives in Europe to save art and culture that was being destroyed by Hitler and the Nazi army. The film will hit theaters in 2014 with an All-Star cast including Matt Damon and George Clooney.
3“Gone Girl”
The book by Gillian Flynn tells the story of Nick and Amy Dunne, a married couple who were about to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary when Amy went missing. This book is a mystery and thriller and although signs point to Nick Dunne, it is hard to figure out if he is really the killer. This suspenseful book has received positive feedback from The New York Times, People Magazine, TIME and many other critics. The movie, starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, will be released in October 2014.
4 “The Giver”
This novel by Lois Lowry was published in 2002, and you may have read it in grade school. This is the story of a boy named Jonas who is living in a perfect world where there is no war or pain and everything is peaceful. As Jonas gets older he gets called for training by the Giver, who knows the story of the past and the violence it holds. The movie, starring Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Alexander Skarsgard, and Taylor Swift, will be out in August 2014.

5 “A Long Way Down”
This book by New York Times bestselling author, Nick Hornby, was published in 2006. This is a story of four different people who come together on New Year’s Eve. Each character has a different story, from former TV talk show host, to musician, teenage girl and mother. All four characters find themselves on the roof of Topper’s house, a famous place in London where people often jump to their death. The book tells their stories and challenges and has received many positive reviews. The movie will in theaters in March 2014.

Wear them with boot liners, a matching sweater and pearls for a cozy and practical outfit. Although it’s always a popular winter look, layering button ups under sweaters seems to be especially prevalent for 2014 but not in the stuffy, conservative way we’re all used to. This ever-present style is currently about changing it up and making the look your own. Layer stripes under polka dots or put plaid under leopard print. Roll your sleeves and flip up your cuffs. Layer necklaces or rock an arm stack. Don’t let the freezing air cramp your style or allow after Christmas shopping drain your bank account. Take full advantage of the cozy new trends and find fun ways to use your old items.

If you’re feeling extra fabulous, a faux fur coat is always a show-stopper. If you’re not a fan of fuzz, but are still striving for a cozy look, shop no further – puffy vests are officially back in the picture. Steal the five-year-old puffer your mom still has in the closet and throw it over a pleasantly textured sweater or a chambray. Five ‘Paranormal Activity’ CBS renews daytime shows, includmovies, one too many Kelsey Stiegman Reporter It has been said by many that the “Paranormal Activity” films are the scariest movies ever made. As a horror film watcher extraordinaire, I strongly disagree. However, I do appreciate the films, and I will admit that I’ve attended a couple of midnight showings. The film style is very unique and the producers have a wonderfully effective way of building tension and creating fear, which is what we pay for, after all. That being said, the most recent installment of the Paranormal Activity series, “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” didn’t live up to the high standards the other films have set. The movie wasn’t as slow-moving as they usually are and the angle of the movie was quite interesting. But there were so many unanswered questions that afterwards I was just lost. The movie is supposed to be all about “the marked ones” but it never explained the situation fully. They never talked about how the mark got there or what it was created for in the first place.

Then there was another mark that wasn’t mentioned enough to mean anything and was just a knock-off of Harry Potter’s Deathly Hallows. I do appreciate the fact that the filmmakers were attempting to get away from simply scaring people silly and actually trying to focus on the story itself. But after four other
slightly confusing films set backwards and forwards in time, the plot line was so blurred that the earth-shattering realization that was supposed to occur just before the credits ended up not making any sense at all. The location also took away from the honest fear that Paranormal Activity films usually provide. The plot took place in a small apartment complex and many of the scenes were shot outdoors. If the character isn’t inside, how is the demon supposed to throw them across the room? It can’t, which makes for quite a dull 84 minutes. After watching, I was left with many lingering questions and even worse, when I went to bed that night I wasn’t at all worried that a demon was hiding under my bed waiting to eat my soul. Actually, I slept like a baby, something no one was able to do after watching the first four Paranormal Activities.

(MCT) Buoyed by double-digit ratings gains in daytime, CBS said: “Let’s make a deal.” The network determined that the price was right to renew its lineup of daytime programs, and Wednesday said that next season it would bring back “The Price is Right,” “Let’s Make a Deal,” “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and the daytime chatfest “The Talk.” CBS has boasted the top-rated slate of daytime programs for more than a quarter of a century, and this season has been no exception. Heartening fans of the beleaguered soap opera genre, CBS’ two surviving daytime dramas _ “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” _ have seen sturdy ratings growth compared with the 2012-2013 TV season. “The Young and the Restless,”

CBS had previously announced that it will also bring back “The Queen Latifah Show,” produced by Sony, for a second season.

The Purple Aces regained the lead back quickly on a 4-0 run to make the score 20-17, but a trey from Tony Wills tied the score at 20s with 11:32 left in the first period. UE took the lead right back however, before two consecutive dunks by John Jones tied the game at 26-26 a minute later. A taunting technical called on Jones’ second dunk however, would ignite the stands and trigger ISU head coach Muller to pull Jones. “I have to watch it — [Jones] doesn’t do things like that,” Muller said. “He was certainly excited about the dunk, which we want him to be excited. I didn’t take John out because he got the technical, I took him out because he got a second foul.” Baskets would continue teetertottering between the teams, but ISU would solidify the lead heading into the halftime break thanks to baskets coming from Knight, Jamaal Samuel, who connected from three-point range for the second time this season, Bobby Hunter, Lofton and Tony Wills. The Redbirds maintained a single-
digit lead throughout the first eight minutes of the second half, but the Aces would eventually cut the lead to two points, 54-52, with 11 minutes left in regulation. ISU would then extend the lead back out to 58-52 after a layup by Wills and a Hunter tip-in with just over eight minutes remaining in the second period. Similar to the cyclic theme of the first half, baskets and leads continued to be exchanged when an Evansville three-pointer with 33 seconds on the clock gave the Aces the 70-67 lead. After UE threw the ball away on an in-bounds pass, ISU’s Kaza Keane captured the loose ball and found Knight who drained a shot-beyondthe-arc to tie the game at 70 with eight seconds left, leading the teams into overtime. Each team put scores on the board to begin the overtime period, but a pair of Wills free throws and a Knight layup gave the ’Birds the 76-72 advantage with 2:47 left on the clock. UE connected on another trey to get within one point, but Lofton sank his fourth three-pointer of the night to put the Redbirds up 79-75. Again, Evansville countered with a trey of its own, but was unable to regain the lead, ultimately leading to the 79-78 ISU victory. “As a coach I always feel like we’re going to make enough plays to win,” Muller said. “I do want to give my players confidence, and when you have the momentum going into over-

New finance and planning VP named

ISU associate vice president and comptroller Greg Alt has been chosen to fill the role of interim vice president of Finance and Planning beginning Feb. 24.
ISU President Timothy Flanagan has requested Alt fill in for current interim vice president of Finance and Planning, Dan Layzell. Layzell will be leaving ISU Feb. 21 to become Vice President for Finance and Administration at Louisiana State Univer-
sity. “[Greg] has a tremendous amount of experience and is very familiar with ISU,” Layzell said. “We also have a very strong team within the Division of Finance and Planning that will help him as he moves into his new role. While Alt’s previous position primarily focused on financial operations of the University, his new position will require him to cover that in addition to handling human resources and the overall budget of the area. For the last 12 years, Alt, an ISU graduate, has also been noted as a leader in budget development, forecasting, strategic planning and several other responsibilities. “[I look forward to] continuing ISU’s success in maintaining financial stability in challenging times and in continuing on the same good work as Dan,” Alt said.
New machines land at Rec Student Fitness Center’s recent rush is combated by several new machines. kellie flahert y News Editor A variety of new equipment has arrived just in time for the beginning of the semester crowds at the Student Fitness Center (SFS). Dustin Soderman, assistant director for facilities at the Student Fitness Center, said students and members at the SFS can expect 14 new FreeMotion training machines, two additional treadmills and Matrix stairmasters. FreeMotion equipment is now located on the second floor near the stairs leading up to the track while the treadmills and stairmasters can be found on the cardio balcony near the second floor fitness studios.
“These are some of the most cutting edge pieces of strength equipment on the market today, and we want to bring that to our users,” Soderman said. Regulation rules will continue to be used by the new equipment, Soderman said. Users should be aware that the other pieces of equipment that are not free access incline to 30 degrees, which is double compared to the incline capacity of normal treadmills. FreeMotion users are encouraged to visit freemotionfitness.com for tutorials to learn how to properly use the machines and maximize the workout experience. The Redbirds will be back in action at the Pepsi Ice Center this weekend, and the Illinois State club hockey team hopes to add salt to the Wisconsin’s wound that was created Tuesday night from a basketball loss to unranked Indiana.
The first game between the Redbirds and the Badgers will at 9:10 p.m. this Friday, while 6:30 p.m. will be the start of Saturday’s game — ISU’s last home game and senior night. The senior hockey players will be introduced and thanked for their dedication to the program throughout their career at ISU. “[They] played a big part this year and we want them to experience the support of our fans at their final home game on Saturday,” ISU head coach Brian Corley said. For senior defenseman Kris Vandenberg, playing for a national championship-contending team during his senior year is a dream come true, an experience he describes as an “honor.” “Over the past five years that I’ve been here, it’s been fun to watch the organization constantly improve in every aspect, whether on or off the ice,” Vandenberg said. “This year has truly been special with how well we have been doing. You look around the locker room and every guy is buying into what we have going on.”
Vandenberg will enjoy his Senior Night game Saturday, but afterwards the focus is right back to where it has been all season — bringing home a national championship trophy. “It left a bitter taste in our mouths losing to Grand Valley in the national semi-finals last year because we were that close to achieving our ultimate goal. So the guys that returned made it a point that we wouldn’t settle for anything less than bringing home a national title this year,” Vandenberg said. Wisconsin comes to Normal with a record of 13-6-1. ISU is looking to bounce back from a loss at DePaul on Saturday which handed the ’Birds only their fourth loss of the season, perching them on a 21-4 record. The two teams have not played each other yet this season, but they do have a like opponent in Northern Michigan, which ISU has defeated

When the Bulls entered the 2004-05 NBA draft, Vice President John Paxson was in the process of gutting the team’s current roster and looking for players of his own to build around. After drafting Kirk Hinrich out of Kansas in 2003, they spent much of the 2003-04 season near the bottom of the standings, with Paxson gutting the roster and preparing to make a splash in the 2004 draft. The Bulls would go ahead and draft players from winning college programs to fill the roster with players who strive for success. Luol Deng was one of five rookies on the roster that season, but the team finished with the third best record in the East at 47-35. It became evident early that Deng was a great choice, as he developed quickly into a key piece for the team in years to come. Deng helped the Bulls to three consecutive playoff runs from 2005 to 2007, culminating with a four-game sweep of the defending World Champion Miami Heat in the first round in 2007. Luol Deng would average career highs with 18.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and a field goal percentage of 51.7 percent. He was considered among many to be the Eastern Conference’s biggest snub of the All-Star Game. Injuries would then rattle Deng’s 2007-08 season and the team’s core would begin to be broken apart. Despite this, Deng stayed in the Bulls’ plans, and after he again spent much time in a suit during the 2008-09 season, the Bulls knew they had a solid player who could do whatever it takes to help a team win. After averaging a solid 17.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and shooting 46.6 percent (all the second best of his career) while playing 70 games in the 2009-10 season, Deng made it clear he was back to his old ways. He would then flourish once again under current head coach Tom Thibodeau, as he would add a three-pointer to his repertoire, and help the Bulls, to a league-best 62 wins in the 2010-11 season, the most since Michael Jordan donned a Bulls uniform. Deng and the rest of Derrick Rose’s supporting cast would no longer be disrespected by the league, as Deng would make his first career All-Star appearance in 2012, and then again in 2013 without Rose for the whole year.
