TREND WATCH

CAMO One of the biggest trends this summer is camouflage. Seen all over the catwalks, designers are channelling their inner military, as seen here at Valentino. If you think you’ll feel like a member of the army in head to toe camo then opt for a printed jacket teamed with neutral trousers, or accessorise instead with camouflage such as a hat or bag. Street wear brands like Hype and Carhartt are the go to brands for this trend.

Neon Forget pastel colours this summer, it’s all about neon. If you’re brave enough to ditch your usual navy suit for work then look to Salvatore Ferragamo’s neon orange blazer and trousers for a statement look. However if head to toe neon isn’t really for you, then wear the trend as an accessory a la Vuitton.

Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer13

For an update on a classic summer look, follow Tommy Hilfiger in a nautical stripe ensemble. To make the look more chic than sailor, team a striped crew t-shirt with a pair of chino shorts and boat shoes. To add a touch of formality to the outfit, swap the shorts for trousers and add a blazer. To mix up the look, wear red shorts instead of navy.

‘LC: M has already contributed to the changing perception of menswear in this country’

BURBERRY SPRING/SUMMER13

or those of you that don’t know, London Collections: Men or LC: M for short, is a four day fashion event which showcases the latest in men’s fashion on the catwalk; to put it simply, London Fashion Week for men has been born. Beginning in June 2012, the biannual event brings the best in British fashion to the forefront of the industry. It emphasises the creative and commercial importance of established British brands as well as supporting emerging talent. As you may have noticed, since the launch last June, the rise in men’s fashion has been on a dramatic increase. As Dylan Jones, chair of the Menswear Committee confirms, ‘LC: M has already contributed to the changing perception of menswear in this country and our plans for the next week will hopefully build on this.’ So what are your views on menswear, do you find yourself taking more consideration over what you wear or the latest trends since the launch of LC: M?

(Dlyan Jones)

creative director, commented, ‘London is the creative heart of Burberry and our global headquarters, so we are incredibly excited to be showing our next men’s collection here.’ Add some exclusive after parties, top name brands and genius new talent to the mix, this LC: M is set to be better than ever. And if you’re not lucky enough to have snatched yourself a ticket to attend the shows in person, you will be able to watch some of the most anticipated shows live from your front room through live streaming. With Topman bringing 360 degree cameras to their shows last year, those watching at home will have a better view than those on the front row.

Starting tomorrow, Saturday 15th June, LC: M is back for another season. Showcasing the best spring/summer14 collections Britain has to offer, LC: M is set to take London by storm, again. The weekend kicks off on the Saturday with various drink receptions marking the launch of the third LC: M, whilst Sunday sees the first catwalk show. Starting with Alfred Dunhill Sunday morning and ending with Nasir Mazhar Tuesday evening, the next 4 days sees over 50 shows, presentations and events all celebrating the best in British fashion. Continuing over the weekend we see big names like Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford take to the catwalk, alongside high street favourites Topman as well as MAN the joint venture between Topman and Fashion East which supports the best in emerging talent.

With the increasing success of LC: M, men’s fashion is only set to get better. So if you want to know now what you should be wearing next summer, you best get watching.

One of the biggest names and most anticipated shows over the 4 days is the return of Burberry. After recently bringing the womenswear show back to the capital, this week sees the Burberry Prorsum menswear spring/summer14 collection back in London having spent the past decade showing in Milan. As Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief

& MAIN With London Collections: Men beginning tomorrow, this seems the perfect time to celebrate the best of British fashion. In an exclusive interview with one half of the founders, Nikhil Adwalpalkar explains more about his brand, Fourth & Main, and how he and his partner James Wright came to produce a new fashion brand with no experience in the industry, whilst taking us on a guide through the A/W13 collection

Having previously shown at LC: M, Fourth & Main are out to prove that men can wear quality products, in classic styles, whilst still being sold at an accessible price point. Fourth & Main have given classic menswear styles a contemporary twist in order to appeal to a younger generation. The brand’s goal is to produce clothing inspired by London’s creative culture, whilst selling themselves as a contemporary lifestyle brand. The brands aim is to provide a collection that allows the wearer’s creativity and individuality to shine through.

FOURTH & MAIN

NEITHER YOU NOR JAMES WRIGHT HAVE A BACKGROUND IN FASHION, SO WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY? We’ve always known what we like and found it difficult to find well made simple clothing at an accessible price point. This was the foundation we started with and we decided on the Journal as a point of difference. WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR BRAND? We wanted to introduce a contemporary audience back to classic clothing. Our goal has been to create day-to-day style solutions for men. At the same time we wanted to speak to our customers on a taste level outside of clothing, hence the Journal and online Editorial. WHAT MADE YOU DESIGN AN EXPERIENTIAL STORE WHICH INCORPORATES A BOOKSHOP AND ART GALLERY? HAS IT BEEN SUCCESSFUL? I think it adds a string to your proverbial bow, it always good to experiment with a space and see what works best. However, to be honest, we’ve found the space better used for clothing!

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR LATEST COLLECTION? A/W 13 is the first collection we’ve produced in the UK. The collection draws on classic British pieces such as Macs and Field coats and updating them for a younger audience.

WILL YOU BE EXHIBITING AT LONDON COLLECTIONS: MEN AGAIN THIS YEAR? We have shown at London Collections: Men, but we now concentrate on the international tradeshows such as Pitti Uomo in Florence and Capsule in Paris.

BRITISH MEN’S FASHION SEEMS TO BE GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH – TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THE SUCCESS? A willingness to experiment and therefore take risks. WHAT IS THE FAVOURITE PIECE IN YOUR NEW COLLECTION? Navy wool wax cotton mac.

WILL YOU BE SIGNING UP ANY NEW FOURTH & MAIN BRAND AMBASSADORS – IF SO WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL BRAND AMBASSADOR? Yes, we hope to have Ben Whishaw after his feature in Journal Issue 2.

the

shirt With the launch of Gert Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom’s Fantastic Man’s book ‘Buttoned-Up’ exploring the buttoned-up trend and the impact it has had on the commercial relevance of shirting for menswear, this seems like the perfect time to realise just how important the shirt is in every man’s wardrobe. ‘Buttoned-Up’ illustrates how a piece that is taken for granted, is now a wardrobe staple and has influenced and shaped various menswear movements. The trend of buttoning up a shirt has caused the casual shirt to become more sophisticated, giving it a smarter edge, whilst creating a more relaxed approach to formalwear by allowing for the removal of the tie and the outfit still retaining a sense of sharpness. The next few pages take you on a style guide on what shirt to wear to what occasion and what to wear it with. If you like what you see, scan the symbol and you will be taken directly to the website to buy the product. ‘Button-Up’ is available to buy from www.penguin.co.uk.
