This project was very interesting because it was with a group of six people; including two architects, two construction managers, an engineer, and a landscape architect. Working with this team made me realize and appreciate interdisciplinary cooperation. The design goal: the College of Creative Studies was divided into two parts, one public and one private. Our response was to create a continuous landscape connecting the two while providing an art gallery and an indoor amphitheater.

In order to be a silver LEED building, the windows and walls are more or less open according to the sun light: large openings on the north facade and a triangular pattern on the south.

Evolo Competition skyscraper
The skyscaper is located on the San Diego waterfront, close to downtown. The concept was to weave the city and waterfront together in differents ways using program, circulation and landscape as design tools. In order to create a Sustainable Skyscaper, we included an intelligent skin system which captures storm water, mitigates solar exposure, ventilates with fresh air, and harnesses solar energy with integrated solar panels.

Spiritual Folly

Inspired by Bernard Tschummi’s folies at Parc de La Villette, the intention of this project was to create six different buildings with varying programs that become progressively more private as they recede down the site’s major slope. At street level, there will be a restaurant, an art gallery and a theatre for everyday use; while near the bottom, there is an artist’s studio and a thermal bath. The materials for each building will be a variation of white concrete and corten steel.

The concept for this school was based on the Parisian metro line. Each of them corresponds to a specific major: photography, art and design. The created spaces were pure and meant to unleash each student’s imagination. The street was lacking green space and activation at night, so I decided to enliven the school with green space as well as have it act as a glimmering beacon to the neighborhood.

Sustainable Housing 40 apartments
This project was the residential phase of a major urban planning project during my Third year. The goal was to provide the city of Ablon, a sustainable future with increased pedestrian access and less reliance on the automobile. The complex contains 40 new apartments with handicap accessibility. Each new apartment will be modular in design, and contain a wealth of interstitial community spaces.

The pictures on the left page were from an event I put together called the SLO Bike Experience. Because such a large proportion of students in San Luis Obispo ride their bike’s to school, I wanted to coordinate this movement into a performance. By attaching found materials to each bike, the combined motion of each bike added a unique sound to the overall composition. With this event, I recorded both sound and video separately, and created a mixed media presentation. On
this page, are some examples of my interest in silver photography that I took during my time in California. The subjects are the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Architecture building at Cal Poly.

Thesis Project Seattle Waterfront
During the summer of 2011, I went on a one month roadtrip up the Pacific Northwest along the 101, from San Diego to Seattle. The intention was to find a suitable site for an American thesis project. It was a fantastic experience as the landscape was very different from what I’ve seen in Europe. After few of days in Seattle, I knew I wanted a site in this city. I really enjoyed the culture and pedestrian atmosphere of the city and noticed an empty site along the waterfront on pier 62/63. After some research, my thesis became to reconnect Seattle with its waterfront.
The city of Seattle has decided to demolish the existing Alaskan Way Viaduct, which literally divides downtown and the view of the bay. The project is to reclaim the space along the demolished viaduct, and provide the city with a promenade of entertainment and an interconnecting park. Because Seattle is referred to as the Emerald City, creating a pedestrian park seems fitting. Currently along the waterfront, there exists some tourist restaurants, an unattractive mix of programs, and a barren parking lot. The project aims to sustainably integrate landscape and program to attract its residents to the waterfront with events to bring the city to life.

Currently,
downtown Seattle is disconnected from it’s waterfront. In order to merge the city and the water together, flowing green promenades were implemented, mimicking the submarine topography while merging with the rigid and orthogonal city grid. The landscape was designed with sustainability in mind, by offering a natural refuge for wild life and regional plants, while filtering and redirecting storm-water away from the city.
In order to organize the 3km promenade, an analysis of the city was necessary. Correspondingly, each waterfront neighborhood required a regional design approach. Thus, four main themes emerged: nature, water, commercial and event concentration. The landscape master planning worked to facilitate and integrate each theme while adding additional waterfront programs pertinent to each neighborhood.

The event concentration sequence centers on Pier 48, and is in the industrial port neighborhood containing the city’s main sports stadium. This neighborhood is perfect for big festivals, and can serve various functions for any season.

The concept for Pier 62 was to merge the building’s program >with its envelop. The SW Pool acts as a reflection upon the city and water, creating a rippled transition between the two.

The water theme includes the SW pool project. This is the specific transition between the city and the water. As one walks further from the city, and more towards the water, the landscape becomes more aquatic as several pools and spas allow user participation with the ocean. The building also has an accessible green roof to fully appreciate the view over Elliott Bay.
