Artist Statement

My artistic mission is Upcycling scrap materials. Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. I name this as ‘UpcycloEnviro’. It is an investment in the future and into the creation of a greener environment. I aim to inculcate a sense of responsibility by sensitizing people in a subtle way about the environmental impact of their behaviour and how they can adopt a more environment-friendly lifestyle. This will undoubtedly broaden recycling participation in Mauritius and throughout the world through increased awareness and education by promoting the creation of artworks that will sensitize people and enable them to reduce waste. This will generate an environmental responsibility through efficient use of resources by redirecting them and giving then a life anew. It is the recycling of trash for a higher purpose. Regenerating and renewing scrap materials in order to give them a new meaning. Artistic manipulation of discarded scraps and other man made materials are an effective way of making people aware, making them environmentally awakened, and conscious. The raw materials do not have any intrinsic value but once they are processed through the creative hands of artists they become wonderful works of art. As artist, my challenge is to take these found objects which are apparently meaningless and useless and to create relationship with them, communicate with them and to give them a life, a meaning, a voice and ignite a spirit into them so that they may converse with the viewer and establish a dialogue with them. The creative hands of the artist give the discarded objects a life so that they may tell their own story. In today’s world of weird and amazing art some of the most compelling and creative works have been born out of the simplest and most abundant of materials, the trash and scraps. I have been in this demarche for more than 12 years now. I have been creating artworks out of scrap materials, using different techniques with the sole aim of sensitizing people here in Mauritius and worldwide, addressing the worsening environmental degradation and climate change. My initiative draw on the commitment to nurture innovation, pioneer new fields, expand access to and generate sustainable impact on individuals, institutions, and communities.

Quintessence 2012 Quintessence is the essence in the materials in its purest, exquisite and most concentrated form. The ancient Greeks used the term to describe a mysterious ‘fifth element’, in addition to air, earth, fire and water. My sculptures project that dynamism as they depict the pure state of the materials that I use in order to translate my ideas and feelings via my artworks. The materials, forms, colours, and textures aid to communicate much more. I believe that we humans have much more than our five senses and therefore we should not limit ourselves. We should always aim to go beyond and develop our sixth sense, that is, the sense of appreciation. Once this is developed, we could then decode the meanings and capture the real essence of what the artwork conveys. My demarche has always been for quintessential design with a broad spectrum of materials, forms, and techniques. Since the last few years I have explored the possibilities recycling of trash for a higher purpose, regenerating and renewing scrap materials in order to give them a new meaning. Re-establishing an intrinsic relationship with the discarded materials and enable them to become a vehicle for the transmission of values. It is the Artistic manipulation of discarded scraps and found objects are an effective way of making people aware and become environmentally awakened. The raw materials do not have any intrinsic value as such but once they are processed through the creative hands of artists they become wonderful works of art. As an artist my challenge is to take these scraps and found objects which are apparently meaningless and useless; create a relationship with them and enable them to become the messiahs’ of peace and reflection. These days it has become crucial to make each and everybody reflect and reconsider on our actions, as our natural resources are being depleted unprecedently. Irreparable harms are being inflicted in the planet in which we are living. As an Artist I feel that artworks are indeed the means of communication. The imagination and creativity of the artists will definitely ignite a spirit into them and enable them to narrate a story of their own. Quintessence is the pure essence of the most perfect embodiment of my artworks. It encompasses a wide class of possibilities with an exotic kind of energy that brings together all the fundamental forces.

I behold the insatiable quest to reach for the highest. I want to range on the top as a highly successful artist. I had been very active in my artistic life, having 3 major solo exhibitions and multiple other duo and group exhibits. My artworks are all throughout the world, Mauritius, Belgium, Switzerland, to name a few. I am now working as Lecturer at the Mauritius Institute of Education [MIE]. My inspiration sources and aims has always been shaped and molded according to what is required. I don’t believe in being rooted into a single media and restrict myself to creativity. Art is present everywhere and in everything. It is sufficient to open one’s eyes and one’s inherent artistic quest. Everyday I reflect and aim to face the realities of life in an artistic, aesthetic and heroic way. I implement new means and medium to revive, to surprise, invigorate and share my creative inertia to the world. I aim to alleviate the social, moral, political upheavals of the world and to be knowledge and values of our society. Besides creating Artworks, I do teach. Teaching, making projects together with eager younger humans is the most alive dialog I have ever experienced. I see in front of my eyes, inside my heart, that the experiences, knowledge and passion that I try to transmit, penetrate the evolving abilities of the others. Incorporated with their thirsty talents something new is born. This has a boomerang effect to me. It gives me great pleasure, and inspiration, and desire to transmit more.
