COLLEGE BASKETBALL Former Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez arrested NEWARK, N.J. — Former Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez is in trouble again. Fired in March for his antics on and off the court, Gonzalez has been arrested on charges of shoplifting from a New Jersey mall. Gonzalez, 47, reported to Millburn police headquarters on Monday. He faces charges of criminal mischief, along with shoplifting. He is accused of taking a satchel worth roughly $1,400 from the Polo Ralph Lauren store in the Short Hills Mall on June 29. He plans to plead not guilty, said defense attorney Gerald Krovatin, who also is representing Gonzalez in a lawsuit over his dismissal. He called the accusations a miscommunication and a series of misunderstandings. A spokeswoman for the Essex County prosecutor’s office says the shoplifting charge is a third-degree offense punishable by up to five years in jail.

NBA Clippers reach deal with Del Negro to coach

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Clippers reached an agreement in principle with Vinny Del Negro to become the team’s head coach. The team said Tuesday night in an e-mail that more details would be announced today. Del Negro was fired by the Chicago Bulls in May after going 82-82 in two seasons and making two postseason appearances. Mike Dunleavy quit as Clippers coach in early February to focus exclusively on his general manager duties, then he and the team severed ties completely on March 8. His assistant, Kim Hughes, finished the season as interim coach before being dismissed on April 15.

NFL Jim Brown appeals lawsuit dismissal SAN FRANCISCO — NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown is asking a San Francisco appellate court to overturn a federal judge’s decision to dismiss his lawsuit against video game maker Electronic Arts. Brown filed the request Tuesday with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He argues U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper was erroneous when ruling in September that Electronic Arts was protected by First Amendment rights when it created a character similar to Brown for its Madden NFL video games.
