Complete Nutrition for Women Vitamins and Supplements to Promote Health

ith so many different choices in the vitamin aisle, many women find it difficult to choose the right ones to fit their personal needs. As a woman, keeping your body healthy is an important task. Whether you are in your child-bearing years, taking folic acid for a healthy baby, or in your post-menopausal years, taking extra calcium for healthy bones, there are various vitamins for women to consider at every stage of life.

A Daily Regimen It’s no secret that the use of vitamins has become a common act for most people. In fact, a recent Gallup poll found that 54 percent of women take a vitamin on a daily basis. If your intention is to prevent disease, such as cancer or osteoporosis, or you just want to fill in nutrition gaps not covered in your daily diet, the reasons for taking vitamins and their many different forms are endless.

Trends in Women’s Nutrition From TV talk shows to the local nightly news programs, the public is never at a loss for nutritional information targeted toward women. Use this list of some of the popular vitamins and supplements that have recently made headlines to help you decide whether they fit into your health and wellness regimen. • Multivitamins While most of the nutrients contained within multivitamins can be found in food, taking one daily can fill in any missing gaps. A daily multivitamin can satisfy all of your daily nutrition needs. When shopping for the right product, note that not all multivitamins are created equal. Some varieties offer a different amount of nutrients targeted to a specific age group or function. • Omega-3 supplements Perhaps one of the most talked about nutrition products on the market, omega-3 fish oil supplements have been praised by various health professionals for their heart health benefits. Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One product, Nature’s Bounty Odorless Fish Oil 1000 mg Dietary Supplement Softgels, provides a special coating to minimize the unfavorable aftertaste often associated with such pills. • Vitamin D While many people obtain vitamin D through exposure to natural sunlight, it can also be found in small increments in fatty fishes and in fortified dairy and cereal products. Supplements of both vitamin D3 (at 700-800 IU/day) have been shown to reduce the risk of bone loss and fractures in elderly people aged 62-85 years. For those looking for a convenient way to get the vitamin D needed for optimal health, try the Finest Nutrition Vitamin Dietary Supplement or Dr. Mercola® Sunshine Mist Spray. 36

• Calcium To keep bones healthy and strong throughout life, your body requires calcium. This bone-strengthening nutrient reduces the risk of developing osteoporosis. To increase your calcium intake, try the 600 mg of Calcium with a Vitamin D Dietary Supplement, to provide help promote calcium absorption. • Folic acid A nutrient commonly taken by women who are pregnant or who wish to become pregnant, folic acid is known to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida in babies. For those looking to improve their health and wellbeing, a general understanding of the many uses for vitamins and supplements may just be their own personal key to longevity.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

Quiescence: The Quiet Quest

T Artwork by Barry Farber

here is something fascinating about a great blue heron and how it hunts for its prey. It stands still for long periods of time and suddenly explodes with a thrust of its beak to catch a fish. The blue heron is calm, patient, intelligent, present, determined and resourceful. We can learn a lot from nature.

There is value in keeping still and really listening to what someone is saying, not just hearing their words, but recognizing the expressions and enthusiasm in their message. A big portion of my business involves helping clients gain access to high level contacts in a variety of industries. I challenge sales teams to put together a top 20 target account list. When working with some of the reps, I tell them we are going to call on the president and CEO of large companies and they look at me like I’m a little crazy. The key to this approach is in the research that happens before we make the call along with the ability to get the person to talk while you listen. Recently I worked with a sales rep and went to an office building with many companies. Before every call we research the name of the company, the CEO and anything else about the company that we think will be helpful. We made seven calls and met with seven owners, partners and presidents. Very rarely do we go seven for seven, but nobody calls the top level because they think the executives are unreachable. On the fourth call, we walked in and asked for the CEO by name. We did our research and knew his background. The CEO came out and the first thing I said was how impressive his ten rules for success are, pointing out a few of them on the wall where they were hanging

with the company’s mission statement. I told him the rule I liked best was the one about listening to employees and customers. He was proud of that list and started telling Barry Farber us how he did that many years ago. He was passionate about his business and we listened with genuine interest. Then After a few minutes he asked the question that anyone should ask when two people come in unannounced: “And why are you here?” I simply told him I do consulting work for an IT and Document Management company. My sales rep said, “We research the companies we approach and tell them about how we might add value to their company. We were impressed with the work you do and the article we read about you in a local business journal.” The CEO smiled and continued talking about some of the work they were doing in Paterson and about the amazing the history of that town. Because he was so passionate about his work, we caught his enthusiasm. Of course you can fake interest in someone’s work to be courteous, but there was no faking here. He was really interesting and exciting to listen to. We remained quiet and listened for 85% of the visit. At the end, he introduced the sales rep to the person in charge of their office equipment and said with a smile, “I’m not very happy about our current equipment. Maybe you can do something about that?”

“When everything is moving and shifting, the only way to counteract chaos is stillness. When things feel extraordinary, strive for ordinary. When the surface is wavy, dive deeper for quieter waters.” -Kristin Armstrong

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers to help them market their products and gain access to new business. He is the best-selling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold.
