MY PICKS...

Editors Note

W

ell I’m still the Editor. The last year has flown by for me and putting this together has all been practice and a huge learning curve to get this mag to where it is now. Thanks for letting me do this role again. As long as the organising committee keep putting on great events that you attend, I should have some content to publish! You won’t find Daryl in this edition - he’s had his run! - I hope you managed to spot all 10 of him in the last edition. What you will spot though is support from a new advertiser. VW Heritage. A big thanks for coming on board and getting behind us West Aussies - I can say that now, as I just became a Citizen of this wonderful country! Thank you to all those that replied and sent in answers to the “Members Profile” I have included two. I will keep the others up my sleeve for future editions. Keep them coming.

Mandoon

Dwellingup

Mandurah to Mindarie

We have a new look calendar based on some feedback, Thanks Kim for the idea. Yet another photo heavy edition - if you see any pics of you or your vehicle that you would like, drop me an email and I will happily pass them on.

Jamie Barrett

Memberships are at 135. For this time of year it’s awesome - and actually a record! The prompt renewal process and people having the ability to pay directly into the club account has been wonderful. A BIG Welcome to all the new members and people that will be receiving this magazine for the first time.

Remember this is an outlet for you to show others and us your vehicle(s) and tell your stories. Jan Ahearn New Membership Officer

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, The AGM was last week and I am pleased to announce that we have new members on the club committee - In no particular order - John Hornby, Janice Ahearn, Ida Holm and Lewis Mill. Thank you so much for coming on board and hope that you can bring some fresh ideas and also help spread the load. A big thank you to the outgoing committee members who have chosen to have a break from formalities - On behalf of the club I thank you for all your help and contributions. It was a great night and I am pleased that I left the VW at home so I could raise a glass or two. As proud as I am to be President again I was hoping someone would put their hand up and grab the spot. Its not too late to get involved though so don’t use that as an excuse! For other events over the last couple of months they were all a fantastic success! The weather forecasts were so wrong - If I took them seriously I would have been put off going as rain and storms were predicted for nearly all of the dates we had events on. Yes it was a bit muddy but the kids loved the puddles especially at the Dwellingup camp over. The new club trailer has arrived! It is much more secure, lighter, safer and more professional than the old one. We are working on designs for the art on the doors as they are flat and suitable for vinyl wrapping. You can have a close up look at this years Day of the Volkswagen. The old trailer is up for sale and we want to offer this to members first so get in touch with Dave Moore for details.

Finally what a pleasure it was to hand over a cheque to Save our Sons Charity. I met with young Logan Bayley who thankfully accepted it on behalf of the charity. The club donated $5,000 to this great cause from funds generated from the late Ross Booths’ Estate.

How long have you had a passion for VWs Always had an affection for them from when I was a young kid. Still have the red and yellow corgi beetle I had all those years ago. What got you into VWs I’ve always loved hotrods, and had an interest in vws. I’m a late starter, getting my first in my mid 20s, with my VWRX being my first real vw based project when I was 28. Best VW you have ever owned My 1956 beetle, although think memories are fonder with my 1958 beetle I left in Darwin.

ay of the Volkswagen will be at the same venue as last year with a couple of subtle changes. The theme is based around the Unique Australian Country Buggy. We’ll be celebrating 60 years of it. With some great examples on display on the day. This vehicle was initially designed for the military so we are loosely basing the theme around the Army too, so get creative with the displays around your vehicle and your attire.

W

e have decided to strip back the way trophies are distributed and go for a broader approach. Everyone who attends will be up for nomination and a prize. Vehicles will not be judged in the same format as previous years. This will benefit us all and make for a smoother entry and vehicle parking.

T

o help us please don’t arrive before 8am as the roads are small and we don’t want to block up the popular beach area. Remember that this is a static car show. Once you enter and park you are not permitted to move your vehicle until the show is declared over at around 2pm.

W T

e are planning some fun activities for your pleasure. More food choices too. We are right next to the beach so bring a towel....

With the threat of bad weather

DWELLINGUP CAMPOUT

there was some indecision about the Dwellingup weekend going ahead. Jamie and I were desperate to go and we had everything packed and ready to leave after work on the Friday. But the weatherman was promising bad weather with high winds and as the rain started we begrudgingly spent the evening on the couch watching the football.

words images JAN AHEARN JAMIE BARRETT

When we woke up on the Saturday the rain was consistent but we bit the bullet and jumped in Micro and headed south, thinking the worse case scenario would be that it may just be a day trip. We met up with Andrew & Jo in Maid Marion at North Dandalup and drove in convoy through the rain from there. We arrived late morning and were greeted by some hardy newcomers. John in his Syncro, Dean & Jo with their gorgeous girls

DWELLINGUP CAMPOUT

Zalia & Izzy and Tony & June both in their very rare (for Australia) Hymer Motorhomes. Tina & Dave arrived shortly after us, followed by Gmac. We set up our camp, dodging a few showers and made a fire. After some lunch Liz & Thor joined us for the afternoon with little

Finn who spent nearly all of his time in the puddles. We had awnings and a gazebo so when the odd shower came through we were able to shelter easily. Jamie and I went for a walk to take some photos. The bush was beautiful. Fresh and green from the rain with plenty of wattles in bloom. The river was the highest

we’ve seen it, racing over the rocks. The kangaroos were indifferent to us being there and we were able to get quite close to capture some nice pictures of them.

John in his Syncro earned the

name Generous John as he was forever producing something homemade or home brewed to share with us. Not to mention the many bags of firewood he bought along. The Hymer’s created a lot of interest. There are only 5 in Australia with 3 of them here in WA. So we were lucky to have two in the same spot. They were both kitted out very well with hot showers and comfy beds. The fire was a good excuse to pull out the camp ovens. Tina, Jo & Andrew all impressed us with their cooking skills.

The evening was spent around the campfire telling stories, playing games and drinking way too much of John’s home brewed Orahovica, a Croatian delight.

DWELL CAMP The Kangaroos became pretty bold after dark, coming into the camp to see what they could scrounge. We managed a few hours around the fire before the rain settled in and we called it a night. Sunday morning saw the sun peeking through the pines and our awning full of water after some heavy falls overnight. John cooked up some breakfast to share then he had to make an early departure due to a sporting commitment. The rest of us pottered around making the most of the outdoors before packing up and heading home. We had a great weekend and felt lucky to meet some lovely new people.

OUT & ABOUT IN CRYSTAL

On a weekend there is nothing I like more than jumping into Crystal, our 1963 restored (yes she is finished) Splitscreen Kombi and going for a drive. I couldn’t care less where we get to... it’s the journey that counts. Along the way (or at the destination) I often come across things that I thought I’d share and perhaps you might be interest in - A sort of Spotto section. Over the last few months we have been hitting the roads around the river and the second hand shops around town. One Sunday cruising down the Esplanade I passed a stretched Kombi. I was quick to chuck a U Turn and park up next to what I learned was a Subaru powered rig. It is finished off really well and is available for hire. The interior was very neat and has aircon! It will definitely turn heads and get booked up for events.

While at Blue Bird Vintage, the shop(s) with all sorts of coolness inside, we found this old school Manx remote control Buggy - box ‘n all, and we didn’t buy it. So if you’re keen, get on down and buy yourself an early Christmas present!

Spotted this very well loved Beetle in a carpark around Myaree - loved those eye lids and smoothies on the wheels

I went along to a Custom Cars and Coffee event - boy they are getting a big turnout nowadays..... including many (and these) VeeDubs. Lowered and pimped Godfather Golfwagen. A lovely Square Back sporting a very cool number plate. A very clean Whale Tail Carrera kit on the Beetle and very very tidy Karman Ghia with modded engine and a beautiful paint job. Spot ya next time, when I’m OUT & ABOUT IN CRYSTAL Jamie.

S

unday 16th July was a perfect day for a cruise. The ‘Winter Sun Beer Run’ saw only a few clouds, and earlier showers cleared for us.

A

fter a meet up in Kalamunda we drove down the Zig Zag in Gooseberry Hill. Some great views from the old railway line although the last corner was pretty tight - normally the power steering makes it easier but who knew that an Amarok would need a three point turn? We continued on toward Alfred’s but had an impromptu photo call with a freight train that slowed us down a bit.

here was a good crowd waiting at Alfred’s for part two which was a run through the Swan Valley. - Strange seeing Alfred’s in the daylight (a good time for reflection).

T

he roads were fairly clear this allowed us to build up a good convoy and park up together in front of the vines at the Mandoon Estate. Luckily, the winery offered us a separate room for the club so we didn’t have to brave the beer garden in the wind. The beers from Homestead Brewery went down well as did the lunch. After the photos most people headed home to watch the Derby (enough said). It was good to see the new members (and their rides) out for the run – hope to see everyone at the next one!

CRUISE

C

ruising the coast from Mandurah all the way up to Mindarie. The long line of Volkswagens certainly turned heads and got plenty of attention a long the way....

W

ith the meeting points spread out along the planned route, it gave us an opportunity to re group, chat and also a place for others to join in the cruise. Mandurah was the start followed by Rockingham. Thor led the way in his Syncro. I joined in at the Fremantle car park after dropping Jan off at the overpass foot bridge (photo opportunity) in Mosman Park. I pulled into the Captain Munchies carpark just as the Southerners did. This was already looking like decent numbers to cause some congestion on the already busy roads. We had Buggies, Beetles, Kombis, Type3, Utes, Water cooled, and even a Ferrari that dropped in for a look. We had to cut the chat short to get on the road and leave at the predetermined time. We departed en masse and were quickly split up as the convoy was invaded by “normal cars.

J

an was up on the foot bridge to get some aerial shots of us cruising past, unfortunately not in the long VW groups we had planned. There was a small diversion in Cottesloe for a surf event but we raced up to Trigg where we had a bigger stop and were joined by some others including Kim Shurman. Surfers and beach goers were suddenly surrounded by us. With the sun out it was a great stop and an opportunity for more pictures and a chat.

Kim gave the instructions and thanks talk to us all before we travelled the last (and my favourite) part of the suburbs coast line. We left the Trigg area and headed north again on the West Coast Hwy, hugging the ocean. The weather and our speed were perfect conditions to have the front safaris windows open. We bunched back up along the way

and pulled into the Mindarie Quay all together, where we filled up the trailer bays at the top of the carpark. We had the opportunity to have a good look around all the vehicles and sell a few of the new Country Buggy themed Day of the Volkswagen T-Shirts before we had some well earned food and drink in the Mindarie Pub right on the water front.

ork has progressed with the front inner wheel arches being repaired followed by fitting of replacement funky green outer sills supplied by Classic Fab. These repairs were then sandblasted (Dave tells me this is worst, slowest, noisy and dusty pain of a job) along with the front and rear inner wheel arches and inner cargo area side panels.

Sandblasted bare metal

All the sandblasted areas were then epoxy primed.

Dave took a break from the body work and sandblasted, primed and painted the beam with two pac epoxy primer, then satin black 2pac.

The replacement cargo floors were fitted and primed.

I never did get back to the paint stripping - life has been too busy - Dave tells me he is about half way with the welding and metal work.
