Page 15 case of the CLS Mercedes when it was released and so it is again the case with the Passat CC – short for Comfort Coupe. Both are beautiful looking cars and like the VW Corardo should stand the test of time. The Passat CC is offered with either a 125kw 2.0 TDi engine, or a 220kw 3.6 V6 with 4Motion. Both produce 350 NM of torque and only come with the 6 speed DSG. While one always hopes for the top of the range to try out, previous testers had spoilt the party, so

A Rose Among Thorns Review by Rod McSwain I stepped onto the train at 6:30 AM and sat next to and greeted a businessman. All I got back was a g‟day mate. It seemed he didn‟t want to talk and as I looked around, I noticed how most of the other people on the train looked a pretty morbid lot. Most of them sat reading a book, struggling with the paper, or just staring out the window wondering where on earth they were going in life. It was a sunny morning and the Canning River was like glass. It looked a picture. At least there was something to make them feel good about being alive. But as the train progressed toward the CBD, it dawned on me how most of us are in a rut - same people getting on at the same station and sitting in generally the same seat and wearing a dull grey or black uniform. A few construction workers wore bright

yellow jackets. Oh!! How we are creatures of habit. But when a fresh faced, well groomed, curvaceous, twenty something year old lady in a pastel coloured outfit stepped onto the train with ticket in hand (the usuals use a smartrider), most male eyes gave her a good once over. Her partner boarded behind her and they managed to find 2 seats together further down the carriage. All eyes then reverted back to what they were doing before.

the diesel was the only option. As I pulled out onto the street, the Mocca coloured CC blended in with the morning convoy towards the CBD. But the shadow it produced was unique, it was head turning, it was striking and if I got $1 for everyone who looked at it for more than a fleeting glance when I pulled up at traffic lights in the centre of the city, I just about could have retired. At least I now have a fraction of an idea of how the driver of a Lamborghini feels.

I peered out the train window again and began counting the cars on the freeway that we were passing. It was then I noticed just how plain boring they all were to look at, as if they came out of the same mould and were rounded by passers by. Just like what the passengers on the train were wearing compared to the new passenger. They were Grey, white, silver and black.

I didn‟t realise the CC is a 4 seater and the doors are all pillarless, but each occupant is well looked after in the standard equipped car with heated seats, air conditioning controls, courtesy lighting and plenty of legroom. The driver has more than is required to make it an effortless drive. The key slots into the dash for a push start / stop, the seat are electrically adjustable with 3 memories, the suspension But occasionally and despite the col- can be set for comfort, normal or sport our, one will stand out. mode depending on your driving conditions, but the endearing feature is the ability of the CC to entice you to drive sedately and actually enjoy the drive. Daytime running lights, auto wipers and bi-xenon headlights that turn laterally as you turn the wheel, hill hold, self sealing tyres and VW‟s standard equipment of 8 air bags surrounding you, ESP, ABS, EBD, ASR all go a long way to setting new standards that you would usually expect in the so called exotic marques, but that have already and will continue to filter across the Volkswagen range over time. The optical parking system gives you a visual of how close the car is to anything, or anything is to the car, including small children. As good as it is, even the much higher priced CLS Mercedes doesn‟t come with many of the standard features of the CC. The optional Adaptive Cruise Control - ACC goes a long way to avoiding crashes by automatically slowing the car down if the vehicle in front slows and the Park Assist will help you squeeze into that tight parking spot with ease.

direct injected diesel is running. But put pedal to the metal and you might hear the whistle of the turbo while reaching the 110 kph limit on the open road. The claimed top speed of over 200 kph suggests I should go back to Germany and cruise the Autobahns again. The 2.0L is not quick taking 8.6 sec to get to 100kph, but based on my test and an economy of 6.0l /100klm, the 68 litre tank gives the CC a

Volkswagen must be congratulated for bringing available technology into production as soon as it does. There is too much to mention in any road test report, particularly this one, but you only need to have a look at the amount of information in the numerous sections of the handbook that range in excess 1100 klm, – 3 tanks Perth to Bendigo ….. comes with the CC. easy! …. and it emits just 166g of CO2 per klm. Driving the CC is effortless. The steering gives you good But a test is done on the road under every day conditions, feedback through the 235/40 x 18‟s and the all round indeso after covering 650 klm of freeway, stop/start metro, pendent suspension, but you are unsure at times that the open road and the rolling and twisty hills of the Darling Scarp, I clocked up 15 hours and 10 minutes behind the wheel and as mentioned, returned an impressive 6.0 litres per 100klm. But the biggest shock was on a run back from Pinjarra Road to South Street in Murdoch (about 70 klm) on the new freeway extension. Using cruise control, the CC sipped an average of just 4.2 litres per 100klm. Now that‟s impressive. To sum up the CC, I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable cars I have driven and from around $55,000 to drive it away, this is a vehicle that is nowhere near as expensive as it looks.

CLUB RUN - 18th OCTOBER 2009 Anniversary Kruize This year the Anniversary Kruize was based in the Swan Valley using the “Great Valley Rally” designed by the SWAN VALLEY AND EASTERN REGION VISITOR CENTRE. The rally design is for a great „family day out‟ but well written and takes you to some areas of the Swan Valley you may not visit normally. The numbers of participants was unfortunately low even though the weather was great. The club is always looking for feedback on these organised events and if members are voting with their feet

by not attending, the club would like to know what type of event members are interested in? However, those that did come along enjoyed it immensely and even hinted that they may use it for other groups they are part of. Well here are some photos of the area and those that did come along for a bit of fun.

New Golf GTI More than three decades after a small band of engineers started work on the first prototype Golf GTI, the very latest evolution and sixth generation of the original hot hatch has arrived. The original Golf GTI was planned as a limited series of 5,000 cars. Since then – and five generations of GTI later – more than 1.7 million have been sold worldwide. The elements of the original GTI remain; sharp dynamics, a responsive four-cylinder engine and driver involvement are at the core of the new GTI. Yet it has evolved – the Golf GTI generation VI is faster and more powerful than any standard GTI before it. However, the day-to-day usability of the GTI has not been forgotten and it

There are still 44,540 of them on the streets in Germany – it runs and runs and runs. This information was provided by the VDA (Automotive Manufacturer‟s Association in Germany). A total of 15.8 million of the attractive two-door car were manufactured in the period from 1938 to 1980 in Wolfsburg, Emden and Osnabrück. Of this, 330,000 were Cabriolets, which was the classic dream car right from the start. In 2009 Volkswagen celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the open bug built by Karmann. An advanced new 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 155 kW, available linked to either a six-speed manual or 6-speed DSG gearbox, is at the heart of the new GTI. Despite the rise in power output, the new GTI is assured of greater grip in all conditions thanks to Extended Electronic Differential Lock (XDL). The XDL improves traction and reduces the tendency to understeer. Unique springs and dampers combine with lowered suspension give GTI drivers the on-road experience they expect of the brand. In addition, Volkswagen‟s innovative optional Adaptive Chassis Control system, featuring electronically controlled damper units, is offered for the first time on the GTI. This allows the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for any particular journey. The mechanical changes are joined by subtle cosmetic additions. The basis of the GTI is the chassis structure of the new Golf, onto which is added an aggressive new front bumper. This features a deep honeycomb airdam framed by vertical foglights which sit below a new grille element adorned by a GTI badge. As with the new Golf, the GTI uses horizontal lines to make the new car appear lower and wider than it really is. In reality, the new GTI is 27 mm wider than the car it replaces. At the rear, a diffuser is located between an all-new exhaust system with separated tail-

pipes to further lower the stance of the car. A subtle rear wing sits above a pair of smoked rear light lenses and a single “GTI” badge.

As with the entire Golf range, the new GTI features class-leading levels of safety with ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags, including for the first time a knee airbag, all standard. The Golf was awarded a maximum five-star rating by the EuroNCAP crash testing agency along with a maximum fivestar safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Powering the GTI is an advanced new version of Volkswagen‟s 2.0-litre TSI engine, available with either a sixspeed manual or six-speed DSG gearbox The result is an output of 155 kW delivered between 5,300 and 6,200 rpm, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds

the ABT Polo Nice, small and a true sportsman – The new Polo is an impressive vehicle: Its processing and technology set standards in the small car class – and that is the reason why the worldwide largest tuner of vehicles from the Volkswagen group turned his attention to the Polo. The result is a little sports car in a form which makes a man's heart beat faster. And which women will also love. In conceiving the interior for the new Golf, Volkswagen‟s designers unashamedly set themselves the target of defining new benchmarks in quality in this class. This goal extends to all aspects, from ergonomics, through the feel and look of the materials used to the overall refinement within the cabin. The new interior look is combined with advances made by Volkswagen engineers in reducing wind noise, including a completely new design of door and window seals, a new sounddamping inter-layer within the laminated windscreen and a new engine mounting system. The result is the quietest Golf yet produced. The new 1.6-litre diesel, shares the same technology as the 2.0-litre diesel (103TDI) with 16-valves and common rail fuel injection. while maximum torque of 250Nm is delivered between 1500-2500rpm. Fitted with a standard DPF (diesel particulate filter) to reduce particulate emissions, this new engine is not only one of the most efficient but also one of the cleanest diesels available. Two transmissions are on offer, a fivespeed manual and a seven-speed DSG. The seven-speed DSG transmission uses a pair of dry clutches (as opposed to the wet ones in the sixspeed version) to improve fuel efficiency and performance. The pair of dry, o r g a n i c bonded friction linings do not require cooling, m ak i n g the drivetrain more efficient through the extra gear ratio and the fact that less power is required for the gear selection and clutch servo system. Measuring only 369 mm in length and weighing only 79 kg, including the dual-mass f lywheel, the gearbox is remarkably compact. In adopting seven-speeds, Volkswagen engineers were able to lower first g ear to improve acceleration f rom a stand still.
