Viatorian Provincials "Back in the Trenches"_ Viatorian Fathers Edward Anderson, Kenneth Morris and Patrick Render are three former Provincials who continue to serve God's people and the Viatorian Community. The elected role of Provincial is to serve as "Pastor" for the entire Community.

Fr. Morris was very active in the Viatorian program for the formation of the younger members. He also served as a professor of sacred scripture; theRector of the Viatorian Seminary in Washington D.C., and later became the Master of Novices. He was elected Provincial in 1974 and served until1984, when he

Fr. Render distinguished himself as an educator especially with young people. He taught at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois and later became the Principal and President of St. Viator.

Discerning Vocations __ Seven young adult men gathered in mid Winter for a vocation retreat at the Provincial Center in Arlington Heights, led

by Vocation Director Brother Corey Brost, C.S. V. The men ranged in age from 18 to 22, and included college freshmen to a 1999 graduate with a degree in Theology.

Three of the men came from the following Viatorian ministries: St. Thomas More Catholic Community in Henderson, Nevada; Holy Family Parish in Granite City, IL; and St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, IL. Viatorians who helped present the retreat Continued on page 3

Greetings and good wishes to you from the Viatorians. I hope this issue of our Quarterly Newsletter finds you and your family in good health and enjoying the blessings of a happy and blessed life.

Once again, it is my privilege to present to you our

Newsletter detailing some of the activities of the Viatorians in recent months. You will be able to read about a number of young men who have expressed interest in pursuing a religious vocation as a Viatorian and who gathered at our Provincial Center in Arlington Heights in January. These

VIATOR is published quarterly by the Clerics of St. Viator, the Viatorians, for friends, families, parishioners and alumni of Viatorian apostolates.

The Clerics of St. Viator are religious priests and brothers sent by the Catholic Church to teach the Faith and proclaim Jesus Christ as Gospel. In parishes, schools, and a variety of other ministries Viatorians work with Christian communities to live, deepen and celebrate their faith.

gatherings provide a genuine sense of hope for our future. I ask that you keep them and all young people who are discerning God's call in their lives in your regular prayers.

You will also see the wide-variety of Viatorian ministry and service that is represented by Viatorians mentioned in our regional roundup. I know that you will recognize some of their names and the work they are involved in.

In their name, I thank you for your support and ongoing loyalty to the Clerics of St. Viator.

This season of spring always represents a time of new life and hope in the life cycle of our world. I hope that the days of Lent have led you to celebrate the great joy of Easter and the presence of the Risen Christ in your lives and families. Please know that the Viatorians continue to be grateful for your presence in our lives. May God's blessings and the joy and hope of the Risen Christ be with each of you. My best wishes to you.

Viatorian Provincials "Back in the Trenches" (continued) FR. ANDERSON Provincial in 1969 and served as Provincial from 1969 to 1974, when he became Associate Pastor, and then Pastor, at St. Viator parish in Las Vegas from 1975 to 1980. He was appointed Rector of Guardian Angel Cathedral, Las Vegas from 1983 to 1990, when he retired in Las Vegas.

FR. MORRIS became Vicar General of the entire Viatorian Congregation in Rome, Italy from 1984 to 1988. He then served as Director of Viatorian Affiliates for the Province of Chicago in 1989 to 1991, when he became Associate Pastor of St. Thomas More Parish, Henderson, Nevada where he continues to serve today.

FR. RENDER from 1993 to 1994. He was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, IL in 1994, where he continues to the present. •

Discerning Vocations (continued) included Brothers Rob Robertson, Michael Gosch, Dan Belanger and Doug Hudson, along with Fathers John Eck and George Auger.

The retreat focused on how the vow of poverty influences the daily lives of Viatorians. It was the first of a three-year vocation retreat cycle focusing on the religious vows. A three year cycle appeals to men in discernment, particularly collegeage men, because they can return for two or

three winter vocation retreats with new themes each year.

During the weekend, retreatants discussed how the vow of poverty influences the way Viatorians use material possessions and view their personal talents. On Saturday, they were joined by two St. Viator High School Students and the Schwarz family for an evening of service at a Chicago Soup Kitchen.

Donna Schwarz is the secretary for the Viatorian Development Office,

she and her husband Tim are Viatorian preAssociates. Their children Kyle and Kate also participated. The trip to the Soup Kitchen led to a discussion on the responsibility of religious toward the economically poor and how Viatorians, as "Teachers of Faith," can teach the Gospel through service experiences with students and families.

Those attending were representative of the men currently interested in the Viatorian Community.

The Vocation office is in contact with about 20 college-age men who are seriously considering Viatorian religious life. Other religious orders are also seeing this trend toward younger vocations, according to Sr. Cathy Bertrand, S.S.N.D., Executive Director of the Chicago-based National Religious Vocation Conference.

Next year the retreat will explore the vow of chastity. •

Regional Roundup KANKAKEE/ BOURBONNAIS: Father Charles Bolser, Pastor of Maternity B.V.M. Parish in Bourbonnais recently attended a workshop entitled: "Preaching the languages of the Liturgy" which was held at the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy. The program is designed to help enrich the proclamation and celebration of the Liturgy.

CHICAGO: Two Viatorian authors recently published articles. Brother Corey Brost wrote in VISION, a Religious Discernment Guide, "Brothers offer their presence in a world of need." Father Tom McMahon published an article in BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY titled "Transforming Justice: a Conceptualization."

He also authored a chapter in the new A COMPANION TO BUSINESS ETHICS Entitled "A Brief History of American Business Ethics."

SPRINGFIELD: Father Pat Cahill, Pastor of St. Jude Parish in Rochester, joins Brother Jim. Lewnard in serving on the Diocesan Board of Catholic education for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

The Diocese also has a new Bishop with the ordination of Msgr.

George Lucas in December.

LAS VEGAS: Father George Auger preached a parish mission at Guardian Angel Cathedral during the first week of Advent. The Saint Viator Parish School Drama Ministry continues spreading the Word and plans to close the school year with a play to tell the story of the Passion of Jesus in contemporary terms. •
