From The Provincial's Perspective _ _ __ Dear Friends,

Viator Reverend Robert M. Egan, C.S. V. Provincial

Publisher Philip J. Skeris Director of Development

Managing Editor VIATOR is published quarterly by the Clerics of St. Viator, the Viatorians, for friends, families, parishioners and alumni of Viatorian apostolates. The Clerics of St. Viator are religious priests and brothers sent by the Catholic Church to teach the Faith and proclaim Jesus Christ as Gospel. In parishes, schools, and a variety of other ministries Viatorians work with Christian communities to live, deepen and celebrate their faith. Our legal title is: Clerics of St. Viator.

Collaboration is something that is easy to talk about but often times very difficult to accomplish. This edition of VIATOR provides an excellent example of collaboration in church ministry. During this past Lent, Father John Eck, C.S.V., Pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Springfield, Illinois, spent a week preaching a parish mission at St. Thomas More Parish in Henderson, Nevada. I hope that you like the story and its description of how two Viatorian parishes have collaborated and work closely in ministry for the church. If you have other examples of "cross country" collaboration or any suggestions as to how we might better foster a spirit of collaboration among our Viatorian parishes and schools, please feel free to write and make your suggestions. In this issue you will also read about a 70th birthday celebration held for Brother Leo Ryan, C.S.V., at St. Viator High School in early April. This event raised significant money for the Ryan Scholarship Fund designated for students at St. Viator High School. You may also notice a new feature in our newsletter - Points to Ponder. From time to time, we get requests regarding the possible ways in which individuals can make gifts to the Viatorians. These are often among my most favorite letters and phone calls! Seriously though, we thought it might be helpful to provide some information regarding gift possibilities for the Viatorians, and so we offer this new feature in our regular newsletter. Finally, this issue of VIATOR includes a picture of the new Provincial Council there may even be a few faces that you recognize! The new Provincial Council began its term of service on Sunday, June 8, 1997 during an Evening Prayer Service held in the Chapel at our Viatorian Province Center in Arlington Heights. I hope you enjoy all of the features in this edition of VIATOR. It is a pleasure to continue to communicate with you and to share the Viatorian story in its many phases. Please know that you and your families continue to be remembered in the prayers of all the Viatorians. We are grateful for your support and continued loyalty to our community. Sincerely,

~ ;11. f?~,

Celebrating 117 Years ...

St. Anne Novena Continues _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ The 117th annual novena in honor of St. Anne will be held at the historic original shrine of St. Anne in the United States July 1826. Begun in 1880 and under Viatorian direction since the 1940's, the shrine is located at St. Anne

Catholic Church in St. Anne, IL on Highway #1, about 12 miles Southeast of Kankakee. Over the years, the observance evolved and the celebration on the actual Feast Day of July 26th includes several masses offered for the

hundreds of faithful who arrive from throughout metropolitan Chicago and surrounding states. Confessions are heard, and a communal anointing of the sick is also conducted, the relic of St. Anne is publicly

venerated, and the day concludes with a public procession through the town. The full novena, beginning July 18, will be preached by Fr. Richard Pighini, C.S.V., pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Kankakee, IL. For more information, call 815 / 427-8265. •

Partners in Faith Provide

Points to Ponder.... _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ From time

receive inquiries regarding possible gift arrangements in supporting the Viatorian Mission as Teachers of Faith. Beginning with this issue, we will briefly explore several options regarding Charitable Gift Annuities and other arrangements in an effort to provide answers, to highlight possibilities and to

illustrate the benefits of tax-advantaged giving for you and your loved ones. In gratitude for an education many years ago that has helped me achieve financial and family success, I would like to provide a substantial gift to the Clerics of St. Viator. I do not need additional current income now, but would like to further strengthen my retirement with additional fixed and

guaranteed income. How can I accomplish this? A Deferred Gift Annuity is the perfect match for your objectives. In addition to advancing the work of Viatorians, you will defer annuity income; receive a fixed and guaranteed income in a later year (and therefore at a higher rate) of your choosing, and also receive a substantial income tax deduction for the current tax year. And if

your gift is highly appreciated in value, you will also avoid a good portion of capital gains tax liability. For a personal, no obligation and confidential gift annuity proposal, or for more information or answers, call or write: 847/398-6805 Philip Skeris, CAHP, CFRE Office of Development Clerics of St. Viator 1212 East Euclid Street Arlington Heights, IL 60004 . •
