Mission Celebration of First Vows _ _ __ _ _ __ House Moves ___ John Van Wiel, C.S.V.

Viatorian Brother Professes ...

presented Brother Belanger to the Provincial, Fr. Robert Egan, C.S.V., and certified the completion of his candidate preparation. After the homily, Fr. Egan questioned the candidate regarding his free and full intention to make this commitment, and Brother Belanger B rother Daniel Belanger, C.S.V. professed his First Vows with the Viatorian Community during a special liturgy last month. To enable as many Viatorians as possible to attend this celebration, it was scheduled during the Annual Assembly of members. The Liturgy was celebrated in the Alumni Chapel at St.

Viator High School with more than 100 in attendance. His mother and step-father traveled from their home in Henderson, Nevada to be present with other family, friends and Dan's Viatorian confreres and lay collaborators. The Vow ceremony began following the Liturgy of the Word when Novice Master Fr.

"Spiritual discernment, study, prayer and apostolic works were the focus of activities..." formally professed his First Vows. The Continued on page 4

A fter forty years of serving the Viatorian Mission Program, The Mission House operations have moved from 1115 East Euclid Street in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The short move was just across the street to the Viatorian Province Center at 1212 East Euclid and took place in early September. Although the offices moved, the work and service remains the same. From The Provincial's Perspective _____ Dear Partners in Faith,

Viator Reverend Robert M. Egan, C.S.V. Provincial Publisher Philip J. Skeris Director of Development Managing Editor VIATOR is published quarterly by the Clerics of St. Viator, the Viatorians, for friends, families, parishioners and alumni of Viatorian apostolates. The Clerics of St. Viator are religious priests and brothers sent by the Catholic Church to teach the Faith and proclaim Jesus Christ as Gospel. In parishes, schools, and a variety of other ministries Viatorians work with Christian communities to live, deepen and celebrate their faith. Our legal title is: Clerics of St. Viator.

Greetings from the Viatorians. This is the seventh edition of our Quarterly Newsletter of the Viatorians. Perhaps the extensive pictures from our 1996 Provincial Assembly have already caught your attention. Our assembly takes place every August when we invite all of the Viatorians back to the Provin ce Center here in Arlington Heights for a few days of meetings, reunion and jubilee celebrations - there is a picture of the Jubilarians on page 4. This year we invited some of the lay leaders from our parishes and schools to join us. Our theme was "Collaboration in Ministry" and we spent two days listening and discussing how we might better serve the People of God by sharing our ministry. Many of the Viatorians and lay leaders who attended the Assembly commented that it was a profitable and enjoyable two days and provided the opportunity for us to dialogue together on the future of our shared ministry. I know that many of you have received our Case Statement. Some of you have sent contributions for our work and several of you have asked, "Father, did you forget the envelope?" No, we did not forget the envelope. Twice a year we plan to have an appeal which will begin in the fall of this year. For now, we simply ask that you read and reflect on our Case Statement - it tells our story and suggests ways in which you can participate in our ministry. To those of you who have sent contributions, many thanks from all of us in the Viatorians! For everyone, res t assured the envelope is on the way! As I write this letter, I can hear the noise from football and soccer practice from our neighbor to the north, St. Viator High School. With the start of a new school year, it is a sign that summer has come to an end. I hope that the summer months have been good to you and your family. Please know that you remain in the prayers of all the members of our Viatorian community. Sincerely,

~ ;11.

Keeping in touch _ _ _ __ was conducted in early September this year, with Viatorian Provincial Fr. Robert Egan, C.S.V. participating, along with several navy and other U.S. armed forces colleagues. The final "piping ashore" ceremony signified Father Bertrand's completion of his naval duties. Father Gene Bertrand, C.S.V., Commander, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, has retired after 25 years. Commander Bertrand's service in the navy took him all over the world. Postings ranged from Korea, Okinawa, Japan, Guam and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to Italy, Washington D.C., San Diego, California and most recently Gulfport, Mississippi. As a navy chaplain, Father Bertrand's responsibilities included much of what you might expect in any parish - celebrating Mass, providing programs for youth and young adults, sacramental preparation classes, visiting families and visiting the sick. But as a navy chaplain, sometimes his ministry took place on an aircraft carrier or dock-side. An impressive retirement ceremony

Before joining the navy, Gene spent some time in parish ministry and Catholic secondary education. He served in his native Springfield as associate pastor of St. Joseph Church in 1962. He next went to Las Vegas to serve on the faculty of Bishop Gorman High School for eight years. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Griffin High School (now Sacred Heart Griffin) and returned to Springfield. Although Father Bertrand is retiring from the navy, he is not retiring from active ministry. Gene will now serve as a hospital chaplain at the VA Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Father Bertrand can be reached at 1003 N. Tyler Street, Little Rock, AK, 72205; phone 501 I 663-8632. •

Did You Know? The Las Vegas Region of the Chicago Province includes ministries ranging from elementary, secondary and religious education to parish and cathedral pastoral work, and diocesan chancery administration. Elementary: St. Viator School, Las Vegas Parishes: St. Thomas More, Henderson St. Viator, Las Vegas Guardian Angel Cathedral, Las Vegas Secondary: Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas Chancery Administration: Diocese of Las Vegas Retirement House: Las Vegas

Partnership In Ministry

Lay Collaboration Advances _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ Forty lay participants joined more than seventy Viatorians in August for our Provincial Assembly which focused on the theme of Partnership in Ministry. The meetings

took place in Arlington Heights at the Province Center. Just as Via torians serve throughout the country, individuals traveled from as far as Las Vegas and Henderson,

Nevada; Springfield, Granite City and Rochester in central Illinois; and closer points of Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Manteno, the Chicago area and Arlington

Heights. The days were spent listening, dialoging and brainstorming how ministry may best be shared. •
