The third annual Laymen' s Re· treat began on Friday evening, September "10, and ended with a banquet at rioon on the following Sunday. Much of the c redit for the sUCcess of the retreat is d ue to the efforts of . the Rev. William J. Bergin, C. _. S . V., the retreat maste r , who preached w ith his u sual eloquen ce and f ervor , and instilled into the hearts of the r etreatants a gr~ate r love of God and a higher sense of duty. He began by establishing the exis tance of God, and then pointed out that the other pro; ound t ruths of Catholic is m follow with devestating logic to those who are able to think clearly and coP:,istently. F a ther Cardinal will extend his welcome to the largest group of students ever enrolled · a t St. Viator College. H e will wish them e very possible success in their unde rtakings ,· and will ask God to bless their efforts in the current s cholastic y ear, 50 that their s t ay at the College , will be as p leasant and profitable as p ossible. For the past several years, notably since the Very Reverend Doctor Edward V. Cardinal, C. S. V. , has been at the helm of the activIties of the college, the enrollment has increased immensely. ·This is a fine tribute to the efforts of the man who is responsibJe more than any one else for the increasing success of the college, and a splendid e>epresslon of gratitude to our president fo r his unfaltering perseverance in laboring for the best !Jiterests of the school.

Brother Ginsburg Ordained to Holy · Priesthood By Bishop J. Griffin Brother Nor bert Ginsburg, C. S. V., w as ordained to the H oly Priesthood on S un day, Sep tembe r 12, b y the Most Rev. James Griffin, Bishop of the diocese of S pringfield. Father Ginsburg celeb rated his first Solemn High Mass on S un day, S ept ember 19, at All Saints P a r ish in Chicago. Father Ginsburg, whose mother was Polish and his father Jewish, was born in Chicago on J une 12, 1912. He received his early training in AJI Saints Grammar School, and from there entered Quigley Preparatory Seminary. He was graduated with high honors In ' 30, after completing five years of hard work the re. H e then enter ed st. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, ID., but he was forced to quit after three years because of !ll-health.

J . P. O'Mahon ey, C. S. V., P rovincial of the Cle rics of St. Viator. After spending a year a t the Novitiate, he went t o the Cath olic University of A m eri ca to f urther his studies in th eology. He completed his s tudies the re last year when he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology. On Septembe r 4, 1937, he p ronounced his p erpetual vows in the College Chapel. V., r ecently elected Su perior Gen.er a l of the Clerics of St. Viat or , is n ow en gaged in his canonical tour of t he Vi'atorian H ouses in the United States Province. Father Farley arrived in Chicago on A ugus t 21, after having visited the Canadian Province of Viat orian Fath er s . The College will be his h eadqua rters while he is in America, and 'before :returning t o Brussels, he w ill f amiliarize h imself with t he conditions of the various houses of the or der, and become acqu aint ed wi th all of the Clerics.
Mr . Dorian Wilkinson of Michigan State College has been appointed h ead basketball coach by the College Council, accor ding to an a nn ouncem ent made r ecently by the Very Rev. Dr. E. V. Cardina l, C. S. V., president of the College. Mr. Wilkinson w as g radua t ed in '37 w ith an A. B . degree, majoring in Mathem atics and Physical Education . A long with his coaching duti es, Mr. Wilkinson will also tak e over the Post of Professor of Ma themat ics. Years of E>."P"rience Mr. Wilkinson began playing b ask etball in his f r eshman year in high school and ha s been p laying the game ever since, so he lS thoroughly a cquainted with all the Intricacies of the g a m e. In his first y ear at Michigan Sta te h e played r egUlar center on tne f reShinan teain, and also play ed quite a bi t of baseba ll and track . In his sop homore, junior and senior years h e h eld down the position of r egula r center on the varsity squad, and was r esponsible to a grea t extent, fo r the fine showing made by the Michigan Sta t e ba sketball t eam last year. Regulars Returning Coach Wilkinson will lose three of the outs tanding star s of last year in Captain George Roger s, Tommy Gibbons, and Don Betour ne. However , with the r eturn of such great lettermen as "Bones" Straub, "Red" McElligot, "Streaky Bob" Len ehan, ''Bud" Mon ahan, " Danny" Blazevich, ''B abe' ' Clayes, ''Red'' H art, "Cheese" W alsh, and John Burke, the n ew coach should have plenty of experienced mat eria l t o w ork with. Coach Wilkinson h as anno unced that h e would probably use the Van-AJstlne type of play, a system which features scr een plays with a fas t breaking offense.
Viator All-Stars Return To Assist Coach Lou Zarza With F oothall Team In Lou Zarza and his two a ble assistants, Joe Saia and Tommy Gibbons, St. Viator College boasts the only all-star roachi,ng s taff in the cohn try. Lou Zarza won All-American honors as a m embe r of the '36 a ll-s t a r aggregation, while Saia and Gibbons receiv ed the greatest honors football can bes tow upon her knights of the gridiron this year, when they also basked in the blazing glory of AJI-American fame . They were chosen, along with the other outstanding footbal l stars In the co untry, to play on the t eam which whipped the Green Bay Packe rs, champions of ..he National Professional Football League, in one of the most thrilling battles ever staged on th e gridiron. Joe Sala received
a U-star honors when he polled a total of 433,855 votes, while Tommy Gibbons received a total of 441,647 votes. Both boys w er e also chosen on numerous all-confe r ence teams, and Gibbons w as named captain on the team picked by th e R epublicanNews International N ew s Service. Joe Is working hard, trying to develop a guard who will be able to stop the hard driving backs of the opposition with the skill and finesse that Joe had when he used to s top them. Tommy Gibbons Is looking fo r a couple of good halfbacks who will b e able to carry the ball with a little of the speed and drive that Tommy had when he was out there fighting for dear old AJma Mater.
