THE DEATH AND THE BIRTH

In the icy clutch of the ·winter's ·wind T hat screamed and raged and roared, T he Old Year died at the stro lze of twelve, As the blood from, his death zvound poured. With the woeful tones, I n shrieks and groans, T he Old Year's spirit soared. T he giant trees in n~antles white Sang a dirge near the ice-bound bay, W hile the 111oon loo lced forth frO'Jn the pitch black slzy, And shone 7.L'here the ~·ictim la}'· B ut the wi thered forn~ I n the winter's ston11 Stirred not, with the break of day. New -born with pain from the womb of Tim,e, T he New Year came to the bier, To wrap the dead in Past's gray shroud, And there to shed a tear.
