The vet:y sound of the word strikes a sympathetic cord in the m o5t unrespo nsive h eart: it p1enetrates the mask of the 1i1ost impassive wo rld ii11g ~ it pierces the soul of th e exi le with unrelenting severity a!nd makes his punishment all the more severe; it disturbs the peace of the stoic and the scoffer and reduces · all to a comm.o n level- human and sentim.e1i.tal. The undying love of home is pl ainly seen, when 1 during th e yuletide, men and women, ·young and old, endure the discomfo rts of limited trans portation and journey to distant points, at great expense, t o engao-e for a few hri ef hours in the pleasures of home. \ i\That' is the cause of . this ~;un iversal and undyi1n1g affection for home? This. question can be 'answered ind.i vidually. It is not luxury or wealth, for in the hu mble peasant cottage the love of sons and daughters thrives as firml y as in tl1e most opu lent m1ants ion. N'o ! the possess.i on of worldly goods holds little place in our thoughts in the cont.emplation of home. Far and abov~ this shines the love and estee·m for tho~.e who brought us into the WoTld and who have been our ~u1des and models after which our lives have been; patterned.

In this .picture. which we mentally conj ure before us there app·ears a figure which we at once place in the most attractive pn- · ·sition an d around which we -drape the other component parts; it is woman, w~se beneficent infl uence b fe lt especially in the horne, per clivi ely app<)inted kingdom. Si·nce. woman poss.esses s.uch great possibiliti es for working good and must a ssum.e s uch grave r esponsibilities, it follows, that if s11e, herself, is misguide'cl in h er reason ings or a ctions, propor- . ti.onately great evil will follow. Whether she chooses t o preside over a h om~-w hi ch position is generally conceded as m ost fa- _ vorable to w omen-or ente r in t o the lists of t hos,e toili-ng in the world, sh e should be suit abl y trained for her occu pation. We preach, continuou sly. of th e benefit s of hi gh er education for menand pity those to whom it is denied , hnt we may well be called narrow-m.i,n1d ed if we would attempt to deny th ese privileges fo the op posite sex. I t is gen.etally conceded, by all who have g1ve n th e subj ect 'deep thoug ht, that for a .m an to succeed in the world along intellectual lines, lJ.e mu st partake of the hig her f? rm s o f e ducati on~ \ Ve se e colleges overflowing with young men, who, in anticipation of th e stt~dy of ?-. profession, spend years in thos.e branch~s of . study w hich will give th em a mor e general education, · and also serve -to broade111 th e mind. But since we admit that man must · be well prepared for his advent into the intellectual wo rld, are · we not inconsistei1t when we r egard · these same privileges as ne ed l e~s to w om a1n? A glanc e over the history of the past t went y -five years w ill convin1oe us that wonTan as a wage earner is no l onger rega rded _as a cLtriosity but armost a necessity. In the ranks of the professions, in offic es a nd in schools, they 1iu ~n ber ia the tho usands where a f.ew~ years back, they we re P'ractically unkno:wn . Her responsibilities and opportunities are so many that, to truly perfo·rm her ftuLctions as a teacher, she must be educated that she m ay realize the fon·n er and improve the latter. · Eclucaticm, with its n1anifold a dvantages, cannot he t oo ·abundantly bestowe:cl upon any inclivi'clt.):a1. w .e cannot say that either man or woman can b e t oo hig hly educated. But w ith all its re.,.. comm1endations, it m ay p.r·o·v e worse . than useless if the wron.g kii1cl of learning is imbibed or :if it is taught in a faulty manner.

Thus we would not advise a co<tuse .in mechanics as an e ssential to a statesman a minister of the gospel; and he' w:o uld be an ob ject o f pity were his knowl edge limited to this . branch: Yet in our co-educationa.l instit.u lions of -today the con dition of female st udents is in som e res·pects as ridiculous . These institutions, found ed and establish ed strictly for the training .of m en, with a curriculum admirably adapted to the needs of m.a.le students and the courses es pecially estab lished for ou1r young men , t oday admit as stud ents, v.:om en, whom th ey exp·ect t o conform to t1'Ie rigorous and essentially masculine cou.q·ses of study. Does not this -appear . most inconsistent and borcL:::r on " the ridiculous? To say that woman, whose n;ost marked characteristics are essentially femin ine, and ·who is the most admirable inasmu ~h as she poss1esses womanly traits-to say that she in order to educat e herself, should enter the lists with young men, cm1form h erself to their mo de of study, adapt hersdf to their mann er of thinking an d imbibe the g1olden words of wisdom in a manner most suited t o man, is to say that the fe1ninine charms~ in woman are useless and that all, regardless of sex, should cultivate the · sam e habits of life. Sh e is not fitted for the work as it is offered . in co-educatio nal schools. I do n ot me an t' ~ say that woman is mentally incapable of performing the work-for past experience has proven the contrary-but I wish to impress upon y_ou that to acquir,e an education, which will be heneficial in all the term impli,es, she must choose an institution whose work is · suited to her fem. inine sensibilites _, whose a.i m is to impart abundant and practical knowl ed!?·e , and at th e same time- enhan'ce the adm:irable qualities w hich constitute "woman, the fairest flower on earth.'!

There must be some distinct ai··m in view in .educating vJ'io.man! the same as in rrian. Too often do we hear the term , education , app-lied · to woman in that vague, abstract sense which means m erely the spending- of an allotted period · of time and the .acq uiring of an amount of profound though imoractical learning. vVoman , with her admirable virtues and sensibi'l ities, so susceptible of development, should not be burdened with an abun dance

of ·impractical knowledge but should be trained and educated in thos~ studies best suited to h~ r individual character. At the conlpletion of her ·college career she should be so prepar,e d that if she chooses she may ente.r into the work of the world and instead of being a rival and a ·detrim!enf to rnan, prove herself a valuable help·er, an impor_tant a.c quisition in the world's great work. But .if her rnincl is _crowded with a superfluity of vague and impracti. cal ideas; if she is filled with learning suitabl.e ·only to man, if she is imbued with the thought that all the conv,entional differences between man and w:om.an should be laid aside, can you not see the result?' She will be inclin,ed to develop the traits of men, to throw aside a_s beautiful _though useless adornment_s, those · wo-_manly characteristics of which poets love to sing and w·h ich man most achnires in the opposit,e sex. A tendency to despise her lot - in life will develop iri h er; she will long for the seeming freedon1 of masculine w:a.ys, which, once a.c quired, makes her despicable in the eyes of men; unhappiness a.nd discontent follow rapidly, and thus the former beautiful idea,.ls of womanhood are s hattered to give way to the advent of the manly woman. .

In the midst of ail these dep-lorable results, which we r ecognize· as in·evitab le consequences of co-educatio n, there looms up powerful institution· upon which we may rely-the college for wo-men. Here, surrounded by all the conditions adapted to her na.ture, _w oman may engage herself in the most advanced intellectual work and at the same time preserve and foster her refinement and _culture. She must be granted all the assistance necessa.r y in perfecting herseJ£ in the manner intended by nature. While her inte1lectual world is being en larged her moral develop.m,e nt must . not be hindered but vastly imP'roveq .through -the acquisiti on of the inspiring ideals .of Christian womanhood. Thus will wornan work for her . own bett~Crment, for it was through the elevating influence of Christianity that woman was raised from the depths of pagan degradation, and it is through Christianty that she must expect to retain her present exalted throne. T:o retain her hold upon man~s respect she must receive the right kind of education or els1e assum.e the risk of degenerating. As Dr. Shields truthfully remarks in his new book, "If . our . Catholic women are to retain their sw·~etness and refinement they must be educated by wo111.en, in schools for . women, and along the lines demanded by woman's nature."

We are accustomed to hear on all s.icles the wa.rning that we are degenerating, and that as Rome fell so shall our country crumble. W ·e need not accept these fanatical declarations. in their full ~ense, but w·e may ponder over the possibilities of such an

It is possible · that we rhay not always be the powerful nation w~ are today, but so lon.g as the w'Omen of our country. are thoroughly and practically educated we may hope to impro'Ve instead of deteriorate.- The pages of history abound in the illustrious achievements Qf woman, and since her field of activity is but enlarged thr-ough education, w·e may expect to see her add greater laurels in the future. Through education we may hope to see he·r fully acquire the ability to labor successfully in the world and · improve it by her presence; we may expect to see her pr,eside over homes in the future as in the past, and never suffer the home to deteriorate from the high esteem in which it is now held: through )education we may expect to see her mingle in the world, without contamination , and by her u9eful and virtuous life inspire man to greater and nobler deeds.

W :e read with teardimmed eyes and hearts overflowing with sorrow .a nd compassion of those frail and delicate bodies ton1 to pieces by -the sav- _ a.ge beasts in the a.m phitheatre, and again our heart goes out in sympathy an. .d admiration t o ' those nob1e womlen who banished from their minds a.ll wtor.dly thoughts and shared with the holy anchorites the possession of the desert.

How;e;ver, the sairntly daught~rs of Eve wte re destined to take a motr e active and 'important part in hum.a.n affairs and through their heroic efforts they wielded such a pow·erful and heneficenf influence over mankind that they imparted a r:ene.wed vigor a:nld added splendor to the refinement and civilization of every Chris- · tian age. We read- of the artistic mind of the illustrious St. Cecilia, under _whose nam{~ music is glorified, and w~ · find the heroic and pious . queen Blanche, the purity and · splendor of whose life shines forth a.s a beautifttl example of the queenly mother of a saintly king; and _again w·e s,e e the glisten i,n g te:a;r.s of St. M.o nica redeeming the errors of her w;a yward son and giving to the world the great philosopher and theologian, St. Augustine , but there is one sai;n t, the holiness and purity oJ whose lif.e seems to me to stand _pre-eminently above all others and should command the respect, veneration and love of every true Cath:olic; a saint whose pure spotless life won for her the noblest virtue that can adorn the Ch~istia:n's crown, virginity; a s:aint whose invincible firmness in .her adherence to Chrs.ti.a:nity ancll whose it)..domitable courage in the face of death won for her the cr:own of martyrdom _; a s.a.i nt whose remarkabl·e wisdom and purifying and illuminla ting knowledge procured for her tHe exalted and well-meriteel title of patroness. of philosophy-St. Catherine, the virgi'n ma.rtyr and philo$opher of Alexandria .

N:o doubt you a.re w·ell acquainted with the life and deeds o.f this s.a.i nt, but a brief description .of her short and rem!a rkable ca.reer will .proba.b ly freshen in your minds the m1emory of a sainJt whom all true lovers of virtue and wisdon~ should admire and imitate. Catherine was born of royal parents _about the fourth century, . in Africa. As a child she was rem:arkabl-e for her wisdom and acquirements, reveling in -the philosophical treatises o( Plato a~1cl Aristotle; as a maiden she was famed for h'e r beauty, riches and learning. At the d'ea;th of her father this young prin- " cess fell he'ir to the kingdom and -during the short period of her

THE VIATORIA re1gn she gained the good wiil and love ·of the people by her wise and just laws; but her subjects became very much di pJea,s.. ed at her unwillingness to marry, a serting that her gifts of noble birth, beauty and wisdom should be transmitted to future gen.. erations. To all their entreating petitions anrl supplications this unworldy virgin had but one answer, saying, that the husband whom she would wed must be so noble · that kings would wor· ship him, his beauty must be such that angels should desire to gaze uponJ him, and his benignity so great that he could forgive all offences. This answer, as we might imagine, disheartened the people of Alexandria, for they knew of no such prince, but Catherir\e remained persistent in her determi.nation to wed the ,pnnce of her choice or none at all. The . beautiful story continues to relate how through the vision of a holy hermit, to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared Catherine rec·e ived the joy.. ful information that the spouse whom she desired was none other than the Divine Son of l\Iary . who alorne possessed all and eyen more than the requirements she demanded. \V e can imagine with what joy she received t,his message and with what eagerness she awaited _the appearance of the mysterious prince. A · few nights after, her p eaceful slum hers were disturbed by the vision of a beautiful ang;el who g-uided her to the presenc~ of the Divine Son. Recog-nizing in His sublime countenance the prince of her choice, sh~ knelt before Him in adoration; but her joy was soon to be turned into sorrow for she heard coming from the DiYine lips the words, "She is not fair and beautiful ehough for n1e.''

At these words Catherine awoke, and unable to account for her vvonderful but sad dream. wept bitterly aJnd seeking the holy herntit for advice she inquired by \Vhat means she could become worthy of the Heavenly Bridegroom. Ha.ving explained the meaning of the vision. this holy recluse instructed her in the true faith and to~ether with her mother she was baptized. The following night in a similar vision the Blessed Virg:in appeared to her and. presenting her to the Divine Son, said; "Rehold she hath been baptized and I have been her godmother." Hearing these Joying wvrds Christ smiled upon her and plighted his troth by placinga ring on her fing-er. \i\Then Catherin1e a·w oke the ring was still there and in words ~ teeped in the glowing fervor of her loving heart and undving devotion:, she made a vow. that thenceforward . he would despL e all earthly things and live only in the hope that some day she would join her Heavenly Bridegroom in His kingdom of glory.

St. Catherine now devot·e d herself to a life of se cluded contemplation and . austerity, sacrificing 'h er rich mental gifts and the pleasures of this li£e on the altar of the God w hom she so devoutly adored; and so zealous was she in the cu ltivation of that most sublime and beautiful virtue of virginity, that she truly seem·ed . as a sacred blossom · of infinite delicacy and sensibility wlhich was bloom1,rug in the soft and vivifying light of faith and was finally to .blossom forth into a beautiful fl ower of ravishing colors . w hose sweet perfume was soon to be wafted o n the breez_e of tii11e, comm'tmicating to future · generatiorus its refreshing fragr ance and instiHing in men a spirt · of .g oodness and greater d,e votion for everything pure and holy. · St. · Catherine lived . in an ·' age o{ tyrannical oppression a;n:d open persecution of C11ristians, . in an agje which was deluged in the blood of those i•n1nocent mortals whose .sole ambition it wlas to live in thre zealous practice of their religious conviction"s and to di·e i n their defence; but our fearless young saint; nothing daunted by th:e severity and ferocious cruelty of those bloodthirsty persecutors, , emerged froln her voluntary seclusion and openly a.c knowledged her firm belief in the religion of Christ.

This W1as during the r,e ign of the Emperor M!a ximin, the worthless son of a worthless father, who instilled. with the hereditary hatred of his ancestors for the Christian, and imbued with a-111 unoonquerable and fiendish desire of satiating his gluttinous appetite in the blood of the Christians, decla-red a persecution . against them throughout his empire. · Thos:e surpassing gifts of purity and holiness which excited our· unbounded adm·irartion and love in St. Catherine are now lost in the dazzling glow of her zeal, and in the spirit of selfsa~rifice which she displayed, when . guarded by the unsullied shield of virtue and armed wfth the w~apons, of her own true convictions, she appe.a.red before the tyrant, and engaged 'h im in a discus·slion amid · utterly confounded him·. The . emperor, inc,ensed by his ignominious defeat at the hands of a woman, order.e d that fifty of the most _Jearned m'e n of the kingdom be bro;u ght to dispute with this young · philosopher. In the disputation which followed , St. Catherine, sustained by the power of God, not only . vanquished them in argument but converted them to her own true faith. Consider the student's entrance. into col1~ gc ·and follow his sojourn there. Is his not a rigorous traini~g? He h~s a purpose ~ n coming to college, he h~s an ·e nd for wh1ch he des1res to be prepared and educated. ·He 1s s et to a curriculum of studies which he must pursue with attention and earnestness. If the graduate has ·attended a real college he knows pers onally that it is by dint of continued effort that he ha_s w on his laurels. He knows what work is . . Is not the college man fit for the toils and ennuis of the strenuous life? Is he not equal to the work attendant on the busy editor, doctor, lawyer, and business man? Has he never met toil in his long course at college? Was everything milk and honey to h'im there? Ah! no. · 'T'he true student will tell you what work is. How often has he burned the midnight oil pondering over his volumes. After such a laborious career he ought to be equal to a\ny task that his p·rofession may call for; and t0 grapple with it with a will and pot faint under its weight or be disheartened by difficulties. . Long hours in ·the office will not find him growing prematurely weary or fatigued. The habit of work has been formed at college and has become a second nature.

Besides being thoroughly profici ent in the subject matter, and in the distinct requiremeilts of his profession, the college graduate makes other acquisitions· at college which r·e nder him more c<l!pabl e and suited to secure a succe.ss.ful career in the world of activities. He . has received at college a certain refin.e ment, he has acquired a firmnes s and fineness of character which is not a~ cquired at once, cannot he assumed at will, but grows slowly and imperceptibly.

By th e fricti on of the-educational process at college the native roughness and crudities of youth have been smoothed till our student b ecomes a polished g•entleman. The · body, the animal part of rn1a n, grows by intussusception, and this physical growth in childhood, youth and early manhood is attained with the help of manual labor or athletics or both. The body becomes strong, sinewy and . muscular, capabLe of strenuous activity, a fit abode for a sound mind. But an excess of physical development presents before our eyes the picture of a t yp ical ignorant barbarian , warlike, brutish, sensual, regardl ess alike of right or duties, of ed~tcation~ law or religion; he seeks nothing but the performance of feats of endurance and stre11gth s_uch as carrying on murderous wars, killing, slaughtering and bathing in the blood of his victims, bnrning, plun c~ering and satisfying his Ie.cherous passions amidst his weird and gruesome debaucheries; this is the height of his ambition, · the boast of hi s g loriou s achievements, and the summit o·f his happiness. On - the other hand , an excess of mental development will produce an object of pity, a weak, puny and stunted body; a mit~d ·selfish, s upercilious and precocious.

The results of pernicious education st<lre at us from all sides; criminals of every descrip't ion ar,e yearly turned out by the wholesale, and why is it that in the year 1905, we, the enlightened people of this pros:. perous republic, attained the_ sad pre-eminence · of having a high ~ r perce~tage of suicides than any European country? \Vhy is it that the judges in our courts of justice are daily obliged to listen to the most scandalous, disgusting, and filthy accounts of matrimonial infidelities, grant decrees of divorce whereby these parties may mate a.gain and lead poligamous lives? Why is iti that we have so many mysterious . murders, so many dollar-worshipers ~ho are accumulating enormous fortune s through disreputable · means, so many ·e vil-doers openly defying the laws of the country, so many gientlemen thieves who manage to, elude their deserved abode, the penitentiary? The fault is ours, it is in our lop-si ded · system of education; the cry is to educate the intellect, follow materialistic principles to attain this education as though this w~ere the · sum of education. From different quarters is also heard the cry to teach general principles of mor~lity in schools, and why such a dismal failure? Because there is a lack of knowledge and authority · in teaching the primary prin ciple upon which is based the control of the will. The will must be educated, but not unless through the intellect, for the will has no power to will or desire anything unknown by the intellect; as the. will is free , it is capricious, and if not led and made to- appreciate different goods by the intellect, it must necessarily seek goods of its choice, · led by deception of the emotions. and the 'allurements of the passions. For whatever comes to the intellect comes through the gateway of the' s~enses; all our sense impres-sions are acquired images of external objects, mostly through the eye and the ear, the most spiritual of the s·e nses. All these . impressed species are wrought upon and dissect·ed by-Ahe- powers of the intellect, whence the will is trained to appreciate · and to choose different goods guided by the dir.e-cting voice of conscience.

"Conscien;ce," says Balmes, "signifies the judgment which we ourselves form of our ~Gtions as good or evil. Thus , .when we are about to perform an a-ction, conscience points it out to us as good or · bad , a·n'd consecjueutly lawful or unlawful ; and thus directs our conduct. The action being performed, it tells us whether we have done well or ill, ·it excuses or condemns us , it rewards us with peace of niP~- or punishes us witp remorse." Compayre, "is surely the ' best preparation for moral education.-" How may .this be understood if it · is not · simply putting blazing torches in · the hands of children ? While educators clamor for moral education in schools, th e . law strictly a'11:d explicitly forbids religious ·e ducation to he inculcated in schools, and- yet morality is the offspring of religioh. What is the reason foi- this chaotic predicament and . this miserable state of ignprance into whjch multitudes are plung.., ed.? Cleary, a wealthy e:;md prosperous banker of Fifth aven ue. · The young man had been attending college for several years and had returned home with the sorrowfu l nevts that he had failed to obtain the required graduation average, and being discouraged he informed his father that his college ·:dq.ys ·were over~ ~nd that he would not make an-o ther a ttempt in t he educational lin e. Half of the vacation had already slipped away and each day heard J ohn make the avowal •that h e would have no more of college life. Each afternoon found him with 11is frien ds, spin'l11in g along Broadway or through the go rgeou$ ·parks -in the Cleary t ourin g ca r ~ and each evening h e was sur-roun ded ~ y a host of acquaintances at the bar, at th e ball, or at t11e theatre. He hardly realized that vacation was over, enjoy. men t of every kind had so surrounded him iri the past two month s. Finally, one evening in th e· first week of September his fath er called him irito the library just as h e was about to leave. l\Ir. Cleary h ad partly ignored J ohn's protestations in regard to his return t o college, but now he felt t h at it was h is duty to -step in and us,e his parental authority. · ':\Ve11 John ," he began, "h ave yo u decided w hen to leave?" That night whe n the .city bells rang out ·the midnight hour, a middle-aged g entleman was still reclining in his spacious apartn11ents mourning the loss of an only boy, and at the same moment a young man was leaning over the railing of an observation car, torturing himself with a far·ewell view of his native city and the memo-ries of an affectionate father.

It was 0 1ctober the 1st, 1889, at 5 =45 p. m. , that the long west-botJnd limited slow~cl up at · Hastings, Nebraska, for the acco~r:.n!cda tion of a single passenger \vhos> e long journey ended here. He alighted on the platform, and as he did so · ~ close ob~ server would have noticed not on'ly the perplexity . which seizes one wh ~ n he arrives at a station where he is totally unknown, but also a look of deep-hidden and long-endured mental agony.

He was dressed ,neatly in black and carried a light telescope at his side. He walked briskly over towards a conspicuous building whi<;h bore the inscripton, "The V/estern Home," -registered, and was shown to a 1neat apartment ·w ith the maid's kind greeting, "This is your roonT sir." He entered , spent a few mom ents in the refreshing lavatory, and soon found himself enjoying his evening repast with a .d ozen cowboys who had just returned ft::om a cattledrive and were on their way back to the ranch. He said com:paratively little dring the meal but had the pleasure of spending the evening with the overseer of the gang, who alone remained at the hotel, while the others spent the night at Tamp3. Cafe. ' " Well," concluded the overseer, "if you're lookin' for a ranch job I think you might as well start out with us tomorrow, as we need another man right away."

"I am heartily thankful to you," said John, "and I w'ill do the square thing towards you, and will give you my best serv1ce.

Indeed John had no trouble keeping his word as he slept very little during the night. In tact, ht: was · up and dressed long before any of the others, so that when the eastern sky began to change from purple to crimson he had saddled his l:f1·oncho and was rapidly covering the narrow road-way with his companions~ A long, hot and sultry day closed just as they reached the ranch.

Enough to say that he became a thrifty cowboy and before wrinkles had crowned his brow, John Cleary was a prosper.. ~)'us and wealthy ra;.nchman.

It was Oictober 12th, 1907 when Ja.c k was· making one of his trips to Hastings that a storm overtook him and continued with such violence that he was .compelled to put up for the night· in "The Western Home." He wa~ the only stranger there, so the long dreary hours brought a cloud of lonte someness over hin1 and forced his thoughts to wander back to the scenes of his boyhood days. He could not ·e:n.dure the ·torturing memories , so he picked up a newspaper whi~h lay beside him and began to peruse the· different headlines. He was startled for a tnoment, and then read on: "Terribl.e Financial Crisis ," "M a:ny N·e w York Bankers Involved in Big M'oney Tr·oub!·e ," "W m. Cleary Accused of Heavy Speculation"___, He seized his hat, ordered the clerk to inform his ranchn1en ·\. that he would be absent for two weeks, and w1as soon speeding eastward over· the harvest-laden territories of Nebraska. . The great financial trial took pla.ce . in N·ew York November 1st. An elderly gentlema:111, known as W m . . J. Cleary, was seated in the defendant's chair surroH.nded by several prominent lawyers. His snow-white head drooped upon his breast as the ju.dge ~tood ~ to read the sentence .. The c?urt room was fil~ed w11th Fifth ave:n~Ue bank patrons who hstened mtently to the thnlling words of the speaker. : "Wm. ]. Cleary, president of the Fifth Avenue National Bank, has been accused of speculai:ing with the capital of said bank, and found guilty of same. Wherefore the Supre.me Court judges it fit herewith to impose upon him an imprisonment of fifteen years."

The deep silence which had hitherto filled the court room . wa;; suddenly broken by the footsteps o.f a middle-aged man who walked up the centre a.isle, placed his hand upon the railing in :front of the judge and calmly remarked: "Your honor, I would . like to be informed of the amonut of money said to be out against Mr. Cleary." The· question was rather uncalled. fo·r, but the judge answ.e red abruptly: . "'Sixty-one thousand dollars." uThen," he said, tossing his purse over upon the lawyers' table,. ordi~nary.

He had been unusually. busy in the forenoon in enterta:ining several callers, mostly parents who were conltemplating sep.ding their boys to ·college next seasori. So then just now Fr. Be nt on, his room darkened, w as dozing off into a p eaceful nap. He 'was in . the last ·scenes of a b~~autihll . dream; he wta s thinking h ow pleasant it would he were some rich man to make a handsome donation to ·his college. This thought produc ed a thousand p leasii1g imaginations w hich chased themselves throu g h his h ead. Sudden ly h e was .awakened from his reverie by a rather lo ud kn GKk on the doo r.. "Come i·n," h e answered, but did'nt arise fr om his chair. A ·ma n of m-iddle age st epped in, tall ,. well built, neat but n ot stylish in his dr.ess, and introduced h im:$elf as a certain Mr. Wal·iace. The priest .w as quite arouse d by t his tim e and w·as prepa.r·ing to talk over a prospective student. The visitor went on to say that h·e was a r eti.red m.erchant from Chi:cago, that h e had heard of the r ecent disaster at th e college, and had com e to l·e arn if a princely d.o nation would b e acceptable. Imagine the su:rprise ·of the president. H e was fully awake now, and so excited as ·quite to forget to raise the shades in his room. His mind t ossed with a thousand and on e thin gs. The improvem ents h e would make about the coll ege; h e would ~eq uip a laboratory, in crease ·the library, and institute a new chair in this and that branch.

Mleantime the wealthy gentLeman had drawn a checkbook from 'his pocket. The p~riest's face was aglow w ith pleasure, his eyes were beaming as they were fixed on the not e-book; h e was saying all sorts of things t o the donator, praising and thanking hi m ·-for his charity and generosity. Just then a loud rap w:as h eard at the door , and ·without pattsin g two men stepp ed into th e · room. · 'They cast a hurried glanc e around and imm;edia:tely seeing the m.an walked over and laid l1ands on him and conducted him 'hack that afternoon to the m sa'ne asylum w hence he had escaped ·that morn ing.

The portal of graduation through which we at.e to enter upon the broad vista of the actual world lies open before us, but.. so thick are the mists which hang over the sur-Graduation. rounding landscape, that the different paths which we are to follow lie in obscurity. Oh! that we· could throw aside these vaporous tissues, and b.ehold what the fu- · I ture has in store for us, but we cannot. However, let us not labor under the delusion which, unfortunately, is so common- · that the world is waiting for us with out-stretched arms, _an..x:iousto place us on pede tals and offer us homage; if this is what we· expect w·e are doomed to bitterest di appointment. Graduation is not the "end all"; it is but the beginning, the commencement of struggles, strifes, and contentions, a'nd our graduation, our receiving of degrees, is but a mark of our fitness and ability to takepart in these. I·n our opinion Catholic graduates, taken as a w:hole, are done a grave injustice when the imputation is made that they do not support the Catholic press · "unless lured into Are We doing so on a p~ea that such support is a· contribuRightly tion to charity." We would ask, is the circulation ' Blmned? of Catholic periodicals decreasing? Vv e believe· 'n ot, · but on the contrary it is gradually increasing. · To what is this -increase clue. It is due chiefly / to the efforts of priests, who are certainly . Catholic graduates and who are ever urging their people to subscrib.e for and"read Catholic papers. As to Father Mullany's charge that students at Catholic colleges neglect Catholic literature, W'e a'r e forced to believe that if he carries his investigation far enough ·and visits a sufficient number of schools, he will be obliged to-pass a more favorable opinion. As we write there are before us pro.spectus' of seven or eight Catholic colleges and their several com-s,es in literature are materially the same as the one giv~n at St. Viateur's, and we are certai'l1 that no one can accuse us of neglecting the works of Catholic authors.

On May 14th the Varsity made its debut before the elite resi-dents- of Galesburg where the stalwarts. of Knox College were defeated and trampled , 0111 to the tune of 8 to o. Stack, the local whirlwind, was on the hill for St. Viateut's, and to say that hewas the major, chief tooter and general musician is not an exag-geration. He had tf.J.e Knox boys biting 1-l.ard, sending ten back to the bench on strikes and holding them to th.ree scanty hits.

We met our first defeat of the season on O·gclen Field, Chicago, May 26: The game was a beautiful pitcher's battle, w~ Stack in the lead until the ninth inning, when we received .the worst bunch of luck our team has ever experienced. One of the sad featt1res of the clay wa.s the. field, which suffices well for a trackmeet but reduces the · great national game to a farce when utilized as a ball ground. Evidently the powers that be,· at Armour's, take little care of their miniature field, as the valleys and mountains on the infield testify; but worse still, was the right field. This garden is very small in itself, but to make it worse ·the fielders had to conte·nd with a cinder path, flanked by and boarded in with planks raised several inches aborve 'the ground. · O.f course at the crucial moment the ball was hit to this bar-' b.arous territory and confusion followed. Things looked brigh~ when Mahoney began the gam.e with a dean1 single., took second on B. l\!1cCarthy's sacrifice, and scored on Trinkaus' error. In the third, with two down, O'Connell got a single and scored on · Conway's triple to left field. Here Trinkaus became stingy and imitated Stack in his shutout stunt. Stack had the enemy completely baffled until the 'ninth, when Pickett suddenly lost his sight and deliberately (not to say maliciously) walked Ahern. · Then Smith secured a hit on a grounder which went from one . knoll to another and managed to escape M'a honey. Fey was _retired when B'achant picked a foul off the backstop and Trinkaus . struck out. D'a ley followed with the only clean · hit of the day for Armour, the ball going- to left, Ahern scoring · on: Conway's poor throw. Niestadt poked a grounder to rig-ht field, which Shiel, owing to the obstacles, was unable to handle, and two runs scored w·i nning the game. Umpire - P'icketts' actions and decisions were anything but commendable. He permitted Trinkaus to - use a palpably illegal delivery, despite protestations on Capt.

Capt. Conway, 'o8, is without doubt one of the best men 11} .his position playing college ball. H,e is a · good -fielder, very fas on the bases, and knows when to steal and when to slide. This is his fourth year on the team.

E. Stack; '09, help down the pitching end of the game in faultless styLe.. When n ot twirling, he alternates in the field and is a handy man at either place. He knows the game thoroughly, is a strong sticker and a heady wo.rker. This is his third year year on the team. ~ O ' Connell, '09, covered the· first sack w.ith ever increasing skill. He came to the Varsity with a great base ball reputation built up in the Juniors ,.. and he has lived tlp to it. He ~ the -stella.r batsman, knows the game thoroughly, and is always or.a~ the job. This is his third year on the team.

"Coru'' Mia honey, 'o8 has the reputation of b eing one of the best shortstops in the West. He is fast, 'shifty, and has all kinds of base ball . intuition. "Con" uses his head from the first inning to the last and is always in the game. This is his third year on the nine arld he has delivered the · goods in constantly increasing -p~ckages in that time.

A. McCarthy, 'ro. This is his third year on the nine. "Al" held down s.econcl base for the first two - years of his college .career b~t this year _he was switched to third, where h~ justified -all the c-o nfidence placed in him. He is one of the best infielders eve·r s,een _on _any coliege diamond. , J. Legris, 'o8, C. F. Fourth year on the team. Played in ·most of the garn_es a.:nd always delivered the goods. He said ".Pat w.ill be there,"· a:nd he was. Strong batsman, speedy on the bas-es, a fast fielder and strong arm; No ball was put over his b ·e ad during the entire season.

"Ben" Mlc Carthy, '09, R. F. Third year on the team. Caught ·1n 1907, but played in field this year, where he made good with a vengeance. Whirlwind fielder, speedy on the bases, and a deadly whip, all contribute to make "Sol's" play· luminous.

"Bo" Berry, 'r r. Second year on team. Second baseman; was always on hand .with an aggresg.ive game: d-pportune hitting, clever fielding, and a good arm, constitute "Eo's" baseball -makeup.

L. Bachant; 'r r, wielded the "big mitt" in grand style. This -is his first year on the team, but he caught the three twirlers with

ever increasing judgme1it. He has a good batting eye, an excellent head, alll:d p ossesses the necessary adjunct of. all catchers... the snap throw.

B. "Shie:l, Post.. Grad. Pitcher and fielder. Always · in the game and is· a va.luable m!am for any pos.rtlon. He has. played short, third, pitched and caught during his career and has ably filled every position. He . is a good batsman, am excellent. ~wirier, and posses-s es a splen·did ·cross fire.

Shewbridge from St. P~trick's .church, South 01icago, to the Church of the Presentation, Chi_.cago, give·s to parishioners of the Presentation parish a n'lan of w4om they may well feel proud. I-Iis absence will be keenly felt ln South Chicago where he was loved and admired by a people whom he zealously attended. No one perhaps will feel the loss mo.re than the boys whose interests h e unselfishly served during his stay at St. Patrick's. It has been o.ur pleasure to know him for a number of years and we have found him an exemplary priest, a faithful friend, and a model of priestly charity. Father Shuetz celebrated his first mass in St. Anthony's church, Streator, Ill. R ev. W. ]. Bergin acted as deacon, Rev. 'Louis Biskup ski as sub-deacon, and Rev. William Joyce as master of ceremonies. Rev. Otto Zi egler, 0. F . . M'. was assi tant ·priest and preacher. The clergy and laity were entertained after ·mass at a banquet in St. Anthony's hall.

On June. i3 Rev. William J oyce was ordained to the priestbood in 1agara University, J: • Y. Father Joyce said his first ·mass in St. J oseph's Cathedral, Buffalo, N. Y. Rev. John Bid en, L. L. D., pastor of the Cathedral, was assistant priest and preacher. Father J 6yce was ordained for the Helena dioces·e, where he will labor under Bishop Carroll after a few weeks rest at his nome in Buffalo.
