the city of San Diego, and undertook to convert the Indian '· Then be-gan t h at triumphant march over the de ert .hore fr01n San Diego to the Golden Gate. It wa ~ not a va t army with its b6ght steel glittering under the t r opical ·un frightening the red~ men into subjection. but Serra and hi few confrere in the hum~ ble g~trb of St. Francis, armed with the Cro~ of Peace, ubduing them by lessons of love and erecting temple along the way wherein the God of the Christians might be wor hipped. an Carlos (l\rfonterey) was erected in 1770, San Antonio, an Gab rid (Los Angeles), San Louis Obisbo 1772, l\1i ion Dolores ( an Fra n cisco) which withstood the earthquake of two year ' ago, iu 1772, San Juan Cap istrano 1776; Santa Qara 1777, and San Buena ·ventura in 1782. Padre Junipero Serra died at San Carlo in J ;8-4. after fifteen years of labor among the "Indian . Hi , companions continued the work erecting Santa Barbara, San Louis Rey, and other missions which still stand.

Tn all , twenty-one missions were erected. After the faith was established and the Indians were living in harmony the Franciscans taught them how to till the soil and irrigate the field . Thus began the transformation of th e desert into an earthly paradise.

The Indians, deprived of their teachers, returned to their former state and the work of destruction began. The red men and the whites engaged in war, each in turn tool~ refuge in the J\1issions, which were soon eleva tated , so when the Padres were recalled, years after, they found the churches badly <lamaged. Since then most of them have been abandoned, few of th f':' m have been repaired, and they are sad ruins. San Diego l\1 ission has fa llen a Yictim to the ravage of time and but a solitary wall remain of the birthplace of civilization. ~an Juan Capi~trano \vas destroyed by an earthquake.

the religious have taken me.ans to preserve the temple erected by their preclec~ssors. We naturally ask, " vVhy were not all the Miss ions restored to~ -the Franciscans? Why not give them those that remain 路?~' Inspired by the same zeal that prompted the eariy I'adtes, they wo uld not allow these temples to fall in'to ruin. Ho-w sad 111nst these sons of St. Francis feel today as they look over California and see th e efforts 路 of years crumblin g into decay while the. citi zens of a great state stand idly by and do not interfere.

Yo u Native sons and daughters of the golden west, who pride so much in the glories of your beautiful land and would persuade that thare is no g reater commonwealth than California: on earth (and this is so if half you claim were true) why have you so soon forgotten yo ur past, forgotten those who brought the light of Christianity and civilization to your shores-why have you ceased to think of J unipero Serra instead of commlemorating him as your greatest benefactor-and why have yo u permitted your old landmarks, the Missioi1s of the Padres, to crumble into dust These are your jewels and you have neglected to care for them. San Xavier Mission at Tucson.

If you are ever "seeing the southwest," it would he well for you to stop at Tucson, Arizona. You will find there besides a ve ry hospitable people, an abundance of sunshine and a great many places of interest. 路 Nine miles from the city you can visit the most beautiful, the richest, and the best equipped Mission of the Padres. To reach the place necessitates a ride over the desert, whose chief scenic features are an uncomfortable amount of sunshine and miles of worthless cactus and monotonous creosote hush, so that when you have about decided you are far bey Jn cl the pale of civilization, there looms up befor.e you the white towers and dome of San Xavier del Bac. Buried as it were in the heart of the desert, surroundecl by the ancient and crumblin~- adobes of the Papagos, stands a great Moorish temple altogether surpassing anything you expected to find. It is marveloi.is, and <1s you stand in wonderment before the entrance, one of the Si,stt>rs of St. J oseph, who are in charge of the place, comes forward to welcome you and you eagerly question her regarding its history. You are informed that San Xavier is the oldest Mission in tbe southwest. Tucsonians are wont to make the ~ssertion that it was established as eatly as 1590, and some even place it at 1552, but we find in Archbishop Salpointe's works that it was founded by the Jesuits about r6go. Jesuits by the Spanish government, the Franci cans came to Ari_-z ona in 1767, the same time . they · entered California. The pres··ent church, however ·was begun m 1783 and finished ·m I797, the builders being the missionaries them·selv es, with the assistance of the Indians.

All these ]\,fissions were not erected from the proceeds of fabulously. ·rich mines which the monks ~re said to have owned in Mexico but from the produce of the fields and the sale of live stock, for the Padres taught the Indians how to turn the soil to profit. The Franciscans were forced to leave by. the Sentlarizati9J1 act of · 1834 and San Xavier was abandoned. The Apache upr!sing prevented priests .from S10nora vis.iting the M-i ssion and it is only \vithin the last decade that it has been reclaimed. And now you arc ready to follow the Sister or Peter, the Indian sexton , through the church. On the front of the building you will notice in relief the coat of arms of the Franciscans. It consists of an escutcheon on \vhich is placed a twisted cord of the community, and a -cross on ,:v hich are nailed one arm of our Lord and one arm of St. Francis, representing the union of disciple and Master. 0 1n either ·s ide is the monogram of J esus the Savior, and of 1\1ary. There are several niches from which the statu es have long since fallen.

'Then you pass through the immense doors with their wooden 11aiis and hinges and find yourself on an interior almost a.s clark anrl darnp as the catacombs. The interior is abo ut roo by 30 f.eet, erected in the form of a cross, the transept forming on each side a chapel 20 feet square. Over the transept is the dome and 1n the nave ar,e six arches resting on pillars. Op. either wall of the nave is a faded fresco about nine by five feet, the one on the right representing the Descent of the Holy Ghost on the Apostles, .and the one on the left the Last Supper, enough remaining of the pictures to show that the artist was one of no mean ability.

In tlw chapel on the right are two altar , one adorned with the image ·of Our Lady of Sorrows standing at the foot of a large -cross deeply engraved in the wall , and the other with the image -of the Immaculate Conception.- _0 1n the walls over the altars are two frescoes representing Oiur Lady of the Rosary and the llidclen Life of Christ. Likewise,. in the left chapd are two altars (].edicated to the Passion of Our Lord and to St. Joseph, andtwo frescoes representing Our Lady of the Pillar and the P're.sen- .

There, too, i Our Lady of Gt1adalupe, the patroness of the Mexicans, painted on a banner, and in the dark corner is the old confess.ional where many a red man was shrived. trance to the holy place. They are th e insignia of th e House of - Ca ~ tile. Over the main altar is the statu e of St. Francis Xavi er, the patron of th e church , w earing the garb of the Jesnits . YOU to visit the school adjoining the church and you are .surprised . to find n early a hundred Indian children in the.telass-rooms. They . are delighted to have visitors and are certain to sing for you. If . you are fortunate enoug h to arrive at the noon hour you will enjoy watching them eat their meal of "tortillas" "frijollas" which, judging from the children's healthy appearance, 路 certainly agr.e e with them. The Sisters furni sh them with the noon-day meal and very probably this is about all they receive for the day. The Papagos are p oor; they are deprived of the support of the . Government because they are Catholics. They are the ,nildest of their race and live in peace among themselves. Their benefactors are th~ Sisters whom they love and obey. Tl1ese Indians are faithful to their religion and r espond to every call of the J'v1ission bells. l w.as at San Xavier on th e feast of Corpus Chri ti and was ec1ified to see the old ch urch crowded with Papagos and Mex. icans frop1 the ranches miles away. They came before daylight to decorate the repositories in the village and more than six hundred followed the priest in procession. It was an imposing spectacle, these natives with their simpl e faith following the 'priest or spreading rich Navajo rugs in front of him and kne.e ling before the highly decorated tabernacles to receive the benediction on themselves and the fruit of their lab ors. To r each the outside you mu st pass through a littl e room fill ed wit}1 baskets, pottery and curios made by the Papagos. You should purchase a few of them ;卤S souveni rs of yo ur visit and to help the Sisters, whose only n~c:::~ns of sub sistenc e comes from the sale the路reof.

Over twenty years they hav e b een laborin g among these Indians and ha ve never received the least compensation. They depend on the cha ritv of visitors and on the sale of the little curios but they are labori;1g not for the earthly reward. Their hea路rts ar~ in their work, thev love the Indians and San Xavier, and their greatest trial woulcl b e separation from them. Tho ugh they are bl!ried in the desert and seldom see any of their kind, they are contented. lt is one of the mysteries of religion. As you r eturn to Tucson, ancl the towers of the ancient edifice fade in the distance, you fe el well r epaid for your visit and regret you had not more time to v ie1v the wonders of San Xavier del Bac.

ATH0 1LICS who know of the so-called O:xford e r Tractarian move ment usually think o·f the great John Cardinal Newman, as th.e originator and lead er of this great religious r evival. It is true that Cardinal Newman was the most prominent of all th e r eligious geniuses who agitated England about the yea r 1833, but it is quite a mista ke to think that h e was the origin ato r of th e moveme nt. The man ivho fir st devised tb e sch eme to arou se England from her disgraceful s tat e of reli gious apath y, w ho fir st saw the weakness of the Angli can ch urcl1, and tried t o build a firm foundation upon w hi ch she might stand, upon whic h fo undation most of his followers walked into the one · true fo ld, was Edward Bouverie Pusey. H e was th e man behind the move ment, who organized its forces and imparted energy to. it. · D·r. Pusey was born in 18oo, one year before the emin.e nt Cardinal New man. His father , vvho assumed the name qf Pusey, on b ecoming h eir t o the large estates of that fami ly, was of Hug u enot de cent and a strong Protestant. Young P usey was sent to Eton, the great English school, and after taking every prize went tn Christ Church College, Oxford, where in 1822 h e t ook his B. A. vvith first class honors. He also won the Chancellor's prize for th e best Latin e3say, and w as elected F ellow of Oriel College. H e then went to Germany where h e studied philosophy at Heid elb erg, and on his r eturn t o Oxford took the degrees of M'aster of A rts, Bachelor and Doctor of Divinity, and in 1828 was or ..lained in the Church of E.ngla1id. The sam e year h e was appointed R egius Professor of H ebrew in the U ni ve rsit y of Oxford.

Tl1is friendship was so firm that later .grave differe r~ces could not break it. The condition of the Church of Englan d at this time was, from a religious p0int of view, extremely h ad. The clergy mostly r egard ed the church as a means of livelihood. Th e r ectors w ho had good benefices lived as well as they co ul d, 2.ncl did as littl e wo rk as possible. l\'I ost of th em hunted, cl ancec1 and frequently drank and swore. The curates did th e wo rk and recei vecl an average salary of fifty pounds a year, and

Th e tra ct s soon attracted th e attention of th e di g nitari es of th e Church and State, who look ed up on them w ith · uni ver sal su spicion, and finall y r eso lved to try a nd stop them . '1' he one h e wore ~.s still kept there as a r elic. vVhen he returned t o Oxford h e pref~ced his fir st sermon by saying, "God in His infinite w isdom has precluded me fr om addressing you for three years." Those three years were anxious ones for England. The ·q uestions h eard on all sides we r e, " \iVhat will Pusey do ?" . "Will h e go t o R ome?" " I s the whol e of the unive rsity going to turn Cath olic?" T h e morning papers were eage rly scann ed for any news. of Dr. P usey's doings. During this time, Dr. Newman came out of his temporary obscurity, into w hi ch h e had r etired a.fter the publication of Tract XC, by accepting "the true faith, once for all delive red to the saints." Noth in g but th e conversion of Dr. P usey could have s ha ken E n gland more. One by one, "Faber, O·akelcy, l\1:orris, the t wo \Vilb erfor ces, :Manning and oth ers, th e g r eat supporters of the O·x fo rd 1\tiovement, became Catholics alid Pusey and K:e ble were left alon e. Duririg· these years P usey remained very qni et, but aro u sed him self once again to stand up for orthodoxy in the celebrated Go rham controversy. D~r. Phill potts, Bishop of Exete r, refused t o institute Dr. Gorham to a rich bene.· fice b ec ause h e denied b aptismal regeneration. It was decided by the Pri1i- y Council that t his was n ot a n ecessary articl e of beli ef, · despite the fact that t he twenty-seventh article of the T hirty-nine Articles strictly lays clown t h e doctrine of baptismal regene ration.

Dr. Pusey hrave ly uph eld this doctrine, and when it was decided that no one was bound to believe in it, everyone feared that Dr. Pusey would submit to the Pope. ·M anning b ecame a Catholic at this time , and u sed all his influenc e to persuade Pusey to do likewise. but with no avail. · In 1846 Dr. Rusey inaugurated the confessional in the Church of England. His admirers traveled miles to make t heir confes- · sions him , and h e even used to receive confessions by mail.

I-Iunclreds wrote to him for sp iritual advice, and he was m ost careful about answering all these letters. At the request of his dau g hter Lucy, who died youn g, h e founded the A n g lican O'rder of the Sisters of Charity. Afte r this fir st convent h ad been found. :eel, several ot h ers rapid ly sprang up , all of which were minute · .copies of sii11 ilar Catholi c institutions. In r866, when th e cholera broke out in London Dr. P usey took lodgings in the heart of the plague-stricken district and by his example en couraged all.d h elped these nobLe sisters who were ministetin g angels in that dreadful scen e of squalor -and death. Many a dying wretch was cheered and comforted by th e learn ed but kind ly, and who will gain say . it, holy professor of Heb.rew.

In 1828 ·Dr. P usey married, but his w ife died in 1839, and

after that time he lived a verv , trict, au . tere life. He ob- erved the canonical hour ·, and rigidly kept all fa .. t~ and day of ab -tin· ence. His appearance wa eminently uited to his role. \Vhile st :11 a young man he looked old; his countenance attenuated and wrinkled from the austerity of his life and the bent shoulder~ of a student gave him the· appearance of a . eptuagenarian. He was always grave and :eriou .. , and e\Ten the under graduates at Oxfonl n e\'er connected a joke with him. He was not an orator, but always drew large audiences. A.: a cholar he wa. chiefhr eminent, although caring little fe r literature and art. In the last election the Anti-Clericals were elect ed to offi ce by a numb er of votes t hat does n ot r epresent even one-fifth of the number of vot er s. There was absolu tely no contest, n o resistance, on the part of th e Catholic party. All the resources of a wealthy empire, all the intriques of crafty, shrewd and unscrupulous statesmen we r e marshalled against

hi'rn. but in vain; O'Connell was a consum'm ate leader and he led a people who know how to unite when their religion is at · stake. Winclthorsff in Germany is another Catholic lay-leader to vvbom Catho1icy can look up with pride. If his chief adversary, the Iron Chancellor, has merited world-wide fame 1 how' much . wore honor and praise are due Windthorst, since it was he who first compelled Bismarck to retreat, and who won f01~ his pers~­ cuted brethren in the Fatherland a victory of mom.entous importtance. These men embodied in their lives the highest ideals of virile Catholicity, and they inspired that virility in their fellowrnen. By their courage and their zeal n01 less than by their transcendent genius they have won for the Church freedom of gov- . ernment an d wors hip which is her divine prerogative but of which h er enemies are constantly on the alert to deprive her. · Snch men, I say, are models after which all Catholic laymen should pattern their lives. \iVhat a blessing it would be if France and Italy had among their sons of the present time men of this calibre. But · not on ly must we Catholi cs deplore the lack of sufficient uirity and competent leadership in these foreign lands , we must also acknowledge that we ourselves stand in great need of such organization and leadership. in our own country. Although things here have not reached the ac ute stage attained in · other parts of the world, and there is little likelihood that they ev er w ill , nevertheless there is growing up among u s a spirit of SociaEsn;. which in some places has r eached the state of anarchy.

Th1c: has been brought to our notice most strikingly within the last few clays when a priest of God was murdered at the altar, struck down by the hand of a blood-thirsty and law hating anarc:hist, who in all probability h ad conceived his diabolical idea after reading or listening to the teachings and doctrines of some anarchst organi zation and hatched the plan of murder and was ner ved to its execution within the walls of some socialistic hall, even in the limits (),f our own city. These clubs and organizations, one of whic h has chosen for its pa~ticular patron that unprincipled w r etch , Giordano Bruno, do riot confine themselves merely to holding periodical meetings at which they denounce in speech and demonstration our Church and priests, but they have gone so far as to assail our clergy, and all other authority in the most scandal0us, approbrious, and denunciatory terms in a red press e~tablishecl by them and we of Chicago have felt the sting of this venomous serpent within the past few days when an attempt was made upon the life of our brave chief of police by a member of one of these clubs. That such conditions should prevail in this country is most lamentable; not only is it a crime against the priest, or a religion or a city, but it is a crime against

THE VIATOHJAN society in general and particularly against Catholic ociety, and it behooves Catholics to · be up and doing, to arm themselves with the strength of union and attack and annihilate the enemy of church, state and society. The sword and the bayonet are not necessary to accomplish this; but organizations, clubs and societies under the leadership o( patriotic, energetic, competent, and God-fearing Catho-lic lay men are needed. . It is a belief too prevalent among our Catholic young men \vho are . just out of college, that when they have merely complied with the laws of the church in regard to their spiritual weifare that they have fulfilled their duty. :s'ut this is an absolutely false belief; there devolves up on them the duty of taking an active part in upbuilding and protecting the society of which their church is the moth er. It is their business to see that efficient 1'heans are adopted to eradicate the vice surrounding · u s; it be~ c-cmes incumbent upon them to constitute themselves leaders in driving froi11 our midst the disreputable Sunday night dance halt and low saloon with 'i~.rhich it is usually connected, and where so many of our yo ung men fir st learn to feel the enticing temptations of the devil and take their first step on the road to ruin, and what is wo rse still , where so many of our young women and c~'en girls are taught the fir st lessons in sin and · lose the precious flmver of modesty and purity. ·Of what particular avail wili pulpit ~ermons b e in extirpating such evils? Very little indeed. The occ;"Js1cn mu st b e r emove d and it is the part of your lay Catholics to see that fit laws are enacted and vigorously enforced in order th~t this may be accomplished.

Yes. our Catholic laym en are wont to minimize their duties.

They never seem to think that Catholicity should be made a living force in the world, that she should be the prime mover in all soci:::tl r eforms, that her lay sons should be sold iers of Christ in the true sense . of the word and fight manfully to uplift the moral, SCJ c}al, and political s~andard of their country.

But the victory over indifferentism, socialism and anarchy can only be gained by' our Catholics living in the world and not b.y onr priests who live out of the world . \rVhen we look around us :1nd behold the strength of non-Catholic organizations the truth is brought home to us that we are sadly deficient somewh·e re, for when we con ider the number of lay Catholics in the United States we must acknowledge that our societies and a sociations are most depl orably undermann ed . True, we have some organizations which are growing rapidly and which are doing noble work, <1mong which we find the Knight of Columbus. But there is a crying demand for con olidation of all our organization . We are in need of energetic leader to recruit an army capable of con-

THESE clays of w hol esale cntle1sm certain ecl uca~ .t o rs have been making u se of every effort t o rid the high schools and academ ies of th eir Greek letter socie ~ ties, commonly known as "Frat s." In their efforts to extirpate thi s evil , certain of these have -even gone so b .r as to attack the collegiate national fraternity syst em which for n:s an 路 in separabl e part of American college and university ]i:fe. These have evidently confounded th e college frats with the high school frat erniti,es concerning w hich it is my purpose to yv ri,te, fof., since the papers are daily teeming with this subject, it \vill no doubt be of in1terest to us students, to examine the principles and actions of the high school fraternities and then judge as to whether they should be perm:itted to exist or ignominiously sink ih the slough of public opinion created for the 111iserable and co ntemptibl~ e. Fraternities undoubtedly have their 9 bj ect in college a.c tivity, and although at tim es th eir res ults may be ev il , they are wonderfully prolific in yielding good . However, as much may not be said for th e high school societies.

T''heir sole proficiency li es in th eir capacity for absorbing and r etaining evil. In the high schools, the socieites. are an unmistakahle 路 annoyance and a nuisance of considerable magnitude. Their 8ole aim is to ape the college societies, and as most apes th ey are now sufferin g th e cotl.sequences of their m onk ey-like t actics. I have jn t said that they desire to ape the coll ege soc ieties but must add that they imitate only their faults.

TlK路 high sch ool fraternity is to b e condem ned for various reason s,--because it ba.s not even a plausible exc u s~ for existence, because it fosters and breeds vicio us inclinati ons in its m~e mb e r s, hec3.t1S e it sub verts the purpose of the high school an d t en ds to develop an ignorant class of m en , and last but not l路east, because it de-stro ys cbaracter. It has no good r eason for exist ence. This is a statement which is easily demonstrated. The circ umstances in college, which make fraternities essential, do not exist in the

The best place for him to seek the gratification o f both these wants is under the parenta l roo f. Furthermor·e, the social functions of frat ernity life are b etter adapted to those in the vigor of lu.sty manhood than tn those progress ing from kni ckerb ock ers _ to t :ousers. In th e second plac e, the high school fraternity t ends t owards viciousness. Gambling~ cl'rinking, and profanit y flouri sh and the hous es generally are open all ni g ht. The re cent de cision of the A ppellate Ccurt in Chicago, upholdin g th e ruling of the lower court ',vhi ch. c1 ecicled against the societi es, stai)ed that th e influence of the fraterniti es is almost t otally bad , an.d that because of their prevailing v itiated condition th ey should be abolished. Thirdly,. it subv ert s th e purpose of the hi g h schools. Anyone would b e tbought to be foolis h, or at least in a stat e of mental aberration, i{ h e wou ld as sert that a st ud ent att ends high school to idle away hi s time, making in s ultin g re marks about passersby, and inciclen tall y to t ear up the c'ha.ract er of everyone in the school.

They have the lowest g rades in classes a nd generall y try to make th ings miserab le fo r th e , ons of poor parents w ho can not afford to bel ong to thei1~ fr aterniti es. Having v iewed these frat ernities from a social and mor.al sfandpoint, 'it would no doubt be well to cite an instanc e in reference_ to · their _rel~ious ~e ncl enc_ies .. Two years or so ago t~1 e 0.

K. P1 fratermtyTo£ Hyde Park H1gh Schoo l were prepanng a play tvb ich was a lampoon and burlesque on the Iris h race. One of their number, who was supposed to b e a clever cartoonist, was -directed to arrange a caricature which was to be cop-ied and _p laced on placards. To the int ense indig nation of the Catholics of the district, who procured an injunction to st op it, a picture of an Irish woman standing by a wash-board, beneath a portrait - of the l\1aclonna and chi ld, was printed. This so-ca lled clever · ~cartoon had been the talk of the 'frat ' members for the preceding week and the delight with which they received it only s h ows the vitiated and tarnished state of their moral f.aculties, i.f they possessed any.

In view of all these things the Board of Education of the Cit y of C bi ~ago, in its meeting of January roth, of this year, voted to abolish secret societies in the high schools of Chicago.

Besides abolishing the societies, it was decided that all members Df the fraternitie s be suspended, which is equivalent to;· expulsion, the former t erm b eing u sed only as a matter ·of safety in future legal cases. This vote, however, was not unanimous. One member voted again st it, saying: ((In my opin ion there will be a re-or ganiz ation independent of the high schools." And this is exactly w hat has occurred at Hyde Park and several other schools.

They are taking th e fig·ht to the Supreme Court and it is th eir intenti on to organize ind epen dently if defeated there. In making tl1is fight th ey will have the sympathy of non1e save themselves.

The college fraternities have, through their refusal to accept high 8chool frat men as members, gone on necorcl against these eyesore5. It may b e that the board can successfull y combat and conquer this growing evi l and exercise a new influence, through the formation of democratically organized clubs, and indee-d, this plan has been found feasible. One thing however looms through all these fact s. The fraternity members are in need of shar1) ::md strong discipline. When this is g iven , it will be found that tbe cities· which have administered the antidote wi ll possess the best schools; they will have a better and more democratic class of men; the moral proclivities of its stud ent s will incline toward the right; in general, it will be found, that both the students and schools will each year g row better and better, producing good results, until at some not far distant date the - citizens of each city will have some excellent products to show as the effect of their present exorbitant taxation.

Simpson opened the door to confront a wild-eyed ·tranger, who tried to talk o fast that he could not be under tood. tmp on was about to ring for the hou e attendant , when the tranger fell onto the sofa as if he had fainted. Simp ~ on immediately dashed water into his face, which revived him. Thi fainting pel! seemed to calm him, for he began to talk more intelligently. ''Your life i in great danger,'' ga ·peel this stranger, "for a body of anarchi ts arc going to kill you; you being the heir to the English throne.'' " Simp ~ on was at once convinced that this man mtL t be crazy and he was about to call for a sistance. when he wa · interrupted by the ouncl of hurried footsteps in the hall and then hi door was opened by ~ everal excited men, dressed in the garb of a ylum keepers. At the sight of the e men the tranger made a lunge at Simpson and would have grabbed him by the throat had .not the other men interferred.. "Be quiet. George," aid their leader, ' 'vho was dre sd as a doctor, "and you hall have all the gem 1n the ' oriel.

The wild-eyed individual made another attempt to reach imp on, and it eem.ecl a if he would ucceed, for he was po e eel of uperhuman trength, but hi guard finally handcuffed him. The one ·ho appeared to be the doctor then turned to imp on and aid, "You had better go into the adjoining room while e manage to get thi fellow quiet, for your pre ence eem to agitate him.''

Sim·p son vvi:mted to thank the doctor for his timely assist~ a~ce, but the latt~r bade him hu:rry into the n1 ext room. As s,oon as Simpson $'assed into the next room the one who looked like a doctor quickly s lipped a key from his pocket into the door of the room: into which Simpson had just pass,ed and turned · the lock. The rest of the men, after removing the handcuffs from the one who had appeared to be insane, began to collect all the valuables in the room, among these Simpson's priceless gems.

They went about so methodically that the once glitteri1i.g room 'was ba.fe in a few minutes. The contents of the room w·ere then placed in several large suit ca es which one of the men m:agica'lly brought forth. The one who had assum·ed the role of doctor then spoke to -Simpson through the keyhole. "You had better wait until we have the lunatic outside before you come into this room for he may feel your presence at a great distance and become irrational again. " Simpson consented to wait, but when he finally succeed·ed in getting out he found that he had been very cleverly robbed.

This account never reached the police, for Simpson had a dread of being laughed at.

The Junior and Minim teams have reorganized and exciting games are a daily occurrence on their respective athletic fields .

The Junior team opened their season auspiciously on March 29th by ddc-CJting a t eam from Ka.nkakee, 10 to 8, after eleven innings of exciting play. Harrison and Legris were in the points for the Jtmiors.

Minims. Against Champions. li was with the deepest interest that a large crowd of students gathered to see the' final struggle of the lVIinims as the.y played th eir last scheduled game for championship. The victims were the Hamilton Park boys of Chicago, who went clown in an ·ov.erWhelming defeat by a score of 30 to 13. However, we must g.ive them the credit of being exceedingly speedy and tricky ·players, lJut they wer1e unfortunate in throw1ing baskets ~ The Minim s, on the other hand , besides speed and t eam work, had the great facu1ty of dropping the ball in the basket at almost every -attempt.
