DANTE'S "LUCIFER" AND MILTON'S "SATAN." (Concluded.) w ill now end eavo r t o answer certain objections w l1ich a r e co mmonly urged against l\lrilton's Satan, and which, upon a littl e co nsid eration, are discov ered to be as extravagant as they are unfounded. \?i/ e oft en hear it said that M ilton err ed when h e r epresented Satan as a mighty king, array ed in sp lendo r and power, and th at h e should rath er have r epres ent ed him as a being exclu::,ively repulsive and odious . T o this I answer that th e devil is not in reality merely an odious and r epulsive creature, w hi ch is capabl e of inspiring disgust alone, but b esides h e must be cr edit ed with inspiring something better and more practical than m ~ r e disgust and that is terror, and terror in the fir st degr ee. l\1ilton has excelled in r eac hin g this end and his s uccess is clue to th e m an n er in which h e has depicted Satan, nam ely, as a most haughty, most mali cious, and most dreadful monarch, whose every g lace strikes with awe the s ull en ranks of the infernal host s, whose vo ice, thunderin g fo rth, s hakes the lab y rinths of hell to their very depths. Besides, th e devi l is called a prince by Scripture-the Prince of H ell and of this world. ': N O:w, as the P rin ce of H ell and of this world, and as th e very personification of pride a nd ambition, was it, then , s uch a fault for M ilt on to have represented the devil such as h e clid ,viz., as a monarch arrayed in gaudy spl endor and u surped power?

In the next p lace it is said that Satan, for b eing so represe nt ed, ''wins, do w hat yo u will, a 1 human sympathy;" but do es this hold n ecessarily? Is it a fact that every person who r eads Pa radise Lost must n ecessarily sympathize with the devil? It is difficult to unde rstand how an intelligent r eade r of Paradise L ost can feel the least sympathy for a b eing that is constantly r epresented as th e g reatest enemy of Go d and man. malicious designs, as you will, when one considers that Satan insolently wars against Infinite Goodness and Justice and that h e is the cause of· the fall of man, and .of all his miseries , such a one . cannot but feel the deepest contempt and · hatred for the evil one.

If some sensitive persons are inclined to sympathize with him for some reason or other this is, after all, a matter of m ere sentim ent with them. If a few are liable to be thus affected, it is by no means a sure test that all or the majority of those who read Paradise Lo s~ will be necessarily, and always thus affected.

Finally, it is urged that the "representation of the devil should be purely and entirely evil, without a tinge of good, as that of God should be purely and entirely good, without a tinge of evil." This objection would lead us to the conclusion that there is an absolutely evil being, as there is an absolutely good being-an error far more grave than the presumed error which the objector wishes to point out . . ,From the sound teachings of Scholastic Philosophy, we learn that evil is no being, but simply the absence of clue b eing, and that th.ere is no being amongst created things that is purely and entirely eviL Consequently, we infer from that first statement that the devil cannot be said to be a being that i~ evil, i. e., evil considered as· a being, since evil is no being, but only the absence of due b eing.

Secondly, that the devil cannot be purely and entirely evil , since a being of this kind does not exist. But, since the devil exist s, it follows that he cannot be represented as a b eing that is purely and entirely evil without a tinge of good. As to God it is true He must be represented as purely and enti"rely goocl, __without a tinge of evil, because He is Infinite, Perfection, but the devil , since he is a mere creature and not an infinite being7"c3lnnot be evil in the same way that God is good, i. e., he cannot b e infinitely evil. It is metaphysically tru.e, then, that the devil cannot be called a being that is purely and entirely evil, without a tinge of good.

It cannot be said with truth that Milton does not teach a great moral lesson through his Satan. Surely, no one can think of the great fallen angel, such as he is represented in Paradise Lost without reaching some great moral thought that cannot but deeply impress and move him. In fact, Milton r epresents Satan in a manner best adapted for such a purpose; he does not confine himself to one •

From the following lin es y.ou can easily infer tha\ Milton's Satan, like Dante 's Lucifer also inspires disgust, but let us remark at the same time that this feature is only secondary in the personality of the de:vil and is by no m eans the most important of all. Him the Almighty Pdwer Hurled headlong flaming from the ethereal sky, With hicl~ous ruin and combustion, down To bottomless perdition " " He with his horrid crew Lay vanquished, rolling in the fiery gulf, Confounded, though immortal. round he throws his baleful eyes, That witnessed huge affliction and dismay, J\i[ixed with obdurate pride, and steadfast hate .."

It is especially by the terror that he inspires that Milton's Satan leaves an everlasting impression on the mind of the reader. This t error with which Mjlton's creation fills the minds of his readers is productive of the greatest moral results, for fear, as we know, is th e beginning of wisdom. A man who fears the devil will surely ltate him and will avoid sin, but a 'm an who only ¥10•u rishes sentim ents of disgust for him may, aft~r· all, follow him and serve him , for the disgust one has for a thing 'is not always a sufficient motive to turn him away from it entirely. 1 In support of this we have but t o consider the victims of certain ' vicious passions who, although th ey are filled with the utmost disgust for those very passions, do n ot abstain, however, from weltering in the mire. Salutary fear is '.>..: hat is necessary to check the passions.

Finally, Milton's Satan cannot but inspire the deepest hatred. \ Vh en we consider that he is the implacable foe of the good and merciful God, against whom he is constantly waging an impious w ar, that he is the cause of man's sad fall and of all his innumerable vvoes , and that he is the author of all evil and the enemy of all that i : right, good and holy, we cannot but hate such a despicable and malicious being. These are some of the thoughts that the Miltonic Satan s uggests to the meditative reader, and in this it · certainly teach es a moral lesson of no l'rlean value, for it teaches him to de~j ~-.

Dante, as we have remarked before, has painted Lucifer exclusively un der one color; he has present ed him in a manner well calculat ed to excite disgust for evil. For this reason h e is considered as imparting a grand moral lesson. No one doubts that the devil is r eall y an ug ly and contemptibl e being and that he is b efittingly puni sh ed by Dante; but no one w ill admit that ugliness is th e only elem ent that characterizes the personality of the devil, nor that disgust is th e only sentiment he should inspir e. No r can we r eadily ad mit that the devil is a motionless, helpless, and powe rless b ei ng :for ever tied up at th e bottom of h ell and doomed there to et ernal silence. Woul d t o God that th is were on ly the case, then we poor mortals might have p eace in this world. \ i\T ould that Lucifer wer e beld a s an agonizing captive in the depth s of gloomy Cocytus, occupied in "gnawing and bruising up sinners in his triad of murky months," th en h e wou ld not be causing such a havoc among- mankind. B ut , un happi ly , th e devi l is not thus h eld captive. O n the contrary, he has a fr ee range and a wide fi eld of action.

It has been said that th e cause of the marked contrast which exi~, ts betw een the Lucifer of Dant e an d the Satan of M ilton is foun d in th e diverse end s which th e poets proposed t o th emselves when writing their r espective poems. We are to ld that Dante, in writing ltis Inferno, aim ed not so much at t eaching th e world a gr eat lesson . in the art of writing poetry as in teaching it a grand moral lesson, and that l\!Iilton's aim in w ritin g his Paradise Lost was not to make hi s r ea d er s hate evil ancl its parent, but to bequeath to t h em a g rand ep ic, wherein th ey m ight read th e descripti<;m of a g r eat celestial battl e. No one questions th e fact t hat l\/[i lton in writing hi s Paradise Lost wish ed t o bequeath to th e w orld a g rand epic poem, such as Homer, Virgi l, Tasso, and even Dante himself has done, but that thi s was his only or primary obj ect may w ell b e questioned. W e may, li kewise, qu es ti on t he st at ement that Dante's aim in writing his Inferno was solely to inspire h is r eaders with salutary fear of sin. That Milt on had another and more worthy p urpose in view b esides t eachin g the world a lesson in the art o拢 writi11g poetry is

" From thes e few lines it is evident that l\1 ilton, as a great Christian and as a profound gen ius, had a mor e lofty and a m ore worthy end in view in writing his g rand ep ic than th e mer e winning of popular applause.

Having compared from the standpoint of Scripture, of art and of morality the different representations of Satan, given by M ilton and Dant e, th e co nclusion logically follows that, considered from these standpoints, l\1ilton's Satan is unquestionably a more perfect poetical creation than Dante's Lucifer.

It was Jam es, his little fav orite. Jam es liv ed two squares up the str eet in a brown stone front ; but the gloomy walls of th e Brother's school were to him as the shelterin g confines of Paradis e. He hacl lived in th em for fo ur months now, w hilst his parents were ~t b r oa cl , bu.t h e had forgo tt en their absenc e, in a degre e, for in this short space h e had beco me th e p et and delight of the whole community. He was, however, esp ecially fond of B ro . Pa ul , who not only ser ved in th e capac ity of tutor, but was likewi se a sort of chum and playfellow to t he boy, usin g his b est graces t o k eep bini~ from being lon eso m e. "Is it yo u, J a路m es ?" exclaim ed Bro. Paul, in a most pleasant surpri se . '' I had not ))een expectin g you for an hour yet." wWe ll , I ju st came no-w," said Jam es, hasti ly, '' Cause ma's h er e, an' I'm t o go hom e ri g ht away, yo u see, so I can't st ay for m y r eading. " . " So yo ur mot her has r eturn ed? What g lad n ews for yo u, and to judge by yo u r act ion s you must b e the happ iest hoy in a ll this town." "Oh, ma's go t just lot s o' things for m e ! A r eal clog from 1 w ay far off, an' t omo rrow's Christmas, so I ' m goin g- home, an' sh e says I can come back a gain soon ."

J ames was, in truth , an excited b oy. " How fin e," said Bro. Paul , " mu st be all of those presents, and w hat a grand tim e yo u will have. But I have n't forgo tt en yo u, either , J a mes-wait a mom ent," ;:mel Bro. Pa ul disappeared into hi s study t o em erge with a handsome li ttle book, g listening in its n ew binding of gold and maroon. "vVith best w ish es fo r a m erry, m er ry Christmas," s aid Bro.

with a parting " Goodbye" h e was off on the run to show th e treasure to his moth er, and hasten hom e once more to get a g limpse of all the things she had broug ht him . " Jam es, dear, have you been very, very lon ely while we wer e go n e? I hop e you were a good boy and did not annoy th e kind brothers. I have been so worried, but Father Direct o r wrote such pleasant letters that I know you were havin g a fine tim e, indeed.

"O h , ma, you ought to see Bro. Paul ! He b eats Fath er Direct or ! H e can play all th e best games b etter than th e Father and h e can r ead a whole lot better. He showed me how t o write, too, an ' I ca n write lots o' words just fine , you oughter see !"

Jam es was ve r y enthusiastic over his sc hool life, it was tru e, and h e kept up a running fir e of exclamations until they drew up to t h e house, when h e bolted inside to mak e acquaintance with his n ew dog. My, what a handsome dog ! H e seemed to like Jam es at fir st sig ht, and it was n ot stran ge. So did everyon e w h o ca ugh t a glimpse of his handsome face and noted his refin ed and charming b earing. " What shall I call him, l\tfa? I want the best nam e there is." " You may choose that yourself, J an~es," repli ed his n;~ther.

"Oh , I know. I 'll let Bro. Paul give m e so m e fin e nam e. You bet h e knows all the best ones."

"As you please, clear. " Mother thought that Bro. Paul must be, indeed, little short of a rare magician, since he had so many gifts ; so man y charming qualities which others lacked.

But even though Bro. Paul has usurped so much attention, yet as our best friends are often set aside in the midst of novel scen es an d pleasures, so James forgot everything but th e clog, the presents, and the manifold wonderful things which his parents had brought home for his pleasure, and Christmas day was spent in one round of mirth and youthful revel. At length, tir ed and w eary, h e sat down with the dog in his arms, to r est from th e excitement of the day. It was n early bedtim~ t9 b ~ sure, and it would b ~ a w~l<::<;nt~~ hour fo r him ! .

James mu sed silently for a long tim e. He was much fatigued and did not care to romp with th e clog, but sat and gazed around, Lstlessly. He allow ed his eyes to roam until1 they r ested upon the gilt and maroon of Bro. Paul's gift. Then h e was s uddenly a very active boy. A .remorseful thought had crept into his mind. He had almost forgott en Bro. Paul, his tru e friend.

"D id Bro. Paul get any fine Christmas presents lik e his," he wondered? ((A ny how he l:ad not given Bro. Paul a thing and it \vas Christmas clay, in fact the day of clays was nearly over."

"O h, 1\i[a !" exclaimed James, as h e ru sh ed i路nto his mother's presence. "I didn路' t give Bro. Paul a singl e present. Why didn't you t ell me?"

"Why, child, your father sent him some rare books which we picked up in Rome."

"O h, Ma ! But I didn 't give him a thing myself," insisted Jam es; "and h e won't like me any niore. I ain't tired, Ma. Can't I go ove r and bring him something for myself?" ((D o not be foolish, James. "It is getting late and yo u must go to bed. You may bring Bro. Paul a gift in th e morning." " But, 1\ti a, "- J ames was becomin g obdurate-"tomo rrow ain't Christmas."

"Now run up to bed, child clea r, you are tired." l\!lother was inflexible, it seemed, but sh e did not note the g leam of mischief which flashe,d in the boy' s eyes as he disappeared from t h e room. ' 'H e is so fond of the brothers," said she, "and we can never r epay them for their unselfish care and regard. " She little knew the deep affection in w hi ch her son had come to regard Bro. Paul , and n ever dr eamed that it was as firmly rooted as later eve nts proved.

Jam es hacl gone up to bed, taking the clog along, and, after much trouble, was safely tuck ed in by th e m aid. S he might as well have left him dressed, how eve r, for he rolled about restlessly and was very miserabl e for w hat seemed hours to him. It was quite late, too. He heard the hall clock strike and strike and strike, but there was no sle ep , for th e thought of the shameful manner in which lJ e had for gotte n Bro. Paul's Christmas haunted him. A desperate resolve had entered his h ead. He would go, anyhow ! But could he st eal out of the house without anyone knowing, and would it not

be a cold and lonely trip a such an hour and on such a frosty night?

However, it was easier to go and have peace, a nd, b es ides, Christmas would soon be gon e. He would have to decide quickly. He crept to the window and looked out. It seemed forbidding, but he was brave eno u g h to try. ''It will please Bro. Paul so much," thought he.

"Now, you s hut your mouth !" h e said to th e clog. " We're goin' out. It looks cold and clark out in that street, but we ain 't goin' to he sca red of anything. I got my big coat h ere an' we' ll go up and see Bro. Paul. I" got the pearl rosary here that ma gave me, too, an' I 'm goin' to give it to him, 'cause it's Christmas."

James felt that the dog was very much in favor of the trip, for he wagged his tail and was in a fair way to spoil th e entire proceed~ngs.

Some moments later Jan~es sallied forth, with the clog under bis arm and with breathless, yet careful haste, reached the lower hall. There was no one astir. The house was in silence.

"No one will know," said James, as he proceeded to open the street door, which yielded an exit only after a determined and spitefu l resistance, aided by the failure of the key to respond at once to his tender fingers. He shuddered now at the prospect, yet determined at once to proceed, and, hastening out, picked bis way down th e stone steps to the street and ran as fast as he could. On and on he went, one thought uppermost, that of reaching the school in the shortest time.

It seemed a long journey. vVould it n ever end? A h, but Bro. Pa ul wou ld be waiting at the door to receive him. " I wish it wasn't so cold !" exclaimed the bo y. " 'Tain't much fun bein' out alone in this street, either. 路wonder if ma knew it what s h e'd do? Bet s he'll be scared to death if she finds out."

James hurri ed on, clumsily, the clog not uttering a sound, and at length arrived at th e school. Only an oppressive silence greeted路 him here. No light was to be seen. There was no Bro. Paul at the door, in fact, the doors were firml路y secured. He had not reckoned w ith this obstacle, it seems. Could he open them? He tugged and pulled, but all in vain. Yet he could knock and wake up Bro. Paul, whose room was just above. He knocked and knocked, but it was 0- f~~bl\( nois~ M Pv搂t, T h ~r~ yv~s no answer, lt was ~ettin &' coldH

and colder, too .. How he wished he were a strong man ! He knockeel again, more feebly this time. Yet no one came. His hands were numb, and beating on the hard wood was very painful. He began to feel keenly the effect of the clay's excitement and th e loss of sleep. He was tired of the effort, he was tired of th e whole affair, and , weary from th e strain endured, his spirit gave way t o tears of fear and remorse. He cried and beat his cold feet against th e colder stone. "What shall I do?" he thought. Ah ! he had forgotten the clog, who was also shivering in th e raw wind. The dog was anx ious to be off and jumped about restlessly. James ignored him , howeve r, and sat clown on the door step, too much exhausted even to think what n ext must be done, and too fatigued even to care.

Seeing his young master, apparently motionl ess upon th e step , the clog ran over to him and, reaching up , licked the boy's cheek.

It was the limit of affection. Yet there was no r esponse. H e jumped and fawned about the youth, but in vain, and then h e instinctively raised an alarm by giving vent to a series of very forceful barks; w hines and all other m eans of disturbance at his command.

Bro . Paul had awakened from profound s lumb er with a start.

There seemed to be som e noise from without - yet it was ver;t stran ge-like the moan of a beast. "No one could seek entrance at so lat e an hour. " " It might have b een the wind," thou ght h e. "B ut h old, there it is again, the bark of a dog. Strange, indeed; at such an hour, and at th e very door b eneath ."

T h e good brother hastily dressed; cautiou sly walked down to th e main corridor ai1d flung op en th e 路d oor. The clog was still howling without, and b esid e him , on th e thr es hold, a dimi1iutive figur e leaned a gains t th e side of the enrtanc e, app ar ently asleep .

"How fortunate that I h eard you ," aiel Bro. Paul to the clog, w hich was jumping and pawing about him ; "and what have we h er e? W hy, it m nst be a child ! \ Vhat can h e be doing h ere at this hour? What is it, child dear? Why do yo u sit h ere?"

There was no r esponse. " In truth the young one must b e sick or fro zen," said Bro. Paul. "Som e hom eless vagrant , doubtless," and a pang of mingled sympathy and pity ran through his h eart at th e sight. He lifted th e li mp form into his arms and hurried inside, the clog at his h eels.

"Great Heaven !" h e gasped, as the light struck the youthful face. " Is it? No, it cannot be ! Yes, 路it is Jam es !"

Bro. Paul trembled w ith mingled fear and wonder, refusing at once to credit his own eyes. How strange and unaccountabl e, even like a dream , it seemed. The good brother was dumbfound ed, but it was no time for exp lanation s, and if the poor boy was not b eyond human aiel, a ll possible expedition was necessary for his r eviv al. He ran up to his r oo m as fast as he could, pressing the precious burden close in his arms. P lacing th e child in th e bed which he had just quitted and w rapping th e prostrate form in blankets, h e hurri ed to the infirmary to procure re toratives. It r equired skillfnl work and patience to bring th e boy back to con sciou sn ess, but Bro. Paul worked as if his own life were at stake, praying that th e boy would soon be out of danger , even a a moth er would pray at th e death bed of her child. Aft er a lon g tim e th e boy's eye lids seemed to open, yes, hi s face was illumined with a smil e of joy and peace. Bending over him Bro. Paul h ea rd a faint whisper. It was like a strain of heavenly music, proclaiming the v ictory of his tim ely aiel, a r eward for the effo rt s which had intervene d n on e too soo n to spare his little friend. " I brought you the rosary for Christmas," the voice faintly said . " I never thoug ht till 'twas so late." "The rosa--ry for Christmas," repeated Bro. Paul. The good man had seen the r osa ry in the boy's hands, and had \v.o nder ed. Now h e und erst ood. The whole proceedin g seemed to ru s h up on him and overwhelm his faculties. It was for him it was broug ht . For him and for th eir friendship the boy, in his innocen ce, had brav ed th e dangers of th e bitter cold and lonely night. It was hi s s imple love and yo uthfuJ devotion which had nearly ca used the spark of that sweet life to b e extinguish ed.

Bro. Paul sat down in sil en ce. He could not move, h e could not speak. In all the years w hich h e had sp ent within those somber walls h e had made but few friends amongst th e school boys. There was none who had shown him s u ch a kindness, non e who had been so thoughtful of him. ((W hat a g lorio us, though b elated, Christmas," thoug ht Bro. 路 Paul. Jam es is still a student at the Brothers' school, and were you to happen into Bro. Paul's room of an evening you might see the two ins eparabl e friends engaged in earnest conversation. There is one bes ide them who li stens intently to every wo rd , yet never interrupts. It is "Rescu e." He has a s trange name for a little dog, yet he well deserves it.

A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. N th e outskirts of a beautiful little hamlet, situated a few miles from on e of our large Western cities, there is a convent, dedicated to our Blessed Lady. T he sisters who inhabit this holy r et r eat spare no pains or labor to make the convent and its imm ediate s urroundings as attractive and pleasant as pos~ ibl e . Nature also, as if by design of Providence, has clone h er share in adorn ing the habitation of ... th ese holy virgins, who are eve r r eady to read the goodness and power of th e Cr eat or in the manifold b eauties and splendors of the universe. At a short distance to the left of the convent, there is a s miling littl e lake, whose placid surface at times is literally covered w it h water-lilies . A few rugged old hills, commanding a view of the pond and con vent, make a beautiful background to a scene of such rare beauty. T o th e right are many shady trees, in which birds si n g gayly, a murmuring brook, with its graceful curves and dashing waters, an orchard and vineyard, whose luscious fruit helps to make up the fru gal m eals of the convent. In th e absen ce of the portress, I went t o answer. the call. I found. . that the door had b een blown wide open by the storm, and, to make s ur e that I was not laboring under an illusion, I did not close it imrnediat ely, but stepped outside, notwithstanding the cold a~1d blinding drifts. Irhagine the feelings of s urprise and pity I experienced when I saw a b eautiful little girl of four years, h er an gelic face stain ed with tears, h er lip s blu e and trembling with cold, kneeling 1i. ear th e entrance in th e cold , deep sn ow 'p)ld. o7ins- in a vo ice .that would melt a h eart of ston e. Strange to say, I found that the clothing of this desert ed child was ve ry expensive and well ri1ade, 'and this lee[ me to co nclud e that s h e probably had been kidnappe d from well-todo parents and left at the co nvent door. But I had no time to s urmise h er identity and whence she had come. I tried my very best t o make her warm and comfortable. From her looks I feared she would not recov er. I questioned her, but s he only sobbed and m oaned painfully. She put her arms around my neck and I just caught the words so feebly utt ered , 'Tall papa. She imm ediately dispatched for the father, who arrived on towards evening, almost beside himself with anx iety to reach th e bedside of hi s only child_ We had th e little g irl in b ed, attended by a doctor, who gave us no hope of h er r ecovery, as she had dev eloped a severe case of pneu-· moma. O h! what an awful look on that fath er 's face when h e saw the closed eyes and labored breathing of her who was neares t and dearest to him on earth. I thought h e would lose his r eason; but a. ·slig ht t emporary improveme nt in the condition of his child somew hat quieted him , and he finall y told us his st ory. girl of that country. They had one child, but three years old when its mother took sick and died. A few months after her death he discontinued his work, returned to America and had been in Denver but a very s hort time when his child was stolen from the hotel.

In answer to a sec r et demand for a ransom and relying on the promise that the child would be returned, he sent a thousand dollars to the villains who robbed him of his precious jewel.; but they were not faithful to their promise. He was well nigh crazed with grief when he received our dispatch.

The child grew worse, despite all our efforts for h er r ecovery . . ]:I ow sad it was to see that sweet life being wasted by the ravages of a dread disease. Each day saw the little one still sinking. On Christmas eve the father was almost distracted witnessing the agony of his clear little girl. Just as the community was about tore. pair to the chapel for mi.dnight mass the child raised her hands to·w?-rd her · father. He took her in his arms and quietly walked up ai1d clown the corridor with his precious burden. As he paused befor·e a picture of our heavenly mother the child stretched out her arms and cried, 'Tum, mamma, ta Mabel home. " Overcome with grief the father lay the child in the bed where, as once more her pale lips parted to lisp th~ loving name of mamma, her innocent spirit went forth in the effort. The sorrow aqd anguish of the father knew no control as he gazed at the still form of his innocent one.

On h er pale face there wa~ a faint trace of the light that illumined . her countenance as she looked upon the picture a few moments before. , ·Ou r attempts to co nsol e the heart-broken parent were somewhat s uccessful. This Christmas for him was certainly one of · gloom, but one which did not come without its blessing. The fath·er's request that the body of his little one be buried in the convent cemetery was r eadily granted and here beneath this flower-covered 11101111d li es the mortal r emains of little Mabel, who is now with her mother in heaven. The picture which attracted the attention of his ·child was given to M r. Thompson, as he had expressed a desire ta nave it in remembrance of his little one . . In return, he presented the convent with that beautiful l\d:adonna which you admire so 1·nuch."

"And what b ecame of generous Mr. Thompson?'' I asked.

"Scarcely had sh e who was for him a living image of his dead

路wife," replied the sister, "been called home to her mother, when a bright light dawned upon his soul-a light which issued forth from the dark cloud of gloom that enveloped his soul on that Christmas morning. Illumined by this heavenly inspiration h e quitted the world and entered a religious order as a lay brother. At present h e is the sacristan in a neighboring parish, which is under the management of one of the fathers of his order. He never fail s to visit the grave of his child, where h~ kneels and thanks God for those so r-r ows which were to him blessings in disguise."

What s ublim e principles must und erli e this loving feast ! It brings into th e h eart of humanity a spark of div ine charity whic h enkindl es into a bright g low that t ender sympathy which makes all men akin. Ruthl ess Time, w ith all its changes, may contin u e in its devastating course, gathering into the harves t of death generati on after generation, but th e glorious sun that arose to brighten men's path, in th e long ago, s till illumin es the way, still has power to dispe l the dark cloud s of selfishn ess that hover around th e va le of man's exile. Divine, indeed, must be the light of that luminary w hi ch thu s burns so brightly that it is still a beacon of hope w h en nearly a ll oth er id eals have lost th eir pow er to u p lift mankind. He w ho wishes to r ead the h eart of humanity aright cannot but find in t he outp ouring of love which characterizes th e feast of Christmas a proof that. when soften ed by kindly influ ences and fond memories man is s usceptible of onl y th e fin est movem ents; then a ll that th ere is of truth, of love, of holines'S o n earth o r in h eave n has for him a charm which is irresistibl e. Christmas, w ith its v isions of yo uthful expectati on that quicken th e joyo u s pulsations of th e yo uthful h eart a nd it s fond mem ori es of happy days that ch ee r the aged, shows that in th e depth s of man's heart th er e is a great lov e of humanity, as well as a n undy ing belief and hop e in a common Easter, who sees and lov es all his childr en. What but su ch a belief and s u ch a hope co uld mak e Christmas what it is-the fami ly fea st of m ankind , th e r eunion of th e whole human race. It i::; confined to no age no r people, but, while it last s, levels all those distin ctions of rac e, class or worldly strife rai sed by human prid e or prejudice. In this we have an irrefragable proof of th e divinity of Him, th e a ll-r edeem ing O ne, whose co min g this g r eat feast commemo rates .

EXCHANGE COLUMN. The Viatorian deems it fitting to head her exchange column for D ecember, first, with Christmas and New Year greetings to all and to each of her sister college journals, and, secondly, with a word o拢 apology to such of her friend s as those of whom she makes no special mention. The omission must be attributed to a want of proficiency in the art of saying much in little space, on the part of th e ex-man , and not to any demerits on the part of the gue sts by whom he is s urroundecL "The Dial" continues to n;aintain its high rank among our exchanges. The D ecember nmnber of this journal contains a choice collection of articles, both in prose and verse, but we must met1tion rarticularly th e essay on "The Poet and th e Slave." This article is well written and will undoubt edly be r ead with pleasure by all , hut it should b e r ead and re-read by thos e whose good fortun e it is to be v isited from tim e to time b y in spirations of the M use, for th e author does not fail to insist on th e fact: that a few great poets are capable of exe rci sing a ve ry benign influence over an entire nation. " T'he Fordham l\1onthly" is a journal well calculated to satisfy. th e demands of even the m ost exacting r ead er. In its pages w e al~ ways find articles of int er es t , and. these tr eat ed in a masterly way.

"Russell of K illo\ven' ' form s the s ubj ect of a well-written essay iri its last jss ue. Th e author, evidently, mad e a careful study of his< subj,ect , and we quite agree with him that " it is a misfortun e that the full character of th e lat e L ord Chi ef Justic e Ru ssell has not bee n g iven to th e world." The poems, "St . Cecilia" and "Th e Youngest," are full of thou g ht and disp lay con siderabl e poetical tal ent.

"Th e Holy Cross P urpl e'' opens with an excellent a~ticle enti- 路 tled "Lucr etiu s and Some Mode rn Think~rs." The writer, speakof this old Roman philosop her , has well remark ed that " If beautiful diction b e our quest, we s h all find in Lucr etiu s many pleasing passages ; but if we seek any logical proofs of the doctrines enunciated, our search 路w ill be vain." O ur modern infidel philosphers, and e peciall y th e disciples of Darwin, w h o look up on Lucretius as the

The \ria toriari. great grandfather of their master's theories, should profit by this important truth, for we seldom find in their writings anything commendable, even from a literary standpoint.

The leading article in "St. l\!Ia ry's Sentinel" is that entitled "Material Progress Does Not Constitute National Happiness," and indeed did this number of th e Sentinel contain nothing else we should have to give it a high place among our exchanges. The language used by the writer is elegant , his style forceable , clear and purely oratorical, but, what is best of all, his principles are as unshakeable as Gibraltar itself. The happin ess of a nation does not consist in its wealth, but , as the writer has shown, it does consist " in the proper development of the intellectual, physical and moral powers of man." And this is one of those truths that cannot be too often repeated, nor too loudly proclaimed at the present day. " The Bulletin" contains many well-yvritten and instructive articles, but the essay on "Socrates" and the editorial on "The Irish Parliamentary Party" are especially interesting. No one can read these two articles without noticing a striking resemblance between the conduct of a certain class of ancient Athenians, called the Sophists, and a certain class of modern Angli'~ ans, called . judges.

Socrates fought in defence of truth and was condemned to death by the Sophists; the Irish Parliamentary party are fighting for justice and they are thrown into prison, there to suffer all the privations and hardships prescribed. by a wise ( ?) law, and this, too, by thedid I say judges? No ! Packed juries was the word I should have used.

"The .M ountaineer" is a creditable journal in every respect. We have read with much interest the essay "Too Much Fiction," and trust it will produce the desired effect. The editorial page and exchange column of this journal are also worthy of commendation.

There are bright boys writing the verse, short essays and stories of the St. Josep h's Collegian, and a bright man at the exchange table. Macti virtute estdte.

We welcome to our sanctum St. John's Collegian, which has just made its bow upon th e stage of college journalism. From the first numb er, which is before us, we can rightly anticipate a glorious future for th e Collegian. The prose articles are all on well chosen s ubjects and treated in a mann er which shows that the contributors to this journal ar e well qualified to write for the college press. Were it not for its late arrival we would like to give it more than a passing mention; but, coming as it does, when we are sending in our matter to the press, we will not spoil our appreciation of its excellence by a hurriedly written criticism of its leading articles. We look forward with inter est to th e n ext number and, in th e meantime, give a hearty Godspeed to th e Coll egian.

D urin g th e novena, which was brought to a close b y th e r eception of the B lessed Sacram ent on th e morning of th e feast, seve ra l ve ry instructive and practi cal sermons \vere preached by th e Very R ever end President. It was ve ry gratify ing to see th e lively devotion 'Nhi ch th.e stud ents manifested during the nove na, and ve ry edifying t o see th e large number who received at the community mass on th e m orning of th e feast. In the evening a very enjoyab le musica l programm e was r end ered in th e study hall betor e th e stud ents and fa culty. Thre e quartet s, r eprese nting th e seminary, seni or and junior dc:.partm ents, took part in the entertainment.. The oth er nui11bers on the programme consisted of solos, instrumental and vocal, and piano selections . The appr eciation manifested by th e audienc e bespea ks a musical tast e which has been influenced by w hat is noble and elevating in mu sic; for , although th e r_. rogramm e was varied b y t he introduction of som e pop ular a irs, yet it consisted chi efl y of cl ass ical music. B ut besides th e music of in strum ent and of song \i'i,re ha d a lso th e music of elo qu ence. And i路:: is no exaggeration to say that the mu sical instrum ent was not rtalf so r esponsive to th e mag ic t ouch of th e artist as were the h earts of hi s au li enee to th e eloqu ent eulogy of m usic which was delivered b y th e Rev . D r. Lab erge. The ori g inality displaye d in hi s tr eatment of th e s ubj ect , th e exq uisite t ast e manifested in th e expression of his though t s and, above all , his sublim e conception of the pow er of music to raise mankind a bove the jarrin g discords of this sinful wor ld , could not have spr un g solely from his oratorical qualiti es , but must h ave had their source in his ext ens ive knowledge and g reat love of the art which h e so nobly eul ogized. We would be pleased to adorn th e pages of t h e V iato rian with thi s b eautiful sp eech , but as it was ext empore, we have t o be content with this pass ing mention. FOOTBALL. Lewis Institute, 6; St. Viateur's, 6.

The speedy and well trained Lewis Institute team lined up against our eleven OCtober 25th, 011 the college grounds, and by i h eir exceptionally fast play ing and sp lendid interference, succeedeel in making a tie game of one which at the start looked like St. Viateur's in a walk. To our mind it was a game played as much on its m erits as any of the season. The fast offensive play of the Lewis I I proved as effective as the defensive and line plunging tactics of our t eam. Their physical condition was certainly far superior to ours, as was evident to all. Everything taken into consideration, how ever, we do not by any means concede L ewis the palm of superiority.

The prominent features of the game for St. Viateur's were, as us ual, th e fearfu l line-b ucking and general play of Jones, the consistent gro und gaining ,of Cosgrove and the superb defensive work

of Wall, who frequently broke through the line and threw the man for a loss. For Lewis, the playing of Craig at full and Meade at tackle wa.s always conspicuous, while Thompson, at quarter, proved to be a fast, steady man.

The game was in progress but three minutes when Cosgrove went over for a touchdown for St. Viateur's, wherea.s Lewis found it impossible to score until the last few minutes of play, but then they did it with comparative ease.

The .fifteenth of Novemqer路, 'o2, will always be a red-letter day in our college football histd'r~~ for on that elate the pugilistic eleven of the Chicago Dental Colle_g,e came down to wipe up the gridiron with our team , by means fair or foul, and, although they outweighed us fifteen pounds to. the ib an, failed to realize their expectations.

Such a conceited, boasting, scrappy lot of players have never disgraced our campus within the memory of the writer. They were the worst bunch of sluggers and kickers our fellows have ever yet tackled. One would imagine that J ()hn L. Sullivan and James Corbett had something to do with the coaching department of this dental team, and that Robert Fitzsimmons and J. J. Jeffries supervised their training. Unfortunately, the dentals have mistaken their athletic abilities, for we are sure they would be far more successful in the fistic arena than they are when th ey pose as gentlemanly college football players.

field about 2 :rs, and imm ediately th eir co nc eit was in evidence, from th e fa ct that they laug hed at th e app ea rance of our younger and lighter players , and hinted at th e overwhelming defeat that was in store for our men. You can i1~agine th en their surprise and utter disappointment when a half hour later, the game having begun, St. Viateur's kicked off to them aqd proceeded at once to take the ball away from th eir opponents by h olding them for clowns on their own fifte en y ard line, n ot a ll ow in ~- th em to advance the hall an inch.. But . their great surprise turn ed to breathless amaz em ent when our lightweight athletes b egan to sweep them aside, and, in four minutes ' play s uc ceeded in making a t ouchdow n and kicking goal.

This so infuriated th e Dentals that th eir prot estations to every decision , their slugging and all ~a ro uncl mean playing became the disgusting featur es of a game in which bo th elevens scored but once, St. Viateur's with compara tive ease, by virtue of Jones ', Cosgrove's, McDonald's and V\1all's magnificent effort s; the Dentals , with great difficulty, aft er many minutes of play.

The last g ridiron stru ggle of th e seaso n took place in Chicago . on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, when an eleven from the college lined up against th e speedy and well trained aggregation of football play ers r epresen tin g St. V in ce nt's. The outcome of the contest res ult ed in a decid ed v ictor y for the Chicago boys, whose fas.t , tricky play ing was entir ely too much for St. Viateur's. But we . would like everybody to know, and esp ecially our St. Vincent

friends, that the Viatorian eleven which m et defeat on that occas ion was not our r epresentative college eleven. We do not wish to detr~ct anything from St. Vincent's g loriou s victory; on the contrary, we are the first to g ive th em the honor and praise which their grand playing merits. However, lest a too unfavorable and untrue view of our athletic standing be t aken, we desire to remind all, students, alumni and friend s, that "our college team" did not meet defeat at th e hands of St. Vincent. It is true ,there wer e three or four regulars on that vanq uished eleven, but th ere were also in it at kast seven from the second and third t ea ms, and, therefore, we feel justifi ed in calling it th e second eleven.

The game was called about ro :30 and played on a fi eld covered with mud and snow, ankle deep. St. Viateur's chose to defend the north goal, St. Vincent's getting the oval. By a se ries of mass-ontackle plays, together with end runs, in which fin e interference was never wanting, the Chicago boys succeeding in scoring and kicking goal in about ten minutes of play, and duplicated the feat about eight minutes afterward. St. Viateur's, having held their opponents for downs, were ru shin g th e ball 路 goalward when tim e was called for the first half. In the second half n either side came within striking distance of th e other's goal, th e play being mostly in th e middle of th e field.

Cosgrove, Carey and Cleary we r e easily the stars for St. Viat eu r 's, l'vicGillan , Griffin and K lein sharing th e honor s for St. Vincent's.
