THERE HAS been developing of late a laudable interest in vocal music, both among the seminarians and the students. The regular lessons as well as g rOli.ping together of the singers into one place in the chapel promises splendid results. Singing is ?ne. of the fine arts and an attainment which everyon~ who .has aptitude thereto should stri ve to master.

THE LATE examinations in the elocution classes have given evidence of high abilities in the refining art of oratory.

CONSEQUENT up on the late examinations severimportant changes have been made in the classes.

Among the more note worthy promotions is that of several brilliant members of the C!Bsar class to the Virgil class.

THROUGH the obliging kindness of orir Holy N arne School friends we are enabled to state a few faets relative to the late splendid fete of the young zouaves. The "HERALD" counted 1500people whereas there weTe not over 1200; instead of 100 zouaves in uniforms there were 150; not Miss. F itzpatrick, but Miss. Becldin read the presentation address.

Great interest in behalf of the boys was manifested by the Hev. Clei·gy, and the Rev, Brother s in charge of the Holy Name School. Besides H is Grace the Archbishop, several priests were present among whom were Revels. JYI. J . Fitzsimmons, F. N. P er ry, N . J. Mooney and F. O'Leary. The musical part of the programme, which had been under the able mauagement of Rev. F. N. Peny, ·was one of the most enj oyable features of the evening, and showed that the boys were not less skilled in using their vocal than their military powers. The faultless, and excellent exhibition of military manceuvres by the cadets reflects great honor upon their painstaking instructor Rev. I<'r. JYiahoney, and the young soldiers cannot do too m nch to secure both his affection and his services.·

OBRIEN'S I:MPRISONMENT, an original melodrarna by authors of IT, etc., will be played by the Thespian Association St. Patrick's eve, March 16th.

The boys looked VPry gay in their brilli_ ant uniforms and were manifes tly proud of the fin e showin g which th ey made. T heir trowsers are of scarl et atter the zo uave pattern , wi th dress jackets of blu e, dec . orated with heavy go ld braid, o ver a white vest. Their caps_are of a new design, having been mfl.de from a commonsense pattern somewhat after the Turkish s mok in g cap with its heavy silken t assel, but with an arch of purpl e silk exten<i ing over all from side to side. Th ey looked vPry neat, and bore themselves as genuine sol dier boys. · Th e programme was varied to suit th e circumstances .

After tbe hall had been crowfl ed the g rand entree of the cadets excited the a ud ience to prolonged cheers.

The little fe llows marched in, in time, military sty le, with their short r ifl es, stepping to the measured beat o f the gorgeously d ressed d rum corps, and tormecl in parade on t he stage. After half an hour devoted t o singi ng, about fitLy li ttle misses from the girls' school of H oly Name ma rched in , beaded by half a d ozen you ng ladies of the Sodali ty, carry ing the co lors. Th e boys fo rmed a hollow square to recei ve them, and the move-

The Fair God (Boston, Houghton, Mifflin & Co.) The reading public is not unacquainterl with the author of this beautiful novel-on the contrary we have ~~n been so taken up with Ben Hur that it is with a thrill of surprise at otwe and of a.~xious expectations that we open this new casket which we , naturally suppose must contain wonders of all kinds. And so it does open to our eager gaze, in W allacB's owr.. bright coloring, th ings wondrous strange. The book, though not equal upon the whole to "Ben Hur," abounds with brill i'lnt descriptions of luxuriant Mexico, aud tells of tile amazing relgiou:; practi ces and the no.b le daring of the early Mexicans.

Vol. VI. of the Na1·rative · and Critical H istory of America (Boston, Houghton, Mifflin & Co.) has been received and is as attractive and interesting as the oth er volumes ot this great work. The present vol. treats largely of out struggle for independcne. There is a copiousness of editorial notes and comments appended to the essays, with numerous and curious illustrations, olrl manuscripts, maps, liberty sc•ngs, etc., which much enhance this volume.

The Musical Record (Oliver Ditson & Co.) continues to interest us with every thing that is interesting in the ine of musical gossip and to delight us with the elegant airs which every number is always sure to contain. "A M~:~:iden's Dream," by Max Mueller, in the cunent num .. ber of the Record is a piece of much sweetness.
